YOU KNOW ABOUT THE GALLUP POLL? by Deborah Stumpf

ISSUE 517 • SEPTEMBER 26, 2011

“If democracy is supposed to be based on the will of the people, then somebody should go out and find out what that will is.” - George Gallup

W

hether you’re a believer in “the polls” or not, the Gallup Poll is inarguably the most respected in the country and likely the world. We can’t seem to get through a newspaper or a television news program that doesn’t cite the Gallup Poll and what people are thinking about most any topic, but mainly those of politics, economics, social issues and wellbeing. No subject is too controversial for a Gallup Poll and the company conducts 1,000 interviews by telephone each day.

Gallup was a man of integrity. He accepted no paid polling by any special interest group including any political party. These values are still ingrained in the organization today and undoubtedly are keys to its credibility and success of the Gallup Organization.

The Gallup Poll... Continued from Page 1 The Gallup Organization has four divisions: Gallop Poll, Gallup Press, Gallup Consulting and Gallup University. The company’s corporate offices are based in Washington, D.C. and operational headquarters are in Omaha, Neb.

THE DEFINING POLL

GEORGE GALLUP

Gallup founded the American Institute of Public Opinion in 1935. His first public opinion poll asked “Do you think expenditures by the government for relief and recovery are too little, too great or about right?” The results were published in his syndicated column, America Speaks: 60 percent said “too great,” 31 percent said “about right” and 9 percent said “too little.” Some things never change.

George Gallup, founder of the Gallop Poll, was born in 1901 in Iowa. He studied at the University of Iowa and his dissertation for his Ph.D. in Psychology was called “An Objective Method for Determining Reader Interest in the Content of a Newspaper.” He used scientific methods to defend his thesis and continued to use scientific methods to pursue his passion of listening to people and studying their opinions.

Gallup became the name on the research map when he successfully predicted Franklin Roosevelt’s defeat of Alfred Landon in the 1936 U.S. presidential election. “Literary Digest,” the respected poll at that time, had predicted Landon would walk away with a landslide win.

In 1932, Raymond Rubicam lured Gallup to New York to head the start up of the first ever research department within an advertising agency at Young & Rubicam. Here Gallup continued to hone his sharp research skills.

The Gallup Poll has enjoyed tremendous success when it comes to predicting U.S. presidential elections, but is not without blunders entirely. Gallup, as did other pollsters, predicted Thomas Dewey the winner of the 1948 election. However, Harry S. Truman caused an upset that year. Gallup and other polling organizations stopped polling weeks prior to the election, neglecting to factor in the third-party voters who would ally with Truman at the polls. Undaunted by this failure, Gallop said: “As long as public opinion is important in this country, and until someone finds a better way of appraising it – I intend to go right ahead with the task of reporting the opinions of the people on issues vital to their welfare.” In 1976, the Gallop Poll predicted GerThe Gallup Poll... ald Ford would win by at least a slim margin. Jimmy Carter had other plans, toppling Ford by a small margin. After the fact, the size of the margin means nothing.

WHO GETS THE CALL? The Gallup Poll started by using a surveying format based on sampling the “man in the street and canvassing door-to-door. Today, methods are more sophisticated and conducted via telephone. Simply stated, based on laws of statistics that say a random sampling of a certain amount of people or things can represent the whole of a population, Gallup uses telephone samples referred to as directory-assisted random-digit-dial (RDD) telephone numbers. A computer randomly generates the numbers, both listed and unlisted, for calling. The caller will ask the respondent to speak with the person in the house who is over the age of 18 and has had the most recent birthday. Typical sample size is 1,000 respondents and the data obtained is then broken down into subgroups for analysis. About 350,000 calls are made per year, representing more than 105 million households in the U.S. Although the number in each sample is small relative to the size of the whole population, the Gallup methods of analysis ensures that every adult is represented in the sample – race, gender, religion, etc. Each sample is also new so that everyone has an equal chance of being called upon to give an opinion every day.

GALLOP GOES GLOBAL In the late 1930s, Gallup reached out beyond America’s borders to begin the Gallup International Research Institute, an organization that polled people around the world about matters such as capitalism, religion, world hunger, the atomic bomb and more. Worldwide polls continue to be conducted today in 140 countries. Questions asked include a core group and then regional depending on the citizens’ locations.

In 1958, Gallup organized all of his business endeavors into one, called The Gallup Organization. After he died in 1984, the company was sold to Selection Research Inc. in 1988. SRI was owned by psychologist Don Clifton. Gallup and wife Ophelia Smith Miller had two sons, Alec and George Gallup III, and daughter Julia Gallup Laughlin. any people are experiencing change right now. That may be change in their work, personal relationships, or in attempting to find joy in their own life. Sometimes, it can seem difficult to determine what changes to make and when. It can seem difficult to determine which steps to take and when. When a person desires change and is making change, but is not sure in which direction to move, that person needs to first reflect on past choices. Only when past choices have been examined can a person understand which new choices to make. Past choices need to be examined with the purpose of examining the past intent of those choices. Intent is the building block to the outcome. When a person wants to know what his or her intent was, look at the outcome. When a person wants to know what an outcome of a choice will be, look at the intent. The intent will always create the outcome. This occurs because when a person holds the intent in his or her mind (conscious or subconscious), it is energy. It is with that energy that creates the events that determine the outcome of the choice.

away from home to leave his or her past behind in order to forget the past, it does not work. The energy from past events does not simply go away, they stay with the person. The person continues to experience similar events from the past, but with different people and in different locations.

When a person desires change and is making change, it is also important to examine the support system or the lack of a support system. A person who wants to change may need a support system. That is people who support that person’s change unconditionally and do not attempt to hinder it for whatever reason. Sometimes, people find themselves acquainted or friendly with people who tend to sabotage other people’s attempt at change. That can occur for various reasons, but the person desiring change needs to be willing to examine that and to choose wisely.

If a support system is in place, the person needs to nurture it or honor it. During times of change, that person also needs to understand and integrate self-respect and self-honor. Many people are not taught selfrespect, but rather taught how to do for others. If a person is unfamiliar with true self-respect, find a person who can teach it.

Another tool for change is Life Energy Flow Tai Yi. In Tai Yi, a treatment titled Book of Change is offered as an advanced treatment. This treatment works with the mind, body, and emotions to create clarity to determine in which order change needs to be created. When change is created out of order, imbalance occurs and the positive change halts. Creating change is a step-by-step process and it is important to understand and honor the process in order to create positive change.

• On Sept. 27, 1854, two ships collide off the coast of Newfoundland, killing 322 passengers and crew. The wooden-hulled Arctic was severely damaged when it slammed into the iron-hulled steamer Vesta. In trying to beach the ship, the Arctic’s captain ran over several lifeboats, causing even more people to drown. • On Oct. 1, 1890, an act of Congress creates Yosemite National Park, home of such natural wonders as the 2,425-foot-high Yosemite Falls, rock formations Half Dome and El Capitan, and three groves of giant sequoias, the world’s biggest trees. • On Sept. 28, 1938, auto inventor Charles Duryea dies in Philadelphia at the age of 76. Duryea and his brother Frank designed and built one of the first functioning gas-powered automobiles. Charles insisted on taking full credit for the brothers’ innovation and said that Frank was “simply a mechanic.” • On Sept. 26, 1957, “West Side Story,” composed by Leonard Bernstein, opens at

the Winter Garden Theatre on Broadway. “West Side Story,” a reinterpretation of William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, tells the tale of a love affair between Tony, who is Polish American, and Maria, a Puerto Rican, set against an urban background of interracial warfare.

The case against the Green Berets was dismissed for reasons of national security when the CIA refused to release highly classified information. • On Oct. 2, 1985, Rock Hudson, a Hollywood romantic leading man during the 1950s and ‘60s and later a TV star, dies at the age of 59 from an AIDS-related illness. The 6-foot-5 Hudson rose to fame starring in such films as “Giant” (1956), for which he received an Academy Award nomination. • On Sept. 30, 1999, large doses of radiation are released at Japan’s Tokaimura nuclear plant, an accident caused by a serious error made by workers at the plant. Instead of pouring 5 pounds of powdered uranium into nitric acid, workers poured in 35 pounds.

Scientists hoped to learn whether leisure-time physical activity at a younger age had anything to do with the status of physical strength in later years. The participants were contacted more than 20 times for updated information, checked at ages 36, 43, and 53 and tested for standing balance, how long it took to rise up out of a chair, and grip strength.

The conclusion was that yes indeed, physical activity does affect the status of our physical strength and performance later in life. Cooler weather is coming, with winter right behind. Consider signing up for some type of physical activity class, something fun, that meets on a regular basis. We can’t go back and give ourselves a more active youth, but we can start now to give ourselves a stronger future, right? or fewer years unless a new valve is put in place. Surgery is usually performed well before these signs make their appearance. You might never need a correction if the narrowing process stops.

KNOW THE SIGNS OF HEART VALVE TROUBLE DEAR DR. DONOHUE: For the past five years I have known that I have aortic stenosis. I have no symptoms and no restrictions on what I do. My doctor says I need no treatment. I’m happy about that. Will I have a shortened life? I’m 55. --- S.B. ANSWER: “Stenosis” indicates narrowing. The aortic valve closes when the heart pumps blood out and into the aorta and the entire body. Closure of the valve stops blood from leaking back into the heart. Because the valve and its opening have constricted, the heart has to pump harder to empty itself. That strains the heart, and, in time, leads to heart failure. Stenosis is relative. Its danger and its consequences depend on how narrow are the opening and valve. Doctors can get an accurate picture of the valve’s dimensions through an echocardiogram, a sound wave picture of the heart. When the valve and its opening reach a critical size, decisions are made about the best treatment. Often, it’s surgery with the installation of an artificial valve. If a severely narrowed valve goes untreated, three symptoms develop: chest pain on activity (angina), shortness of breath and fainting spells. Death occurs within three

You probably wonder how you acquired the valve problem. You might have been born with a valve that had minor defects, which promoted narrowing. Calcifications could have settled on the valve. Or you might have had rheumatic fever as a child, which caused valve deformity. The booklet on heart-valve disorders gives a comprehensive view on these valves and their treatment. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 105W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. ***

HOW IS YOUR DIGESTION DOING?

P

oor digestion is a common problem, yet many people have no clue if that is an issue for them or not. If they do know it is a problem, even fewer know how to address it. Signs of poor digestion can include: heartburn, acid reflux, burping, or belching diarrhea or constipation bloating or gas weight gain headaches joint pain or inflammation anxiety Does that sound like most of America? All food is a protein, fat, carbohydrate

or DEAD stuff. The DEAD stuff (white flour, white sugar, food dyes, chemicals - - found in boxes like miniature coffins) should simply be eliminated. Your body can’t digest them and they just rot, ferment and smell . . . well you get the picture.

Protein, Carbohydrates and Fats When a person is not digesting protein, it is common to experience constipation, cold hands/feet, bleeding gums and fluid retention. Poor digestion of carbohydrates can reflect in dry mouth/ nose/ eyes, weak muscles, inability to concentrate or swallow, and inability to handle stress. Poor digestion of fats can show in dry skin, hair loss, hormone imbalances, elevated cholesterol, infertility and light-headedness. Here are some simple strategies that can help you address your digestive challenge:

Check for adequate amounts of hydrocholoric acid (HCL) in the stomach. Mix 1 TBL of cider vinegar with 2 TBL of water and drink 20 minutes after a meal. If you feel better, this is an indicator that you have too little HCL and this little ‘cocktail’ will become your best friend. If you feel worse (less common reaction), than you need a digestive enzyme. Drink less during meals. Drinking large amounts of fluid during a meal dilutes the saliva and digestive juices and can slow down digestion. Chew! Chewing your flood slowly helps mix saliva with the food and enhance digestion.

Digestive Enzymes to the rescue! More results came to our clients with digestive enzymes than any one other support we use. When you have the right one, the difference is usually within one meal or a few days! Enhancing digestion is our specialty – normally we charge $75 for a digestive assessment and personalized game plan. During this month our Snippetz readers can get that service for $25/person or $40/couple. To take advantage of this special, call our LFH Office at 719-4885688 and mention Snippetz!

o there it was. After an up and down summer of blistering heat and devastating rain came autumn. And with the seasons change, I resume the task of telling Tri-Lakes citizens what is happening in the world of local High School sports. After a couple of State Titles by Lewis-Palmer, and a few breakthrough seasons by the up-andcoming Palmer Ridge in 2010-2011, the two district 38 schools should be excited for the year ahead. But the community has one new annual ritual coming soon, that will create a lot of excitement itself‌

Orange and Black Attack The Lewis-Palmer Rangers are the product of a man; his name is Coach Ramunno. He’s been the leader of this team for over 20 years. Last year, the Rangers were a red hot 8-2 entering the playoffs. They were one of the top seeds in 3A High School Football. Leading rusher Colton Goeas had a 1500+ yard season, and the Rangers seemed destined for a State appearance. But alas, the Rangers rally ended in a blowout playoff loss to Glenwood Springs. This year, the Rangers seemed hungry for blood. They opened there season in a home game romping of Woodland Park, 62-26. They followed that with another impressive 35-12 win on the road at Sand Creek. But, once again, a Ranger collapse occurred. The boys came out at, losing their third game of the season 7-34. This begs the question, can the Rangers keep it close? Nine of 13 games in the 2010 season Lewis-Palmers games were decided by 12 points or more. What will happen when a game stays close? Can the Rangers rally a 4th quarter comeback? Can they hold a win in a tight battle? They’re 2-1 now, the close games are bound to come, and Coach Ramunno will give us the answers when they do.

The Bear-rier Between Winning and Losing Three years ago, when Palmer Ridge was formed, they needed a football coach. They chose a man with fire, an assistant to the Rangers’ Ramunno. And though his voice was always the loudest on the practice field of the Rangers, it’s now the only voice that matters on the field of Bears; the voice of Coach Gutowski. The Bears have started the 2011 campaign like the Rangers, 2-1. A road win at Harrison and home opening thriller against Elizabeth have the Bears feeling high. The Bears have started the season strong, but it’s not the first time. Coach Gutowski has something to prove, along with his varsity boy’s team that has seen two consecutive season collapses. In 2009, the Bears shocked the community by winning 4 of their first 5 games ever. They followed with just opposite; dropping 4 of the last 5. The next season, the Bears were sitting pretty at 6-2. The playoffs seemed inevitable, and a deep run likely. But once again, Palmer Ridge fell apart, dropping their last 3 games, and sputtering out in the postseason. Questions about the future arose. OKTOBER, WITH A K By Nicholas Yanez

Round II

So there it is. The Lewis-Palmer Rangers and Palmer Ridge Bears are both 2-1. They are equal, as of now. They each have another game before putting on their colors, pulling out the student bodies, and renewing a one-year old rivalry. Last year, despite the halftime lead, hype, and painted horse, the Rangers got the 25-10 victory. This year, on October 7th, 2011 at Don Breese Stadium, starting at 7:00pm, blue, gold, orange, and black will splatter across a canvas of turf. Two coaches, formerly teammates, will collide in a battle of strategy and guts. They’ll hope to stick it to the critics, and answer any questions that have been asked of their teams. Turning questions into silly derogatory comments of the past; questions we’ll never ask again. et’s face it, we live in America. We like McDonalds and Ford and football. We love television, movie stars, and Independence. We also love beer. So, in that love, is it so wrong to take a small break from all of our patriotic holidays and steal a foreign one? No it’s not, is the emphatic answer your lips are quivering for. Oktober Fest is a German thing, no doubt. But here in America, we can still celebrate like they do across the sea. This is why Pinz Bowling Center and with Rodz Bar and Grill present Oktober Fast! It’s a week filled with beer and buffoonery. Beginning Monday, October 3rd, Rodz Bar and Grill will begin celebrating its favorite foreign affair. Throughout the week, patrons can sample different Oktober beers at Rodz, served by the beautiful women that represent their brand. October 6th has been scheduled as Coors day. Other beers and

13

dates are still to be named. But the main event, if you will, is October 8th. That day is the Oktober Fast car show! The Rodz parking lot will fill with classic and new cars. Drink specials will be about, and Music will fill the air. There’ll be a car bash and garden tractor (going not-so-fast) pull. These things will bring you enjoyment; good ol’ American enjoyment. Because despite the foreign inuence, Rodz will be doing the most patriotic thing of all - being charitable. Proceeds from the event will benefit Animal Rescues in the Tri-Lakes Area through Sundance Kennels. Think about it‌ You’ll be drinking beer, looking at great cars, destroying not-sogreat ones, all while being pulled by a garden tractor thinking ‘I’m saving a puppy right now’. That sounds like a good day in America; a good day in October. For more information on Oktober Fast, a week-long celebration of gloriousness presented by Rodz and Pinz, call the center at (719) 487-7469

SNIPPETZ DINING GUIDE ®

The Kitchen Diva by Angela Shelf Medearis

GLUTEN-FREE AND EASY AS CAN BE! “Gluten-free” is a term now appearing on food labels and often mentioned in health articles, but many people don’t know what gluten is or why finding a gluten-free product is so important for some shoppers. My daughter, Deanna, was recently diagnosed as being gluten intolerant. Since she loves bread and pasta, this news was a big adjustment for her. I try to plan family meals with her condition in mind. Educating yourself about gluten is one of the best ways to make the correct food choices.

Because gluten is found in wheat, rye, barley and sometimes oats, anyone with gluten intolerance should avoid these grains and any products that contain them. In addition, foods that might come into contact with these grains or gluten also should not be consumed. If you are looking for gluten-free foods, start by reading the ingredients list on food labels to determine if they are gluten-free -- or made without gluten. Identifying glutenfree products involves more than just looking for the words wheat, rye, barley, oats or buckwheat. Wheat also might be called durum, farina or semolina; gluten also can be found in additives, seasonings and flavorings. And a food originally gluten-free can come into contact with equipment contaminated with gluten or might be processed in an area that contains gluten. Finding gluten-free foods may seem like an impossible task, but once you know what to look for, shopping is a breeze. Always read labels to make sure each recipe ingredient is gluten-free. Products and ingredient sources can change.

Gluten is a protein found in the grains wheat, rye and barley. Oats also may contain gluten due to cross-contamination, which means they have come into contact with gluten during processing. When baking, gluten helps give structure, texture and strength to baked foods, such as bread.

This recipe for Mocha Chocolate Brownies is a modern version of a family favorite using gluten-free convenience ingredients.

Most people can eat gluten, but in some people, gluten causes damage to the small intestine, making it hard to get nutrients out of food and into the body. When nutrients can’t get into the body, a person can become malnourished.

Dark, rich instant coffee enhances the flavor of the chocolate brownie. The secret to cutting perfect bars is to line the pan with foil so you can lift out the baked bars. Spray the foil as directed in the recipe.

This reaction to gluten is a genetic disorder called glutensensitive enteropathy, celiac disease or gluten intolerance. Symptoms can be different from person to person and can be confused with symptoms of other health problems. People of any age can develop gluten intolerance, but the disease usually is diagnosed in adults, about 10 years after symptoms first appear. The only treatment is lifelong avoidance of gluten. Once gluten is removed from the diet, the small intestine begins to heal, symptoms disappear and nutrients can once again get into the body.

New DVD Releases for Week of Sept. 26, 2011 PICKS OF THE WEEK

“Carlos” (R) -- Venezuelan-born terrorist Ilich Ramirez Sanchez eluded capture for 30 years before being arrested in 1994, and according to the five-hour long thriller/biopic “Carlos,” there wasn’t a dull or irrelevant moment. It’s scary to think that somebody could evade justice for so long, and mesmerizing to see a movie keep up the pace for such a long runtime. Changing settings, changing times and a steadily unfolding character, played by Edgar Ramirez (“The Bourne Ultimatum”), keep

things from sagging. The film offers an immersive look into the Cold War era of international crime and terrorism, all magnificently framed by one egomaniac’s climb to fame. No true cinephile could turn away from this engaging epic. “Good Neighbors” (R) -- In a neighborhood terrorized by a serial killer who takes his victims off the streets, three neighbors rally together for support, only to realize that true danger could be sitting at the table with them. This Canadian thriller keeps a tight focus on its three main performers with crushing suspense and pitch-black humor. Far from a formulaic whodunit, “Good Neighbors” keeps viewers squirming with crafty writing and layered performances. Things shift from oddly funny to downright gruesome in such a way that may put off some audiences -- but for the brave, there is a serious gem of close-to-home noir.

DOG OF THE WEEK

“The Ledge” (R) -- In an attempt to jump-

start a dialog about faith and atheism, “The Ledge” delivers a dull thud of melodrama. Gavin (Charlie Hunnam of “Sons of Anarchy”) stands on the ledge of a highrise, contemplating a jump that would end his life but save his lover’s. But as the story behind the situation unfolds, this opening tension turns out to be a weak conceit. Gavin is an atheist. His lover, Shana (Liv Tyler), is married to a devout and controlling Christian man (Patrick Wilson.) Gavin and Shana have sex scenes, then her husband gets very upset. On the ledge, Gavin gives stump speeches for the film’s philosophical core, but the movie fails to filibuster its way out of being a half-baked snooze.

The titular episode for this DVD release sees the characters learning about the complicated impasse of being torn between two best friends, quite an adventure for a boy, a silly shape-shifting dog and a magic unicorn-like creature who only speaks Korean.

IN 1752, BENJAMIN FRANKLIN DISCOVERED ELECTRICITY IN A FIELD. IN 1935, WE WERE CALLED UPON TO GET IT THERE. Supplying electricity to rural America didn’t happen overnight. It took vision, cooperation and determination. Today, as a member of an electric co-op, it’s your turn to influence the future by saving energy. Learn how at TogetherWeSave.com.

Missing the Fine Print If you change homeowner's insurance, be sure to read the fine print of your new policy. Does it require you to get a home inspection and repairs or improvements made before your policy takes effect? If you have to spend $400 for a home inspection, and another $4000 in repairs in order to get covered by the new insurance company, you are definitely not saving with the switch. Does the new insurer require you to have a particular type of roofing? Does your pit bull pass the dangerousdog-screening? You may find yourself on the wrong end of a cancellation letter in a few months if your insurer decides to audit your account and finds you outside of their guidelines. One local builder switched insurance companies in order to save a few bucks recently. When warranty items came up on previously built homes, he realized that the new company couldn't cover the previous projects, and his old insurance company couldn't cover them because he cancelled his old policies in order to switch. Saving a few bucks turned into a huge loss! So, you can never be too careful when you decide to switch insurance companies. The lure of a cheaper premium

may not be as wonderful as you initially thought. Many insurance companies may not even want you back as a customer if you decide to abandon them in search of a cheaper deal elsewhere. You may also be in a plan that would not be available to you anymore if you cancel and then try to re-instate. You have to double check the fine print and have your ducks in a row before you cancel your current policy. And be very careful to never cancel your current insurance policy before you have the new one in place. With a little prior planning and some research, you should be able to steer yourself away from a cheaper insurance policy that may cost you dearly in the end. Then just research, research, research! If you find a better rate, don't be embarrassed to sit down with your current insurer and say, "I have to save money right now. I found a better rate. Tell me why I shouldn't switch." And then really listen to their reasoning. They may or may not be able to beat your new price or coverage. But they may also give you a lot more facts that you can consider before making this very important decision. Switching insurance companies is not something you want to do without considering all the facts.

There are two steps to taking insurance photos: what easily can be seen, and what’s hidden. Stand in the middle of each room and take photos in a circle around you. That’s the easy part. The next step involves opening closet doors and drawers and taking pictures of the contents. Your best bet is to have the camera set on the largest photo it will take, often larger than 3000 by 2000 pixels. The reason is that you’ll be able to take photos of the back of electronics, such as televisions and stereos, or the bottom of collectibles such as china, and have the model and serial numbers available when you blow up the photo. Don’t forget to inventory the contents of your garage or attic, as well as any sheds on your property. Photograph the exterior of your home and your vehicles. Another method is to use a video camera, but be sure your aim is steady. Still photos are preferable, as studying each one will allow you to clearly see which items you also need to add to your paper inventory list. PAPER: Print out online (or get from your insurance agent) an inventory form to jog your memory about what you own and need to document. List each item. Receipts are likely stored with your warranty information, but you’ll need them for any claims of loss. Receipts will show the date of purchase as well as the cost. Keep everything in a bank box or another safe location: A copy of the memory card with your inventory photos (or the photos themselves), copy of insurance policies and your paper inventories.
