uperstitions have been around for centuries, first thought of as believing in magic or beliefs outside of Christianity. And in many cases, superstitions were part of religious practices. For instance, during the time of the plague in Europe, it became customary to say “God bless you” to anyone who sneezed in hopes that this would ward off spreading the plague. It was also common to cover the mouth with a handkerchief or a hand to stop the spread of the plague. However, some believed that covering the mouth would keep the soul intact, for if you sneezed into the air then your soul could escape and death would soon follow. Up until the time of the plague, the opposite held true in that sneezing into the air would expel evil.

Do you throw salt over your left shoulder? It is believed that spilling salt is unlucky and causes arguments during the day. This may come from the belief that Judas spilled salt during the Last Supper. Tossing salt over your shoulder is thought to be like throwing salt into the eye of evil spirits who are waiting for an opportunity to strike. There are many superstitions involving both good luck and bad luck.

Probably one of the most prominent superstitions is the number 13. Friday the 13th is unlucky and is rooted in both Scandinavian and Christian beliefs. Scandinavians thought that the 12 mythological demigods were joined by an evil 13th. And for Christians, the 13th guest at the Last Supper was the traitor Judas. In honor of the unlucky number 13, airplanes do not have a 13th aisle, more than 80 percent of high-rises do not have a 13th floor, hotel rooms and hospitals usually do not have a room number 13 and Italians do not have a number 13 in their lottery.

TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE One of the most recent types of superstition to occur is wishing on the time 11:11 or the date 11/11. Superstition has it that when a person looks at a clock that reads 11:11 and makes a wish, the wish will come true if you truly believe. Several theories on 11:11 have been conjured. Astrologers claim that times like 11:11 and 1:11 go hand in hand with epiphanies. Many people say they have experienced a revelation while looking at the clock at exactly 11:11, and do not even realize it. A couple spiritual theories have been based off of 11:11 as well. It is often believed that when you see the times of 11:11, 12:12, 12:34, 1:11 2:22, 3:33, 4:44, 5:55, or any repetition of numbers, an angel above has made you look at that time. Consequently, if you believe in angels, then you may make a wish and the wish will come true. Another spiritual theory says that looking at the clock and seeing 11:11 is an indication that you are in fact an “Earth Angel.” An Earth Angel is someone who has a mission to spread as much light as possible on Earth, almost a peacemaker. Parallel to the Angel theory, it is believed that the Angels are telling you that you are an Earth Angel when you see 11:11.

hat phrase truly relates to my business passion “Chocolates by Kathleen”. As a former certified nutritionist, I know the emotional, physical, mental and, yes, even spiritual benefits of chocolate. Just thinking of the word “chocolate” immediately puts a smile on your face and heart. So, by taking my knowledge and experience of nutrition and chocolate, I blended the two to form “Chocolates by Kathleen”. Let’s step back to where I received my training. It came from the best person ever – my Mom, Choclatier Extraordinaire. I learned and participated in the making of handmade Easter eggs, Valentine’s Day hearts, Thanksgiving treats, Christmas minted chocolate poinsettias, personalized chocolate gifts and special orders to meet the growing requests by her happy clients. Every detail was attended to; no step in the process gone astray.

HOW TO WIGGLE OUT OF THE MUD

By Dr. Ron Ross

PREPARE FOR THE BOOM

Have you decided whether you want to make changes to your Medicare Part D drug plan? We can begin making those changes on Nov. 15. Open enrollment for the drug plan will run through Dec. 31.

Four good things happen when you make a promise whether to yourself or to someone else.

If you’re already signed up with Medicare, you should have received your Annual Notice of Change. It will let you know about anything new that will take effect in January in your plan: a change in benefits, cost and service area, plus any changes to the formulary. Take a close look at it so you can decide if you want to stay with the same plan or make changes.

First of all, you create an island of security in a sea of insecurity. When you make a promise you stretch yourself into a future circumstance that is well beyond your control with a declaration that you will control at least one thing – you will be there and you will keep your promise. Throughout our over 45 years of marriage my wife and I have been rich and poor, sick and healthy, and seen good times and bad.

If you’re going to change plans or are signing up for the first time, try to do it before Dec. 1. That will help to ensure that all goes well at the start of the year when your plan is to begin.

meeting I got up from the table, told them I would not do what they asked, and walked away from them forever. Because I kept my promise to myself to act honestly and with integrity I affirmed my own personal freedom. It was liberating!

Through it all we have had the privilege of knowing that no matter what the struggle or triumph that we would be at each other’s side. Our mutual faithfulness continues to provide us the island of security we need to survive the storms of life.

7. KEEP YOUR COMMITMENTS

A

s you live your life you make many and various promises. The most significant promises you make are to your mate to love, honor and cherish her/ him “’til death do us part.” Then, you promise your kids to take them fishing. You promise your mate to do something specific. You promise your bank to make payments on a loan. You promise a client to deliver his Widgets by Wednesday. You enter into contracts (legal and binding promises) to further your business interests. You promise yourself to deal honestly and ethically with everyone you deal with.

719-337-7742

Remember the Florida study that determined that the Medicare Web site isn’t easy to use? Unwieldy as the site is, I managed to find a certain drug and identify 72 plans in my state that have the drug in their formulary. So far, so good, but I was told there is a way to compare costs at a pharmacy versus having the drug sent by mail, and I couldn’t find it. I’ve decided there’s too much at stake here, so I’m going to use SHIPs -- State Health Insurance Assistance Programs -- for help in deciding about a new drug plan. To find one in your area, go to the Medicare site and put “SHIP contact” in the search box. Or call Medicare at 1-800-633-4227. If you want to try it yourself online, go to the Medicare plan finder at www.medicare.gov/MPDPF. Every time her neighbor would hang her wash to dry, the young woman would make the same comments. About one month later, the woman was surprised to see a nice clean wash on the line and said to her husband: “Look, she has learned how to wash correctly. I wonder who taught her this?” The husband replied, “I got up early this morning and cleaned our windows.” And so it is with life. SNIPPETZ® HEALTH AND WELLNESS

MOST EVERYONE USES TOO MUCH SALT DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Sodium, sodium, sodium! Medical people continually tell us to cut down on it. How much is too much? Many packaged meals contain 10 percent to 40 percent. What does that percentage mean? What are the limits you suggest? -- S.W. ANSWER: Most people use too much sodium (salt, sodium chloride). The upper limit on sodium isn’t my suggestion. It comes from a panel of experts, and often different panels come up with different limits. One group sets the upper daily limit at 2,400 mg of sodium. Another would like people to use less, somewhere in the range of 1,200 mg to 1,500 mg. The 2,400 mg amount is equal to one teaspoon of salt. That doesn’t mean you’re allowed to fill up a teaspoon with salt and use that whole teaspoon on food throughout the day. It indicates total sodium intake. People get 77 percent of their total daily sodium from processed and restaurant foods, things like commercial soups, frozen foods and luncheon meats. Another 12 percent comes from the sodium found naturally in foods. Six percent comes from salt sprinkled at the table, and 5 percent from salt added during cooking. You can cut 11 percent of your sodium intake by eliminating the last two sources. For salt added during the processing of foods, you have to read labels. The percentage of sodium listed on labels indicates the percent of the recommended daily sodium intake found in a serving of that food.

The booklet on sodium and potassium discusses these minerals in detail. To obtain a copy, write to: Dr. Donohue -No. 202W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: What can you tell me about an illness called Paget’s in the brain? A dear friend of mine was told she had it after she had a brain scan. I would like to know what to look for so I can help her without making it obvious and upsetting her. Will this kill her soon? -- Anon. ANSWER: I have to believe that your friend has Paget’s disease of the skull. Paget’s is a bone disease, and the bones most often affected are the pelvic bones, the backbones, the skull, the thigh bone and the lower leg bone. This illness affects 3 percent of those older than 40. It comes about from an acceleration of the normal daily breakdown and buildup of bones. The breakdown phase suddenly speeds up. That throws the buildup phase into high gear, and the new bone that results is misshapen and fragile. Quite often, the process occurs only in a limited section of one bone. When that’s the case, the illness doesn’t present a health threat. Paget’s disease of the skull can cause headaches, hearing disturbances or a malfunction of the nerves that come from the brain. The symptoms depend on what part of the skull is affected and the size of the affected area. Some have no symptoms.

For people with symptoms, medicines used for osteoporosis are also used for Paget’s disease. Occasionally, surgery is necessary. I doubt if your friend’s lifespan will be shortened. Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.

Black or green, tea is brimming with heart-healthy benefits. Compounds in green and black teas have a healthful impact on several markers of heart disease risk, but debate continues as to which kind of tea is healthiest. Recent research suggests it may be a dead heat. In a study, green and black tea appeared equally protective against fatty arterial plaque buildup.

TOO STRONG ON THE IRON? Are your fortified foods overloading you with iron? Read the labels and take note. A small percentage of American adults with already high iron stores may need to be especially careful not to overdo it with iron in their diets. The combination of high iron stores and excessive iron intake may increase cancer risk, research suggests. Limit yourself to 18 milligrams per day and read labels to stay on target.

ave you ever tried taking a brisk walk, jump roping, bicycling, swimming, or running to curb your appetite? Some studies suggest that aerobic exercise before meals can help you control your appetite and eat less. This is possibly due to an increase in body temperature and a change in hormone levels. Also, regular exercise can reduce the appetite. This is due in part by modifying the insulin response to

reduce an upward spike in insulin levels that is associated with increased appetite. This helps control blood sugar levels, which helps keep you in a steady state associated with fullness. For long term exercise programs, however, appetite may remain unchanged or slightly increase. But at this level of activity, you’re probably not eating enough fat and calories to make up for the fat and calories you’re burning off! So if that high-fiber snack or glass of water didn’t get rid of the munchies, try an exercise activity to help you control your hunger!

10 WAYS TO AVOID HOLIDAY ARGUMENTS 4. Identify the Real Issue: Is the issue that your brother isn’t hosting the holiday dinner, or that he doesn’t visit your mother in her retirement home?

A

woman threw a cookbook at her sister-in-law and screamed, “Maybe now you can cook a holiday dinner for us sometime.” “People become stressed during the holidays, so they’re more likely to be bothered or blow up at another person’s behavior,” says business etiquette expert Barbara Pachter. “Plus, we tend to have the same conflicts year after year that don’t get resolved.” Pachter, author of “The Power of Positive Confrontation,” suggests using her 10 “polite and powerful” suggestions for handling holiday conflict: 1. Accept What You Can and Can’t Influence: If your father has remarried, he will bring his wife to the New Year’s brunch. 2. Ask Yourself, “Does It Really Matter?”: If you see your uncle only once a year, can you tolerate his behavior? 3. Learn to Confront Positively: If you have avoided confrontation or have confronted aggressively in the past, don’t feel bad about yourself. Most people were never taught how to be “polite and powerful.” Make it your New Year’s resolution to learn how to confront in a more positive fashion.

5. Prepare What You Will Say: Practice saying the words out loud. Listen to how they sound. Be polite, not harsh. Don’t attack the other person with statements such as “You’re selfish” or “You’re such a cheap-skate.” These types of accusations are counterproductive and can lead to more conflict. 6. Be Clear About What You Want From the Person: If you would like your sister-in-law to contribute to the holiday dinner, be specific. “Joan, will you bring a vegetable dish on Sunday?” 7. Confront in Private: If others hear the conversation, it can be embarrassing to the other person. 8. Provide Enough Information: If you want your mother to limit the number of computer games she gives your son, tell her why. When you tell others the reason for your request, it may influence their behavior. 9. Listen to the Other Person’s Response: He or she may offer an alternative or provide an explanation for the behavior. Your sister may not be planning to fly home for the holidays because of financial difficulties she is too embarrassed to discuss. 10. And If You Don’t Get What You Want, Can You Live With the Behavior? Is it worth ending the relationship? Do the benefits of the relationship outweigh its drawbacks?

W

hen I made this for the first time I let the coffee mixture get too firm so it was lumpy in the whip cream which gave it some texture. The 2nd time I made this I didn’t let the coffee set hardly

at all and didn’t whip the whipping cream until stiff so it was more like a cappuccino jello thing. When I made the coffee for this I made it very, very strong the day before so it was chilled. Because of that, I added the gelatin to the coffee and then heated it in the microwave just enough to dissolve the gelatin and sugar. I left out the cold water. To garnish this you could top it with a little shaved chocolate and/or some cinnamon, some chopped nuts, or some fresh berries. You could also add in your favorite flavored coffee syrup or liquor to the coffee before chilling it. I chilled these in little soufflé cups but you could use any type of mold and turn it out on to a nice plate. I also have some little individual molds that I got handed down from one of my great grandmothers that would have worked well too. You could also just make it in a bowl and serve from that too if you wanted to be very casual.

BAYOU BARBQ

MERRY MERLOT

D

eep color, medium to full body, high alcohol. and low tannin are the characteristics of wines made from the Merlot grape [mur-LO]. Merlot is the red-wine success of the 1990s. In California and around the world, its popularity has soared along with its acreage, and it seems wine lovers can’t drink enough of it. It dominates Bordeaux (its home), except for the Médoc and Graves. The aromas and flavors can be plumy or sometimes chocolatey. For many people Merlot is much easier to like than Cabernet Sauvignon because it’s less tannic. Some winemakers, however, feel that Merlot isn’t satisfactory in its own right, and thus often blend it with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, or both. Very versatile with almost all foods.

RED CABBAGE FLAVORS FALL FEAST

C

ertain foods remind me of fall. A tray of beautiful red cabbages with a hint of purple and blue on their ruffled leaves resembles a bouquet of flowers. Raw red cabbage is a flavorful addition to salads, or it can be slow-cooked to sweet perfection as a side dish. One of my favorite recipes for red cabbage is in award-winning cooking instructor Rick Rodgers’s newest cookbook, “Autumn Gatherings: Casual Food to Enjoy With Family and Friends” (Morrow Cookbooks). From cabbage, squash and root vegetables to cranberries, apples and hearty, savory dishes, Rodgers shares uncomplicated recipes that are perfect for a cozy, comforting meal or a holiday feast. This week’s recipe, which features red cabbage, sausages and apples, is a classic example of German cooking and celebrates the bounty of the season. Rodger says that he “learned early in my cooking life not to try and rush the cabbage, as it needs plenty of time to soften into the melting mass of sweet and sour ingredients that makes it so unique, and becomes the perfect place to cook your favorite sausages.” The apples and apple juice enhances the sweetness of the cabbage, and the vinegar preserves the color of the cabbage. The flavors of the dish intensify the next day, so if possible, prepare the cabbage ahead of time. Nestle the sausages in the pot, let them cook while the cabbage is re-heating, and enjoy the flavors of fall! OKTOBERFEST SAUSAGES WITH RED CABBAGE 3 tablespoons vegetable oil, divided 6 slices thick-sliced bacon, coarsely chopped

1 large onion, thinly sliced 2 Golden Delicious apples, peeled, cored and cut into 1/4-inch thick wedges 1 (2 1/2-pound) head red cabbage, cut into wedges, core removed and thinly sliced 1 1/2 cups apple juice 1/3 cup cider vinegar 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme 1 bay leaf Salt and freshly ground black pepper 12 assorted sausages, such as bratwurst, Weisswurst, hot links and knockwurst, pricked with a fork 1. To make the red cabbage and apples, heat 1 tablespoon of the oil in a very large Dutch oven or flameproof casserole over medium heat. Add the bacon and cook, stirring occasionally, until crisp and browned, about 8 minutes. Using a slotted spoon, transfer to paper towels to drain, leaving the fat in the pan. 2. Add the onion and cook, stirring often, until golden, about 10 minutes. Transfer to a bowl. Add the remaining 2 tablespoons of oil in the Dutch oven and heat until hot but not smoking. Add the apples and cook, stirring often, until lightly browned, about 3 minutes. Add the cabbage, apple juice, vinegar, brown sugar, thyme and bay leaf, and stir well to coat the cabbage with the liquid. (The vinegar helps the cabbage hold its color.) Bring to a boil over high heat. Reduce heat to medium-low and cover. Simmer, stirring occasionally, until the cabbage is tender, about 1 1/2 hours. Season with salt and pepper to taste. 3. Bury the sausages in the cabbage and cover. Cook until they are heated through, about 12 minutes. Using a slotted spoon, transfer the cabbage and sausages to a large serving bowl, removing the bay leaf, and tent with aluminum foil. Bring the cooking liquid in the pot to a boil over high heat and cook, stirring often, until reduced to about 1/2 cup, about 5 minutes. Pour over the cabbage and sausages and serve hot. Makes 6 servings. *** Angela Shelf Medearis is an award-winning children’s author, a culinary historian and the author of five cookbooks. HOLIDAY DECORATIONS AND PETS: BE AWARE! Article submitted by Jeff Martin All Critters…Pet Sitters

T

he holidays are joyous times that bring special cards, gifts decorated with ribbons, tinsel or yarn, and wonderful decorations such as Christmas trees and poinsettias. Unfortunately, animals appreciate these items too; and many of them can cause serious damage. Here is a list of things to be aware of during the holiday season.

CHRISTMAS TREES • Anchor trees securely. Climbing pets with wagging tails can knock over your tree. • Hang breakable ornaments well out of reach. The small glass and metal fastenings can be stepped on or swallowed by your pet. • Keep tinsel, ribbons and garland out of pets’ reach, especially cats that are intrigued by them. These can become lodged in their intestines, cause obstructions and lead to surgery or death. • Clean up pine needles frequently. They can be toxic when eaten by your pet. • Prevent your pet from drinking water in the tree stand if you have added preservative chemicals. These can be poisonous to pets. Also, stagnant water can contain bacteria, which may lead to vomiting and diarrhea if ingested.

HOLIDAY HOUSE PLANTS Although they add a warm touch, many plants can harm your pets. • Lilies can be deadly to cats, with

some types causing kidney failure. • Poinsettias, although not as toxic as people think, can upset your pet’s digestive system. • Mistletoe, especially the berries, is highly toxic, can cause stomach upset or even potentially fatal heart problems. • Holly can cause vomiting, diarrhea, nausea and lethargy. • Certain types of ivy, such as English ivy, can cause severe harm. • Amaryllis can cause vomiting and diarrhea. • Hibiscus can cause diarrhea.

LIGHTS, CANDLES AND FRAGRANCE • Keep lights and extension cords safely secured/covered to deter chewing, which can lead to electric shock or electrocution. Better yet, invest in petproof extension cords, or spray with products such as Bitter Apple or Chew Stop. • Fragrant candles can entice pets, creating a fire hazard if knocked over by an exuberant pet; and the fumes can be harmful to birds. • Exposure to liquid potpourri, popular during the holidays, can be very dangerous, potentially causing skin or damage, illness or death to your pet. So, enjoy all the wonderful things that make the holidays special, just remember to keep your pets in mind and take precautionary measures when adding all the festive touches to your home.

ax laws change all the time — and these changes can have a big impact on your investments. But if you have some inkling of these changes in advance, you may be able to make decisions that can help you stay on track toward achieving your financial goals. Such is the case with dividend-paying stocks. Until a few years ago, dividends were taxed at your personal income tax rate. But changes in tax laws resulted in a 15 percent tax rate on dividends for most people. This rate was set to expire in 2008, but it has been extended until the end of 2010. At that point, dividends will again be taxed at your individual tax rate, which currently could be as high as 35%. Of course, things can change. As an alternative to taxing dividends at an individual’s income tax rate, lawmakers could decide to impose a higher fixed rate than the current 15 percent. At this point — and maybe at any point — no one can predict these things. Nonetheless, as you prepare your investment strategy, you may want to factor in the possibility that, in the near future, dividends will be taxed at a higher rate than they are now. If this happens, should you still consider adding dividend-paying stocks to your portfolio? To answer that question, you’ll want to assess the benefits that dividendpaying stocks may offer, regardless of how they are taxed. Here are a few of them: Potential for rising income — Some stocks have paid — and increased — dividends for many years. So, if you’re looking for a possible source of rising income that can help you combat the effects of inflation, you might want to consider these types

of stocks. (Keep in mind, though, that companies may decrease or discontinue dividends at any time without notice.) Stability during market turmoil — As you are no doubt aware, the stock market has gone through some difficult times for much of 2008. Generally speaking, though, dividend-paying stocks are less volatile than those stocks that don’t pay dividends. Furthermore, historically in down markets, dividend-paying stocks tend to outperform non-dividend-paying stocks, although past performance is not an indication of future results. Ownership of quality companies — Dividend-paying stocks usually represent well-run businesses that seek to reward their investors. In fact, these are the companies that actually have money to pay the dividends. And despite the many “fads” you can find in the investment world, investing in quality companies never goes out of style. Ability to increase ownership shares — If you consistently reinvest your dividends, you’ll boost the number of shares you own. This can be particularly beneficial when the market recovers and stock prices rise. If you invest in dividend-paying stocks, it would be advantageous if the tax rate were to stay at its current 15 percent level. But even if the tax rate were to rise, you’ve got plenty of good reasons to consider adding these types of stocks to your portfolio — so give them some serious consideration.

he Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation recently increased insurance coverage on bank accounts to $250,000. Until the increase, accounts were covered up to $100,000, except for retirement savings, which have been covered to $250,000 since 2006. The increase, however, is temporary. The new increased coverage will run through Dec. 31, 2009, at which time the coverage will be reduced to the previous $100,000 amount. The new insurance coverage is as follows: • Single owner account: $250,000 • Joint account $250,000: per co-owner • Trust Accounts $250,000: per owner per beneficiary These amounts apply to the total amount that is deposited in a bank. For example, if you have both checking and sav-

ings at one bank, those amounts would be added together subject to the $250,000 cap. If you’re concerned about the safety of your present bank, consider spreading your money between multiple banks and account types, or investigate credit unions as an option to traditional banks. Credit unions aren’t in business for profits, and most of them have been less likely to make the risky sub-prime housing loans that have been the downfall of banks across the country. Shareholders are the members, and having a credit-union account is a good way to get started in the credit world should you need a loan. To keep credit unions on equal footing with banks, they have been included in the increased insurance coverage legislation. Credit unions aren’t covered by the FDIC. Instead they are chartered by the National Credit Union Administration and covered by the National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund. No money has ever been lost in a credit-union failure because of the insurance. Keep an eye on the FDIC Web site [www.fdic.gov] for press releases and the Consumers and Communities section for up-to-date information. Click on Industry Analysis and Bank Data and Statistics to check on a specific bank. You’ll also be able to research comparisons between banks and individual bank ratings reports. The Failed Banks link will provide specific information about where accounts of failed banks have been transferred. You can link from the FDIC site or go directly to www. myfdicinsurance.gov to see how much of your bank account balances are covered by the new legislation. If the parties are not in total agreement, the Court will require the parties to mediate their dispute before the Court will hold a trial to settle any differences. The parties make their own decisions.

Both “Don’t Be Cruel” and “Hound Dog” stayed at No. 1 for 11 weeks. 4. “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” hit No. 1 on the charts in December 1961 and stayed there for three weeks. 5. The Brothers Gibb, also known as the Bee Gees, were Maurice, Barry and Robin. Maurice died in 2003 and the remaining brothers stopped performing as the Bee Gees. 6. His father, a high-school band teacher.

GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A recent development enhances that special relationship. Spending more time together also helps make the bonding process stronger. Expect news about a possible career change.

LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Feeling alone in a crowd during the early part of the week is an unsettling emotion. But your spirits soon perk up, putting you into the right mood to start making holiday plans. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A pesky problem should be dealt with immediately so you can put your time and effort into something more important. Someone from your past could have significant news for you. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) High-energy aspects dominate, both on the job and at home. Use this time to put some long-range plans into operation. Things level off later in the week. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Even the usually gregarious Goat might feel overwhelmed by a flurry of activities. Be patient. Things soon return to your normal social routine.

CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A suspicious situation should be dealt with before it leads to serious problems. Get all the facts needed to resolve it. Then refocus your energies on those tasks that need your attention.

AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Career choices that seem too confusing to deal with at this point probably are. More information would help uncomplicate them. On the personal side, a friend might need your advice.

LEO (July 23 to August 22) Try to be more open-minded in working toward a resolution of that standoff between yourself and a colleague or family member. A little flexibility now could work to your advantage later.

PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Your Piscean imagination is stimulated by possibilities you see in a new opportunity. But keep those ideas to yourself until you feel ready to translate them into a workable format.

VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) You might feel a bit threatened by a proposed workplace change. The best way to deal with it is to ask questions. You’ll find that those involved will be happy to provide you with the facts.

BORN THIS WEEK: You have an ingratiating way of helping people deal with their fears. Have you considered a career in social work or with the clergy?
