umankind has been fascinated with animals for centuries. Whether to satisfy a curiosity or a need for nonhuman companionship, early on in society animals were taken out of their natural habitat into captivity. Eventually, the enclosures that housed the animals became known as zoos.

Zoos worldwide have evolved over thousands of years. Steel-bar enclosures and cement cages are for the most part long gone. Most zoos today try to emulate the animals’ natural environment, and most of the animals are no longer taken from the wild. Zoos have adopted captive breeding programs, with education and species restoration as part of their goal.

THE FIRST ZOOS On July 1, 1874, the Philadelphia Zoo opened its gates to more than 3,000 visitors. Located on the grounds of the home of William Penn’s grandson, John, the zoo was the first in the U.S. Gatekeepers charged 25 cents for admission (10 cents for children). During its first year, more than 228,000 people visited the zoo, which housed 813 animals. Today, the 42-acre zoo has more than 1,600 rare and endangered animals and receives about 1.1 million visitors annually. The Victorian gates and gatehouses are the same today as they were in 1874. The Philadelphia zoo is often cited as one of the top zoos in the country.

In the early 1950s, the Schoenbrunn Tiergarten Zoo provided Johnny the chimpanzee with a set of paints, and Johnny took to it like an impassioned artist. When Johnny died in 1992, Nonja, a female orangutan, inherited his paints and became an acclaimed artist when three of her pictures sold in London for more than $20,000.
Knut
Nonja paints for about 30 minutes at a time, and her method is unique. When she’s not using nontoxic, water-based markers, Nonja dips a paintbrush in a variety of nontoxic food coloring dissolved in water and placed in yogurt cups. Nonja chooses her colors and always tastes it as well. She also likes to pour all the liquids together and “splash” them onto the paper using a hand/wrist action.
The oldest zoo in the world is the Schoenbrunn Tiergarten zoo in Vienna, Austria. The zoo was built in 1745 and opened around 1752, but only to scientists. In 1765, the zoo opened to the public. Legend has it

In December 2006, a polar bear gave birth at the Berlin Zoo in Germany and then abandoned her little cub. Zookeeper Thomas Dorflein became the surrogate mom, bottle-feeding and raising the cub they named Knut. When animal rights activists decried Knut’s captivity, the cub became a worldwide sensation. Knut received quite a bit of attention and care throughout his short life. He often interacted with other polar bears, too, but early this year Knut suffered convulsions and fell into a pool as horrified visitors watched. It is believed that brain damage contributed to Knut’s death.

Harriet In 1835, Charles Darwin snatched a tortoise from the Galapagos Islands. Animal experts estimated that Harriet was 5 years old at the time of capture. Captivity must have agreed with her because Harriet, who lived out her last years at the Australia Zoo in Queensland, Australia, was one of the oldest known living creatures when she died of a heart attack in 2006. She was 176 years old.
Paul This psychic octopus predicted the winner of eight World Cup matches in 2010. Paul lived at the Sea Life Center of Oberhausen, Germany. Before each World Cup game, his caregivers gave Paul two underwater boxes – each containing a different flag representing one of the teams playing in the next match. Paul picked out (swam to) the winner’s box every time. Who knew?
Koko Probably the most renowned among zoo inhabitants in the U.S., Koko the gorilla rose to stardom by learning more than 1,000 signs based on American Sign Language. Koko also understands about 2,000 words in spoken English. Although her language accomplishment was sufficient enough to catapult her to glory, Koko also achieved acclaim because she is a gentle and loving pet owner. Koko’s teacher, Penny Patterson, revealed in the book she wrote, “Koko’s Kitten,” that Koko actually asked her for a cat. Koko chose a gray male Manx from a litter of abandoned kittens and named it “All Ball.” That same year – 1984 – All Ball escaped from Koko’s cage and ran into the path of a car. All Ball died and when Pat-
terson signed to Koko that the kitty was gone, Koko signed the words “bad and sad; frown and cry.” Patterson wrote in the book that Koko cared for the kitten as if it were a baby gorilla. Patterson also reported that she heard Koko make sounds like those of a human crying.

WHAT ARE WE EATING?
L
ast week, my article was on genetically modified (GM) foods and its possible side effects. GM foods do cause concern and it is beneficial to avoid GM foods by avoiding processed foods as much as possible. About 80% of packaged foods are GM foods. However, eating GM foods is not the only concern. Anyone who eats animals needs to be aware of what the animals were eating and how they were treated prior to slaughter. In this article, chicken feed and chicken treatment are examined. Two concepts, to examine with chickens, are their living space and their food. Conventional factory farmed chickens live in enclosed and in very close quarters. The chickens are so close; they have no room to move. There is no sunlight or fresh air. This type of living quarter situation breeds illness. It also can create panic amongst the chickens. The chickens can have broken legs, sicknesses, and it is simply an inhumane way to treat chickens. As a result of the living quarters, the chickens need plenty of antibiotics. When people eat the chickens, they consume the antibiotics as well. This can effect how a person responds to human intended antibiotics. Some poultry and eggs are labeled ‘Free Range’. According to the USDA requirement, Free Range
chicken means each chicken receives one square foot of space. Free Range does not mean much in the sense of humane treatment. A chicken farmer at the Monument Farmer’s Market shared some knowledge when I recently purchased eggs from him. He stated that he refused to feed his chickens corn or soy feed because 90% of corn and soy is genetically modified. When an animal eats GM feed, the feed alters the animal’s genetic structure. When a person eats the animal, it alters the genetic structure of the person. Over time, it lowers the immune system of the person. The farmer also acknowledged that ‘Free Range’ does not mean anything of substance. It is seen as a joke to many.

Aside from chicken’s conventional living quarters, their feed is less than appetizing. Whatever they eat, is then consumed by the person eating the conventional chicken. According to one site, “under current law, pigs, chickens, and turkeys that have been fed rendered cattle can be rendered and fed back to cattle-a loophole that may allow mad cow agents to infect healthy cattle. Animal feed legally can contain rendered road kill, dead horses, and euthanized cats and dogs. Rendered feathers, skin, hair, hooves, blood, and intestines can also be found in feed, often under catch-all categories like animal protein products.” (www.ucsusa.org/food_and_agriculture). This certainly does not make for an appetizing dinner. Technically, organic chickens are supposed to be fed organic and vegetarian feed. Research the companies that sell animal meat and animal products. Make wise choices to become and to stay healthy. Life goes by too quickly to be unhealthy and unhappy.

Check concrete for "water flow" While washing concrete, watch to ensure that the hard surface directs water away from the home's foundation. If the concrete sends water toward the foundation, take action. First, inspect around the outside of the foundation for damage, looking for cracks and crumbling. to redirect the drainage by removing or correcting the slope of the concrete. If that's not feasible, a sump pump could be used to mechanically remove the water. A sump pump's operation is triggered when water reaches a predetermined level under the home, setting off a floating switch. Patch cracks in concrete Inspect concrete for cracks. To patch them, clean the cracked area well with a wire brush and small broom. To repair narrow cracks, use masonry crack filler. It comes in cartridges and can be injected into the crack. For bigger openings, apply vinyl concrete patching compound, smoothing the surface with a putty knife. Patch cracks in asphalt You can extend the life of an asphalt driveway or path by inspecting it two or three times a year and using a caulking gun and asphalt patching caulk ($5 to $15 a tube) to repair cracks. If you leave cracks, they'll grow and plants can take root, widening the damage. Squirt the caulk into the cracks and use a disposable putty knife to even the surface. Every five years, treat asphalt to a coat of asphalt sealer ($50-$100 for a fivegallon bucket). Brush it on with a squeegee or push broom.

he Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is warning us about picnic food, and what it says applies especially to seniors. It seems there’s another potential foodborne illness: Listeria. Picnic foods -- hot dogs, deli meats, prepared salads, meat spreads from the deli case and soft cheeses -- can contain bacteria called Listeria. Smoked seafood and unpasteurized milk also can harbor Listeria. Even if the bacteria has been killed by cooking, it can be recontaminated because the bacteria can grow at refrigerator temperature. In addition to food poisoning, those with health risks can come down with a very serious infection after consuming Listeria-contaminated foods. Even for seniors without medical conditions, healing from an infection can include long hospitalizations -- or even death. Here are some food safety tips from the

I weigh 125 pounds and am 5 feet 1 inch tall. My diet consists mostly of health foods. -- G.R. ANSWER: Vertigo (dizziness), ear noises (tinnitus) and fluctuating hearing loss are the three signs of Meniere’s (menYAIRS) disease. Vertigo comes in spells lasting 20 minutes or more, and they leave the person off balance for several days. Tinnitus can be ringing, roaring, hissing or other sounds that come and go but eventually stay permanently. The same happens with episodes of hearing loss. It becomes a permanent problem in time. All these signs are due to a buildup of fluid in the inner ear, the place where hearing and balance take place. Treatment of Meniere’s focuses on ridding the inner ear of the fluid buildup. A strict low-salt diet goes a long way in reducing symptoms. The reason is that salt brings on fluid retention. Restricting caffeine and alcohol also helps. Diuretics -- water pills -- might be needed to get rid of the fluid. A hearing aid usually overcomes deafness. Dizzy spells are accompanied by nausea and vomiting. Antivert and Phenergan relieve all three. Should these measures fail, more-heroic

W
e’re having record high temperatures in my home state of Texas. The heat seems to bring out my creativity, as I’ve devised a number of ways to continue to enjoy my favorite meals and desserts without using my oven. My slow cooker is often used in the wintertime for soups and savory dishes, but I’ve discovered that it’s perfect for the summer months as well. The slow cooker can be used, with a few adaptations, for many recipes that are traditionally prepared in the oven. Most slow cookers are sold with a recipe booklet. Expanding on the suggested slow cooker recipes to incorporate ones that usually require baking time in the oven is a great way to conserve energy and keep your home cool. This easy Slow-Cooked Fruit Cobbler is the perfect way to avoid using your oven on a hot summer day. The recipe retains all of the fruity flavors of an old-fashioned baked cobbler without using as much heat. If you’re grilling outside, dessert can be slowly cooking inside and cooling while dinner is served. It’s the perfect finish to a summer meal.
SLOW-COOKED FRUIT COBBLER You can use stemmed and sliced fresh or frozen berries in this recipe instead of the apples or peaches with great results! If you don’t have buttermilk on hand, you can make a good substitute by adding a 1/2 teaspoon of lemon juice to 1/2 cup of milk. Stir and let it set for 10 minutes before using as directed in the recipe.
Biscuit topping: 1 1/2 cups flour 1/4 cup sugar, plus more for sprinkling 4 teaspoons baking powder 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/3 cup cold butter, cubed 1/2 cup buttermilk

Grease bottom and sides of a slow cooker with a removable pot insert with the butter or cooking-oil spray. Add in fruit, sugar, flour, lemon juice and vanilla. Stir to combine. Biscuit Topping: 1. Using a large bowl, mix together flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Cut in the butter with a fork or the tips of your fingers until crumbly. Add buttermilk and stir with a fork to make a slightly sticky dough. With floured hands, gather dough into a ball. 2. On lightly floured surface, gently knead dough about 10 times until smooth. Pat the dough into a circle large enough to cover the berries in the slow cooker. Cut the dough into 8 wedges and arrange the wedges over the fruit. Sprinkle wedges with sugar. 3. Place top on slow cooker, and cook on high until the biscuit topping is no longer doughy underneath, about 3 hours. Remove pot insert and let cobbler cool, uncovered, for about an hour before serving. New DVD Releases for Week of July 18, 2011
MOVIES OF THE WEEK “Limitless” (PG-13) -- What if there was a mysterious drug that could unlock the full potential of your mind? Everybody knows that the right answer is to just say “no,” but that never occurred to anybody working on “Limitless,” a non habit-forming, underwhelming experience of a movie. Bradley Cooper stars as Eddie, a struggling writer who comes across a clear pill that optimizes his personality, turning every gleaned fact and forgotten lecture into pure intellect
and drive. With his unlimited potential, Eddie can improve his life in every way and demonstrate incredible powers of deduction, yet he still manages to make bad decisions with predictable consequences. The story is adapted from a novel, and suffers the usual symptoms of a poorly adapted script -- excessive narration, loose ends, under-utilized characters and more narration. The voice-over work and smash cuts manage to keep things moving and make “Limitless” a certified thriller. “Take Me Home Tonight” (R) -- Movies banking on nostalgia should also bring something new to the table, right? Otherwise, why not just watch a movie that was actually made in the beloved time period of your choosing? This is the existential crisis at the core of “Take Me Home Tonight,” a movie dead-set on reminding audiences that the 1980s happened. Topher Grace (“That ‘70s Show,” “Spider-
man 3”) plays Matt, a 23-year-old MIT grad whose lack of direction has him working at a video store and living with his parents. Sounds like somebody is in need of a wild night of partying, chasing girls and self-discovery. There is some real charm and even a few good laughs, thanks to a supporting cast that includes the dopey hilarity of Chris Pratt from TV’s “Parks and Recreation.” This might have been a funnier, more original and more noticeable movie if it shed the ‘80s fixation. As it is, “Take Me Home Tonight” doesn’t compare to the enduring charm of its John Hughes inspiration, but that’s a tall order.

More recently we’ve seen blockbusters like District 9 and Super 8 put their spin on the alien thing (why do they both have numbers in those titles??). The fact is, we wonder about outer space because it’s interesting, and most of all, its fun to speculate.

ike every other investor, you prefer not to see the value of your investments drop. But at some point they will fall simply because of the ups and downs of the market. And how you respond to short-term losses can help determine if you enjoy long-term investment success. Investorsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; feelings about losses can be complex. In the field of economics, an area of study is devoted to â&#x20AC;&#x153;loss aversionâ&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x201D; the concept that people dislike losing money so much that, given a choice, theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d prefer to avoid losses rather than take gains. For example, if you have a high degree of loss aversion, then you will find greater dissatisfaction by losing $100 than youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d get satisfaction from taking a $100 profit. Loss aversion can lead to various forms of negative investment behavior. Here are two of the most common results:

Seeking â&#x20AC;&#x153;risk-freeâ&#x20AC;? investments â&#x20AC;&#x201D; When you think of investment losses, the first thing that probably comes to mind is a drop in stock prices. If youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re really loss-averse, you might seek to avoid this situation by simply avoiding stocks and placing all your money in other investments. While some of these investments may seem â&#x20AC;&#x153;risk free,â&#x20AC;? you must consider factors such as inflation risk â&#x20AC;&#x201D; the possibility that these investments may provide returns that donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t keep up with the rate of inflation.
Holding â&#x20AC;&#x153;losersâ&#x20AC;? too long â&#x20AC;&#x201D; From time to time, you will own investments that, for whatever reason, underperform. If youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re highly lossaverse, though, you may have a tough time acknowledging the losing nature of these investments, so you may be tempted to hold on to them until they â&#x20AC;&#x153;bounce back.â&#x20AC;? But if the investmentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s fundamentals change, or if the investment no longer aligns with your goals, it may be time to sell it and look for other opportunities. Conversely, you may want to hold on to quality investments whose price has dropped in the short term, because these investments may well recover. How can you avoid these types of behavior? For starters, youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll need to recognize the symptoms of loss aversion in yourself â&#x20AC;&#x201D; and then resolve to overcome them. Accept the fact that short-term losses are part of investing and that every single investment carries some type of risk. This doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t mean, of course, that you should do nothing to reduce your risk. One effective risk-fighting measure you can take is to diversify your holdings by investing in a variety of stocks, bonds, government securities, CDs and other investment vehicles. If you had all your holdings in only stocks or bonds, a downturn primarily affecting one of those assets could lead to a big hit for your portfolio. But by spreading your dollars among a variety of investments, youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re also spreading the risk. Keep in mind, though, that diversification by itself canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t guarantee a profit or protect against loss. Investment losses, even short-term ones, arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t much fun. But by not overreacting to these losses, and by diversifying your portfolio in a way that best meets your individual needs, you can look past todayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s losses toward tomorrowâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s possibilities. One thing that hasn’t changed at all: Cleaning products cost too much, and manufacturers have tried to convince us that we need a separate product for each area or function.

If you’re willing to do a little experimenting and follow a few simple recipes, you can make your own cleaning products and save up to 90 percent of the cost of those bought in the store. With a few basic ingredients, you can create multi-use products that not only work, but are safer around children and pets.
and 1 tablespoon non-sudsing ammonia in a spray bottle for use on windows. Isopropyl alcohol acts as a disinfectant, too.
Here are a few examples:
• To clean drains, mix four quarts hot water (not boiling) and 1/2 cup of salt. Pour down the drain and follow with clear, hot water.
• Mix two cups water and one cup hydrogen peroxide and spray on shower grout. • Mix white vinegar and water (50/50 mixture) in a spray bottle for bathroom and kitchen surfaces. White vinegar removes mildew, so it’s effective in showers as well. • Simmer a cup of water and 1 tablespoon of vinegar to get rid of cooking smells from fish, onions and curry. • Mix a cup of water, a cup of Isopropyl rubbing alcohol
• Or, mix two cups of water and 3 tablespoons of vinegar in a sprayer for use on windows.
• Put lemon slices down the garbage disposal for a fresh smell. • Use a paste of baking soda and water to clean your oven. Let it dry overnight. Wipe off with liquid detergent and a little water on a sponge. • Use 1/4 cup of vinegar in the washer’s rinse cycle to cut down on static.
