ugust became National Inventors month starting in 1998, and was sponsored by the Academy of Applied Science, Inventors’ Digest magazine and United Inventors Association of the USA. What would we do without disposable tissue, glue and Teflon? It all came from some ingenious minds that spent hours, days, months or years dedicated to making our world a better place with modern conveniences.

If you’re finding yourself seeking comfort from the summer heat near the air conditioning of your home, office or car, you can thank Willis Haviland Carrier who invented the formula and apparatus that would eventually become air conditioning in the early 1900s. Carrier was an engineering graduate of Cornell University and his formula continues to be the basis of all fundamental calculations within the air conditioning industry. The first plant to house this new “Apparatus for Treating Air” was a printing plant in Brooklyn, New York beginning in 1902.

de Mestral, was inspired by how cockleburs could cling to clothing and quickly began experimentation with the hook and loop process. He received his patent in 1955 and called the product VELCRO®, which is derived from the French words velour (velvet) and crochet (hook). De Mestral first used cotton for his invention, but later turned to other more durable substances. Now VELCRO® is made from various substances such as nylon, plastic, Teflon and glass.

President George Washington was the first president to sign the Bill that established the American Patent System in 1790. Since then, more than 6 million patents have been issued – some great and some, well, at least interesting.

Yes, glass. NASA uses an extensive amount of Velcro made of Teflon, polyester and a glass backing for anchoring equipment, such as a meal tray attachment and to temporarily hold things in place within the shuttle’s weightless environment. There is also a small piece of VELCRO® inside the helmets of the astronauts to be used as a nose scratcher.

THE GLUE THAT KEEPS ON BINDING Harry Coover was a research chemist working for Eastman Kodak during World War II. While trying to produce a substance that would be clear enough to use for gunsights, he discovered a chemical class called cyanoacrylates. Not particularly good for use as a clear plastic, over time Coover discovered the amazing adhesive power of these substances. His “superglue” was used to spray onto wounds to stop the bleeding during the Vietnam War. The substance continues to be used in medical science today. It’s also a pretty handy item around the house for permanently gluing together just about anything including your fingers. Who is the Mother of Invention?... Continued on Page 3

ACHOO! Although many still use the fabric handkerchief, most of us modern folk tend to grab for the disposable tissue, or Kleenex® these days. Those soft little throwaways were invented in the 1920s by Kleenex® Brand. They became quite popular in Canada during the 1926 flu season. Kleenex® smartly used some Hollywood greats such as Jean Harlow and Helen Hayes to promote their product, practically stamping out the monogrammed hankie. Eventually the product came in easy to use cartons with more and more varieties and colors to choose from, as well as other brand names.

DUCK OR DUCT Another product inspired by the needs of the military, duct tape was originally called “duck tape.” The tape was used to seal ammunition boxes during World War II and was named after ducks’ feathers that repel water. Johnson & Johnson Company designed and manufactured the amazing tape in 1942; however, there is no record of any individual or group within the company given credit for the invention. During the post war housing boom, duct tape found its way into homes and was used to secure ducting. Hence, the name change to ‘duct tape.’ Now duct tape is used for many practical purposes as well as creative items (think duct tape wallets) and comes in many colors including pink.

NUTHIN’ STICKS Telfon coating was discovered in 1938 by an American chemist at DuPont, Roy J. Plunkett while researching refrigerants. Plunkett came across this strange substance while testing tetrafluoroethylene. A mistake led to a cylinder of the substance that had solidified into a white powdery solid. The gas had become polymerized and thus became polytetrafluoroethylene. It was slippery, had a very high melting point and

was essentially impenetrable. The first products that used Teflon were machine parts and the military used it for artillery shell fuses and nuclear bombs. It wasn’t until the 1950’s that Marc Gregoire of Paris, France figured out a way to use Teflon on his fishing line so it wouldn’t tangle. We can thank his wife who put it on her pots and pans and Gregoire’s friend, a UPI reporter, Thomas Hardie, who brought it to the United States.

COME AND HAVE LUNCH AT THE JAMMIN’ CABANA Crab Cake Sandwiches, Fish Tacos, Coconut Shrimp, and so much more! Really Great Food!

No one wanted to purchase the product, but Hardie finally convinced Macy’s to take 200 of the slippery jewels. They sold in two days and quickly became a household necessity.

How about being strapped into a harness and pulled on a conveyor through soaping and rinsing just like your car? Originally designed during the Cold War in case large quantities of folks would need to be bathed of nuclear dust. And if you think those are silly, how about the “Pet Rock?” Developed by Gary Dahl because he didn’t like live pets, he came up with his own pet for which he even wrote a training manual. Neiman-Marcus purchased 500 of these adorable creatures and sales soared thereafter in 1975 and 1976. Eventually sales quickly dropped like a rock.

TAI YI: POISONED HEALTH

O

ur food supply has greatly diminished over the years. 100 years ago, food grown had many nutrients and did not have near the same level of toxins now found in food. 40 years ago, our foods, though had some toxins, were actual foods. Much of the food we eat now is genetically modified (GM). That means the food’s genetic structure has been altered and made in a laboratory. There is an abundance of research that discusses GM foods and its side effects. One main company sells GM seeds. One can find the name of that company by searching genetically modified foods or genetically engineered foods in a search engine on the Internet. It is not to judge any company, but it is to be aware of GM foods, which products use GM ingredients, GM crops, and the chemicals that are placed on GM crops in order to grow. One site states that “herbicide tolerant soy, corn, cotton, and canola plants are genetically engineered with bacterial genes that allow them to survive otherwise deadly doses of herbicides. This gives farmers more flexibility in weeding and gives the GM seed lots more profit.” (www. saynotogmos.org). GM seeds must be heavily sprayed in order to sprout. That means, most of the time, when a person eats corn,

corn-on-the-cob, corn bread, or anything made with corn, the corn seed has been laboratory manufactured to be genetically altered and then heavily sprayed with toxic chemicals. The same is for most soy, soy products and canola oils. This will and does create toxic build-up in the body over a period of time. Those toxins can create and contribute to cancer, diabetes, Lupus, skin issues, intestinal issues, and other ailments. Depending on the body’s sensitivity, a person may not notice a difference after eating a GM product. The toxins build up over time and create a cumulative effect, including lowering the immune system. Why does the FDA allow this and why do they not require labeling of GM foods?

A person can research the main company that creates GM seeds, then research who works in the FDA, and find a revolving door between the FDA and a major corporation. The information is not secret; it is just not widely publicized. Many people have become passive and do not ask questions, nor research what is actually going on with our food supply. It is time to ask and it is time to expect answers.

MOMENTS IN TIME THE HISTORY CHANNEL

• On July 16, 1863, the draft riots enter their fourth day in New York City in response to the Enrollment Act. Although avoiding military service became much more difficult, wealthier citizens could still pay a commutation fee of $300 to remain at home. • On July 11, 1899, E.B. White, the author of the popular children’s novels “Charlotte’s Web,” “Stuart Little” and “The Trumpet of the Swan,” is born in Mount Vernon, N.Y. White also updated and expanded “The Elements of Style,” an English usage guide that remains a standard text for many students. • On July 15, 1903, the newly formed Ford Motor Company takes its first order, from Chicago dentist Ernst Pfenning. The $850 two-cylinder Model A automobile with a tonneau (or backseat) was produced at Ford’s plant on Mack Street (now Mack Avenue) in Detroit, and delivered to Dr. Pfenning just over a week later. • On July 12, 1957, Dwight Eisenhower

becomes the first president to ride in a helicopter, a Bell UH-13-J Sioux. Eisenhower suggested the idea to the Secret Service, which saw it as safer and more efficient than the traditional limousine motorcade. • On July 14, 1968, Atlanta Braves slugger Henry “Hank” Aaron hits the 500th home run of his career in a 4-2 win over the San Francisco Giants. Aaron hit a three-run shot in the third inning off Giants’ pitcher Mike McCormick to become the seventh player in baseball history to hit 500 homers. • On July 17, 1975, as part of a mission aimed at developing space rescue capability, the U.S. spacecraft Apollo 18 and the Soviet spacecraft Soyuz 19 rendezvous and dock in space. During the 44-hour ApolloSoyuz embrace, the astronauts and cosmonauts conducted experiments, shared meals and held a joint news conference. • On July 13, 1985, at Wembley Stadium in London, Prince Charles and Princess Diana officially open Live Aid, a worldwide rock concert organized to raise money for the relief of famine-stricken Africans. The 16hour “superconcert” was globally linked by satellite to more than a billion viewers in 110 nations. (c) 2011 King Features Synd., Inc.

Back in 2005, a long-term clinical trial was begun for the purpose of studying whether raising the good cholesterol (HDL) in patients with a history of cardiovascular disease could reduce the rate of more cardiovascular events. They used niacin to regulate cholesterol. Those in the study received “simvastatin and either a high-dose niacin or a placebo.

tin alone. There was, however, a very tiny increase in the number of ischemic strokes in the group that included the niacin. What the scary headlines failed to mention was that the patients who’d been in the niacin group had stopped taking that niacin two months to four years prior. The Food and Drug Administration concluded, in its press release, that it was “unclear whether the niacin had anything to do with the strokes. The National Institutes of Health had its own press release that indicated it had stopped the study because, as the FDA said, niacin didn’t reduce the number of cardiovascular events and continuing the trial wouldn’t have offered any benefits. The NIH is going back to the drawing board in its hunt to find ways to manage cholesterol levels. If your doctor has you on prescriptionlevel niacin and you’re worried, give him or her a call to get advice. We shouldn’t self-diagnose or make medical decisions based on news headlines, especially when headlines often go for the drama factor.

ids as needed -- Tums, Rolaids, Mylanta and Maalox. Eliminate any food that gives you heartburn. Usual offenders are citrus fruits, tomatoes, onions, spicy foods, fatty and fried foods, chocolate, carbonated beverages, mints and caffeinated drinks.

GETTING A HANDLE ON HEARTBURN DEAR DR. DONOHUE: After an endoscopy, the doctor told me I have a hiatal hernia. He said nothing could be done for it and that I will have to live with it the rest of my life. He gave me no medicines or advice. I am anxious about this and would appreciate any info you can give me. -- Anon. ANSWER: The swallowing tube -- the esophagus -- begins at the throat, travels down the chest and finally ends by attaching to the stomach. To reach the stomach, it must go through an opening in the diaphragm, the muscle that separates the chest from the abdominal cavity. That opening is the hiatus. A hiatal hernia is a bulging of part of the stomach through the hiatus and into the chest cavity. Many times, a hiatal hernia causes no symptoms and needs no treatment. At other times, a hiatal hernia produces GERD -- gastroesophageal reflux -- an upward spurting of acid and digestive juices from the stomach into the esophagus. That brings on heartburn, a common problem with many treatments. People without such a hernia also develop GERD. Here are some tips to handle heartburn. Lose weight, if need be. Don’t eat within three hours of going to bed. Elevate the head of your bed using blocks that are 6 to 8 inches tall and placed under the bedposts. This keeps stomach juices in the stomach while you sleep. Sleep on your left side for the same reason. Don’t wear constricting garments around the abdomen or too tight a belt. Take antac-

If these steps don’t solve the heartburn problem, try medicines called acid blockers: Tagamet (cimetidine), Zantac (ranitidine), Pepcid (famotidine) and Axid (nizatidine). In low doses, all of these can be purchased without a prescription. The next step is medicines that turn off acid production. Prilosec (omeprazole) doesn’t require a prescription. The prescription drugs are Prevacid, Nexium, Aciphex, Protonix and Dexilant. If necessary, surgical procedures can correct hiatal hernias. The booklet on hiatal hernias explains this common condition in detail. To obtain a copy, write: Dr. Donohue -No. 501W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: My barber, Vinnie, said my eyebrows were receding and that is an indication of thyroid problems. I write to see what your take is on this. I would like to establish fact from fiction. -- P.D. ANSWER: Vinnie is somewhat near the truth by saying hair loss is a possible consequence of both an underactive and overactive thyroid gland. However, the loss is usually on the scalp, when and if it does occur. Loss only of eyebrow hair isn’t a symptom of thyroid disease. And hair loss from the scalp is not the only sign that things are wrong with the thyroid. Other signs must be present, too.

*** Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.

CRAVINGS CAN DISAPPEAR!

D

id you know that your body can talk to you? Every time you have a ‘craving’ it is your body trying to get your attention and let you know something is needed. If you listen to your body and give it what it needs, those cravings will simply . . .disappear!

Chocolate Cravings Women often crave chocolate, which immediately tells us it is usually rooted in hormone imbalances. Usually the body needs more minerals to address this craving. However, dark chocolate actually has fiber and nutrients that are useful and will not add to this craving. It is the milk chocolate and sugar that

feed the negative craving cycle.

Fit Into Your Favorite Jeans Again

Crunch and Salty Cravings Nothing says crunch and salt like chips! When the body is craving crunchy, salty foods it is the adrenals (the glands that respond to stress) crying out for help. I have found that a good protein shake with minerals and enzymes will support the adrenals and even help with weight loss. Be sure to read labels and get a source that has no or minimal sugar.

Ice Cream Cravings Another common craving is for ice cream - typically at night! This craving usually relates to a need for the good fats – the Omega 3’s. This can be found in good flax or fish oil. Increasing your consumption of good fats through avocadoes, coconut oil, olive oil, seeds and nuts will also help the body overcome this craving.

Cheryl Townlsey, ND 719-487-3171 www.lifestyleforhealth.com *Restrictions apply. For complete details, contact your ViSalus Independent Distributor.

Sweet Cravings This is probably the most common craving. Often it reflects a person with blood sugar imbalances and/or a lack of the good fats. Learning to eat every 3 hours, increasing Omega 3’s and adding a good protein shake to your daily routine will often help this craving.

Protein Shake to Shake the Cravings 8 oz of unsweetened almond milk or low fat milk 2 scoops of a protein powder (I prefer the taste of the ViSalus shake for protein and minerals) 6 ice cubes

1 TBL cocoa (I prefer Penzey’s baking cocoa) 1 TBL flax oil (I prefer Barlean’s Strawberry Banana Swirl or Mango Peach Swirl) 3-4 frozen strawberries or a couple of frozen peach slices - optional Blend an enjoy (also great frozen!) SNIPPETZ DINING GUIDE ®

FRUIT PRESERVES WITH A TWIST

S

ummer is the season for a variety of beautiful fruits at great prices. If you’ve purchased more than you can possibly eat, the best thing to do is to preserve the rest. A great way to preserve extra fruit or fruit with bumps, bruises or knots is to make fruit leather. Fruit leathers, sometimes referred to as fruit roll-ups, are believed to have first been developed in the Middle East. Fresh fruit was cooked and mashed. Then the puree was poured onto muslin cloth and put through a process that allowed the fruit to dry in a thin sheet. The result was a preserved fruit that when dried has a “leathery” appearance that is firm to the touch and lasts a long time. The finished product was cut into shapes and placed into jar for storage. Fruit leather does not require refrigeration and is the perfect snack for long trips. Making your own fruit leather allows you to preserve the fruits of summer and avoid the preservatives or added sugars found in commercially packaged fruit roll-ups. The National Center for Home Food Preservation at University of Georgia Cooperative Extension has helpful directions for making homemade fruit leather:

1. Use 2 cups of fruit for each 13- by 15-inch fruit leather. Select ripe or slightly overripe fruit, and wash it in cool water. Remove and discard the peel, seeds and stems. Cut the fruit into chunks. Puree the fruit until smooth in a food processor or blender. 2. Add 1/4 cup of unsweetened fruit juice or 2 teaspoons of lemon juice for each 2 cups fruit to prevent darkening. 3. Preheat oven to 140 F. Line a 13- by 15-inch baking pan with rimmed sides or 2 small baking sheets with rimmed sides with food-safe plastic wrap, being careful to smooth out wrinkles. Do not use waxed paper or aluminum foil. 4. Spread the pureed fruit evenly, using a spatula, until about 1/8-inch thick on the prepared baking pan. Avoid pouring puree too close to the edges of the pan to make it easier to remove. 5. Drying time in an oven is about 6 to 8 hours, depending on the size of the pans used. Larger fruit leathers take longer to dry. NOTE: Fruit leather dries from the outside edge toward the center. Test for dryness by touching the center of the fruit leather. No indentation should be evident if the fruit leather is completely dry. 6. When dry and while still warm, peel the fruit leather from the plastic and roll it into a log. Allow the fruit leather to cool, slice it into sections, and rewrap the rolls in plastic to keep it fresh. Cookie cutters can be used to cut out shapes that children will enjoy. Store the cut-out shapes in an air-tight, resealable plastic bag. Fruit leather will keep up to one month at room temperature. For storage up to one year, place tightly wrapped rolls in the freezer.

New DVD Releases for Week of July 11, 2011 PICKS OF THE WEEK

“Rango” (PG) -- One of the wonderful things to take shape since the rise of computer-animated kids movies is the notion that adults often must sit through and appear to enjoy the show as well. “Rango” takes control of this idea in an interesting way. Not many kids movies work in references to “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas” or “Chinatown.” “Rango” tells the story of a neurotic pet chameleon dropped into the Wild West. Johnny Depp does a good job giving voice to the

scrawny green hero, and actually gives some depth to the lizard’s shaky bravado. In fact, all of the characters look and sound interesting -- something I didn’t think possible considering the steady cascade of talking CG animals that’s been coming out of Hollywood year after year. The action, visuals, jokes and scruffy little animals rank high among what the genre has to offer. Like the little town housing the characters, the whole movie seems crafted out of little pieces of other, more recognizable efforts. This also might be the movie’s largest drawback. While grownups can appreciate the little homages, many of Rango’s quips could go right over the heads of younger viewers. The movie’s attention to detail makes for a well-crafted animated adventure that nobody is too big to enjoy. “Arthur” (PG-13) -- This remake of the 1981 bumbling-drunk comedy of the same name just doesn’t have the same kick. The story brings back Arthur Bach, a billionaire play-

boy manchild who receives an ultimatum: settle down and get married or say goodbye to the money. The idea was to create a vehicle for Russell Brand, a capable English comedian who just can’t seem to fit into the whole leading-man role. Not that he can’t play a pithy partyanimal Englishman -- you may remember him playing such a role in “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” and “Get Him to the Greek” -- but Brand’s quips and comedy-mugs can’t hold up for a whole movie. There may be a few giggles here and there, if only from errant pieces of Brand’s charm slipping out of the sanitary container of the movie. If you’re interested in the comedic stylings of Russell Brand, there are better examples elsewhere. Likewise, anyone who likes witty inebriated Brits named Arthur can find a better specimen, one from 30 years ago. “Brazil” (R) [Blu-ray] -- This 1985 absurdist science-fiction film is one of those movies

the creator fought for, and watching it shows why. Set in a dismal future ruled by heartless bureaucracy and inefficiency, a government worker starts to see through the elaborate mess of the world around him. Directed by Terry Gilliam, the movie shows a world so dystopian and ridiculous, it’s George Orwell as read by Monty Python. “Brazil” is easily a Blu-ray worthy movie; you wouldn’t want to miss how the pointless complexity and overbearing absurdity of future society is shown through carefully placed visual nuances.

I

f you’re a baseball fan, you’re no doubt aware that the MLB AllStar Game is being played on July 12. But while you’ll probably appreciate the grace and skill of the players, you may not realize just how much a baseball team can teach you about other aspects of life — such as investing. Specifically, consider the following characteristics:

Adam R Grayson, AAMSÂŽ Financial Advisor

Unity — While a baseball team contains a diverse collection of players, they all strive toward a common goal. And the mix of investments in your portfolio needs to work together to help achieve the various goals you’ve established, such as a comfortable retirement, college for your children and a legacy for your family. To work toward your individual objectives, you will need to create an investment mix that’s based on your risk tolerance, time horizon, family situation and other factors. Flexibility — While every member of a professional baseball team is a good player, one might be better than another in a given situation. For instance, a faster runner might pinch-run for someone else. And as you move on in your “game of life, you will need flexibility in making your investment decisions. As one example, when you near retirement, you may want to reduce your exposure to risk somewhat, so you might decide to replace some — but certainly not all — of your growthoriented vehicles with investments that can offer greater protection of your principal.

Consistency — Baseball teams need to be consistent. They choose quality players and must have the patience and discipline to stick with those players during slumps. As an investor, you should choose quality investments and have the patience and discipline to stick with them over the long haul. Diversification — A baseball team doesn’t have just one type of player — it contains pitchers, catchers, infielders and outfielders. Your portfolio also needs to be diversified because if you own only a single type of investment, and a market downturn strikes that asset class particularly hard, your portfolio could take a big hit. Owning a diversified mix of stocks, bonds, government securities, certificates of deposit (CDs) and other investments can help reduce the effect of market volatility on your holdings. Keep in mind, though, that diversification, by itself, can’t guarantee a profit or protect against loss.

Good management — Even the best group of baseball players needs a manager to guide them and make decisions during a ballgame. And to help you make investment choices during different times in your life, you might benefit from working with a financial professional — someone who knows your risk tolerance, investment preferences and longterm aspirations. You may never find yourself surrounded by the greatest ballplayers in the world — but remembering these traits can help keep your portfolio “in the game.
