As the Europeans settled in to America, the pecan began evolving, and today there are recipes galore for pecan lovers. Pecan pie wins over pumpkin and apple pie as the favorite for Thanksgiving. So, it’s appropriate that some pecan aficionados decided to designate April 14 as National Pecan Day.

here is no doubt; abuse is traumatic on multiple levels. The depth of the trauma, because of abuse, can vary person to person. However, the abuse created an emotional injury that needs to be address, regardless of the period in which the abuse happened. Abuse occurs when one person or multiple people engage in hurtful activities, words, and energy toward another person or group of people. This can occur in a home setting between parent and child, child to parent, sibling to sibling, spouse to spouse, or partner to partner. This can occur between two peers or between adult and child. Another way abuse occurs is between groups. One group may verbally abuse another group. For example, pro-life and pro-choice groups may verbally abuse each other. Whenever abuse has occurred, an emotional injury is the result. If a physical injury was the result, many times that injury can physically heal. However, the emotional injury does something a bit different. Emotional injuries are not seen with the eyes. The results of the injury are seen, such as anger, depression, even suicide, but the actual injury is not. As a result, the emotional injury can hide and become suppressed. If one can see energy and see one’s elec-

tromagnetic energy field, then one could see the injury. Most do not see the energy field. The person who has been abused needs first to be willing to examine the extent of the emotional injury and any emotions connected to it. When that has occurred, that person can examine why the injury was created. Did one person enter into a disrespectful relationship in which abuse occurred? Did a child become the target of anger from a parent? Why did it occur? This part can be difficult, as it requires the one who was abused to look at the situation from a different perspective rather than a victim perspective. This is never to excuse the abuse; it is to identify why it occurred.

Unique Painting Techniques For the Kid’s Rooms Part 1 of 2

The most important considerations when developing a color scheme for a child's room are individuality, style and personality.

Your child's friends can write their signature on the wall with chalk when they visit. They can also write poetry, draw pictures, make lists, write quotes, etc.

Any Real Estate agent will tell you that NUETRAL is a must when selling your home, but if you're not selling….let them have some fun!

Glow in the Dark Paint Glow in the dark paint comes in a variety of glowing colors, including green, blue, purple and red. It can be applied over traditional room paints for an added nighttime flair. A room can be painted in standard, professional colors during the daytime, only to become a wild, graffiti-laden room in the night. Glow in the dark paints can also be used to complement themed rooms. A room that is decorated in a space theme can be coated in glow in the dark paint, allowing the stars and planets to glow all night long.

Discuss the look your child wants for his/her bedroom. Brainstorm color schemes, textures, themes and anything else that would reflect their personality. Once you have your ideas narrowed down, simply "Google" a description of the "look" you want and expand on your ideas with the internet!

D!

SOL

There's always the splatter, sponge, fingerpaint and stamping techniques that have been used for years, but here are some unique ideas that will create a purposeful "look" in which your children can express themselves.

Textured Paint You can get textured paint that looks like sand, metal, marble, blue jeans, glass, fabric, etc. If done correctly, textured walls can create a whole new dimension to the look of a room. Take some time to discuss textured paint technique classes with your local home improvement store. Metallic spray paints are a great way to add some glitz to a room. Quotes Another fun idea is to paint quotes, song lyrics or bible verses in various spots, in various font sizes. Use stencils of various fonts that you can find at your local hardware store. • On April 5, 1614, Pocahontas, daughter of the chief of the Powhatan Indian confederacy, marries English tobacco planter John Rolfe in Jamestown, Va. Pocahontas had been kidnapped and used as a hostage for peace negotiations. By the time she was released, she had fallen in love with John Rolfe. • On April 9, 1859, a 23-year-old Missouri youth named Samuel Langhorne Clemens receives his steamboat pilot’s license. During his time as a pilot, he picked up the term “Mark Twain,” a boatman’s call noting that the river was only 2 fathoms deep, the minimum depth for safe navigation. He used it as a pseudonym in his writing for nearly 50 years. • On April 10, 1866, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is founded in New York City by philanthropist and diplomat Henry Bergh. Bergh’s impassioned accounts of the horrors inflicted on animals convinced the New York State legislature to pass the ASPCA charter.

• On April 6, 1896, the Olympic Games, a long-lost tradition of ancient Greece, are reborn in Athens -- 1,500 years after being banned by Roman Emperor Theodosius I. King Georgios I of Greece and a crowd of 60,000 spectators welcomed athletes from 13 nations to the international competition.

• On April 4, 1913, Chicago bluesman Muddy Waters is born in Clarksdale, Miss. Born McKinley Morganfield, he wrote “Rollin’ Stone,” “Hoochie Coochie Man,” “Mannish Boy” and “Got My Mojo Working,” songs that would later provide inspiration to Bob Dylan. • On April 7, 1920, classically trained sitar virtuoso Ravi Shankar is born in Varanasi, India. The Beatles studied under Shankar and experimented with the distinctive sitar sound in songs such as “Norwegian Wood” and “Within You, Without You.”

A crowd of 53,775 people, the largest in the history of Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium, was with Aaron that night to cheer when he hit a 4th-inning pitch off the Los Angeles Dodgers’ Al Downing.

But here’s how you can learn to do it: Buy a 4mg (pronounced “four meg) flash drive at any store with an electronics department: Walmart, Radio Shack and so on. Don’t pay more than $15. From there you take the flash drive to a photo store. They can download those files and create actual photos for you, or with a little help you can do it yourself. As a pricing example, if you want to print out 4-by-6-inch photos, you can do it for about 30 cents each at the Walmart photo lab kiosk. Or, they’ll help you. Second best bet is to hire a trustworthy child geek to download those photos for you or put them in a computer directory and show you how to get to them. First best bet: Tell people you’re fine with handling e-mail, but you can’t view or print the digital photos they send. Ask them to send you actual prints!

people who have a ballooning valve are not considered to have a serious medical condition. In only a handful of these people does a significant leak of blood occur. Those are the people who require treatment, and those are the people who take antibiotics before certain dental procedures.

MITRAL VALVE PROLAPSE RARELY A HEALTH THREAT DEAR DR. DONOHUE: About 40 years ago, when I was in my 30s, I was examined by a famous heart doctor who went over me with great care and concluded I had mitral valve prolapse. He put me on medicine, which I have taken to this day. He also insisted I take antibiotics before dental work. That doctor died, and my new doctor, quite young, says I don’t have mitral valve prolapse and that I don’t need medicine or antibiotics before dental work. He saw that I doubted him, so he had me get an echocardiogram. It showed no mitral valve problem. I still wonder about this. I can’t accept that my former doctor was wrong. -- J.P. ANSWER: The mitral valve regulates blood flow from the upper left heart chamber -- the left atrium -- to the lower left heart chamber, the ventricle. When the ventricle contracts, it pumps blood out of the heart. Simultaneously the mitral valve closes to prevent backflow of blood into the left atrium. Mitral valve prolapse means that the mitral valve balloons upward into the left atrium during heart pumping and might leak blood. In the 1960s, around the time you were diagnosed with this condition, mitral valve prolapse was first described and became a very popular diagnosis. Many of those who were then given a diagnosis of it really didn’t have it. The condition was written about in newspapers and magazines, and dire consequences were ascribed to it. Now, with new knowledge of how this valve works and with new equipment such as echocardiograms (sound-wave pictures of the heart), a clearer picture of the mitral valve is obtainable. Most

Your doctor wasn’t wrong. He was a victim of the inadequate knowledge of that era. Heart-valve disease is quite common. The booklet on it describes the more prevalent varieties. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -No. 105W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: What is your opinion of prolotherapy? I have quite severe osteoarthritis in both thumbs and have been receiving cortisone injections for it. I was told that prolotherapy would be more effective than cortisone and that the relief would be longer-lasting. -- B.N. ANSWER: Prolotherapy involves the injection of various substances around damaged ligaments and tendon attachments. It triggers inflammation. The inflammation, in turn, promotes healing by stimulating collagen formation.

Often the material injected is dextrose (sugar) mixed with lidocaine (an anesthetic). Some reports say that it is quite successful in things like tennis and golf elbow, where the pain comes from ligament tears. Other reports question its efficacy. It won’t hurt you. I find it hard to believe it is more effective than cortisone for the inflam-

mation of arthritis. ***

hen at the grocery store buying healthy foods, don’t simply trust the “Fat Free” label, check the ingredients. When buying a new car, its shine and polish aren’t enough, it’s the miles, transmission, and oil that make a difference. Or for instance, when questioning a current lover about where they were, (they claim to have been at the Dry Cleaner for six hours) looking to see that all their sweaters and silk lie crumpled in the laundry bin help reveal what’s really going on… Because, people, it’s all in the details. Like, for an obscure example, if a whacked out writer tells you to spend your summer bowling in a League at Pinz Bowling Center, dig a little deeper. Here are the niceties of a Pinz Summer

League: Your options are wide open. There’s the “Anytime League” where you can bowl, well, anytime. There’s the “Give Back While You Bowl League”, where all of your league fees benefit a beneficial charity. There’s the “Lousy Bowlers League” where you can forget all those pretentious bowling experts and bowl for fun against each other, in

a cut throat battle for who’s the best! There’s the “Company Challenge League” where competitive products get put aside and things get settled where it really matters… on the lanes. There’s the “Just for Kids League” where big people are not welcome, except of course when it comes time to pay the bill. And there’s the “Singles Only League” where love is a wet dollar in a dry goods store. As you can

see, your options are plentiful at Pinz this summer. So now that you have all the details, now that you know the truth, join a league – sign-ups start this April. The five-disc set contains the original film, plus “Legacy” in Blu-Ray, Blu-Ray 3D and digital copy, along with a special-features disc loaded with behind-the-scenes goodies. One of the more intriguing special features is the Disney Second Screen option that allows you to watch the film on your TV while interactive extras pop up on your

iPad or computer. “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader” (PG) -- The Pevensie kids are back for this third installment of the timeless C.S. Lewis fantasy series. This time instead of entering Narnia via the wardrobe, the children are sucked into a painting of the Narnian ship, “The Dawn Treader,” where they must help King Caspian save the people of Narnia.

DOG OF THE WEEK “Little Fockers” (PG-13) -- Ben Stiller and Robert De Niro return for another round of low-brow shenanigans involving vomiting, erectile dysfunction and scraping the bottom of the Fockers Is Funny Cuz It Sounds Like The F-Word comedy well. Maybe next year they can do a spin-off called “Meet The Fartz.”

To understand the scope of the problem facing people in your situation, consider this: One out of every eight Americans aged 40 to 60 is raising a child while caring for an aging parent, according to the Pew Research Center. The definition of “eldercare can range from having the parent living in one’s home to helping pay for the parent’s stay in an assisted living or nursing home facility. When you consider the costs involved in this type of care, added to the expenses of raising your children and possibly even providing some financial support to them as young adults, it’s easy to see how you could potentially face enormous strains, both emotionally and financially. To help ease this burden, consider these suggestions: Save. As a Sandwich Generation member, you’re probably within shouting distance of your own retirement — so you need to save for it.

This may not be easy. You don’t know how much financial support you may someday have to provide your elderly parents — and even after your children are grown, they may need some help from you. Unfortunately, in helping these “boomerang children, many people disrupt their day-today cash flow and raid their savings. That’s why it’s important to try to “pay yourself first by deferring part of each paycheck into a 401(k) and by automatically moving money each month from your checking or savings account into an IRA. Talk. Many people in the “Greatest Generation (over age 80) have not even prepared a will. If your parents are in that group, you may want to talk to them about taking action. Also, find out who, if anyone, is handling their investments. And ask if your parents understand how Medicare works and if they need to add supplemental health insurance, such as Medigap. Plus, you need to find out if your parents have created a power of attorney or health care directive. It’s best to have these conversations sooner rather than later. Delegate. You eventually may have to take some responsibility for your parents’ care — but you don’t have to do it alone. You could, for example, work with a financial services provider that offers trust services, which can be invaluable if your parents are incapacitated and useful even if they aren’t. A professional trust officer can, among other duties, help manage your parents’ investments, pay their bills, keep their records and supervise distribution of their assets to beneficiaries. In short, a qualified trust officer can make life a lot easier for you. Stress Awareness Month lasts only 30 days, but by taking the right steps, you can de-stress yourself for many years to come. After all, just because you’re in the Sandwich Generation, it doesn’t mean you have to be “squished. This article was written by Edward Jones for use by your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor. Forty-six pieces of artwork created by those with Alzheimer’s will be auctioned during both a silent and live auction. Eighteen pieces of professional art are paired with the Alzheimer’s work in addition to 35 original art palettes all donated by local professional artists. Proceeds support Alzheimer’s programs and services as well research to develop better treatments and to eventually find a cure. The watercolors selected for the art auction were created in the Alzheimer’s Association Memories in the Making art programs in 17 locations throughout the Colorado Springs area. Approximately 1,000 pieces were submitted for the jury process. That means Alzheimer’s artists were engaged in an activity that provides socialization, improves self esteem, creates a sense of purpose and often times simply joy. That joy is also shared with the families of the artist, as memories often long forgotten or no longer able to be shared in words are retold through art. “When the Alzheimer’s Association staff

The art auction will also include art by accomplished community artists, who create amazing works to complement our Alzheimer’s art, as well as our signature original art palette creations, balloon prize drawings and viewing of the live art selections. I climbed the trees just as well as the boys. I made sure of that! The event begins at 5:30 pm with live music and the silent auction. The live auction begins at 7:15 pm. We invite you to come have fun, food, art, music, and other exciting events. Come to the event this year and enjoy a total art experience! Some answers can be found at Allsup.com, however. Allsup has provided Social Security disability claims assistance since 1984, the first company in the country to do so. A press release from Allsup outlines some of the details.

DISABLED? DON’T OVERPAY YOUR TAXES

I

f you’re disabled and receive Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or take the Earned Income Tax Credit, you may be paying too much in income taxes. The rules about tax credits and deductions are confusing. In some cases, you might have money coming back to you.

--Up to half of your SSDI benefits are taxable. Take half of those benefits and add them to all of your other income. If that comes to $32,000 for couples or $25,000 for an individual for the year 2010, you’ll likely owe taxes. But the average SSDI recipient has a far lower total income. File a tax return anyway, as you could be due a refund for certain credits. --If you received a lump-sum SSDI benefit and file using that whole amount, you’ll likely pay tax, as it makes your income look bigger. Instead, spread that amount out over the years. The Internal Revenue Service allows you to do that, but don’t take a chance by doing this yourself. Get tax help. --Workman’s compensation usually isn’t taxable, and neither are long-term disability benefits IF you paid for them with after-tax dollars. If your employer paid the premiums, it counts as income. Again, get assistance.

The 2011 Edible Book Festival will bring together foodies, librarians, teachers, bibliophiles, chefs, bakers, innovators, creators, and kids. “We had so much fun last year that it was a given we would do it again,” said Teri Switzer, UCCS Kraemer Family Library Dean. “And we are very pleased to have PPLD working with us as we plan the 2011 Edible Books Festival. Fun, food, and books – no one could ask for much more.” The rules are simple – make edible art that has something to do with books (i.e. a play on the title, looks like a book, refers to a book’s character, etc.). Prizes will be awarded in five categories: culinary, literary, artistic, student baked (P/K-8) and a People’s Choice. Drop off your creation at the Kraemer Family Library on the UCCS campus (the building with the clock tower) by 5:30 p.m. on Friday, April 15. The reception will begin at 5:30 p.m. and our judges will

announce the prizes at 6:30 p.m. The judges are Paula Miller (Executive Director PPLD, literary qualities), Brent Beavers (Chef at Giuseppe’s Old Depot Restaurant, culinary qualities) and Claire Rau (Visual And Performing Arts Department at UCCS, artistic qualities). This free program will be held from 5:30 - 7 p.m. on Friday, April 15 in the third floor apse of the UCCS Kraemer Family Library at 1420 Austin Bluffs

Parkway. Parking is free after 5 p.m.
