uperstitions have been around for centuries, first thought of as believing in magic or beliefs outside of Christianity. And in many cases, superstitions were part of religious practices. For instance, during the time of the plague in Europe, it became customary to say “God bless you” to anyone who sneezed in hopes that this would ward off spreading the plague. It was also common to cover the mouth with a handkerchief or a hand to stop the spread of the plague. However, some believed that covering the mouth would keep the soul intact, for if you sneezed into the air then your soul could escape and death would soon follow. Up until the time of the plague, the opposite held true in that sneezing into the air would expel evil.

Probably one of the most prominent superstitions is the number 13. Friday the 13th is unlucky and is rooted in both Scandinavian and Christian beliefs. Scandinavians thought that the 12 mythological demigods were joined by an evil 13th. And for Christians, the 13th guest at the Last Supper was the traitor Judas. In honor of the unlucky number 13, airplanes do not have a 13th aisle, more than 80 percent of high-rises do not have a 13th ﬂoor, hotel rooms and hospitals usually do not have a room number 13 and Italians do not have a number 13 in their lottery.

TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE One of the most recent types of superstition to occur is wishing on the time 11:11 or the date 11/11. Superstition has it that when a person looks at a clock that reads 11:11 and makes a wish, the wish will come true if you truly believe. Several theories on 11:11 have been conjured. Astrologers claim that times like 11:11 and 1:11 go hand in hand with epiphanies. Many people say they have experienced a revelation while looking at the clock at exactly 11:11, and do not even realize it. A couple spiritual theories have been based off of 11:11 as well. It is often believed that when you see the times of 11:11, 12:12, 12:34, 1:11 2:22, 3:33, 4:44, 5:55, or any repetition of numbers, an angel above has made you look at that time. Consequently, if you believe in angels, then you may make a wish and the wish will come true. Another spiritual theory says that looking at the clock and seeing 11:11 is an indication that you are in fact an “Earth Angel.” An Earth Angel is someone who has a mission to spread as much light as possible on Earth, almost a peacemaker. Have you decided whether you want to make changes to your Medicare Part D drug plan? We can begin making those changes on Nov. 15. Open enrollment for the drug plan will run through Dec. 31.

Four good things happen when you make a promise whether to yourself or to someone else.

If you’re already signed up with Medicare, you should have received your Annual Notice of Change. It will let you know about anything new that will take effect in January in your plan: a change in beneﬁts, cost and service area, plus any changes to the formulary. Take a close look at it so you can decide if you want to stay with the same plan or make changes.

MOST EVERYONE USES TOO MUCH SALT DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Sodium, sodium, sodium! Medical people continually tell us to cut down on it. How much is too much? Many packaged meals contain 10 percent to 40 percent. What does that percentage mean? What are the limits you suggest? -- S.W. ANSWER: Most people use too much sodium (salt, sodium chloride). The upper limit on sodium isn’t my suggestion. It comes from a panel of experts, and often different panels come up with different limits. One group sets the upper daily limit at 2,400 mg of sodium. Another would like people to use less, somewhere in the range of 1,200 mg to 1,500 mg. The 2,400 mg amount is equal to one teaspoon of salt. That doesn’t mean you’re allowed to ﬁll up a teaspoon with salt and use that whole teaspoon on food throughout the day. It indicates total sodium intake. People get 77 percent of their total daily sodium from processed and restaurant foods, things like commercial soups, frozen foods and luncheon meats. Another 12 percent comes from the sodium found naturally in foods. Six percent comes from salt sprinkled at the table, and 5 percent from salt added during cooking. You can cut 11 percent of your sodium intake by eliminating the last two sources. For salt added during the processing of foods, you have to read labels. The percentage of sodium listed on labels indicates the percent of the recommended daily sodium intake found in a serving of that food.

This illness affects 3 percent of those older than 40. It comes about from an acceleration of the normal daily breakdown and buildup of bones. The breakdown phase suddenly speeds up. That throws the buildup phase into high gear, and the new bone that results is misshapen and fragile. Quite often, the process occurs only in a limited section of one bone. When that’s the case, the illness doesn’t present a health threat. Paget’s disease of the skull can cause headaches, hearing disturbances or a malfunction of the nerves that come from the brain. The symptoms depend on what part of the skull is affected and the size of the affected area. Some have no symptoms.

5. Prepare What You Will Say: Practice saying the words out loud. Listen to how they sound. Be polite, not harsh. Don’t attack the other person with statements such as “You’re selfish” or “You’re such a cheap-skate.” These types of accusations are counterproductive and can lead to more conflict. 6. Be Clear About What You Want From the Person: If you would like your sister-in-law to contribute to the holiday dinner, be specific. “Joan, will you bring a vegetable dish on Sunday?” 7. Confront in Private: If others hear the conversation, it can be embarrassing to the other person. 8. Provide Enough Information: If you want your mother to limit the number of computer games she gives your son, tell her why. When you tell others the reason for your request, it may influence their behavior. 9. Listen to the Other Person’s Response: He or she may offer an alternative or provide an explanation for the behavior. Your sister may not be planning to fly home for the holidays because of financial difficulties she is too embarrassed to discuss. 10. And If You Don’t Get What You Want, Can You Live With the Behavior? Is it worth ending the relationship? Do the benefits of the relationship outweigh its drawbacks?

1. Mix gelatin and cold water together then add hot coffee. 2. Add sugar and salt and cool until slightly ﬁrm. 3. Whip cream and vanilla until stiff 4. Whip gelatin mixture until soft. 5. Fold in whip cream, pour into molds and chill.

hen I made this for the ﬁrst time I let the coffee mixture get too ﬁrm so it was lumpy in the whip cream which gave it some texture. The 2nd time I made this I didn’t let the coffee set hardly

at all and didn’t whip the whipping cream until stiff so it was more like a cappuccino jello thing. When I made the coffee for this I made it very, very strong the day before so it was chilled. Because of that, I added the gelatin to the coffee and then heated it in the microwave just enough to dissolve the gelatin and sugar. I left out the cold water. To garnish this you could top it with a little shaved chocolate and/or some cinnamon, some chopped nuts, or some fresh berries. You could also add in your favorite ﬂavored coffee syrup or liquor to the coffee before chilling it. I chilled these in little soufﬂé cups but you could use any type of mold and turn it out on to a nice plate. I also have some little individual molds that I got handed down from one of my great grandmothers that would have worked well too. You could also just make it in a bowl and serve from that too if you wanted to be very casual.

In California and around the world, its popularity has soared along with its acreage, and it seems wine lovers can’t drink enough of it. It dominates Bordeaux (its home), except for the Médoc and Graves. The aromas and ﬂavors can be plumy or sometimes chocolatey. For many people Merlot is much easier to like than Cabernet Sauvignon because it’s less tannic. Some winemakers, however, feel that Merlot isn’t satisfactory in its own right, and thus often blend it with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, or both. Very versatile with almost all foods.

RED CABBAGE FLAVORS FALL FEAST

ertain foods remind me of fall. A tray of beautiful red cabbages with a hint of purple and blue on their ruffled leaves resembles a bouquet of flowers. Raw red cabbage is a flavorful addition to salads, or it can be slow-cooked to sweet perfection as a side dish. One of my favorite recipes for red cabbage is in award-winning cooking instructor Rick Rodgers’s newest cookbook, “Autumn Gatherings: Casual Food to Enjoy With Family and Friends” (Morrow Cookbooks). From cabbage, squash and root vegetables to cranberries, apples and hearty, savory dishes, Rodgers shares uncomplicated recipes that are perfect for a cozy, comforting meal or a holiday feast. This week’s recipe, which features red cabbage, sausages and apples, is a classic example of German cooking and celebrates the bounty of the season. Rodger says that he “learned early in my cooking life not to try and rush the cabbage, as it needs plenty of time to soften into the melting mass of sweet and sour ingredients that makes it so unique, and becomes the perfect place to cook your favorite sausages.” The apples and apple juice enhances the sweetness of the cabbage, and the vinegar preserves the color of the cabbage. The flavors of the dish intensify the next day, so if possible, prepare the cabbage ahead of time. Nestle the sausages in the pot, let them cook while the cabbage is re-heating, and enjoy the flavors of fall! OKTOBERFEST SAUSAGES WITH RED CABBAGE 3 tablespoons vegetable oil, divided 6 slices thick-sliced bacon, coarsely chopped

1 large onion, thinly sliced 2 Golden Delicious apples, peeled, cored and cut into 1/4-inch thick wedges 1 (2 1/2-pound) head red cabbage, cut into wedges, core removed and thinly sliced 1 1/2 cups apple juice 1/3 cup cider vinegar 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme 1 bay leaf Salt and freshly ground black pepper 12 assorted sausages, such as bratwurst, Weisswurst, hot links and knockwurst, pricked with a fork 1. To make the red cabbage and apples, heat 1 tablespoon of the oil in a very large Dutch oven or ﬂameproof casserole over medium heat. Add the bacon and cook, stirring occasionally, until crisp and browned, about 8 minutes. Using a slotted spoon, transfer to paper towels to drain, leaving the fat in the pan. 2. Add the onion and cook, stirring often, until golden, about 10 minutes. Transfer to a bowl. Add the remaining 2 tablespoons of oil in the Dutch oven and heat until hot but not smoking. Add the apples and cook, stirring often, until lightly browned, about 3 minutes. Add the cabbage, apple juice, vinegar, brown sugar, thyme and bay leaf, and stir well to coat the cabbage with the liquid. (The vinegar helps the cabbage hold its color.) Bring to a boil over high heat. Reduce heat to medium-low and cover. Simmer, stirring occasionally, until the cabbage is tender, about 1 1/2 hours. Season with salt and pepper to taste. 3. Bury the sausages in the cabbage and cover. Cook until they are heated through, about 12 minutes. Using a slotted spoon, transfer the cabbage and sausages to a large serving bowl, removing the bay leaf, and tent with aluminum foil. Bring the cooking liquid in the pot to a boil over high heat and cook, stirring often, until reduced to about 1/2 cup, about 5 minutes. Pour over the cabbage and sausages and serve hot. he holidays are joyous times that bring special cards, gifts decorated with ribbons, tinsel or yarn, and wonderful decorations such as Christmas trees and poinsettias. Unfortunately, animals appreciate these items too; and many of them can cause serious damage. Here is a list of things to be aware of during the holiday season.

CHRISTMAS TREES • Anchor trees securely. Climbing pets with wagging tails can knock over your tree. • Hang breakable ornaments well out of reach. The small glass and metal fastenings can be stepped on or swallowed by your pet. • Keep tinsel, ribbons and garland out of pets’ reach, especially cats that are intrigued by them. These can become lodged in their intestines, cause obstructions and lead to surgery or death. • Clean up pine needles frequently. They can be toxic when eaten by your pet. • Prevent your pet from drinking water in the tree stand if you have added preservative chemicals. These can be poisonous to pets. Also, stagnant water can contain bacteria, which may lead to vomiting and diarrhea if ingested.

HOLIDAY HOUSE PLANTS Although they add a warm touch, many plants can harm your pets. • Lilies can be deadly to cats, with

some types causing kidney failure. • Poinsettias, although not as toxic as people think, can upset your pet’s digestive system. • Mistletoe, especially the berries, is highly toxic, can cause stomach upset or even potentially fatal heart problems. • Holly can cause vomiting, diarrhea, nausea and lethargy. • Certain types of ivy, such as English ivy, can cause severe harm. • Amaryllis can cause vomiting and diarrhea. • Hibiscus can cause diarrhea.

LIGHTS, CANDLES AND FRAGRANCE • Keep lights and extension cords safely secured/covered to deter chewing, which can lead to electric shock or electrocution. Better yet, invest in petproof extension cords, or spray with products such as Bitter Apple or Chew Stop. • Fragrant candles can entice pets, creating a ﬁre hazard if knocked over by an exuberant pet; and the fumes can be harmful to birds. • Exposure to liquid potpourri, popular during the holidays, can be very dangerous, potentially causing skin or damage, illness or death to your pet. So, enjoy all the wonderful things that make the holidays special, just remember to keep your pets in mind and take precautionary measures when adding all the festive touches to your home.

But changes in tax laws resulted in a 15 percent tax rate on dividends for most people. This rate was set to expire in 2008, but it has been extended until the end of 2010. At that point, dividends will again be taxed at your individual tax rate, which currently could be as high as 35%. Of course, things can change. As an alternative to taxing dividends at an individual’s income tax rate, lawmakers could decide to impose a higher fixed rate than the current 15 percent. At this point — and maybe at any point — no one can predict these things. Nonetheless, as you prepare your investment strategy, you may want to factor in the possibility that, in the near future, dividends will be taxed at a higher rate than they are now. If this happens, should you still consider adding dividend-paying stocks to your portfolio? FDIC SAFEGUARDS MORE OF YOUR SAVINGS

he Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation recently increased insurance coverage on bank accounts to $250,000. Until the increase, accounts were covered up to $100,000, except for retirement savings, which have been covered to $250,000 since 2006. The increase, however, is temporary. The new increased coverage will run through Dec. 31, 2009, at which time the coverage will be reduced to the previous $100,000 amount. The new insurance coverage is as follows: • Single owner account: $250,000 • Joint account $250,000: per co-owner • Trust Accounts $250,000: per owner per beneﬁciary These amounts apply to the total amount that is deposited in a bank. For example, if you have both checking and sav-

ings at one bank, those amounts would be added together subject to the $250,000 cap. If you’re concerned about the safety of your present bank, consider spreading your money between multiple banks and account types, or investigate credit unions as an option to traditional banks. Credit unions aren’t in business for profits, and most of them have been less likely to make the risky sub-prime housing loans that have been the downfall of banks across the country. Shareholders are the members, and having a credit-union account is a good way to get started in the credit world should you need a loan. To keep credit unions on equal footing with banks, they have been included in the increased insurance coverage legislation. Credit unions aren’t covered by the FDIC. Instead they are chartered by the National Credit Union Administration and covered by the National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund. No money has ever been lost in a credit-union failure because of the insurance. Keep an eye on the FDIC Web site [www.fdic.gov] for press releases and the Consumers and Communities section for up-to-date information. Click on Industry Analysis and Bank Data and Statistics to check on a specific bank. You’ll also be able to research comparisons between banks and individual bank ratings reports.
