NOT SUCH HAPPY SMILEYS

• Randall Flagg, a Stephen King villain wears a smiley badge. • Smiley the Psychotic Button is a sidekick for Evil Ernie, a Chaos! Comics character. The smiley button has a sinister face with crossbones behind it. • Several other comic book series love to use the smiley in sinister ways – “Watchmen,” “Transmetropolitan,” “The Tick,” The Sandman,” and “Solus.” At least Batman is not on the list. • TV and movies were not to be outdone with their depiction of smileys. In the movie “Evolution” produced in 2001, the smiley (three-eyed) symbolizes aliens. • In the horror film “The Howling,” the werewolf leaves smiley face stickers behind with his victims.

INTERESTING SMILEYS • A Hawaiian spider, called the “Theridion grallator,” is also known as the Happyface Spider because it has a yellow body and sometimes appears to have a smiley face on it. • A mars crater has been photographed that holds a striking resemblance to a smiley face. • A smiley is a term to describe a piercing of the webbed area located in the mouth between the upper lip and the upper gums. The piercing can only be seen when the person is smiling, hence the name.

COMMUNICATING WITH A SMILEY Although many have used their own renditions of the smiley in communications since the 1970’s, it appears that the Internet has influenced yet another comeback of the little guy. Scott Fahlman, a computer science professor at Carnegie Mellon University, is given credit for the development of the symbols or emoticons of smileys and other images that denote feelings. Fahlman started this trend when online billboards became popular among his peers at the University. The prob-

HOW TO WIGGLE OUT OF THE MUD By Dr. Ron Ross

PREPARE FOR THE BOOM

A

1780 Lake Woodmoor Dr., Monument In the Woodmoor Center behind the Library

The Juilliard School New York, NY Piano Performance & Instruction BEGINNER to ADVANCED

We think the government should reward people who create jobs and sell products and services to people who want and need them, not punish them with burdensome taxes and silly regulations designed only to make government bigger and keep bureaucrats solidly employed through retirement.

ll of us normal people who live and work in the real world have been watching the big shot Wall Street guys and the Washington politicians as they try to solve the economic problems our nation (and some say the whole planet) is suffering from.

While all this is working itself out I have a plan – not for the government, and not for Wall Street – for me. A plan to take advantage of whatever happens. A plan to prosper despite the falling markets. A plan to make my millions before, as the doomsdayers are telling us, the whole word implodes.

They talk about billions of dollars and now trillions of dollars like it’s Monopoly money that has no real impact on us hard-working slugs down here in the businesses and offices and living rooms and gas pumps of Hometown, USA. Most of us (at least me) don’t really understand what is going on and wonder if anyone really does. All of us sincerely hope that someone somewhere will do something that won’t make our predicament down here any worse.

Here’s my plan: I’m going to prepare for the boom that inevitably follows the bust. It’s happened before, you know, and it will happen again – I’m certain. I’m expecting this resilient country with it’s millions of hard-working, positive thinking, highly focused, problem solving entrepreneurs to rebound and rebound with a huge expansion which will prosper first those who are prepared.

No matter what those robber barons of Wall Street and the disputing deceivers of D.C. finally do, you and I are pretty much stuck in our little part of the world. We have to live with whatever they do and then find a way to prosper despite their so-called help. Remember what Ronald Reagan said: “The nine most terrifying words in the English language are: ‘I’m from the government and I’m here to help.’”

Gina Forero, B.M., M.S.

Fact is, the folks working down here on Main Street or officing in the tall buildings of the big city don’t want any help from the government. We want the government to step aside and let us solve problems, create jobs, build businesses, provide services, and earn a decent living – or even better – to live out the American dream and prosper!

KIM’S KORNER by Kim Carson

DECORATING YOUR CHILD’S ROOM

D

ecorating kid rooms is so much easier when you follow a plan. Having a foundation of walls, window treatments and bedding that are NOT theme specific, really leaves you wide open for making quick changes. Some things to consider when getting started: Have a “prop closet”. Keep all the miscellaneous kid’s room decorating items in there, and when you want to freshen your child’s room, just remove one group of accessories from their room and replace with another! How easy is that? On the more expensive items such as bedding, choose solid, stripe, plaid or a simple all over design that will blend with theme items. If you’re doing a major overhaul of your kid’s room, or doing some actual remodeling, you may be considering doing some financing. Sometimes we just can’t pay cash for everything, and if you wait until you have the cash, the kids may be grown and gone! But keep in mind that some of the items, such as furniture can go with them, and any permanent remodeling can increase the value of your home. The trend in kid’s furniture seems to be wood tone furniture, or painted furniture with wood tone tops. This makes it great for mix and match furniture. You could pick up a stained wood dresser with painted accents, a painted bed and a nightstand with a wood tone top. Mix it up boys and girls! Mixing and matching wild colors and patterns is big too, and homemade is making a come back. According to the Color Association of the US, you’ll be seeing retro and classic hues from wild to mild in kids decorating. Which to me sounds like most anything goes! On a recent trip to a department store it was like I stepped back into the 60’s/70’s as I walked through the clothing department. Psychedelic wild patterns in far out colors, and knit and crocheted ponchos ( yes ponchos are back ) & scarves were everywhere. Everything old is new again. It’s the same, generation after generation. The point of this story is, if you’re gonna walk the walk, you gotta talk the talk. The colors and patterns in the wardrobe are what influence the kids rooms decor. So if you don’t know what to do in the kids’ room, look in their closets first!

• Give them space to show their individualism, test out different ideas and rolls. Kids learn by pretending, roll playing and practice.

Children have teddy bears to feel safer. Parents have Hunter Douglas.

• If you find all this totally appalling, close the door to their rooms, as this too shall pass. These are quick and inexpensive ways to add some punch to the room with fashion fabrics. Imagine using that neon pink, aqua or the lime green that you see everywhere, or one of the retro prints.

• Fashion fabric can be used for Home Decor too. How about some sequined fabric for curtains in your teen’s bedroom? Many of these fabric are sparkley, shiney and slinky. Just what the kids are looking for.

Offer valid September 25 – November 17, 2008. Ask for details and a FREE child safety

• Some other fabrics that would work are spandex, rayon, chiffon, holographic stretch velvet and crinkled taffeta to name a few. Just keep in mind that most fashion fabrics won’t be as wide, and you may need extra fabric.

• Spandex is particularly great for kids rooms. It’s shiny, stretchy and comes in bright colors and prints. It’s easy to stretch and wrap around almost anything. Use as a bed canopy, wrapped and swagged across a curtain pole, draped from hooks or swag holders.

Stretch a piece of it over the back of the desk chair and knot it in the back with a big knot or bow. Tie pieces of it around throw pillows in a bunch of different colors. Put a plant hook in the ceiling on each side of the head of the bed and drape spandex starting at the floor on one side, up to the first hook, knot, drape across to the second hook, knot, and hang down to the floor on the other side!

KID’S BEDROOM FURNITURE A basic furniture style can be chosen that will span the themes and the ages, unless you decide you want to do some painting techniques while decorating kid rooms. If you do, you’ll need to keep the long term goal in mind, or be prepared to repaint in a few years. And speaking of furniture you can find some great deals on furniture and decor for your Kids’ room online! So don’t be afraid to shop online because many places offer special shipping rates to get your order.

And in reality, the furniture prices plus the shipping charges aren’t bad when you figure how much time it would take you to hit all the furniture stores to make a choice, and then end up paying for delivery anyway. Who’d of thought we would be ordering furniture online for decorating kid’s rooms and having it delivered to our homes?

FROM START TO FITNESS By Andrea Renee Wyatt, M.S.S., C.S.C.S.

PERSONAL TRAINING WITH A FRIEND Q: My best friend recently started working with a personal trainer and has asked me to work out in a group with her and another friend. The personal training group would meet twice a week. I am a little worried that I am not as fit as the other two members of the group. Could everyone get an effective workout in a group setting even if we’re on different fitness levels? A: Group personal training is one of the biggest trends in the fitness industry today. The idea of receiving the expertise of a personal training but in a group setting has made this one of the most popular types of training at many fitness facilities. The benefits of group training are appealing to many who want to use a personal trainer and also enjoy the camaraderie of workout partners. Most group personal-training sessions begin with the assessment of individual participants to establish their personal fitness goals and to discuss your health and fitness history. Group personal training and group exercise classes differ in the approach to the group’s purpose and the individual programming. Your personal

trainer will be able to pace everyone in the group to work at their own fitness level by modifying exercises as necessary. There are several benefits to group personal training, including a reduced cost by working out with another participant, the support and encouragement you can receive and give with other participants, accountability from your workout buddies, a professional trainer monitoring your workouts and assessing your goals, and a fun but productive workout environment. Your personal trainer will be able to identify each individual’s needs and then program workouts for their benefit. Discuss your concerns with the trainer, and he or she will design a workout that will safely challenge each person without going beyond their fitness level. Remember the goal is for each participant to succeed.

Gleneagle Vision Center is the area’s newest Professional Eye Care Center, providing comprehensive eye exams, contact lens fittings, complete optical services, and management of eye disease.

Although group training has its advantages, it is not for everyone. A true novice to exercise may not feel comfortable in a group and may opt for true one-on-one personal training. Also, your personal trainer should only place participants together who can work well with one another and create a positive environment for everyone involved. Remember that while group personal training can be a great way to become fit, it is important to find the type of training that will work best for you and help you reach your fitness goals.

Well here are some great breakfast ideas that can help you continue with your weight loss progress, yet are alternatives to the usual breakfast items. Remember to refer to your

meal planner for appropriate portion sizes. You can create a Pita Pizza! Just stuff a whole-wheat pita with some tomatoes and low-fat mozzarella cheese. Heat it up in the microwave or toaster oven and enjoy! Or how does Rice Pudding sound? All you need is about 1/3 cup of leftover rice, 1 cup of nonfat vanilla yogurt with artificial sweetener, and a dash of cinnamon. Just mix and enjoy a cool, sweet breakfast. Forget about greasy hash browns! Just heat up a leftover baked potato and top it with nonfat melted cheese for a warm, filling breakfast meal. Breakfast is meant to refuel your body. There’s no rule that says you have to stick to standard items. Try these simple ideas and begin to create new ones to start off your day with a healthy meal that can help you with your weight loss efforts!

You’ve probably heard for years the familiar complaints about the effects of television. Well, the news is that these ill-effects have become more proven and more dire with every passing year. It’s now an established fact that TV watching leads to poor dietary habits, inactivity (and all the resulting health effects, even an increased risk of juvenile diabetes), and a host of behavior ills, including a greater likelihood of teenaged viewers starting to smoke.

Your kids will tell you they’re bored at first, but boredom passes quickly and usually turns into creativity. Soon you’ll find your family taking hikes, playing games, engaging in conversation, and many more truly healthy activities.

Consider the amount of time you and your family spend ingesting the output of our major media: television, radio and printed materials. And if you believe as many do that the media is the source of many psychological ills, try a radical concept that’s gaining popularity: go mediafree for thirty or forty days.

Yet, in our advertising-driven, sensationalistic, 24-hour-a-day news cycles, even the other forms of media can cause stress, anxiety, and a feeling of disconnection from our surroundings. Going “without” these time-wasting, attentionsucking diversions can actually add hours to your day and open up your life to the kinds of enrichments you always wanted to enjoy but “never had the time for.”

hen it comes to pets, Warren Eckstein loves yours as much as you do! He hosts a long-running nationally syndicated radio show, “The Pet Show With Warren Eckstein,” heard in more than 100 cities. His “hugs and kisses” approach to giving solid advice to pet owners is informative, entertaining and filled with compassion. He is the contributing pet and animal editor for NBC’s “Today” show, and is the author of 11 popular books, including “How to Get Your Cat to Do What You Want” and “How to Get Your Dog to Do What You Want.” He is a contributing expert to the book “The Experts Guide to 100 Things Everyone Should Know How to Do.” Look for him on TV shows and at personal appearances. To learn more about his show, books, products and charitable work, go to: www.warreneckstein. com and www.thepetshow.com. Name a few human food items that should never be fed to a pet under any circumstances. “Some of the more common food items to avoid giving pets are chocolate, onions, raisins, garlic, macadamia nuts, alcohol and coffee.” What’s the craziest food-related tale you ever heard from a listener or client? “It involved a very wealthy client who had two St. Bernards that would eat food only if it was served off a spoon! She hired a feeder.” What snacks do you enjoy on a long plane flight? And should pets that travel on planes in cages be given snacks? “I like strawberry licorice and trail mix.

f you work for an employer who offers a benefits package that includes life insurance and disability income insurance, consider yourself fortunate. But you can’t necessarily consider yourself fully protected. And if you don’t have appropriate life and disability insurance, your long-term financial goals could be at risk.

Life Insurance: How Much Is Enough? The amount of life insurance you’ll require will change throughout your life. When you’re starting out in your career, and you’re single and living in an apartment, you probably need a lot less insurance than you might a few years later, when you have a spouse, children and a mortgage. Because your life insurance needs will evolve over time, you can’t really use a “formula” to determine how much insurance you should own. The only way to determine your true needs is to take stock of your individual situation. How big is your mortgage? How much will it cost to send your kids to college? How much income is your spouse likely to bring in over time? By answering these and other key questions, you should be able to get a good sense of how much life insurance you’d need at any point in time. From there, it’s just a matter of seeing how much insurance your employer is offering and then purchasing enough coverage on your own to make up the shortfall, if one exists. And you’ll find other benefits to owning your own policy: It may be more cost effective, and you’ll keep the coverage even if you change jobs. If you purchase a term life policy, you’ll find it quite affordable to re-

ceive a substantial amount of coverage. Eventually, to help yourself meet goals beyond just protection, you might want to consider some type of permanent insurance, such as whole life or universal life, which contains an investment component in addition to the death benefit.

Disability Insurance: Go Long An illness or accident will keep one in five workers out of work for a least a year during their working careers, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. And Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) might not help, because, in any given year, most claims are denied. In fact, in 2007 only about 38 percent of the 2.2 million people who applied for SSDI benefits actually received them, according to the Social Security Administration. So, while you are healthy and working, ask some questions about your employer’s disability insurance plan. What does it cover and for how long? Many employers provide short-term disability plans because they are relatively inexpensive, but as we’ve seen, many disabilities last a year or longer. Find out if your employer offers any long-term disability coverage, which can provide benefits until you reach age 65. If so, think about purchasing as much as you can. If you can’t get enough coverage at work, consider a policy from an outside provider. Basically, you need enough of a monthly disability insurance benefit to replace your net take-home pay, so that your current lifestyle does not change. Disability insurance policies vary widely in coverage and premium, so shop around before purchasing one. Take full advantage of your employer’s life and disability insurance plans. But if this coverage isn’t enough, get what you need on your own. You’ll be making a smart investment. This article was written by Edward Jones on behalf of your Edward Jones financial advisor. DOLLARS AND SENSE BY David Uffington

START PLANNING NOW FOR STRESS-FREE HOLIDAYS

F

or too many, the holidays are a stressful time that results in one thing: an overload of spending debt that has to be paid after the new year. Debt-free holidays are possible, however, if you approach your spending with steely resolve -- and if you start early. Here are some steps to take: • Decide on your budget now -- what you can realistically afford to spend -- and don’t increase that amount, even if you discover later that you’ve left someone off the recipient list. • Make your gift list, putting a spending limit on each item, and vow to stick to it. • If you’ve had a Christmas club savings account that you’ve added to all year, you’re ahead of the game. Plan on cash-only spending, and leave the credit cards at home when you shop. • If you’ve never had the nerve to suggest it, this is

IT’S THE LAW! by Christopher C. Meyer, Attorney at Law, P.C.

THE MARRIAGE ZONE: HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO GET A DIVORCE? © Christopher C. Meyer, September, 2008

W

hen I speak to someone interested in getting a divorce or a legal separation, one of the first questions they ask is: how long will it take? It is human nature that, after making the difficult decision to get a divorce or a legal separation, people want the desired results to occur as soon as possible. The theoretical shortest amount of time it will take to get your divorce or legal separation is 91 days from the time your case is filed with the Court. The Colorado Legislature has passed a law that requires Judges to wait 90 days after the case is filed before they can issue your divorce decree or decree of legal separation. There are no exceptions to this rule. There is no way around this rule. I don’t know the exact reason for the 90-day waiting period. However, I can speculate that the Legislature felt it was wise to provide a waiting period to prevent people from making impulsive decisions regarding such serious arrangements as marriage. How long your case will take depends upon you and your spouse. If you and your spouse cooperate and agree as to all the financial and parenting aspects of the case, your case may only take 91 days until the decree is entered. The more assets and debt you have, and the more complicated your financial ar-

the year to try to come to an agreement with relatives that there will be no gift swapping among the adults. Chances are they’ll be relieved that you’ve brought it up. Opt for a family potluck get-together over the holidays instead of exchanging gifts. • Buy a few items out of every paycheck and check them off your list. • Start scouring the dollar stores, consignment shops, the sales racks at outlet stores and Salvation Army or Goodwill for bargains. Good bets for inexpensive gifts include picture frames to hold digital photos you print out, tins to hold home-baked cookies and treats, and DVDs and games. • Do your homework. Use the Internet to track sales, and comparison shop for kids’ toys and electronics. • Consider whether some of your gift recipients, especially older relatives, would rather have a gift of your time than another trinket. • If you plan to make gifts, get started so you’re not tempted to rush out and buy later. If you plan to make homemade goodies, decide on your recipes now. Expect to be tempted as the stores pull out all the stops to get you to buy. The closer you get to the holidays, the more likely you are to succumb to stress and overspend. Set your priorities, limit your spending, start now and plan for a debt-free holiday. David Uffington regrets that he cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into his column whenever possible. Write to him in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. rangements are, it is likely that your case will take longer to resolve. With a big asset case, assembling all the information, getting all the expert input, and deciding how to resolve the issues are likely to take longer than 90 days, even if you wind up agreeing on everything. Wrangling about parenting issues also can add significantly to the length of your case. It is important to remember that anything you and your spouse can’t agree on, a Judge will ultimately have to decide at a hearing. Judges are very busy, and getting time for a hearing will usually place you well past the 90-day waiting period. Absent unusual circumstances, your divorce or legal separation, however complicated it may turn out to be, should not take more than a year to complete. It is important to keep tax considerations in mind regarding any divorce proceeding. If you are divorced during a calendar year, even if it is on December 31st, you cannot file as married for that calendar year. Cases filed after October 1st cannot be finalized until after the star of the next calendar year due to the waiting period. You don’t have to wait to file until next year in order to still be able to file as married for this calendar year. If you want your case completed as soon as possible after the 90-day waiting period has expired, you need to be organized and willing to cooperate with your spouse. Good luck as you contemplate leaving the Marriage Zone, and remember that there is just no getting around the 90-day waiting period. GREENSCAPING! Saving Water with Xeriscape -- A philosophy of conservation of water through creative landscaping.

O

ur Home Environment goes beyond the Indoors. Our yards have become our outdoor homes – a place to relax and for our children to play. Strategically planting trees and shrubs to shade your home and keep your home naturally cooler in summer can save you money on energy costs per year-while also providing food and housing for birds, protecting against erosion, and cleaning the air as the plants soak up carbon dioxide. With simple GreenScaping principles, you can save time and money while protecting the environment and improving the health and appearance of your yard.

To maximize the benefits of deciduous trees, plant tall trees on the east and west-facing sides of your house. This will help shade your home during the hottest months of the summer. Planting trees on the south facing side of your home can help shade the roof, as the sun will not hit that side of the house much during the summer. Make sure to prune trees so that at least a few branches are shading the roof and the air conditioning unit. This adds up to additional energy savings.

3. Plant Evergreen Trees to Block Cold Winter Winds Evergreen trees are very useful if you want to create a natural windbreak to reduce those chilly winds that hit your home during the winter. It’s common to plant trees for windbreaks on the north and west sides of a home. However, you will need to determine the dominant wind direction for your area and plant up• Save Time by landscaping with wind. Incorporate Native Plants in Your Landscaping When planning your landscape, consider using a collection of native plants. Native plants are adapted to your area, which means they naturally require less maintenance and water than exotic plants. They are also more resistant to pests and diseases than many exotics, reducing the need for pesticides. Additionally, native plants attract native wildlife and beneficial insects. You don’t need to exclude exotic plants from your yard and garden, but incorporating natives in your design can make a big difference. 2. 5. Allow Native Plants and Groundcovers to Spread In Your Lawn Not all grasses and groundcover plants want to grow in the same soil. If you notice that moss or a particular groundcover plant wants to spread in your lawn, let it happen. Reduce the size of the lawn you have to mow by installing native perennial and shrub gardens. Choose plants and grasses that are suited to the levels of rainfall, temperature, and sunlight of the area.
