THE SESAME WORKSHOP The Sesame Workshop is the nonprofit organization behind the hit show, Sesame Street. The Sesame Workshop strives to make a difference in the lives of children around the world by focusing on their developmental needs. The Sesame Workshop provides educational experiences for children by presenting

them in interactive and engaging ways, such as television, books, radio and community programs.

FAMOUS GUESTS

The Sesame Workshop was founded 38 years ago under the name “Children’s Television Workshop.” The founders were comprised of psychologists, researchers, educations, artists, writers and child development experts who shared a common goal of making learning a fun experience through the use of television. The group’s leaders strived to incorporate educational material into children’s programming that would reach disadvantaged youth. Through this collaboration and effort, Sesame Street was born.

Many famous celebrities have made an appearance on Sesame Street throughout the years. Although the children watching the show might not know what the person visiting Sesame Street is famous for, their parents and caretakers do. The addition of celebrities to Sesame Street adds appeal for moms and dads who watch the show with their children. The guest list of who’s who on Sesame Street is quite extensive, with over 500 celebrities making an appearance. Some famous men and women who have visited include:

Street that the show’s creators decided that if he wouldn’t get on board with the idea that they would have to do without the puppets while just using human actors. It’s a good thing that Jim Henson liked the idea of Sesame Street… can you imagine the show without the loveable Muppets? Cookie Monster was originally drawn by Jim Henson for a General Foods commercial in 1966. The commercial was never used but one of the monsters was used in an IBM training video in 1967 and appeared in a Fritos commercial in 1969. At this time, Jim Henson had started working on characters for Sesame Street and decided that this messy, cookie-loving monster would move in. Elmo was originally just an extra red puppet lying around. Show producers and writers often tried to fit him in the show, but nothing seemed just right. Finally, in 1984, puppeteer Kevin Clash picked up the puppet and started doing the voice. The rest was history. Many people think Bert and Ernie were named for characters from “It’s A Wonderful Life,” but according to Jim Henson, that is merely a rumor. Jim Henson always said that it was just a coincidence and that the names went well together. Jerry Juhl, one of the head writers for Sesame Street, said that Jim Henson had no memory for details like that and would have never remembered the name of the police officer and cab driver from the movie. The cute furry monster named Grover appeared on the “Ed Sullivan Show” in 1967. When he appeared

ADVANCED PRODUCTION STUDENTS TO FILM RAY BRADBURY’S “JACK IN THE BOX”

• In the first season, Oscar the Grouch was orange. • In 1970, the single, “Rubber Duckie” was released. It reached #16 on the Billboard chart.

S

tudents from the Colorado Film School will be starting production this weekend on an adaptation of Ray Bradbury’s short story “Jack in the Box”.

• Contrary to popular belief, Big Bird is NOT a canary. He’s a Golden Condor. • It takes two puppeteers to manipulate Ernie, Rosita, The Count, Cookie Monster, Oscar the Grouch, Telly Monster and Snuffleupagus; while 8’ 2’’ Big Bird only requires one puppeteer.

The movie will be shot locally at the historical Estemere Estate in Palmer Lake, CO. “Jack in the Box” is a beautiful story of a young boy, Edwin, as he comes to grips with the concepts of life within the world that his mother has created. The original short story was published by Bradbury in 1945.

• Ernie is the only Sesame Street Muppet to have a built in smile. • Currently, there are nine Elmo puppets, one of which is remote controlled.

The story was adapted for the screen by acclaimed student filmmaker Alex

• In Latin America and Puerto Rico, Grover is called “Archibaldo.” In Spain his name is “Coco” and in Norway his friends call him “Gunnar.”

Gray. Gray attained the rights to “Jack in the Box” in April 2011 and has been working on the pre-production process for several months. “Jack in the Box” will be directed by Gray, who directed the acclaimed short film “Derek”, which was prominently featured at the world famous Palm Springs short film festival. At the Colorado Film School, Gray has won several awards for his films including Best Director and Best Film of the Year. According to Gray, “Estemere Estate is the perfect place to film ‘Jack in the Box.’” Built in 1887 by William Thompson, Estemere Estate is a prominent fixture in the Palmer Lake Historical Society. The current owner, Roger Ward, is a fan of Bradbury, and has been very accommodating with Gray and his fellow students. “Jack in the Box”, is set to release in the summer of 2012. Gray and his producers will be submitting the film to several film festivals around the U.S.

LIFE ENERGY FLOW TAI YI: INDIVIDUALITY

M

any people who originally journeyed to this country desired the right to express individuality. The individual right to choose a religion, the right to own land, the right to participate in the political process, the right to have individual thought. A question to ponder is, did the right to have individual thought become watered down over time? Is it only acceptable to express individual thought as long as the majority accepts it? A wonderful blog called, To Bee or Not to Bee, What is it to Be?, written by Hossca Harrison, provokes thoughts around individuality. In the blog, he discusses how bees carry innate intelligence concerning which bees belong in which caste system, which jobs they will perform, and how to create a home. He goes on to state that many people, rather than using their innate intelligence to find their pathway, become a copy of someone else, thus losing their identity/individuality.” How does a person break out of the mold society, parents, and teachers have placed them in? How can a person begin living their innate intelligence without accepting pun-

When a person chooses to become a copy of their parents, teachers, or society, it is easy to become lost. It becomes easy for that person to feel lost in knowing what his or her pathway is, how to get on that pathway, and how to live that pathway with joy and passion.

Antiques & Collectables

Family Tradition Since 1943

Our society became a society in which popular thought is the acceptable thought. Many may use ridicule and shame to keep people from moving away from popular thought. This leads to many youth not questioning what is written in school textbooks and simply believing what they are told, even if it is incorrect. The possibility of ridicule and shame teaches people that it is simply safer for people to hide and to suppress true individuality.

When individuality is suppressed, it is then compressed, and then becomes depressed. The individual begins doubting whether it is worth it to pursue joy and that perhaps it is simply easier to survive the ‘safe’ way.

Life Energy Flow Tai Yi can assist a person in uncovering the suppressed individuality, how to express individuality, and how to live a life of joy. A qualified practitioner will discuss reasons why suppression has occurred and will choose the most appropriate treatment with which to begin the healing process.

1. The technology behind the Internet began back in the 1960’s at MIT. The first message ever to be transmitted was LOG.... The user had attempted to type LOGIN, but the network crashed after the enormous load of data of the letter G. 2. The first webcam was deployed at Cambridge University - its purpose was to monitor a coffee maker, avoiding wasted trips to an empty pot. 3. The computer in your cell phone is a million times cheaper, a thousand times more powerful, and a hundred thousand times smaller than the one computer at MIT in 1965. What used to fit in a building now fits in your pocket, what fits in your pocket now will fit inside a blood cell in the years to come. 4. Although the MP3 filetype was invented in 1991, it wouldn't be until 1998 that the first music file-sharing service, Napster, would go live and change the way the Internet was used forever. 5. 247 Billion emails are sent every day. That's 90 Trillion every year. 81% are Spam. 6. According to the Internet Society, the term “Spam” is derived from the 1970 spam sketch of the BBC television comedy series "Monty Python's Flying Circus", set in a cafe where every menu item includes Spam canned luncheon meat. As the waiter recites the menu, a chorus of Vikings drown out all conversations with a song repeating "Spam, Spam, Spam, Spam... Lovely Spam! Wonderful Spam!", hence "Spamming" the dialogue. Then in the early 1980's, companies that bulked-mailed unsolicited advertising material referred to it as "SPAM" - "Sales-Promotion-AndMarketing"... otherwise known as "Stupid-Pointless-Annoying-Messages". 7. The first ever YouTube video was uploaded on April 23rd 2005 and was a boring 18 seconds long, entitled "Me at the Zoo". 8. One in five of the world's Internet users visit YouTube every day. 9. 20 hours of video are uploaded to YouTube every minute. That's comparable to Hollywood releasing 86,000 new films every week. Over 12 Billion videos are viewed each month on YouTube. 10. In North America, 70 out of 100

people surf the Internet….and the numbers are growing. Americans make out 76.2% of the world's Internet-Population. 11. Google estimates the internet at about 5 million terabytes of data. That is 5 billion gigabytes or 5 trillion megabytes. Google claims it has only indexed a paltry .04% of it all! 12. The human brain can hold an estimated 1 to 10 terabytes of information. Using an average of 5 billion terabytes per brain, it would take one million human brains to store the internet. You could fit the whole Internet on 200 million Blu-Ray disks. 13. According to Cyber Atlas, it took just 5 years for the Internet to reach 50 million users. This same milestone took television 13 years and took radio 38 years. 14. 10 million people are watching ABC, NBC and CBS collectively every month. These businesses have been around for a combined 200 years. Yet 250 million people are going to YouTube, Facebook and MySpace collectively every month …..and none of these sites even existed 6 years ago. 15. More video was uploaded to YouTube in the last 2 months than if ABC, NBC and CBS have been airing new content 24/7/365 since 1948. 16. Social networking is the fastest growing part of the Internet. There are 70 million active users on Facebook, and more than 14 million photos are uploaded daily. 17. Technorati tracks over 133 million blogs on the Internet. 18. Nielsen Net Ratings indicates that the average Internet user will, in one month, spend 25 hours, visiting 59 domains / viewing 1,050 pages. 19. Americans has access to 1,000,000,000,000 web pages and 65,000 iPhone apps. And yet we have only 10,500 radio stations, 5500 magazines, and approximately 200 cable TV networks. In the past 5 years, newspapers are down 18.7%, magazines down 14.8%, radio down 11.7% and TV down 10.1%. 20. According to ComStore, in 2008, the United States spent $214.4 billion online. Internet purchasing is increasing at a rate of 7% per year.

• On Oct. 16, 1793, nine months after the execution of her husband, the former King Louis XVI of France, Marie-Antoinette follows him to the guillotine. At a time of economic turmoil in France, she lived extravagantly and responded to news that the French peasantry had no bread to eat by callously replying, “Let them eat cake.” • On Oct. 14, 1857, engineer and inventor Elwood Haynes is born in Portland, Ind. Haynes designed one of the very first American automobiles, the Haynes “Pioneer,” a 820-pound, open-bodied, push-start vehicle with chain drive, a steering tiller, 28-inch bicycle wheels and a one-cylinder, one-horsepower gasoline engine. It had room for only one person and could not go in reverse. • On Oct. 12, 1915, British nurse Edith Cavell is executed by a German firing squad in Brussels for helping Allied soldiers escape from German-occupied Belgium during World War I. Cavell was honored with a statue in St. Martin’s Place, just off London’s Trafalgar Square.

• On Oct. 11, 1923, in a botched robbery attempt, three men blow up the mail car of a Southern Pacific train carrying passengers through southern Oregon. The explosives the thieves intended to use to open the mail car were too powerful, and the entire mail car was blown to bits.

• On Oct. 10, 1957, the Milwaukee Braves defeat the New York Yankees in seven games to win their first World Series since 1914. No one expected the Braves to win, as the New York team had already won the championship 21 times. • On Oct. 15, 1965, David Miller, a young Catholic pacifist, becomes the first U.S. war protestor to burn his draft card in direct violation of a law forbidding such acts. He was later arrested, tried, found guilty and sentenced to two years imprisonment. • On Oct. 13, 1975, singer Charlie Rich protests John Denver’s big win at the Country Music Association Awards. Standing onstage to announce that year’s winner, Rich opened the envelope, saw Denver’s name written inside, reached into his pocket for a cigarette lighter and set the envelope on fire.

The medical journal Mayo Clinic Proceedings recently published a review of the literature to see if there was any evidence of its theory that exercise can help fight dementia. After looking at 1,600 papers, it reported that, yes, aerobic exercise “significantly reduced the risk of dementia and reduced the risk of mild cognitive impairment. Additionally, exercise helped to slow the diseases after it started.

What does this mean for us? It means that aerobic exercise, or anything that gets the heart pumping and increases the need for oxygen, results in better blood flow to the brain. Brain pathways stay open and cognitive abilities are preserved or improved. Aerobic exercise, however, doesn’t necessarily mean we need to work out at the gym. Daily walks at a rate that pumps up the heart rate a bit, swimming, seated workouts and senior fitness classes can all help. More studies need to be done, but the review of all that literature indicates that we’re on the right track if we exercise. Ask your doctor before you start anything new. condition, the body makes antibodies that stimulate the gland to produce excessive amounts of its hormone. The gland enlarges -- becomes a goiter. I don’t know of a way to treat the gland reliably without resorting to medicines or surgery. Medicines for hyperthyroidism are methimazole or PTU. The medicine chosen is taken for six months to two years and then stopped. If a person relapses, the medicine has to be restarted. Radioactive iodine is another treatment. When people hear the word “radioactive,” they cringe. In the decades and decades of its use, radioactive iodine hasn’t been responsible for cancer. The iodine makes a beeline to the gland and puts it out of commission. It’s similar to having surgery without a scalpel.

THREE WAYS TO TREAT OVERACTIVE THYROID DEAR DR. DONOHUE: My daughter was diagnosed recently with a mildly overactive thyroid gland. She is going to have another test in one month. What can be done to bring her thyroid readings to normal without taking medicine for it? What health problems are caused as a result of an overactive gland? -- M.M. ANSWER: The thyroid gland -- located in the neck -- produces thyroid hormone, a hormone with many functions. At young ages, it fosters growth. It enhances brain activity. It’s involved with the metabolism of carbohydrates and fats. It keeps body weight on the lean side. It prevents the heart from slowing down. It’s involved with the production of body heat. It keeps cell chemistry perking along at the optimum rate. Hyperthyroidism, an overactive gland, pushes all the above functions into overdrive. People lose weight in spite of eating more food. The heart races even when people are at rest. Hands tend to shake. At a room temperature comfortable for most, affected people feel hot. The eyes often bulge. Menstrual periods are thrown off their normal cycle. One of the major causes of an overactive gland is Graves disease. In this

Surgical removal of all or part of the gland is the third option for this condition.

reasons. A cough or sneeze can break one. Most of the time, people have no recollection of anything happening that caused the break. “Subconjunctival” means the leak occurred under the transparent membrane that covers the eye, the conjunctiva. By the time you read this, the splotch should have vanished.

The booklet on the thyroid gland explains both an overactive and underactive gland. To obtain a copy, write: Dr. Donohue -- No. 401W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery.

*** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: This morning, on looking into the mirror, I got a shock. My right eye has a large, red blotch on the white part. It looks like blood. I don’t have any pain, and my sight is fine. What is this? I can’t remember hitting my eye. Could I have done so during sleep? -- B.B. ANSWER: You describe a subconjunctival hemorrhage. “Hemorrhage” is far too strong a word to use here. It’s actually a small amount of blood that comes from a broken capillary, one of the tiniest and most delicate of blood vessels. Capillaries break for innocent

ecently a desperate mom called me about her 7-year old son. His behavior was off the charts and he was terrorizing kids at school and siblings at home. She was desperate! I made one suggestion for her, she tried it and she sent me a message on facebook – “This worked wonders on my son. He calmed down, went to bed, slept all night which he never does, and was pleasant the next morning. With me, I felt more in control of my emotions and everything else! What could work so effectively, easily and inexpensively? Dr. Edward Bach (1886-1936), was an

MD and a classically trained homeopath in England. By 1913, his successful medical career had led him to being a Casualty Medical OfďŹ cer at the University College Hospital in London. While working as a pathologist, he became curious as to how the flower portion of an herb might impact the brain, specifically the limbic system (the site of our emotions). The more he researched and tested his theories, the more excited he became. In 1930 he closed his practice and pursued the development of flower essence therapy - - herbal tinctures made from the flower portion of herbs. Dr. Bach went on to create 38 different remedies that are now used around the world. Bach Flower Remedies were officially recognized in the U.S. as overthe-counter homeopathic remedies in 1981. patients from around the world. Flower remedies are tinctures (liquids) you take orally. The normal dose is a dropper-full several times/day, however during stress, you can take them up to every 15 minutes. You can ďŹ nd a questionnaire on our website (www. lifestyleforhealth.com) to determine a specific Bach remedy that could help you. However, with our 7-year old, that would have been too much work for him and his mom. I simply suggested “Fields of Flowersâ€? which contains all of the 38 remedies. RETRO CASSEROLES

E

verything old is new again! Retro fashions and furnishings are all the rage, so I thought it was time to bring back a retro casserole dish. A casserole describes both the container and the contents. Casseroles have been prepared since the earliest times and can be a savory or sweet dish. Casseroles became popular in America during the Depression and grew in popularity into the 1940s. Then and now, in times of economic hardship, a casserole is the perfect way to feed a family on a budget. Cream of Mushroom Soup, was introduced in 1934 and became the “go-to” canned staple as a soup and sauce, especially in casseroles. Tuna Noodle Casserole was an old recipe popularized by the home economists at the Campbell Soup Company. The original recipe contained canned tuna (something that had been slow to gain popularity), egg noodles, hard-cooked eggs and slices of pimento cheese topped with cereal flakes that had been tossed with butter. In the 1950s, convenience was the main reason for the continuing popularity of casseroles. Modern cooks liked the ease of opening a few cans and packages to create a meal. In 1955, Campbell’s popularized Green Bean Casserole containing Cream of Mushroom soup. It continues to be a holiday favorite. When I was a new bride and college student in 1975, casseroles were a great remedy for my woefully limited cooking skills and lack of time. Today, I consider casseroles the perfect dish for a budgetfriendly meal, and a way to stock my freezer with crowd-pleasing dishes that can be easily re-heated in the microwave. This recipe for Chicken Cordon Bleu casserole is a 1960s retro casserole classic that will stand the test of time.

CHICKEN CORDON BLEU CASSEROLE 2 (6-ounce) packages long grain and wild rice mix 6 (about 2-1/2 pounds total) skinless, boneless chicken breast halves 6 very thin slices Black Forest ham or country ham 3 ounces Gruyere cheese, cut into 3 by 1/2 by 1/2inch sticks, plus 1/2 cup (2 ounces) shredded Gruyere cheese for sprinkling 1 1/2 tablespoons poultry seasoning 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon ground black pepper 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper

719-481-3244

website: http://www.bellapanini.com 1/3 cup all-purpose flour, plus 2 tablespoons for the sauce 2 eggs, lightly beaten 2 tablespoons water 1-1/2 cups whole-wheat panko (Japanese-style bread crumbs) 1/4 cup vegetable oil 2 cups sliced fresh mushrooms (baby bellos, shiittake, chanterelle, cremini or button) 1/4 cup sliced green onions, white and green parts 2 cloves garlic, minced 2 tablespoons butter 2 cups half-and-half or light cream 1. Preheat oven to 350 F. Prepare rice mixes according to package directions. 2. Meanwhile, prepare the chicken breasts. Starting from the thickest side of each chicken breast half, make a horizontal slit into, but not through, the other side. Wrap each stick of cheese in a slice of ham and insert it into a slit. Secure with wooden toothpicks. Sprinkle chicken on both sides with 1 tablespoon poultry seasoning, and 1/2 teaspoon salt and pepper. 3. Place flour and remaining 1/2 tablespoon poultry seasoning in a shallow dish, stir to combine. In a second shallow dish, combine eggs and water. Place the panko breadcrumbs and remaining 1/2 teaspoon salt and pepper and the cayenne pepper in a third shallow dish, stir to combine. Dip chicken in flour, shaking off excess; dip in egg, then in panko, turning and pressing chicken into the panko to coat. 4. In an extra-large skillet, heat 2 tablespoons oil over medium heat. Cook chicken, in batches, in the hot oil about 4 minutes or until brown on both sides; place the finished batch on a paper towel-covered plate. Add the remaining 2 tablespoons oil and continue to brown the second batch of chicken breasts. Place on the plate and remove toothpicks.

New DVD Releases for Week of October 10, 2011 PICKS OF THE WEEK

“Horrible Bosses” (R) -- When three friends share the same cup of sadness, it can be uplifting -- unless they’re all sharing the desire to murder their bosses, then it’s comedy gold. It may sound like dark and rocky territory for laughs, but it’s expertly navigated by the freshly minted comedy trio of Jason Bateman, Charley Day and “Saturday Night Live” cast member Jason Sudeikis. Once they’re all on-screen, it seems like simple comedy chemistry to get

these three in the same room together. The aforementioned maligned bosses also are well-cast, as Jennifer Aniston, Colin Farrel and Kevin Spacey are each hilariously hate-able. Now we can only hope that the trio who put in the hours will get the A-list promotion they each deserve. “The Tree of Life” (R) -- Easily the most divisive movie of the summer, “The Tree of Life” is either a bold vision or a murky head-scratcher of a film. From the outside, it looks like a daddy-issue drama with Brad Pitt as the complicated Midwestern father and Sean Penn as the mixed-up grownup looking back on his upbringing. What audiences will get is a meditation on the nature of the universe -- from the beginning of time to the existential angst of modernity. The scope of the film fluctuates from cosmic down to deeply personal, and the narrative skips through time at its own pace.

Whether this makes “The Tree of Life” brilliant or just hard to follow, it’s certainly not conventional storytelling. The film should be checked out with an open mind.

DOG OF THE WEEK

“Green Lantern” (PG-13) -- DC Comics’ latest champion to step into the bigscreen foray is the Green Lantern, a hero with alien powers derived from bravery and willpower. Cocky test pilot Hal Jordan (Ryan Reynolds) is the first human ever inducted into the intergalactic peacekeeping force know as the Green Lantern Corps. He’s unique from a Superman or a Batman, so why does this superhero movie feel so ... familiar and unexciting?

this green silliness.

CULT CORNER

“Riki-Oh: The Story of Ricky” [Blu-ray] (Not rated) -- Ricky is an honest young martial artist who has never-quite-explained superhuman strength -- he doesn’t punch criminals, he punches through them. In a prison owned and operated by an organized crime ring, it’s up to him to solve problems with outlandish violence. In its first release on Blu-ray, adequately desensitized fans finally can soak in every drop of the absurdity.

TV RELEASES “Chuck: The Complete Fourth Season” “Workaholics: Season One”

Whatever the cause, “Green Lantern” feels like a bright green projection of wasted potential. Anyone who isn’t a diehard comic fan might wonder what’s the point in all

If this happens to you, act quickly. Call one of the credit bureaus and instigate a credit alert. One is required to tell both of the other two, so you’re saved that step.

DON’T DELAY! OPT OUT OF ONLINE DATABASES DELETE YOURSELF FROM ONLINE DATABASES

T

here is a new step to be taken these days when it comes to guarding your credit: look yourself up online. There are dozens of online sites that assemble public records and publicly available information and offer it for sale. Information that can be purchased includes telephone number, home address, real estate deed, professional licensing, lawsuits, births, divorces, marriages, deaths, household demographics. Bankruptcies, email address, felonies and tax liens can be included, and so much more. Some of them will provide a satellite map with an arrow pointing to your house. Let’s say you look up your name on a site such as Intelius.com. You’ll likely find the name of your spouse and children next to yours. To your surprise you might find someone else’s name listed as well. This might be your first clue that someone has stolen your identity and has taken out a loan or made a purchase, combining your information.

Go to creditreport.com and order your credit reports from all three bureaus. Read them carefully when they arrive. While you’re waiting, opt out of as many online database sites as you can. Most of them don’t make it easy, but the fewer places that have your information, the better. Often there is an opt-out page, but you’ll have to hunt for it. You’ll need a photo file of your drivers license with the photo and number blacked out. You’ll have to upload or fax that information as well as specify which name you wish to have them delete. This can be tricky: You might be listed as ďŹ rst name and last name, or your middle initial might be included, or your first two initials might be used instead of names. Ask for all of them to be deleted. You’ll need to check again every few months. The reason: As more and more databases are sharing their records, or as you make transactions, your name could come up again. You’ll need to delete it every time you find your name appearing. As a general rule, when you open a new account, opt out of having your information shared. It’s no guarantee that your name won’t get out, but it’s a small step. S

ome of the strongest and most youthful superheroes to jump from the pages of comic books to the silver screen in recent years are old enough to be receiving full Social Security retirement benefits. Whether standing before the bat-computer or going online at the fortress of solitude, these guys were certainly wise enough to apply for retirement benefits at www.socialsecurity.gov. Superman may be America’s most popular superhero, and also the oldest to hit the screen in recent years. The man of steel was created in 1932. The guy’s 79 years old and he has a new movie coming out in 2012. Superman does mostly volunteer work, but even if he earns wages as Clark Kent, his benefits won’t be offset since he reached his full retirement age. Batman made his debut in 1939, and he’s about to star in another feature film, running around like a 30-yearold. Also in his 70s, Mr. Wayne is getting full retirement benefits — and Robin too. The same can’t be said for the Joker or Penguin; you can’t collect benefits while you’re in prison. The Green Lantern and Captain America made their silver screen debuts this year. They were “born in 1940 and

1941, and also are of retirement age. One would expect Captain America to look a little more like Uncle Sam these days, but as is true with many Social Security retirees today, staying active keeps him young. For the “silver ageâ€? of comic book heroes, retirement isn’t quite here yet. Spider-Man slung his first web in 1962, the same year the incredible Hulk burst into being. Iron Man and the XMen first appeared in 1963. They may not be ready to retire just yet, but it’s a good time for them to take a look at the online Retirement Estimator, where they can get an instant, personalized estimate of future retirement benefits. Come to think of it, if the Hulk or any of the X-Men ever get severely injured, they may qualify for disability benefits through Social Security. The place to go for more information is www.socialsecurity.gov. Ask any of these superheroes about retirement plans, and you’re likely to get an earful. They won’t be sitting around — they’ll be staying active even as they collect retirement beneďŹ ts. You don’t have to have a bat-computer or be a superhero to harness the power of the Retirement Estimator at www.socialsecurity.gov/estimator, or to apply online for benefits at www.socialsecurity.gov. Up, up, and away into an active retirement!

IT’S THE LAW! by Christopher C. Meyer, Attorney at Law, P.C.

THE MARRIAGE ZONE:

NO FAULT DIVORCE By Christopher C. Meyer © July 2007

C

olorado is a “no fault” divorce State. “No-fault divorce” means that in order to get a divorce decree from a Court you do not have to prove that the other party (your spouse) did something wrong, such as mental cruelty, physical abuse, or adultery. There are states that still require proof of fault in order to grant a divorce decree. In Colorado to get a divorce all you have to prove is that your marriage is “irretrievably broken”, and that one of the parties has been domiciled in Colorado for at least 90 days immediately prior to the filing of the petition for divorce.

SHOT at retirement

Proving that your marriage is irretrievably broken is simply a matter of stating that this is the state of your marriage. Even if the other party disagrees that your marriage is so broken, you will still get your divorce. However, a Judge might require you to try counseling before the divorce will be granted. Please remember that counseling is almost always a good idea if you are headed for a divorce. The phrase “irretrievably broken” is interesting in itself. You may be asking yourself, “shouldn’t that be irreparably broken?” I agree with you, but who are we to argue with the legislature? That Colorado is a no-fault divorce state does mean that fault cannot play a role in a divorce case. Fault can become relevant if it is “economic fault.” “Economic fault” does not refer to making bad investments. It is the kind of fault that will be considered to be a dissipation of marital assets. For example, losing the bulk of your retirement investments in the dot com debacle is not economic fault. If you were making these investments while you were under the influence of illegal substances, that might be another story. However, buying jewelry for your lover or gambling away your paycheck is economic fault, and you will be held accountable for such dissipation of marital assets. Divorce law is like all law. You must remember that: you may not understand the law; you may not like it; and you may not think its fair; but it’s the law!
