them, followed by the Romans. These coins were more valuable than Chinese coins, as they were made from precious metals rather than base metals.

Leather was also used in China around 118 B.C. as a form of currency, a type of banknote.

Before modern day currency, folks started with bartering for goods and services, using all forms of available plants and animals mostly. By about 1200 B.C., the Chinese began using the shells of mollusk’s, called cowrie shells, that became the first real currency. Cowrie shells were readily available in the Indian and Pacific Oceans and are still used in some areas within Africa.

The first paper currency was started by the Chinese around the ninth century A.D. and used through the 15th century. Their production was so prolific that it eventually devalued the currency and the Chinese ceased production in 1455.

Strings of white beads made out of clam shells were the earliest form of wampum used by North American Indians around 1535.

After the Stone Age, the Chinese began manufacturing cowries. They also developed some metal monies in the shape of round coins about this time.

THEN THERE WAS GOLD

By 500 B.C., the country of Lydia (now Turkey) began making coins out of silver that were stamped with the likeness of gods and emperors. The Greeks, Persians and Macedonians quickly copied

per was needed for communications equipment. The result was that the few 1943 copper-alloy pennies made in that year have become valuable to collectors. How valuable? In 1999, one was purchased at an auction for $112,500.

There are estimated to be about 40 more of these in existence. When you break open your piggy bank, grab a magnet.

If the magnet doesn’t pick up that 1943 penny, then you could be rich.

PAPER MONEY U.S. paper money is made from cotton fiber rather than wood fibers. The banknotes are manufactured by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, issued by the Federal Reserve. The Bureau prints 37 million bills a day using 18 tons of ink. The street value of this dough is about $700 million.

Because people were hoarding their coins during the Civil War, the Bureau of Engraving and Printing had to print paper notes in denominations of 3 cents, 5 cents, 10 cents, 25 cents and 50 cents. They were called greenbacks and were used to pay military personnel.

Money is no longer printed in denominations of $500, $1,000 or $10,000.

IT’S ALL IN A NAME Everybody loves a nickname and currency has not been spared. The term “buck� is not only used for the U.S. dollar, but in other countries as well.

ometimes, the saying, “it takes a village to raise a child” is correct. When it comes to education, everyone needs to be involved. Are quality instruction and materials in place? In relation to other states, Colorado does not rank very well in financing education.

There is more than one reason for that occurring, but it comes down to quality education is not as important as other issues in our state and in our country.

Quality education should not only cover the basic learning material, but should also teach students how to think critically, how to use common sense, and how to research.

Education should be teaching students why it is so important to ask questions and to research instead of accepting everything as truth.

Recently, I learned that one school wants to remove historical information prior to World War II because it is seen as irrelevant. At this time in our country, we are told to trust the Obama (or whomever becomes elected) Administration, the FDA, the USDA, and the American Medical Association. Collectively, the media instructs people to not question, but to simply trust. Is that what we want our students to learn as well?

Successfully teaching children requires the teachers, students, and families to be involved in the educational process. What is being taught? How is it being taught? Is it working? A simple standardized test does not adequately measure whether learning has occurred, because different students learn differently. That means different students will test differently.

Even with quality instruction in place, there also needs to be quality support and nutrition at home. If there is not quality support at home, that can result in a student feeling unsupported, fearful, and desiring attention-even negative attention.

To See What Your Neighbor's Place Sold For and Possibly Lower Your Property Taxes In real estate, the value of your home is largely driven by what is similar or how much nearby homes have sold for. If you search your address, Trulia will first surface some sort of image of your home, a map, the basic property details from the public records (see No. 5, below), and recent sales data for your own home before listing out the comps --homes with similar numbers of beds, baths and square feet near yours, and what they recently sold for. If you see a pattern of homes selling for lower than your home's assessed value, you can use those comps to petition your county to lower your own property taxes!

5. To See Your Home's Property Records Your home's records online are populated from the public records about your home, which are either so old they don't include upgrades and additions, or they're just flat out wrong. If you Google your address, or search for it on Trulia, and find that your home's description is riddled with errors, contact your county public record agency to correct them and edit your home facts on Trulia.

This is particularly important if you're planning to sell your home anytime soon.

6. To See Your Home's Google Street View When you're selling your home, it's especially critical to see everything that prospective home buyers will see. That means checking out how your home's listing looks on all the online real estate sites (yes, even on Trulia), checking out the flyer -- even stopping by to check out any staging your broker or agent did if you've already moved out. One thing even the most savvy sellers don't check out is the way Google Street View depicts your home. If you're about to sell your home, and you notice that the street view is outdated, mention it to your agent, and ask them to make a note of that fact in the listing information.

The emotional stress could be the unexpected death of a loved one. An EKG shows a pattern that replicates the pattern of a heart attack. The heart’s function is greatly compromised. It doesn’t pump blood like it should, and that can lower blood pressure. Seizures are not included in the list of symptoms. However, a drop in blood pressure also drops the flow of blood to the brain. That can trigger seizures.

aby, it’s hot outside! The recent heat wave has increased the need to replenish your body and avoid heat exhaustion. Sweating is the body’s way of naturally cooling itself. Keep in mind that your body is actually losing fluids as you sweat, so it is important to replace them. Water makes up about 60 percent of your body’s weight and is an important part of many body processes. Besides helping to regulate body temperature, water is present in every cell in the body and helps protect some body tissues. Water also helps to transport nutrients and aides with the elimination of bodily waste.

By the time you become thirsty, you may have already lost 2 percent of your body fluids. Mild dehydration is when you have lost 2 percent to 5 percent of your body fluids. Symptoms of mild dehydration include thirst, dry mouth and throat, rapid pulse, low blood pressure, weakness or a lack of energy, and reduced quantity of urine. When there is a fluid loss of more than 5 percent, the body has severe reactions that include pale skin; bluish fingertips and lips; rapid, shallow breathing; weak, irregular pulse; and confusion or disorientation. It can result in shock, seizures, coma and death.

A person who burns about 2,000 calories should get about 8 to 12 cups of fluid per day. (Most women burn less than 2,000 calories, while men working outside would burn more.) That might sound like a lot to drink, but it doesn’t all have to come from drinking water. Many of the foods we eat contain a high percentage of water, and that counts as a portion of the 8 to 12 cups of needed fluid. Hydrating foods such as celery, cucumber, lettuce and summer squash are 90 percent to 95 percent water. Grapefruit, strawberries, broccoli and tomato are 90 percent to 94 percent water, and milk, yogurt, egg whites, fruit juices, apples and carrots are 80 percent to 89 percent water. Keep slices of watermelon, honeydew, cantaloupe and other such water-packed fruits in the refrigerator. They are excellent sources of water, sugar and electrolytes, and the perfect “grab and go” refresher on a hot summer’s day.

Keep in mind that the thirst mechanism can become weak in senior citizens, so they may need to implement a way of assuring they drink enough water. Some people fill a pitcher with six or so cups of water in the morning and make sure that they drink the entire contents by the time they go to bed. At the other end of the life span are children, who often ignore thirst cues. It is important to assure they are drinking enough fluids, especially if they’re

playing outdoors. A good gauge of hydration is the color of their urine. A dark-yellow color is an indicator they are not drinking enough fluids.

Just remember that if the weather is hot and you’re sweating, that precious fluid needs to be replaced. Next time you venture out into the heat, don’t forget to pack a bottle full of this Fruity Sports Drink, or take along a package of the Homemade Powdered Sports Drink to add to your bottle of water!

FRUITY SPORTS DRINK Using natural fruit juices adds both natural sugars and vitamins to your sports drink. Adding sea salt instead of table salt adds an electrolyte source, as the minerals of the sea are very similar to the electrolyte composition in our blood. Sea salt contains 84 minerals, including sodium, potassium, iodine, magnesium, calcium, zinc, manganese and helps to replenish the minerals you lose through perspiration.

1/2 can (3 ounces) frozen, unsweetened orange juice 2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice 1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lime juice 3/4 teaspoon sea salt 2 quarts water Using a large pitcher, mix all of the ingredients together until thoroughly combined. Refrigerate and stir to recombine before serving. Makes 2 quarts.

HOMEMADE POWDERED SPORTS DRINK 9 tablespoons organic or raw sugar 3/8 teaspoon sea salt 1 packet unsweetened powdered fruit-drink mix Mix together the sugar, salt and powdered fruit drink until wellcombined. Place 1/3 of the mixture into each of three small resealable bags.

To reconstitute, add the contents of 1 bag to a 20-ounce sports bottle. Fill the bottle halfway with water, close and shake to mix.

Fill the rest of the bottle with water and shake to mix again.

Alternately, add half the powdered drink to a 20-ounce bottle of water. Replace cap and shake to mix. Add the rest of the powdered drink, replace cap, and shake to mix. Makes 3 servings.

New DVD Releases for Week of August 15, 2011 PICKS OF THE WEEK

“Jane Eyre” (PG-13) -- A young woman in Victorian England, plain in appearance, leaves a troubled past behind and finds herself in the employ of a charming and complicated man. It’s another in a long series of adaptations of Charlotte Bronte’s novel, and this one stands out among the rest.

The pace of the film is handled with care, but keeps in mind that motion pictures just don’t have time like novels do. The story has quite a few twists and turns as the tides change for the protagonist, yet the film still takes the

“That’s What I Am” (PG) -- This comingof-age dramedy set in mid-’60s America tackles issues of tolerance, determination and principles. The story follows the trials of Andy, a fairly typical 12-year-old boy, as he sets his sights on his first crush. When wise, compassionate eighth-grade teacher, Mr. Simon (Ed Harris) pairs Andy with the class reject -- a lanky, awkward red-haired boy called “Big-G,” lessons are learned all around.

It’s a touching family movie that is nothing short of a full-on surprise from World Wrestling Entertainment Productions. You may recognize a wrestler trying on a dramatic role, and holding it up well enough. But Harris does the real heavy lifting, as he puts even-handed wisdom in a suplex and breaks

a chair over the head of adolescent issues.

“Priest” (R) -- In an alternate world where mankind has been at war with vampires since the beginning, the Priests are an elite vampkilling order established by the church. Well, they’re not vampires so much as slimy, eyeless, computer-animated reptiles that don’t do well in sunlight. For a movie that has no problem playing fast and loose with rules for vampires and priests, it sure doesn’t take any chances trying to be original in any other way. The characters, the dialogue, the plotline, and especially the setting are all straight-faced, unapologetic, 100 percent recycled material.

Naturally, a second marriage will bring many changes to your life — not the least of which may be changes in your financial strategy and goals.

In fact, your remarriage should cause you to take a close look at these areas: Past financial obligations — Before even discussing your investments, you and your new spouse should decide how to handle past financial obligations such as child support, alimony and debts. Consider temporarily managing three accounts – his, hers and ours – to keep track of these various payments.

Retirement accounts — You and your new spouse may want to examine your respective retirement accounts — such as your 401(k)s and Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs) — to determine if there are areas of duplication that you may wish to avoid. If you both have the same types of investments, you may be more susceptible to downturns that primarily affect one industry or economic sector. By diversifying your holdings, you can reduce the effects of volatility on your portfolios. Keep in mind, though, that diversification cannot guarantee a profit or protect against loss.

Insurance — Evaluate your medical insurance plans to decide which policy is more economical and comprehensive for you, your spouse and any dependents. You may also want to review disability insurance to ensure appropriate coverage is in place. Also, review life insurance policies and update beneficiaries and coverage.

Income taxes — When you consult with your tax professional to discuss the tax implications related to your marriage, be sure to adjust your tax withholding on Form W 4 to reflect your marital status. You may also want to discuss whether your Social Security benefits will be impacted if you remarry and are under age 60.

Estate considerations — Remarriage almost certainly will require you to work with a legal advisor to make changes to the following: will, living will, durable power of attorney, health care power of attorney and trust. If you have children, this step is critical toward ensuring your wishes will be carried out. You can also speak with your legal advisor if you are considering a prenuptial or postnuptial agreement.

And perhaps above all else, you need to communicate effectively with your new spouse about your respective ideas on managing finances and investments. To develop a joint investment strategy that addresses your goals and your individual differences, you may want to consult with a financial professional.

Your remarriage can be a joyous occasion. And by making sure you and your new spouse are “on the same page� with regard to your financial situation and goals, you can make a positive contribution to your new life together.

ANATOMY OF A DIVORCE CASE Part 2

T

his article continues the overview of a typical divorce case. The case has been filed, and the respondent has been served with the summons and a copy of the petition. A response to the petition has been filed, and an initial status conference has been held.

The parties have 40 days after the filing of the petition to prepare and exchange financial information such as financial affidavits, pay stubs, and tax returns.

The parties may request a temporary orders hearing. Temporary orders may be necessary if the parties cannot agree on how to handle matters pending the resolution (final orders) of the case.

The court may require the parties to try to settle their temporary differences before it will grant a temporary orders hearing. Most cases do not require a temporary orders hearing.

However, the Court must wait 90 days from the filing of the petition and service on the respondent before it can issue final orders.

The procedure you must follow to get a divorce is the same as other law. You must remember that: you may not understand the law; you may not like it; and you may not think its fair; but it’s the law!
