2. The Boston Consulting Co., amid an economic downturn, hired its largest class of recruits ever in 2010. Generous pay and a commitment to social issues through its Social Impact Practice Network are two reasons this company jumped from No. 8 last year to No. 2 this year. The SIPN offers employees an opportunity to give back and work with high-profile organizations like the U.N. World Food Program and Save the Children. BCG also pulled its consultants off client projects to provide working support in Haiti following the earthquake.

In the old days, employees worked at just one company for their lifetime.

Today, there are few gold watches for employee longevity. The average tenure with a company is five years, so retaining employees is another reason for recognizing them.

In 1995, a founding board member of Recognition Professionals International launched Employee Appreciation Day to motivate employers industry wide to recognize employees for their hard work. Since establishing the employee day – always on the first Friday of March – the RPI has been organized as a nonprofit that focuses on recognition innovations and education to improve the workplace.

3. Wegmans Food Markets chain, based in Rochester, N.Y., is known for caring about the health and well-being of its employees. This year, the company challenged its employees to eat five cups of fruit and vegetables a day and walk up to 10,000 steps a day for eight weeks – 11,000 workers took on the challenge. The company also offered fully covered health screenings, flu shots and the H1N1 vaccine.

LESSONS FROM THE LEADERS RPI also rewards company leaders for maintaining employee recognition programs. Employees reward them, too, by rating them among the best companies to work for. In one study, employees across industries were asked if they received recognition for their good work.

About 55 percent said yes; and, among the top 10 percent of the best companies, 66 percent said yes.

5. NetApp of Sunnyvale, Calif., a data-storage firm, hired hundreds of employees this year as revenues soared by 33 percent. Hourly executive assistants make $76,450 a year, plus a bonus of $21,917. Employees also enjoy free fruit on Tuesdays, free bagels and cream cheese on Fridays and free espresso every day.

Last year, Google, in appreciation of a 20 percent increase in revenue, appreciated its employees by giving each of them a 10 percent pay hike. Google is rooted in Mountain View. Calif.

1. SAS: This Cary, N.C., software firm offers on-site health care, child care at $410 per month, summer camp for kids, car cleaning, beauty salon and a 66,000-square-feet gym. One manager had this to say regarding employee feedback: “People stay at SAS in large part because they are happy … people don’t leave SAS because they feel regarded – seen, attended to and cared for.”

Camden Property Trust, an apartment management company in Houston, offers its employees furnished apartments for $20 a night in popular vacation spots like Orlando, San Diego, Denver and Austin. During the height of the recession, employees were willing to take lower pay to save company costs.

8. Nugget Market of Woodland, Calif., owns nine supermarkets in Northern California. Employees receive a 10 percent discount on products. And every day, via a giant flat-screen computer monitor, management provides employees in all stores information about the company, products and employee awards. It’s a daily pep rally.

9. REI (Recreational Equipment) went from a ranking of 14 last year to its current ninth place. Employees of this Kent, Wash., based sports retailer, receive a 50 to 75 percent discount on apparel and equipment, free rental of equipment like skis and kayaks and a yearly gift of REI gear. Employees who participate in a challenging outdoor adventure (like cycling 500 miles across the state of Iowa) receive up to $300 worth of gear. Plus, after 15 years of service, employees receive a fourweek paid sabbatical; after that, they can take a four-week sabbatical every five years.

TAI YIWHAT IS SELF-ABUSE?

W

hen we hear the term selfabuse, we typically think of extreme situations, such as ‘cutting’, anorexia, bulimia, drug/alcohol abuse, and hair pulling. Some may think of self-abuse in less extreme terms, such as mental statements that are degrading.

Both the physical and mental selfabuse examples are valid. Are there other examples as well?

As a society, we are taught to abide by certain rules based on cultural norms. Our American society teaches to respect (any) authority, attend school, find employment, and raise a family. None of these actions are wrong in any way and in fact, can be very positive. However, what if a person follows these actions, out of ‘duty’, and neglects his or her own passions, desires, and dreams?

What if a person decides his or her dreams are childish, based on fantasy, or simply not accepted by others? If a person decided to attend school, find employment, and raise a family, while at the same time deny his or her heart desires, is it self-abuse? Yes, it is.

Self-abuse is when one denies the heart on any level. One’s heart contains love, compassion, desires, and dreams. It also contains a knowing system, which is different from a belief system that is held in the subconscious and conscious minds. The

belief system may tell one that he or she ‘has’ to do this or that based on others’ expectations, while the heart chooses self-empowerment.

When one denies self-love and selfcompassion, it is self-abuse. When one denies dreams and joy, it is selfabuse. If you want to know if you are operating on a heart level or a belief level, look at the results. Do the results demonstrate freedom from pain, joy, laughter, and connection? Do the results demonstrate heaviness, blame, frustration, or denial?

The Lewis-Palmer Ice Hockey team finds itself, once again, in the midst of a playoff run. It’s a run unlike last years, however, as the Rangers enter this year a defending champion, and the favorite of the whole tournament. Lewis-Palmer, with an 18-1 record, is the number one seed in the playoffs. They have over ten straight wins, with their only loss coming to last year’s runner up Ralston Valley, who was eliminated in the playoffs two weeks ago. The Rangers breezed through the first round of playoffs with an unprecedented 7-1 win over Battle Mountain. Then, they won in dramatic fashion in a 2-1 Quarter Final overtime thriller, against the four seed Steamboat Springs. For the second consecutive year, LewisPalmer Ice Hockey has come from Monument Colorado, and made it to the State Semi-Finals game. By time you read this article, the verdict on the Rangers State Title chances will be in; and a Championship game will either be in the coming week, or a dream for next year. ALL-STAR ROUND-UP I would like to commend Josh Scott once again, on an unbelievable season for Lewis-palmers Basketball team. The Rangers are gaining momentum on an incredible 20-3 record, and Josh Scott is a big reason why. He continues to lead the team in points (548), Steals (42), and blocks (97). He’s had several star making performances, including a 41-point game against Mesa Ridge last month in 104-39 beating, in which he also managed 11 rebounds. He is the team’s leader, and will continue to lead them into a playoff birth. The season comes with high expectations; let’s hope Scott and the gang can live up to them.

Congratulations as well, to Karin Roh, who helped lead the Palmer Ridge Girls Swim team to a 10th place finish in the State Championship Meet. With 8 first place meets this year, the Bears exceeded expectations, and have high hopes for next season. Roh, a sophomore, led the team in three different freestyle events. We’ll expect much from her the next couple years.

SUMMER SOULSTICE The second annual Summer Soul-stice Event will be on Saturday, June 19 this year! VIRUSES SOMETIMES ATTACK THE HEART DEAR DR. DONOHUE: A friend in his late 40s thought he had the flu and called his doctor for medicine. Later he had trouble breathing and went to the emergency room, where they said he was having a heart attack. Several hours later, he passed away. An autopsy showed that a virus had attacked his heart. I know there are many types of viruses, but what kind did he have?

How does a person get this kind of virus? If it had been found in time, could something have been done to stop it?

-- R.R. ANSWER: Your friend had myocarditis, an inflammation of the heart. Viruses are one cause of it. The virus most often involved is the Coxsackie virus, named after the New York town where it was first identified.

Myocarditis can be so mild that it produces no symptoms. Or it can be so overwhelming that it is fatal. It occurs at any age. Often, a respiratory infection (even a common cold) or a gastrointestinal disorder (stomach flu) might precede it. A young person -- and your friend is considered young -- struggling to breathe puts the doctor on alert to suspect that a failing heart is responsible and that a viral infection of the heart could be the cause.

Coxsackie viruses are transmitted from one person to the next through respiratory droplets or from foods, hands or utensils contaminated with the virus.

We have no medicine that kills this virus. Most of the time, none is needed,

The healthy and resourceful ideas below can spice up your lunchbox, require minimal preparation time and will help you look forward to your noon meal again.

Pasta Noodles Cook up a batch of noodles the night before and store them in the refrigerator, or use leftover pasta noodles, and you have the beginnings of a tasty cold salad for lunch. Fill one-half of a bowl-sized portable container with cold noodles. Add bite-sized cooked meats or fish, or throw in some beans or nuts. Chop a tomato, some mushrooms, peas, black olives, onions, spinach, celery, carrots, asparagus -anything you find appealing and have on hand. Grapes, raisins, strawberries and apples can be added, too. For more flavor, add cheese, an herb blend, some light mayonnaise, olive oil and lemon juice, or your favorite dressing.

Rice Rice is a healthful and filling grain. Choose brown rice to add the health benefits of whole grain to your meal.

Line a tortilla, lettuce or cabbage leaf, or a sheet of nori (seaweed) with cold, cooked rice. Then add your favorite

Everyone loves dipping foods, so make your lunch a festive dipping occasion! Pack foods that are long and thin: sliced peppers, carrots or celery; asparagus, beans or pea pods; pretzels, bread sticks or cheese strips; or apple, orange or pear slices. Peanut butter, light cream cheese, yogurt, soy sauce, salsa, tomato sauce and salad dressings make great dips and can quickly be poured into a small container for lunch on the go. If you have more time, try crafting your own dips. Canned pumpkin can be blended with light cream cheese with a little maple syrup for a sweet dip.

Chickpeas, garlic, lemon juice and tahini (sesame paste) pureed together make a nice hummus base to which you can add spices for more flavor. Minced garlic, chopped basil, Parmesan cheese and olive oil make a hearty pesto; add ground nuts for more texture.

Don’t forget safety! If you’re packing your lunch to take with you, keep your foods at a safe, cold temperature. Put your water bottle in the freezer the night before, and pack the bottle close to the perishable foods in your lunch pack.

That way you can enjoy ice-cold water with your lunch.

My recipe for Protein-Packed Pasta Salad is a great way to use leftover pasta and vegetables. It’s also an interesting way to incorporate alternative sources of protein into your diet in the form of lentils. It’s delicious hot or cold and makes lunch a luscious affair!

New DVD Releases for Week of February 28, 2011 PICKS OF THE WEEK

“Bambi: Two-Disc Diamond Edition” (G) -- Disney’s 1942 tale of one year in the life of an orphaned fawn is not only one of the best animated films from Disney’s Golden Age, it is without a doubt a timeless classic that has enthralled audiences for generations -- and will continue to do so for generations to come.

Like all children, Bambi is a bit gangly, uncoordinated and innocent. But following

the tragic death of his mother, the young fawn must quickly learn to survive in a forest fraught with peril. Thankfully, he is befriended by Thumper the bunny and Flower the skunk. Together, they learn valuable lessons (often with the help of a wise old Owl) as they take their first tentative steps into young adulthood.

“127 Hours” (R) -- Director Danny Boyle (“Slumdog Millionaire,” “Trainspotting”) pulls out all the stops in this based-on-atrue-story account of Aron Ralston (James Franco, in his best performance to date), a young canyoneer trapped in the Utah desert.

In 2003, while climbing a remote canyon in Utah, Ralston tries to cross a gap that is bridged by a boulder. As he crosses, the boulder comes loose and Ralson -- still holding onto the massive stone -- falls about 20 feet to the canyon floor and finds that his

hand is inextricably wedged between the boulder and the canyon wall.

For five days, Ralston tries to free himself from the rock, but to no avail. He has flashbacks and hallucinations. Severely dehydrated, he drinks his own urine. He uses the small blade from a multi-tool to carve out his birth and death dates into the canyon wall. Finally, he summons the courage to do the only thing he can if he wants to survive: use the blunted, tiny knife to cut off his arm, and muster what little strength he has left to hike the tens of miles to safety.

Generally speaking, when saving for retirement, it’s a good idea to contribute as much as possible to your Individual Retirement Account (IRA) and your 401(k) or other employer-sponsored retirement plan. But if you’ve fully funded those plans for the year, and you still have some money left to invest, you may want to consider a variable annuity, which offers these benefits: Tax deferred earnings — Your variable annuity’s earnings have the opportunity to grow tax deferred, which means your investment dollars can accumulate faster than if they were placed in an investment on which you paid taxes every year. When you eventually make withdrawals, your earnings will be taxed at your ordinary income tax rate. (For nonqualified annuities, you won’t have to pay additional taxes on the amount you contributed.) There are no tax advantages to investing in a variable annuity with qualified money.

A variety of investment options — Variable annuities allow individuals to invest in several different professionally managed investments, known as “subaccounts.� You can choose the subaccounts that best fit your risk tolerance, time horizon and long-term objectives. Keep in mind, though, that diversification does not guarantee a profit or protect against loss.

No contribution limits — Each year, you can contribute far more to a variable annuity than you can to your 401(k) and your IRA. In fact, you can contribute virtually unlimited amounts to your annuity.

Payout flexibility — A variable annuity provides you with flexibility in gaining access to your money. You could, for instance, collect a lump sum. But you might find it more advantageous to take your payments over a specified number of years. You could even choose to receive a lifetime income stream.

Guaranteed death benefit — When you die, your beneficiary is usually guaranteed the amount originally invested, minus previous withdrawals. Some variable annuities offer death benefit options, which may increase the death benefit over time.

Guarantees are based on the claims-paying ability of the issuing insurance company.

While variable annuities do offer some key advantages, there are also some considerations to discuss with your financial advisor before investing. For one thing, variable annuities are not suitable for everyone. A variable annuity is unquestionably a long-term investment. In fact, you may be assessed a surrender charge if you pull money out of the contract within the first several years after you purchase it.

However, some variable annuities allow you to withdraw a portion of your investment, such as 10% of your purchase payments, without incurring a surrender charge, while others allow full withdrawals. Another point to keep in mind is that if you tap into your annuity before you reach age 59½, you may be hit with a 10% early withdrawal penalty.

One final note: A variable annuity is just that — variable. The value of your annuity will go up and down, based on what’s happening in the financial markets, and there’s no guarantee that your annuity won’t lose principal. Also, variable annuities vary greatly in their terms, features and fees, so before investing, consider shopping around.

Consult with your financial advisor to determine which variable annuity may be appropriate for your needs. Ultimately, though, you may well find that a variable annuity may be the final piece to your retirement income puzzle.

our home is often your biggest financial asset. What your home is actually worth can be a major issue in a divorce case. The following discussion of home valuation methods is not limited to the family law context.

There are several ways of determining the value of your home. There is the “guesstimate” method, too often used by homeowners. This can result in erroneous conclusions due to faulty real estate data. Homeowners are not professional evaluators. Many of the valuation systems available to the public have incorrect data. Two other valuation methods that are often used are appraisals and comparative market analyses (CMAs). An appraisal is performed by a certified professional appraiser. A CMA is performed by a licensed real estate broker.

An appraiser analyzes recent sales of other houses and makes standard adjustments for differences between the sold houses and your house in order to arrive at the value of your house. A CMA involves an analysis of active, pending, and sold listings, original list price, final sold price, days on the market, and seller concessions involved, such as payment of a portion of the buyer’s closing costs.

The valuation method that is best for you may depend on practical matters such as the ultimate use of the evaluation. If a Judge is going to determine

the value of your home, an appraisal may be preferable to a CMA. However, there is a trend for more acceptance of CMAs by Judges. A lender will demand an appraisal. Appraisals cost money (starting at around $350). Many real estate professionals offer CMAs for no charge.

The most accurate method will depend upon the evaluator. The results provided by a well-experienced professional appraiser and a similarly experienced real estate broker should be very similar.

However, a real estate broker who lives and works in your community may have a better grasp of the market value of your house than an appraiser who does not live or have experience in your community. Similarly, an appraiser who lives and works in your community may be more accurate regarding your home than a real estate broker who lives and works in Fort Collins.

But all isn’t as it seems. The high technology that allows you to do all those things comes at a price: your security. Any photos you take will include Exchangeable Image File Format (EXIF) data, which reveals exactly where and when the photo was taken.

For example, if you’ve taken all the correct security steps on your social media page and think you’re safe, think again. If you take a phone picture of your child’s Little League game or your house and upload it, that location is embedded in the photo for anyone to extract. It’s called geotagging, and it can lead someone right to your door.

There’s a good chance that the GPS feature in your new phone was enabled by default: In other words, it comes this way out of the box.

There are ways to disable the GPS in your phone.

Check your user manual. If you have any doubt whatsoever that you can do this, take the phone back to where you bought it and insist that a tech do it for

you. This isn’t a time to be unsure. Additionally, if you have added apps (applications) to your phone that use GPS, you’ll have to consider those as well.

Having phones give away your location in a photograph isn’t the only way your security could be compromised. If you troll the Internet on your phone and go to the wrong site, a Trojan horse could be downloaded to your phone that allows someone to read your e-mail, grab your passwords and see your browser history.

On the other hand, if you only want a cell phone to make and receive calls, consider one that doesn’t require a contract, allows you to buy pay-as-you-go minutes and doesn’t incur a monthly bill. See what your local wireless phone store has to offer.
