“If you can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen.” -Harry S. Truman
A
s temperatures soar this summer, the word “hot” is a cliche. Some like it hot and some don’t. But the threadbare phrase “some like it hot” conjures up images of everything from a movie to a song to a heat index to cool cars to salsa dip.

In March 1959, the legendary screen goddess Marilyn Monroe starred in arguably her best film ever: “Some Like It Hot.” The film, a gangster-type comedy directed by Billy Wilder, also featured Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon.

TURN UP THE HEAT
Lemmon and Curtis play two downand-out musicians who witness a brutal massacre. Chicago gangsters, knowing the two saw the murders, are in pursuit of them. Curtis and Lemmon leave town to escape them. The plot thickens when they take a job, disguising themselves as females, to play in an all-girl band bound for Florida. Monroe plays the vocalist, and the two female imposters – Josephine and Geraldine – fall hard for her and end up competing for her affection. There are a few twists and turns that get good laughs, but Lemmon and Curtis in drag is enough comedic buffoonery.
Music fans might remember Robert Palmer’s single “Some Like It Hot,” which became a “hot” hit in the 1980s. Palmer wrote the lyrics for the song. Some like it hot and some sweat when the heat is on. Some feel the heat and decide that they can’t go on. Some like it hot, but you can’t tell how hot ‘til you try. Some like it hot, so let’s turn up the heat ‘til we fry. When it was released in 1985, “Some Like It Hot” hit the top 20 in the UK and No. 6 on the charts in the U.S.
The movie was nominated for many Academy awards and Golden Globes. Some Like It Hot won the Golden Globe for best motion picture comedy. Monroe won the Golden Globe for best actress in a musical or comedy, and Lemmon won for best actor.
THE HEAT IS ON That also was a song. Glenn Frey recorded “The Heat is On,” and it, too, became an international hit. As part of the soundtrack for the 1984 film “Beverly
In 1989, the Library of Congress selected the film for preservation in the
Hills Cop,” the song reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1985. But for the sake of this article, the “heat is on” is about weather. It’s summertime, and some like it hot (and some don’t). People in Arizona, Texas and Florida must like it hot; whereas, Coloradans are perfectly OK with wearing a light jacket after the sun sets in the summer months. However, sticking to heat, here’s an example of sticky heat nationwide. • In mid-July a heat wave across 15 states spawned warnings when temperatures were expected to rise above 105 degrees F. • Wichita, Kan., hit 111 degrees – which has occurred there only 10 times since July 1888. • Joplin, Mo., still recovering from a devastating spring tornado, reached 106

Those who like food that sears the tongue and mouth are called pyro-gourmaniacs. These hot-food maniacs get their kicks from a collection of compounds called capsaicinoids – chemicals in chili peppers that determine the amount of “heat.”
Giant Chocolate Coconut Macaroons
In 1912, Wilbur Scoville wanted more than human opinion when it came to the heat in peppers and hot sauces so he developed the Scoville Organoleptic Test. Volunteer tasters tried groundup chilies diluted and neutralized by sugar water. The heat of the pepper was measured by the amount of sugar water needed to quell the heat. The hottest pepper recorded scored 577,000 Scoville heat units, which took 577,000 cups of sugar to neutralize the heat in one cup of the pepper. Still called the Scoville heat unit today, the subjective human taste test has been eliminated. Instead, the capsaicinoids are extracted from the pepper and tested through a highly technical device.

Hot pepper eating contests exist worldwide for the daring pyro-gourmaniac, but how many could eat the hottest pepper in the world? According to the Guinness World Book of Records, the chili pepper called the Bhut Jolokai has earned its No. 1 place in the record book, measuring in at 1,001,304 Scoville heat units at New Mexico State University in 2006.

The Guinness Book of World Records, however, has rejected all claims for eating the pepper, although many try. Anandita Dutta Tamuly of India ate 51 Bhut Jolokia peppers on April 13, 2009, as celebrity chef Gordon Ramsey watched and cheered. Then 26 years of age, a homemaker and mother, she also smeared the seeds of 25 chilies in her eyes in one minute.

• The chili pepper comes from South America. Christopher Columbus discovered it and brought it home to Europe. • Mexico grows more than 140 varieties of chili peppers. • When hot sauce is consumed, the body reacts by sweating – it’s referred to as gustatory perspiration. • In general, the smaller the pepper the hotter it is. The world’s hottest peppers measure less than 3 inches long. • Chili peppers are a fruit and cholesterol free, low in sodium and calories, rich in Vitamins A and C; and a good source of folic acid, potassium and Vitamin E.

s a member of the Tri-Lakes Chamber of Commerce, I enjoy meeting new people. At a recent networking meeting, a fellow Chamber member told me she enjoyed my Tai Yi articles, but did not know what Tai Yi was or how it works. That was wonderful feedback, as it told me there still needs to be clarification in the description of Tai Yi. Since different people come across my article at different times, some people may have read the articles describing Tai Yi. At the same time, some may have not read any prior articles and therefore have no background knowledge from which to draw when reading a newer article. Life Energy Flow Tai Yi is another name for Supreme Movement and Supreme Health. Tai Yi is an Eastern method of hands-on healing. It is similar to acupuncture and acupressure in its delivery method. Tai Yi does NOT use needles; it uses pressure points. Tai Yi is a very ancient form of healing and it did die out for quite a while. The current Tai Yi teacher began learning Tai Yi from his teacher in the 1980s. The learning was quite intense and he began teaching his own students in the 1990s. The teacher, Hossca Harrison, states some of the history in his Tai Yi History article: “Documents discovered some years ago in the Mawangdui
tomb in China, which was sealed in 198 BCE, contain no reference to acupuncture as such, but does refer to a system of meridians very different from the current use of meridians used in acupuncture. This is typical of Tai Yi.
WHAT’S OLD THAT’S NEW?
KEEPSAKES UNLIMITED
Over time Tai Yi became localized and was used in the mountainous area of northwest China, west of the Min River, near the border of Tibet, in Szechuan by an ancient people called the Chiang Tribe.”
Antiques & Collectables
Tai Yi, when completed correctly, is the most powerful hands-on healing modality because it works with all aspects of the body. It works with all the meridians and can assist many different emotional, mental, and physical difficulties. There are over 4,000 treatments and Tai Yi students are required to attend class four weekends per year, every year, while that student/practitioner is working on the public. A practitioner cannot work on the public until he or she has been tested as proficient.

HAVE HEALTH INSURANCE?
Tai Yi is a healing modality that works with the person to understand the origin of pain and heal it. When that occurs, the person works towards Supreme Health, which means no pain in any way. Pain is not normal. Tai Yi works with a person to understand and heal the pain. Some people enjoy one treatment to several treatments, depending on the need. Tai Yi can assist a person in feeling calm, relaxed, and released. Tai Yi will bring up emotional issues that need to be examined as well, which deepens the healing work. More information can be found at www.lifeenergyflowtaiyi.com and many people are enjoying the excerpts from the upcoming book Walking With a Master. The excerpts are from Hossca’s experiences with his own teacher.

Prune or remove problem trees Trees hanging over your roof, rubbing against gutters or dropping loads of leaves and sticks onto the roof should be pruned. Overhanging branches can provide a ladder for rats and squirrels, and diseased or damaged trees may fall on your home in a storm. Trees can bring up boundary issues. They may straddle the property line between you and your neighbor or the branches from your neighbor's tree may drop fruit onto your land. Although state tree laws vary, in general you have the right to trim branches on your side of the property line as long as you don't endanger the life of the tree. If you kill the neighbor's tree, you are liable. An arborist who understands local laws can be a great mediator between neighbors.

mesh around the inside perimeter of the fence may work. As you walk the fence, test the strength of the connections by gently tugging posts and slats to ensure they're well-attached. Check fence posts for signs of rot (poke soft spots in the wood for crumbling or decay). Remove and replace the damaged areas. Keep fences painted or stained to protect the wood. Repaint or stain when the original finish is thin, cracked or peeling. Before painting, hose off and scrub dirty boards, letting them dry thoroughly. Repel deer Deer can demolish hundreds or thousands of dollars of landscaping in an evening or two. There are several things you can do to keep deer away from your investment: Install a mini fence or put bird netting around prized plants. Garden stores have these materials and can instruct you how to use them. Spray with a home-made deer repellent. Search online garden forums for recipes for repellents that blend eggs, hot sauce (or cayenne pepper), raw garlic, yogurt or buttermilk and dish soap. Spray every three or four days and after a rain. Or purchase one of the better commercial deer repellent sprays.

• On Aug. 2, 1939, Wes Craven, the man responsible for terrorizing millions of moviegoers with his “Nightmare on Elm Street” series, is born in Cleveland. Craven began his directing career with 1972’s “The Last House on the Left,” a violent teen horror film.
• On Aug. 4, 1892, Andrew and Abby Borden are found hacked to death in their Fall River, Mass., home. Daughter Lizzie, later immortalized in a famous rhyme, was arrested and charged with the double homicide. Taken with her Christian persona, the all-male jury acquitted her. Today, the house where the Borden murders occurred is a bed and breakfast.
• On Aug. 7, 1947, Kon-Tiki, a balsa wood raft captained by Norwegian anthropologist Thor Heyerdahl, completes a 4,300mile, 101-day journey from Peru to Raroia in the Tuamotu Archipelago, near Tahiti. Heyerdahl wanted to prove his theory that prehistoric South Americans could have colonized the Polynesian islands by drifting on ocean currents.
• On Aug. 5, 1914, the world’s first electric traffic signal is put into place on the corner of Euclid Avenue and East 105th Street in Cleveland. It consisted of four pairs of red and green lights that served as stop-go indicators, each mounted on a corner post.
• On Aug. 3, 1958, the U.S. nuclear submarine Nautilus accomplishes the first undersea voyage to the geographic North Pole. USS Nautilus, the world’s first nuclear submarine, dived at Point Barrow, Alaska, and traveled nearly 1,000 miles under the Arctic ice cap to reach the top of the world.
• On Aug. 6, 1928, Andy Warhol, one of the most influential artists of the latter part of the 20th century, is born in Pennsylvania. He took literally the advice of an art teacher who said he should paint the things he liked. He liked ordinary things, such as comic strips, canned soup and soft drinks, and so he painted them.
• On Aug. 1, 1966, Charles Whitman takes a stockpile of guns and ammunition to the observatory platform atop a 300-foot tower at the University of Texas and proceeds to shoot 46 people, killing 14 and wounding 31.

STROKE, HEART ATTACK RISKS ARE SIMILAR DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I read all the time about the risks of having a heart attack. I never see anything said about the risks for having a stroke. What are they? I fear a stroke more than I do a heart attack. -- P.S. ANSWER: The risks for both are similar. They include uncontrolled high blood pressure, cigarette smoking, diabetes, high cholesterol, too little exercise, a large waist, excessive alcohol consumption and a high ratio of Apo B to Apo A-1. This last item needs an explanation. Apo B is similar to LDL cholesterol -- the bad kind of cholesterol, the kind that clogs arteries. Apo A-1 is more like HDL cholesterol -- good cholesterol, the kind that keeps arteries clean. I have to admit that these tests are not usually ordered. This subject is complicated by the fact that there are two different kinds of stroke. The more-common variety comes from obstruction of blood flow to a part of the brain from a plugged artery, like the plugged heart artery of a heart attack. The less-common variety comes from the breaking of a brain artery, something called a hemorrhagic stroke. The two require different treatments and different approaches to prevention. P.S. is like most people who live in greater fear of a stroke than a heart attack. The booklet on strokes explains the kinds of strokes and what can be done
DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Recently I had what the hospital doctors called a panic attack. I would like to know what causes them and if there is a cure. Would lack of sleep or medication have anything to do with it? -- W.B.

During an attack, some of the following are present: the heart beats fast; sweat breaks out; people become short of breath; they can feel like they are choking; they might have chest pain and believe they’re having a heart attack; they could be dizzy.
If you experience a panic attack only once, you don’t have a great concern. If the attacks recur, then you do have a problem that needs attention. Report them to your family doctor, who will get you started on treatment and refer you to a professional who can unearth hidden causes provoking these attacks.

Including Allergy Injections
ANSWER: A panic attack is a period of extreme fear in a situation that doesn’t warrant such fear. It comes on suddenly, reaches a peak in 10 or fewer minutes and makes the person want to flee from the situation he or she finds him- or herself in -- shopping for groceries, driving a car or walking down a street.
The actual attack probably results from an outpouring of body chemicals, like adrenaline. What triggers the release of these chemicals usually is buried deeply in a person’s subconscious. Lack of sleep or medication could make a person more susceptible to an attack.

ELIMINATE BELLY FAT OR BUMPY HIPS
I
nterestingly, WHERE we carry our weight is as important as carrying too much weight. A pound of fat takes up the space of a grapefruit (and has the same ‘dimple’ appearance). A pound of muscle takes up the space of a tangerine. During weight loss, it is important to track measurements as it is possible to lose ‘inches’ and fat before the scale shows a change. Losing weight that is not fat means you are shrinking, but not getting healthier!
Contact me to learn more:
BELLY FAT Excess weight around the waist is the most serious. This increases the probability of heart disease and often indicates high visceral fat (fat around the organs). To lose this fat, a person must eat more often (every 3 hours) and balance blood sugar levels. Increasing good proteins (i.e., fish, chicken, turkey, eggs or quality protein shakes), good fats (i.e., flax oil, avocados, nuts, seeds, fish) and fresh veggies will also help. Eliminating the “WHITES” (i.e., white flour, white rice, white sugar) is key to reducing the insulin-resistance that causes this type of fat. Ideally a woman’s waist should be 80% of her hips. A man’s waist should be equal to his hips. Example, if a woman’s hips are 40, her waist should be 32. If a man’s hips are 40,

his waist should be 40. A woman has better health when she has more of an ‘hour-glass’ figure.
BUMPY HIPS Excess weight in the hips often reflects an imbalance in the hormones and is more common with women. It can also indicate that the liver would benefit from some support. The best support for the hormones includes increasing consumption of the good fats (Omega 3’s) and also GREENS! Eating a diet rich in green veggies, green salads, green drinks and less fried, fatty foods will support
the hormones and liver. Regular exercise, even simple walking can help weight loss in both areas. However, making the dietary changes is also important. Laughter, relaxation and enjoying life also help the body ‘let go’ of the excess weight. Visit my website, www.lifestyleforhealth.com for more shake recipes.

SNIPPETZ DINING GUIDE ®
The Kitchen Diva by Angela Shelf Medearis
BEAUTIFUL BLACKBERRIES
B
lackberries are one of the great gifts of summer. The berries bloom from mid- to late June, and in most parts of the county, start ripening toward the middle of July. Ripe and unripe blackberries frequently appear on the plants at the same time. The berries are small, green, hard and sour at first, becoming larger, juicier and sweeter as they ripen. Here are some great blackberry facts, tips and a recipe to help you with your summer berry picking and eating!
Blackberry Facts: • Select plump, firm and fully black berries. Unripe berries will not ripen once picked. • Do the math and be careful not to over-purchase, as blackberries quickly mold when left at room temperature and only last a few days in the refrigerator. • You easily can freeze berries that you can’t use right away -- just wash, cut the hulls off and spread the berries out on a baking pan. Place the berries in the freezer. When frozen, place them into a re-sealable bag, pressing out as much air as possible, and then freeze the berries. • The U.S. Department of Agriculture says 1 cup of blackberries has about 62 calories. • A cup of blackberries, not packed down, weighs almost onethird of a pound. • Blackberries were enjoyed by the ancient Greeks, who believed them to be a cure for diseases of the mouth and throat, as well as a preventative against many ailments, including gout. • The blackberry leaf also was used as an early hair dye, having been recommended by Nicholas Culpeper, the 17th-century English herbalist, to be boiled in a lye solution in order to “maketh the hair black.” • Blackberry tea was said to be a cure for dysentery during the Civil War. During outbreaks of dysentery, temporary truces were declared to allow both Union and Confederate soldiers to “go blackberrying” to forage for blackberries to ward off the disease. • Researchers have known for quite some time that berries contain antioxidants, which help to fight cancer-causing free radicals. A study at the University of Ohio has found that blackber-
ries are the most potent cancer fighting berries of them all, by nearly 40 percent! This delicious Blackberry, Pecan and Goat Cheese Salad showcases the sweetness of the berry while providing the crunch and smoothness of the pecans and goat cheese. It’s the perfect summer salad!
BLACKBERRY, HONEY PECAN AND GOAT-CHEESE SALAD This salad beautifully showcases the best blackberries of the season. It’s also a refreshing accompaniment to grilled or spicy barbeque dishes. 1/4 cup pecan pieces 1 1/2 tablespoons honey 2 tablespoons virgin olive oil 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar 1 small garlic clove, finely chopped 1/2 teaspoon Dijon-style mustard 1/4 teaspoon sea salt 1/4 teaspoon fresh ground black pepper 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper 1 package (6 ounces) salad greens 2 packages (4 to 5 ounces each) fresh blackberries, washed and drained 1 large avocado, diced 3 tablespoons crumbled goat cheese 2 tablespoons fresh lemon or lime juice 1. In a small, non-stick skillet, add the pecans and drizzle with 1/2 tablespoon of the honey. Stir and saute until the nuts are lightly browned and fragrant, about 4 minutes. Cool and set aside. 2. In small bowl, whisk together the oil, vinegar, the remaining 1 tablespoon of honey, garlic, mustard, salt and the black and cayenne pepper. Set aside. 3. In salad bowl, toss together salad greens, blackberries and pecans. Add the avocado and goat cheese on top. Sprinkle with the lemon or lime juice. Pour on dressing and toss gently. Serve immediately. Serves 4. *** Angela Shelf Medearis is known as The Kitchen Diva! She’s the executive producer and host of “The Kitchen Diva!” cooking show on Hulu.com. New DVD Releases for Week of August 1, 2011 PICKS OF THE WEEK
“The Music Never Stopped” (PG) -- This is an uplifting family drama for people who really love their music. After being separated for 20 years, Henry Sawyer (J.K. Simmons) is reunited with his son Gabriel (Lou Taylor Pucci) under grim circumstances -- Gabriel has a brain tumor that has robbed him of his ability to form new memories. Determined to have a real conversation with his son, Henry finds a therapist who discovers that music can awaken something in Gabriel and give him a chance to have meaningful conversa-
tions again. Those who can connect to the music or the strained relationship will be taken on a dramatic ride, piloted by an astounding performance by J.K. Simmons -- an actor who you have doubtlessly seen and heard in the past decade, but never knew his name or that he could handle a leading role so well. “Stakeland” (R) -- One might take a brief look at this post-apocalyptic horror film and think it a forgettable clone of “I Am Legend,” but that would be dead wrong. “Stakeland” is the story of survivors and vamp-hunters in the wastelands of America after a vampire epidemic has left human society scattered and living in tiny, frightened rural clusters. The performances, atmosphere and suspense bring a nightmare vision to life without overplaying the violence and gore. Monster-fans who want to see vampires return to their virulent, nonromantic blood-frenzied glory will flock to this movie like a swarm of nocturnal predators descending on a helpless village.
“Exporting Raymond” (PG) -- This goofy light-hearted documentary follows Phil Rosenthal, creator of TV’s “Everybody Loves Raymond,” as he travels to Moscow to aid in the production of Russia’s attempt to produce its own version, “Everybody Loves Kostya.” Dry humor is one of those things that’s highly culture-sensitive, as Rosenthal quickly finds out when the comedy he helped create is wildly and hilariously misinterpreted every step of the way. The comedy sparks flying away from the culture clash are funnier than most sitcom episodes.
This particular box set contains every episode in which they critique movies from the Gamera series -- a Japanese contemporary to the much more popular Godzilla. This set is good for anyone looking to fill out their collection or jump into the MST3K series; a Japanese movie giant flying turtle monster is always good for a laugh.
CULT CORNER
“UFC 130: Rampage vs. Hamill”
“MST3K Vs. Gamera: Mystery Science Theater 3000, Vol. XXI” -- For the uninitiated, the MST3K series follows Joel (and later Mike) as he and his robot pals are forced to watch silly B-movies as an experiment for their evil boss. The result is an endearing TV show that gives the experience of watching wonderfully awful movies with a couch full of quick-witted friends.

‌that time of year again, where we all get the inkling to bowl; National Bowling Week. And I know exactly what you’re thinking – this is the greatest week of the summer, I think I’ll celebrate by gathering at the zoo, commandeering ten penguins and approaching a keeper with a trade proposition; ten penguins for one bowling ball. Well, it’s not the best idea you’ve ever had. With the pending trial, sad penguins, and questionable trade proposition, the plan is probably not worth the extraordinary effort. I offer you, instead, an alternative. Go to Pinz Bowling Center, as it celebrates the week in style!

e’re in the “Dog Days of summer – traditionally the hottest, steamiest time of year. But in a few weeks, the temperatures will begin to cool down. Nature isn’t alone in this heatingand-cooling pattern — you can also find evidence of it in the investment world. To be specific, today’s “hot investments can lose their sizzle quickly — which means that, as an investor, you’ll need to take steps to avoid being left out in the cold. An investment can become “hot — that is, its price can shoot up — for any of a number of reasons. For example, a company that provides a well-known product or service may decide to “go public by making its shares available to investors; when this happens, the stocks become “hot for a while. An investment may also become hot if a favorable event occurs, as might be the case with a drug company that gains permission to sell a medicine that’s much in demand. And some investments heat up because an “expert is touting them in the media. But although different investments may get hot for different reasons, they all share one thing in common: They will cool off. In fact, by the time you and many other investors hear about a hot stock, it may already be cooling off. If you buy into an investment that’s been hot for a while, you should recognize that its “upside potential may not be what you think.
UNLOADING OUR SECOND FRIDGE HELPED US STOCK UP ON GROCERIES.
To help achieve your financial goals, you may be better off by not chasing after hot stocks. Instead, consider these ideas:
Increase share ownership. One key to building wealth is to increase the amount of shares you own in your investments. Hot stocks are often expensive stocks, so you may be limited in the number of shares you can purchase. As an alternative, look for quality investments that are trading at reasonable prices. You might also consider buying additional shares in quality companies you already own. Buy appropriate investments. Even if you can afford to buy some shares in hot stocks, should you? These stocks may not be suitable for your needs, for any number of reasons: too risky for your risk tolerance, too similar to other stocks you already own, and so on. You need to own investments that are appropriate for your individual needs. Of course, you also need to keep in mind that any investment in stocks — whether hot or not — will fluctuate with changes in market conditions and may be worth more or less than your original investment when you sell. Diversify your holdings. By continually pursuing hot investments, you might end up with an unbalanced, non-diversified portfolio. By diversifying your holdings, you can help reduce the impact of volatility on your portfolio. However, diversification, by itself, cannot guarantee a profit or protect against loss. Think long term. Chasing hot stocks is strictly a short-term move. Successful investors adhere to longterm strategies that require discipline, patience and a constant focus on the future. By following these suggestions, you’re unlikely to experience the “thrill of chasing after hot investments — but you will get the satisfaction of building a portfolio designed to help meet your important investment goals. f you didn’t plan for a vacation this summer but are determined to get a break, it’s still possible even at this late date. In fact, the approaching end of summer might work in your favor as owners try to fill last-minute vacancies.

Look for vacation rentals that are within a few hours drive of home. You’ll save precious vacation time by not battling crowds and security at airports and wasting time in the air, not to mention saving money on airfare and transportation. Vacation rentals generally will accommodate your whole family and allow you to save money by cooking your own meals. Many provide laundry facilities. While you might think you want a place with activities suited to your interests, consider taking this opportunity to try something new. If you’re into golf, go for a lakeside cabin that comes with fishing poles and a canoe. If you like water skiing, opt for a condo in an historic city for a change of pace. Go online to www.vacationhomerentals.com and click on your state. You’ll find rentals categorized by county and town, with lots of photos and descriptions.

If a property sounds interesting, check the availability. For verification or to ask if there have been cancellations, contact the owner using the online form. Ask if any end-of-season deals are available. Don’t miss the Last Minute Deals link at the top of the main page. Check www.vacationrentals.com, and again click on your state. You’ll be able to narrow your choices by date, reviews and whether the rental has a pool or allows pets. You can select multiple rentals to compare. Check the activities on each listing for local attractions. This site provides the owner’s name and telephone number, as well as an online contact form.
