t’s Jan. 5, 2009. Do you know what happened to your New Year’s resolutions? If you are like half the population, your resolutions have already gone by the wayside and another fourth of us will have completely forgotten those goals in another week. However, we at Snippetz think it’s never too late for a good old fashioned New Year’s resolution.

EVOLUTION OF THE RESOLUTIONS

Making New Year’s resolutions goes back many centuries to as early as 2000 B.C. when the Babylonian New Year began with the first new moon after the first day of spring in March. The time of the year signaled the beginning of the planting season and a good time to start the new year. A typical resolution at the time was to return borrowed farm equipment from neighbors. By 153 B.C., Jan. 1 was declared to be the official New Year by the Romans after years of changing the date on the whim of the emperor of the time. January was eventually selected because the month was named after Janus, the mythical god of beginnings and guardian of entrances. Janus was said to have two faces – one in the front and one in the back in order to see the past and look forward to the future. Even after 153 B.C. the calendar would change somewhat until Julius Caesar finally established the Julian Calendar and declared Jan. 1 to be the official start of the year beginning in 46 B.C. to be synchronized with the sun. Interestingly enough, in order to make this change, 47 B.C. had to be 445 days long. New Year’s Resolutions... Continued on Page 2

RESOLUTION NUMBERS

• About 45 percent of Americans make resolutions regularly and 38 percent never make resolutions. • A mere 8 to 12 percent are successful in achieving their resolutions. • One in four fail every resolution they set. • Almost half experience some success with their resolutions…on occasion. • The youth in their 20’s tend to achieve their resolutions about 39 percent of the time whereas only about 15 percent of the over 50 crowd sticks with goal setting. • Men are most successful when they set goals in measurable and specific steps. • Women are more successful when they tell their friends and enlist support from others.

POPULAR RESOLUTIONS

Most resolutions involve doing something positive to improve our lives. Others involve not doing something to make life better, e.g. not smoking. Those of us who indulge in resolutions usually make more than one: • Over 45 percent of people make resolutions that relate to self-improvement, such as getting fit, quitting smoking, cutting down on stress and furthering their education. • Thirty-eight percent want to lose weight. • Almost equally, 34 percent make resolutions related to finances, i.e. paying off debts and/or saving money. • And improving relationships has a fairly strong showing of 31 percent. Other popular resolutions involve volunteering, getting organized and having a successful career.

KEEPING IT SIMPLE

Statistics also show that only about a quarter of us actually stick with our resolutions for more than a week or two. Most people get caught up in the New Year’s spirit, then lose their momentum after they return to the daily grind post-holidays. Resolutions involving major changes may fall by the wayside if they are too difficult and too far reaching to accomplish with ease. Keeping the resolution simple and breaking goals into baby steps might be the key to making progress toward improvement.

LOSING WEIGHT AND GETTING PHYSICALLY HEALTHIER

• Vow to lose a pound or two a month rather than declaring “I’m going to lose 50 pounds!” • Instead of drinking soda, drink water for one

Same goes for replacing other unhealthy foods with healthy foods. • Start walking the dog again. • Get a physical exam. • Make a list of healthy snacks and try to grab one of those everyday instead of the bag of chips.

GETTING FINANCIALLY HEALTHIER

• Start a log or journal of expenditures to see where the money goes. • Replace two of the weekly visits to your favorite coffee shop and make your own coffee at home. • Replace one lunch out per week with bringing lunch from home. • Pay cash - don’t put anything on a credit card. • Start saving or paying down debt with what you would have spent on the little things. • Request your credit report from all three agencies – this is free.

SELF-IMPROVEMENT

• Take a course for fun – photography, foreign language, pottery, cooking. • Take a course to learn a new skill for career enhancement – computer skills, writing. • Join a book club – good for establishing new relationships, too. • Keep a journal.

IMPROVING RELATIONSHIPS

• Schedule at least two meals per week with the whole family and without the TV or cell phones on. • Visit an elderly neighbor or family friend who you haven’t seen in awhile. • Take a friend out to lunch. • Invite your neighbors over for Sunday breakfast. • Call your mother. • Start a monthly movie night and invite friends or neighbors. • Write a letter to an old friend – not an e-mail but a real handwritten letter.

KEEPING A RESOLUTION

Not keeping a resolution is a source of guilt and makes one feel like a failure, so if you stray from the goal of the resolution, just get back to it. People who stick to their resolutions for a two-year period are said to have up to 14 slip-ups or setbacks.

NEIGHBORING RESOLUTIONS My resolution is to work smarter and be able to spend more time with my family. ost folks make at least of a couple of New Year’s resolutions. Here are some suggestions followed by the reality of everyday living: • “Let go of your guilt.” Are you kidding? You are guilty. If you had any sense of shame at all you would be totally depressed. • “Channel your imagination into everincreasing levels of creativity.” There are several good reasons for you to be consumed by suspicion and paranoia. • “Walk a mile in a man’s shoes before you criticize him.” That way when you do criticize him he’ll be a mile away and barefoot. • “Receive criticism with grace and dignity.” Unless it comes from a family member, a friend, an associate, or a stranger. • “Don’t talk about other people.” Let’s see, I guess that means the only person we can talk about is me! • “Never look back.” The trafﬁc in front of you might suddenly slow down and you’ll rear-end somebody. • “Be willing to share you’re experience and advice with those around you.” It’s so much fun being able to say later on, “I told you so.” • “Do something that will increase your heart rate and improve your muscle tone.” Take your computer out in the garage and beat it to death with a tire iron. • “Be willing to express yourself more

openly.” Check state and local laws first. • “If someone hurts you, forgive them immediately.” Meaningful and satisfying retaliation takes great thought and careful preparation. • “Assume full responsibility for your actions.” Except those caused by others. • “Be more intuitive.” It might make up for your lack of intelligence and sound judgment. • “Live each day with integrity.” If you do, does that mean you can live each night with corruption? • “Celebrate each holiday just like you did when you were a child.” Your credit cards are all charged up, your house payment is late, and your car needs brakes. Face it, you can’t afford to celebrate the way you would like to. • “Be brave in the face of danger.” On the other hand, cowardice is much easier and usually less painful. • “Change your diet to include mainly health foods.” Unless you are old. Then you need all the preservatives you can get. • “Relax more.” Unless you feel more comfortable tense. • “Become a better communicator.” Otherwise, just shut up. • “Get out there and try to change the world for the better.” But don’t you dare mess with the status quo. • “Lose twenty pounds.” Here’s how: Take a two-week trip to Mexico, drink the water and eat the food. • “Be sincere.” If you can’t, at least try to fake it. • “Be yourself.” Unless you’re an idiot. • “Get all of your temporal affairs in order.” After all, you may live another twenty years. FIBROCYSTIC BREASTS DON’T UP CANCER RISK

“Fibro” refers to strands of scar tissue. Cysts are fluid-filled sacs. With fibrocystic breast changes, both breasts are usually involved, something that rarely happens in cancer. The cysts are soft and feel like they’re made of rubber. They can be painful, especially in the days before a menstrual period. Cancers are solitary, hard masses that cannot be pushed around, like a cyst can.

f you’re like many people, you’ve made some New Year’s resolutions. Perhaps you’ve vowed to go the gym more often, or learn a new language or reconnect with long-lost friends. All these are worthy goals, of course, but at the same time, you don’t want to neglect one of the most important areas of your life — your finances. So this year, why not make some financial resolutions? Here are a few to consider: Stay calm. As you’re well aware, 2008 was not exactly a stellar year for the stock market. What will 2009 bring? No one can say for sure, but it seems likely that we are in for some volatility in the months ahead as we slog our way through the recession. As an investor, your best move is to stay calm and remain focused on your long-term goals. Review your financial strategy to make sure it’s still appropriate for your risk tolerance, family situation and time horizon. Increase your 401(k) contributions. Even though you might not have enjoyed looking at your 401(k) statements during 2008, it’s still a good idea to boost your contributions for 2009. Why? For one thing, you typically invest pre-tax dollars in your 401(k), so the more you put in, the lower your annual taxable income. And your earnings grow on a taxdeferred basis, which means your money can grow faster than it would if placed in an account on which you paid taxes every year. Furthermore, you can adjust your investment mix to reflect changes in your risk tolerance and your proximity to retire-

ment. Build an emergency fund. It’s a good idea to build an emergency fund containing six to 12 months’ worth of living expenses, held in a liquid account. If you face an unexpected expense — such as a major medical bill or a costly car repair — you don’t want to be forced into cashing out any stocks, especially if their price happens to be down. Diversify, diversify, diversify. In 2008, we witnessed something that’s unusual, though not unheard of: a bad year for stocks and bonds. In the past, it has more often been the case that when stocks are up, bonds are down, and vice versa. That’s why diversification makes so much sense: By spreading your dollars among an array of stocks, bonds, government securities, certificates of deposit and other investments, you can help reduce the impact of a downturn that primarily affects just one type of asset. Of course, diversification, by itself, cannot guarantee a profit or protect against a loss, but if you aren’t diversified at all, you are inviting significant risk into your investment portfolio. Stick with quality. During turbulent times, quality investments are your best bet for “weathering the storm.” If you’re buying stocks, look for those companies that have long track records of profitability, strong management teams, competitive products and solid business plans. If you’re considering bonds, find the ones that have received the highest ratings from the independent rating agencies. Finally, be patient, disciplined and forward-looking. The investment world has taken some knocks lately, but good investment opportunities are still out there. f you want to part ways with your spouse in Colorado, there is an alternative to a divorce – legal separation. A legal separation involves a court proceeding that is, for all practical purposes, identical to a divorce proceeding. The results of a proceeding for legal separation and a divorce proceeding are also very similar. The parties’ assets and debts are divided, and all child-related issues are resolved. The big distinction between a divorce and a legal separation is that the divorce decree allows you to enter into a new marriage. A decree of legal separation does not permit you to enter into a new marriage, because you are still married. Another distinction between a divorce and a legal separation involves the permanence of the decree of legal separation. As soon as 6 months after the decree of legal separation is granted, if either party wants to have the decree of legal separation automatically converted into a decree of divorce, all that party has to do is file a motion with the Court and the request to have the legal separation converted into a divorce will be automatically granted. The legal separation really only lasts as long as the parties want it to. Why would someone want a legal separation? Some folks find a legal separation psychologically appealing since it does not involve an absolute end to the marital

The main attraction of a legal separation, and the usual reason some people opt for the legal separation over a divorce, is that a legal separation may permit one spouse to retain spousal benefits from the other spouse such as health insurance coverage. However, it is important to keep in mind that health insurance coverage is a contractual relationship between the other spouse and that spouse’s benefit provider. A court cannot interfere with this contractual relationship due to the contract clause of the United States Constitution. You should not assume that you will be able to retain your spousal benefits if you get a legal separation. You should investigate whether the contract between your spouse and the benefit provider will permit you to retain your eligibility if you get a legal separation. Do not confuse legal separation with simple separation. Legal separation is just like a divorce except for the distinctions mentioned above. Simple separation means that you are no longer living together as man and wife. If you are married, simple separation does not create or extinguish legal obligations. If you are parting ways with your married spouse, the only way to avoid future financial or parental complications is to get a divorce or a legal separation. If you aren’t concerned about getting remarried, a legal separation will accomplish your goals, but it can be automatically converted into a divorce whether you want it to or not. Now you’re ready to cut out the damaged carpet area (deep stain, burn, or tear). Using the same can or container, press it down firmly over the damaged area, making a clear impression in the carpet. Then carefully cut along the outline with your utility knife.

3. Run a bead of carpet adhesive into the hole. 4. Use an awl to carefully guide each of the loops back into place. You’ll know where the loops begin and ends because there will be a little patch of the old adhesive along the length of the piece you’re working with where each loop was originally connected.

Next, identify the direction of the nap of the existing carpet and the replacement carpet. It is very important to match the direction of the nap in order for the patch to blend in. 5. Now you can insert the replacement piece of carpet. Apply extra pressure all around the edges of the new piece, working the fibers into the surrounding carpet. 6. If the fibers are slightly higher than those of the surrounding area; this is simply the difference between worn and unworn carpet. To even out the difference, simply lay a pair of scissors flat across the new section and carefully trim off just enough to blend the piece into the adjacent fibers. 7. Finally, it’s a good idea to set a heavy piece of furniture or stack of books, over the repaired section for a day or two to ensure that it is fully integrated.

Water Unsalted Butter Bread Flour Salt Eggs Egg Whites

1. Preheated oven to 300ºF. 2. Place water, butter and salt in a heavy sauce pan and bring to a boil. 3. Whip in all of the ﬂour in at once and stir. 4. Remove from heat and continue whipping. 5. Let cool. 6. Add eggs and egg whites while whipping until the mixture is smooth. 7. Grease a baking sheet.

8. To make cream puffs make small dollops about 1” apart. To make éclairs pipe out with a pastry bag long strips about 1” apart. 9. Place the pan on the bottom rack and increase the temperature to 450ºF for 10 minutes. 10. Reduce the temperature back down to 300ºF for an additional 10 minutes.

he cream puffs can also be used with a savory filling such as a salmon mousse or chicken salad, which will make a great appetizer. They can also be filled with whipped cream and topped with chocolate ganache (chocolate and whipping cream). Try adding a little of your favorite liquor to the whipped cream. Ice cream will also make a great filling. Then top it off with some chocolate sauce. For éclairs fill them with pastry cream.

New DVD Releases for Week of Jan. 5, 2009 PICK OF THE WEEK “Pineapple Express” -- I’m usually not a fan of stoner movies. I liked Cheech and Chong’s “Up in Smoke” and “Cheech and Chong’s Next Movie,” and more recently “Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle,” but that’s about it. I think the reason I don’t go for the stoner humor is because most stoner movies are

funny only to audiences who are already stoned. And let’s face it, it doesn’t take much to make a stoner laugh. A french fry can provide hours of hilarity. “Pineapple Express” is one of those rare pot pictures that is funny to audiences who aren’t ripped on the wacky tabacky. It stars Seth Rogan and James Franco as two lovable potheads who get mixed up in a mob war after Rogan’s character witnesses a murder of an Asian gangster by a mobster and a crooked cop (Gary Cole and Rosie Perez). The script is hilarious, the acting is better than you’d expect from a movie like this, and the action scenes are well-executed. Definitely worth a look. DOGS OF THE WEEK “Babylon A.D.” -- This is perhaps the worst science-fiction movie ever made

that doesn’t have Uwe Boll’s name attached to it. French director Mathieu Kassovitz’s dystopian tale of a genetically manipulated “messiah” is a convoluted, plodding mishmash of “Blade Runner” and “Children of Men.” This movie was hacked up so badly in the editing room by the studio that Kassovitz publicly denounced the ﬁlm. What was intended to be a commentary on organized religion and commerce and corruption became, instead, a bunch of action scenes strung together and no context. This isn’t even one of those movies that’s so bad it’s good. It’s just plain awful. “Righteous Kill” -- The big hoo-hah hype about this movie was that it was the Robert De Niro/Al Pacino movie that fans have been awaiting for some 30 years. Sadly, it should have been made 30 years

ago. After more than a decade of phoning it in, De Niro and Pacino look old, tired and bored -- just like the audiences who got suckered into seeing this stinker in the theaters. TV SERIES
