ore than a thousand years ago, the people of Ireland began observing March 17 as a religious holiday in memory of the day St. Patrick died. Roman Catholics in Ireland still celebrate March 17 as a holy day, amid parties, too. And the secular celebration has become a worldwide festivity rivaling the New Orleans Mardi Gras. Because snakes or serpents were symbolic to the pagan religion, St. Patrick has often been depicted driving the snakes out of Ireland – most likely a metaphor for banishing paganism from Ireland. Historians and biologists have said there were no snakes in Ireland at the time.

The St. Patrick’s Day parade in New York City is today reminiscent of its roots. Only the marching revelers are allowed – no floats, autos or other commercial entities are allowed to participate. Not that they could with a quarter of a million people marching down Fifth Avenue in front of more than 2 million spectators. On St. Patrick’s Day following Sept. 11, the parade was dedicated to police, firefighters, workers and all those who had lost their lives to the terrorist attacks. Around midday, all of the marchers and spectators paused for two minutes and they turned to face south toward the twin towers, as a prayer was said for the victims. It was said one could hear a pin drop during the tribute. That 2002 parade was the largest to-date, with about 300,000 marchers and three million spectators.

It’s not set in stone, but green beer probably originated in Boston or New York City because of large populations of people with Irish heritage. One theory for green beer centers on the “drowning the shamrock” custom. After the parades on St. Patrick’s Day, the men would head over to the pubs, drop a shamrock into their whisky and drink it down – all for good luck. But more likely, some bartender bloke decided one St. Patrick’s Day to throw a bit of green food coloring GREEN in the beer, in keeping with the color of the day. River becomes a bright green – the kind of green Colorado landscapers and garden lovers would die for. And dying is what it’s all about. It all started in 1962 when city workers used dyes to trace illegal sewage discharges. They decided the green dye could provide an unparalleled way to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. The Chicago mayor at the time, Richard Daley, wanted to dye the lake. Yes, Lake Michigan. However, many thought his idea was a bit over the top, so they settled for the river. They released 100 pounds of green vegetable dye into the river that year, which kept it green for a week.

The shamrock, as previously noted, was a teaching tool for St. Patrick. But it has also become a symbol of good luck. Of note though, the shamrock is not a four-leaf clover, which was the “good luck charm” of Ireland pre-Christianity.

Since 1962, male members (no women allowed) of the Butler family have had the distinction of throwing green dye into the Chicago River. Today, it’s about 40 pounds of biodegradable vegetable dye that lasts for a day only. The late Stephen Bailey, one of the green river instigators, has said the “road from Chicago to Ireland is marked in green. From the Chicago River to the Illinois River, then to the Mississippi, up the Gulf Stream and across the Atlantic you can see the beautiful green enter the Irish Sea, clearly marking the way from Chicago to Ireland.”

ver have one of those nights. You know the kind, when the morning after everything seems so hazy. You’ve awaken to a glowing beam of sunlight, beside you, a Lithuanian refuge holding your eldest sisters wedding ring offering you a slice morning-bread. As your mind tries to process what seems like utter nonsense, you sit up to realize you’ve somehow stumbled into a nudist colony in the hot springs of the mountainside. You’re wearing jeans, and quite frankly, the mayor of this community doesn’t like you offending his culture with your ridiculous outfits. He asks you to remove your jeans… Of course later, everything works out when you and your friend stumble upon a camera in the trunk of the car you’ve stolen; it carefully documents the night with photographs, reminding you how it all happened. Now time for a statistic! It’s true that 87% of those nights happen on the night of St. Patrick’s Day. And if you’re going to lose control of both your mind

What’s the Difference Between Loan Modification, Short Sale & Foreclosure? And What Will They Do To My Credit?
Loan Modifications, Short Sales and Foreclosures... Everyone is talking about them...and many are having to decide which route will be the best for their situation. Here is a simple explanation of each:

Modifications Most struggling homeowners will first attempt to modify their current loan in order to obtain lower monthly payments for a specified time period. Loan modifications have been pushed by the federal government through programs like the Home Affordable Modification Program (HAMP). Decreasing monthly mortgage payment into a manageable amount is sometime an easy fix. Be aware though that many lenders won't consider modifying your loan unless you're at least 90 days behind on your mortgage, which can cause a significant drop in your credit score (50-100 points). Short Sales If you don’t qualify for a loan modification, and you cannot afford the payment, the option then is to sell your house. If the house is worth less than what is owed you would then talk with your Real Estate Agent about qualifying for a Short Sale.
Short sales typically harm credit scores more than loan modifications but less than foreclosures. Foreclosures When Loan Modifications and Short-Sale attempts fail, borrowers typically have one final option: Foreclosure. Borrowers who undergo foreclosure will see their credit scores plummet after the scores are first tarnished by the nonpayment of the mortgage. In most foreclosure scenarios, credit scores continue to decline until the process ends, which could be as long as one to two years. All three have a negative impact on borrowers' credit scores. The size of that impact, however, may vary. When Can You Buy Again? Foreclosure: 7 Years for a Conventional Loan; 3 Years for an FHA or VA Short Sale: 2 Years for a Conventional Loan if you put 20% Down, 4 Years if you put 10% Down, and 7 Years if you put less than 10% Down; 3 Years for an FHA or VA NOTE: Employment Consequenses for Foreclosures (that are not affected by Short Sales): In jobs that require Security Clearances, your current and future employment can be challenged, reassigned or terminated! Do your research!

• On March 15, 45 B.C, Julius Caesar, the “dictator for life” of the Roman Empire, is murdered by his own senators at a meeting in a hall next to Pompey’s Theatre. The conspiracy against Caesar encompassed as many as 60 noblemen, including Caesar’s own protege, Marcus Brutus. • On March 20, 1345, according to scholars at the University of Paris, the Black Death, also known as the Plague, is created from what they call “a triple conjunction of Saturn, Jupiter and Mars in the 40th degree of Aquarius. It is now known that bubonic plague was carried by fleas. • On March 14, 1879, Albert Einstein is born, the son of a Jewish electrical engineer, in Ulm, Germany. Einstein’s theories of relativity drastically altered man’s view of the universe, and his work helped make possible the atomic bomb. • On March 17, 1905, future president Franklin Delano Roosevelt weds his fifth cousin once removed, Eleanor Roosevelt, in New York. In 1918, Eleanor was devas-
tated to discover that Franklin was having an affair with her secretary, Lucy Mercer. When Eleanor threatened to leave him, his mother intervened and offered to support Eleanor financially if she would stay in the marriage. • On March 18, 1911, Irving Berlin copyrights the biggest pop song of the early 20th century, “Alexander’s Ragtime Band.” In the first two decades of the 20th century, musical popularity was based not on the sale of recorded performances, but on the sale of sheet music. Future Berlin hits would include “White Christmas” and “God Bless America.” • On March 16, 1926, American Robert H. Goddard launches the world’s first liquidfueled rocket at Auburn, Mass. The rocket, fueled by liquid oxygen and gasoline, traveled for 2.5 seconds at a speed of about 60 mph, reaching an altitude of 41 feet and landing 184 feet away. • On March 19, 1957, Elvis Presley puts down a $1,000 deposit on a $102,500 house in Memphis, Tenn. The Southern mansion on a 13.8-acre wooded estate was later named Graceland. Today, Graceland is the second-most-visited house in America, after the White House. (c) 2011 King Features Synd., Inc.

Some of the scams are very good, which is why so many people fall for them. But with a little investigation and a lot of suspicion, you can avoid these scams and hold on to your money. will hinge on that information. A liver biopsy might be necessary. Some doctors feel all who show evidence of current infection ought to undergo treatment.
HEPATITIS C CAN LEAD TO LIVER CIRRHOSIS DEAR DR. DONOHUE: When he was 20, my son came down with hepatitis C. He’s never said how he got it, but he was running around with a very wild bunch then. He still has the virus at age 27. Should he be treated? He never was. I wonder what’s in store for him, and if he can marry and have a family. Can he? -- C.S. ANSWER: Worldwide, 175 million people are infected with the hepatitis C virus. In the U.S., 4 million carry it. Between 70 percent and 80 percent of infected people will harbor the virus for life. Of that number, around 20 percent develop liver cirrhosis in 20 years, and a smaller number are stricken with liver cancer. Hepatitis C is the most common reason for a liver transplant. People catch the virus in a number of ways. Sharing needles to inject drugs is one way. Health-care workers can get it from an accidental stick with a needle used on an infected person. Before 1992, blood transfusion was a major source of infection. Tattooing or body piercing by unlicensed practitioners or those who do not adhere to sterile techniques is another route of transmission. Sex with multiple partners is a possible way of contracting the illness. Sex with a single partner who has the virus is not a common route of passage. Your son can marry and possibly but not likely infect his wife, and will not infect his children. This young man has to establish himself with a doctor. Lab tests will show if his liver is suffering any damage, and blood tests give a reliable estimate of how great a number of viruses is circulating in his blood. Treatment

*** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: How does someone with AIDS die? How long does one live after being diagnosed with AIDS? Can a person with AIDS cook for his or her family without fear of giving the virus to loved ones? -D.R. ANSWER: AIDS kills in a number of ways. It so weakens the immune system that an infection brings death. Or the weakened immune system allows the growth of a cancer that proves fatal. AIDS also can interfere with the production of proteins and other body materials needed for life, and the person wastes away.

The incredible progress made in the treatment of AIDS allows most infected people to live 30 to 40 years after the diagnosis is made, very close to a normal life span. This is possible in countries where people have ready access to the many AIDS medicines. People with AIDS can cook for their family without any fear of transmitting the virus.

THE KITCHEN DIVA by Angela Shelf Medearis
SAFE IN THE STORM
F
ood safety during power outages is extremely important. With more possible storms approaching, are you ready to handle a power outage? To help you keep your food supply safe during a power outage, the following procedures and guidelines are recommended: Chest freezer Without power, a full upright or chest freezer will keep everything frozen for about two days. A half-full freezer will keep food frozen one day. If you expect the power will be coming back on fairly soon, you can keep food frozen longer by not opening the door. Keep a thermometer in all your freezers and refrigerators to check the temperature once the power is back on. Refrigerator-freezer combination Without power, the refrigerator section will keep food cool 4-6 hours depending on the kitchen temperature and how often you open the refrigerator door. A full, well-functioning freezer unit should keep food frozen for two days. A half-full freezer unit should keep things frozen about one day. Block ice can keep food on refrigerator shelves cooler. Dry ice can be added to the freezer unit. You should be aware, however, that you cannot touch dry ice and you should not breathe the vapors, so follow handling directions carefully. Refrigerators should be set at 40 degrees F. Thawed food Food still containing ice crystals or that is at refrigerator temperature can be refrozen. Discard any thawed food that has risen to room temperature and remained there for two hours or more. Remember: When in doubt, throw it out! Should you have large quantities of thawed out meat and vegetables to prepare, or if you just need a hearty stew for a stormy day, this versatile Stormy Day Stew recipe is the perfect remedy! You can use the ingredients listed or substitute your favorite meat or vegetables to create your own stew recipe.
STORMY DAY STEW This stew was designed to incorporate the meat or vegetables you have on hand and to add to or delete the ingredients listed
as desired. You also can use a can of creamy soup, other types of fresh, canned or frozen vegetables, or add in or serve the stew over cooked rice or pasta, if desired. 2 pounds beef or pork roast, cut into 1-inch cubes; or 3 pounds of chicken, cut into serving pieces; or 2 pounds ground meat (beef, chicken or turkey), browned and drained 1 can (14.5 ounces) diced or stewed tomatoes, or 2 large tomatoes, diced 1 can (10 1/2 oz) condensed beef or broth, undiluted or 1 1/2 cups water 1 1/2 cups frozen whole-kernel corn, thawed, or canned corn or canned beans (black, pinto, black-eyed peas, etc.), rinsed and drained 3 medium carrots, cut into 1/2-inch slices, or 1 1/2 cups frozen mixed vegetables, thawed, or canned mixed vegetables 2 large potatoes, scrubbed and cut into quarters 1 medium onion, cut in quarters, then sliced 2 garlic cloves, crushed, peeled and minced 1 tablespoon Italian seasoning (or 1.4 teaspoon each of dried oregano, thyme, rosemary, or any combination of the dried herbs) 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon ground black pepper 1/4 cayenne pepper 2 tablespoons flour 3 tablespoons hot water

Russell (“Three Kings”), “The Fighter” is an above-average boxing movie about the real-life story of Micky Ward (Mark Wahlberg) and his unconventional road to winning the light-welterweight title. Like most sports movies, “The Fighter” hammers home most of the usual cliches: A plucky underdog from the wrong side of
the tracks overcomes the odds to win the championship, etc. But thanks to some good performances by Wahlberg and Christian Bale (who plays his crack-addict brother), “The Fighter” rises slightly above the usual melodramatic fare we’re accustomed to.
(Frankie McLaren) suffers the loss of his twin brother and is sent to foster care.
“Hereafter” (PG-13) -- As director Clint Eastwood edges ever closer to the sweet release that only death can bring, it seems only natural that his latest film tackles the concept of The Afterlife.
“The Switch” (PG-13) -- Jennifer Aniston stars in yet another movie where she attempts comedy, and then cries a lot. In this one, she plays Kassi, a single woman who wants a baby, but is tired of waiting around for Mr. Right. So, she finds a suitable sperm donor (Patrick Wilson). At Kassi’s “insemination party,” her neurotic -- and very drunk -- best friend Wally (Jason Bateman) switches his baby batter with the donor’s. And because he’s three sheets to the wind, he promptly forgets what he’s done the next day.
Matt Damon stars as George Lonegan, a blue-collar fella who acquired psychic abilities following a childhood illness. His brother (Jay Mohr) wants to turn George into a celebrity, but he’d rather try to live a normal life with his girlfriend (Bryce Dallas Howard). Meanwhile, a French journalist (Cécile De France) has a near-death experience following a natural disaster in India and a London boy named Marcus
Through a series of events, George, the journalist and Marcus find each other as they seek answers to the mysteries of life and death.
Fast-forward seven years, and Wally begins to notice that Kassi’s son, Sebastian, exhib-

s an investor, you want your money to grow so that you can achieve your important goals, such as a comfortable retirement or college for your children. But you may also invest to increase your cash flow. In fact, without a strong cash flow, you may be forced to dip into your growth-oriented investments to pay for short-term needs — and if you do this repeatedly, you could damage your prospects for attaining your long-term goals. That’s why you’ll want to look at different ways of boosting your cash flow — one of which may be premium bonds.
Discussing current updates on the market and the economy in a relaxed, informal setting is a great way to get to know one another. Plus, the coffee’s on us. Please join us at the next meeting of our coffee club and bring a friend.

To understand the nature of premium bonds, you’ll first want to be familiar with the relationship between a bond’s price and its interest rate. When a bond is issued, it sells for face (“par) value, which is the amount returned to the bondholder when the bond matures. This bond also comes with a “coupon rate — the interest rate that the bond will pay throughout its lifetime. So, for example, if you paid $10,000 for a 10-year bond with a coupon rate of five percent, you would earn $500 per year, every year. If you held the bond until it matured, you’d also get your $10,000 back, provided the issuer doesn’t default. But if market interest rates move up to six percent, and you wanted to sell your five-percent bond before it matures, you’d have to offer it at a discount from the $10,000face value. Conversely, if market rates were to fall to four percent, you may be able to sell your $10,000 bond for more than its face value, because investors will be
willing to pay a premium to earn the higher interest rate. Now, let’s flip the equation, so that instead of being a bond seller, you’re a buyer. If you want to increase your investment income, you might be interested in a premium bond. You pay a premium for the bond in return for higher interest payments for the life of the bond, and, if you hold it until maturity, you’ll still get the face value back (again barring a default). Furthermore, because premium bonds pay higher interest, they also pay a greater proportion of their cash flow before they mature, in comparison to discounted or “par bonds. This helps provide for greater price stability, so if interest rates rise or fall, premium bond prices typically will not decrease or increase as much as those of discount or par bonds. Keep in mind that while premium bonds are attractive to you because of their higher interest rate, they are unattractive to bond issuers for the same reason. In fact, when market interest rates fall, some issuers may try to redeem (“call) these bonds so that they can issue new ones at the lower rates. Obviously, if your premium bond were to be called, your cash flow might take a hit. That’s why, when investing in premium bonds, you might want to look for those that have at least limited call protection — in other words, they can’t be redeemed for a certain number of years. Your portfolio should comprise a number of different investments designed to work together to meet your long-term financial goals. So give premium bonds some consideration as part of a well-diversified portfolio. Before investing in bonds you should understand the risks involved, including interest rate risk, credit risk and market risk. THE LAW ACCORDING TO STEVENS by Lisa Welch Stevens, Attorney at Law P.C.
TOO MANY CHIEFS AND NOT ENOUGH INDIANS = DEATH OF A BUSINESS © March, 2011, Lisa Welch Stevens, Esq.
T
his may sound “undemocratic” or even “un-American”, but after nearly 15 years of practicing business law, I am a firm believer in there being only one, clear, unambiguous “boss” of any business. The title of this article comes from the old idiom of “too many chiefs and not enough Indians”; i.e., if there are too many competing bosses, and consequently, too few workers, whatever endeavor they are engaged upon will ultimately fail. This is most obviously apparent with unrelated third parties who enter into business with each other. If each partner has an equal say, eventually there will be a deadlock, and the business will have to break up. Fifty/fifty partnerships eventually fail if each partner has an equal say in things. For this reason, I always strongly recommend that business partners either (1) do not have an equal say (i.e., one partner gets at least 51% say); or (2) that there be a formal agreement between the owners, specifying procedures for deadlock situations, and for one or more of the owners to exit the business if necessary. Trust me – you don’t want to go to litigation over these issues; a district court case that goes to trial can easily cost $30,000 - $50,000 or more.

and wife, things get a little trickier. Again, I usually recommend that, if the business is to be owned “jointly” by a husband and wife, that it not be owned 50%/50%, but at least 51%/49%. This puts the spouses on basically even footing economically, but avoids a deadlock situation. Another alternative is to have only one spouse as the actual title owner of the ownership interests in the business. As Colorado is a marital property state, in the event of a divorce, how an asset like a business is titled is not determinative of its status as sole or marital property. If it was acquired during the marriage, it will most likely be treated as marital property. A third alternative is to title ownership 50%/50%, but to, as with a third party partner, have a written agreement between husband and wife regarding resolution of deadlocks, and exit provisions.
It may seem ridiculous to take such precautions when the business partners are spouses, or other family members. However, the costs of not doing so can be significant – and I do not mean only financial costs. There WILL be a time when Where a business is to be owned by a husband partners disagree, if not sooner then later. And

the effects on personal relationships can be horrible. It is one thing to disagree over purchasing a piece of equipment, or hiring an employee. It is another thing to disagree over whether to sell a business, close it down, or expand it. The best time to make arrangements and agreements to avoid deadlocks is before any such deadlocks have arisen, while everyone still likes each other, and is getting along.
