“The Wizard of Oz” is a timeless movie; it’s hard to forget the ominous scene where a tornado whips through Kansas and hurls Dorothy and Toto into the sky, whisking them off to the Land of Oz.

Residents of Joplin, Mo., witnessed Mother Nature’s devastation first-hand when an F3 tornado ripped through their city in May, killing at least 142 people and injuring more than 900. form when the updraft is rotating and fueled by warm, moist air. The intensity of tornadoes is measured by the F scale (named for Ted Fujita, former professor at the University of Chicago,) based on the amount of damage the tornado does to the affected area. The higher up on the scale the worse the tornado. An F5 tornado has wind speeds between 261 and 318 mph and just

Tornadoes are born from thunderstorms and categorized into two types: “supercell” or “non-supercell.” Supercell tornadoes are the most common and long-lived (more than one hour) and begin as a highly organized storm that gains momentum from an updraft or a rise in the current of air. The tilted and rotating updraft can be as large as 10 miles in diameter and up to 50,000 feet tall, usually whirling around about 20 to 60 minutes before the actual tornado forms. Most of the violent tornadoes come from supercell thunderstorms.

TORNADO ALLEY The flat lands of the Great Plains are ripe for tornado activity, as cold air from Canada meets warm air from the Gulf of Mexico. When the two air masses join, a significant number of tornadoes develop along what is known as the “dryline” – a boundary that divides hot, dry air to the west from warm, moist air to the east. The strongest and most violent tornadoes most consistently occur in South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Twister Season... Continued on Page 3

Non-supercell tornadoes form without the rotating updraft. A commonly known non-supercell tornado is the landspout, which is a narrow, “rope-like” condensation funnel that forms as the thunderstorm clouds build. Because there is no updraft, the spinning motion begins near the ground. Waterspouts are the same, but they occur over water. Most of the non-supercell tornadoes are F2 or less.

Oklahoma, northern Texas and eastern Colorado – known as Tornado Alley. In comparison to other states, Colorado ranks No. 9 for frequency of tornadoes; and No. 38, 31 and 30 for the number of deaths, injuries and damage costs, respectively. The latest state-by-state comparison is from 1950 to 1995. Each year from 1999 to 2009, Colorado experienced an average of 60 tornadoes that touched land.

MYTHS • Tornadoes never strike twice. In Guy, Ark., three tornadoes hit the same church the same day. Tornadoes hit Cordell, Kan., on the same day – May 20 – three years in a row in the early 1900s. • Areas near rivers, lakes and mountains are safe from tornadoes. No place is safe. In the late 1980s, a tornado swept through Yellowstone National Park and left a path of destruction all alongside a 10,000 ft. mountain. • Low pressure from the tornado causes damage to buildings. Most of the structural damage to buildings is caused by dangerous winds and flying debris. • To equalize pressure, open windows before a tornado hits. Open windows invite the ferocious winds. Leave windows closed and head to a safe place in the house.

• Seek shelter in the southwest corner of the house. This is a misconception started by a false fact that all tornadoes propagate in a northeast direction. Tornadoes move from every direction. Seeking shelter in a basement under an I-beam or heavy work bench or even a staircase is the best way to avoid injury.

• A typical tornado lasts for only a few minutes. • The most powerful tornadoes occur in the U.S. • A tornado most often occurs between 3 and 9 p.m. • In Oklahoma, a tornado swept up a small herd of cattle and carried them across the countryside. • Dust devils are strong tornadoes that pass over desert areas. • Big cities like Brooklyn, N.Y., Nashville, Tenn., and St Louis have incurred the wrath of tornadoes. • A strong tornado can pick up a house and move it down the block, and sometimes the tornado skips a beat, leveling one house and leaving the one next door completely intact. • People have found knives and forks embedded in tree trunks as a result of a tornado. • A tornado in Oklahoma destroyed an entire motel, and the motel sign was later found in Arkansas. • In 1928, a Kansas tornado plucked the feathers off some chickens. • The chance of an F5 tornado – the highest classification – is less than 0.1 percent.

STORM CHASERS In the 1996 movie, “Twister,” actors Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton played a husband and wife storm-chasing team. True-to-life storm chasers lauded the visual effects of the movie but criticized the script. At the time, meteorologists Richard and Daphne Thompson of the NOAA were real storm chasers and between the two of them had chased more than 70 tornadoes. Although they were adamant that no storm chaser would ever get as close to the tornado as Hunt and Paxton, today’s dare devils often defy the odds.

• When a baby is born it has more than 300 bones in its body, but due to bone fusion, adults end up with only 206 bones.

Watch the Discovery Channel as storm chasers drive directly into the funnel. Their only safety net is the cramped space underneath the car seats. They’re risking plenty. Scientists and meteorologist can only provide tornado warnings and watches but are unable to predict the strength of a tornado – until the damage is done. For sanity and safety sake, it’s best to move away from the storm instead of toward it.

TORNADO WARNING A tornado watch is a notification that conditions are prime for a tornado. A warning means one has been spotted. So, when the T.V. weather person is issuing a warning, heed the following: • Move to a pre-designated shelter – a basement or an interior room on the lowest level of the house. • Stay away from windows.

TAI YI:

HOW DOES ONE HOPE FOR PAIN?

I

n our society and in many other societies, people are programmed for punishment. A person who grows up in an environment that pro-punishment will, ultimately, grow into an adult who believes in punishment. The type of punishment delivery simply changes from childhood into adulthood. Punishment is delivering consequences with judgment. If a child performs an action that is out of alignment with the family traditions or belief system, and the family believes in punishment, then a consequence is delivered with judgment. “You were bad or wrong for that behavior and (fill in the blank) is the punishment.” This type of response is different from a simple consequence that may be delivered. A consequence may be delivered with an attempt at understanding why the behavior occurred and a discussion with the child about the behavior. Perhaps time to think or some extra chores is also delivered, but without judgment and anger. When punishment is the norm within a family unit, the child will grow into an adult who continues the punishment cycle. This can occur in various ways. The adult can

use self-judgment, self-denial, selfanger, and self-sabotage as a form of punishment. If that adult makes a mistake, perhaps he or she will spend the entire night berating him or herself for the mistake instead of just letting it go. Perhaps he or she will self-judge for not looking a certain way. Perhaps the adult will deny small pleasures because other things are more important. Punishment can occur in several different ways. Punishment energy will also lead to “I do not deserve…” This false belief will lead to self-sabotage.

Self-sabotage occurs when a person carries a false belief that he or she does not deserve pure joy. A person will carry that belief because punishment was delivered as a child. That punishment could have come from a teacher, parent, or other adult. The sabotage will manifest itself in the form of the person making movement or headway and then everything falls apart. Maybe the person made a choice that was conscious or unconscious, but it was a choice made from the point of self-sabotage. This person carries an unconscious desire for pain to prove to him or herself that she or he does not deserve joy.

The Tai Yi treatment that can assist with this is called Hope of Pain. Hope of Pain is for people who have a subconscious mind that focuses on the hope of pain. The treatment will work with self-sabotage issues and the unconscious. The practitioner can assist the person in understanding why the self-sabotage and hope for pain is present.

Houselogic.com shows us these other tips for saving water : 6. Put thirsty plants together To save water, group plants into watering zones. Place the thirstiest plants near the house where they can drink roof runoff. Farther out, make a "transition zone" for plants that need supplemental drip irrigation. Farther still is a "natural zone" for native plants that can survive on rainfall alone.

7. Plant and water when it's cool New plants and transplants need far less water if you put them in the ground in early fall or early spring when it's cooler. By summer, they'll have established a deep, healthy root system that needs less watering. Water in the cool of the morning, when you'll lose less water to evaporation than in the heat of the day. Resist watering at dusk; wet foliage during the night encourages fungus and mildew growth.

8. Do donuts Trees and shrubs need extra water during their first couple of years to help roots take hold. An efficient way to keep roots moist is to mound several inches of soil into a donut-shaped berm. Make the berm the width of the treeincluding branches. Use a hose or bucket to fill the donut dam to the top. Water will absorb slowly instead of running off. Another option: Attach a $25 to $30 drip irrigator bag to the tree. It looks like a plastic flotation tube and releases water slowly over several hours. 9. Follow the sun Before you plant, get to know how-and how long-the sun bathes your garden. Determine patterns of shade and sun. Use dry-soil plants in sunny areas, and use plants that require more water in shady areas where evaporation is slower. 10. Create the illusion of water A good way to conserve water in the garden is to capture rain water from your roof in a rain barrel. During a moderate rainfall, a 25-by-40-foot roof can shed 600 gallons per hour. All you'll need is a capture system (roof gutters and downspouts), a storage system (large-capacity barrels) and delivery system (garden hose). Also, use rainwater to fill water features, which calm your nerves and attract birds and butterflies. Use a recirculation pump to keep the water flowing; replace evaporation with your rain barrel supply.

Buck wrote 80 novels and books. • On June 25, 1915, the German press publishes an official statement from the country’s war command addressing the German use of poison gas at the start of the Second Battle of Ypres two months earlier. The Germans had fired more than 150 tons of lethal chlorine gas against two French colonial divisions in April, claiming the French had first used gas in August 1914. • On June 23, 1927, The Sioux County Pioneer newspaper of North Dakota reports that President Calvin Coolidge will be “adopted” into a Sioux tribe at Fort Yates on the border of North Dakota. At the Sioux ceremony, photographers captured Coolidge, in suit and tie, as he was given a grand ceremonial feathered headdress.

• On June 22, 1944, President Franklin Roosevelt’s administration creates the Servicemen’s Readjustment Act of 1944, better known as the G.I. Bill. The bill gave returning servicemen access to unemployment compensation, low-interest home and business loans, and -- most importantly -funding for education.

Kennedy went on to become the 35th president and Jackie became one of the most popular first ladies ever to grace the White House. • On June 21, 1964, Michael Schwerner, Andrew Goodman and James Chaney are killed by a Ku Klux Klan lynch mob near Meridian, Miss. The three young civilrights workers were helping to register black voters in Mississippi, thus inspiring the ire of the local Klan. • On June 20, 1975, director Steven Spielberg’s thriller “Jaws” debuts in theaters. A $700,000 marketing campaign preceded the film’s release, helping it to earn some $7 million in its opening weekend alone. The mechanical shark’s name was “Bruce.”

The email listed all types of services it provides to help get benefits after someone has been turned down. But if you’re expecting personal service, it’s not likely to happen, and if you want your money back when it doesn’t do what it says it will, you’ll be out of luck. See, this company wasn’t even in the United States. Instead of having a .com at the end of the Internet address, it was a .co -- which means Columbia. NEW DAWN BREAKS FOR RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS DEAR DR. DONOHUE: My daughter, 37, has rheumatoid arthritis. Is it genetic or a diet/lifestyle illness? What can be done to alleviate her discomfort? I read somewhere that cod liver oil brings relief. -- H.B. ANSWER: Arthritis comes in many guises. Osteoarthritis is the most common kind. Nearly everyone has a touch of it before death. Rheumatoid arthritis affects about 1 percent of adults, with two women afflicted for every man. It makes its appearance most often in the 40s and 50s. The lower two knuckles of the fingers, the wrist, elbows, ankles and foot joints are the ones most often attacked, but any joint can be affected, including the shoulders and hips. It’s a symmetrical arthritis, meaning that the same joint on the right is stricken as the one on the left. It’s also a systemic illness. The body as a whole suffers. Fever, weight loss and fatigue are common in many stages of this illness. The eyes can become inflamed, as can blood vessels. Changes in the lungs are possible. It’s not a diet/lifestyle illness. Genes play a role, but not the entire role. The immune system is involved. Cod liver oil is no longer used for treatment. A new dawn has broken for the treatment of this often-disabling affliction. Formerly, anti-inflammatory drugs like Motrin and aspirin were the initial treatment. Now treatment most often begins with drugs called disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs, DMARD. These medicines have the potential to stop the

progression of the illness. Methotrexate is one example. A brand-new class of rheumatoid arthritis drugs, the biologicals, neutralizes body chemicals that lead to joint inflammation and deformity. They can halt the arthritis process in its tracks -- not always, but enough of the time to call them amazing. Some names are Humira, Kineret, Actemra, Enbrel and Remicade. They also have powerful side effects that have to be quickly attended to. Your daughter lives at a time that is a good one for people with this illness. The booklet on arthritis describes the various kinds and their treatments. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 301W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I am a 76year-old man with COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease -- emphysema and chronic bronchitis). I am relatively symptom-free and have reduced the use of my inhaler to one puff in the morning and in the evening. I jog and walk two miles, three times a week, in 25 minutes and have done so for the past four years. Am I putting undue stress on my heart? Am I hurting or helping myself? -- R.S. ANSWER: You’ve stuck with this program for four years and are now using less medicine than you did. It appears to help you. Your regimen isn’t a dangerous one. However, I have to stop short of giving you carte blanche approval. Only your doctor can do so. He or she knows all aspects of your medical history; I don’t. I’m pretty sure you’ll get the doctor’s OK.

*** Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.

What followed was unpredictable. It immediately became the staple color of females everywhere. For young girls growing up, it inspired them to become more than what they were (like princesses). Then the color evolved being worn by men (who would later shrug it off saying, “it was the 80’s!”). Then Pink really hit it big, crossing the gender gate when “Real Men Wear Pink” was born on T-shirts all across America. And now, Pink embarks on its next big endeavor…

n the beginning there was blue. Then Yellow. After that not a lot. In fact, the world consisted largely of blue and yellow for a long time. Sure there were the occasional shades of grey, but in general, not a lot of color. But then it arrived, like a fashionable meteor of inevitability. There was a new color that stood out like a hot pillow in an Ice Capades affair; the color Pink.

A GIFT OF HEALTH FOR FATHER’S DAY

T

hough Father’s Day has passed, it’s never too late to give Dad the gift of a long, healthy life. In honor of Father’s Day, here are some of the most important foods for protecting men’s health.

TOMATOES

Tomatoes contain a variety of compounds that offer protection against prostate cancer -- the No. 2 cause of cancer deaths in men, after lung cancer. The powerful antioxidant, lycopene, has received the most media attention. But researchers at the University of Illinois say that tomatoes’ health benefits are the result of more than a single compound, proving once again that it’s often better to get nutrients as part of a complex mix in foods, rather than as single, isolated compounds in pill form. Researchers at Harvard University found that men who eat at least 10 servings a week of tomato-based foods sharply reduce their risk of prostate cancer. Lycopene is most easily absorbed from cooked tomato products, so enjoy ample servings of tomato juice, sauce, ketchup and salsa.

Tuesday - Friday 5 - 9 pm Saturday 11:30 am - 9 pm

SOY

4 Hwy. 105 • Palmer Lake

Soy has heart- and prostate-protecting effects. About 25 grams of soy protein a day can lower cholesterol levels by up to 6 percent. Soy also may help keep blood vessels more flexible. Mark Messina, a soy expert at Loma Linda University in California, believes in soy’s ability to help in the fight against prostate cancer. Messina explains that in Asian countries, men traditionally eat a diet rich in soy, and their incidence of prostate cancer is significantly less than American men. Tofu isn’t the only source of soy. In fact, soy nuts are one of the tastiest and easiest ways to get beneficial soy compounds into your diet. Soy nuts are available in most grocery stores, and you can buy them roasted, salted and flavored. Just one-fourth of a cup delivers 12 grams of heart-protecting soy protein, as well as a variety of compounds called “isoflavones,” which appear to deliver prostate protection. Your best bet is to eat soy foods, rather than take concentrated supplements.

NUTS

Nuts are high in fat and calories, but they also deliver a powerful dose of prevention against heart disease -- the No. 1 killer of American men. The naturally occurring fat in nuts is mostly unsaturated. Plus, nuts are rich in fiber, protein, vitamin E and an assortment of trace minerals such as copper, zinc, magnesium and selenium.

(719) 487-0471 SUMMER HOURS:

Men with high blood pressure are at greater risk for stroke and heart disease. Weight loss, physical activity and a low-sodium or salt-restricted diet is most commonly prescribed. However, new research shows that diets rich in fruits, vegetables and lowfat dairy products give additional benefit. Low-fat milk products fortified with vitamin D are best because vitamin D also may help protect against prostate cancer. Our best sources of vitamin D are sunlight, fatty fish and fortified milk. Although questions have been raised about dairy products and risk for prostate cancer, the American Institute for Cancer Research believes that at this point, “We can neither prove nor dismiss the possible link between milk and prostate cancer. More research needs to be done before any changes are made to dietary recommendations for dairy products.” Fat and total calorie intake also affect prostate cancer risk. Because of milk’s excellent nutrient content and known health benefits, the cancer institute advises men to include small amounts of dairy foods in the diet, but not to go over 2,000 mg of calcium per day.

FISH

Certain varieties of fish, including salmon, tuna, mackerel and sardines, are rich in “omega-3 fatty acids.” This particular kind of fat offers protection against death from

13

heart attack. There also is evidence that these fatty acids could help reduce the risk of prostate cancer. Try to eat two fish meals per week.

VEGETABLES

Men who eat lots of vegetables, especially those in the cruciferous family --broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage and kale -- have significantly lower rates of prostate cancer. Vegetables and other plant-based foods including whole grains and beans or legumes also offer protection against heart disease and colon cancer. Eat a variety of vegetables to ensure the best range of protective components, including powerful antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and fiber. Remember, food is just one component of a healthy lifestyle. Physical activity also is key in preventing a wide range of illnesses. Be aware of your family’s history of specific diseases, and schedule regular check-ups and health screenings accordingly. Let your kids catch you setting a good example. Children need their fathers, so celebrate your health and take care of your body. New DVD Releases for Week of June 20, 2011 PICKS OF THE WEEK

“Cedar Rapids” (R) -- This adult comedy takes the more heartfelt approach to its sometimes raunchy material. Small-town insurance salesman Tim Lippe (Ed Helms) is called up to the big leagues in the most important moment of his life so far -- an insurance convention in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The real action, however, focuses on the 20years-too-late coming-of-age story of a timid manchild.

Helms delivers a good performance as the excitable but clueless insurance salesman. You may recognize him from “The Hangover” or even “The Office,” in which he plays an excitable but clueless paper salesman. Be careful not to let Helms’ dopey likability deceive you, “Cedar Rapids” is a movie bent on taking boyish innocence into seedy territory. With a solid supporting role held up by John C. Reilley, “Cedar Rapids” squeezes laughs out of awkward moments and the antics of the intoxicated. But not everyone will be on board with this brand of comedy. The movie doesn’t make a clear distinction between when to feel sad and when to point and laugh, and the two often overlap. Many of the biggest laughs come right as the audience is most weirded out -- but such is the realm of John C. Reilley. “The Adjustment Bureau” (PG-13) -- This is the movie that dares to ask: Can the power

of love defeat mystery men who control the world? If that doesn’t sound like a real question to you, then you could be bored by “The Adjustment Bureau.” David (Matt Damon) and Elise (Emily Blunt) fall immediately in love, only to find that a shadowy organization has other plans for them. This is another adaptation of a work by science-fiction author Phillip K. Dick. Like many of its siblings, “The Adjustment Bureau” struggles to give a straight-faced explanation of its sci-fi elements, and it all comes off as a bit silly. Dick’s stories often question the nature of truth and reality, but this movie is mostly about two attractive people -- with great chemistry -- who are determined to be together, no matter what wonky premise tries to pull them apart. “Kiss Me Deadly” (1955) (NR) -- This fine specimen of film noir gets a Criterion Collection release worth noting. Before the

14

hard-boiled detective movie could become a parody of itself, “Kiss Me Deadly” set a standard with the fastest-pace, seediest joints, sleaziest characters and the anti-est anti-hero to ever take a case.

TV SHOWS “The Closer” The Complete Sixth Season “Medium” The Seventh and Final Season “Rocko’s Modern Life” Season 1 “Bleach Uncut” Box Set 9 “Squidbillies” Season 4 “Louie” Season One (c) 2011 King Features Synd., Inc.

ROTH IRA: A LIFETIME INVESTMENT Provided by Adam Grayson of EdwardJones Investments

S

ome investments are appropriate during your working years, while others are more suitable for retirement. But a Roth Individual Retirement Account (IRA) can provide you with benefits at virtually every stage of your life. Let’s take a quick “journey through some of these stages to see just how valuable a Roth IRA can be. To begin with, you can open a Roth IRA at any age, provided you have earned income and meet certain income limits. So if you’re just starting out in your career, put as much as you can afford into your Roth IRA and gradually increase your contributions as your income rises, up to the contribution limit. A Roth IRA is an excellent retirement savings vehicle because it can grow tax free and your contributions can be invested into just about any investment you choose — stocks, bonds, mutual funds, CDs and so on. Of course, when you’re young, you might not be thinking much about retirement. But the earlier you start contributing to a Roth IRA, the more you could end up with — and the difference could be substantial. In fact, if you started putting money into a Roth IRA at age 30, and you contributed the maximum amount each year until you reached 65, you would accumulate more than $766,000, assuming you are in the 25% tax bracket and you earned a 7% return, compounded annually. But, given the same assumptions, you’d end up with only about $365,000 if you waited until 40 before you started contributing.

It clearly pays to contribute early and annually to a Roth IRA. (In 2011, the annual contribution limit is $5,000, or $6,000 if you’re 50 or older.) There are additional benefits to funding a Roth IRA, such as its flexible withdrawal options, which are available to you even before you retire. Since you already paid taxes on the money you put into your Roth, you can withdraw your contributions at any time without paying taxes or penalties. Generally speaking, it’s certainly best to leave your Roth IRA intact for as long as possible. But if there’s an emergency and you need access to the funds, you can also withdraw your Roth’s earnings tax free, provided you’ve held your account at least five years and you don’t start taking withdrawals until you’ve reached 59½. Now, let’s fast-forward to your retirement. Unlike other retirement accounts, such as a traditional IRA or a 401(k), your Roth IRA does not require you to start taking withdrawals at age 70½ — or ever. If you don’t need the money, you can leave it alone, possibly to grow further, for as long as you like. This means that you might have more money to bequeath to your children or other beneficiaries, and they won’t have to pay income taxes on withdrawals from either your contributions or your earnings, provided your Roth IRA account has been open for at least five years. Keep in mind, though, that your beneficiaries will be required to take distributions based on their life expectancy. As you can see, a Roth IRA can be an excellent financial “traveling companionâ€? as you go through life. So consider adding a Roth to your portfolio — and bon voyage.

ften after I have discussed with clients the pros and cons of incorporating their business, and the best choice of limited liability entity, I receive a call questioning the necessity of doing so. Invariably this is because, at my urging, they have consulted with an accountant, and he has told them they don’t need to incorporate. The accountant may note – correctly – that they are not yet generating sufficient income from the business to realize any of the tax benefits incorporation can bring. The problem is that the accountant is so focused on tax and other financial issues that he has lost sight of the legal issues. Limited liability entities are first and foremost creatures of LAW, created fundamentally for legal reasons. The intent behind permitting such entities is to shield business people from personal liability should their businesses fail or face legal claims, and to segregate the liabilities of and potential claims against different business
