t doesn’t take pretzel-like flexibility to become a yogi or yogini, the proper names for men and women, respectively, engaged in the practice of yoga. All it takes is a mat and a yoga instruction video to get started at home, or enrollment in a yoga class. And videos and classes are plentiful throughout the country because yoga has gained momentum since being introduced to the U.S. in the late 19th century. Blossoming in the 1960s; today, one in 10 Americans practices yoga.
YOGA AND ITS ROOTS Yoga began more than 5,000 years ago in India as more than an exercise. Yoga in India is a lifestyle. The word “yoga” comes from the word “yuj,” which is the ancient Sanskrit language of India. It translates to “union” or “joining together.” Indian yoga texts and sacred Hindu texts were all written in Sanskrit, and the yoga styles and postures

were named in the language. However, in the West, much of the Sanskrit names have been changed; for example, Vrikshasana is Tree Pose.
• Yoginis (women) comprise 72 percent of those who practice; almost 28 percent are yogis.
In simple terms, yoga is an exercise that involves moving the body into different positions, which are referred to as asanas, poses or postures. All of the postures incorporate stretching, balancing and breathing while standing, sitting or lying on the floor.
• The Yoga Business Academy predicts that yoga will become mainstream in the corporate world.
Yoga is not a religion, but there is a philosophy behind it. Yoga represents awareness and being in the moment. It embraces the gentle and accepting side of human nature. “Of the mind, body and spirit” is a phrase often intertwined with the practice of yoga. Besides building physical strength, flexibility and coordination; yoga has been known to improve focus, confidence, self-esteem and self-control and creativity. Some yoga enthusiasts say they’re more relaxed and they sleep better. Another thing pro-yoga is that it can be done anywhere, even at the work desk. Yoga is often recommended for those who sit at computers all day. Breaking for a few minutes to do some yoga is a great way to stretch the body after sitting in one spot for hours at a time.
• The YBA also states that companies will increase marketing efforts to associate their products with wellness lifestyles, and yoga “imagery” will be a smart way to do it. Some insurance companies are already paying for yoga, and many predict that doctors will be regularly prescribing yoga in the future.
• Kripalu yoga also is good for beginners. The basis of this type of yoga is about meditation, inner spirit, breathing and stretching, with some easier poses interspersed.
Those who practice yoga are often inclined toward nutritional programs and whole foods sources, gyms for alternate exercise programs, spas, etc. – all a boost to the health and wellness industry and the American economy.
• Kundalini yoga refers to the chakra energy. This type of yoga is especially good for the core area and the abs. There is rapid movement and lots of sitting positions.

Warrior is actually the name of a challenging yoga pose, but yoga offers something for everyone, from types of yoga to a variety of poses. Many postures are interactive with all yoga practices, and listed here are some basic descriptions of well-known types of yoga. • Hatha yoga is the most widely practiced form of yoga in the U.S. and the basis for other types. Hatha yoga is great for beginners because it’s about gentle, flowing movements and breathing techniques. It’s also a good way to mellow out from a long day at the office.

DAILY YOGA CLASSES TAUGHT BY EXPERIENCED TEACHERS
www.shelterinsurance.com/michaelahlers Yoga... Continued from Page 2 • Iyengar yoga uses many props in the practice, from blocks to harnesses to cushions. This type focuses on aligning the body. People who have chronic physical problems or need physical therapy could benefit from this methodical-based yoga. • Ashtanga yoga, or power yoga, is a great yoga for athletes or people who regularly exercise. Ashtanga is known for sculpting the body with a variety of fast-paced poses. The movements are quick and somewhat demanding. It’s not only good for defining muscles, but it also provides a cardio workout. • Bikram yoga has risen in popularity – for those who like it hot. Bikram yoga takes place in a room heated to 105 degrees (with no less than 40 percent humidity). The best advice with this type of yoga is to wear as little as possible. Bikram yoga began in Los Angeles in the 1970s under Bikram Choudhury. The classes generally run 90 minutes, with a series of 26 postures. The thinking behind the “heat” is that it facilitates deeper stretching and injury prevention; reduces stress and tension;

stimulates the muscles, organs and joints; improves circulation; and increases lung capacity. Because it induces profuse sweating, Bikram is detoxifying as well.

THE POWER OF OM Yoga to some might conjure up visions of people sitting with straight backs, eyes closed and the tips of their thumbs and forefingers pressed together, all the while chanting “om.” Yoga is about meditation, and aum (westerners spelled it “om”) is tied to yoga. However, it’s much more than hippie chatter.

In ancient India tradition, all sounds are derived from the sound of aum, which is considered the all-connecting sound of the universe. B.K.S. Iyengar, founder of Iyengar yoga, wrote in this book “Light on Yoga” that the letter “a” symbolizes the conscious state; the letter “u” is the dream state and “m” is the “dreamless sleep state of the mind and spirit.” The three letters together signify the “realization of man’s divinity within himself.”

Yoga... Continued from Page 3 Aum translates into the Tibetan sacred word of “hum,” the Moslems’ “amin” and the Christians’ “amen.” The use of the word “aum” is about a sense of “sacredness.” The correct pronunciation of “aum” rhymes with home, minus the “h.” Although Woodstock was about free love and rock n’ roll – not exactly sacred ground – the chant of “om” echoed throughout the hills as those attending made known their desires for world peace.

tretching is healthy. Anyone who has worked out regularly to stay in good, lifelong physical condition, knows the healing phenomenon of stretching. Why is stretching healthy? Contemporary research in physiology proves that stretching exercises create a unique effect of “muscle joy” and relaxation, impacting every part of the body. And because of the seamless connection between body and mind, stretching exercises effect body as well as mind, bringing deep emotional relief and balance between left and right brain hemispheres, stimulating production of endorphins, so-called “hormones of joy”. But not only stretching creates significant positive effects. According to research in psychology, ‘mindfulness’ meditation can also improve health. That’s why a variety of meditative techniques are now an integral part of different stress-reduction programs in medical clinics, hospitals, and health centers across the U.S. If stretching and meditation practiced separately are so healthy, probably their combination might have a more powerful effect. And that is true. All popular forms of Yoga recognized by the Western World in the past few decades present complete mind-body programs - a combination of
means “I bow to you.” Namaste is from India and revolves around the chakra (energy) of the heart. In India, the word Namaste doesn’t need to be spoken when greeting others – the gesture is understood. In the U.S., Namaste is often spoken or written without the gesture.
The gesture, however, is an acknowledgement of the soul of each person and implies a deep respect for another. Namaste is acted out by placing the hands together in a prayer form, closing the eyes and bowing the head.

Therefore everybody has an opportunity to benefit from their hard work, developing stronger and healthier bodies and more balanced minds and nervous systems. • We all know that the phrase “dog days of summer” refers to the most sultry days of the year, but have you ever wondered where the term came from? It seems that the ancient Romans believed that when Sirius, known as the dog star, shined the brightest -- which was during mid-summer -- it added its heat to the heat of the sun, making the hot season even more unbearable.
Do not allow your fears and doubts to conquer you before you even start to do something! Proceed with confidence that you can overcome everything ... and you will.

• It was evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins who made the following sage observation: “We are all atheists about most of the gods that societies have ever believed in. Some of us just go one god further.”
Although Yoga came to us from Hindu spiritual traditions, many Yoga Masters who established schools in the West adapted ancient Yoga for modern people from all walks of life and faiths, who want to learn to keep bodies in shape and minds at peace without delving into mysticism or the religious philosophy of Hinduism.
• It’s been reported that for one twoyear stretch, Elvis Presley ate nothing but meat loaf, mashed potatoes and tomatoes. • In parts of Asia, tradition holds that if you sneeze once, someone is saying something good about you; if you sneeze twice in a row, something bad is being said; if you sneeze three times, someone is in love with you; and if you sneeze more than three times, you’re about to catch a cold.
Thanks to this adaptation, many Christians could start practicing Yoga without changes to their core religion or conflicts with their life philosophy. New students are surprised to discover great benefits of Yoga: they have more energy and need less sleep, they feel less pain in sick body organs and more balance in their nervous system. Additionally they feel more comfortable with themselves, drawn to a simpler way of life with a natural sense of love and compassion to all of nature’s creations, gaining a clearer understanding of what it means to be spiritual in a deeply personal way. They also realize one day that practicing Yoga positions and meditations alone - without chanting, prayer or invocation - can not make a Christian any less Christian, but it can bring to a human soul more peace, calm focus, and grace to deal with everyday dramas of real life.
• If you’re like the average human, you have about 1,500 dreams every year.
• Libra is the only sign of the zodiac that is not an animal. • Even if you don’t remember it from its original air dates in the 1950s and ‘60s, you surely have heard of the iconic American situation comedy “Leave It to Beaver.” You might not realize, though, that the original working title was “Wally and the Beaver.” The producers thought that made it sound like a show about a boy and his pet, so they changed it. *** Thought for the Day: “A conservative is a man who believes that nothing should be done for the first time.” -- Alfred E. LIFE ENERGY FLOW TAI YI IS ADD/ADHD REAL?
I
s Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) real? Certainly, the symptoms are real. Some of the symptoms of ADD and ADHD are lack of focus, hyperactive, argumentative, low quality sleep, low quality school work, and sometimes showing difficulties in making friends. These symptoms can seem very real, but do they mean a child has ADD or ADHD? In the American society, people are programmed to see immediate results/ gratification. Americans, as a society, do not have an abundance of patience. Unfortunately, that means that when a child is somehow struggling, the answer many gravitate towards is medication. Many physicians and psychiatrists will ask a few questions about the symptoms and then prescribe a medication that supposedly alters the behavior. As a result, the child does not learn how to redirect his or her behavior; the child is medicated into submission. It is also important to know that many adolescents simply sell their medications rather than actually consume them. What does a child learn from taking medication as a result of behavior? He or she learns that when there is a difficulty, simply take medication. The child does not learn how to resolve the reason for the difficulty. So, whose fault is it? Is it the parents’ fault, the teacher’s fault, the physician’s or psy-

chiatrist’s fault? Is it the child’s fault? Certainly, a proactive parent will research causes behind ADD and ADHD symptoms. That parent would take that research to the teacher and medical personnel. The proactive parents would use knowledge and wisdom to determine the most beneficial course of action. Given that, what causes symptoms?

Refined sugar is toxic. Sugar will cause hyperactivity in addition to other health issues. How many processed foods have added (labeled and unlabeled) sugar? Unfortunately, most of the processed foods have added sugar. In addition, genetically modified foods (GM) are toxic as well. One can research this very easily. GM foods are not labeled, though some foods are labeled NON-GMO. However, the FDA is working at making it illegal to label foods NON-GMO. Apparently, it is too confusing to tell consumers if their food has not been genetically altered in any way. Research the foods children eat.

Shop Around Check consumer guides, insurance agents, companies and online insurance quote services. This will give you an idea of price ranges and tell you which companies have the lowest prices. But don't consider price alone. The insurer you select should offer a fair price and deliver the quality service you would expect if you needed assistance in filing a claim. So in assessing service quality, use the complaint information cited above and talk to a number of insurers to get a feeling for the type of service they give. Ask them what they would do to lower your costs. Check the financial stability of the companies you are considering with rating companies such as A.M. Best (www.ambest.com) and Standard & Poor's (www.standardandpoors.com) and consult consumer magazines. When you've narrowed it down to 3 insurers, get quotes.

Determining Insurability In order to obtain homeowner's insurance, your insurance agent needs the following information to quote you the best rate for your policy: - When was the home built? - How old is the plumbing and electrical? - What type of roof? - What's the square footage? - How many claims have been filed over the past 5 years? - Where is the home located? If the home is located in a rural area without a nearby fire department or has no fire hydrant on the street, some companies may refuse to insure it. In that case, you may have to inquire at a specialty/surplus-lines company.

Deductibles As with any type of insurance, you can save money by having a higher deductible on your policy. Typically, insurance companies will start giving discounts at a $500 deductible and increase the discount as your deductible increases. Nowadays, most insurance companies recommend a deductible of at least $500. If you can afford to raise your deductible to $1,000, you may save as much as 25 percent. Most companies offer deductibles up to $10,000. Be careful, because many mortgage companies will not allow you to exceed a $1,000 deductible, so check with your lender before opting for a higher deductible. How Much Insurance To Get? Don't confuse what you paid for your house with rebuilding costs. Insurance companies will use a cost estimator to figure cost replacement estimates. This will ensure that your home is insured for the correct amount. Insurance companies do not insure your land. If you buy a home that includes a large lot, do not be astonished when you receive an insurance policy for a lot less than what you paid for the home. This is because you are buying coverage for the home only. Replacement Cost Coverage is the percentage of additional coverage on top of the insured amount that protects a homeowner who has suffered a loss from having to pay additional construction costs to rebuild. It can cost more to build because of inflation or simply because material prices have increased. Some agents recommend 200% replacement cost coverage, which gives homeowners double the coverage. MOMENTS IN TIME THE HISTORY CHANNEL
• On April 25, 1719, Daniel Defoe’s fictional work “The Life and Strange Adventures of Robinson Crusoe” is published. The book, about a shipwrecked sailor who spends 28 years on a deserted island, is based on the experiences of Alexander Selkirk, a Scottish sailor who spent four years on a small island off the coast of South America in the early 1700s. • On April 29, 1854, the Ashmun Institute, the first college founded solely for black students, is officially chartered in southeastern Pennsylvania. Renamed Lincoln University after the Civil War, its graduates include poet Langston Hughes and Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall. • On April 27, 1865, an explosion on a Mississippi River steamboat kills an estimated 1,547 people, mostly Union soldiers returning home after the Civil War. The Sultana was built to hold 376 passengers, but reports say that there were as many as 2,700 people on board. • On May 1, 1931, New York City’s Em-
pire State Building is dedicated. The idea for the Empire State Building is said to have been born of a competition between Walter Chrysler of the Chrysler Corp. and John Jakob Raskob of General Motors to see who could erect the taller building. • On April 30, 1948, the Land Rover, a British-made all-terrain vehicle, debuts at an auto show in Amsterdam. The Land Rover had a boxy, utilitarian design, fourwheel drive and a canvas roof. Seat cushions, doors, a heater and spare tire were considered extras. • On April 28, 1965, Barbra Streisand’s debut television special, “My Name is Barbra,” is aired. One sequence was shot on location in the fur department of Bergdorf Goodman, where Streisand vamped in exotic fur coats to a medley of poverty songs, including “Brother Can You Spare a Dime.” • On April 26, 1986, the world’s worst nuclear accident to date occurs at the Chernobyl nuclear plant near Kiev in Ukraine. An estimated 4,000 clean-up workers died from radiation poisoning, as many as 70,000 people suffered severe poisoning and a large area of land might not be livable for as many as 150 years. Just before a patent expires, drug companies will renew their efforts to get doctors to prescribe their product. When your doctor prescribes something for you, ask if it’s one of the drugs that has come off patent, in which case an inexpensive generic
This can be very important for seniors who are approaching the doughnut hole, where Medicare won’t pay for coverage. Keep in mind that some of these companies are going to court and will be tied up in litigation. Still, from now on, when you get a prescription filled, ask the pharmacist if there is a less-expensive generic to be had. Another trick to keep patients on the brand-name drug is that the cost of the generic version sometimes can go up for a little while. Beware, and ask questions. A good way to keep track of the expiration of patents on drugs you take is to go online and do a search for the name of your drug and the words “patent expire. Matilda Charles regrets that she cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into her column whenever possible. Specialized Adult and Pediatric tidepressants, are oral medicines that can dull postherpetic pain. Opioids like tramadol and oxycodone can be turned to when others fail. And this is just an abbreviated inventory of treatments.
SHINGLES RASH GONE, BUT PAIN LINGERS ON DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I’ve been trying to deal with shingles pain for six months. At times it’s so bad that I can’t sleep. I have tried Tylenol, Aleve and Advil, and some herbals that my wife bought. Nothing works. Can you tell me what will? How did I get it? Will the shingles vaccine take away the pain? -- R.M. ANSWER: Shingles comes from the awakened chickenpox virus that has been hibernating in nerve cells ever since the childhood infection. Even if you can’t remember having had chickenpox, odds are you did. More than 90 percent of adults -- in fact, close to 99 percent -- have evidence of a prior chickenpox infection in their blood. Once the shingles rash goes, pain continues to remain in a significant number of people. That’s not shingles. It’s called postherpetic neuralgia. When the chickenpox virus crept down nerves to your skin, it injured the nerves. That’s what causes lingering pain long after the shingles rash has disappeared. Plenty of medicines can quiet that pain. You have to experiment to find which works for you. Lyrica is a somewhat newer addition to these medicines. You need a prescription for it. Capsaicin cream, gel or lotion is found on the shelves of all drugstores. You apply it directly to the painful skin. Qutenza is a new preparation of capsaicin. It’s applied by your doctor or a health professional in a one-hour treatment, and is touted to provide three months of pain relief. The lidocaine patch is another skinapplied treatment that quiets pain. Amitriptyline and Cymbalta, both an-

The shingles vaccine doesn’t do a thing for postherpetic neuralgia; it cuts the chances of developing shingles in half. And if a vaccinated person does develop shingles, it lessens the chances of postherpetic neuralgia. It’s recommended for everyone 60 and older.

DONOHUE: Will you discuss the eating of canned tuna? I enjoy a tuna-salad sandwich once in a while. But I read that the mercury in tuna is harmful, especially to expectant mothers and small children, and to adults in general. I also read that light tuna is less toxic than white albacore tuna. Will you clarify this? -- D.R. ANSWER: Shark, swordfish, king

mackerel and tilefish are the fish with the highest mercury concentrations. Seafood that is low in mercury and quite safe includes shrimp, canned light tuna, salmon and catfish. Albacore (white) tuna has more mercury than canned light tuna, but it’s OK to eat 6 ounces of it once a week. Eating a tuna-salad sandwich, whichever the source of tuna, once in a while (once a week) isn’t going to cause any
health problems. ***

New DVD Releases for Week of April 25, 2011 PICKS OF THE WEEK
There are no major movie releases this week, but we do have one impressive remake of a classic series and several re-releases of modern-day classic films. So let’s get started: “Upstairs Downstairs” (Unrated) -- For four seasons between 1971 and 1974, PBS viewers were enthralled by “Upstairs Downstairs,” the period drama of manners that has been voted by many as one of the most beloved drama series of the past 50 years. Now, 40 years later, it returns in this lavishly pro-
duced remake starring Ed Stoppard and Keeley Hawes (“Ashes to Ashes”) as Lord Hallam as his wife Lady Agnes, and Jean Marsh as Rose Buck, the housekeeper charged with finding the staff needed to help run the elegant lifestyle of the upstairs world. The year is 1936 and the world is changing. As Lord Hallam and Lady Agnes move into Beaton Place, fascism is on the rise in Europe, and the British monarchy is facing an abdication crisis. A new staff must be found to help the couple modernize their lavish home and also care for the family, including the Lord’s widowed mother and her pet monkey, and his wayward sister, who has fallen under the spell of a member of the British Union of Fascists -- an affair that soon will bring her and the family into physical and political peril. “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas: The Criterion Collection” (R) -- Johnny Depp stars as Raoul Duke, the gonzo alter-ego of journalist Hunter S. Thompson, in this Terry Gil-
liam-directed, drug-fueled epic journey into the savage heart of the American Dream. As with all Criterion releases, “Fear and Loathing” is stuffed to the gills with outstanding special features, pristine picture and sound, and three separate commentary tracks -- including one from Thompson himself. “Sin City” (Two-Disc Theatrical & Recut, Extended and Unrated Versions) (R) -- “Sin City” is not only the best movie director Robert Rodriguez has ever made, it unquestionably the best comic-book movie ever. Based on the series by Frank Miller (who shares directing credit), “Sin City” is raw, violent, gritty, sexy and 100-percent pure, trashy pulp fiction. “Bob Dylan: Don’t Look Back” (PG) -- In 1965, documentary filmmaker D.A. Pennebaker followed Bob Dylan for three weeks during his concert tour of England. The result is an intimate look at the artist as a young man, and a film that served as a template for all other music documentaries that followed.

TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Bovines tend to excel at solving problems, not creating them. But you risk doing just that if you’re slow to respond to a timely situation. If necessary, seek advice from someone you trust. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) The Gemini Twin might need to do more than a routine check of both a job-linked and home-based situation. Dig deeper for more data on both fronts to avoid unwanted surprises later. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Moon Children facing an important workplace decision are encouraged to use their perceptiveness to see through any attempt to win them over with a supercharge of fawning and flattery. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Good news catapults Leos and Leonas into reconsidering a deferred decision. But time has moved on, and it’s a good idea to recheck your plans and make adjustments where necessary. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) The week favors relationships, both personal and professional. Take the time to look for and immediately repair any vulnerable areas caused by unresolved misunderstandings.

SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) The temptation to take an extreme position on an issue is strong, but moderation is favored both in personal and professional dealings. Move toward finding areas of agreement. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Getting another boss or teacher? Try to see the person behind the image. It will help you adjust more easily to the changes that new authority figures inevitably bring. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Much as you might dislike the idea, keep an open mind about using the assistance of a third party to help resolve problems that threaten to unravel an important agreement. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Music helps restore the Aquarian’s spiritual energies this week. Take someone you care for to a concert of your musical choice. Also, expect news about a workplace matter. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A challenge that seems easy enough at first could take an unexpected turn that might test your resolve. Decide if you feel you should stay with it, or if it’s better to move in another direction. BORN THIS WEEK: You can be strong when standing up for justice, both for yourself and for others. R
omeo and Juliet is an all-time classic. It’s known as one of the great romances of all time. But it’s perhaps better known as a tragedy. And why is that? Is it because it’s a tale of greed, hate, and lust between two families? Is it because there is deception and betrayal? You’re probably thinking the reason is more likely because of the ending. You know, where two lovers take their own lives in a swirling twist of regrettable fates. But I disagree. The most tragic and disturbing thing about Shakespeare’s timeless classic is that Juliet, the Capulet-lover, is just Thirteen years of age… Luckily, you need not worry about prepubescent lovers or romance gone wrong at Pinz Bowling Center this summer. Because Friday nights (the greatest of all nights to be single) Pinz presents the “Singles Only” league. Beginning April 29th, at 6:30pm, you and a friend can join a bowling league of sultry singles who like to mingle. Bring your best friend, not your girlfriend! Teams may be mixed. As an added bonus, for bowlers who want to come enjoy the single life at Pinz more often, all league bowlers are given onedollar bowling every day. They also receive discounts on food, and can enjoy nights at Rodz Bar & Grill (located at Pinz). So don’t be left drinking cold, ill-flavored, poison on a humid night. Forget the past, and those silly Capulet’s! Moving on is good for the heart; as in the organ that literally is responsible for pumping blood through your veins. Is that really a body part you’re willing to risk complications with? No, and there’s only one way to please your heart – the “Singles Only” league at Pinz! (or any of our other summer leagues…) For more information on how star-crossed singles can enjoy themselves at Pinz on Friday nights this summer, direct a call to (719) 487-7469. A
pril 18 was the deadline for ďŹ ling your individual tax return. But that wasn’t the only event that occurred this tax season. Although you might not have been aware of it, Tax Freedom Day fell on April 12.
If you’d like to experience exceptional personal service, consider Edward Jones. We offer solutions for all your financial needs. Get to know us.
Tax Freedom Day, calculated annually by the Tax Foundation, is the day on which Americans have earned enough money to pay this year’s federal, state and local taxes. Of course, Tax Freedom Day is something of a fiction, because most people pay their taxes throughout the year, via their paychecks. Furthermore, when you pay taxes, you help fund public education, the police, the fire department, highways, college scholarships and many other important elements of society. Nonetheless, you may want to use the concept of Tax Freedom Day to look for ways to reduce the taxes associated with your investments.

Here are a few suggestions:
Retire Richer www.RetireRicher.org
Jill Gramlich (719) 460-1794 jglifeforce@aol.com
Fully fund your IRA. For 2011, you generally can contribute up to $5,000 to a traditional or Roth IRA, or $6,000 if you’re 50 or older. When you invest in a traditional IRA, your contributions may be tax deductible, depending on your income level, and your earnings can grow on a tax-deferred basis. With a Roth IRA, your contributions are not deductible, but your earnings can grow tax free, provided you’ve had your account at least five years and you don’t start taking withdrawals until you’re 59-1/2. Increase your 401(k) contributions. When you contribute to a 401(k), you can receive two main types of tax benefits. First, you typically put in pre-tax dollars to your 401(k), so the more you contribute, the lower your taxable
income. And second, your earnings can grow on a tax-deferred basis. For 2011, you generally can contribute up to $16,500 to your 401(k), or $22,000 if you’re 50 or over. (The same contribution limits apply to 457(b) plans, for state or local government employees, or 403(b) plans, for employees of schools or other tax-exempt organizations.) So, whenever your salary goes up, you many want to consider boosting your contributions to your 401(k) or other employer-sponsored retirement plan. Invest in a 529 plan. If you have children or grandchildren whom you’d like to help through college, you may want to invest in a 529 plan. Your earnings grow tax-free, provided they are used for qualified higher education expenses, and your contributions may be deductible from your state taxes, depending on your state of residence and the plan in which you choose to participate. Be a “buy-and-holdâ€? investor. By holding investments at least one year before selling them, gains on your investment will generally be taxed at a rate of 15 percent. If you sell an appreciated investment you’ve held less than one year, the tax rate will be the same as your individual tax rate, which could be as high as 35 percent. Look for dividends. You can potentially increase your cash flow by purchasing investments that pay dividends. For 2011 and 2012, individual investors also benefit from a maximum tax rate of 15 percent on qualiďŹ ed dividends. If you don’t need the extra cash, you can reinvest the dividends and increase your ownership shares — which is a key to building wealth. (Keep in mind, though, that companies can decrease or eliminate dividends at any time.) As mentioned above, Tax Freedom Day is more of an idea than a reality. But by following these tax-smart investment tips, you can potentially gain some benefits for years to come. hether you are currently a business owner, looking to exit your business while reaping some financial return on your years of investment, or an individual contemplating purchasing an existing business rather than facing the greater uncertainties of a start-up, the issue of how to structure the sale or purchase of a business from a legal point of view may be more significant than you think. Essentially, you need to decide whether to structure the transaction as an asset purchase or, if the business is operated through some type of limited liability entity, as a “stock” purchase. (For purposes of this discussion, “stock” purchase shall also include the purchase of any type of ownership interest in a limited liability entity.) An asset purchase is one in which the buyer purchases from the seller substantially all of the assets used in the operation of the business. This may include the name of the business as well as other intangible assets. A “stock” purchase is one in which the buyer purchases from the seller some or all of the ownership interests in the en-

mailbox can be a source of scams and identity theft. Thieves are targeting mailboxes at night and in rural areas, looking for pre-approved credit-card applications (they just change the address on it when they send it in), bank statements, credit-card statements and anything else that will help them re-create your identity.

If your mailbox is out of sight of your house, consider either getting a box at the Post Office or a mail store (which necessitates frequent trips to get the mail), or installing one of those locking mailboxes. For around $100 you can get a steel curbside box with a key. Be sure that whatever you get is USPS approved. Read online reviews before you buy, because some of the boxes are described as flimsy by those who’ve bought them, and some don’t come with the mounting hardware. If you buy and sell at online auctions, beware the PayPal scams. The goal of the scam email is to get you to reveal your password and ID name either by asking for it outright or by giving you a link that will “fix” a problem with your account. Don’t do it. your personal banking information and putting your auction funds at risk. Close the email, and if you truly suspect a problem with your PayPal account, and use your regular way to get to the site. Finally, if you or your children swap USB flash drives with someone else as a means of sharing files, your computer could be in danger. Many computers are set to autorun if these small devices are plugged in, meaning that the files start up immediately. Whether it’s intentional or not, your computer could get a virus from those USB drives, especially if the drive is plugged in when you boot up and your virus program hasn’t had a chance to start. If you’re skilled with your computer, consider disabling that autorun feature.
