hhh – the post-holiday blues – or not! Some people breathe a sigh of relief that the holidays have passed, and others actually mourn the end of the season, for whatever reason. But retail personnel have no time for either – they’re still on the defense, rushed by post-holiday sales shoppers and the return of undesirable gifts. Some retail workers had to work on Christmas, like the clerks at Rite Aid and Walgreen’s. The luckier retail workers who had December 25 off were probably exhausted from the grueling hours they put in to ensure everyone else had a merry one. And is 24 hours enough to revive the retail workers who had to greet the post-Christmas crowd on December 26? A Post Holiday Look at Retail... Continued on Page 2

A Post Holiday Look at Retail... Continued from Page 1 The good thing: There were jobs available.

A BOOST The “Philadelphia Business Journal” reported Dec. 5 that the number of November hires this year for the holiday season was the largest since November 2007. According to the consulting firm of Challenger, Gray & Christmas Inc., retailers added 423,500 hires in November – the largest increase since November 2007 (pre-recession), when 465,400 were hired. Last year, 332,700 retail workers hired on in November. In 2008, only 213,500 retail workers were hired in November.

• Kohl’s has 1,089 stores nationwide, and about 35 sales associates were hired per store for the holiday season. Another 2,000-plus workers were hired for distribution centers and credit operations.

• Clothing stores showed a 33 percent jump between November and December 2010; electronic store sales increased 44 percent; sporting goods stores 58 percent; bookstores 92 percent and jewelry stores a whopping 113 percent.

• Limited Brands Inc., owner of big retailers like Victoria’s Secret and Bath & Body Works, was hiring more than 50,000 workers for the Christmas season.

• In December, jewelry store sales were 20 percent of the 2010 total sales in the industry; 14 percent for the same in department stores. • In the U.S., inventory in department stores increased from Aug. 31 to Nov. 30 in 2010 by 24 percent; inventory counts fell in December by 22 percent.

The U.S. Census Bureau 2007 economic census showed that a little more than 15 and one-half million people worked in the retail industry in the U.S. at the time. The economic census is completed every five years – due again in 2012.

Did retail workers produce more; work harder this year than last? The numbers aren’t in for Christmas sales for 2011, but the U.S. Census Bureau reported $27.2 billion in sales for the 2010 holiday season.

WHO’S HIRING

• The nation’s department stores saw a 44 percent jump in sales in December

• This year, Best Buy hired about 18,000 extra workers for the holiday season, down from last year (29,000).

China led the foreign market for artificial Christmas trees shipped to the U.S. - $79.7 million worth during the same period. • China also led the way for the largest number of stuffed toys and other popular gift items imported to the U.S. between January and September 2011. • Toys imported from China totaled $2.5 billion. Chinese-made roller skates added up to $24.6 million in imports; basketballs $38.9 million; ice skates $17.7 million; sports footwear $253.8 million.

In London in 2008, the Westminster Council ordered a major department store, Debenhams, located on Oxford Street, to stop playing Christmas music broadcast into the street as an accompaniment to its window display. Apparently, there were numerous complaints, calling the blasting of Christmas music “noise pollution.

I’M DREAMING OF A ‌ Have you ever asked a retail sales clerk if he or she gets tired of hearing Christmas music? Many of them will emphatically answer “yes.â€? It’s not that they hate holiday music, but they listen to it all day and all night long, from Halloween through New Year’s. day, they probably have people shopping for their holiday gifts, but once upon a time they understood first-hand the hustle and bustle of Christmastime in the retail sales industry. •

Imagine buying shoes from George Clooney. In his native state of Kentucky, Clooney sold men’s suits and shoes in department stores and also worked in the stockrooms before he became “People’s Magazine’s” man of the year. Another of Hollywood’s golden boys, Brad Pitt, worked indirectly in retail for the food industry. Pitt wore a chicken costume and danced around on a street corner in downtown Hollywood advertising a fast food place. Think Pitt when you see people dressed as Uncle Sam or a piece of pizza frantically waving at you from the curb. They could be a stone’s throw away from fame.

It seems appropriate that designer Ralph Lauren started his career as a sales clerk at Brooks Brothers.

And visualize Colin Powell as a baby furniture salesman in New York. He learned Yiddish from the store owners and customers.

IT’S NOT OVER YET There’s plenty of time to get in on the bargain prices and even stock up for next year’s holiday season. Here’s a look at the best discounts in January.

inter has arrived! For Coloradoans, it can seem that winter arrives in early November, rather than late December. However, the calendar date of winter season has just begun, which means it is a perfect time to reflect on how to best utilize the season, aside from skiing, snowboarding, and snowshoeing. Winter is a time in which it is important to reflect on one’s own life. In nature, some animals use winter as a time to be still. For humans, it is a time for us to deeply reflect on the past year and what is desired for the following year. It is not a time to begin new projects, but to reflect on what has been learned, healed, and understood in the past 12 months. If nothing has been healed or understood, it is a beneficial time to reflect on why a lack of healing has occurred.

Winter Storm is for those who desire to utilize the winter season to deeply heal issues that have been ongoing. This treatment furthers and deepens the healing process. The result is feeling more deeply in tune with oneself and a deeper connection to the healing process by the time spring arrives. Every season has its purpose, joys, and guidelines. Use winter to connect, reflect, and to complete issues and/or projects.

Use the winter season to deeply reflect on what needs to be examined, healed, and resolved. What relationships need to be resolved, including one’s own relationship with himself or herself? Use the winter season to be quiet and to ‘build power slowly’. In addition, a Tai Yi treatment titled Winter Storm is useful. Winter Storm can only be offered during the winter season as it works with the energy of winter.

one’s own diet and exercise routine, and to reflect on changes that need to be made that assist the body in being more functional and relaxed. That requires patience, which is also a useful concept to understand and implement. As my teacher has stated, “patience is not about waiting, but about building power slowly.” That power is one’s own personal power, never power outside of the self.

burn) or an abscess on the abdominal side of the diaphragm. However, most of the time, no cause is found. For temporary hiccups, gulping food and simultaneously swallowing air sometimes brings them on. So can carbonated beverages.

Individualized treatment for: Nasal Allergies Chronic Sinusitis Food Allergy Hives Eczema Asthma

Through the years readers have provided me with hundreds of home remedies for dealing with hiccups, and I welcome new additions. Swallowing a teaspoon of sugar irritates the throat, which sets in motion a reflex that can end hiccups. Breathing into a paper bag raises the blood carbon-dioxide level, which, in turn, raises blood acidity, and that triggers a release of calcium. Calcium can spark nerve signals to stop hiccups. Putting angostura bitters on the back of the tongue is another sometimes-successful trick.

SHOVELING SNOW IS HARD ON HEART DEAR DR. DONOHUE: My husband is 73. I am sure he’s going to die this winter. He insists on shoveling our snow, and we have lots of it. He says it’s good for him; it gives him exercise. This from a man whose other exercise consists of popping open a beer can. He comes in after he’s cleared the walk, puffing and exhausted. Please talk some sense into him. -- M.L. ANSWER: After every snowstorm, city emergency rooms fill with older men who have had a heart attack after cleaning their snow-covered walks. Snow shoveling is strenuous exercise. It burns 420 calories an hour. The heart rate of a shoveler rises to 170 beats a minute, and the systolic blood pressure (the first number of a reading) exceeds 200. Of course, the demand depends on the depth and weight of the snow. Older hearts cannot support such stress. In addition to the work of shoveling, cold weather adds more demands on the heart. Unless a man your husband’s age has had medical clearance for such exhausting exercise, he is tempting fate. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: A friend has a case of constant hiccups. Can you suggest any possible cures? -- P.W. ANSWER: Hiccups come from involuntary contractions of the diaphragm, the horizontal muscle sheet that lies between the chest and the abdomen. It is the principal breathing muscle. Sometimes persistent contractions can be traced to gallbladder problems, diseases of the pancreas, reflux of stomach acid into the esophagus (heart-

Hiccups that last longer than 48 hours aren’t likely to respond to home remedies. Medicines have to be turned to. Chlorpromazine, omeprazole, metoclopramide and baclofen are often successfully used. In cases that are resistant to medicine treatment and that are disrupting a person’s life, doctors can interrupt, in a number of ways, the transmission of nerve signals conducted to the diaphragm by the phrenic nerve.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I am 34 and have been jogging for 10 years. I do it year-round. I’ve noticed this winter that my knees feel stiff before I run. They don’t hurt during the run or after. Could this be a sign that I’m getting arthritis? -- B.C.

ANSWER: It’s not likely that at age 34 you’re coming down with arthritis. It’s more likely a weather thing. Cold weather thickens joint fluid. That makes joints stiff. Warming the fluid by exercise relieves the stiffness.

HELP THEM!

Even if one of these financial seminars is hosted by your local senior center or another trusted local organization, do your homework in advance. Call the center to ask who checked it out, and how. Go online and do a search for the company’s name. What are their true qualifications? Are they local? See if there are any complaints at the Better Business Bureau. And if you go to a free lunch seminar (don’t go, but if you do): Don’t fill out any forms that give your personal information. Even giving your telephone number could be a step toward being harassed. They’ll want to visit you at your home, where you’re more vulnerable and have all your financial information handy so they can determine how much you’re worth and decide how to fine tune their approach. NEW YEAR, NEW YOU!

M

any people invest time and energy in losing weight after the holidays. If you’re one of them, the most important thing to remember is to adopt healthy habits that last. Glenda Kinder, nutrition and health education specialist with University of Missouri Extension, suggests working on habits that result in both health benefits and weight loss. Weight-loss-only diets don’t work because they focus on avoiding forbidden foods, not on enjoying delicious, nutritious foods. When making diet changes, keep it simple. Focus on making different choices and examine the types of food you typically eat. Instead of highly processed foods made from white flour, look for ways to eat more whole-grain foods. It’s never been easier to find a tasty, whole-grain product in breads, cereals, crackers and other grain foods. One of the best ways to satisfy your appetite is to eat a lean, healthy protein at each meal. Healthy proteins like chicken or turkey breast, fish, lean red meat, whey protein and nonfat dairy can help you stay on your diet plan. For some meals, choose a vegetable protein like nuts, beans, tofu or edamame. In general, a protein serving should not be more than the size and thickness of the palm of your hand. Proteins take longer for your body to digest, so you feel full longer. A meal high in protein and plant foods can prevent cravings for up to four hours. Another practice for a healthy diet is to

eat two colors at every meal. This means eating two or more servings of plants -- the fresher and more colorful the better -morning, noon and night. Although juice is a healthy choice, it’s best to limit the amount consumed to no more than 3/4 cup a day. You’re better off eating the whole fruit -- it’s more satisfying and provides more fiber. There’s nothing like fresh produce for improving health and achieving weight loss. Vegetables are more important than fruits, so try to have at least one vegetable at each meal.

If you follow these simple guidelines and incorporate great recipes like my Chicken and Apples with Lemon Balsamic Sauce, you can control hunger, and you’ll give your body the disease-fighting nutrients it needs.

CHICKEN AND APPLES WITH LEMON BALSAMIC SAUCE Chicken breast meat is a healthy but rather bland source of protein. Pairing lean chicken with apples and spinach in this flavorful lemon balsamic sauce showcases each ingredient and provides you with a lean protein, fruit and a vegetable in one dish. 4 chicken breast halves with the skin but no bone (about 1 1/4 pounds) 1 1/2 tablespoons poultry seasoning 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper Cooking-oil spray 1/4 cup balsamic vinegar 2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice 1 teaspoon lemon zest 2 cloves garlic, minced 1 cup canned reduced-sodium chicken broth or chicken stock 1/2 teaspoon agave syrup 1 large Jonagold or Mutsu apple (8 ounces), cut in half, cored and sliced thinly 1 (16 ounce) bag triple-washed baby spinach 1 tablespoon whipped butter

dium heat, or until chicken is just cooked through. Transfer chicken to each of 4 plates and top each serving with some of the sauce. Serve with whole-wheat pasta, couscous or brown rice. Serves 4.

3. Turn the heat to high. Mix the remaining 1/2 tablespoon of poultry seasoning, vinegar, lemon juice and zest, garlic, broth and syrup in skillet until well-blended. Bring sauce to a boil.

(Additional information provided by www. missourifamilies.org)

1. Season chicken on both sides with 1 tablespoon poultry seasoning, salt and pepper.

4. Turn heat to low and add butter, stirring until it melts. Add apples and half the bag of spinach and stir. Simmer for 6 minutes and add remaining spinach. Simmer another 3 minutes, until the apples soften and the sauce reduces slightly.

2. Spray a large skillet with the cookingoil spray and heat on high until hot; reduce heat to medium-high and add the chicken

5. Add chicken, skin side up, to the pan, along with any juices from the chicken plate. Cook 12 to 14 minutes over me-

New DVD Releases for Week of January 2, 2012 PICKS OF THE WEEK

“The Guard” (R) -- In the small, stony grey part of Ireland, a murder becomes the single thread that could unravel a big wool sweater of crime. It’s the kind of oddball setup and sinister conspiracy that can be tackled only by a mismatched duo from contrasting worlds: a doughy, sardonic small-town Irish cop (Brendan Gleeson) and a straight-laced, authoritative FBI agent (Don Cheadle.) The two proven actors handle the loweredbrow comedy like a brain surgeon handles

a game of Operation. Gleeson’s quips and character-acting carry the comedy well and precipitate chemistry with Cheadle’s straight man. “The Guard” shows that the buddy-cop comedy is still good for a laugh, provided moviemakers are handy with the right setting, script and talented performers who can have fun with it. “Contagion” (PG-13) -- This fast-paced, broad-scoped and paranoia-inducing disaster flick follows a deadly plague and its effects on human life as we know it -- while ending a lot of it. Gweneth Paltrow picks up a new super-bug in Hong Kong, then spreads it all over the place on her way back home to her Matt Damon husband. A star-lined cast adds gravitas to the lives of the various folks feeling the impact of the epidemic, including Marion Cotillard, Laurence Fishburne, Kate Winslet and Jude Law. Directed by Steven Soderbergh, the story ably shifts focus from wide-angle to up close

and intimate. The film really shines with its examinations of the many points of contact we have with each other in everyday life. When shaking the wrong hand or eating the wrong bar nut could end your life, people try to adapt to a new, sterile way of life. “I Am” -- Director Shadyac made his millions directing Jim Carey in movies like “Ace Ventura” and “Bruce Almighty.” After an accident left him with a long, painful recovery to think about life, he decided to put together a small crew and talk to experts about what’s wrong with the world and how to fix it. Some segments are shallow and saccharine-sweet, but the majority are charmingly optimistic and at least a little thought-provoking.

DOG OF THE WEEK “I Don’t Know How She Does It” (PG-13) Sarah Jessica Parker reprises her favorite role as a grating, self-martyring career woman. Except in this movie, career women are bor-

12

derline sociopaths, and stay-at-home moms are piranhas waiting to gnaw away at mothers who work uptown. Parker plays Kate, a working mom who has it all in her glittering upper-middle-class life, which is just so gosh-darn hard. Poking fun at the quirky challenges of everyday life is a valid premise for a story, but this movie’s world is charmless and polished clean. Parker is downright annoying as everyone else looks straight into the camera and heaps praise on her for working so hard to send emails and throw elaborate parties.

Creating a Facebook Page for your Business, Part 2 cropped off if you upload it to be in the square profile photo format. Redesign your logo wording to fit in a square format or use just a graphic that is recognizable for your business. Such as McDonald's using only the golden arches.

If you are a Bookstore, adding detailed information like address, store hours, and comments about new books being released will be appropriate information to share. If you're a band or a film, adding songs and videos is key. If you sell a product, photos of your products with reviews and prices will make a big impact. Gather the types of information that you want to include and you can always add more later.

Then, the most important step in creating an interesting Facebook Fan Page is adding information. Click "Add information to this Page" under the profile picture and enter as much basic and detailed information you can think of. The fields available will depend on your Page type. The more details you can add about who you are, what you do, and when and where customers can buy your products, the more successful you will be.

Choosing the right name for your page is very important because this is how your fans will find you. If McDonald's named their page McD's in order to be cute, less people would find it. Make sure you use a name that your fans will recognize. The name of the Page should be the exact same as the name of the business, organization, product, band, or individual. Then pick the category that best fits what you'd like to promote on Facebook. Don't worry if you don't find a perfect fit, but pick the closest match since you won't be able to change your category. Then click "Create Page". Next, click "upload a picture" near the top and upload the graphic or photo that best represents you. This will be seen as a thumbnail in the News Feed when your friends interact with you. A logo, storefront, or group photo may work well. Make sure the image is still clear when reduced to thumbnail size. If your page is about a person, use a photo of them. If it is a business, use a recognizable logo. Now, if the logo is in a long horizontal format, it will end up very small or even

You can choose to use Facebook applications, such as Photos, Reviews, and Discussion Board. In addition, applications built by outside developers can be used as Page tabs. INTERNET FRAUD SOARS, ARE YOU PREPARED?

I

f 2012 has a theme, it might well be the Year of Increased Internet Fraud. The problems don’t occur as much with what we block out with our virus protection as they do with the parts we do let in: email we open and websites we visit. One source pegs the increase in “phishing” (getting your information) at 1,200 percent in just the past six months. It’s only going to get worse. During the recent holidays, right in the middle of online shopping season, customers received fake messages supposedly from a major online store. The email looked genuine: the content looked right, the subject line was one that many people would open -- but the sender’s address was forged, and it asked for personal information. That’s the key right there: When an email or a site wants your data, beware. The collection form might be a duplicate of the info-gathering method of the legitimate site and look very authentic. What do they want? They want your personal information any way they can get it. It might be a direct steal when you help by typing in your name and information. It might be that you’re tricked into downloading a keystroke logger program that will capture everything you type in. Here are some initial steps you can take to protect yourself: 1. Err on the side of caution. Be skeptical. Don’t click any links, even out of curiosity. (Even clicking might start a download of spyware.) Don’t provide any personal information that’s asked for. If in doubt, close the email, close your email client completely, delete your browsing history and close all your browser windows. Then navigate to that company’s website in your normal way by typing in the URL. Be sure your browser’s phishing filter is turned on.

MAKE 2012 TAXES EASIER

you need evidence such as receipts, canceled checks, bills, statements, invoices and credit card statements showing that you paid.

Y

ou haven’t even thought about 2011 taxes, and here we are giving you tax advice for 2012. Well, it might be helpful- recordkeeping is a common problem among taxpayers, especially those who own a small business, have rental properties and /or have job-related expenses. So a common question is Do I need receipts for my expenses? Perhaps, but there are some rules. First, you should keep adequate records such as a logbook, diary, journal, account book or statement to prove your expenses or have sufficient evidence that will support your tax return deductions. Pure IRS lingo to be sure. In other words, have some written proof. In addition for items over $75

The evidence must also be adequate. Documentary evidence (more IRS lingo) ordinarily will be considered adequate if it shows the amount, date, place and essential character of the expense. For example, a credit card statement showing an office supply purchase may be considered an adequate record (statement) since it details the when who and why- regardless of the amount spent, you can toss the actual receipt. Yet, please understand that keeping all receipts is still the best procedure for minimizing tax complications regardless of the $75 caveat. Invest in a good scanner and backup service such as Carbonite.

2. Better yet, pick up the phone. Call the company and tell them about the email you’ve received. (They’ll want to know.) Ask if the mail was legitimate and if something is wrong with your account. To learn more in general about online fraud, go online to Fraud Watch International [www.fraudwatchinternational. com]. Explore the tabs for Fraud Education and Consumer, but especially the Phishing Alerts. Click one event in the very long list, especially if you recognize the company, and explore how the fraud was accomplished. There are graphics and text to describe each step. David Uffington regrets that he cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into his column whenever possible. Write to him in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. There are some additional requirements for charitable contributions, business expenditures, etc. that we can discuss with you personally. In looking ahead, our advice is to use a separate credit card for expenses associated with your job (or rentals or small businesses). We understand that using separate credit cards might create some hassles, but ensuring that all your expenses are properly documented and more importantly deducted on your tax returns should outweigh the inconvenience. Specifically for those of you with rentals or small businesses, a separate checking account is also recommended. You do not need a business checking account- those can be unnecessarily expensive. However, preventing your personal and business money from comingling is prudent from a tax and liability perspective. Next week we’ll highlight some of the basic changes from last year with respects to your 2011 taxes. If you have additional questions or need assistance, please contact Tina Watson CPA at tinawatsoncpa@gmail.com or visit her website at: www.tinawatsoncpa.com.
