n 46 B.C., Julius Caesar, under the Julian calendar, was the ďŹ rst to ofďŹ cially declare Jan. 1 the start of a new year. The month of January was named after the Roman god Janus, who wore two faces – one looking forward and one looking backward. In most countries in Western Europe, Jan. 1 became the ofďŹ cial start of the new year. However, during the Middle Ages England celebrated the beginning of a new year on March 25 – the Feast of the Annunciation. In 1752, Pope Gregory XIII introduced the Gregorian calendar, which included a leap year every four years. Under the Gregorian calendar, England, in conjunction with Western Europe, adopted Jan. 1 as the official kick-off to the new year. New Year Traditions... Continued on Page 2

are deemed to have luck on their side for a lifetime. And many hospitals kick off that good luck by awarding money or a prize to the first baby born in their care as the new year rings in.

New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day traditions began with Caesar and have evolved throughout the years – all the while focused on feasts and festivities. Hotels, restaurants, pubs and clubs organized New Year’s Eve dances and parties.

TIMES SQUARE In 1904, The New York Times owner, German Jewish immigrant Alfred Ochs, decided to throw a New Year’s Eve party in celebration of the city’s decision (at his urging) to rename Longacre Square (the district surrounding the NYT’s headquarters) Times Square.

Customs that originated worldwide were brought to America – and today remain part of the New Year’s holiday hoopla.

THE SYMBOLS

The Times Tower building at 7th Avenue, Broadway and 42nd Street was Manhattan’s second-tallest building, with three huge sub-basements; and the center of Ochs’ New Year’s Eve gala. More than 200,000 people attended the first all-day festival that included an evening of fireworks and midnight merrymaking with horns, noisemakers, rattles and loud cheers.

Like Santa Claus and his reindeer, New Year’s has its trademarks as well.

Father Time “Father Time” – who has forever been an insignia of New Year’s – is actually time personified as a bearded old man, wearing a robe and holding a scythe and hourglass. Father Time is from the Greek god Cronus, whom the Romans called Saturn, god of agriculture. Saturn is usually associated with the sowing of seeds and the tilling of the soil. Although often thought of as one, the Greek god Cronus is not related to chronos, one of many Greek words for “time.” Father Time has also been linked to the Holy King, the Celtic god of the dying year. In many circles, Father Time is considered the spouse of Mother Nature.

flagpole at midnight, symbolic of the transition from 1907 to 1908. Ochs inspired a tradition that would eventually grab the attention of the world as the party of all New Year’s Eve parties. Today, an estimated one million people line the streets of Times Square to watch the ball drop. More than one billion people worldwide watch from the comfort of their living rooms. This year, at 11:59 p.m. New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and the host of the show will push a button that starts the New Year’s Eve ball’s highly anticipated descent. The countdown begins with 60 seconds on the clock, the time it takes the ball to drop the 70 feet. The ball is a geodesic square, which is 12 feet in diameter, and weighs 11,875 pounds. The ball is covered with 2,688 Waterford crystal triangles and lit by 32,256 Phillips Luxeon Reble LEDs. At midnight, the lights of the ball are turned off to reveal the brightly colored

Two years after the first party, the city banned fireworks; and Ochs arranged to have a 700-pound illuminated iron and wood ball lowered from the tower

BLACK-EYED PEAS AND GREENS

In 1890, the Valley Hunt Club of Pasadena, Calif., decided to sponsor a midwinter holiday event to promote the warm California sun to people living in snowy, cold climates. The club hosted a variety of spectator sports such as chariot races, jousting competitions, foot races, polo games and tug-ofwar challenges. Because California’s flowers were in bloom in the midst of winter, the club added a pre-games parade featuring carriages decorated with fresh roses and other flowers. Eventually, the “Rose Parade or the “Rose Bowl Parade became another New Year’s Day ritual, watched by about 47 million American viewers – and millions worldwide.

• The cost of the oats varies from $75,000 to almost $500,000, depending on size and design.

New Year Traditions... Continued from Page 3

Cooked greens like cabbage, collards, kale and chard are eaten all over the world on New Year’s Day for a financial reason: their green leaves resemble folded money – another symbol of good fortune. Pork is another widely served dish on New Year’s Day. Pigs supposedly symbolize progress because they root themselves in the ground before moving or pushing forward. And the rich fat content of the meat signifies wealth and prosperity. Avoid the following foods: lobster because they move backward and eating one could lead to setbacks during the year; and chicken because the bird scratches backward, which could cause regret or dwelling on the past. Don’t eat any winged fowl because good luck might fly away.

TIMES GONE BY The song of the midnight hour on New Year’s Eve is “Auld Lang Syne,” a Scottish song first published in 1796 by poet Robert Burns, who later refined the lyrics. “Auld Lang Syne” translates in English to “old long since” or “times gone by.” Bandleader Guy Lombardo popularized the song and created a New Year’s tradition. Lombardo’s band played the song at midnight at a New Year’s Eve party at the Roosevelt Hotel in New York City in 1929, and from the 1930s to 1976 his version was played every New Year’s Eve at the Waldorf Astoria. Also broadcast on radio and television, it was once written in Life magazine that if Lombardo’s “Auld Lang Syne” didn’t play on New Year’s, Americans wouldn’t believe a new year had arrived.

A KISS AT MIDNIGHT The custom of kissing loved ones at the stroke of midnight on New Year’s Eve is not only a show of affection but also a kiss of promise that the affection and love will endure throughout the year. A study published in December 2008 showed that more people planned to kiss their pet at midnight than a human

ost children are taught to feel shame at some point in their lives. That may come from any environment. When children are taught to be ashamed, they grow into adults who feel shame. That shame is never productive and covers the energy of passion. Passion is critical when one wants to seek a state of joy that remains present.

Since 1903, members of the Coney Island Polar Bear Club in New York City have sponsored a New Year’s Day “dip” in the freezing cold waters of the Atlantic Ocean. About 700 men, women and children are expected to take the plunge this year. The president of the club, Dennis Thomas, spoke with Time magazine and said the activity is a “cathartic and cleansing experience.” All of the stress, pressures of job and family, etc. disappear when one is treading icy waters. Of course, who thinks of anything else when one’s survival is dependent on preventing hypothermia?

Sometimes, people carry the perception that children need to be shamed in order to prevent future negative or ‘bad’ behaviors. Rather, a child who is taught to be ashamed of himself or herself will develop a false belief around self-worth. That false belief can be conscious or subconscious. What if, instead of teaching shame, which can be seen as convenient, everyone taught compassion, consequences of actions, and integrity? If a child has learned those elements, he or she would not feel the need to engage in negative or ‘bad’ behavior. However, teaching compassion, consequences of actions, and integ-

Bernarr Macfadden, an avid fitness and natural health guru way ahead of his time (1868-1955), founded the Coney Island Polar Bear Club to encourage others to swim in the ocean in the dead of winter to gain stamina, virility and immunity. The Coney Island club also goes for “winter” swims on occasions other than New Year’s. The New Year’s Day plunge brought a lot of attention, and soon other cities were picking up the idea of a midwinter splash extravaganza.

rity is not convenient and it takes walking the ‘talk’. As a result, we have many people who carry shame. That shame covers up passion. The ability to feel passion also comes from the ability to feel self-compassionate. But, how can one feel self-compassionate when he or she is feeling ashamed? That person will not feel self-compassion, unless he or she works at healing the shame. A way to heal shame is to uncover the origin of shame teaching, understanding how the shame has been operating, and then begin making different choices in how the shame is engaged. Stop engaging the shame. That does not mean suppress it; it means to honestly look at shame, its origin (without judgment), and to diligently begin making new choices. To assist with feeling passion, a person needs to increase self-compassion and can also receive the Tai Yi treatment, Brain Passion. Brain Passion creates heat in the body and is a clearing treatment as well as a treatment to assist in a person creating new patterns. This treatment clears old energy within the meridians. The person, assuming he or she is working at healing shame and feeling self-compassionate, can expect to begin feeling passionate about life as a result of this treatment.

PALMER DIVIDE

For the last 20 years, the Polar Ice Plunge takes place New Year’s Day in the frigid waters of Lake Minnetonka in one of the coldest states in the U.S. – Minnesota. But before the brave people can even dive in, a chainsaw is used to cut through more than 25 inches of ice on the lake.

The air temperature is not pretty – one year, it was 5 degrees, which made the 33-degree water seem like a piece of cake. More than 1,000 people jumped in that year – all made it out alive, but the hairs on their heads turned into icicles.

MOMENTS IN TIME THE HISTORY CHANNEL

• On Jan. 1, 1876, the first area-wide New Year’s Day Mummers’ Parade is held in Philadelphia. Mummers’ celebrations in America date back to colonial times. Reciting doggerel and receiving in return cakes and ale, groups of five to 20 people, their faces blackened, would march from home to home, shouting and discharging firearms into the air. • On Dec. 28, 1895, the world’s first commercial movie screening takes place at the Grand Cafe in Paris. The film was a series of short scenes from everyday French life. Admission was charged for the first time. • On Dec. 27, 1900, prohibitionist Carry Nation smashes up the bar at the Carey Hotel in Wichita, Kansas, causing several thousand dollars in damage and landing in jail. Nation became famous for carrying a hatchet and wrecking saloons as part of her anti-alcohol crusade. • On Dec. 30, 1922, in post-revolutionary Russia, the Union of Soviet Socialist Repub-

lics is established. In the USSR, all levels of government were controlled by the Communist Party. Soviet industry was owned and managed by the state, and agricultural land was divided into state-run collective farms. • On Dec. 31, 1937, Anthony Hopkins is born in Port Talbot, Wales. Hopkins is known for playing one of the greatest villains in movie history, the cannibalistic serial killer Hannibal Lecter in “The Silence of the Lambsâ€? and its two sequels, “Hannibalâ€? and “Red Dragon.â€? • On Dec. 29, 1940, London suffers its most devastating air raid when Germans firebomb the city. The next day, a newspaper photo of St. Paul’s Cathedral standing undamaged amid the smoke and flames seemed to symbolize the capital’s unconquerable spirit during the Battle of Britain. • On Dec. 26, 1966, the first day of the first Kwanzaa is celebrated in Los Angeles. The seven-day holiday is a celebration of African-American family, community and cultural values, which include unity, selfdetermination, collective work and responsibility, economic cooperation, purpose, creativity and faith. I am positive that equally confusing information will be forthcoming.

The best advice I have read is this: If a woman truly savors drinking wine, one glass a day is relatively safe in regard to breast cancer. The benefits of heart health and prevention of stroke are not so great that they should induce anyone to change from being a nondrinker to a drinker.

ANSWER: Welcome to the army of nutrition confusion. What’s good one day might be life-threatening the next. I don’t rely on one report. I stick to what the majority says. If the majority changes its mind, then I change. Wine and other alcoholic drinks lower the incidence of heart disease and, apparently, strokes. That’s the current majority thinking. Moderate drinkers of alcohol -- wine in particular -- have a lower overall mortality rate than do alcohol abstainers and heavy drinkers. “Moderate” drinking is one glass of wine, one 12-ounce can of beer or 1.5 ounces of whiskey for women; it’s two for men. The role of wine (or alcohol) in promoting breast cancer is less clear. Analysis of 40 studies shows an increase in breast cancer for women downing three or more drinks a day. The same studies suggest that even one or two daily drinks might pose a slight danger. Other studies show an increase in lobular breast cancer with one drink a day, but no increase in ductal breast cancer. Ductal cancer is the most common kind of breast cancer.

WINE -GOOD OR BAD? DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I am thoroughly confused. Several months ago, I read of the benefit of wine for women. The conclusion was that it reduced a woman’s chances of heart attack and stroke by 30 percent. My husband and I have started to drink one glass of wine a day. Now comes a new report that says just one glass of wine a day increases the chances for breast cancer. Should I be concerned? -- M.T.

*** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: How much stress does sex put on the heart? I don’t have a heart problem. I know two fellow workers, who, according to scuttlebutt, died while having sex. They were about my age. -- R.L. ANSWER: Scuttlebutt isn’t a reliable source of information.

Blood pressure and heart rate rise during sexual relations, but not so much as to be a source of concern for most men and women, even those who have had a heart attack. The energy expenditure is approximately the same as climbing two flights of stairs. That is, walking, not running, up those flights.

MEDICAL CARE IS NOT THE SAME AS HEALTH CARE! 2012 is upon us. Do you realize that you may see many more years to come - - you might even live to be 80, 90 or 100! The ‘quality’ of those years is largely under your control. Many problems that are surrendered to doctors are the results of 20, 30, 40 years of problems with our lifestyle, not doctors doing a poor job. Henry S. Lodge,

I’m blessed to see our daughter enjoy life, having beat a sugar addiction, lost weight, and traveling around the country sharing this message of health care!

The “Normal Aging” process is anything but normal. The worst thing that can happen is to grow ‘old’ and live! That represents a lack of quality in your life, a drain on your family and the nation. We can change that by deciding to “LIVE” and enjoy life every day we are blessed to have it.

Our family is no different than any other family other than we decided 20 years ago to become responsible for our health. When I suffered a complete health breakdown at 35 I knew I was facing serious choices. Depression and suicide or change my approach to life. I chose the later and my life has never been the same.

hose of us who have pets know the benefits of pet ownership. There’s just something very physically and emotionally positive about owning a cat or dog, and the research literature is full of proof. We generally have lower blood pressure because pets reduce stress and anxiety. Maybe it’s the soft fur to pet, the funny antics or the happy welcome when we come home, but we’re happier and better able to fend off depression. We’re also in better shape, more active and physical, because of the care we need to give: walking, throwing toys, feeding, bending to put down food and water, daily brushing. Limited incomes can come into play, however. If you have a pet but are considering giving it up because of

If you receive Meals on Wheels or another program, they often have pet food they can deliver too. Your first calls should be to the local humane society, the pet store or the veterinarian: They’re the ones most likely to know about programs available in your area. LEFTOVERS FOR LUNCH

A

fter the holiday feasts are over, I always want flavors that are polar opposite of the turkey, ham, dressing and sides I’ve cooked and eaten recently. I usually crave Mexican food -- partly because I live in the Southwest, but also because the spicy ingredients differ wildly from my traditional holiday recipes. I’ve learned a few tricks to use my leftovers in combination with the flavors I crave to create great dishes like these Turkey Soft Tacos. Leftover turkey works beautifully with the spices in this recipe. The salsa adds moisture to the cooked turkey and a peppery flavor. The tacos are perfect for lunch or a light supper.

488-6917

TURKEY SOFT TACOS 1 1/4 pounds cooked turkey meat, white, dark or combination 1 1/2 tablespoons olive oil 1 medium red onion, finely chopped 4 teaspoons paprika 1 teaspoon ground cumin 1 teaspoon chili powder 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 2 cups salsa, hot or medium plus more for topping, if desired 1 can (15 ounces) black beans, rinsed and drained 1 cup frozen corn, thawed or leftover cooked corn 8 flour tortillas (8 inches) 2 cups Iceberg or Romaine lettuce, shredded 1 cup shredded reduced-fat Mexican cheese blend 1 large tomato, sliced into 8 pieces 1 large avocado, peeled and sliced 1 tablespoon minced fresh cilantro

aside. In a large skillet, heat oil and add in onion, paprika, cumin, chili powder, cayenne pepper, salt and black pepper. Cook over medium heat until the onion is tender, about 3 minutes. Add salsa, beans and corn; cook and stir for 2 minutes or until heated through. 2. Wrap the tortillas in food-safe paper towels and sprinkle both sides with water. Place tortillas in microwave and heat on HIGH for 30 seconds or until warm and pliable.

3. Place about 1/2 cup turkey mixture down the center of each tortilla; 1. Shred the turkey meat and set top with 1/4 cup lettuce and 1 table-

11

spoon cheese. Fold sides of tortilla over filling. Serve with tomato, avocado, cilantro and remaining cheese and salsa. Makes 4 (2 taco) servings. *** Angela Shelf Medearis is known as The Kitchen Diva and is the executive producer and host of “The Kitchen Diva!” cooking show on HULU.com. New DVD Releases for Week of December 26, 2011 PICKS OF THE WEEK “Brighton Rock” -- A handsome hoodlum murders a man at the Brighton Boardwalk, and the only loose end is a pretty young witnessing waitress who says she never forgets a face. Pinkie (Sam Riley) then seduces the naive Rose (Andrea Riseborough), figuring that even if he has to murder or marry her, it beats getting the death penalty in the last year before it’s outlawed.

What follows is a smoldering -- if a little slow and melodramatic -- story of a good Catholic girl who falls hard for the wrong bad boy. Riley’s brooding Brit feels a little too one-sided. He knows what game he’s playing and doesn’t seem all that conflicted about it. The themes from the source novel by Graham Greene are well-preserved, and that adds the necessary weight to the story. Is Rose’s faithful nature her secret strength, or is it leading her to the slaughter? “Apollo 18” -- It’s found-footage madness from the dark side of the moon! It turns out that there was one more top-secret moon mission in 1974, and the classified footage collected by the astronauts tells the real story of why we never went back. Budgetary concerns and shifting policies had little to do with it -- creepy crawlies hiding under moon rocks is what scared mankind away from our greatest symbolic achievement.

All the parts are in place -- isolation, unfamiliar terrain, claustrophobic settings and a premise that suspends enough disbelief -- but the second-phase rockets never kick in, so this not-so-scary dud never makes it into orbit. What’s missing from the mission checklist is suspense, characters we care about, sufficient thrills and a script. This one shoots for the moon and somehow lands among the “Blair Witch” sequels. “Final Destination 5” -- Like so many decent horror franchises before it, “Final Destination” embraces repetition, and it works. Once again, a lone nobody gets a clairvoyant glimpse of massive freak accident (this time it’s a bridge collapse) just in time to save a few people, forming a diverse cast of folks who will die one by one in their own, personalized freak accidents. No monster, no psychopath, just the raw malice of fate and gruesome occupational hazards.

12

DOG OF THE WEEK “A Good Old Fashioned Orgy” -- It’s not funny. It’s not sexy. It’s not worth seeing. Jason Sudeikis should not burn any bridges at “Saturday Night Live,” because between “Hall Pass” and this irredeemable mess, his movie career is courting the short theatrical run enjoyed by sexless sex-comedies for unfunny Gen Xers. And I didn’t even know that was a genre.

The song went to No. 1 in more than a dozen countries. 5. “King of Pain.” Originally released on the “Synchronicity” album, the song broke out and climbed to the top of the charts. 6. “It Must Have Been Love.” The song got a boost when it appeared on the soundtrack for the film “Pretty Woman.”

TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Change lies ahead for the brave Bovine who is ready to shuck off the tried and true to try something new. But appearances can be deceptive. Check it all out before you charge into anything. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) This week promises a peek into what the new year holds for the Gemini Twins, both in love and careers. Family matters continue to be a factor in decisions you’re going to be facing. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) As you move into the new year, your travel aspects grow stronger, and you might find yourself making decisions about a destination and a traveling companion sooner than you’d expected. LEO (July 23 to August 22) The new year holds both glitter and gold. This means Leos and Leonas should begin getting the facts they’ll need to separate the real thing from the sham in order to make important decisions next year. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A good way to start the new year might be to arrange for a visit to someone you haven’t seen in a long time. You also might want to pick up that project you put off a while back.

13

SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Someone close to you might feel you have no more room for him or her in your life. This calls for immediate reassurance of your love so you can start the new year on a high note. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) The coming year will bring more people into your life. Some situations might not work out as well as others. But overall, everyone earns something, and that’s always a good thing. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) The new year could find you indulging in one or more of the hobbies you’ve always wanted to take up. And don’t be surprised if they ultimately direct you toward a new career. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) The artistic Aquarian should find more opportunities in the new year. You might even make some potentially helpful contacts as you gather to ring in the year 2012. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) The new year offers challenges for Pisceans who want to make better use of the skills they now have and learn new ones. Personal relationships show stronger positive aspects. BORN THIS WEEK: Although you sometimes tend to be a bit judgmental, nevertheless, you are generous and caring and very much beloved. Facing the Facebook Revolution, Part 1 Series 4, Article 7

What is this Facebook thing? You can think of Facebook as your personal Bulletin Board. (Be sure to go to "Privacy Settings" and indicate that only people you have labeled as "friends" can see your profile and your wall.) This is where you let all your friends and relatives know what you are up to. You can share photos from your last vacation and your friends can let you know how jealous they are! You can share links to videos or articles that you find interesting too. Treat your "wall" just like you would a bulletin board. Check it for messages from people, ideas and comments about current affairs, photos they post, or even chat with them live while you are online. It can be a great way to keep in contact with friends and family, and even find long lost friends that you haven't spoken to in years. Your Online Message Board Ever want to jot a quick "hi" to someone without having to write a long detailed email or get stuck on the phone for ½ hour? Ever want to let a bunch of friends know what's going on in your life without having to call or email each one….and without doing the dreaded mass email, which seems so impersonal? Posting updates on your life on Facebook is an easy way to update everyone without making people feel carbon-copied. Your Online Photo Album In addition to keeping up with friends and family, Facebook is a great place to upload family photos, vacation photos, party or holiday photos, etc. Rather than having to pull out the photo album when people are over at the house, your friends and family can pull up your Facebook page and see your photos easily. Facebook for Finding Old Friends Have you ever wonder whatever happened to the boy next door? Or your best friend from elementary school? With more and morepeople joining Facebook, it is becoming a great place to look upold friends and getting back in

touch. Historically, guys from your past have always been easier to find years later because guys don't change their last names when they get married. But to find an old girlfriend?...Impossible! Now with Facebook, most females list their married last name(s) hyphenated with their maiden name, making them easier to find! Of course it will always to more difficult to find a John Smith than a Gertrude Oppenheimer because of the sheer number of matching profiles you will have to look through, but the process is far easier thanks to Facebook.

Facebook PROFILE for Business You can also use your regular Facebook Profile to connect with co-workers and old co-workers to keep the workplace networking going. It's a fact that one of the best ways to find a new job is to be recommended by a friend, so keeping up with business contacts can be very important. Facebook PAGES for Business Unlike your personal Facebook Profile, which is titled with your first and last name(s), your Facebook Page will be titled with the name of your business. Using your Facebook Profile is a great way to connect with people, but if you want to promote your business, a regular Facebook Profile is not the place to do that. A Facebook Page is a public profile that enables you to share your business and products with Facebook users. When your fans interact with your Facebook Page, stories linking to your Page can go to their friends via News Feed. As these friends interact with your Page, News Feed keeps driving word-of-mouth to a wider circle of friends. What's great about a Facebook Page is that anyone can see it, "like" it and share it with all their friends, which adds more and more exposure for your business….for free! Watch for my articles in the upcoming issues to learn tricks and tips on Using Facebook Pages to build your business!

THE SOLUTION TO A TACKY RESOLUTION

n annual tradition, your friends and relatives will announce to you and anyone else who doesn’t care, their usual New Years Resolution. The following is a list of typical resolutions, good and bad, and how they can improve: Typical Resolution Number 1: “I’m going to quit smoking” – We’ve all heard this joke before. Then four days later in the middle of the blizzard you find the “former smoker” in a tank and flip flops shivering around in the cold to get one last sweet puff of the tobacco stick. Let’s not waste our time with empty promises.

Solution: Keep smoking, if that’s what you want to do (though Snippetz and Pinz want what’s best for your health). Instead quit living room television. It’s just as unhealthy of a habit, and unlike smoking, causes serious social-life damage. Instead, watch TV at Rodz Bar and Grill, and catch every big game on the largest screen in the TriLakes area! Typical Resolution Number 2: “I’m going to get a promotion.” – Let’s be realistic here. Like you have any say in how much money you make. Unless of course you’re your own boss, in which case giving yourself a raise is heavily frowned upon by your employees, the media, and mankind in general. Solution: Volunteer work. It’s like a promotion without the pay. Join a Bowling league next year at Pinz, and work your way to being a League coordinator or president. You can even give the whole community a raise by (insert cheap plug for Pinz Co-Owner Gloria McCartan here ) volunteering for the 2012 Palmer Lake Fireworks Committee. Or at least dole them over some cash if, by chance, you do get a raise. Typical Resolution Number 3: “I’m going to get in shape/lose weight/work out more” – This is the most common, perhaps, of our typical resolutions countdown. Admirable, sure, but often unrealistic; why you say? It’s simple time and money. Who has an hour a day and extra cash for a gym membership? And who really wants to work out (be quiet athletic people). Solution: BOWLING! It’s fun, and just a half-hour of bowling a day is good for a work out. It’s also affordable. Dollar Daze is Tuesday and Thursday after 4pm. They’re a cheap effective way to lose the holiday pounds. Not to mention joining a league next year. It’ll keep you working, as well as reward you with dollar bowling all the time! Bowling is the cheapest, most enjoyable way to get in shape in 2012. For more information on how to achieve pure bliss in the year 2012, please contact your local Pinz representative at (719) 487-7469

CHARITABLE CONTRIBUTIONS

A

s the tax year comes to a close, you might want to clean out that attic or closet full of unneeded stuff and donate it to others. Remember, the IRS allows you to deduct contributions to churches and charities (such as Goodwill, Salvation Army, Susan G. Komen, etc.). As a side note, Goodwill Industries depends on donations to fulfill its mission of providing skill development and work opportunities for people with disabili-

ties. Currently, Goodwill channels 84% of revenues into job training programs to benefit thousands of people across the country. By donating your used household items to Goodwill, you can help others and pocket yourself a nice tax deduction. Gifts of cash up to $250 and merchandise up to $250 do not require receipts. Remember that you can only deduct current value, not the original value or the price you paid. If you have receipts from an organization without values, reasonable estimates are acceptable. Goodwill for example will only list the number of bags or boxes you do-

15

nated- you can visit www.goodwillsp. org/priceguide.html to see a current general price list of many items sold at Goodwill- this is a good representation and can be used for other charities. Another suggestion is take pictures as proof or evidence of the quantity and condition of the items donated. If you are donating a bag of clothes, this is perhaps unnecessary. But if you are donating more expensive items such as appliances, books, household items, etc., pictures might tell a thousand words. This can also prove invaluable for large estate donations as well.

Next week we’ll explore how to make your 2012 taxes easier to manage. If you have additional questions or need assistance, please contact Tina Watson CPA at tinawatsoncpa@gmail. com or visit her website at www.tinawatsoncpa.com.
