Alice in Wonderland... Continued from Page 1

she does, Alice grows so big that her head hits the ceiling of the rabbit hole.

In short, “Alice in Wonderland is the story of a girl who follows a fully dressed rabbit, wearing a pocket watch, into the bushes. Alice ends up falling deep into the rabbit’s hole and into the fantasy world of Wonderland, where she encounters a myriad of brilliantly cultivated creatures.

• Alice begins to cry, and her tears flood the hallways of the rabbit hole. She shrinks again after picking up a fan, and begins swimming through her own tears. She then meets a mouse, who is swimming as well. Her tears have created a sea of animals and birds being swept away, clamoring for land.

From the Madd Hatter to the hookahsmoking caterpillar, the characters and twists and turns of the story are often analyzed as parables about the ups and downs of growing up or the crazy cycle of drug addiction.

• Fast forward a bit, and Alice continues to be tall one minute and small the next. Eventually, she sees a caterpillar sitting on a mushroom, smoking a hookah. Alice pours her heart out to the caterpillar about her size-based identity crisis. Before crawling away, the caterpillar tells Alice that one side of the mushroom will make her tall and one side will shrink her.

Some have said Carroll had to be on drugs to write such a crafty, innovative story. However, Carroll never mentioned drugs in his diaries, and today’s drug laws did not exist in the Victorian Era. LSD did not exist, and drugs like opium and cocaine were regularly used for medicinal purposes, available from a pharmacist. If Carroll was under the influence of drugs, it was by accident.

• Alice breaks off two pieces from the mushroom; one side shrinks her smaller than she’s ever been; the other causes her neck to grow high into the trees (a pigeon then mistakes her for a serpent). Alice finally reaches her normal height.

Those who have studied Carroll say his purpose for writing “Alice in Wonderland was strictly to entertain children.

Reading the above, it isn’t a stretch to think that Carroll was on drugs writing this story. The aforementioned are also examples of why a rock ‘n roll legend might have interpreted Alice in Won-

But years later, others would view the book in terms of their own experiences, whether personal or observed. To understand what some might have garnered from the book, it’s important to take a peek inside “Alice in Wonderland.

The “Alice Syndrome “Alice in Wonderland was labeled as a genre of literary nonsense, but one outcome of the story line was its impact on the no-nonsense field of psychiatry. The Alice in Wonderland Syndrome is an actual neurological disorder that affects one’s perception. Signals that are sent from the eyes to the brain are disturbed, causing hallucinations and distortions of space, time and body image. John Todd, a psychiatrist, introduced the disorder in 1955 and named it after Carroll’s “Alice in Wonderland. A key symptom associated with AIWS

The book “Alice in Wonderland also inspired the 1960s hit song by Jefferson Airplane – “White Rabbit, which hit No. 8 (the album, Surrealistic Pillow, was No. 3) on music charts in the U.S. in 1967. Grace Slick wrote the lyrics to the song while she was under the influence of LSD. Slick believed that many characters like the hookahsmoking caterpillar in “Alice in Wonderland were references to drugs, and her lyrics show it. One pill makes you larger And one pill makes you small And the ones that mother gives you Don’t do anything at all

While Alice in Wonderland spawned Slick’s “White Rabbit, in turn, “White Rabbit gave birth to the book, “Go Ask Alice, by Beatrice Sparks.

world of drugs and danger. From the first time she unknowingly drinks a glass of soda laced with LSD at a party, the author of the diary – never named in the book – becomes a victim of addiction. The once-innocent teenager is faced with choices that conflict with feelings of guilt and her desires. Her attempts to get sober fail over and over. A planned Christmas reunion with family is short-lived when she succumbs to drugs again; this time, rendering her to prostitution and a life among the homeless. When a priest takes her under his wing and brings her home to family again, she is taken to an insane asylum, where she finally kicks the drug habit and finds peace with family. When she feels rewarded by her newly found ability to communicate with family and friends, she no longer feels the need to journal in her diary – and the story ends. However, in the epilogue, Sparks notes that the diary’s owner died three weeks after her final entry – death by an overdose, whether accidental or suicide. But the main character in the story is still never revealed.

Alice In Wonderland – The Movie “Alice in Wonderland” the book prompted a Disney cartoon movie; but it also generated a string of films and television movies. To mention a few: • One Hour in Wonderland – 1950 – (television – starring Walt Disney and Edgar Bergen) • Alice through the Looking Glass – 1966 (television) • Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland – 1972 • Alice in Wonderland – 1985 (television) • Dreamchild – 1985 • Alice in Wonderland – 2010

Film director Tim Burton was the latest to bring the book to the screen. Bur-

ton’s “Alice in Wonderland,” released in March 2010, featured 19-year-old Alice, played by Mia Wasikowska, who, while attending a lavish party, sees a white rabbit all dressed up with his pocket watch and follows him into the bushes. She, too, tumbles far down into the rabbit hole and discovers Underland, which is inhabited by a cast of creatures hoping to escape the Red Queen (Helen Bonham Carter), who decapitates anyone who disagrees with her. When the Red Queen kidnaps Alice’s new friend, the Mad Hatter (Johnny Depp), Alice saves Underland by slaying the dragon Jabberwocky and giving the throne back to the White Queen, played by Anne Hathaway.

xamples of success and failure surround us all the time. Within the media, the family unit, the professional work place, and in the mainstream public, we can see the many examples of both success and failure. These examples can lead to false thoughts/beliefs about a person’s own worth regarding success and failure. What if there was a world where success and failure did not exist? What if, instead, we lived in a world where life is simply about exploring, living, loving, and learning? What if there was no such thing as judgment and fear? Many would view the answers as an impossible reality. Maybe it is and maybe it is not. One way to remove judgment and fear is for all to be invested in their own healing process. One process to examine is the false beliefs around success and failure.

While the visual effects pleased audiences, the reviews were disappointing. Many thought the movie was too predictable and conventional, given Carroll’s ingenious and wildly imaginative story.

CHARLES DODGSON

Much of the time the beliefs around success and failure are based on what someone else decided was an example of success and failure. For example, in one family a successful child may be one who earns excellent grades, is popular, does well in sports or other school activities, listens to directions, and goes on to earn many dollars in a well respected career field.

Charles Dodgson’s ingenuity grew in part from entertaining the children of Henry George Liddell, the dean of Christ Church in Oxford. As the oldest son with eight younger siblings, Dodgson was easy and comfortable with children. His affection for children was heightened when he could relate to them despite suffering from a challenging stammer.

In another family, a successful child may be one who gives away his or her birthday and holiday gifts to the needy, spends days off from school at the soup kitchen, and knows the value of recycling. These are two broad examples, and different families will have different definitions of success. But, what if a child born into the family does not follow those examples set forth? What if the child decides to create his or her own definitions of success? What if the attempt, at creating different definitions is made, but the child is told he or she is wrong and that turns into a belief that he or she is a failure? What if the child grows into an adult who has formed the false beliefs that anything he or she does will be a failure, so “why bother trying”? The individual who carries a thought pattern similar to this may find him or herself attempting different careers, academic programs, relationships, and/or living locations all the time. The person may find difficulty in identifying what he or she really wants in life and simply exists without purpose. For this issue, Emotions of Failure treatment is appropriate. Emotion of failure is a pattern because the person has formed an addiction to failure or the results of failure. “Life is a struggle” keeps one in a high beta brain wave. The person always justifies failure and blame. The person may have a victim mentality. This treatment assists people to become aware of emotions of failure and who continue to fail at whatever they are attempting to do or pretend to heal. This will bring into awareness the origin of a pattern and that they can experience a release. If people carry energy of sabotage, it is a 24-hour process, not selective.

PALMER DIVIDE

Under his pen name of Lewis Carroll, Dodgson also wrote a sequel to “Alice in Wonderland.” “Through the Looking Glass” was published in December 1871. Dodgson also penned many poems and essays.

Plumbing, Heating and Electrical

While many writers and artists lean toward the creative side of their brain, Dodgson was just as adept using the analytical side of his brain.

• Faucet Repair • Frozen Pipes • Toilet Replacement • Sprinklers • Plumbing Leaks • Boiler Repair & Service • Garbage Disposals

As an undergraduate, Dodgson excelled in math and divinity studies in 1852 at Christ Church. He received a scholarship and earned a bachelor’s degree and was later appointed as a fellow and mathematics tutor. Under his birth name, Dodgson authored numerous books on mathematics.

 

Dodgson was also an accomplished photographer. He died in 1898, with the titles of English logician, mathematician, photographer and novelist – but best known for “Alice in Wonderland.”

Network Statistics As you begin building your contacts and networks it's really exciting to see how many people you've connected with and how many people are in your extended networks. Remember that for each person you accept as a connection, you become a 2nd degree connection to all of their connections. Go to the Contacts tab at the top of the page and click on Network Statistics. There you will find your totals for 1st, 2nd and 3rd degree connections along with your connection's stats for regions and industries. 13. Add a Video to your Business Page First create business related video or slide presentation and upload it to YouTube.com. LinkedIn has recently allowed people to upload YouTube videos to their Business Page. Simply go to your Business Page and click on 'services' at the top. Select 'add a product or service' and scroll down to the bottom to step 10. Add your video, and fill out the required fields, title, category and description. Remember to include a keyword related to your business to make your video visible to the search engines (SEO). 14. Add a Portfolio of your art, your books, or your products to your LinkedIn Profile! Go to www.Behance.net and create an account. Then go to "Projects" and click on "Create Project". Upload the photos you want in your portfolio and publish your project. When you view your project in the Projects window, you can hover over it and click on "Promote Projects". From here you can fill in your settings for your Linkin, Twitter and Facebook accounts for your Portfolio to be shared with all of your connections!

15. Connect your Linkin and Twitter accounts Killing 2 birds with one stone! LinkedIn Co-founder Reid Hoffman and Twitter Co-founder Biz Stone conclude that their sites go together like chocolate and peanut butter. Join your accounts and all sorts of wonderful things will happen. You can paint a broader picture of your professional interests and ideas by making your Twitter ID appear right on your LinkedIn profile. To add your Twitter account, visit "Edit My Profile" and click "Add Twitter account" next to the Twitter field. Twitter will ask you to verify your account name and password. Once the account is verified, you'll be asked how you'd like to share your tweets on LinkedIn (see below). Note that once your accounts are joined, you can change this setting at any time by clicking "Edit" next to your Twitter account name. Note that in order to send tweets from Twitter to LinkedIn, your Twitter account must be set as public. Make sure the "Protect my tweets" box is not checked in your Twitter Settings.

So grab your kid and throw them I the car (complete with car seat, of course). Hurry down to Pinz (going the speed limit) and take a spot in line. Ask about the coloring contest and get the materials necessary. Then hand it off and let your child do their best. It is, after all, their chance to shine; their chance to exert their creativity. But of course, as a parent you have the responsibility to guide them in every journey. Let them be unique, and give them the wheel, but you can always encourage them to try their best, and color between the lines. The sale of the rights to the script came just in time; he had a total of $106 in his bank account and was trying to sell his dog for lack of the means to feed it.

• Madame Tussaud started creating her famous wax figures in 1777 and created many models during the French Revolution. She traveled around Europe displaying wax figures (both the ones she created and ones she inherited from her mentor), and she opened her first museum in London in 1831. Today there are branches located in the United Kingdom, Amsterdam, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Vienna, Moscow, Bangkok, Dubai, Berlin and Hamburg, plus five U.S. locations. It’s appropriate that there are more locations in America than in any other country, since so many Hollywood celebrities are recreated in the museums. In fact, in 2006, Shiloh, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s baby, became the first infant to be memorialized in wax for Madame Tussauds. • Those who study such things say that apples are more effective than caffeine at waking you up in the morning. • It’s not clear why, but a duck’s quack doesn’t create echoes. *** Thought for the Day: “The trouble with being punctual is that nobody’s there to appreciate it.” -- Franklin P. The winter of 1620-1621 was brutal, and by spring, only 52 of the original 102 Mayflower passengers were still alive. • On Dec. 16, 1773, in Boston Harbor, a group of Massachusetts colonists disguised as Mohawk Indians board three British tea ships and dump 342 chests of tea into the harbor in protest of the British Parliament’s Tea Act of 1773. The value of the tea was more than $700,000 in today’s currency.

Over a period of several weeks, avalanches killed an estimated 10,000 Austrian and Italian soldiers. • On Dec. 17, 1961, a fire at a filled-to-capacity circus in Brazil kills more than 300 people and severely burns 500 more. The cause of the fire was never conclusively determined, but it may have been the result of sparks from a train passing nearby. • On Dec. 15, 1973, Jean Paul Getty III, the grandson of American billionaire J. Paul Getty, is found alive near Naples, five months after his kidnapping by an Italian gang. Getty had initially refused to pay his 16-year-old grandson’s $17 million ransom, but finally agreed after the boy’s severed right ear was sent to a newspaper in Rome.

Since then, all but a 1-yard-wide strip at the start-finish line has been buried under asphalt. Kissing those bricks after a successful race remains a tradition among Indy drivers.

ANTIBIOTICS USUALLY END KIDNEY INFECTION DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I am recuperating from a kidney infection (pyelitis). The doctor did a culture of my urine, which showed a gram negative rod. What kind of infection is that? -- S.B. ANSWER: The more common urinary tract infection is infection of the bladder -- cystitis. Pyelitis (PIE-uh-LITE-iss), now usually called pyelonephritis, is an infection of the kidney itself. It is a much more serious infection, and one that usually makes people take to their bed. Pyelitis causes high fever often alternating with chills. People have intense flank pain, the side area between the lowest rib and the upper part of the pelvis. The infection also might make people urinate more frequently and with pain. These two signs, however, are more apt to indicate bladder infection. The most frequent cause of pyelitis is the bacterium E. coli. Bacteria are classified into two large groups based on how they react to a stain used to visualize them with a microscope. The stain is the Gram stain, named after the doctor who devised it. Bacteria are either gram positive or gram negative. A gram positive bacterium turns blue with the stain; a gram negative turns red. Bacteria also are classified by their shape. Some are elongated sticks -- rods. Others are oval-shaped. E. coli is a gram negative rod. Pyelitis is a situation that calls for immediate and usually intravenous antibiotic treat-

The booklet on urinary tract infections describes both upper urinary tract infections (kidney -- pyelitis) and lower urinary tract infections (bladder -- cystitis). Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 1204W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. DONOHUE: I have seborrheic keratoses and have had them for many years. Doctors say nothing can be done. I had them cut off and frozen off, but they come right back. Can you help?

ANSWER: I’ve never heard the term “milk leg” used by a doctor, but I have seen it in print. Today the condition is called thrombophlebitis (THROM-boh-flea-BITE-iss) -- a clot (thrombo) in an inflamed vein (phlebitis). In milk leg, the vein is the femoral vein, the large leg vein. It can be a complication of pregnancy even today.

ANSWER: Seborrheic (SEBuh-REE-ik) keratoses are brown, wartylooking spots on the back, chest, arms, legs and sometimes the face. They are not cancers and don’t become cancers. There may be only a few, but there can be hundreds of them. Their cause is a mystery, but they appear at older ages, so aging is somehow involved. A doctor can scrape them off or freeze them. They might come back, but they can be retreated if they do. The tendency to develop them is inherited. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Years ago, after the birth of my son, the doctor said I had milk leg. It was very painful. What would this be called today? -- A.R.

WRAPPING UP GIFTS ON A BUDGET

Y

ears ago, Forest and I experience a rough time with our finances. The three of us were living on $850/month from unemployment. That Christmas, I wanted to thank the people who had helped us. I mentioned this idea to Forest and he casually said sure, until I gave him ‘my list!’ On that list were 300 names! “300 people” – he exploded! “We don’t even know 300 people!” I started going through the people (and of course their kids) and we did in fact know that many people. He said we don’t have any extra money

- - remember?? I decided to figure out a way to thank all of these people. A couple asked me to make a wedding dress for their daughter and she paid me $300. Now, how could I make gifts for 300 people on $300? I happened to see a picture of a gift bag from simple brown paper sacks in a magazine. My creative mind pictured gorgeous bags. As a result of that simple idea, I did in fact give 300 gifts for less than $300 that year. We had a lot of ‘gift bags’ to make and I finally asked Forest to help with 30. If you know Forest, you know he waited until the last minute. One evening we had about 10 friends over for a dinner (to receive their gifts). After dinner, Forest was in charge of entertainment. he did? Yes, he got everyone into a circle, handed out paper bags and the 12 of us each made 3 gift bags (he wanted to give me ‘extra’!). Of course, I was upset he hadn’t done it on his own. He was smiling from ear to ear that he had figured out how to meet his commitment and have fun in the process. How typical of us! I’m so thankful I’m learning how to be more like him and have more fun! The biggest gift I received that Christmas was realizing that giving is not defined by the amount of money in my checkbook or cash in my wallet - - - it is defined by the

edicare has added another preventive service to our benefits: a yearly consultation with our health-care provider to look at ways to prevent cardiovascular disease, such as coronary heart disease and stroke. This additional consultation can include exploring changes to diet, screening for hypertension and more. Until now, the covered service was a blood test every five years. The list of Medicare preventive services is long, and it’s to our benefit to use as many of these as our doctors think we need. Here is a sample of what is available: • Colon cancer screenings: Can include a colonoscopy every 24 to 120 months, depending on your level of risk for colon cancer. CHECK HOLIDAY LISTS TWICE!

A

s the holiday season approaches, many of us have holiday parties and gatherings to plan. In these tough economic times, we face the daunting task of keeping alive our family traditions without breaking our budget. The good news is that by being creative and planning carefully, and making lists, you still can make this season fun and memorable.

7. Pay attention at the checkout. Don’t lose out on a great deal because an item scans incorrectly.

488-6917

8. If you’re hosting a holiday gathering, ask for help with meal preparation. This will help relieve some of the financial burden. Contact everyone on your holiday guest list and see who can bring a dish to share. Guests traveling from out of town may not be able to bring perishable items, but they can grab some nonperishables on their way in. Make sure you coordinate who’s bringing what to avoid overlap. 9. Include a variety of meatless dishes, like my recipe for Penne Pasta With Pumpkin Sauce. You may have some of the ingredients on hand from Thanksgiving, or they may be on sale. Meatless meals are often cheaper and, as a bonus, generally healthier, too.

1. Establish your budget and how much you can afford to spend. Design a menu around your budget and what is seasonal or on sale at the grocery store. Next, write a list of who will be invited. Your budget will guide you on the number of guests you can comfortably invite.

10. Help others. How about serving some homemade food or giving a grocery-store gift certificate to a family in need? This is the greatest investment you can make for your money during the holiday season. Happy holidays!

3. Use coupons! In most cases, grocery stores have great sales on holiday staples like turkeys and hams. Their goal is to get you into the store with the hope that you’ll buy lots of other products that are not on sale. Use this to your advantage, but only buy items you need. Check for online coupons as well. Start with the website of the store where you shop or of products you use. Shopping on double or triple coupon days can save you a lot of money.

2. Keep a grocery list so you’re less likely to make an impulse purchase. A list also should prevent you from making extra trips to the store. Stick to your list for added savings, but stay flexible if you come across a sale.

New DVD Releases for Week of December 12, 2011 PICKS OF THE WEEK

“Fright Night” (R) -- This ‘80s classic had to be resurrected to cash in on the sexy vampire trend, but at least this supernatural thriller’s undead heart is in the right place. Charlie (Anton Yeltsin) is a high school senior who thinks he has it all. When people in the neighborhood go missing, a trail of evidence indicates that Charlie’s mysterious neighbor (Colin Farrell) is actually a vampire. While the movie isn’t especially

scary, viewers will be drawn in by talented performances and a script that drums on the raw nerves of the psyche. Farrell’s vampire radiates the right level of predatory seduction that congeals into a memorable and multi-dimensional monster. Whether it’s Charlie’s desire for maturity, his single mother’s desperation or his girlfriend’s youthful beauty and vulnerability, “Fright Night” knows how to get under the skin and add weight to the climactic conflict. “Kung Fu Panda 2” (PG) -- After realizing his potential and achieving his dream of being the Dragon Warrior, Po the Panda (voiced by an emphatic Jack Black) learns his Kung Fu adventure is just beginning. When an evil force using a new weapon threatens the realm and the future of Kung Fu, Po and the Furious Five engage on a mesmerizing series of action sequences to save the day. This spectacle is less of a touch-

ing morality tale and more of a wild actioncomedy for the kids. While the storytelling lacks discipline, Dreamworks earns a black belt in visual splendor and creative combat. “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” (PG-13) -- This out-of-the-blue reboot sticks to the good old “We’re the REAL monsters” theme, but manages to win the war against the stale flavor of another out-of-the-blue franchise reboot. Smarty-pantsed apes decide that being used as test subjects isn’t so great, and an army of primate anarchists is formed. Caesar, the computer-animated ape with super smarts, is a wondrous achievement made from computer wizardry and the best motion-capture actor in the biz, Andy Serkis (Smeagol in “Lord of the Rings” and the big guy in the 2005 “King Kong.”) The story and the themes are predictable, but the emotional bond between

14

James Franco and a super-sympathetic CG ape is a true surprise. “City of God” (R) [Blu-ray] -- This rerelease of the 2002 urban drama is a good chance for those who’ve missed out to finally see this unique epic. In the slums around Rio De Janeiro, every alley and apartment is pregnant with human stories. In the lifetime of two boys from the neighborhood, we see innocence, crime, love and an all-out war between a gang lord and one man who stood up against the poison in his city.
