“Wordplay” was a 2006 documentary featuring reputable crossword puzzle solvers and constructors and Will Shortz, editor of the New York Times crossword puzzle section. Half of the movie was set at the American Crossword Puzzle Tournament, and famous fans of “The New York Times” crossword puzzle had bit parts in the movie. Bill Clinton, Bob Dole and Jon Stewart were among them. Critic Peter Travers of the “Rolling Stone” had this to say about “Wordplay:” Boy, was I wrong. Margaret Farrar was the first crossword editor of “The New York Times” when they began publishing puzzles in 1942. Before retiring in 1969, Farrar created the idea that the puzzles would become more difficult from Monday to Saturday. She called Saturday’s puzzle a “two-cups-of-coffee puzzle,” likely for some, a whole pot.

In 1978, Shortz founded the American Crossword Puzzle Tournament. Today, he is still the director.
THE CROSSWORD COMPETITION Many states have crossword puzzle competitions, but the biggie in the U.S. is the American Crossword Puzzle Tournament, the nation’s oldest and largest competition. The event takes place this year March 18 through March 20 in Brooklyn, N.Y. Participants will solve eight original crossword puzzles specifically created for the tournament. Scoring is based on speed and accuracy, and prizes are awarded in more than 20 categories, with a grand prize of $5,000. Fun games in the evening, guest speakers and a wine and cheese reception provide a bit of relief and relaxation for the crossword whizzes.

Feyer, who grew up in San Francisco and graduated from Princeton, didn’t become an avid solver until he saw the movie “Wordplay.” That was five years ago, and today Feyer has a blog where every day he posts his time for solving the puzzles in a few newspapers, including “The New York Times” and the “Los Angeles Times.” On March 2, Feyer solved the NYT puzzle in 1.56 minutes; the LAT in 2.09 minutes.

As a freelance editor and proofreader for a publisher of crossword puzzles, Feyer has tried his hand at constructing puzzles and has sold at least one to The New York Times. But he said he’s better at solving than creating.
Last year, 643 contestants participated, and the overall winner was Dan Feyer.
Feyer will defend his title this year at the ACPT.

Retired as an English-as-second-language teacher, she considers herself a “word nerd.” Raphael’s time is a bit slower than Feyer – about five minutes for the easy ones and 20 to 30 for the hard ones. However, Raphael is 84 years old; last year, she won the ACPT in the 80-plus senior division for the second year in a row.

ow many people know and understand their pathway and live it? Not many it seems. I once explained to a person why it is so important to heal. I told him the purpose is to find and live joy. It is to know your pathway and live it with passion and integrity regardless of possible ridicule from others. His response to me was, “so…that is about 5% of the population.” I had to agree with him. It seems most people do not know and live their pathway. Some do, but not most. Many people are born with abilities that may not match what others want to see. An adolescent may be swayed to earn a degree in a safe area, such as accounting, medicine, law, or business rather than honor a natural ability. Other areas, it seems, are not ‘safe’ in many people‘s minds. There is some truth to that. Taking steps to find and live passion is a risk. There is no guarantee for income or social acceptance. However, it seems that with the last economic crisis and the next one looming over us, ‘safe’ careers are not really so ‘safe’ anymore. The company you work for could enter into bankruptcy, close up, or be bought out. Where does that leave the employees? Taking steps to find and live passion requires taking a risk by stepping out-

Much of the time, it is fear of survival. That fear of survival could be in the form of perceived future rejection from friends/ family members or economic fear of survival. I have asked people what if 20 people stood in front of you and 19 of those people ridiculed your choice or your passion? The answer has always been, “that is too scary to imagine. I wouldn’t do it.”

Someone once told me that a flower does not ask a tree if it can bloom, it simply does. It does not ask for permission or approval. It simply blooms because that is the natural course of action. How many people become the flower? Many become a piece of wood that just lays there with no passion or life. To know your pathway, to find joy, to begin searching, it is a wonderful practice to begin feeling and interpreting energy on an intuitive level.

Feeling and interpreting energy on an intuitive level allows the person to understand the conflicts that are occurring and resolve them. • On March 24, 1765, Parliament passes the Quartering Act, which required the colonies to house British soldiers in barracks provided by the colonies, local inns, livery stables, ale houses, uninhabited houses, outhouses or barns. Forcing colonists from their own homes was not the intent of the law. • On March 21, 1871, journalist Henry Morton Stanley begins his famous search through Africa for missing British explorer Dr. David Livingstone. When Stanley found him on Oct. 27, he stepped forward and stretched out his hand: “Dr. Livingstone, I presume?”
torpedoes to sink a British cruiser. Known as the “Chariot,” the manned torpedo was ridden by “pilots” to “drive” them to their targets in the harbor. • On March 23, 1962, Pakistan’s governor, Ayub Khan, gives first lady Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy a horse she nicknames “Black Jack.” Jackie chose “Black Jack” to serve as the ceremonial riderless horse during Pres. Kennedy’s funeral. • On March 27, 1973, the actor Marlon Brando declines the Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance in “The Godfather” as a protest against Hollywood’s portrayal of Native Americans in film. The first performer to turn down a Best Actor Oscar was George C. Scott, who declined to accept his award for “Patton” in 1971.
• On March 25, 1911, flames engulf the Triangle Shirtwaist Company factory in New York City, killing 145 workers. Only one elevator was operational in the 10-story building. There were two stairways down to the street, but one was locked from the outside. The inside fire hose was rotted and its valve was rusted shut.
• On March 22, 1983, the Pentagon awards a production contract worth more than $1 billion to AM General Corporation to develop 55,000 High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicles (HMMWV). Nicknamed the Humvee, the rugged vehicle was designed to transport troops and cargo. In 1992, a civilian version of the Humvee, known as the Hummer, went on sale.

If you have online access, go to www. pparx.org and click on Get Help Now to find out if you’re eligible. There are four steps: Tell them what medicines you currently take, give some information about yourself and the type of drug coverage you have, get the results, then print out the application. There might be more than one, if you’re applying to multiple programs. In the information section, you’ll need to disclose your age, ZIP code, total household income and eligibility for various types of coverage.

The programs have different criteria, so if you don’t qualify for one, you might qualify for another. The website will help you sort that out, and if you have multiple medications, you might well end up in more than one program. For example, you might have a Medicare drug discount card and still be eligible for a prescription assistance program. In most cases, you can fill out the program’s application right there online. Then you’ll print it out and take it to your doctor for his or her signature and specifics about your medication. Depending on your eligibility, you could end up not paying anything for your drugs. The prescriptions themselves will be sent either directly to you or to your doctor’s office. If you don’t have access to a computer, you can call 1-888-477-2669 to go through the eligibility questions. Then someone will send the forms to your doctor to complete and mail or fax back to them. Matilda Charles regrets that she cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into her column whenever possible. Write to her in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. HEART FAILURE CAN CAUSE FEET TO SWELL DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Please explain why I have to take my shoes off late every day because my feet and ankles have swollen and don’t fit into the shoes. I flop around in slippers without heels. In the morning, after a night’s sleep, my feet are back to normal. I am 77 and take no medicines. -- K.M. ANSWER: I can’t give you an unequivocal response because there are numerous causes of foot and ankle swelling. The medical name for such swelling is edema. Even in relatively healthy people, it occurs if people sit or stand for any length of time. Gravity pulls fluid out of the circulation, and it accumulates in the feet and ankles. This is especially true at older ages, when the circulatory system becomes somewhat leaky. For this kind of swelling, the solution is to elevate the legs when sitting. The most effective elevation is raising the legs above heart level, something that can be done only by lying down with pillows propping up the legs. Getting up and moving about is another way to prevent fluid accumulation in the feet. Heart failure is a more serious cause of such swelling. When the heart’s pumping action becomes feeble, fluid escapes from blood vessels and again accumulates in the ankles and feet. Kidney disease with retention of body fluid is another cause of edema. Liver disease does the same.
Specialized Adult and Pediatric
fluid that normally escapes the circulation to percolate around tissues and organs to provide nourishment and to wash away germs. Small vessels called lymphatics vacuum up this fluid and return it to the circulation. Anything that disrupts lymphatics can lead to ankle/foot swelling. An old infection and surgery are two such disruptors. Since ankle and foot swelling is a sign of many urgent medical conditions, don’t fool around with this. See your family doctor. The booklet on edema and lymphedema clearly describe these conditions and their treatment. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 106W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I am concerned about my brother, who is 63, diabetic, weighs 300 pounds and is 5 feet 8 inches tall. He falls asleep, wakes and falls asleep repeatedly at the table and when he sits down. Why? He says he’s tired. He picked a scab on his leg and blood squirted out 6 inches. What does that mean? -- Anon. ANSWER: Your brother might have sleep apnea. His body size suggests that it could be the reason for his daytime sleepiness. Spurting blood indi-

cates that an artery was broken. No one should pick at scabs, especially a diabetic. Your brother needs medical attention. He has to lose weight both for control of diabetes and for control of sleep apnea, if that is what he has. He is at great risk of incurring the complications of diabetes -- heart attack, stroke, blindness, kidney failure -- if he doesn’t start paying attention to his
health. ***

On a train bound for Venice, a Wisconsin schoolteacher (Depp) meets the alluring
Elise (Jolie), and by the time they reach their destination, a romance sparks -- as does mystery and intrigue! For you see, Elise isn’t whom she says she is. She is, in fact, an international thief who’s doublecrossed a particularly nasty gangster (Steven Berfkoff) and he’s dispatched a couple Russian hitmen to settle the score. Frank soon finds himself in over his head, as he and Elise go on the run in Venice being chased by the mob, Interpol and the local police. “The Times of Harvey Milk: The Criterion Collection” (Unrated) -- Heartfelt, compelling and groundbreaking, this 1984 Academy Award-winning documentary tells the inspirational and tragic story of Harvey Milk, the first openly gay politician elected to public office in America. Milk was elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1977 and after serving
only 11 months in office, was assassinated (along with the mayor) by former cop and fireman Dan White. At his trial, White’s attorneys used the infamous “Twinkie Defense,” claiming their client suffered from depression brought on by eating too much junk food. White was convicted not of murder but manslaughter, and sentenced to five years -- sparking riots throughout the city. “Yogi Bear” (PG) -- Dan Aykroyd and Justin Timberlake provide the voices of Yogi and Boo Boo in this animated/live-action kiddy flick based on the classic cartoon. Oh no! The evil mayor wants to close Jellystone Park to rezone the land to allow logging! Ranger Smith (Tom Cavanagh) and filmmaker Rachel (Anna Faris) concoct a scheme that just might save the park -- if only they can keep Yogi and Boo Boo from botching it with their antics.

MARCH 21, 2011
ARIES (March 21 to April 19) The week promises a calmer aspect. Although there might be some lingering effects of a recent job problem, things should continue to ease up. Also expect a change in a home-based situation.
SPORTS QUIZ ANSWERS 1. Seven (1946-52). 2. Minnesota’s Bert Blyleven. 3. Jerome Harrison ran for 286 yards in a game in 2009, besting Brown’s mark of 237 yards. 4. Wojciech Myrda of Louisiana-Monroe had 535 blocked shots (1998-2002). 5. Bob Gainey, Pavel Datsyuk, Guy Carbonneau and Jere Lehtinen. 6. Danny Harris, in 1987. 7. Betsy Rawls, in 1960.
FLASH BACK ANSWERS 1. The Kinks, in 1964, 1966 and 1967. 2. Translated it means “hurry fashion” or “fashion update.” While Depeche Mode had a few singles reach No. 1 in the U.S., they were on the dance charts, not pop. 3. The Doobie Brothers, in 1974 and 1979. 4. “Yesterday,” placing fourth on the Top 100 list. 5. Charlie Dore, in 1980. It was the very last song played on pirate station Radio Caroline, transmitting from offshore in the waters off England. 6. Troy Shondell, back in the ‘60s. The group Tommy James and the Shondells was named after him, although he was never in that band. 7. Prince, in 1989. “Batdance” made it onto the soundtrack for the “Batman” film.
TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) If you feel uneasy about a colleague’s suggestion, it might be that your wise inner Taurean guide is alerting you to a potential problem. Stepping away could turn out to be the right thing to do. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A family gettogether opens up new opportunities for renewing ties. It can be especially effective in dealing with disagreements that should have been, but never were, fully resolved. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) You might be surprised at the response you get to a recent decision. You might be even more surprised by the reasons behind it. In any event, you’ll learn something important. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Your aspects favor resolving any tensions left over from a recent incident. You might want to consider having a “clear the air” talk as soon as you can. A call can lead to a change of plans. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Avoid repeating yourself. If your first few efforts fail to connect, maybe it’s because you haven’t found the right way to get your message across. Try changing your approach.

LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Good intentions plus a strong resolve to succeed can take you where you want to go. Don’t give up just because someone suggests you might be pursuing an impossible cause. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) An unexpected setback can be a blessing in disguise. Use it to recheck your facts and how you’ve presented them. Meanwhile, look for ways to expand your contacts. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) You should finally be seeing a positive change in a recent personal situation. However, an on-the-job matter might need more attention than you realized. Stay with it. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) While you should be close to completing an important matter, you still need to focus on being focused. But things ease up in time for weekend fun with family and friends. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A certain matter might take an unexpected turn. Don’t simply accept it; ask for an explanation. What you learn might be helpful in shifting the situation around to your benefit. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Projecting a positive attitude helps restore calm even when you’re confronting some pretty stormy situations. Stay the course. The outcome will be well worth your efforts. BORN THIS WEEK: While you enjoy tradition and stability, you also appreciate the good things that change can bring.

MY APPLIANCES AREN’T THE ONLY ENERGY STARS IN MY HOUSE.
“Dust off your investment strategy. If there’s an area in your home that you haven’t looked at for a while, you may need to dust it off in preparation for the new season. And the same principle may apply to your investment strategy — if you haven’t examined it for a while, it may be time to clean it up to prepare for a new season in your life. After all, since you initially designed your investment strategy — that is, the total amount you invest, the percentages going into “growth and “income vehicles, the dollars going into taxable versus taxdeferred accounts and so on — many things may have changed for you, such as your employment situation, the number of children in your household and even your long-term goals. Consequently, you may need to revise your investment strategy in consultation with your financial advisor. “De-clutter your portfolio. The chances are pretty good that if you look around your house, you’ll find many things that are actually duplicates, such as those five coffeemakers you’ve accumulated over the years — so you decide to “purge a few. And
when you take a close look at your portfolio, you might find several investments that you’ve added over time and that are similar to each other. If that’s the case, you might help yourself by selling the “redundant investments and using the proceeds to buy different ones that can help you diversify your portfolio. (Keep in mind that while diversification can help reduce the effects of volatility on your portfolio, it can’t guarantee gains or prevent losses.) Prepare yourself for stormy weather. During springtime, we often experience heavy rains, hailstorms, high winds and other types of inclement weather. That’s why we keep our roofs in good shape, keep branches away from our homes and take other steps to protect our houses and property from the ravages of Mother Nature. You and your family could go through some rough “weather too, during the course of your lives, so you’ll want to make sure you have sufficient protection in the form of adequate life and disability insurance. Review your coverage to make sure it’s still adequate for your needs. Open up the windows of opportunity. After a long winter, you’ll find it pleasant to open the windows of your home and let in the sun and the air. And as an investor, you’ll find “windows of opportunity through which you can open yourself up to good investment possibilities. For example, even though we’ve clearly been in a challenging economy the past couple of years, a number of factors – such as low interest rates, improved corporate earnings and favorable stock valuations (the price you pay for a stock, relative to its earnings) — have actually meant that it’s been a pretty good environment for investors looking for quality stocks. By doing some financial spring cleaning, you may find that you’ve swept away some of the obstacles to helping achieve your goals. he Food and Drug Administration recently issued the following food recalls: breakfast burritos, sandwich wraps and sandwich spreads for undeclared allergens. Frozen fish that was not cleaned prior to freezing, leading to potential botulism. Wheat and soy in tortilla chips. Peanuts in strawberry banana smoothies. Salmon for presence of listeria. Cheese spread for undeclared soy and fish. Prescriptions didn’t fare any better: Contaminated alcohol wipes. Certain Warfarin (blood thinner) products for mislabeling. When it comes to your family’s safety, the more information you have, the better. On the FDA site [www.fda.gov] you can search for recalls by category -- food, drugs, medical devices, vaccines, animal and veterinary, cosmetics and more. Better yet, if you want to sign up for email alerts, go to www.fsis.usda.gov, the Food Safety and Inspection Site. The U.S. Department of Agriculture also issues recalls. Go to www.usda.gov and search for recalls. The USDA recalls concern mostly meats, such as beef with E. coli or chicken with salmonella, but others types of food also make it onto its list. Be sure to check there as well. Food, prescription drugs and medical supplies aren’t the only things that get recalled. Your vehicle also is a potential safety problem. There are two ways to keep up with possible issues with your vehicle: Technical Service Bulletins and full recalls. Technical Service Bulletins involve vehicle problems where there is no reported death from mechanical failures, but where there has been a pattern of consumer complaints. The difficulty is

It is vital, when making (or receiving) valuable gifts of money or property, to carefully think through how, and to whom, the property will be gifted: the name of the recipient, the identity of the recipient, etc. How will the property be titled? In to what account (or type of account) will it be deposited or transferred? These decisions impact not only legal issues (sole or marital property, etc.), but tax issues as well. It is best to consult a legal and financial advisor before giving or receiving any significant gift of money or property. www.snippetzonline.com LEWIS-PALMER SCHOOL DISTRICT IN TOP OF NATION ON ADVANCED PLACEMENT ACHIEVEMENT LIST Monument, CO — Lewis-Palmer School District 38 is one of fewer than 400 school districts in the nation being honored by the College Board with a place on its Advanced Placement (AP®) Achievement List. The award was given to only the top 2 percent of districts in the country, for opening AP classroom doors to a significantly broader pool of
students, while maintaining or improving the percentage of students earning high marks in those classes. From 2008 to 2010, Lewis-Palmer School District 38 has increased the number of students participating in AP from 314 to 379. The higher participation was accompanied by an ongoing improvement in the percentage of students earning AP Exam scores of 3 or higher, the score typically needed to earn college credit. The number of students earning college credit in those courses in the Lewis-Palmer District rose from 73% in 2008 to 82% in 2010. The AP Achievement List is made up of all school districts that are simultaneously expanding opportunity while improving performance. Many U.S. school districts have focused on expanding ac-
cess to AP courses as part of a strategy for fostering college readiness, but these efforts have also resulted in more students now earning lower scores of 1 or 2. Accordingly, there has been a slight decline since 2001 in the percentage of AP students scoring a 3 or better, a decline that is to be expected in any program attracting a broader cross-section of students.
LEWIS-PALMER SCHOOL DISTRICT #38 That said, helping more students learn at a higher level and earn higher AP scores is an objective that has been met successfully in AP courses in the Lewis-Palmer District. Lewis-Palmer’s two high schools currently offer a total
of eleven advanced placement courses in subjects like European History, Language and Composition, Government, Spanish, Art, Biology, Calculus, Chemistry, Literature, and Statistics. Additional AP courses are offered in alternative years based on student interest. “These districts are living proof that when access to AP is provided for the range and breadth of prepared and motivated students, districts can achieve even higher learning outcomes for their students — and the opportunity for so many more to earn college credit and placement — than when AP opportunities were restricted to a smaller segment of the high school population,” said Trevor Packer, vice president of the College Board’s Advanced Placement Program®.
