PREPARE FOR THE BOOM

4. MASTER YOUR MOUTH

T

here are three reasons you must master your mouth if you are to achieve significance.

First, you must master your mouth because your tongue – to a significant degree - determines what’s in your head. You use words to describe to yourself every experience of your life. Those descriptions determine your view of yourself, of others, and of your environment – either for good or ill. Every time you open your mouth you tattoo another message on your mind. What are you saying to yourself? Do you hear yourself saying things like “I’m stupid”, “I can’t learn how to do that”, or “Every time I try something I screw it up”? Or do you hear yourself saying things like “I love a challenge”, “I’m smart enough to learn something new”, or “I’m a person of great worth”? Here’s some good news and bad news all rolled into one sentence: You hear what you say and your mind accepts it as truth! What are you hearing yourself say? Make sure your vocabulary is positive and affirming. GIGO (Garbage In

– Garbage Out) does not only refer to your computer!

F

Next, you must master your mouth because it influences what others think of you. We are drawn to people who know what they are talking about. But we try to escape those who drone on and on when we know they don’t have a clue.

or the first time since 2000, we won’t see an annual increase in monthly premiums for Medicare Part B. The majority of us will continue to pay the $96.40 per month. Unless we have a lot of money, that is. For those who have more than an $85,000 modified adjusted gross annual income for a single person ($170,000 for a couple filing jointly), the monthly premium will go up roughly $135 to $308 per month depending on income.

Have you noticed that really successful people have powerful vocabularies and are able to speak in complete sentences? They can persuade others to their point of view, get folks to buy their products, explain how something works, or convey their ideas with clarity because they know the right words to use.

That’s not to say we’re getting a gift with this no increase in premium cost. We’ve paid higher premiums in recent years, so a contingency reserve could be built up. Not only that, but a whopping $9.3 billion (yes, billion, with a “b”) was given back to Medicare after

They also know what they are talking about. That means they are well-educated, probably because they are wellread and well-trained. If you want to be well spoken and thus well thought of, then you must be well informed. Third, master your mouth because it reveals what’s in your heart. Jesus taught, “It’s your heart, not the dictionary, that gives meaning to your words.” We’ve all heard someone talk and in only a moment or two we could tell whether they were honest or deceitful, authentic or phony. Their words might say one thing but their heart revealed something else.

it was accidentally spent (since 2005) for hospice care, a program that should have been paid for by another part of Medicare. Medicare Part B covers things like doctor visits, wheelchairs and other medical equipment, things that don’t involve being in a hospital. We pay a deductible of $135 for that, and it’s not going up. Medicare Part A (the part that pays for hospital stays, nursing homes and some home health-care services) will see an increase in the deductible of $44, bringing it up to $1,068 when we go into the hospital. Those of us who have the full 40 quarters of Medicare-covered work don’t pay a monthly premium. Those who don’t have at least 30 quarters however, however, will have an increase in the Part A premiums they already pay, up to $443 per month for next year. Those who have 30 to 39 quarters will pay $244 per month. Matilda Charles regrets that she cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into her column whenever possible. Maybe you like your grandmother’s kitchen or a friend’s library? What can you borrow from those rooms to forge your own perfect space? Finding a style that suits your lifestyle and setting doesn’t mean starting over so don’t panic.

Still, no matter if the tone is sophisticated or more relaxed, the emphasis is on comfort. A traditional living room decorated with furniture in classic shapes and styles -- despite how formal it may look -- is a party of one who is reading by the always an invitation to make your- fire. Today we will take a look at the Traditional Home Decorating style. In the strictest sense, traditional home decorating adheres to a certain period of history such as Georgian or neoclassical. In general terms, however, traditional style has come to translate a generous mix of highly polished pieces from any number of periods and countries (or good quality reproductions) and luxurious accouterments.

Contemporary accent pieces, fabrics and art can also figure in, but nothing is too glaringly new. A leancuisine traditional room would edit out the extras, keep the furnishings minimal, and let the architecture shine through.

To foster conversation, furniture is usually arranged with great symmetry in companionable groupings. Guests never have to hunt for a place to set down a drink or a magazine because every sofa and chair has a table at its disposal.

Similar furniture-like cabinetry and highly polished granite countertops can sweep the look through to the kitchen, too. OCTOBER SPECIAL:

FROM START TO FITNESS By Andrea Renee Wyatt, M.S.S., C.S.C.S.

BRING THE GYM HOME

C

reating a gym in your home may be easier than you think. No longer are large, expensive pieces of equipment the only option in bringing the gym home. With the purchase of a jump rope, resistance bands/ tubing, a medicine ball and stability ball, you can create a fully functional gym in your house. These items are inexpensive, take up minimal space and can be used to perform hundreds of exercises. The following are sample exercises using a jump rope, resistance band, medicine ball and stability ball: • Jump rope: Great for cardiovascular training. • Resistance band: Bicep curls (works front of arms). Hold handles and place bands under your feet. With your palms facing forward, bend your elbows bringing your palms toward your armpits. Lower, then repeat. • Medicine ball: Overhead tricep extension (works back of arms). With feet staggered and shoulder-width apart and ball grasped between hands, extend your arms directly overhead, close to your ears. Lower the ball by bending your arms directly behind your head until your arms are at a 90-degree angle. Extend your arms, and then repeat. • Stability ball: Wall squats (works legs

and glutes). Find a sturdy empty wall and place the ball against it. Place your middle to lower back against the ball. Walk your feet slightly forward, still keeping the ball behind you. Lower yourself slowly toward the ground no lower than 90 degrees. Press through your heels and straighten your legs to stand back up. Repeat. Complete one to three sets, 10-15 repetitions of each of these exercises. Remember to breathe and support your abdominals and back through each repetition. Be sure to talk with your physician or fitness professional about developing a fitness program that can be done at home. He or she can instruct you on what weight and size equipment can best aid you in reaching your fitness goals. The purchase of fitness equipment alone will not make you fit, so it is extremely important to receive proper instruction of how and when to use the equipment you have selected. Do not invest in any equipment until you have a plan to utilize it.

Fitness equipment can be found at most sporting-goods stores. Two companies that I recommend are Spriproducts, Inc. (1-800-222-7774, www.spriproducts. com) and Perform Better (1-888-5567464, www.performbetter.com). Both companies carry a large assortment of high-quality fitness equipment. Always consult a physician before beginning an exercise program. If you have a fitness or training question, write to Andrea in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. ran may be listed as a starch choice in your Diet Center program. One serving of bran is equivalent to 5 tablespoons. Raw bran can come from 4 basic sources: oat, corn, rice, and wheat. All kinds are excellent sources of fiber; which helps you feel full, helps with regularity, and can help prevent certain types of cancer. Corn bran provides the most fiber with about 20 grams per 5 tablespoons (the other types of bran provide 5 to 8 grams of fiber per 5 tablespoons)! Oat bran is also a nice source of energy boosting iron and thiamin. Oat bran also

provides a good amount of magnesium, which helps regulate blood pressure. In addition to iron, thiamin, and magnesium; rice bran is loaded with vitamin B6 and niacin, B vitamins necessary for energy production. But be aware, rice bran is also higher in fat, with about 6 grams per 5 tablespoon serving. Wheat bran is a good source of magnesium and iron also. Wheat bran provides the least amount of calories with about 38 calories per 5 tablespoons. Plain oat bran and wheat bran can be enjoyed as hot cereal. All types can be used as substitutes for bread or breadcrumbs used in recipes to thicken soup, or to coat meat or fish. Bran can also be used to top casseroles or added to bulk meatloaves. Try incorporating bran into some of your recipes to gain its nutritional benefits!

Part of the peripheral nervous system is called the autonomic nervous system. The actions of the autonomic nervous system are well, automatic. Breathing, your heartbeat and digestion are functions of this system.

The information in this article is provided solely for educational purposes and not as medical advice. Please consult a medical or health professional if you have questions about your health. No liability is accepted should you decide to selftreat or self-prescribe.

Address

The peripheral nervous system transports the messages between the central nervous system and the body. It consists of cranial and spinal nerves that carry messages to and from every sensory and motor nerve in your body.

Chiropractic care is designed to restore the integrity of your nervous system so that everything works the way it’s supposed to. That’s why it’s vital to have your spine checked regularly for optimum health and well-being.

Guest Name

The brain and spinal cord make up the central nervous system. The spinal cord transmits sensory messages to the brain and motor messages from the brain. Sensory nerves carry messages from receptors to the brain. If you touch a hot stove, pain receptors on certain types of nerve cells tell your brain to move your hand. Motor nerves send signals from the brain to the muscles in the body. These nerves help us to do things such as walk, kick a ball or pick up an object.

The autonomic nervous system is made up of the sympathetic system that alerts the body when there is an emergency or danger. When this happens, your heart beats faster, your blood pressure rises and your pupils dilate in what is called a “fight or flight” response. The parasympathetic system returns your body to normal once the danger has passed.

IS IT ACID OR TANNIN?

ed wines have acid as well as tannin, and distinguishing between the two as you taste a wine can be a real challenge. When you’re not sure whether it’s mainly tannin or acid you’re perceiving, pay attention to how your mouth feels after you swallow the wine. Both tannin and acid will make your mouth feel dry, but acid makes you salivate in response to the dry feeling. (Saliva is alkaline, so it neutralizes the acid.) Tannin just leaves your mouth dry.

he U.S. Congress has declared Oct. 19 - 25 as National Save for Retirement Week. Why are our lawmakers so concerned about Americans’ retirement savings? And are you doing everything you can to build sufficient resources to enjoy the retirement lifestyle you’ve envisioned? In regard to the first question, it appears that Congress does have good reason to be worried about our ability to save for retirement. It isn’t that we never think of it. In fact, 72 percent of workers say they and/or their spouses have saved for retirement, according to the 2008 Retirement Confidence Survey issued by the Employee Benefit Research Institute. Of course, that still means that 28 percent of workers aren’t saving for retirement. But these other statistics, taken from the same survey, are even more sobering: Forty-nine percent of workers report less than $25,000 in total savings and investments, excluding their home and defined benefit (pension) plans Just 47 percent of workers and/or their spouses have calculated how much money they will need for retirement. Clearly, as a nation, we need to do a better job of saving for retirement. As an individual, what can you do? Consider these suggestions: Calculate the amount of income you’ll need during retirement. The income you’ll need during retirement depends on your projected lifestyle. If, for example, you plan to retire early and travel continually, you’ll

likely need to save more than your neighbor, who wants to stay close to home and open a small business. So, map out your retirement and try to come up with a “price tag” for it. You may want to work with a professional financial advisor, who has the tools and experience to help you develop these calculations. Take full advantage of your retirement savings plans. Put in as much as you can afford to your 401(k) or other employer-sponsored retirement plan — and every time you get a raise, increase your contributions. Also, even if you have a 401(k), you’re probably still eligible to contribute to an IRA, another excellent tax-advantaged retirement savings vehicle. If you ever get to the point where you are “maxing out” on your both your 401(k) and IRA, you may want to look at other tax-advantaged investments, such as fixed annuities. Don’t shortchange your retirement to help pay for college. If you have children, you may want to help them pay for college, which has gotten increasingly expensive over the past several years. But if you decide to assist them by tapping into your retirement accounts — for example, by taking a loan against your 401(k) — you could seriously set back your progress toward your retirement savings goals. Instead of raiding your 401(k), consider establishing a tax-advantaged college savings account, such as a Section 529 plan or a Coverdell Education Savings Account. National Save for Retirement Week will come and go. But if you can use this event as a motivational tool to help yourself develop some solid retirement savings strategies, it will be a week worth remembering. DOLLARS AND SENSE BY David Uffington

IF BANK FAILS, FDIC PROTECTS YOUR MONEY

n a shaky economy, the last thing you want to worry about is the health of your bank and whether your money will be safe should the bank fail. You need not worry. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation was created by Congress in 1933 to cover accounts in the event of bank failure. In the FDIC’s 75-year history, no depositor has ever lost any money due to a bank failure. The FDIC covers deposit accounts up to the federal limits. For checking and savings accounts, certificates of deposit (CDs) and money-market deposit accounts, that limit is $100,000 per depositor per institution. A joint account is covered for $100,000 for each person. IRA deposits are covered up to $250,000. However, depositors can qualify for more coverage at one bank if their funds are in different “ownership” categories, such as trusts with named beneficiaries.

If a bank fails, the FDIC moves quickly to give depositors access to insured funds, generally on the next business day. If deposits exceed the FDIC limits (for example a single account with $120,000), it’s still possible to recover the uninsured money, depending how the FDIC handles the bank’s assets and how much it recovers. The assets might be sold and the depositor could receive an initial payment on uninsured money within a few days or weeks. In the event of a bank failure, the FDIC does one of two things. It transfers deposits to a new bank, or it creates a new “bridge bank” that will be operated by the FDIC until a buyer for the bank can be found. If your bank fails, you have two options. You can keep your money where it is and let the FDIC transfer your cash to a new bank. You’ll likely only have to change your checks and ATM card. Or you can withdraw your money and take it to a new bank. Logically, however, a bank that’s just been taken over is under the scrutiny of the FDIC and is probably even safer than another bank to which you might choose to transfer your funds. For specific questions on coverage for your accounts, call the FDIC toll-free 1-877-ASK-FDIC (1-877275-3342). stances involving, for example, one parent’s absence or severe mental illness. Parenting time is an area where parents often have trouble determining what is in the child’s best interests. A child ‘s best interests regarding parenting time is not merely a competition between parents to see who can win the most parenting time. It is becoming common for Courts to give equal parenting time to both parents, even with very young children. It is difficult to argue against a child’s spending as much time as possible with both parents.

If parents cannot agree on parenting time, a Court may appoint a parenting time evaluator who will investigate and report to the Court with a recommendation as to the child’s best interests. The evaluator must meet certain standards and is usually a mental health professional (psychologist).

In all cases involving children a “Parenting Plan” must be submitted to the Court. A Court will approve the Parenting Plan if it is in the ”best interests” of the child. The parenting plan must include provisions for parental decision-making and parenting time.

One of the best things you can do to show that you are serious about parenting time is to meet your child support obligation.

• On Oct. 21, 1797, the USS Constitution, a 44-gun U.S. Navy frigate, is launched in Boston Harbor. During the War of 1812, the Constitution won its enduring nickname “Old Ironsides” after defeating the British warship Guerriere off the coast of Nova Scotia. • On Oct. 24, 1901, 63-yearold schoolteacher Annie Edson Taylor, strapped for cash and seeking fame, becomes the first person to take the plunge over Niagara Falls in a barrel. Taylor’s brief fame cooled, and she was unable to make the fortune for which she had hoped. • On Oct. 20, 1930, the “Sherlock Holmes” program debuts on the radio starring William Gillette as Holmes. In 1939, Basil Rathbone took on the part, with Nigel Bruce as Watson. Rathbone and Bruce stayed with the radio show until 1946, during which time they also starred in some 16 Sherlock Holmes movies. • On Oct. 26, 1942, the last U.S. aircraft carrier manufac-

tured before America’s entry into World War II, the Hornet, is damaged so extensively by Japanese warplanes in the Battle of Santa Cruz that it must be abandoned. More than 25 of the 27 Japanese bombers that attacked the Hornet were also lost in the battle. • On Oct. 22, 1975, Air Force Sgt. Leonard Matlovich, a decorated veteran of the Vietnam War, is given a “general” discharge by the Air Force after publicly declaring his homosexuality. In 1979, after winning a much-publicized case against the Air Force, his discharge was upgraded to “honorable.” • On Oct. 23, 1983, a suicide bomber drives a truck packed with explosives into the U.S. Marine barracks in Beirut, Lebanon, killing 241 U.S. military personnel. • On Oct. 25, 1994, Susan Smith of South Carolina reports that she was carjacked by a man who took off with her two children in the backseat. EAGLE EYE

T

he last movie that teamed director D.J. Caruso and Shia LaBeouf was “Disturbia,” the stupid and shoddily made rip-off of Hitchcock’s “Rear Window.” A ripoff that stole so much from the source material that a lawsuit has been filed claiming the movie was an unauthorized remake. Their latest team-up is a high-tech, ridiculous rip-off of “The Man Who Knew Too Much.” This movie is so lame that I’m tempted to file a lawsuit myself, not only to get my money back, but to place a restraining order against Caruso and LaBeouf from ever making another movie again.

Here’s the plot: A supercomputer called ARI, developed by the government to combat terrorism, has the power to control every electronic device in the country: cell phones, traffic lights, LED billboards, trains, GPS systems on cars, you name it. ARI is so powerful it has become self-aware (like HAL in “2001”). A botched covert operation has convinced ARI that the president can no longer be trusted with issues of national security, so the computer sets into motion a series of preposterous events involving LaBeouf and co-star Michelle Monaghan that will lead ultimately to the murder of the president using an explosive crystal and a detonator hidden in the saxophone of Monaghan’s young son.

Salome’s Stars Week of October 20, 2008

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) A colleague might offer to open a door for you professionally. But before you walk through it, be sure this “favor” isn’t attached to an obligation you might find difficult to discharge. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Your creativity, your persistence and your reliability could lead to a major career shift. Be sure to use that other Taurean trait, your practicality, when discussing what the job offers. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A changing situation might require some adjustments you might not have been prepared to make. However, flexibility in this matter could be the best course to follow at this time.

Between the brain-dead script, choppy editing and horrible acting, the only way “Eagle Eye” could be worse is if Caruso had included Kate Hudson in the cast.

CANCER (June 21 to July 22) You’re in a period of fluctuating moods, which is not unusual for the Moon Child. Your emotions stabilize by the 26th. Meanwhile, try to hold off making major decisions until then.

Avoid this movie like the plague. Instead, go to the video store and rent the far superior “The Man Who Knew Too Much.”

LEO (July 23 to August 22) That keen sense of perception helps you hunt down those minute details that others overlook. And, of course, your Leonine ego will accept the expected praise with good grace.

GRADE: F

VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Be careful not to be confrontational when raising a work-related issue. Better to make a request than a demand. And, of course, be prepared to back up your case with facts.

LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Your ego might be hurt when a colleague turns down your offer to help. But accept it as a rejection of your offer, not of you. A friend from the past could re-emerge by week’s end. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A flow of positive energy turns a work project you didn’t want to do into something you actually love doing. Now, take that attitude into your social, intimate life -- and enjoy what follows. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Working hard to meet your professional goals is fine. But don’t neglect your private life, especially where it concerns your more cherished relationships. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) “Patience” remains the key word in dealing with an emotionally sensitive situation involving a close friend or family member. Help comes your way by week’s end. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) With new information coming in, it’s a good time to rethink some of your goals without taking suggestions from others, no matter how well-meaning they might be. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Making progress on your project is relatively easy in the early part of the week. A problem could arise midweek. But all goes swimmingly once it’s resolved. BORN THIS WEEK: Holding fast to your principles, no matter what, inspires others to follow your example. (c) 2008 King Features Synd., Inc.
