hen rock n’ roll hit the music scene in the 1950s, one could say that “all hell broke loose.” The songs and the artists behind them were in cahoots with Satan himself, according to many parent groups, government and religious organizations and private enterprise. As the 50s rolled into the 60s, the rock-solid baby boomers began rebelling against societal norms and the “establishment.” Many naysayers of their music believed that the song lyrics and stage presence of these newbie recording artists were weakening the foundation of America – feeding teens and young adults with cultish-like propaganda.

There was only one way to silence the evil music: censorship. Banning music, books or whatever has created controversy for decades worldwide because what is offensive to some is not to others. And what was offensive in the 1950s is church music compared to the 21st century.

Live Crew. • 2000: A Louisiana sheriff confiscated the Disney Tarzan soundtrack and music by Britney Spears and Snoop Doggy Dog from a roller skating rink owner. His reason: The music played in the rink spawned a fight in the parking lot. A federal judge eventually found that the sheriff was out of line censoring the music and ordered him to return the music.
IF I COULD TURN BACK TIME
Also in 2000, a private school in Texas suspended four students who attended a Backstreet Boys concert, which violated a school policy forbidding “involvement in inappropriate music [or] dancing.”
Here’s a snapshot of censorship that took place in each decade starting with 1950, and the variety of reasons and people behind the ban.
CAN’T GET NO SATISFACTION
• 1955: The Juvenile Delinquency and Crime Commission of Houston, Texas, banned more than 30 songs. The songs were considered obscene.

• 1968: The war in Viet Nam became one of the most unsettled and volatile eras in the nation. An anti-war sentiment led to bold protests against the government and the men and women in the military, creating a sharp divide in the country. The Doors’ song “Unknown Soldier” was banned from the air at radio stations throughout the country because the lyrics were antiwar.
enforcement of morality as well as individual or organized beliefs and values? Eric Nuzum has written numerous blogs and a book on music censorship. In his book, “Parental Advisory: Music Censorship in America,” Nuzum addressed the factors that spark censorship.
MORALITY ISSUES As previously noted, a revolution of attitudes took place in the 1950s and 1960s. The likes of Elvis, the Beatles and many others ignited a sense of independence from and anarchy toward authority and tradition. Even in the 1920s, people complained about flappers and jazz musicians, but those performances were limited to certain venues. The advent of technology

• 1989: Another music goddess, Cher, known for her aversion to wearing a lot of clothing, shook up even the music industry with her “If I Could Turn Back Time” video. Cher donned fishnet stockings and what appeared to be 3-inch-wide black electrical tape to cover body parts that otherwise exposed would scream “nude.” MTV would only air the video after 9 p.m. after slicing the parts of the video (like Cher’s “bum” shots) that begged for censorship.

widened the avenues of communication. In the 1950s, radio allowed access to all kinds of music, which prompted music censorship – especially in light of the new attitudes about sex, drugs and rock n’ roll.
RACIAL MOTIVATIONS Blame the blues. Rhythm and blues were introduced in the 1950s and early 1960s, and the R&B genre was dominated by black musicians. The “soul” of R&B was about passion and desire, including sex and drugs. When white people, especially teenagers and young adults, started following R&B, the older generation feared the corruption of the younger generation.

Although the gap in music tastes has narrowed from generation to generation, the latest trends in music don’t always reflect the values of the older generation. Mick Jagger and Janis Joplin were hardly contemporaries of Frank Sinatra and Connie Francis.
And censorship wasn’t confined to parents and grandparents.
The Great Depression-era generation – who also fought in World War II – was raised to respect authority, which included the head of a household, the priest, the doctor, the local sheriff and the U.S. president (no matter the party). It’s what they did. Their kids, however, questioned authority and

sought freedom from society’s rules. It made sense that the music would be different and likely scary to the older generation.
FEAR Nuzum says the “root of all the factors” leading to music censorship is fear. And fear of change is widespread, but much of the music being censored mirrors the changes in societal issues and values. From the Vietnam War to today’s Iraq War, and from the advent of the sexual revolution to today’s “culture wars,” music is recognized as a potential source of power to change values, ideas, and beliefs – as well as to influence actions. Those who fear this change try to stop it by censorship, even when, as history has shown us, censorship is futile when change is inevitable. - Eric Nuzum
THE THUNDER ROLLS Tipper Gore (Al’s wife) was a lightning rod for change after she was incensed that the album “Purple Rain” by Prince contained sexually suggestive words. Gore pressured the music industry to post voluntary warning labels on records with obscene lyrics; and, in 1985, Gore cofounded the nonprofit Parents Music Resource Center to allow parents more control over the music industry. Many song artists raised thunderous voices decrying Gore’s idea. Frank Zappa cried censorship and called Gore a “cultural terrorist.” However, Gore had a power team of women in Washington who also wanted transparency in the music industry, and the PMRC is today still playing musical watchdog.

• When the Rolling Stones introduced their song “Let’s Spend the Night Together” in the 1960s, many radio stations pulled the song because of its bawdy lyrics. In 1967, Mick Jagger and the boys, as they awaited their entrance on television’s “Ed Sullivan Show,” were asked by the network and Sullivan to change their lyrics to “Let’s Spend Some Time together.” The Stones agreed.

• In 1965, radio stations across the country banned the Rolling Stones hit “I Can’t Get No Satisfaction” because of sexually suggestive lyrics. • Ed Sullivan embraced the radical music of the 60s, and his Sunday night television show featuring many of the new rogue artists garnered plenty of viewers. Obviously, as in the Rolling Stones, Sullivan didn’t have carte blanche to allow anything to fly on his show. In 1963, Bob Dylan was scheduled for Sullivan’s show and told the producers he would be singing “Talkin’ John Birch Society Blues” for the television audience. The John Birch Society was an anti-government group highly visible in the media at the time. When Dylan rehearsed the song for the producers, they didn’t object. But, about two hours before the show aired, the producers did a turnabout and nixed the song. Dylan walked out and didn’t return. • In 1967, the Ed Sullivan Show producers asked the Doors to change the lyrics “girl, we couldn’t get much higher” in the song, “Light My Fire.” Jim Morrison and his cohorts agreed to the request, but they didn’t follow through during the show and sang the original lyrics.

ast, present, and future all occur at the same time. This is a difficult concept for many to grasp. However, Albert Einstein was one of the first ones to discuss this through theory of relativity. He taught that time is not separated by past, present, and future, but rather that concept of separation is an illusion. This concept can also be connected to the concept of past, present, and future lives. Albert Einstein discussed his concept of time. “You have to accept the idea that subjective time with its emphasis on the now has no objective meaning…the distinction between past, present and future is only an illusion, however persistent.” Many people disagreed with Einstein’s theory as many people disagree with the concept of past, present, and future lives. Science theorizes that energy is not destroyed, but transferred. One can take this theory and ponder whether past lives occur at all. If one was pondering that, one could look at it in simpler terms. Why would a child have any irrational fears? Why would a person have an irrational fear of being murdered? Why is it that some people develop magnificent abilities in art, music, or acting and others do not? The answer is consciousness is energy and energy is consciousness. One can take the concept of energy and consciousness and ponder, does an unborn child’s energy exist prior

to the physical birth? If one’s energy exists prior to birth, does the energy also exist prior to conception? If the energy existed prior to conception, how much time, did it occur prior to conception? If there is no real past, present, and future, can one’s consciousness, which is energy, exist 2,000 years ago as people see time? If one’s consciousness existed 2,000 years ago, can one create an emotional wound, since people carry emotions in their consciousness?

That means if one had a ‘prior’ lifetime, and energy is not destroyed, but transferred, the consciousness would simply transfer as well. A small child who carries an irrational fear of water may have had a ‘prior’ life in which he or she drowned. A person, who has an irrational fear of being murdered, perhaps was murdered in a ‘prior’ life. However, examine the concept that is there is no ‘prior’ life, simply a transfer of consciousness. If that were the case, would a person need to heal a trauma from a transferred consciousness? If a person desires to heal all pain, the answer is yes.

• Who would imagine Garth Brooks among the censored? But he was in 1991. Domestic violence was portrayed in his video for “The Thunder Rolls,” which led to a few T.V. networks like CMT and TNN banning the video from the airwaves. It didn’t matter to the television networks that Brooks had the support of shelters housing victims of domestic violence. Nonetheless, the song went to the top of the charts that year and won the Country Music Awards video of the year.
Life Energy Flow Tai Yi can assist with healing a trauma through the treatment titled Fluid Behavior. Fluid Behavior is for people who have a tendency to blame for their life issues rather than take responsibility. The most important relationship a person can have is with him or herself and this treatment assists a person in healing that relationship. The treatment will surface deep uncomfortable emotions. When those emotions are worked with and resolved, a deep sense of connection and understanding with oneself occurs.
• Another late songster also seems a far cry from censorship, but John Denver’s song “Rocky Mountain High” was banned from many radio stations because it was a “drug-related song.” Obviously, the censors had never felt the natural high from being in the presence of our Rocky Mountains. • In 2007, AT & T did a cybercast of a Pearl Jam concert, which included a song by Pink Floyd in which Pearl Jam changed some lyrics to “George Bush,
Tami Urbanek
leave this world alone,” and “George Bush, find yourself another home.” AT & T omitted the lyrics from the Webcast, saying it was accidental. • Hip-hop has been a bed of controversy because of the genre’s reference to demeaning words and racial labeling. Hip-hop and rap have been blamed for many of society’s problems, from crime to sexism. But in the end, is the music the problem or is it the listener? In 2007, Anderson Cooper hosted a segment on hip-hop music and its crime-happy, anti-police culture on “60 Minutes.” Cooper interviewed rapper Cam’ron, who was shot in 2005, about snitching. Cooper said he couldn’t cooperate with the police because it would hurt his professional reputation and defy his upbringing. Cooper asked Cam’ron what he would do if he lived next door to a serial killer. Cam’ron replied that he would move. Is Cam’ron or any other musician just catering to what sells or is the real question “Why does this stuff sell?”

Extremely popular, Pyle had been at the London Blitz of 1941 and saw action in North Africa, Italy, France and the Pacific. Here’s how a reverse mortgage works: If you have equity in your home, you can enter into a reverse mortgage that will pay you money for the rest of your life, or until you sell the house. Money comes in every month, or you have a line of credit to draw on. If a borrower dies or sells, the loan is paid off when the home is sold, but never more than the home is worth.

No matter how it happened, HUD retroactively changed the rules and demanded that the loans be paid off in full when the original signers died, no matter the value of the homes. When the remaining seniors couldn’t raise the money and couldn’t sell for the amount demanded, foreclosure followed. At the same time that they demanded full repayment of the loan from surviving spouse and heirs, HUD was allowing third-party purchasers to buy those homes at below appraised market value. If you’re determined to do a reverse mortgage, get expert advice. You’ll be required to attend counseling, but don’t stop there. Seek other advisers. And if you’re a couple, beware having only one of you sign.

Specialized Adult and Pediatric If a woman has another infection with the same bacterium, the doctor can put her on the same antibiotic for a longer period of time and can continue to treat long after symptoms have gone. The continued treatment is with a reduced antibiotic dose.
BLADDER INFECTIONS ARE BANE OF WOMEN DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Please explain urinary tract infections. Why do they recur? My doctor prescribes antibiotics, but shortly after I’ve completed taking them, I have another infection. What do you suggest as treatment? A pharmacist told me that I needed one or two days in the hospital to flush out my kidneys. -- S.A. ANSWER: Urinary tract infections fall into one of two types. Upper tract infections indicate that the kidneys are involved. These are serious and lesscommon infections. Lower urinary tract infections are bladder infections, and they are very common. That’s the kind of infection I believe you have. Women are prone to develop bladder infections for a number of reasons. One, the tube (urethra) that empties their bladder is much shorter than in males, so bacteria can gain access to the bladder more easily. Secondly, the opening of the female urethra is in a place with a large population of bacteria. And thirdly, sexual relations massage bacteria into the female urethra and bladder. A bladder infection -- cystitis -- provokes frequent trips to the bathroom, an urgent need to quickly empty the bladder or suffer an accident, and pain, usually described as burning, during urination. Women with repeated bladder infections need to be evaluated to see if the infection is a relapse (an infection with the same bacterium) or a new infection (infection with a different bacterium). The approach to treatment hinges on that information.
Allergy and Asthma Care Now in Monument Enjoy the Beauty of Colorado Without the Sneeze or the Wheeze.
Another way to prevent a recurrence is to give the woman a prescription for an antibiotic that she takes after intercourse. Home remedies can be helpful. Drinking 8 ounces of cranberry juice daily benefits prevention of the most common cause of these infections. The kidney flush suggestion is not a good one.

Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I have a small lump on the back of my left wrist. It’s soft and doesn’t hurt even when I push on it. It’s been there for at least two months. I don’t remember injuring it. Lumps freak me out. My brother had bone cancer. When I see things sprouting on me, I think of cancer. Could it be? -- F.L.

rence rate is very high. ANSWER: It’s not likely to be bone cancer. A more likely bet is a ganglion. That’s a kind of cyst filled with thick, gelatinous material. It communicates with the wrist joint or with one of the wrist tendons. If it doesn’t hurt or interfere with wrist motion, you can ignore it. It if does, a doctor can remove it without much fuss. Many ganglion patients want their doctor to drain it. Drainage is possible, but the recur-

GRAND OPENING - MAY 7TH
KEEP YOUR PARENTS AND BOWL By Nick J. Yanez
R
emember the first time you met your third foster parents? It was a magical feeling, one of renewal and warmth. Because this time, you weren’t going to mess it all up. Not like the time you burnt down your real parent’s home, so they sent you off. Not like the time you cut off your second dad’s left pinky by not hearing him say “Don’t start the car” while his hand was wedged in the radiator’s cooling fan. It won’t end up like the time you hit the ball foul, and straight through the window of your second foster’s grandmother’s house, either. No, this time, it’ll be different. Your new parents (who were kind enough to bring you in) bowl at Pinz Bowling Center. Because, while being a lousy cook, a lousy mechanic, and a lousy baseball player have cost you a lot of love and happiness, being a lousy bowler will be celebrated. That’s because Pinz
is bringing back its “Lousy Bowlers League”! Starting Tuesday, April 26th at 6:30pm, Pinz presents a cool way to spend the summer. It’s a sport and hobby; and best of all, there’s no pressure to be good. The “Lousy Bowler League” is a great way for friends and families to enjoy casual bowling in a weekly competitive format. Tuesday happens to be one of the worst days of the week, so having a glorious ritual mid-week may just animate the solemn day. You’ll also be indoors, where the flies won’t get you (as we take the ones we find and place them promptly in an ice cube). There’s only room for four members per team, so start scouting, as time is running short. And remember, just pick the people you like the most, natural skill is not needed. In fact – good bowlers need not apply. So have some fun with a summer league at Pinz Bowling Center, and go get a strike! Well, maybe a spare… I think nine is good too.

COTTAGE-CHEESE CHREMSLACH
PASSOVER LEEK AND OLIVE BITES
T
he chremslach is applied to any number of very different, usually fried, matzo meal pancakes. These cheese pancakes are wonderful for a midweek Passover dairy breakfast, lunch or dinner. I like them topped with sour cream, but if you have a sweet tooth, try applesauce or orange marmalade or other preserves, or a sprinkling of sugar, or top them with sour cream and strawberries macerated with some sugar so they exude their juices and form a sauce. 4 eggs 1 cup 4 percent cottage cheese 3/4 cup whole or low-fat milk 3/4 teaspoons salt, or more to taste 1 tablespoon sugar (optional) 1 cup matzo meal Grapeseed or other acceptable Passover oil, for frying 1. In a bowl, with a fork, beat together the eggs, cottage cheese, milk, salt and sugar. Stir in the matzo meal. Set aside for 10 minutes. 2. In a 10- to 12-inch skillet, over medium heat, heat enough oil to cover the bottom by a scant 1/8 inch. When the oil is hot, pour a scant 1/4 cup of the batter into the skillet. It should form a pancake about 4 inches in diameter. If it is too thick to spread this much, add a little more milk. The pancake should sizzle immediately. Fry until the first side is golden brown, 60 to 90 seconds, depending on how hot the oil is. Turn the pancake. The second side takes less time, about 30 seconds.

3 leeks, each preferably 1 to 1 1/2 inches in diameter, white and pale green parts only, trimmed 1 tablespoon margarine or butter, cut up 1/2 cup water 1/4 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves Salt Pepper 15 pitted Kalamta olives, cut in half 30 kosher-for-Passover crackers, such as Tam Tams 1. Cut each leek crosswise into 1/2-inch-thick rounds; keep rounds intact. Place in large bowl and cover with water. Gently swish to remove any grit. Lift out leeks into colander. Repeat with fresh water at least once or until leeks are clean. Drain in colander. Pat dry.

2. In 12-inch skillet, melt margarine on medium. Add leeks in single layer. Cook 5 minutes or until browned. Turn carefully and add water, thyme, 1/8 teaspoon salt, and 1/8 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper. Heat to boiling. Cover and cook 5 minutes or until leeks are tender. Uncover and, if necessary, cook 2 minutes longer or until water evaporates. Center rings of leeks will rise; gently press back into place with back of teaspoon. Remove from heat and cool 10 minutes or until warm room temperature. 3. Top each cracker with 1 leek slice and 1 olive half. Serve immediately. Makes 30 bites, 2 bites per serving
3. Drain the pancakes on paper towels or brown paper and serve while still very hot. Makes 18 pancakes.

New DVD Releases for Week of April 18, 2011 PICKS OF THE WEEK
“The King’s Speech” (R) -- Colin Firth stars as Britain’s King George VI, who, following the death of his father (Michael Gambon) and the abdication of his brother Edward (Guy Pearce), is in a spot of bother. It appears our reluctant monarch has a bit of a stammering problem, old bean, and must overcome it. Enter Lionel Logue (Geoffrey Rush), an Australian self-taught speech
therapist, whose methods are, shall we say, unorthodox. Despite divisions of class, the two form a lifelong bond, and the King overcomes his impediment in the nick of time to give the most important speech of his life on the eve of World War II. I expected “The King’s Speech” to be another slow-paced costume drama, but was pleasantly surprised that it moved at a quick pace. The performances by the entire cast were brilliant, and there were more than a fair share of humorous moments. Highly recommended. Pip-pip and all that. “Ip Man 2: Legend of the Grandmaster” (R) -- Donnie Yen stars once again as Ip Man, the kung-fu legend who developed the Wing Chun style of martial arts and was mentor to Bruce Lee. This sequel continues the story of the grandmaster as he moves to Hong Kong to open a kung-fu school, but
faces opposition from Master Hung (Sammo Hung), the leader of a group of corrupt masters, leading to a fierce battle between Ip and a Western-style fighter named Twister. Although not as awesome as the first film, “Ip Man 2” is still a great martial-arts movie, especially if you love old-school, down-and-dirty fighting styles.
ic engineers. In order to solve the case and avenge her father’s death, Ruka must do battle with this mob of abominations.
“Tokyo Gore Police” Unrated Blu-Ray Edition -- Warning: Watching this movie will mess you up for life. It is one of the most gory, sick and twisted films to come out of Japan. So, hooray for it finally coming out in high-def. Set in the not-too-distant future, the film stars Eihi Shiina (“Audition”) as Ruka, the daughter of a high-ranking police officer. Her father is murdered by a gang of criminals who have been modified into super-creatures, their bodies mutilated and “bio-fused” with weaponry by psychopath-

LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A brand-new approach to a problem could have a good chance of succeeding if it’s based on a solid foundation of fact to strengthen its potential for standing up to scrutiny.
ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Whether a waiting period is taking longer than expected, or just seems that way, the anxious Lamb would do well to create a center of calm within her- or himself, and not do anything rash.
SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A favorable report should give your optimism an important boost as you confront another phase of a challenge. Don’t be timid about accepting advice from someone you trust.
TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Practical matters dominate the week, but cultural activities also are favored, especially those that can be shared with someone special in the Bovine’s life. Some important news might be forthcoming.
SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) You might want to target another goal if your current aim is continually being deflected. But stay with it until you find that first sign of an opening, and then follow through.
GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You need to know more about a possible career move in order to see if it offers a real opportunity or just a change. You’re sure to get lots of advice -- some of it good -- but the decision must be yours. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) The arrival of hoped-for good news about a loved one dominates most of the week and provides a great excuse for the party-loving Moon Child to plan a special event to celebrate. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Leos and Leonas rushing to finalize their plans might want to think about slowing down the pace, or risk overlooking an important consideration that could become a sore point down the line. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) The week’s challenges call for logical approaches. But sentiment also has its place. Sharing memories with a special someone, for example, strengthens the bond between you.
15
CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Although offers of advice might not always please the usually sure-footed Goat, good counsel is always worth considering, especially from those whose experience can be invaluable. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Don’t rush to make up for lost time. Your productivity can be measured not only by what you do, but how you do it. Move carefully until the job is done the way you like it. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Emerging facts about someone you know might cause you to rethink your relationship. But remember to make judgments in context of a full situation, not just on scraps of data. BORN THIS WEEK: You are known both for your love of acquiring beautiful things as well as for your generosity to others. (c) 2011 King Features Synd., Inc.

First, if you want to decrease your investment-related paperwork, you need to take advantage of all the paperless options that have probably been made available to you by those financial services companies with which you work. So, for example, you may want to choose to receive online statements, rather than paper ones. And when you make transactions, you may also be able to receive online confirmations.
Jill Gramlich (719) 460-1794 jglifeforce@aol.com
Not only will online documents help save paper, but it can also help protect you from identity theft. The more paper statements, confirmations and similar items lying around, the greater the possibility of their being exposed to prying eyes. (In fact, if you do still receive paper documents, you may want to shred them soon after you’ve reviewed the information.) If you think you may need to produce
this investment-related information, possibly to give to your tax advisor, you can always go back to your financial service provider’s web site, access the documents you need, and print them. Most companies make this information readily accessible to their clients for months, or even years, after it is initially generated. Now, let’s move to another environmentally conscious aspect of investing: consolidating your accounts. Start by listing all your financial assets, such as your bank accounts, investments, IRAs and employer-sponsored retirement plans, such as a 401(k), if you worked for a private employer, a 457(b), if you worked for a state or local government, or a 403(b), if you worked for a school or other tax-exempt organization. By consolidating as many of these accounts as possible with one financial services provider, you can significantly reduce the number of statements you receive and the paperwork you generate. But the reduction of paperwork is only one benefit you’ll receive from consolidating accounts. You might also be able to lower the amount of fees you pay. And even more importantly, by placing all your financial assets with one financial-services provider, you will be better able to follow a single, unified investment strategy. If you work with a financial advisor, he or she will find it much easier to identify your strengths and weaknesses and help you allocate your investment dollars in a way that’s appropriate for your retirement goals, risk tolerance and time horizon. Earth Day only happens once a year. So take this opportunity to think about how you can do your part, through a few simple actions tied to your investments, to help improve the environment we all share. This article was written by Edward Jones for use by your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor.

same with political groups and charities, unless they use a telemarketing service, and phone survey companies.
If you want to register or verify by phone, call 1-888-382-1222 from the phone you want covered.
Here are some steps to take: The magic words if a telemarketer calls: “Please take my number off your list. Don’t call again.” Then hang up. They have 31 days to get you off their list.
The Federal Trade Commission goes after companies that violate the DNC registry, but it can pursue only the ones it knows about. After 31 days of your number being in the registry, telemarketers cannot call you. If they do, complain to the FTC at the same number or on the website. Have all your information handy, such as time and date you were called, plus the name of the company if you have it.
If you haven’t signed up for the DNC registry, go online to www.donotcall.gov. Click Register Now. You can put in up to three phone numbers at a time and need to give your email address. You’ll later get a verification email. But sure to click the link in that email within 72 hours to verify that you want your phone covered. Don’t forget your cellphone. While there currently isn’t a cellphone book, if your number does get out, telemarketers are allowed to call you as long as they don’t use a “robot” to make the calls. If you’ve signed up and you continue to get calls, verify that your phone numbers are on the DNC list. Go to the same website and click Verify a Registration. Follow the steps, including replying to the confirmation email.

In the beginning, a DNC signup was only good for a few years. Since 2008, however, your signed-up phone number is permanently protected. If you live in a fast-growing region and your area code changes, you don’t need to sign up again. It’s done automatically. or those of you who have been wondering about the future of the historic yellow church on N. Jefferson Street, you can now breathe a sigh of relief. Reed and ShawNa Schotanus, who currently own Moxie, have purchased the building and some big plans are in the works. Slated to open in early June, the building will become home to The Vintage Merchants, and will include sixteen individually owned boutiques. Shop owners are all local residents and will showcase art, jewelry, clothing, accessories, and gifts. Many will feature local artist’s collections. The shops will be run in a co-op fashion by all of the shop owners, which we feel will promote exemplary customer service. Several shops have already been reserved, and we are getting really positive feedback about the concept.

Have you always wanted a shop of your own?
“This is not going to be your run of the mill, flea market type mall, but rather a collection of unique, upscale shops, all under one roof.” We want more of a Breckenridge or Vail feel to the marketplace. We are very committed to maintaining a high level of quality and style throughout. We have had an amazing first year at Moxie but are really excited about the move, and the opportunity to be the new caretakers of this historic jewel. We are also looking forward to being a part of Art Hop, and the many other events in Historic Downtown Monument. We hope that this will become a destination spot where folks can spend a couple of hours shopping and then walk to one of the nearby café’s for lunch. If you have previous experience as a shop owner, acclaimed artist, designer, or merchandiser, we would like to hear from you.
