SNIPPETZ WRITES A LETTER TO SANTA by Deborah Stumpf

Dear Santa…I’ve been mostly good this year, so could I please have a Barbie, an Etch-ASketch and a Wii for Christmas? What do the reindeer like to eat? How do you get down the chimney? Please try to be very quiet this year and not wake up daddy. He gets cranky when somebody wakes him up…And, Santa, please be good to all the Snippetz advertisers. Oh, and one more thing: My mommy needs a new car. And I almost forgot – can you make everybody be kind to one another?

W

hat child doesn’t write a letter to Santa in the weeks before Christmas? And then there are some adults who give it a shot as well. No one knows exactly how the tradition started, but it’s been since at least the late 1800s that Santa has been the recipient of millions of letters from all over the world this time of year.

A FEW RULES

WHERE DO THE LETTERS GO?

Like any other large program, there are a few rules for Operation Santa Claus in order to protect the identity of the children who write to Santa. Interested parties wishing to adopt letters must complete a form, provide valid photo identification and adopt letters in person at a participating post office. For more information, go to the postal service Web site at http://usps.com.

When not intercepted by Santa’s local elves, they likely land in the post office. During the early 1900s, postal workers informally volunteered as elves to answer those letters and the practice grew. In 1912, Postmaster General Frank Hitchcock gave official authorization for the program now called Operation Santa Claus.

KIDS SAY THE DARNDEST THINGS TO SANTA

OPERATION SANTA CLAUS

Dear Santa, Please give me a doll this year. I would like her to eat, walk, do my homework and help me clean my room. Thank you, Jenny

Postal workers originally contributed their own money to purchase gifts for children whose letters to Santa were clearly a plea for help in difficult situations. A child might ask for one toy to share with four siblings; another might ask for a winter coat because his mother can’t afford to pay the heat bill; many ask for clothing and shoes. One homeless child reportedly asked for diapers and a warm blanket for his baby sister. Desperate parents write to ask for help paying the heating bill or providing clothing for their children.

Dear Santa, You can send me one of everything from the boys’ section of the Sears catalogue. But nothing from the girls’ section. I can’t wait for Christmas to come. Kent

Operation Santa Claus has grown to include the handling of hundreds of thousands of letters each year. Postal workers track the letters and citizens come to pick out a letter or letters to make someone’s wish come true. Many organizations and businesses are more formally involved by donating time and money, such as Macy’s and local charitable organizations. One mother wrote for help with her child who was born without an ear. Doctors Leif Rogers and Sheryl Lewin of Beverly Hills, Calif., answered that call and donated surgery in February of this year. Luckily, there are Santas everywhere.

Dear Santa, Mommy says that you only bring presents for the good little boys. That isn’t fair. Brian Dear Father Christmas, My mother told me to write to you and say thanks for the train set. My dad plays with it all the time. Mike What type of fuel do you use for your sleigh or are your reindeers just hyper? Either way, I hope you won’t miss our house. Matt My Dad did the naughty/nice test and was called a little stinker. Please give him somthing he did’nt mean to be bad. Saoirse

AND THE HEARTFELT Can you please help the homeless children have a good Christmas with at least something really good to eat and maybe a small toy for them to love. Andrew Dear Santa, I would love all the presents I asked for but my mom deserves them more. I have been getting presents all year from my mom and she works hard to get them for me. My mom doesn’t know how much I love her that’s why I want her to have all my presents. Love, Victoria I want everyone in the world to play nicer with each other. Mommy wants everyone to take better care of the world and Daddy just wants to read his Sunday paper in peace. Ellis I have tried to be very good all year, I only messed up a few times, but I tried my best, and thats what my mom and dad said counts. Heather I help my mom with the dishes and I help my grandma and grandpa by giving them lots of hugs .......So please give them something nice too! Katelyn

YES, VIRGINIA, THERE IS A SANTA CLAUS That saying came from a New York “Sun editorial written in 1897 by Fran-

cis Pharcellus Church. The editorial was in response to 8-year-old Virginia O’Hanlon’s letter wanting to know if there really was a Santa Claus.

The original correspondence: DEAR EDITOR: I am 8 years old. Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus. Papa says, ‘If you see it in THE SUN it’s so.’ Please tell me the truth; is there a Santa Claus? VIRGINIA O’HANLON 115 WEST NINETY-FIFTH STREET

VIRGINIA, your little friends are wrong. They have been affected by the skepticism of a skeptical age. They do not believe except [what] they see. They think that nothing can be which is not comprehensible by their little minds. All minds, Virginia, whether they be men’s or children’s, are little. In this great universe of ours man is a mere insect, an ant, in his intellect, as compared with the boundless world about him, as measured by the intelligence capable of grasping the whole of truth and knowledge.

Yes, VIRGINIA, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! how dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus. It would be as dreary as if there were no VIRGINIAS. There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. We should have no enjoyment, except in sense

and sight. The eternal light with which childhood fills the world would be extinguished. Not believe in Santa Claus! You might as well not believe in fairies! You might get your papa to hire men to watch in all the chimneys on Christmas Eve to catch Santa Claus, but even if they did not see Santa Claus coming down, what would that prove? Nobody sees Santa Claus, but that is no sign that there is no Santa Claus. The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see. Did you ever see fairies dancing on the lawn? Of course not, but that’s no proof that they are not there. Nobody can conceive or imagine all the wonders there are unseen and unseeable in the world. You may tear apart the baby’s rattle and see what makes the noise inside, but there is a veil covering the unseen

LIFE ENERGY FLOW TAI YI: PILLAR OF MIND

T

he mind is a powerful tool or it can be a powerful negative force in a person’s life. The mind holds onto memories, experiences, false beliefs, and thought patterns. A person’s mind can lie, manipulate, change memories, suppress memories, and form denial. In the positive, a person’s mind has the ability to accurately remember memories, identify false beliefs in order to heal them, change thought patterns, and change perceptions. The difference is how the person chooses to use his or her mind. Many do not understand how the mind works and its relation to the brain. The brain is an organ. It has its physical functions to operate the body. Physically, it controls everything. The mind is not an organ, but rather an energetic field. It holds energies, such as beliefs, thought patterns, and memories. Beliefs, thought patterns, and memories are not physical.

brain. When the mind is polluted with energies (memories, beliefs, thought patterns) that are stagnant, angry, depressing, and fearful, the mind can and does alter its relationship with the brain. That means the brain begins functioning differently. The brain chemicals might become out of balance, certain parts of the brain may show difficulty in functioning and create physical difficulties in the body. For example, over a lengthy time, a person may see issues with front temporal lobe dementia.

When a person chooses to begin to heal, that person is examining what is in the mind that is not creating a joyful life. In that process, he or she is clearing out old energies that keep the mind stagnant. That will create an effect on the brain as well, since the two are connected. A person who chooses to heal may need some assistance in understanding how the mind works, how beliefs work, and how to create a reality without using painful beliefs.

A Tai Yi treatment called Pillar of Mind assists people to use their mind to self-create by NOT using beliefs or other people’s creations. These beliefs/thought patterns are contrary to a person’s purpose or soul. When a person acts out beliefs that are contrary to the soul, it creates low or deep depression/ anxiety. This exercise works with that and makes the beliefs weaker, allowing more positive experience to the person.

LinkedIn Advanced Tips and Tricks Part 1

Series 4, Article 3 If you're like most business people today, you've created a LinkedIn Profile. And you've most likely filled out your profile, your job history, your education, awards, groups, etc. But there is more you can do to maximize your use of your LinkedIn profile. Check out some of these tips that can make you stand out above the crowd. 1. Turn your LinkedIn Profile into a beautiful resume. Simply go to: Fill in your LinkedIn profile with all of your information. Then simply go to http://resume.linkedinlabs.com and pick a resume template and customize the content that is automatically pulled from your LinkedIn Profile. You can add a link to your classy resume in your LinkedIn profile so it can be printed out by prospective employers, future clients, interested entrepreneurs, the local reporter needing info to write an article about you, etc. 2. Keep up with "Status Updates"….but don't bore your Connections! At the top of your profile, there is an empty box that says, 'What are you working on?' No one, not even your mother, cares if you just cleaned the litter box. You're not texting a friend, you are sharing valuable information to help your Connections. Just like any social networking, you want to keep constant interesting information shared on your profile otherwise it is a stagnant "business card". This can be done quickly and easily with these samples of status update starters: "is writing …", "finished reading …", "found this neat website ...", "started drafting a new article on…", "wonders what you think about …", "thinks that …", "is teaching …", "hope you get a chance to …", "is looking forward to presenting …", "proposed a new way to …" then complete the sentence with something going on in your life or your business that will spark interest and conversation.

PROFESSIONAL SERVICES

3. Don't just be a "Someone!" On Facebook, snooping at someone's profile just to be nosey is called "stalking"…..(albeit stalking in a friendly and harmless way). But on LinkedIn, you want people to know that you are interested in them, just as you want to know who is interested in you. This is a professional networking system and interest in someone's profile is a compliment, whether they are a friend, business associate or a complete stranger. Let them know who you are when you check them out. Who knows, you may not know why you were reading their profile, but they may contact you and it could be the beginning of a beautiful business relationship. Go to your "Account & Settings." Click "Profile Views." Change the default to "Show my name and headline." When your network views their "Who's viewed my profile?" on their home page, you won't appear as just a "Someone". Your name and headline will appear!

And if most married women, even the pretty ones, look so dull, it’s because they’re getting too much respect.” -- Marilyn Monroe (c) 2011 King Features Synd., Inc.

MOMENTS IN TIME THE HISTORY CHANNEL

• On Nov. 28, 1582, William Shakespeare, 18, and Anne Hathaway, 26, pay a 40-pound bond for their marriage license in Stratfordupon-Avon. Six months later, Anne gave birth to their daughter, Susanna, and two years later, to twins. Shakespeare’s plays were not published until after his death, when two members of his troupe collected copies of his plays and printed the First Folio (1623). • On Dec. 4, 1928, “Dapper Dan” Hogan, a St. Paul, Minn., saloonkeeper and mob boss, is killed when someone plants a car bomb under the floorboards of his new Paige coupe. The first car bomb was a horsedrawn-wagon bomb that exploded in 1920 outside the J.P. Morgan Company’s offices in New York City. • On Nov. 29, 1942, coffee joins the list of items rationed in the United States. Rationing was generally employed to guarantee a fair distribution to all citizens and to give priority to military use in World War II.

• On Dec. 2, 1959, the Malpasset Dam in France collapses after a week-long rain storm, and the resulting flood kills more than 400 people. The city of Frejus, built by Roman Emperor Julius Caesar as a port city on the French Riviera, was devastated by the massive flood. • On Dec. 3, 1979, 11 people are killed in a stampede outside a Who concert in Cincinnati when a crowd of general-admission ticket-holders surges forward through shattered doors in an attempt to secure prime unreserved seats inside. After the crowd cleared, 11 concert-goers were found on the ground, dead from asphyxiation. • On Nov. 30, 1989, Aileen Wuornos, America’s first female serial killer, picks up her first victim in Palm Harbor, Fla. She would kill a total of seven men in the next year. When caught, Wuornos confessed but claimed that they had all been killed in selfdefense. • On Dec. 1, 1990, workers 132 feet below the English Channel drill through a final wall of rock, opening the “Chunnel” and connecting the two ends of an underwater tunnel linking Folkestone, England, and Calais, France. HUMANS CAN SPROUT NEW BLOOD VESSELS DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I don’t remember you addressing this subject, so I thought I would write. In 1997, I had a mild heart attack and went on medicines. Six months later I had another mild incident that led me to angioplasty. Ever since, I have been eating well, exercising and taking all my meds. My cardiologist says I have great collaterals. I have sprouted new vessels for my heart. I thought I should have some kind of intervention, but the doctor says no. Can you discuss autogenesis? Am I related to a starfish? -R.S. ANSWER: You’re the first writer ever to use the word “autogenesis.” If a starfish loses an arm, it grows another -- autogenesis. Humans have the same ability when it comes to blood vessels. They can grow new ones, and do so in many instances. Heart-attack victims often can sprout new arteries. It’s a long process. It doesn’t happen overnight. And it doesn’t happen to all people.

Individualized treatment for:

The booklet on CAD -coronary artery disease -- discusses how vessels become plugged and how they are treated. To order a copy, write: Dr. Donohue -- No. 101W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery.

*** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: You are familiar with energy drinks, aren’t you? Well, my teenage son has gotten in the habit of drinking them far too often. He says they really do increase his energy. I’m worried that they might be dangerous. Will you please provide some information? -- B.B.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I had my gallbladder removed a year ago. I now have diarrhea, and the doctor says it’s from not having a gallbladder. My doctor prescribed cholestyramine. It causes severe constipation. I now take half the dose, but still I have to be careful about what I eat or drink. Do you have a suggestion? -- E.J.

ANSWER: One kind of energy drink is a mixture of caffeine and alcohol. In November 2010, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration declared such combinations to be unsafe. I’m sure your son isn’t using this sort of energy drink. Others are.

ANSWER: Without a gallbladder to store it, bile drips into the digestive tract constantly. That constant drip irritates the tract in some people, and it causes food to rush through faster than normal. You have found the cure for this -- cholestyramine. The only matter that remains is to determine the correct dose for you. Your boy is likely drinking caffein- That will come with a little experiated beverages. What are some options to prevent that excess baggage on your belly, hips or thighs?

and snacks to ‘save up’ for that big meal at night. That is putting blood sugar imbalances on steroids and will guarantee over-eating and weight gain.

Why the weight gain? Well that seems pretty obvious when you think of the food, stress and skipped meals. Yet, how can we enjoy the holidays if we don’t indulge at each party and activity?

1. Eat breakfast! Nothing impacts blood sugar imbalances more than skipped breakfast or eating a meal of carbs and sugar (i.e., cold cereal, bagel or pastry). Eating breakfast is the first step and then make sure that the breakfast has protein. My favorite is a delicious protein shake (hot or cold) and my favorite is the Body by Vi shake (check it out at www.lifestyleforhealth.com)

A friend gave interesting perspective the other day. She said, “the holiday foods will be always be here, I can

Plan and have snacks with you for mid-morning and mid-afternoon. My favorites include protein (i.e., muffins from the Vi Shake, cottage cheese, 6-10 pecans/ almonds, hard cooked eggs, guacamole and veggies, etc.). Making sure I have plenty of muffins made ahead helps a lot as that is high protein and fiber and fills me up but not out. My favorite is of course chocolate! www.lifestyleforhealth. com - Recipes)

3. Avoid Insulin Impacting Foods During the holidays, or any time you want stable blood sugar, avoid the ‘whites.’ White flour, white sugar, white rice and any food with those as the base can add to belly fat. Vote for clean protein sources, lots of veggies, a small amount of fruit and some grains such as quinoa and wild rice. I’ve put extra recipes on our website to give you ideas and encouragement, that this holiday season you can lose weight, enjoy the holidays and save some money! Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas!! I

like trying new things. Like, for example, when the Dum-Dum company produces a new flavor of lollipop; or when the makers of parachutes offer exclusive two for one deals on sky-diving… Okay, so I’ve never jumped out of a plane, but last weekend I did involve myself in some risky business. I went to a newly opened restaurant in town. Spicy Basil is an Asian grill located in Monument. It’s placed in a simple plot in a simple plaza. One could walk by and think it’s been there for years. It blends in, you see. However, upon stepping into the newly invented foodservice factory, I found something that didn’t fit in at all; it was purely unique. The interior draws you in, with vivid plots of nature and light surrounding the room, complete with high ceilings and contemporary lighting. I sat down feeling so very hip, like I’d found the new club on the block. My party and I took our booth and were greeted by every member of the staff. While confusing at times, it did deliver a very friendly environment, as Spicy Basil was careful in selecting a fun, humor-responsive group. They were all receptive, and all different, unafraid to show personality. The staff represents the menu well, as it too presented plenty of character. Most Asian Grills have a niche or specialty, if you will. Spicy Basil offers a variety of Asian dishes, including Chinese, Japanese, Thai, and Vietnamese meals.

I myself ordered a Japanese dish, the Sizzling Pepper Steak. I would say here, that this is the most recommended meal, as its portions and flavors were favorable. However, considering other members of my party raved about the Grilled Lime Pepper Shrimp, it’s your choice, mammal or crustacean, both seem a great choice. As the waiter walked with his black book, bouncing down the aisle, I found myself very pleased and very full. And while Spicy Basil isn’t particularly low priced, it does stay right in line with it’s competitors, and leaves you feeling it was worth the cost. For at the end of the evening, when the basil had been consumed, churning in the stomach of pleased patrons, the spice still was relevant. The Tri-Lakes Asian grill is new, and in some brief moments of confusion or awkward timing, Spicy Basil shows it’s newborn reflexes, but with the trendy interior, hefty portions, delicious cuisine and engaging staff, the restaurant proves to be a winner. Family, friends, and internet acquaintances rejoice, Spicy Basil Asian Grill is here, giving you the bite and flavor of downtown life, with the mom and pop attitude that built our community.

NEW LIFE FOR THANKSGIVING LEFTOVERS

E

very year around the holidays I’m faced with the same dilemma -- what do I do with all of the leftovers? I’ve stopped looking at leftovers as a problem and view them as a blessing and a challenge to my culinary creativity. Having a variety of already cooked and seasoned meats and vegetables means an easier time in the kitchen.

tional for garnish) 1. Preheat the oven to 400 F. Lightly grease a 9-inch square or 2.2 quart baking dish with the butter and set aside. 2. In a large saute pan or skillet, heat oil over medium-high heat. Add the onions, poultry seasoning, cayenne pepper, salt and pepper; cook, stirring, until the onions are soft, about 3 minutes. Add the garlic and cook, stirring, for 20 seconds. Add the flour and cook, stirring, until thick, about 1 minute. Stir in the tomato paste and cook, stirring, for 1 minute. Gradually add the stock and then the bay leaf, and bring to a boil.

This year, my Thanksgiving turkey and vegetables will be transformed into my version of Shepherd’s Pie. Traditionally, shepherd’s pie is made with lamb and “cottage pie” is made with beef. This is my twist on these two favorite English casseroles, substituting leftover roast turkey or ham for the meat, whatever leftover vegetables I happened to have on hand for the filling, and a combination of mashed white potatoes and sweet potatoes for the savory topping. Try this Diva-Style Shepherd’s Pie and cure your culinary dilemma this holiday season!

3. Reduce the heat to medium-low and simmer until the mixture is thickened, 6 to 8 minutes. Add the meat and the vegetables, stir well to combine, cook for 2 minutes.

5. Let sit for 10 minutes before serving. Garnish with chopped green onions, parsley or celery leaves, if desired, and serve. Serves 4.

You can double this recipe to use up an abundance of leftovers and freeze one pan to serve later. You can make one version of this Shepherd’s Pie with turkey and the other with ham, if you’d like. Wrap the pan tightly with plastic wrap and cover it with foil. It will keep in the freezer for up to 6 months. 1 tablespoon unsalted butter 4 teaspoons olive oil 1 cup chopped yellow onions 2 teaspoons poultry seasoning 1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper 1/4 teaspoon plus 1/8 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1 teaspoon minced garlic 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour 2 teaspoons tomato paste 1 1/4 cups chicken or turkey stock or canned chicken broth 1 bay leaf 2 to 2 1/2 cups chopped or shredded roast turkey (white and/or dark meat) or baked ham 1 1/2 cups cooked or frozen vegetables, any combination (carrots, corn, green beans, green peas, etc.) 4 cups leftover mashed potatoes (white and/or sweet potatoes, separately or mixed together or Mixed Mashed Potatoes (recipe follows) 3/4 cup grated sharp or medium Cheddar Chopped green onions, parsley or celery leaves (op-

4. Remove from the pan from the heat and discard the bay leaf. Carefully transfer to the prepared dish and spoon the potatoes over the meat mixture, spreading to the edges with a fork. Place pan on a baking sheet. Sprinkle with the cheese and bake until the cheese is bubbly and the potatoes are crisp around the edges, 22 to 25 minutes.

New DVD Releases for Week of November 28, 2011 PICKS OF THE WEEK

“Our Idiot Brother” (R) -- Is the man who sells pot to a uniformed cop an insufferable dolt? Or is he just a refreshingly honest and trusting man in a cynical world? This is the question at the heart of this lighthearted comedy. Paul Rudd puts all of his easygoing charm into Ned, the titular idiot. After his hippie girlfriend kicks Ned out of his organic farm, his three sisters (Zoey Deschanel,

Elizabeth Banks and Emily Mortimer) offer him a place to stay. Ned cycles through being burdensome, charming, obnoxiously burdensome and then somehow redeeming himself. Like Ned, the film creates positivity, even if overdoing it a little bit. “Tucker and Dale Vs. Evil” (R) -- Tucker and Dale (the equally underrated Alan Tudyk and Tyler Labine) are two country boys and best friends taking some time off in a cabin in the woods. To an outsider, the friendly but awkward duo may appear to be straight out of an ‘80s slasher flick. In a series hilarious and brutally unfortunate coincidences, a group of superficial college kids each get themselves killed while under the impression that the pair of sweetnatured rednecks are psychopaths who have kidnapped their friend. To the unseasoned, it’s a comedy complete

with funny lines, likable characters and hilarious misunderstandings. For a horror fan, this is a loving send-up worthy of mocking our favorite movies. “30 Minutes or Less” (R) -- This original comedy about a pizza guy turned human explosive is loud, abrasive and over in a flash. Jesse Eisenberg plays Nick, the small-town loser who gets a bomb strapped to his chest by a pair of bumbling criminals who want him to rob a bank. Nick enlists the reluctant help of an old friend, Chet (Aziz Ansari). Expletives, off-color humor and a speedy disregard for plot holes keep things moving along at a decent pace. Those who can’t get into the profane spirit of things will be quickly left behind. However, fans of Ansari’s brand of humor or Danny McBride’s character acting will get a bursts of laughter from the experience.

16

DOG OF THE WEEK “The Smurfs” (PG) -- I’m going to keep this short. I’ve only got room for one pun, and I just used it. If somebody can find it in themselves to laugh at “smurf” being used in place of every third or fourth word through the course of a movie 100 minutes long, then that person may enjoy this film. For the rest of mankind, it’s a witless 3-D exercise in outdated references and all the compensating self-referential humor.

Low sodium: “Low” is subjective. Check the percentage of daily value on the label. It’s not low if one serving can equal more than half your daily allotment of sodium.

Light: While generally meant to indicate fewer calories, it’s not true across the board. Compare two cans of soup, the regular and the “light” version of the same kind by the same manufacturer. Is there an appreciable difference in calories?

Made with real fruit: How much fruit is actually in the food? If it’s listed after the third item on the ingredients list, you’re not getting much.

60%

Organic: “Certified organic” food is regulated and promises to be grown on land that was pesticide free for the previous three years. With meat, the animals would have been fed a special diet without antibiotics or hormones. “Made with organic ingredients” isn’t the same as wholly organic. Whole grains: The health benefit depends on how much is actually present. See where it falls in the ingredients lineup. If it’s third or fourth on the list, you’re not getting much. Note: Enriched bleached flour is white flour with vitamins added. If “enriched” bread is dark, look for coloring that’s been added to make it appear to be made of whole grains.

Fiber: Which form of fiber is in the food? You’ll need to check the ingredients list. Serving size: Be realistic. If a serving size is a half cup of a dessert, are you going to stop at that half cup? On the other hand, if the food is a main dish, will you family be satisfied with half-cup servings? Know what you’re spending your money on so you can get the most nutrition for your dollar. If you’re not in the habit of reading labels, start by checking at least five things on every label before the food goes into your cart. Choose what those five things will be -- perhaps sodium, protein, sugars, fats and the first three ingredients. It’s a start.
