SNIPPETZ REMEMBERS THE DAY THE MUSIC DIED by Deborah Stumpf
“A long, long time ago I can still remember how that music used to make me smile. And, I knew if I had my chance that I could make those people dance, and maybe they’d be happy for awhile. But, February made me shiver with every paper I’d deliver. Bad news on the doorstep – I couldn’t take one more step. I can’t remember if I cried when I read about his widowed bride. Something touched me deep inside the day the music died.” —American Pie by Don McLean The Day the Music Died... Continued on Page 2

from the tarmac. Snow was blowing across the runway, but Peterson received clearance to take off. Two weather advisories had indicated an oncoming blizzard, but Peterson was never told about it.
Don McLean wrote those lyrics to “American Pie” as a tribute to the untimely deaths of three of America’s rock ‘n’ roll pioneers: Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and The Big Bopper (J.P. Richardson).
Their plane was in the sky for only a few minutes when it went down, plowing into a nearby cornfield at more than 170 mph. The plane flipped over, tossing the passengers into the air. Their bodies were found yards away from the wreckage. Because of the snowstorm, no one could reach them until morning – 10 hours after the crash.
On Feb. 3, 1959, in the early morning hours, a three-passenger plane went down near Clear Lake, Iowa, ending the short lives of Holly, age 22; Valens, age 17; and Richardson, age 28 – and pilot Roger Peterson.
Holly’s mother in Texas and his pregnant wife in Greenwich Village, NY, heard the news on radio and television. Holly’s wife miscarried the following day. Shortly after, the authorities adopted a policy that no victim’s name would be released before the families had been notified.
The night before the crash, the three rock ‘n’ roll stars had performed in Clear Lake for two sold-out shows. Earlier that night, Holly, tired of his tour bus breaking down, chartered an airplane to fly him to the next show in Minnesota, and invited his musician companions. Waylon Jennings, Holly’s bass player, had decided to fly with Holly but gave up his seat to The Big Bopper (“Chantilly Lace”) because the latter had a cold. Holly’s guitarist, Tommy Allsup, flipped a coin with Richie Valens (“La Bamba”) for the other seat. Valens won.
HOLLY Charles Hardin Holly was born in Lubbock, Texas, in 1938. His parents encouraged music lessons for Holly and his three siblings. At age 5, Holly and his brothers entered a talent show and won $5 singing “Down the River of Memories.”
Peterson was tired from working 17 hours that day, but he couldn’t resist the chance to mingle with Holly. They boarded the single-engine plane about 12:30 a.m. as their fans screamed and waved good-bye
The experience marked the beginning of a monumental – albeit short – ride in music. When Elvis Presley died, 25,000 people
gathered outside Graceland in the heat of the summer to mourn his death. When John Lennon died, a million people gathered in Central Park, NY, for a vigil. More than 31 million people watched Michael Jackson’s funeral on T.V. Holly’s death didn’t draw that kind of fanfare, but his influence on the rock ‘n’ roll era was unquestionable. Fresh out of high school, Holly opened for Elvis Presley in 1955, and his style influenced other music legends: the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Grateful Dead; Bob Dylan, Linda Ronstadt, Bruce Springsteen and Elvis Costello. Holly wrote his material and his songs ranged from country to rhythm and blues to rockabilly to rock ‘n’ roll. Holly died in 1959; never knowing the impact he would have on the next decade’s rock ‘n’ roll epoch.
THE MUSIC DIED WITH PLANE CRASHES Besides Holly, the Big Bopper and Valens, many musicians lost their lives over the

The Day the Music Died... Continued from Page 2 years in plane crashes. • On Aug. 25, 2001, rhythm and blues singer and actress Aaliyah – just 22 years old at the time – lost her life when her plane crashed during takeoff. The plane was leaving the Bahamas with nine passengers, and all nine died. An investigation of the crash showed the plane was too crowded and the pilot had traces of cocaine and alcohol in his body. • Aspen, Colo., resident John Denver, who wrote and sang many hit songs like “Country Roads” and “Rocky Mountain High,” crashed his own single-engine plane near Monterey, Calif., Oct. 12, 1997. The crash occurred because Denver had inadvertently pressed down on the plane’s right rudder pedal as he was reaching for the fuel selector switch behind him to switch fuel tanks. Denver was 53 when he died – his face and body had been so badly burned that authorities could only identify him by his fingerprints. • On Aug. 27, 1990, popular blues guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughan died in a helicopter crash in Wisconsin. The pilot had taken off into dense fog and had failed to reach a proper altitude before flying over higher terrain. The crash took the lives of all five people on board; Vaughan was just 35 years old. • On New Year’s Eve in 1985, child actor (“The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet”) and heartthrob singer Ricky Nelson died when a malfunctioning heater on a plane en route to a performance in Dallas spawned a fire. The plane crashed in DeKalb, Texas, and took the lives of Nelson, age 45, his fiancé and five members of his band. Two people survived the crash. Nelson’s hit tunes included “Garden Party” and “Hello Mary Lou.” • On March 19, 1982, 25-year-old Randy Rhoads, lead guitarist for Ozzy Osbourne, died when the pilot of a small plane carrying Rhoads and another person attempted to whiz over Osbourne’s tour bus. The bus clipped a wing on the plane and caused the plane to crash into a house, killing all three on board. • Members of the Lynyrd Skynyrd Band – lead singer Ronnie VanZant, guitarist Steve Gaines, vocalist Cassie Gaines – were killed when their plane crashed Oct. 20, 1977, in Mississippi. The band’s assistant road manager and the pilot and copilot died as well. The pilots thought they had more fuel than they did, and mechanical difficulties led them to operate one of the engines on auto, which burned fuel at a faster-than-normal rate. When the pilots discovered the problem, they headed for a closer airport. However, the plane stalled in mid-air and crashed into swampy woods.
• On Sept. 20, 1973, legendary rock singer Jim Croce, age 30 at the time, died when a chartered Beechcraft crashed at a Louisiana airport. The plane hit a tree when it failed to gain enough altitude on takeoff. Croce’s accompanist, his manager, comedian George Stevens and the pilot were also killed. Croce achieved fame with his song “Bad, Bad Leroy Brown.” At age 26, Otis Redding (“Sittin’ on the Dock of the Bay”) and four members of his band were killed Dec. 10, 1967, when their plane crashed in an icy lake near Madison, Wis. • Iconic singer Patsy Cline died when a plane carrying her and her manager and fellow musicians “Cowboy” Copas and “Hawkshaw” Hawkins flew into severe weather and crashed in Tennessee – just 90 miles from their destination. Everyone on board was killed that day – March 5, 1963. Cline was 30 years old.

THE “27” CLUB It’s not a club that would entice membership – it’s a conceptual club that exists because many famous musicians have died at the age of 27. The club concept started with the deaths of Janis Joplin (1970), Jim Morrison of the “Doors” (1971), Jimi Hendrix (1970) and Brian Jones (1969) – all age 27 when they died. With the exception of Morrison, the others died as a result of drugs and alcohol. Morrison’s official cause of death was heart failure, but they say most likely induced by an overdose of heroin.

At age 27, Kurt Cobain of “Nirvana” shot himself while under the influence of drugs in 1994, and 27-year-old Amy Winehouse died of alcohol poisoning in 2011. The “British Medical Journal” published a study in December concluding that the deaths of famed musicians at the age of 27 were all coincidental. Their lifestyles, however, coincided with their early demise. In the words of Jimi Hendrix: “I’m the one that has to die when it’s time for me to die, so let me live my life, the way I want to.” “Them good ole boys were drinking whiskey and rye … singing, This’ll be the day that I died.”

After a child is taught that he or she deserves punishment (rather than consequences), that child grows into an adult who continues that belief until the belief is healed. reetings there kind readers. On this week’s edition of, ‘Pinz’ random article/ad thing’ I present to you a completely unoriginal topic. If you read this section last week (and let’s assume you did), you’ll notice I’m pushing the newly built ‘Record Room’ for the second consecutive week. This is because 1) I lack creativity, and 2) this is some really awesome stuff happening this week.

It will be a night of unique performances that people of all ages can come to appreciate, best of all, it’s FREE! That’s right, great live music without the age old hassle of having to spend money. However, we do recommend you tip the artists, so that they can pursue their craft in the warmth of a home. So basically, I’m just reminding you to be at Pinz Bowling Center this Thursday, in the east room, for our “Grand Opening,” if you will. But why did I even bother writing this, you were planning to come all around weren’t you. Oh, you sly devil, why do I waste my time?

mon and hard to abolish. If it happens, longer treatment with vaginal antiyeast medicines coupled with a weekly dose of oral Diflucan for six months is a reasonable action. If that fails, referral to a center that has the capability to check Candida’s sensitivity to antiyeast medication can end the problem. Unproven but popular ways of attacking this infection include eating yogurt with live lactobacillus in it to repopulate the vagina’s normal bacterial population. Another unproven approach is to treat the male partner. It hasn’t been shown that such an approach works, but some experts resort to it. Vaginal infections are discussed at length in the booklet on that topic. To obtain a copy, write: Dr. Donohue -- No. 1203W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada. with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. YEAST INFECTIONS TEND TO RECUR DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I haven’t seen an article about vaginal yeast infections. The doctor gave me an oral antiyeast medicine for it and a cream to apply. In addition, he gave me something to stop the itching. It seemed worse after the treatment, so the doctor gave me five more days of the oral medicine. What would you suggest if it comes back again? Could it be something I am eating or taking? -- N.F. ANSWER: Candida is the name of the yeast responsible for vaginal infections. Itching is a prominent sign. The vaginal lining also often is irritated and painful. Intercourse can be uncomfortable. White patches adhere to the vaginal lining, and there may be a white discharge. Close to 75 percent of all women will experience at least one Candida infection during their life. It has nothing to do with what you eat or take. Somewhere between 20 percent and 50 percent of woman harbor this yeast in their vagina but don’t have any symptoms of it. If these women are put on an antibiotic for an unrelated infection, the vaginal bacteria that keep the population of Candida at small numbers die off. Without those good bacteria, the Candida yeasts reproduce at a rapid rate and lead to symptoms. You were put on a standard treatment for Candida. Those treatments are antiyeast medicines that come as ointments, creams or vaginal suppositories. There are many of them. The oral antiyeast fluconazole (Diflucan) is another approved treatment. Recurrence of this infection is com-

ANSWER: Hypothyroidism is a thyroid gland that’s putting out way too little thyroid hormone. All body processes slow. People become weak and are exhausted. They’re cold when others are pleasantly warm. They gain weight without overeating. Their skin dries. The face becomes puffy. The heart beats slowly. Worldwide, iodine deficiency is the main cause of a sluggish thyroid gland. It is not in North America. Here, the main cause is an attack on the gland by the immune system. The appropriate treatment is supplying the hormone in pill form. It usually is a lifelong treatment, but it’s not an onerous one. It’s taking only one pill a day. *** Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. hen it comes to leaving something for the next generations, there’s something even more valuable than albums with carefully identified photos -- and that is your family’s health history. The U.S. surgeon general has created the “My Family Health Portrait,” an online tool that helps organize the specifics of your family’s health. The potential benefits to the next generations are big. There are certain diseases that can run in the family, like diabetes, heart disease and cancer. The risk for high blood pressure can show up through the generations. Then it gets a bit tricky when you have to list your relatives. It’s set up like a family tree: You start with your mother and father, if possible, and what you know about their health. Ideally, you can gather information for a total of three generations.
• It was 20th-century American critic John Leonard who made the following sage observation: “To be capable of embarrassment is the beginning of moral consciousness. Honor grows from qualms.”
At the end you can save the file and update it later as you gather more information, or print out what you have and share it with your family.
• You’ve probably never heard of the Spanish village of Lijar, located in the south of that country. This village, though, was involved in a nearly 100-year war that lasted well into the 20th century. It seems that in 1883, Alfonso XII, the king of Spain, made a state visit to Paris and received a less-than-royal welcome. Led by mayor Don Miguel Garcia Saez, the citizens of Lijar, after hearing that their monarch had been insulted and possible accosted by mobs, declared war on France. Though there were no casualties -- not even any gunfire -the war lasted until 1981. That was when the town council ruled that it would end hostilities with France

Capsicum peppers, both sweet and hot, contain large amounts of vitamin C -- two and a half times more vitamin C than oranges, on average. Capsicum peppers also are a good source of vitamin A, potassium and contain some iron and protein. At the same time, they are very low in fat and calories -- just 22 calories in three and a half ounces.

New DVD Releases for Week of February 6, 2012 PICKS OF THE WEEK “Anonymous” (PG-13) -- This Roland Emmerich (director of “2012”) period drama offers a scandalous version of literary history -- that William Shakespeare was not the author of the plays and poems attributed to him. The movie weaves historical facts into its dramatic framework to make the case that the Earl of Oxford was the brilliant author and Shakespeare a dim-witted actor all too happy to take credit. Running almost completely
parallel to this intrigue is a whole wagon-load of melodramatic plot lines about royal succession, courtly love and tawdry affairs. Keep in mind that this is a drama, not a documentary, not even a docu-drama. It’s too easy to poke holes in the theories posited by the film, so it’s best to just enjoy this one as a fantastical period piece chock-full of Elizabethan trashy romance and big-budget visuals. “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, Part I” (PG-13) -- There’s not a whole lot to say about this here moving picture -- fans will see it, and everyone else will loathe it. Yup, this is the one where the vampire, Edward (Robert Pattinson), marries the teen girl, Bella (Kristen Stewart), presumably to break the curse that keeps the poor girl from expressing anything approximating human emotion. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work, and Stewart’s face stays emotively neutral throughout the film. There’s a PG-13 sex scene during the stonyfaced couple’s honeymoon. However, the re-
ally gross stuff comes afterward, when the half-vampire baby goes all “Alien” and starts killing the young mother from the inside. As easy as it is to dog this movie for its flaws, an open mind and sense of humor will get you through if you’re ever forced to watch it. “Fireflies in the Garden” (R) -- This dysfunctional family drama may have pulled in a nice cast, but achieves only moderate success in bringing the story to life. Willem Dafoe plays Charles, an overbearing father who leaves a few psychological bruises on his son, Michael (Ryan Reynolds as an adult.) Julia Roberts plays Lisa, Michael’s lovely mother who is there to pick up the pieces. The parents are killed in a car accident before the family can reconcile, leaving behind a tangled web of guilt and resentment. It’s hard to say just what’s missing, but this story is more mopey than thoughtful, more cliched than tender. “A Very Harold and Kumar Christmas” (R) -- The cannabis-loving duo reunites for another ill-fated adventure to rectify a mix-
12
up involving drugs and the perfect Christmas tree. Once again, the humor is raunchy, raucous and seemingly random. Some sequences are laugh-out-loud funny; the remainder are best left unmentioned in polite company. Thanks to the Christmas spirit, the irreverent saga gets some warmth, showing that the duo is not too lowbrow to love.

Good for you, because you’ll need a good dollop of both to tackle an exciting challenge on the way. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A family issue might interrupt a career-linked project. Try to give the matter the attention it needs, but be careful not to jeopardize your workplace situation. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Some self-doubt shows up this week, causing you to question your ability to handle a new challenge. But you know you can do it, and this is your chance to prove it. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A personal matter requires you to be as clear and forthcoming as possible in order to avoid misunderstandings. A career move is eased with the emergence of new facts. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a way of reaching people that makes them feel good about themselves. You would be an excellent motivational speaker. (c) 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

Cereals, on the other hand, went up only 6.2 percent. Is it any wonder people are feeding their kids cereal for dinner? Supply and demand is given as the reason: More of us are sticking to basics, which pushes up the demand, which pushes up the price. The things we’re not buying -steaks, for example -- didn’t see much of a price increase because there wasn’t much of a demand. The USDA predicts that food prices for 2012 will “only” go up 3 percent to 4 percent, which still is above the long-term average. How to survive until prices come down? Here are some ideas:

TAX TALK
As a general rule, food prices go up 2.9 percent each year. In 2011 the average increase was a whopping 4.5 percent, and where it got us in the wallet was in the staples. A pork chop costs 6.9 percent more than it did a year ago. A chicken leg costs 10.5 percent more. Eggs are up 10.2 percent. Cheese up 8.4 percent. Turkey up 10.5 percent. Milk up 9.8 percent. Even potatoes soared by 12 percent.

ave you seen the price of hamburger lately? During the past year, the price of beef has skyrocketed, with that made-at-home burger costing 10 percent more than it did a year ago. The Economic Research Service arm of the U.S. Department of Agriculture keeps track of forecasts, and it’s taken a close look at 2011. We know it costs more to feed our families, but just how bad is it?

IS THERE A WAY TO AVOID SELF-EMPLOYMENT TAX?

The S-Corp election of your LLC changes how the K-1 is handled on your personal tax return. A K-1 is a statement that each owner receives, and it is similar to a W-2 since it shows the income that each owner is responsible for from a taxation perspective.
es, to a point. If you own a business as a garden variety singlemember LLC, your business income will be reported on your personal tax return under Schedule C and subjected to self-employment tax (15.3%) and income tax. The same is true for a business that has not formed a corporation. However, if you own an LLC and have elected to be treated as an S-Corp for taxation, the business must file a corporate return but it is Form 1120S and not Form 1065. What’s the big deal?
A K-1 generated from Form 1065 will typically contain an amount in Box 14 which is the income subjected to selfemployment tax. As a side note, an LLC that owns rental properties will generally not have an amount in Box 14 since rental income is not subjected to selfemployment tax. A K-1 generated from Form 1120S (LLC or C-Corp, either with S-Corp election) flows onto the owner’s personal tax return on Schedule E. Schedule E is the
--Shop the ads. This is no time to be loyal. If another nearby store has a special, go there. Stock up within reason. --Use your customer cards to take advantage of discounts. --Invest in a big box “club” membership. Be aware that the food comes in large bulk sizes and be prepared to split the costs with a friend. Divide and freeze meal-size portions. If you don’t have a freezer, barter with a friend to share the bounty in exchange for freezer space. --Study nutrition. Learn how to combine cheaper protein sources, such as beans and rice. Get creative with pasta. Go online to www.eatingwell.com and put “cheap” in the search box. Try www.cheapcooking. com and other similar sites. form used for rental properties, royalties and other investment income including business income from an S-Corp or LLC. That’s the good news. Here’s the not-asgood newsAn LLC with the S-Corp election must prepare a corporate tax return (Form 1120S). And, it must perform payroll and pay each owner a reasonable salary. But, consider thisEven a $10,000 net profit could save about $1,400 in taxes with S-Corp election. Nice. What’s the catch? Performing payroll and filing a corporate tax return costs money- but with the example above, the savings should arguably exceed the costs.
