“A New Year’s resolution is something that goes in one year and out the other.” -Author Unknown
I
t’s Jan. 5, 2009. Do you know what happened to your New Year’s resolutions? If you are like half the population, your resolutions have already gone by the wayside and another fourth of us will have completely forgotten those goals in another week. However, we at Snippetz think it’s never too late for a good old fashioned New Year’s resolution.
EVOLUTION OF THE RESOLUTIONS
Making New Year’s resolutions goes back many centuries to as early as 2000 B.C. when the Babylonian New Year began with the first new moon after the first day of spring in March. The time of the year signaled the beginning of the planting season and a good time to start the new year. A typical resolution at the time was to return borrowed farm equipment from neighbors. By 153 B.C., Jan. 1 was declared to be the official New Year by the Romans after years of changing the date on the whim of the emperor of the time. January was eventually selected because the month was named after Janus, the mythical god of beginnings and guardian of entrances. Janus was said to have two faces – one in the front and one in the back in order to see the past and look forward to the future. Even after 153 B.C. the calendar would change somewhat until Julius Caesar finally established the Julian Calendar and declared Jan. 1 to be the official start of the year beginning in 46 B.C. to be synchronized with the sun. Interestingly enough, in order to make this change, 47 B.C. had to be 445 days long. New Year’s Resolutions... Continued on Page 2

New Year’s Resolutions... continued from page 1
RESOLUTION NUMBERS
• About 45 percent of Americans make resolutions regularly and 38 percent never make resolutions. • A mere 8 to 12 percent are successful in achieving their resolutions. • One in four fail every resolution they set. • Almost half experience some success with their resolutions…on occasion. • The youth in their 20’s tend to achieve their resolutions about 39 percent of the time whereas only about 15 percent of the over 50 crowd sticks with goal setting. • Men are most successful when they set goals in measurable and specific steps. • Women are more successful when they tell their friends and enlist support from others.
POPULAR RESOLUTIONS
Most resolutions involve doing something positive to improve our lives. Others involve not doing something to make life better, e.g. not smoking. Those of us who indulge in resolutions usually make more than one: • Over 45 percent of people make resolutions that relate to self-improvement, such as getting fit, quitting smoking, cutting down on stress and furthering their education. • Thirty-eight percent want to lose weight. • Almost equally, 34 percent make resolutions related to finances, i.e. paying off debts and/or saving money. • And improving relationships has a fairly strong showing of 31 percent. Other popular resolutions involve volunteering, getting organized and having a successful career.
KEEPING IT SIMPLE
Statistics also show that only about a quarter of us actually stick with our resolutions for more than a week or two. Most people get caught up in the New Year’s spirit, then lose their momentum after they return to the daily grind post-holidays. Resolutions involving major changes may fall by the wayside if they are too difficult and too far reaching to accomplish with ease. Keeping the resolution simple and breaking goals into baby steps might be the key to making progress toward improvement.
LOSING WEIGHT AND GETTING PHYSICALLY HEALTHIER
• Vow to lose a pound or two a month rather than declaring “I’m going to lose 50 pounds!” • Instead of drinking soda, drink water for one

(719) 481-1981 month. • Cut down on fast food visits – if you typically indulge weekly, then cut those visits down to once a month. Same goes for replacing other unhealthy foods with healthy foods. • Start walking the dog again. • Get a physical exam. • Make a list of healthy snacks and try to grab one of those everyday instead of the bag of chips.
GETTING FINANCIALLY HEALTHIER
• Start a log or journal of expenditures to see where the money goes. • Replace two of the weekly visits to your favorite coffee shop and make your own coffee at home. • Replace one lunch out per week with bringing lunch from home. • Pay cash - don’t put anything on a credit card. • Start saving or paying down debt with what you would have spent on the little things. • Request your credit report from all three agencies – this is free.
SELF-IMPROVEMENT
• Take a course for fun – photography, foreign language, pottery, cooking. • Take a course to learn a new skill for career enhancement – computer skills, writing. • Join a book club – good for establishing new relationships, too. • Keep a journal.
IMPROVING RELATIONSHIPS
• Schedule at least two meals per week with the whole family and without the TV or cell phones on. • Visit an elderly neighbor or family friend who you haven’t seen in awhile. • Take a friend out to lunch. • Invite your neighbors over for Sunday breakfast. • Call your mother. • Start a monthly movie night and invite friends or neighbors. • Write a letter to an old friend – not an e-mail but a real handwritten letter.

HELPING OTHERS
Join a community group. Tutor a child. Clean out your closet and donate unused items. Start a recycling program in your own home. Volunteer for a fund raiser.
GETTING ORGANIZED
• Make lists. • Keep a work and family calendar and update it regularly. • Tackle one pile, one drawer or one cabinet each week to clean up and organize for the end goals of eliminating clutter and being able to find everything you need when you need it.

KEEPING A RESOLUTION
Not keeping a resolution is a source of guilt and makes one feel like a failure, so if you stray from the goal of the resolution, just get back to it. People who stick to their resolutions for a two-year period are said to have up to 14 slip-ups or setbacks.
NEIGHBORING RESOLUTIONS My resolution is to work smarter and be able to spend more time with my family. I would like to cook more meals instead of always eating on the run. -Elizabeth Bryson Mine always remain the same: Stop thinking, planning and worrying about what MIGHT be coming or COULD happen and be fully “in the moment.” Along the same lines, I try to not let myself get consumed by things I cannot control. Worrying about things gives me lots to do, but it doesn’t really get me anywhere. Finally, yell less at my girls, lose 15 pounds, eat more veggies and exercise every day...just the normal! -Diane Roscoe To make a difference in my disabled brother’s life. I want to find a better living situation for him that is productive and will give him a more positive outlook on life. I’d also like to be able to make a large donation towards the research for a cure for his disease. I would also like to help women who are struggling with difficult decisions and want a better life for themselves and their families. -Claire Boynton

A greener year - be more conscientious about recycling paper, plastic, glass, aluminum and electronics and bring our own bags on shopping trips. This is almost as hard to do as it was to start wearing seat belts years ago! Be a better neighbor - reunite and invite neighbors to house parties they can ‘walk’ to. Carpool with others and drive only when I need to. Combine errands and ask a neighbor if I can run an errand for them. -Arleen Kinder

HOW TO WIGGLE OUT OF THE MUD
By Dr. Ron Ross
NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS
M
ost folks make at least of a couple of New Year’s resolutions. Here are some suggestions followed by the reality of everyday living: • “Let go of your guilt.” Are you kidding? You are guilty. If you had any sense of shame at all you would be totally depressed. • “Channel your imagination into everincreasing levels of creativity.” There are several good reasons for you to be consumed by suspicion and paranoia. • “Walk a mile in a man’s shoes before you criticize him.” That way when you do criticize him he’ll be a mile away and barefoot. • “Receive criticism with grace and dignity.” Unless it comes from a family member, a friend, an associate, or a stranger. • “Don’t talk about other people.” Let’s see, I guess that means the only person we can talk about is me! • “Never look back.” The traffic in front of you might suddenly slow down and you’ll rear-end somebody. • “Be willing to share you’re experience and advice with those around you.” It’s so much fun being able to say later on, “I told you so.” • “Do something that will increase your heart rate and improve your muscle tone.” Take your computer out in the garage and beat it to death with a tire iron. • “Be willing to express yourself more

openly.” Check state and local laws first. • “If someone hurts you, forgive them immediately.” Meaningful and satisfying retaliation takes great thought and careful preparation. • “Assume full responsibility for your actions.” Except those caused by others. • “Be more intuitive.” It might make up for your lack of intelligence and sound judgment. • “Live each day with integrity.” If you do, does that mean you can live each night with corruption? • “Celebrate each holiday just like you did when you were a child.” Your credit cards are all charged up, your house payment is late, and your car needs brakes. Face it, you can’t afford to celebrate the way you would like to. • “Be brave in the face of danger.” On the other hand, cowardice is much easier and usually less painful. • “Change your diet to include mainly health foods.” Unless you are old. Then you need all the preservatives you can get. • “Relax more.” Unless you feel more comfortable tense. • “Become a better communicator.” Otherwise, just shut up. • “Get out there and try to change the world for the better.” But don’t you dare mess with the status quo. • “Lose twenty pounds.” Here’s how: Take a two-week trip to Mexico, drink the water and eat the food. • “Be sincere.” If you can’t, at least try to fake it. • “Be yourself.” Unless you’re an idiot. • “Get all of your temporal affairs in order.” After all, you may live another twenty years. Now some comments from a few who’ve been there, done that: • “There are days when it takes all you’ve got just to keep up with the losers. –Robert Orben • “I know a man who gave up smoking, drinking, sex, and rich food. He was healthy right up to the time he killed himself.” –Johnny Carson • “Never eat more than you can lift.” –Miss Piggy • “Never write inane maxims.” –Dr. Ronnie Ross

• In 19th-century England, one Dr. William Palmer was suspected of going on a killing spree, poisoning his mother-in-law, his wife, his brother, five of his children and at least two people to whom he owed money. He was finally brought to trial for the murder of his friend John Parsons Cook, who had become violently ill and then died after having dinner at Palmer’s home. Palmer was convicted and sentenced to be hanged. As he was mounting the gallows, witnesses claim that Palmer looked at the trapdoor and exclaimed, “Are you sure it’s safe?” • If you’re ever lost in the wilderness of the eastern central part of North America, it might help to look for Silphium laciniatum, better known as the compass flower or compass plant. This perennial herb resembles the sunflower and can grow from 3 to 12 feet tall. The plant’s usefulness is based on the fact that its leaves tend to orient themselves so that they point north and south.

SENIOR NEWS LINE by Matilda Charles
ALL RETIREMENTS ARE NOT CREATED EQUAL
N
ot all of us are retired. Many seniors are just now wrapping up long careers or are going back to work for economic reasons. Some of us are looking for a different way to spend our retirement years. “What’s Next In Your Life? How to Find Meaning Beyond the Money” is about how to retire in a new way -- without the stress that often comes with such a drastic change of life. We face new daily routines, plans that don’t pan out, the loss of identity if it was tied with our profession, and disappointments in the choices we thought we’d be happy with. Then there’s the simple fact of money: If we don’t have enough to retire, we have to keep working.

Many of us want to keep working, though, apart from financial reasons. The authors quote a study that revealed that 71 percent of us plan to keep working after we retire, and of those, a whopping 66 percent want to have a new profession. The question this book helps answer is: How do we know what to do next?
The exhibit will be open from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Admission is free. The opening reception will be held on Saturday, February 7th. More than 30 PLAG member artists will exhibit a wide variety of art works in different media. The artistry of the group’s members has been widely recognized throughout the Tri-Lakes and Colorado Springs areas.
Whether you’re retired or just thinking about it, take a look at this book. Written by Joan Strewler-Carter and Stephen T. Carter, “What’s Next” (Rockhill Books) comes with a manual and a Web site. The manual guides you step by step through forming a new life plan by looking at the nonfinancial aspects of retirement.

A: Many thanks for the heads-up, Jack! Portable generators are just one item that produces carbon monoxide. Other appliances that can be a problem are home furnaces and fireplaces -- basically, any device that uses combustion to produce heat, because that item also produces exhaust.
CO poisoning can occur very quickly. If your home's CO detector sounds the alarm or you experience symptoms, don't take chances -- get everyone out of the house immediately and call 911.

An insightful look at Health
by Dr. Christy Meislahn
HOW MUCH IS YOUR HEALTH WORTH?
I
t’s hard to put a price tag on something as important as your health, but each of us does by the choices we make, the habits we keep and the priorities we set. It’s no surprise that those of us who have chosen careers in health care tend to place a high value on our health. Besides regular chiropractic care, we attend to countless other things to protect and advance our health. (Curious what they are? Ask me at your next visit.) Since we’d like to see everyone benefit from a better functioning nervous system, when we find out that someone has discontinued their care because they can’t afford it, we’re concerned. Are our fees out of line? Turns out it’s rarely about money. Usually, it’s just about priorities. Finances become a convenient excuse. Each of us has been given the free will to prioritize our health the way we see fit. True, most of us take our health fo9r granted until we lose it, but that may just be human nature. If other issues in your life require more attention than your health, we understand. No need to make excuses, feel embarrassed or

We’re servants. It’s your body, your health and your future. You’re the boss. We’re not interested in judging you or second-guessing your decisions. Simply put, our job is to offer you the finest chiropractic care possible. And it’s your job to decide how much of it you want. Quite simple really. No guilt. No shame. No problem.

still worry. Does this turn into cancer? -- V.B. ANSWER: Fibrocystic breast disease shouldn’t be called a disease. It has been renamed “fibrocystic changes.” “Disease” is not a word that can be used when 60 percent of premenopausal women have the condition.
FIBROCYSTIC BREASTS DON’T UP CANCER RISK
“Fibro” refers to strands of scar tissue. Cysts are fluid-filled sacs. With fibrocystic breast changes, both breasts are usually involved, something that rarely happens in cancer. The cysts are soft and feel like they’re made of rubber. They can be painful, especially in the days before a menstrual period. Cancers are solitary, hard masses that cannot be pushed around, like a cyst can.
DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Both my left and right breasts have many lumps. They scared me, so I saw an OB/GYN doctor. She spent a long time examining my breasts and told me I had fibrocystic breast disease and that it was nothing to worry about. I had a mammogram, and no cancer was seen. I
Fibrocystic breast changes are not cancer and don’t become cancer. If they do become painful, take Tylenol or one of the anti-inflammatory medicines like Aleve or Advil. Some women find that eliminating caffeine eliminates the pain of fibrocystic breasts. Others have gotten relief by adopting a high-carbo-
Breast cancer is on every woman’s mind. The booklet on it describes it, its detection and treatment in detail. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 1101W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: My wife has been going through menopause for the past eight years. We have not been intimate through these years. When I bring up the subject of intimacy, she quickly states that she doesn’t want to talk about it. She won’t even hug me. My wife is only 53 years old. It seems like she will be going through menopause for the rest of her life. I have been patient, but I would like to have my wife back. If you could give me some advice, it would be greatly appreciated. -- J.T. ANSWER: Menopause can lessen sexual drive, but it shouldn’t completely eliminate it, and menopause doesn’t usually drag on for eight years.
11
Sexual desire is a complex process that involves hormones, nerves, blood vessels, general health and the brain. The brain is, perhaps, the most important element. Your wife needs professional help. Her total lack of sexual desire at a young age and for so long could be a physical problem, so the family doctor is the place to start. If, as is more likely the case, it is a psychological problem, the doctor can start treatment for that, or can refer her to a specialist. You have been more than patient. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Does regular running cancel the danger of smoking cigarettes? My boyfriend says it does. -- K.H. ANSWER: Your boyfriend is delusional. *** Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. PERSONALIZING
W
When you sign up for 8 weeks
henever you hear people make negative comments such as, “Some people have no self-control,” or “Many people are unhealthy;” do you feel such comments are directed towards you? If you do, then you are “personalizing” the comments people make. These comments may be made by others and have nothing to do with you, yet you tend to believe that they are about you. This results in you feeling hurt because you believe that people are attacking your character. This may lead to you criticizing yourself, and then turning to food to feel better. If you feel you are guilty of personalizing, you need to realize that this is
a form of distorted thinking. You need to become aware of these times when you personalize and criticize yourself because of comments others make. Recognize that this kind of thinking is affecting how you perceive yourself, and your self-worth. This lack of self-esteem can prevent you from staying motivated to do well on your weight loss program. Remind yourself that not everything that people discuss is about you. Accept the fact that you may have flaws, but nobody is perfect. Remember that it is only a belief that people talk about you all the time, not reality. It’s a belief that can be changed so that you can accept the facts and think positively about yourself and your weight loss efforts.

ith belts tightening everywhere, it’s more important than ever to look for ways to save money. Pennies count, and you can hold on to many of them if you surround yourself with a network of money-saving opportunities and make it a way of life. • Get involved in a food-supply group. Angel Food Ministries [www.angelfoodministries.com], for example, makes bulk purchases of food and has distribution points in 38 states. The cost of the food is very low. Often the program is run by local churches, but there are no qualification requirements. Once a month, orders are taken and the food delivered to a central location. If there is no distribution group near you, look into starting one. • Look for other low-cost food distribution groups in your area. Do an Internet search for “low cost food” and put in your town and state. • On FreeCycle [www.freecycle.org], you can ask for what you need and give away what you don’t need. Areas are broken down by ZIP code across the
12
• Check the craigslist [www.craigslist. org] Free section for your area before spending money. Lots of useful items are being given away all the time. • Do it yourself, for everything possible. Need clothing altered, a roof repaired, oil in the car changed? Read up on it. There are manuals and howto books for everything under the sun. If you can learn how to do a task, not only will you save yourself money, but you’ll then have a skill that’s valuable to others. Assess your skills and see what you might barter for things you need. • Consider adopting a philosophy of voluntary simplicity where less is more. Voluntary simplicity can put a whole new face on a tight budget. Instead of feeling pressure about what you can’t buy, in a simpler lifestyle you won’t want extras cluttering your life. The less stuff you buy, the less you have to take care of and the more money you keep in your pocket. Bottom line: Become extremely proprietary about your cash. Take a hard look at each and every situation in which you might spend money. Make every penny count. FINANCIAL FOCUS MAKE YOUR NEW YEAR’S FINANCIAL RESOLUTIONS Provided by Adam Grayson of EdwardJones Investments
I
f you’re like many people, you’ve made some New Year’s resolutions. Perhaps you’ve vowed to go the gym more often, or learn a new language or reconnect with long-lost friends. All these are worthy goals, of course, but at the same time, you don’t want to neglect one of the most important areas of your life — your finances. So this year, why not make some financial resolutions? Here are a few to consider: Stay calm. As you’re well aware, 2008 was not exactly a stellar year for the stock market. What will 2009 bring? No one can say for sure, but it seems likely that we are in for some volatility in the months ahead as we slog our way through the recession. As an investor, your best move is to stay calm and remain focused on your long-term goals. Review your financial strategy to make sure it’s still appropriate for your risk tolerance, family situation and time horizon. Increase your 401(k) contributions. Even though you might not have enjoyed looking at your 401(k) statements during 2008, it’s still a good idea to boost your contributions for 2009. Why? For one thing, you typically invest pre-tax dollars in your 401(k), so the more you put in, the lower your annual taxable income. And your earnings grow on a taxdeferred basis, which means your money can grow faster than it would if placed in an account on which you paid taxes every year. Furthermore, you can adjust your investment mix to reflect changes in your risk tolerance and your proximity to retire-
ment. Build an emergency fund. It’s a good idea to build an emergency fund containing six to 12 months’ worth of living expenses, held in a liquid account. If you face an unexpected expense — such as a major medical bill or a costly car repair — you don’t want to be forced into cashing out any stocks, especially if their price happens to be down. Diversify, diversify, diversify. In 2008, we witnessed something that’s unusual, though not unheard of: a bad year for stocks and bonds. In the past, it has more often been the case that when stocks are up, bonds are down, and vice versa. That’s why diversification makes so much sense: By spreading your dollars among an array of stocks, bonds, government securities, certificates of deposit and other investments, you can help reduce the impact of a downturn that primarily affects just one type of asset. Of course, diversification, by itself, cannot guarantee a profit or protect against a loss, but if you aren’t diversified at all, you are inviting significant risk into your investment portfolio. Stick with quality. During turbulent times, quality investments are your best bet for “weathering the storm.” If you’re buying stocks, look for those companies that have long track records of profitability, strong management teams, competitive products and solid business plans. If you’re considering bonds, find the ones that have received the highest ratings from the independent rating agencies. Finally, be patient, disciplined and forward-looking. The investment world has taken some knocks lately, but good investment opportunities are still out there. IT’S THE LAW! by Christopher C. Meyer, Attorney at Law, P.C.
THE MARRIAGE ZONE:
LEGAL SEPARATION © Christopher C. Meyer, October, 2007
I
f you want to part ways with your spouse in Colorado, there is an alternative to a divorce – legal separation. A legal separation involves a court proceeding that is, for all practical purposes, identical to a divorce proceeding. The results of a proceeding for legal separation and a divorce proceeding are also very similar. The parties’ assets and debts are divided, and all child-related issues are resolved. The big distinction between a divorce and a legal separation is that the divorce decree allows you to enter into a new marriage. A decree of legal separation does not permit you to enter into a new marriage, because you are still married. Another distinction between a divorce and a legal separation involves the permanence of the decree of legal separation. As soon as 6 months after the decree of legal separation is granted, if either party wants to have the decree of legal separation automatically converted into a decree of divorce, all that party has to do is file a motion with the Court and the request to have the legal separation converted into a divorce will be automatically granted. The legal separation really only lasts as long as the parties want it to. Why would someone want a legal separation? Some folks find a legal separation psychologically appealing since it does not involve an absolute end to the marital

CALL MICHAEL 719-338-7028 relationship. Others may prefer the legal separation concept for religious or ethical reasons. The main attraction of a legal separation, and the usual reason some people opt for the legal separation over a divorce, is that a legal separation may permit one spouse to retain spousal benefits from the other spouse such as health insurance coverage. However, it is important to keep in mind that health insurance coverage is a contractual relationship between the other spouse and that spouse’s benefit provider. A court cannot interfere with this contractual relationship due to the contract clause of the United States Constitution. You should not assume that you will be able to retain your spousal benefits if you get a legal separation. You should investigate whether the contract between your spouse and the benefit provider will permit you to retain your eligibility if you get a legal separation. Do not confuse legal separation with simple separation. Legal separation is just like a divorce except for the distinctions mentioned above. Simple separation means that you are no longer living together as man and wife. If you are married, simple separation does not create or extinguish legal obligations. If you are parting ways with your married spouse, the only way to avoid future financial or parental complications is to get a divorce or a legal separation. If you aren’t concerned about getting remarried, a legal separation will accomplish your goals, but it can be automatically converted into a divorce whether you want it to or not. Good luck to you if you are contemplating leaving the Marriage Zone, and remember that there are two exits: legal separation and divorce. Chris Meyer is an attorney practicing family law in Monument. 1. Use a pair of sharp scissors to snip the snag off of the carpet as close to the base as you can. 2. Line each side of the run with some masking tape as close to the edge as you can to protect the surrounding carpet.

EASY HOME REPAIRS! DO-IT-YOURSELF HOME MAINTENANCE Simple maintenance repairs will: …save you money in the long run, …bring a higher price for your home when you are ready to sell, …show your pride of ownership. Patching a Damaged Area of Carpet 1. Locate a carpet remnant from your original installation (or cut a piece from the back of a closet). Position an empty can on the nap side and press down firmly, allowing the rim to make a clear impression in the carpet. Then protect your hands with a sturdy pair of work gloves and carefully cut around the outline using a sharp carpet knife or utility knife. 2. Now you’re ready to cut out the damaged carpet area (deep stain, burn, or tear). Using the same can or container, press it down firmly over the damaged area, making a clear impression in the carpet. Then carefully cut along the outline with your utility knife.
3. Run a bead of carpet adhesive into the hole. 4. Use an awl to carefully guide each of the loops back into place. You’ll know where the loops begin and ends because there will be a little patch of the old adhesive along the length of the piece you’re working with where each loop was originally connected.

5. When the entire length of the snag is back in place, remove the masking tape from both sides and keep traffic off of the area until the adhesive dries. 3. Cut the adhesive carpet patch tape to fit the hole in the carpet. Carefully insert the piece(s) of adhesive tape into the cut out area and press firmly into place. 4. Next, identify the direction of the nap of the existing carpet and the replacement carpet. It is very important to match the direction of the nap in order for the patch to blend in. 5. Now you can insert the replacement piece of carpet. Apply extra pressure all around the edges of the new piece, working the fibers into the surrounding carpet. 6. If the fibers are slightly higher than those of the surrounding area; this is simply the difference between worn and unworn carpet. To even out the difference, simply lay a pair of scissors flat across the new section and carefully trim off just enough to blend the piece into the adjacent fibers. 7. Finally, it’s a good idea to set a heavy piece of furniture or stack of books, over the repaired section for a day or two to ensure that it is fully integrated.

GRAPY GRENACHE
G
renche [greh-NAHSH] Drought and heatresistant, it yields a fruity, spicy, mediumbodied wine with supple tannins. The second most widely planted grape in the world, Grenache is widespread in the southern Rhône and Spain. In California it’s a workhorse blending grape, though occasionally an old vineyard is found and its grapes made into a varietal wine, which at its best can be good. It may make a comeback as enthusiasts of Rhône style seek cooler areas and an appropriate blending grape. Try with more savory, slightly spicy dishes.

New DVD Releases for Week of Jan. 5, 2009 PICK OF THE WEEK “Pineapple Express” -- I’m usually not a fan of stoner movies. I liked Cheech and Chong’s “Up in Smoke” and “Cheech and Chong’s Next Movie,” and more recently “Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle,” but that’s about it. I think the reason I don’t go for the stoner humor is because most stoner movies are
funny only to audiences who are already stoned. And let’s face it, it doesn’t take much to make a stoner laugh. A french fry can provide hours of hilarity. “Pineapple Express” is one of those rare pot pictures that is funny to audiences who aren’t ripped on the wacky tabacky. It stars Seth Rogan and James Franco as two lovable potheads who get mixed up in a mob war after Rogan’s character witnesses a murder of an Asian gangster by a mobster and a crooked cop (Gary Cole and Rosie Perez). The script is hilarious, the acting is better than you’d expect from a movie like this, and the action scenes are well-executed. Definitely worth a look. DOGS OF THE WEEK “Babylon A.D.” -- This is perhaps the worst science-fiction movie ever made
that doesn’t have Uwe Boll’s name attached to it. French director Mathieu Kassovitz’s dystopian tale of a genetically manipulated “messiah” is a convoluted, plodding mishmash of “Blade Runner” and “Children of Men.” This movie was hacked up so badly in the editing room by the studio that Kassovitz publicly denounced the film. What was intended to be a commentary on organized religion and commerce and corruption became, instead, a bunch of action scenes strung together and no context. This isn’t even one of those movies that’s so bad it’s good. It’s just plain awful. “Righteous Kill” -- The big hoo-hah hype about this movie was that it was the Robert De Niro/Al Pacino movie that fans have been awaiting for some 30 years. Sadly, it should have been made 30 years
18
ago. After more than a decade of phoning it in, De Niro and Pacino look old, tired and bored -- just like the audiences who got suckered into seeing this stinker in the theaters. TV SERIES

Tim Rattay and Troy Edwards of Louisiana Tech, and Colt Brennan and Davone Bess of Hawaii. 4. Robert Parish had 996 in 1988-89. 5. The Carolina Hurricanes (who won the Cup in 2006). 6. FLASH BACK ANSWERS 1. Back in the early 1970s, the band, originally called the Noble Five, changed their name to Leonard Skinnerd after a strict teacher at their Jacksonville, Fla., high school. The “Lynyrd Skynyrd” spelling came at the release of their first album. 2. Alvin, Simon and Theodore formed The Chipmunks, a fictional group of three chipmunks famous for their song “Christmas Don’t Be Late.” The chipmunk voices were all done by one man, David Seville, who in 1958 learned how to change voices by altering the recording tape’s speed. 3. Burke did just one take. He left the studio because it was snowing and he had a snowplowing job to do. 4. Rod Stewart’s “Tonight’s the Night” stayed on the charts for 23 weeks. 5. Both Percy Sledge (1966) and Michael Bolton (1991) had No. 1 hits with the song.
LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A temporary setback could give you time to go over your plans to find weaknesses you might have overlooked before. A romantic getaway with that special person is favored this weekend.
ARIES (March 21 to April 19) It’s a good time to take a much-needed break from your recent hectic schedule and spend some time in quieter surroundings. Important news could arrive early next week.
SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Professional and personal situations benefit once you set a positive tone in getting things off to a good start. Honest dialogue smoothes over any occasional display of balkiness.
TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) The Taurean traits of reliability and thoroughness could be well-tested when decision-makers consider your proposals and/or requests. Be prepared to answer some probing questions.
SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A problem with workplace colleagues or family members seems to defy even your sage counsel. But be patient. Your words will eventually lead to a resolution.
GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A sudden attack of boredom leaves you with some tasks undone. It’s OK to take a short respite. But get back to work by week’s end so that you have time for other projects.
CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Don’t just wait out that unexpected and unexplained delay in your career move. You could gain added respect if you ask why it happened and what you can do to move things along.
CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Avoid prejudging a situation just because it looks bad. Facts could emerge that would make your position uncomfortable, to say the least. A relative has interesting news to share with you.
AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Although your workplace strategies usually are accepted, you could be challenged by someone who isn’t so favorably impressed. Be prepared to defend your positions.
LEO (July 23 to August 22) This is a good time to begin reassessing some of your recent decisions about your long-range goals to see if they still have merit. Spend more time with loved ones this weekend.
PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Your friendship circle expands, with new people coming into your life at this time. Welcome them warmly. But don’t neglect those cherished longtime personal relationships.
VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) An unsettled situation at home or on the job early in the week could drain your energy levels, making it difficult to get your work done on schedule. But things improve by midweek.
BORN THIS WEEK: You love to search for knowledge and share it with others. You would make an especially fine teacher.
