T

alk about a tough job, what about that as First Lady of the United States? These ladies are brought into public life by their husbands and have high expectations placed upon them. From the first First Ladies to our recent wives of presidents, these women run the social calendar and act as the official hostess of the White House and its events, not to mention raise children and provide support to their husbands. It’s practically a thankless job. According to Barbara Bush, ““The First Lady is going to be criticized no matter what she does. If she does too little. If she does too much. And I think you just have to be yourself and do the best you can. And so what? That’s the way it is.

First and foremost, the First Lady is the hostess of the White House, responsible for ceremonial and social events and is an official branch of the Executive Office of the President, although not elected to her position. At least she doesn’t have to do it alone as she is assigned a staff to assist her. The First Lady also accompanies the President or attends in place of him at social and ceremonial events outside of the White House and the country. She receives no pay for her work as the social coordinator nor for any other cause she may work for while her husband is in office. That’s dedication.

Many First Ladies didn’t particularly like the title First Lady and many didn’t much like being a First Lady. Whether they loved the job or not, First Ladies have made an impact – some small, some big – but all notable.

In 1877, Lucy Webb Hayes was referred by the same in a newspaper article about the inauguration of her husband, Rutherford B. Hayes. By the 1900s, the term was more widespread and shortened to First Lady. Eventually, other countries around the globe used the title as well.

• Martha Washington (1731-1802) saw her role in life as the keeper of the family and didn’t particularly care for political life. She still established traditions. One may have been the social gatherings she hosted every Friday evening for anyone who would like to come by the President’s home, enjoy refreshments and talk about what’s happening in the country. • Jane Pierce (1806-1863) suffered from depression during Franklin Pierce’s presidency due to the death of their son from a train accident. She actively discouraged her husband from his political ambitions. • Margaret “Peggy” Taylor (1788-1852) re-

In the days of the first presidents, there was no official title for First Ladies. Typically, the wife of the president had a preference for how she liked to be addressed. Martha Washington, the first First Lady, was referred to as Lady Washington. Some used Mrs. President or Mrs. Presidentress. Dolley Madison (1768-1849) may have been the first to be referred to as First Lady. There are stories circulating that when President Zachary Taylor delivered her eulogy he used this title. However, there is no known written record of that eulogy. In 1863, there was a diary entry of William

fused the job of White House hostess. Betty Taylor Bliss, Peggy and Zachary Taylor’s daughter, performed that role. Peggy, however, did know how to shoot a gun. • Dolley Madison was a bit flashier in everything she did, including her fashionable and elegant dress. Not all fluff, Dolley risked her life to save White House treasures from a fire during the War of 1812. • Although Eleanor Roosevelt (1731-1802) thought of herself as “just plain, ordinary Mrs. Roosevelt,” she played a tremendous role in assisting her husband, President Franklin D. Roosevelt who suffered from paralysis and was not able to travel easily. Eleanor did so in his place. She also hosted a radio show and wrote a weekly newspaper column. She is said to be one of the most influential First ladies of the country. • Jacqueline Kennedy (1929-1994) was shy about her role as First Lady but was a picture of elegance and a perfect hostess. When she and President John F. Kennedy moved into the White House, Jacqueline took up the cause of restoring the aging mansion. She eventually hosted a televised tour of the renovated digs, which won an Emmy. • Betty Ford (1918-2011), who did not particularly enjoy being front and center in the nation’s eye, was very outspoken about her views on women’s rights as well as publicizing her mastectomy, which brought

She was also an alcoholic and founded the Betty Ford Clinic for drug and alcohol rehabilitation after she left the White House. • When Ronald Reagan took office, Nancy Reagan (1921- ), a former actress, started office with a bad rap – that of being “Fancy Nancy” the party-goer. She became a rather powerful First Lady and was a close advisor, advocate and protector of her husband.

THEIR NOTABLE CAUSES Most First Ladies took up causes while their husbands served as president. Early on, Mary Todd Lincoln visited wounded soldiers during the Civil War, and Edith Roosevelt sewed in a needlework club that provided clothing for the needy. There was Abigail Adams who championed women’s rights, followed by Louisa Adams, Caroline Harrison, Eleanor Roosevelt, Pat Nixon and Betty Ford. Eleanor Roosevelt was also a vocal civil rights activist and helped draft the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. She led in the formation of

the United Nations and was the first chairwoman of its Human Rights Commission. Lucy Hayes was one of the leaders of the temperance movement; Lady Bird Johnson was an environmentalist; Ellen Wilson took up the cause for better urban housing; Rosalyn Carter established a council on mental health; Nancy Reagan started the “Just Say No” campaign to fight drug and alcohol addiction in children; both Barbara and Laura Bush worked on increasing literacy; Hillary Clinton was active in health care as well as women’s and children’s issues; and our current First Lady, Michelle Obama, is focusing on childhood obesity.

Continued from Page 3 Harriet Lane (1830-1903) served as the White House hostess for her uncle, the only bachelor president, James Buchanan. Sarah Polk (1803-1891) put her foot down to dancing and playing cards in the White House. She also held the position as James Polk’s secretary.

THE FIRSTS OF THE FIRST LADIES • Martha Washington was the first First Lady to appear on a U.S. postage stamp. • Abigail Adams (1744-1818) was the first to be a president’s wife and mother of a president. She was also the first to live in the White House. • Dolley Madison was the first to respond to a telegraph message sent by Samuel Morse. She was also the first to be given an honorary seat on the floor of Congress. • Anna Harrison (1775-1864) was the only woman who was the wife of a president and a grandmother of another president. William Henry Harrison died one month after he was inaugurated and Anna never lived in the White House. • Letitia Tyler (1790-1842) was the first president’s wife to die while her husband was president. Her and John Tyler’s daughter, Letty Tyler Semple and their daughterin-law Priscilla Cooper Tyler shared the job as hostess after their mother’s death. John Tyler later eloped with Julia Gardiner (1820-1889). Julia was the first First Lady to be photographed. • Abigail Fillmore (1798-1853) was the first who had a paying job before she married Millard Fillmore. She was a school teacher. • Mary Lincoln (1818-1882) was the first to hold séances in the White House (and maybe the last?).

LIFE ENERGY FLOW - TAI YI

SPIRIT WEAVER

W

e are in a time frame of great passivity. We allow laws to be passed that restrict our freedoms because the government tells us to fear ‘those people’ over there. Our school systems teach incorrect information and incorrect history to our children. We passively eat genetically modified foods that have not been adequately tested for safety. We allow our children and adolescents to be drugged for our convenience of not having to guide them in a way they can understand. We allow our bodies to be pumped full of vaccines that now contain human DNA and genetically modified human blood. We allow all of this without nary a word for the most part. This passivity keeps us in denial of why we are here, what our purpose is, and how to live that purpose. As a society, as a global society, we are influenced to believe certain pieces of information for the sake of convenience. If you are one who speaks out, you may be ridiculed. Most people do not want to be ridiculed, so they stay quiet and allow the status quo to con-

tinue. This separates ones from their heart, their heart knowingness. It keeps ones’ meridians weak, so it is easy to keep ones under the influence of control. When enough fear is created, most people jump at the chance of being saved, even if that savior is the government or the mainstream medical community. When a person decides to live his or her heart knowingness, after years of being in denial of it, it can seem difficult to get there. It can seem difficult to understand how to access that information of knowingness in order to make balanced choices. Tai Yi is about learning how to make balanced choices, thereby creating a balanced life. A balanced life is one in which one feels, lives, and expresses in total balance with his or her heart-with self-integrity. When a person has made a choice for change, the treatment Spirit Weaver can assist. Spirit weaver works with all aspects of the mind, body, and emotions. This treatment is for those who have been under much stress and feel separated from their heart knowingness. This person may be easily influenced and may now want to live purposefully. Spirit Weaver will strengthen the meridians and can assist the person in feeling stronger, more connected, more balanced, and ready to move forward in the healing process; that healing process is in finding purpose and life passion. But patients with MCI who already have stress didn’t get any worse after being told the diagnosis, and sometimes the stress levels went down for both the patients and their families. Families and patients want to know that the memory or behavior problems have a name, a diagnosis. Three-quarters of individuals in another study said it was important to know so they can explore all possible treatments and plan for the future.

TO TELL, OR NOT

I

f the diagnosis is Mild Cognitive Impairment or Alzheimer’s disease, would you want to be told? Does it matter whether it’s about you, or about a family member? Does that change your mind? Dozens of studies were brought together to explore all facets of Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer’s disease. One of the studies revealed that between 30 percent and 60 percent of doctors don’t disclose a diagnosis if it’s dementia for fear of causing additional stress in both the patient and the families.

Individualized treatment for: Nasal Allergies Chronic Sinusitis Food Allergy Hives Eczema Asthma

When it comes to Alzheimer’s, 93 percent of people want the diagnosis disclosed if it’s about them. The reasons were possible early treatment and the basic right to know, as well as planning for assistance and learning to cope. But only 76 percent of families felt that the diagnosis should be revealed to the patient -- which means there could be Alzheimer’s patients who won’t get told, if the families have their way.

outh appear to be engaging in more and more risky life choices throughout TriLakes and the Colorado Springs areas. Are young people becoming indifferent in our communities? Are they making precarious choices that can permanently damage their own lives and the lives of others? Is this generation struggling more than any other generation? These are all questions we have asked ourselves and each other. We should be careful not to fall into the trap of oversimplifying the characterization of a single generation. Our youth not only face difficulties typical for our older peers, but also a new class of problems; making growing up unique in the struggle to become successful adults. Teens have easily accessible illegal drugs, electronics, internet, pornography and an overabundance of information as compared to previous decades. Not that these issues can be fully blamed for what is happening to our society, but with these issues comes social apathy, accessibility and a fast paced boredom in an overstimulated and undermanaged environment. Youth are often oversaturated, uninspired and unmotivated. They seek something, anything, to fill the void. It goes to reason, that given the options, we would hope our children would make the right choices. In 2008, the last year that the U.S. Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) did their studies, juveniles made up more than 16% of the arrests for violent crime and 26% of all property crime arrests in the United States. The Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS), developed by the CDC to track risk behaviors in Grades 9 through 12, indicating that nationwide 20% students surveyed have taken weapons to school, 38.7% of students had been in a physical fight, and more than half (53.1%) have been sexually active. Additionally, 32% percent of students reported heavy drinking, 80.4% reported having had at least one drink in their lifetime, and 71% percent had tried cigarettes. Marijuana use was reported at 42.4% nationally, 7% reported that they had used some form of cocaine during their lifetime, and 24.1% considered attempting suicide. Equally alarming is the age at which many youth have begun engaging in these risk behaviors. Some children as early as age 9 experimented with chemical substances and sexual activity. These statistics go on and on.

surrounding our community. It is easy to blame the kids, parents, our educational system and the government. And although education starts at home, don’t we, as a community have an obligation to help solve these problems? There are many strong, wonderful people who work hard to identify solutions. Unfortunately, they are a minority. We should start by acknowledging what leads young people to apathy towards themselves and the community. We have to reason that we may be setting the example. When we look into a mirror, we should be the example that we want our youth to reflect. Becoming part of the answer, rather than the problem should be our first solution. Rather than turn away, we should embrace our community with service. When we see a struggling youth, reach out and inspire a change. You have the power to motivate a life in a new direction. One of the most effective methods for changing an individual’s direction is to volunteer your time and become a mentor. If you don’t have time, support organizations that do; give to a local at-risk youth organizations, such as FamilyNation or Big Brothers Big Sisters, who provide youth services directly to the community. There are always opportunities to volunteer at local residential homes or work with other non-profits to provide food and medical services, such as Tri-Lake Cares or our local churches. By taking a few minutes a week, we can change our community and the outlook of our youth.

hatch they are already in their element. The red-eyed tree frog, however, protects its eggs from aquatic predators by attaching its eggs to the underside of leaves that hang out over a body of water. Once the eggs hatch, the tadpoles fall into the water. • The next time you travel to the United Kingdom, if you visit the university towns of Cambridge or Oxford, you should keep off the grass. • It was English philosopher Francis Bacon who made the following sage observation: “The root of all superstition is that men observe when a thing hits, but not when it misses.” • I’m sure you’ve seen photos of those picturesque covered bridges. It seems that they would have provided a welcome haven for people driving buggies caught out in the rain. You may be surprised to learn, though, that the bridges weren’t designed with a roof for the comfort of travelers. Being made of wood in an era before protective sealants, the bridges themselves needed to be protected from the elements.

As one Colorado Springs social services caseworker summarized, “Circumstances and life choices can lead youth down the wrong path and all kids have the potential to be atrisk. It’s up to the community and families to lead them in the right direction. Everyone is a step away from a bad decision and although it is ultimately each person’s choice how and when they succeed, individuals and organizations such as FamilyNation can make a difference in the lives of these young people. There will always be stresses and challenges for our youth, but if they do not have caring adults who reach out to inspire them, then they are left to their own devices and perceptions to make their choices; sometimes devastating ones.”

New DVD Releases for Week of March 5, 2012 PICKS OF THE WEEK “Footloose” (PG-13) -- This remake of Kevin Bacon’s 1984 breakout film aims to update the story for a new generation of youngsters who just wanna dance. Newcomer Kenny Wormald takes the role of Ren, a Boston teen transplanted to rural Georgia. Upon his arrival, the scene in the small town is decidedly uncool -- the tragic deaths of a few partying teens has been parlayed into an across-theboard ban on rock and/or roll, and all the

Dennis Quaid carries the dramatic weight as the town’s preacher man and anti-fun crusader haunted by the death of his offspring. While this new iteration is no barnburner, those itching for a fix of bouncy music and youthful boogey will find some fun. “Immortals” (R) -- Vibrant in visuals and sagging in story, this myth-laced epic has all the narrative weight of a fireworks show. A menacing Mickey Rourke plays Hyperion, a brutal warlord out to get some godly bow that functions as a Homeric weapon of mass destruction. The gods of Olympus pick a mortal champion, Theseus (Henry Cavill), to stop the plot and keep the bloodthirsty Titans of old locked up. It’s even more convoluted onscreen. The real might of the film is in the over-the-

top visuals, as gold-skinned gods clash in an electric-blue sky to decide the fate of the earth below. While the mix of sets and CG may cause eyes to pop, it all seems a lot of sound and fury signifying a second-rate epic. “Game of Thrones” Season 1 (NR) -- HBO took a calculated risk and landed an unmitigated success with this crossover series about swords, sires, kings and treachery. Adapted from the fantasy series by George R.R. Martin, the show sweeps audiences into a new world that manages to marry “Lord of the Rings” with “The Sopranos.” It’s daring, it’s engaging, it’s fresh ... and it was very expensive to make. Sean Bean stars as Ned Stark, an honor-bound patriarch who is pulled into a twisted vortex of feudal political intrigue, orbited by a constellation of full-fledged characters and awe-inspiring settings. The premiere of season 2 can’t come fast enough, so jump into this series at your nearest opportunity.

DOG OF THE WEEK “Jack and Jill” (PG) -- Adam Sandler goes full-on “Meet the Klumps” in this unpalatable heap of blue humor. Besides a traumatizing, unfunny memory, this comedy canker leaves behind so many questions. What in the name of Billy Madison was Sandler thinking? How did Al Pacino get roped into this train wreck? What did we ever do to Hollywood to deserve this?

PAYROLL TABLE GOTCHAS

P

ayroll tables can be problematic in an insidious way throughout the year. There are two situations that you should be aware ofFirst, those of you that have large swings in compensation from check to check can find themselves unnecessarily giving money to the IRS throughout the year. For example, let’s say your check at the beginning of the month is typically small and your paid 24 times a year. If your gross compensation is $1,250 for this check, payroll tables will assume that you are paid $30,000 per year which puts you in the 15% tax bracket.

Now let’s say your mid-month paycheck is relatively large due to monthly bonuses, commissions, etc. being tacked onto your base salary, and it is $5,000 in gross compensation. The payroll tables make the assumption that you are paid $10,000 per month or $120,000 for the year putting you into the 28% tax bracket. Come tax time, you earned $75,000 for the year but you withheld $20,596 in taxes but you should have withheld only $16,150, a $4,400 difference. Again a $4,400 surprise can be nice in April, but if you want to even out the tax consequence between paychecks, you might have to get cozy with your payroll specialist and have him or her make exemption changes between pay periods. Having your bonuses or commissions paid separately (a third check per month)

PALMER LAKE AFTER DARK Palmer Lake Town Hall Feb 24, Mar 30 & Apr 27 8 pm - 11 pm Adult and teen inspired event of neon lights, music, dancing and food. This will be a blast! Proceeds from this event support FamilyNation non-profit services. You will not be bored at this event.

YOUTH EMPOWERMENT FESTIVAL 2012 Palmer Lake Town Hall April 28, 2012 4 pm - 11 pm This is a festival dedicated to youth empowerment. There will be music, dancing, exhibits, and Arts & Crafts Festival, the Mayor’s Dinner and a proclamation declaring April 28, Youth Empowerment Day. Also, the PALMER LAKE YOU GOT TALENT finals will be held and the Youth Empowerment Awards 2012 will be announced. This is an amazing event.

YOUTH EMPOWERMENT AWARDS 2012 Palmer Lake Town Hall - Mayor’s Dinner April 28, 2012 6-8 pm Do you know a youth or young adult in the Palmer Lake or Monument area that is exceptional in the community? If so, submit your nomination to our Youth Empowerment Award Nomination at familynation.net and tell us why we should recognize this individual for the “Youth Empowerment Award 2012,” during the Mayor’s dinner at the “Youth Empowerment Festival 2012” on April 28, 2012. We want to hear from you.

can also help. The other payroll table issue is the cousin to the easily forgotten marriage penalty and it deals with disparate incomes between the spouses. When payroll tables are used to determine the amount of tax withholdings, they cannot predict or envision the other spouse’s income. So, if spouse A is earning $25,000 while spouse B is earning $100,000, spouse A will not withhold enough taxes when the incomes are combined since the payroll tables assume that spouse B earns a similar amount- a shortfall of $3,350 might exist. Understanding your goals with your tax return, such as large refund, small refund, owe nothing, etc., is the first step in correctly selecting your exemptions and subsequently your withholdings. More information on payroll tables can be found at: www.tinawatsoncpa.com/blog. Next week we’ll check out Roth 401ks. Tina Watson is a Certified Public Accountant in Gleneagle.
