T
he onset of fall bestows upon us an array of rich, brilliant colors like the golden hues of Colorado’s Aspen trees. The colors of fall extend beyond Mother Nature’s framework into the vast realm of autumn’s abundance of fresh foods, from deep orange pumpkins to ďŹ re engine red apples. Pumpkins are a sign that the holiday season is knocking at the door. Speaking of knocking on the door, carved pumpkins line residential doorsteps at Halloween, welcoming the little goblins and ghosts begging for candy. The mere mention of fall foods must include a tad bit about Snickers and candy corn.

ples is their health value. Apples contain antioxidants and benefit the digestive system, skin, teeth and heart. One apple a day can reduce cholesterol levels and lower the risk of other illnesses.
TRICK OR TREAT The National Retail Federation estimated that the average American spent about $18 on candy for Halloween in 2010. The most popular treat is arguable, but inarguably chocolate in various forms dominates the top 10 lists. The favorites appearing on most Halloween candy top 10 lists include these goodies (in no particular order): Tootsie rolls, Snicker bars; Baby Ruth bars, Reese’s pieces, Milky Way bars, M&M’s, Nestle Crunch, Three Musketeers and Hershey’s milk chocolate bars, Hot Tamales and candy corn.
FROM APPLES TO SQUASH The best oranges of the season are yet to come, but a fall food that has the orange color in common is squash. There is summer and winter squash, the latter entering the market in the fall. Besides orange, squash comes in all colors, shapes and sizes and also alternates as a table decoration! The following can be part of the menu or adorn the dining room as décor. (Except for one, the other squash varieties mentioned are available year round, but their peak seasons are late summer through fall.)
Halloween might be a boon to dentists everywhere, but perhaps the seasonal height of the crisp, juicy apple offsets the sugar-laden treats.

• Acorn squash is small, mainly dark green and shaped like, of course, an acorn. It’s usually halved before baked and coated in butter. Its flesh is sweet and fibrous. • Butternut squash is easily found in grocery stores. It’s shaped like a bell or a vase and beige colored. This squash has a taste familiar to sweet potatoes; some have likened it to a sweet, nutty flavor with a hint of butterscotch. It’s a common ingredient in soup. • Spaghetti squash is a tasty substitute for pasta. It looks like a golden-yellow watermelon and the larger the better. When it’s cooked, the strands of flesh look like spaghetti pasta, which makes it a caloriefriendly favorite for sauces. • Fairytale Pumpkin Squash (also known by its French name of

Halloween brings thoughts of turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, cranberries and whatever else makes up the Thanksgiving table. Some are salivating at the mouth as early as September and can’t wait for Thanksgiving. There are quite a few Thanksgiving “trials” before the real day.
No. 6: Mac and cheese Now that it’s cool enough to turn on the oven, longings for baked casseroles tempt the bellies of many. Another comfort food, macaroni and cheese is especially good when there’s a chill in the air.
No. 7: Hot Chocolate who can argue with that? Hot chocolate and high school football games go together like peanut butter and jelly. There’s nothing better than a cup of hot chocolate to warm up the senses.

Chili comes in at the top but with a chill in the air, the body begins aching for warm foods; and chili, soups and stews do more than heat it up; they’re also thought of as comfort foods. Nothing like a bowl of soup and a slice of warm pumpkin bread on a frosty evening.

Recipes that call for sweet potatoes are endless, and fall is an excellent time to try them. Besides baked sweet potatoes with butter and cinnamon and sweet potato pie, the orange cousin to the potato is a great companion to recipes for bread, soufflés and casseroles. typical grocery store’s shelves are lined with packaged foods that are full of genetically modified ingredients. Genetically modified foods contribute to many illnesses and the testing of safety is completed through the companies who run the biotechnology, rather than a third party. People can avoid eating GM foods by choosing NON-GMO foods and organic foods. The general water supply is not entirely clean and contains fluoride. Fluoride is linked to a multitude of health issues. The Dental Director, Dr. Bull, was quoted as saying, “water contains a number of substances that are undesirable, and fluorides are just one of them.” People can demand clean water. The air contains many pollutants as well. There has been much controversy over the concept of chemtrails. Do they exist or not? One needs to research himself or herself and make that determination. There is much research that discusses the existence of chemtrails and many websites that say they are simply contrails and that it is nothing to

One can continue their research and find patents for seeding the air to prevent global warming from escalating. The United Nations has admitted they authorize chemtrails, or geo-engineering, as a way to combat global warming. Despite the reasoning, geo-engineering leaves chemicals in the air that eventually fall onto our foods, water supply, and it is inhaled. Research shows that chemtrails will end up in a tictac-toe pattern and spread out over hours.

Representative Kucinich sponsored HR 2977 that discussed space-based weapons. The original bill listed chemtrails as one of the weapons. Much more research is available to determine if they exist and if they do, what chemicals are in them.

Life Energy Flow Tai Yi offers a treatment called Trail of Emotional Death. This treatment has two parts and they need to be completed between 24-48 hours apart. The chemicals in chemtrails deeply affect feeling in the emotions and one can develop apathy and passivity. The treatment helps prevent that from occurring and assists the person to feel emotionally. This is for those who feel disconnected to everything and feels like giving up.

Fatal floods struck in 1287, 1338, 1374, 1394 and 1396. After each, residents fixed the dikes and moved right back in. • On Nov. 14, 1851, “Moby-Dick,” a novel by Herman Melville about the voyage of the whaling ship Pequod, is published. “MobyDick” is now considered a classic of American literature and contains one of the most famous opening lines in fiction: “Call me Ishmael.”

Unfortunately, vitamins and supplements don’t have to pass scrutiny in testing, so you might not be getting what the bottle says. It could be more, or less, or the contents could be contaminated. Don’t self-diagnose. If you take vitamins and supplements, or are considering it, the first step is to talk to your doctor. If you really need to know what’s in your supplements, Consumer Lab (consumerlab.com) does testing and issues reports. It costs $33 per year for a subscription (call 888-5025100 instead of putting your creditcard number on the purchase page). There’s also a free email newsletter that will tell you about warnings, recalls and reviews. To learn more about vitamins, go online to the Office of Dietary Supplements (http://ods.od.nih.gov), which is part of the National Institutes of Health. On the right, look for the link to Tips for Older Supplement Users. TAKE A REST, MY RESTLESS LEGS DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I would like to know more about restless leg syndrome. -- I.J. ANSWER: Roughly 7 percent of women and 3 percent of men suffer from restless leg syndrome. That gives you a lot of fellow sufferers. People describe it in many ways. Some say it’s an aching in their legs. Others describe it as a creepingcrawling sensation. No matter how people express the feeling, it makes them get up and move around. Activity lessens or gets rid of the sensations, but they can and do come back. They usually appear in the evening or at night when people are sitting or when they get into bed. No one is sure what causes the syndrome. Things that lessen its intensity and frequency are cutting back on caffeine, stopping smoking and exercising daily. Eliminating alcohol is a most helpful remedy. Sometimes restless leg syndrome is associated with iron deficiency and the anemia due to iron deficiency. Your doctor will want to check you
Individualized treatment for:
Pramipexole (Mirapex) and ropinirole (Requip), both drugs for Parkinson’s disease, are used for this syndrome, even though it has no relationship to Parkinson’s disease. They stimulate certain brain areas that control movement. Levodopa, another Parkinson’s medicine, also is prescribed. There are others, should these fail.
Periodic limb movements of sleep is another condition that frequently occurs along with restless leg syndrome. It’s involuntary movements of the legs and feet during sleep. The kicking and jerking last about two seconds and recur every 20 to 40 seconds. Often the affected person is unaware of them. The bed partner plays a nighttime role of being a drop-kicked football and is quite aware of what’s happening. The affected person is quite tired during the day. The same medicines used for restless leg syndrome can be used here, too. Daily exercise might put an end to the nocturnal movements. The booklet on restless leg syndrome and nighttime leg cramps explains both conditions. To obtain a copy, write to: Dr. Donohue -- No. 306W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name. Please allow four weeks for delivery.

What’s the best way to treat them? They aren’t getting any better. I use ice on them, and it helps, but they come back. -- M.C. ANSWER: Those puffy bags under your eyes aren’t filled with water; they’re globs of fat. In younger years, tough strands of fiber held them in place. With age, those strands weaken, and the fat bulges out. Look around and watch for them on TV. You’ll see that most people over 60 have them. They’re not a sign of illness. I have seen all sorts of ads for creams and gels that say they can shrink these bags. I can’t vouch for any of them. I don’t know if they work. I have reservations. One way to correct them is surgical removal. You can forget the ice treatment unless you want to keep it up. It’s not a solution. ***

What Does Water Do?
Drinking half of your body weight in ounces of water can support all of the above functions (ex: if you weigh 150#, drink 75 ounces). To help ensure I get adequate water each day, I have a 24 ounce water bottle that I make sure I fill three times each day and consume. Not all water is the same. I do recommend filtered water whenever possible. There are several options for this. If you choose to do distilled water, be sure to add minerals back into your diet/supplement routine. The more alkaline your water is, the better. By law, it should be a pH of 7. The more alkaline (higher number), the better it is for you. We personally use the Santevia Water System, which you can find online, as it helps to alkalinize.

SMALL TOWN CHRISTMAS Held the first Saturday in December from 10:00am to 2:00pm, this day full of holiday activities includes visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus along with crafts and activities for children, open houses and other special events as the merchants of Historic Downtown Monument celebrate a Small Town Christmas PEACE. LOVE. SWAP. KID’S CLOTHING AND GEAR SWAP Aerials Gymnastics East January 22, 2012 2PM-3PM drop off, 3:30 swapping begins Peace. Love. Swap. is a one of a kind organization that produces ongoing kid’s swaps. The swaps are for local eco/budget minded parents to get together and recycle (exchange) their kid’s stuff (ages 0-14 and maternity). After the swaps, I donate the leftovers to local charities and families in need. You can get more info, read our mission statement & see what moms are saying at: http://peaceloveswaps/colorado-springs/ The parents that attend our swaps are the parents that live in your community ~ and in order to make the swaps a success, we need as many parents to participate as possible. Kids grow out of their stuff so fast & always need new stuff, & in this economic climate, what better way to get “new” stuff than to swap with other families. That is what peace. love. swap is all about. For only $5, you take as much stuff as you need - period. Need a pack n play? done. Clothes for all three of your kids? done. Books, toys, shoes, swings.. we have that - and it’s all only $5. The only rule? Take only what you need, and bring it back when you are done. That’s all we ask. peace. love. swap is truly a winwin for everyone involved. It’s green, fun, philanthropic & catching on fast! Cranberries are packed with antioxidants that may help maintain heart health and reduce cholesterol. The tannins in cranberries may help prevent gum disease and urinary tract infections. In the lab, cranberries prevent bacteria from adhering to the walls of the urinary tract and the gum line. According to the November 2010 Tufts University Health and Nutrition Letter, “a metaanalysis of randomized controlled trials investigating cranberry intake and urinary-tract infections showed that there has been some benefit established in reducing the number of infections in women.” Cranberry juice is often the choice when trying to prevent infection. The fluid in the juice also helps maintain hydration, which is known to help prevent infection. Cranberries are very tart and are often consumed in combination with sugar.

New DVD Releases for Week of November 14, 2011 PICKS OF THE WEEK
“Larry Crowne” (PG-13) -- This movie strives for sweetness. It pursues it the way reality TV people strive to be actual celebrities, the way that overprivileged trophy wives strive to be 20 years younger. This movie tries so hard to be sweet that it becomes a delusional crusade for feel-good moments. Tom Hanks is let go from his beloved job at
a department store because he doesn’t have a college degree. Stay with me, now. Hanks has no choice but to enroll in community college, bond with other misfits, buy a second-hand scooter, woo his professor (Julia Roberts) and keep smiling with those apple cheeks. It’s hard to despise a movie that wants so badly to make people feel good, so “Larry Crowne” manages to charm its way out of a failing grade. “Beginners” (R) -- Oliver (Ewan McGregor) is a introspective young man whose notions about life and love are seasoned by his experience with his late father (Christopher Plummer.) Oliver’s father, you see, came out as a gay man at the age of 75 and proceeded to live his new life to the fullest. When Oliver meets and falls in love with a beautiful, eccentric foreigner (Melanie Laurent), the memories of his father rush back to form new insights.
Yep, it’s melancholy and cutesy and the same time, but there is something to be found. There are some truly funny moments and a few interesting turns of event, but it’s all interspersed with quite a bit of navel-gazing. “Superheroes” (NR) -- This HBO documentary looks into the world of the “reallife superheroes.” Ordinary people wearing homemade costumes have started patrolling the streets in cities across America with the mission to do good. It’s hard not to watch. Because of the director’s approach, these people can’t be simply dismissed as loonies -- they are trying to do something good, after all -- but the reality of a security guard who, by night, calls himself Mr. Extreme isn’t so illustrious. “Evil Dead 2: 25th Anniversary Edition” (R) [Blu-ray] -- This is possibly the funni-
16
est and absolutely the most insane horror movie ever seen by man. It’s not a sequel, but a remake, done by the same director (Sam Raimi) with the same leading star, just with a bigger budget and wilder ideas. The film has a unique sensibility, i.e. when demons possess your hand, replace that hand with a chainsaw. By the time you finish the movie, you’ll be wondering why all films can’t be this ludicrous and exciting.

But are you ready?
Toys “R Us has a layaway plan for eligible merchandise. You’ll pay a $5 fee and put down at least 20 percent. The cancellation fee varies by state. Beware using online layaway for purchases you make over the Internet. These retailers offer an enticing low fee, but consider the ramifications of putting your banking information online: Money is automatically deducted from your account at regular intervals. If you cancel, they’ll hit your account for $25 or 10 percent of the layaway total. Consider, too, the hassle of merchandise that is delivered late or damaged.

At Best Buy, your layaway items must total more than $250. You’ll also have to pay 25 percent down as well as a 5 percent fee. This can still be a good deal if it helps you grab an expensive item when it’s on sale. Do the math.

THE MARRIAGE ZONE: THE SWORN FINANCIAL STATEMENT By Christopher C. Meyer © July 2008

n a previous article I described the mandatory financial disclosure requirements in domestic relations cases. The most basic mandatory financial disclosure requirement is the obligation of both parties to exchange and file sworn financial statements. This requirement applies to all initial and post decree domestic relations cases that involve financial matters, such as child support, maintenance (alimony), and property division. The sworn financial statement is a seven-page form. You will enter your income, expense, asset, and debt information in the spaces provided.

The sworn financial statement provides each party and the Court with the basic information that is needed to determine the party’s financial status. This form is an extremely useful document. It is the prime source for quick reference as to what the parties can afford on a monthly basis and their net worth. The sworn financial statement is intended to be an accurate snapshot of each party’s financial status as of the date that the party signs the document. Your signature must be notarized.

The sworn financial statement requires a comprehensive listing of the parties’ monthly expenses. It shows the monthly budget for the parties. The income and expense information from the sworn financial statement will be used to determine child support and maintenance (alimony). After the form is completed, it is not unusual for parties to discover that their expenses exceed their incomes. The sworn financial statement can also be used as a tool for projecting future budgetary needs. Most people’s financial situations change significantly after they are divorced. They will have less money to live on. You can use the sworn financial statement to project what your future budget will look like. You can use the form to project your future financial needs even if you are not involved in a court case. You can download a copy of the sworn financial statement for no cost from the Colorado Courts website (www.courts.state.co.us.) You will not enjoy filling out this form. However, it is an extremely useful exercise because it makes you come to terms with your financial realities. It is also one of the best tools available for projecting your future financial status. Instead of worrying about your financial future, do something about it! Download the sworn financial statement, fill it out, and see what your future looks like.
