On a trip to the Dakotas in 1832, artist George Catlin was so concerned about westward expansion on wildlife, the wilderness and the American Indian civilization that he planted the seed for a national park system when he wrote: “By some great protecting policy of government ‌ in a magnificent park ‌ A nation’s park, containing man and beast, in all the wild and freshness of their nature’s beauty!â€?

Maine. Eventually, in 1926, Congress authorized the Great Smoky Mountains, Shenandoah and Mammoth Cave national parks in the Appalachia’s.

Few could argue the beauty of and the pride Americans have for our national parks. And we just don’t talk about them. In 2010, more than 281 million of us visited national parks.

Then there was the goldmine of the east full of the War Department’s treasures in historic battlefields, memorials and monuments. After Franklin D. Roosevelt became president in 1933, he transferred the War Department’s parks and monuments to the Park Service. Roosevelt employed thousands in conservation work involving national and state parks with his New Deal to provide relief from the Great Depression.

IN THE BEGINNING Before the National Park Service came along to operate these parks in 1916, there was some movement toward establishing national parks starting with Yosemite Valley, which Congress donated to California to preserve as a state park in 1864. In 1872, Congress then reserved Yellowstone “as a public park or pleasuring-ground for the benefit and enjoyment of the people.” Yellowstone sprawled through Wyoming and Montana and was kept under the care and feeding of the Department of the Interior.

LONG STORY LONG The National Park System houses 394 “units” that cover a span of 83 million acres. Units are categorized into types of national parks and include national monuments, recreation areas (RA), historic sites, military parks, battlefields and seashores. For example, Ford’s Theater, the site where President Abra-

Eventually, California returned Yosemite and in the late 1800s and early 1900s, more parks were brought into the fold to include Crater Lake, Glacier and Sequoia. During this time, Congress was also working to preserve prehistoric Indian ruins and artifacts. The first, in 1989, was Casa Grande Ruin in Arizona followed by Colorado’s Mesa Verde National Park in 1906. This is when Congress also passed the Antiquities Act which gave American presidents authority to “set aside” such lands, structures and objects of historic or scientific significance.

ham Lincoln was assassinated, is a designated National Historic Site and included in the purview of the National Park System; as well as Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and the Statue of Liberty National Monument. The NPS designations have been known to be confusing to many. Although all of these have equal legal standing in the national park system, they have different things to offer. The NPS provides these definitions. National Park: generally large natural places having a wide variety of attributes, at times including significant historic assets. Hunting, mining and consumptive activities are not authorized. National Monument: landmarks, structures and other objects of historic or scientific interest situated on lands owned or controlled by the government National Parks... Continued on Page 3

The movement for conservation of these lands continued, but had the added support of capitalism. There were those who promoted preservation for the sole purpose of making money through tourism. The short story is that on Aug. 25, 1916, President Woodrow Wilson signed the legislation that created the National Park Service under the Interior Department within the federal government.

ones collapse. The Badlands in South Dakota is known as “The Wall.” It is 100 miles of a rock mass composed of cliffs and gullies formed by moving water that looks like nothing one could imagine. Death Valley covers 3.4 million acres in Nevada and California. At 282 feet below sea level, this park has the lowest elevation of any national park. It averages only 1.5 inches of rain each year and “enjoys” temperatures of around 120 degrees Fahrenheit. About a million people visit this park every year. Denali is the first national park founded in Alaska and spans over 6 million acres. Denali means “the High One,” named after Mount McKinley. The Everglades in Florida was the first national park not set aside for scenic views but solely to preserve an ecosystem. However, encroaching farmlands have threatened this ecosystem by diverting water resources for crop irrigation. There is a movement to save the Everglades. Glacier on 1 million acres in Montana is said to be the source of the continent’s water. It flows to the Gulf of Mexico, Hudson Bay and the Pacific Ocean. Grand Canyon, also over 1 million acres, offers visitors to Arizona a high tech guide solution – “Park Ranger Audio Tours” via your cell phone. The Grand Canyon has 277 miles of river that is more than a mile deep in many spots. Great Smoky Mountains is thought to be the nation’s busiest park, attracting about 9 million visitors a year, likely due to scenic 384 miles of highway that skirts the park. Shenandoah is about 200,000 acres along the Blue Ridge Mountains. This national park was a direct product of the government jobs program in the

Yellowstone covers more than 2.2 million acres in Wyoming, Montana and Idaho. This park is the home of forests, geysers, hot springs and wildlife galore. It sits atop a volcano that hasn’t erupted in a half million years but has been showing signs of movement lately.

• Companies today sometimes seem to go too far in advertising their products, but consider Richard Chesebrough, who invented the petroleum jelly Vaseline in 1872. In order to market his new creation as a salve for cuts and burns, he traveled around New York state demonstrating the efficacy of the product by burning his skin with acid, then applying Vaseline to the injury. A display of his past burns that had been healed with Vaseline would, in theory, convince people to buy the product. • If you’re looking to brighten up your living space with some greenery, you might want to consider getting a bonsai tree. very year, fall and winter arrive right along with the flu and flu vaccines. Summer season is normally not a time when people think of receiving the seasonal flu vaccine. However, it is a time when people can think of how to boost their immune systems before fall and winter arrive. A person who carries a strong immune system should not need a flu vaccine. First, a person needs to examine what is actually in the flu vaccine. A website, National Vaccine Information Center (NVIC), offers an abundance of information on childhood and flu vaccine information. Their site allows a person to even calculate how much aluminum and other toxins a child would receive in one immunization office visit. Their site also offers the inserts, in PDF form, that lists all the ingredients for various vaccines, including the flu vaccine. Each person needs to make his or her own choice regarding vaccinations, but that choice needs to be based on knowledge. NVIC offers that knowledge. What is in a flu vaccine? specific brands, some use formaldehyde and polysorbate 80. The National Cancer Institute labels formaldehyde as a cancer causing substance(http://www.cancer.gov/ cancertopics/factsheet/Risk/formaldehyde). Organic Health labels polysorbate 80 as being linked to infertility (http://organichealthadviser.com/archives/polysorbate-80 -in-swine-flu-vaccines-infertilityin-humans). They also state that polysorbate 80 is in the Swine Flu vaccine. There are other ingredients, as well, that one can find printed on the inserts. The inserts can be requested from pharmacies as well.

According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), the flu shot from 2009 will be the same flu shot for 2011. (http://www.cdc.gov/flu/ about/qa/fluvaccine.htm). Here are tips to manage your water bill and keep your yard healthy during the hot months.

Each lot is conducive to enhancing your grandest ideas and desires. Timing is such that in acting promptly with a builder of your choice, there is a possibility of occupying your brand new home by year end.

When to Water Water in early-morning hours before sunrise to lessen water lost to evaporation and daytime winds.

The lots range from .53 Acres to .78 Acres and have availability to the Central Water and Sanitation System. Please see the lot choices indicated on the map above, and call FiveStar at (719) 460-6900 to meet and look at the grand homesite possibilities in this superb development.

Since both overwatering and under watering can damage plant leaves, the best solution is to water deeply and infrequently. This allows oxygen in the soil, washes salts away and encourages deep rooting. For most trees and shrubs older than three years, water deeply once every seven to 10 days. Newer plants may need water twice as often until established. Add a layer of surface mulch 2- to 4-inches thick to conserve water between waterings and cool and enrich the soil. Make sure you have the right fertilizer both for your specific plants and for the time of year. Some fertilizers release much faster in hot weather, increasing the potential for damage.

These offers are subject to change without notice. Please contact FiveStar Properties for current status.

mower to the proper height to promote a healthy lawn and to reduce water use. Recommended mowing heights are 2 1/2" to 3" for tall fescue and 3/4" to 1 1/2" for bermuda. Sprinkler Tips Lawns usually develop brown spots because of faults in the sprinkler system, such as mixed types of sprinkler heads, blocked spray patterns and improper spacing between sprinklers. Check that your sprinkler heads are level to grade, perpendicular to the slope of the lawn and not watering sidewalks, walls or patios. If grass blocks the spray, trim around the sprinkler head or install a taller 3- or 4-inch popup. Lawn sprinkler heads should provide "head-to-head" coverage. That means the spray of one sprinkler should reach the head of the adjacent sprinkler. If your lawn looks great except for stressed areas in front of the sprinkler heads, the heads are too far apart. A device called an undercut nozzle can help. Compacted Lawn Compacted soils also can stress your lawn. Sometimes simply aerating a stressed area and giving it a good soaking solves the problem. Purchase a hand-operated coring aerator at a nursery, or hire a professional to do the job. Aeration should be done at least twice a year. An extremely dry lawn becomes hydrophobic, or water-repelling. Add a tablespoon of liquid soap to a gallon of water and drench the dried area. This breaks down the surface tension of the grass, making it hydrophilic, or water-loving. Then give it a good soaking.

• On July 8, 1776, a 2,000-pound copperand-tin bell now known as the “Liberty Bell” rings out from the tower of the Pennsylvania State House (now Independence Hall) in Philadelphia, summoning citizens to the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence. As the British advanced toward Philadelphia in the fall of 1777, the bell was removed from the city and hidden in Allentown to save it from being melted down by the British and used to make cannons. • On July 4, 1826, the 50th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence, John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, the second and third presidents of the United States, respectively, die. Both men had been central in the drafting of the historic document. • On July 5, 1865, in London, revivalist preacher William Booth and his wife Catherine establish the Christian Mission, later known as the Salvation Army, to wage war against the evils of poverty and religious indifference.

• On July 7, 1930, construction of the Hoover Dam begins. Over the next five years, a total of 21,000 men would produce what would be the largest dam of its time. Today, the Hoover Dam generates enough energy each year to serve more than a million people.

Back in 1943, we had “The Basic Seven -- seven categories of food we needed to eat on a daily basis. Serving sizes weren’t included.

While the “Plate is a bit silly, as was the Pyramid, the information behind it is solid. Check the USDA website and see what it has to say.

In 1956, the USDA switched to “The Basic Four, and in 1979 to the “Hassle-Free Guide to a Better Diet. It added a new food category with fats, sweets and alcohol. In 1984, we got the “Food Wheel: A Pattern for Daily Food Choices. This one included serving sizes.

You know, of course, that an entrepreneur somewhere is busily creating MyPlate plates with the appropriate sections all outlined for us.

Lutein is a plant product that might aid in delaying the advance of dry macular degeneration. At this very moment, a large study is taking place to ascertain the place of lutein in the treatment of this common eye condition. The amount of lutein being tested in the study is 10 mg a day. Lutein appears to be a very safe substance, but I would stick with the 10 mg dose until the present study defines lutein’s place and its optimum dose.

MACULAR DEGENERATION PROGRESS CAN BE SLOWED

The booklet on macular degeneration explains this prevalent eye problem in great detail. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 701W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Can. with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I have the dry type of macular degeneration. I take PreserVision with lutein tablets twice a day. I hear lutein is very good for my eyes, and I would like to take more than the 10 mg a day that I get in my tablets. I don’t know how much is safe. My doctor said he didn’t know. Will macular degeneration leave me completely blind? How long will it be before I cannot see anymore? -- C.B.

***

ANSWER: The macula is a small, round area in the center of the retina, the layer at the back of the eye that transmits incoming images to the brain so we can see. The macula is essential for clear, central vision, the kind needed to read, to drive and to recognize faces. Off-tothe-side vision remains. You won’t go completely blind. Furthermore, dry macular degeneration most often advances gradually. It’s the more common variety, accounting for 90 percent of cases. It can stay at its present level for years, even for life. Wet macular degeneration comes about from the growth of blood vessels beneath the retina. Those vessels are fragile and leak fluid. It tends to advance more rapidly. Currently no cure exists for dry macular degeneration. A combination of vitamin C, vitamin E, beta carotene (or vitamin A), zinc and copper appears to slow moderate macular degeneration’s progression to a more advanced stage. Your PreserVision is one such preparation.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Please tell me about post-traumatic stress disorder. I think someone in my family suffers from it. -- A.F. ANSWER: Having faced an event that threatened life or caused serious injury is the basis for post-traumatic stress disorder. The event keeps resurfacing in the mind with a clarity that imparts terror and helplessness, and sometimes guilt. The remembrance can happen during the day or in dreams. An affected person stays in the alert mode at all times. He or she loses interest in life, neglects those around him or her, suffers from fragmented sleep, often erupts in outbursts of anger and is usually quite depressed. Soldiers, firemen, policemen and those who suffered a sexual or physical attack are people who most often develop PTSD. With the combination of talk treatment and medicines, these people can usually regain their equilibrium and resume a normal life.

SNIPPETZ DINING GUIDE ®

in the U.S. for many years as a dietary supplement, it was not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration. Now that the FDA has declared its active ingredient -- rebaudioside A -- as “generally accepted as safe,” it is showing up in products like tabletop sweetener packets. PureVia (from PepsiCo and a subsidiary of Merisant, Whole Earth Sweeteners) and Truvia (from Coca-Cola and Cargill), along with some flavored waters and lower-calorie soda and fruit drinks, now contain stevia. Leaves from the stevia plant are steeped in water and then processed into crystalline form. These crystals create a sweet taste in the mouth, but are calorie-free when digested. As a sweetener, stevia’s extract is 250 to 300 times sweeter than sugar. This means only a very tiny amount is needed to add sweetness to a food or beverage.

NATURALLY SWEET

As with any sweetener, there are challenges to using stevia in food products. Stevia is naturally bitter, but tastes sweet after some delay. Although it is temperature and acid stable, the natural bitterness and intense sweetness are challenges the food industry will have to overcome. Consumers will need to taste stevia and decide for themselves how well they like it.

Another possible challenge is the price. Currently, it is expensive to use stevia or its active ingredient in foods. Products containing this naturally derived sweetener may be out of many consumers’ price range.

I use the leaves of this naturally sweet herb to sweeten a variety of drinks. It’s also available commercially in a granular form like sugar. Like other sugar substitutes, consumers need to watch for any warnings or concerns with stevia. It has been classified as safe, but it doesn’t hurt to try it out slowly to see what effect it has on individual taste and digestion. This recipe for Fruit Sorbet uses stevia instead of sugar to sweeten the dessert.

FRUIT SORBET You’ll need an ice cream machine for this delicious recipe. You can use any fruit juice blend concentrate of your choice instead of raspberry. This recipe also works well if you substitute one (12.3 ounce) box of silken tofu for

New DVD Releases for Week of July 4, 2011 PICKS OF THE WEEK

“Of Gods and Men” (R) -- This French import has been collecting awards and nominations for the past few months as the critics’ new favorite foreign-language film. It’s a quiet, thoughtful movie about Trappist monks in Algeria who are faced with a dilemma as fundamentalist violence reaches their peaceful village. It’s easy to see why the film is such a hit with the critics -- like the monks, the movie is slow, contemplative and devoted to its vision.

The modest day-to-day lives of the monks reveal a quiet compassion and firm faith. This slow pace tacitly takes on different tones as the conflicts of the outside world close in. The R-rating comes as a surprise. There is only one brief scene of violence, and absolutely no danger of a child seeing it since no child can make it through the first 20 minutes of this beautiful, snail-slow movie about the challenges of the faithful.

controlled by a sadistic criminal family. Disgusted by the violence and inhumanity he sees in the streets, a lone drifter becomes the only one to take a stand. The quality of the movie shows throughout, so even as it drives off the cliff of good taste -- rolling and burning in the valley below -you can tell that somebody really cared about the color palette and art direction for this horrific spectacle.

“Hobo with a Shotgun” (R) -- This deranged circus of gore and bad language is a treat for fans of ultra-violence and 1970s exploitation films. That statement should be sufficient warning for those with high taste, because that’s as mild as it can be put. “Hobo with a Shotgun” is more accurately described as a blood-fueled roller-coaster ride through a riot of craven psychopaths turning to each other for entertainment. The movie starts with the titular vagrant (Rutger Hauer) arriving in Scumtown, a city

“Crack in the World” [Blu-ray] (NR) -- If you need a reminder that today’s overblown disaster-adventure movies have a rich and storied ancestry, turn to this flick from 1965. It’s a fine specimen of a breed that had to keep the tension going without the aid of computer graphics. When Dr. Stephen Sorenson (Dana Andrews) goes forward with a risky plan to harness energy from the earth’s core, his hubris triggers a split in the planet’s crust -- one that threatens to tear the world wide open! It’s a premise so silly that it could be remade

any day now! Indeed, this movie is wonderful proof that cheeseball science-disaster movies were pretty well figured out a good while ago. The story keeps a steady pace of drama, science and explosions. It’s recommended for fans of disaster movies, or anyone who needs to prove to a young person that exciting old movies do exist.

From that point on, without a master in command of entertainment, boredom was created. And ever since, it’s haunted humans across the globe. Luckily, it’s July. FINANCIAL FOCUS WORK TOWARD YOUR OWN FINANCIAL INDEPENDENCE DAY Provided by Adam Grayson of EdwardJones Investments

O

n July 4, we shoot fireworks, attend picnics, watch parades and otherwise celebrate our nation’s independence and the many freedoms we enjoy. But as you go through life, you’ll find out how important it is to work towards another type of freedom — financial freedom. That’s why you need to put strategies in place to help you work towards your own Financial Independence Day. And there’s no way to “sugarcoat this task, because it will be challenging. In recent years, a combination of factors — including depressed housing prices, rising health care costs, frozen or eliminated pension plans and the financial market plunge of 2008 and early 2009 — has made it more difficult for many of us to accumulate the resources we’ll need to enjoy the retirement lifestyle we’ve envisioned. In fact, the average American family faces a 37 percent shortfall in the income they will need in retirement, according to a recent report by consulting firm McKinsey & Company. But now that we’ve gotten the “bad stuff out of the way, let’s turn to the good news: You can do a great deal to work towards financial freedom during your retirement years. Here are some suggestions that can help:

UNLOADING OUR SECOND FRIDGE HELPED US STOCK UP ON GROCERIES.

Save and invest more. Obviously, the younger you are, the greater the benefit you’ll get by increasing your savings and investments. But whatever your age, you’ll find that it pays to save and invest more. During difficult

economic times, of course, it’s not always easy to boost your savings and investments, but try to find ways that are as “automatic as possible. For example, whenever you get a raise, increase your 401(k) contributions, which come directly from your paycheck. And whenever you get a “windfall, such as a tax refund, try to use part of it for your IRA or another investment account. Rebalance your portfolio. It’s always a good idea to periodically rebalance your investments to make sure they are still aligned with your goals and risk tolerance. But it’s especially important to rebalance as you get older and you near retirement. At this stage, you’ll want to decrease the volatility in your portfolio and lock in what gains you’ve achieved, so you may want to move some (but certainly not all) of your more aggressive investments into less volatile ones. Cut down on debts. It’s easier said than done, but anything you can do to reduce your debt load will free up money to invest for your retirement. Work diligently to pay off whatever debts you can and examine your lifestyle to find areas in which you can reduce spending. Consider working part-time during retirement. Many Americans are now living longer and enjoying happy, healthy retirements. In fact, the concept of “retirement has changed so that it now includes any number of activities — including part-time work in a completely different area from one’s previous career. If you are willing to do even a little part-time work during your retirement years, you can greatly reduce the financial pressures you may face during this time of your life. The 4th of July comes and goes quickly. So put strategies in place now to help you work towards your own Financial Independence Day. IT’S THE LAW! by Christopher C. Meyer, Attorney at Law, P.C.

THE MARRIAGE ZONE: HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO GET A DIVORCE? By Christopher C. Meyer © September 2008

W

hen I speak to someone interested in getting a divorce or a legal separation, one of the first questions they ask is: how long will it take? It is human nature that, after making the difficult decision to get a divorce or a legal separation, people want the desired results to occur as soon as possible. The theoretical shortest amount of time it will take to get your divorce or legal separation is 91 days from the time your case is filed with the Court. The Colorado Legislature has passed a law that requires Judges to wait 90 days after the case is filed before they can issue your divorce decree or decree of legal separation. There are no exceptions to this rule. There is no way around this rule. I don’t know the exact reason for the 90-day waiting period. However, I can speculate that the Legislature felt it was wise to provide a waiting period to prevent people from making impulsive decisions regarding such serious arrangements as marriage. How long your case will take depends upon you and your spouse. If you and your spouse cooperate and agree as to all the financial and parenting aspects of the case, your case may only take 91 days until the decree is entered. The more assets and debt you have, and the more complicated your financial arrangements are, it is likely that your case will take longer to resolve. With

If you want your case completed as soon as possible after the 90-day waiting period has expired, you need to be organized and willing to cooperate with your spouse. It is important to remember that anything you and your spouse can’t agree on, a Judge will ultimately have to decide at a hearing.
