Bizarre and Unusual Holidays... continued from page 1
Jan. 30 – Inane Answering Message Day - A holiday designed to change or delete those awful answering machine recordings that everyone does not enjoy.
HOW DO THESE HOLIDAYS HAPPEN… OR WHO THOUGHT UP THIS STUFF? In order to designate a true “national” holiday, it literally takes an Act of Congress. First of all, anyone who wants to create a national day has to contact their local congressional leader and then create an actual proposal to get onto the congressional agenda, an amazing feat in itself. If your idea for a holiday doesn’t have to be national, then all you need to do is declare it is so. Most of these holidays are made up for one occasion, but some actually live a long life year after year. These are created mainly by card companies, special interest groups and other companies in order to promote their interests. And some have created holidays meant to be humorous, copyrighted them and wrote a book about them, mostly in the name of money, but at least entertaining. February is not only the home of President’s Day, Groundhog Day and Mardi Gras, but also National Bake for Family Fun Month, National Laugh-Friendly Month, National Mend a Broken Heart Month and Spunky Old Broads Month. Daily observances include: Feb. 1 – Hula in the Coola Day - This is a day for everyone who is sick of winter. It’s time to behave as if you live in Hawaii. Shed the thermal underwear, sweaters and parkas and host a luau complete with Mai Tai’s, grass skirts, leis. Why not roast a pig? Feb. 11 – Don’t Cry Over Spilled Milk Day - A day for all those pessimists who need a specific day to be optimistic. Feb. 16 – Do A Grouch a Favor Day - This is the day to find someone who is grouchy and do them a favor in hopes of putting a smile on their face. Feb. 20 – Northern Hemisphere Hoodie Hoo Day Folks in the northern hemisphere go outside at noon, wave their hands in the air and chant “hoodie hoo” in an effort to chase away winter and bring in spring. March is International Ideas Month, International Mirth Month and National Craft Month along with:

Mar. 3 – What If Cats and Dogs Had Opposable Thumbs Day - A holiday for people who have too much time on their hands (pun intended). Mar. 6 – Middle Name Pride Day - A holiday designed to simply flaunt our middle names. After all, our parents put a great deal of thought into it. Some people like their middle names more than their first. Think

(719) 481-1981 Dorothy F. Dunaway (Faye), Robert T. Turner (Ted) and John E. Hoover (J. Edgar). Mar. 14 – Pi Day - Mathematicians the world over celebrate this day and Pi, the symbol for the ratio of a circumference of a circle to its diameter. Remember, Pi=3.14159265…to infinity. Mar. 22 – International Goof-off Day - No explanation necessary. The Snippetz staff is really looking forward to this one. April kicks off with April Fools Day and goes on to celebrate National Knuckles Down Month, Straw Hat Month, Fresh Florida Tomatoes Month and Egg Salad Week. April 7 – No Housework Day (a personal favorite) April 11 – International “Louie Louie” day - A day to honor the party song “Louie Louie” and Richard Barry, its composer. The holiday was designated by the Louie Louie Advocacy and Music Appreciation Society. Washington State and Seattle have also named its own Louie Louie Day on April 12 and April 14 respectively. Although Washington refused to declare “Louie Louie” its state song, it agreed to designate a day to honor the famous tune. April 17 – Blah-Blah-Blah Day - This is a day set aside to do all the boring tasks on your to-do list. April 26 – Hug an Australian Day - And why not? It’s all in the name of fostering friendly international relations. May is not just for moms and Memorial Day. It’s also National Salad Month, National Vinegar Month (goes with the salad, of course), and is the home of Bread Pudding Recipe Exchange Week (are you listening Pat?), Work at Home Moms Week and National Hug Holiday Week. And you won’t want to miss: May 3 – Lumpy Rug Day - day set aside to get rid of an old lumpy rug and replace it with a nice, smooth rug. May 8 – No Socks Day (don’t forget to wash your feet) May 13 – Root Canal Appreciation Day - Proclaimed Dr. Chris Kammer, a dentist from Madison, Wisc., anyone who has suffered from an abscessed tooth can truly appreciate this holiday. Dr. Kammer kicked off the holiday by performing the procedure outdoors at Bizarre and Unusual Holidays... continued on page 3

the local baseball stadium. May 25 – Nerd/Geek Pride Day - Originating in Spain, this day was selected because it is the anniversary of the premier of the first “Star Wars” movie in 1977. The holiday first appeared in the U.S. in 2008. June is the month of graduations and also National Accordion Month and National Steakhouse Month. June is also the proud owner of International Clothesline Week and National Old-time Fiddler’s Week. June 2 – Leave the Office Early Day (another Snippetz staff favorite) June 18 –Splurge Day - his is a day that anyone on a diet or a budget can look forward to. It’s the official day to eat that banana split or buy a sports car. June 20 – National Hollerin’ Contest Day - Since 1969 folks have flocked by the thousands to Spivey’s Corner in North Carolina, population about 49, for this event. It is what it is – a lot of yelling. June 22 – Stupid Guy Thing Day - A day to celebrate stupid things that guys do. For some reason, we could not find any evidence of a Stupid Gal Thing Day. July - Independence Day doesn’t get all the glory. There’s also: July 15 – Saint Swithins Day - If it rains on July 15, then the day will be followed by 40 days and nights of rain; if it is dry on July 15, the next 40 will also be dry. Swithins was a bishop from England who died in 862 and was buried outdoors in humble surroundings, as he wished, where he could be rained upon. On July 15, 971, his remains were moved to an indoor cathedral. Severe and violent storms pounded the town that day and for the remaining 40 days. Legend has it that Swithins sent the storms in protest of his being moved.
August is National Panini Month and is the home of Hobo Week and Waffle Week, as well as:
November is not only the month for veterans and Thanksgiving Day, but also National Peanut Butter Lovers Month, not to mention:
Aug. 22 – Southern Hemisphere Hoodie Hoo Day Just like the northern folks who celebrate Feb. 20.
Nov. 4 – National Chicken Lady Day - It’s not what you think. This day has nothing to do with chicken. Rather, it is a day to honor Dr. Marthenia “Tina” Dupree who trains people all over the world for public speaking. She once worked as a Director of Community Relations/Spokesperson and Training for a major chicken franchise where she earned her nickname, “The Chicken Lady.”
Aug. 28 – Race Your Mouse Around the Icons Day (makes you wonder, doesn’t it?)
Nov. 19 – World Toilet Day - This is one deserving holiday - where would we be without the toilet?
Oct. 9 – Moldy Cheese Day - This is for all you cheese lovers who cut the mold from around the edges of the cheese and eat the middle. Oct. 14 – Be Bald and Be Free Day (beware – you may be arrested for telling bald jokes today.) Oct .17 – Wear Something Gaudy Day

HOW TO WIGGLE OUT OF THE MUD
By Dr. Ron Ross
PREPARE FOR THE BOOM:
WAKEN YOUR WORK ETHIC
Y
our parents probably told you that if you worked hard and got good grades that you could get accepted into a good college where if you worked hard and got good grades you could graduate and get a good job where if you worked hard and stayed loyal for 25 or 30 years you could retire with a good pension and finally live the good life. Or they might have told you that you could invent things or launch a business or fulfill your dreams if you dedicated yourself and worked really hard. They probably quoted Thomas Edison who said, “Work is one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspiration.” It was sooooo inspiring, right? The sermon they were preaching is titled “The Protestant Work Ethic,” called that not because Catholics or Jews didn’t believe in work, but because of the high view of work and achievement promulgated by many of the church Reformers in the pre-industrial age. With the onset of the industrial revolution and the rise of capitalism the Protestant work ethic became an integral part of the American culture. The ethic is that work is good for you and your duty to God is fulfilled by diligence, hard work, and restrained expenditure bringing about the accumulation of goods that become a sign of God’s blessing and an indicator of eventual salvation. The principle that work is good for you remains, but the definition of work has changed. We’re no longer in the industrial age; we’re in the information age. “Hard work” was once described with words like “sweat,” “toil,” and “labor.” What words do

we use to describe it today? Today I can work for eight hours and never sweat once, at least because of physical labor. I don’t do physical labor. If I want to do physical labor I have to go to the gym. However, nearly every day I work eight or ten hours straight through sitting in my ergonomic office chair in an environmentally comfortable workplace using nothing more than my fingers on a keyboard a hand on a mouse and a telephone in my ear. When the day is done I am completely worn out both physically and mentally yet I’ve never left my chair. My back aches, my wrists feel pain shooting back and forth, my eyes are sore, I have a dull pain right at the top of my neck, and worst of all I am often unsure of what specifically I have accomplished. My late father told my brother and me a thousand times about how back in the mid-1930’s, “I had to overhaul John Deere tractors in the middle of winter in my father’s unheated dirt-floor shop…that was real work!” My question is, what passes for hard work today? How about this: sustained focus. That’s what’s hard, sustained focus. With all the interruptions we must deal with it takes an incredible amount of hard work to sustain our focus for more than five or ten minutes. We keep getting interrupted by the telephone, or a text message, or an instant message “pop-up” on our computer screen or cell phone, or some kind of “you’ve got mail” ding that comes from our e-mail program, or someone sticks their head into our workspace to discuss the latest office gossip. I dare you to try going just two hours without an interruption. Close your office door, turn off your e-mail ding, refuse to take any phone calls, shut down your cell phone, and work. The work will be easy. Shutting down all the fancy communication tools will be hard. But if you do…you’ll get more done in those two hours than you would in eight hours with endless interruptions. Want to be one of the few people ready for the boom when it finally comes? Waken your work ethic - develop the habit of sustained focus and you’ll be way ahead of the frazzled crowd of pseudo-busy multitasking stressed out workaholics who prefer activity over accomplishment.

• Although they’re not as much in fashion these days as they have been in the past, you certainly know what sideburns are -- but you may not know where the term came from. It seems that Ambrose Everett Burnside was a rather indifferent general for the Union Army during the Civil War, suffering a disastrous defeat at the Battle of Fredericksburg. Despite his lack of military genius, however, he was rather notorious -- for the enormous bushy facial hair he wore. Eventually his last name, slightly morphed, became the generic word for such a pattern of facial hair.
• Those who study such things say that on average, Americans over the age of 60 catch less than one cold per year. • The first woman to be featured on the cover of BusinessWeek magazine was Brownie Wise, the creator of the Tupperware party. This was back in 1954. • If you’ve never seen an example of Leptotyphlops carlae, don’t be surprised -- the species of threadsnake seems to be found only on the Caribbean island of Barbados. The animal’s claim to fame is that it is the world’s smallest snake, measuring only 4 inches long when fully grown and achieving a girth about that of a spaghetti noodle. • Consumers in India purchase more gold than those of any other country in the world.

SENIOR NEWS LINE by Matilda Charles
BRAIN POWER S
eniors process negative emotions differently from younger people. So says a study from Duke University Medical Center, appearing in the January issue of Psychology Science. The study included adults with average ages of 24 and 70. Participants were shown photographs that they rated on a “pleasantness” scale while hooked up to an MRI. Some of the photos were decidedly NOT pleasant: violent acts and mutilated bodies. Then each participant had to remember those pictures after the MRI was over to determine whether or not the images that caused negative emotion could actually be recalled. It turns out that seniors didn’t “connect” as much to the photos that caused negative emotion, while the younger participants registered high in that area, remembering

Exercise isn’t hard. Even if we’re cleaning house and dancing through the rooms as we do, we’re being active. It’s a bonus if we take a fitness class or do daily walking. Challenging the brain can actually be fun, if we’re doing the daily crossword puzzle and attending interesting lectures or films. Staying socially active can be as easy as developing a network of friends and acquaintances whom we see or talk to on a regular basis.

10 STEPS TO A PERFECT ROOM STEP 4:
LIGHTING - PART 1
W
e’ve come to number four on our list and our number four is one of the most important things in a room. It’s lighting because lighting can change everything. Lighting can add instant drama. We can make ourselves look even better with proper lighting. It can take a small room and make it look larger. Lighting has become more than just functional. It has changed to really become art in the room. Let’s talk about some of the theories of lighting. There are three different types of lighting for any room. First is called general illumination or ambient lighting. It could be a table lamp, chandelier, recessed lighting or track lighting. General illumination can be the big lamp on an end table, but it is also the light that you need to see to perform any function in a room. Not to be confusing, but it’s also that big light in the middle of the bedroom. The second type of lighting is called task lighting. Task lighting is a specific light for a specific purpose. Think about the light over your stove and how many times you turn on that light. That’s a task light. Think about the light over your kitchen sink and when you want to cut or want to chop. You need better light there. That is a task light. A reading light is also a task light because it’s a specific light for a specific purpose.

Now, our third form of lighting is more fun. It’s accent lighting. Accent lights can be anything or everything from the lights in your cabinets, wall sconces, wall washers or any lamps with less than 60 watts of light. There are a lot of places we can tuck these little accent lights in a bookcase, for example. So many times, bookcases tend to be dark. I love to mix in a little lamp, whether it is a strip lighting that gets mounted on the shelf above it or a small, little decorative light that you just drill a hole in the back of your cabinet to run your switch out and plug it in. It can change that bookcase and really bring it into much more of a focal point in your room.

Accent lights are also the little lights in your kitchen. I have in my kitchen three little tiny lamps that sit on my counter between my counter and my top cabinet. Now, when I’m planning dinner or when I’m preparing dinner, those lights can be on. It pools the counter top nicely with a little bit of ambient lighting. I think of them especially after I’ve done the dishes and turned off those big lights. I turn on these lights and it can actually create a beautiful, intimate atmosphere in your kitchen. I can’t tell you how many times my husband and I have danced in that kitchen after doing dishes with just these little accent lights on. It’s actually quite sexy, if I could say a kitchen light can be sexy.

lease take a moment to meet Pabst. He is about 4 or 5 years old. Right now he’s living in a home with two other cats. According to his owner, about once a month Pabst seems to rebel about sharing the litter box with two other cats. He has had an accident on the bed. He does not have a urinary tract infection per his Vet. The Vet thinks that he may just need to be in a home where he is the only cat and his space is not threatened. Pabst owners really want him to be happy so they are willing to give him up to a good home where he’ll receive lots of love and attention. He is a very, very lovable and snuggley cat. He is quite big and he is de-clawed on all four paws. Pabst is strictly an indoor cat.

DOES YOUR BODY MAKE MISTAKES?
E
ver forget the name of someone when making an introduction? Ever say one thing, but mean another? These are functions of our conscious mind. Dozens of self-help books reveal how to improve our memory, increase our vocabulary or sharpen our mental acuity. But what you won’t find at your favorite bookstore is a book filled with tips about how to improve your heart’s response to adrenaline or how to enhance your lung’s ability to oxygenate blood! Why? Because these are just two examples of millions of functions your body controls and regulates without a conscious thought from you. So, how does this relate to a headache? Or low back pain? Or the reduced ability to fully turn your head to check traffic before changing lanes? It turns out, lots. Your body is programmed to survive.

PAD, also goes by the name peripheral vascular disease. It is a common condition in older people, but not every senior citizen has it. Close to 15 percent of those over 70 do.
PERIPHERAL ARTERY DISEASE COMMON IN OLDER AGES
Allergy and Asthma Care
Virtually every sign or symptom that we traditionally think of as illness or disease is merely your body’s best attempt at survival. No errors. Zero mistakes. When your body feels threatened, it responds in a variety of ways to get your attention. To encourage you to change. To teach a lesson. To signal that its capacity to accommodate or adapt has been exhausted.
Here “peripheral” refers to the legs. “Artery disease” is artery clogging, the same process that goes on in heart arteries and culminates in a heart attack. High blood cholesterol, blood fats, blood protein and platelets aggregate on an artery wall, and as the buildup grows, it blocks circulation to the tissues fed by that artery. Blood doesn’t reach leg muscles in a sufficient amount to support those muscles when they’re active. The common sign of PAD is calf pain while walking. The pain leaves when the person stops walking. Many people with PAD can tell, almost to the inch, when the pain will begin. The pain indicates leg muscles aren’t getting enough blood. A simple office test to detect PAD is to compare blood pressure taken at the ankles with blood pressure taken in the arms. The two readings should
Including Allergy Injections At the Medical Center next to Safeway
be close. With PAD, the ankle blood pressure is lower than arm pressure due to the obstruction to blood flow. Management of PAD is similar to management of clogged heart arteries. Blood cholesterol has to be lowered, blood pressure normalized and blood sugar controlled. Weight reduction, if indicated, is important, as is daily exercise, -- even though pain occurs during walking -- has to become routine. Cigarette smoking, of course, is out of the question. If the doctor does confirm a diagnosis of PAD, prescription medicines help blood get around artery blockages. Aspirin, Plavix and Pletal are examples of such medicines. When the obstruction is sizable, then leg arteries can undergo the same kinds of treatments as heart arteries -- bypass surgery or stents. The booklet on peripheral artery disease discusses this topic in detail and its treatment. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 109W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: How soon after taking medicine is it OK to drink alcohol? I say an hour is enough time. My wife thinks it should be four hours. Who is right? -- B.N. ANSWER: First you should make sure your medicine is compatible with alcohol. Some medicines aren’t. In that case, you shouldn’t drink alcohol at all while taking the medicine. It takes the stomach about four hours to empty its contents. Medication, however, doesn’t stay in the stomach for that long. If your medicine is compatible with alcohol use, the answer is a compromise: You should be safe if you wait about two hours after taking it. *** Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. any families are having to make tough decisions now. First to be paid out of the budget are necessities like food, utilities, mortgage and car payment. Sometimes health insurance goes away because families can’t afford it. Sometimes the insurance goes away because of a job loss. In either case, you might have options to find affordable insurance. If you’ve just left an employer that provided health insurance, ask about signing up for COBRA, which is a continuation of the group health insurance through your employer. Generally you can be eligible for up to 18 months of coverage, unless there is a qualifying event that can stretch the time to 36 months. COBRA is more expensive than your regular insurance was (especially if your employer picked up part of the cost), but it’s much less expensive than paying for the medical expenses you might incur. For more information on COBRA, check the U.S. Department of Labor site (www.dol. gov). If you have an ongoing need for prescription drugs, contact the drug manufacturer about discounted or free prescriptions.

overweight (mainly due to illnesses caused by excess weight). The survey discovered three main attitudes of non-exercisers. One group recognized the benefits of exercise, but didn’t feel guilty about being sedentary. This group wished there was a “magic pill” that would give them the benefits without the effort. Another group also recognized the benefits, but just cannot stay motivated enough to commit to routine exercise. This group feels guilty when they aren’t active. The third group feels regular exercise is unnecessary for their health. If you fall in one of these groups, try to take steps to change your attitude. Take time to go through past weekly exercise tips if you want to become familiar with its many benefits in addition to weight control. Changing your attitude towards exercise so that you incorporate it in your lifestyle can positively and significantly impact your weight loss efforts!
Call your state’s department of insurance. Ask what others in the same situation are doing. Visit your local insurance agents and see what they have to offer for individual policies. They’ll know up-to-theminute information on policies that are available. Keep in mind that the agent is going to get a commission on whatever policies you buy. Check online for ratings of the companies he or she recommends. Go to www.insurance. freeadvice.com for reviews, and A.M. Best (www.ambest.com) for ratings information. Once you get a policy, read every word. Check eHealth Insurance (ehealthinsurance.com) for quotes and information. If you’re paying for COBRA, check into COBRA alternatives on this site. Unfortunately, they don’t have information for all states, but for the ones that are covered, an A.M. Best rating is shown. Look to your alliances. If you’re a member of a group such as AARP or a fraternity, or if you’re a college graduate, check for group policies based on your membership. If you’re self-employed, check tradespecific organizations that pertain to your field, or Small Business Service Bureau (www.sbsb.com) and membership benefits in the National Association for the Self-Employed (www.nase. org). Call the Chamber of Commerce in your area. Sometimes it will have group plans for local small businesses. uring your working years, you put money away, hoping that it will grow enough to help provide you with a comfortable retirement. But once you retire, haven’t you reached your goal? You don’t still need to invest for growth, do you? Actually, you do. You may be retiring, but the cost of living marches on. In fact, even with a relatively mild inflation rate of three percent, you’ll pay about twice as much for goods and services in 25 years as you do today. And since you could easily spend two or three decades in retirement, you need to be prepared for these costs. At first glance, you might think that this situation presents you with a daunting challenge. Historically, stocks are the only financial assets that have significantly outperformed inflation. Yet, as a retiree, you may be nervous about investing in equities, especially given the stock market’s performance last year. How can you stay ahead of inflation without taking on too much risk? Unquestionably, you’ll have to manage your investment portfolio very carefully during your retirement years. But it’s important to realize that you do have options. Here are a few suggestions: Consider dividend-paying stocks. By doing some research, you can find stocks that have paid — and even increased — dividends for many consecutive years. Obviously, a source of rising income can help you in your battle against inflation — and many dividend-paying stocks also offer the potential for long-term growth. Keep in mind, though, that a company can decrease or eliminate its stock dividend at any time.
al strategy. During your retirement, you will probably need to take withdrawals from all your resources — your taxable brokerage and savings accounts; your tax-deferred accounts, such as your Traditional IRA and your 401(k); and your tax-free accounts, such as your Roth IRA. (A Roth IRA’s earnings grow tax-free if you’ve had your account for at least five years and don’t start taking withdrawals until you’re 59-1/2). Obviously, the longer you can preserve your tax-advantaged growth potential, the better off you’ll be when it comes to staying ahead of inflation. Consequently, you may want to take withdrawals from your taxable account first, tap into your Traditional IRA and your 401(k) next and save the Roth IRA for last. (If you’re 701/2 or older, however, you need to take required minimum distributions from your Traditional IRA and your 401(k).) That said, this is just a rule of thumb, as your actual strategy may change from year to year, depending on your expected tax burden. Think about some TIPS. Most types of Treasury bills or bonds pay a fixed rate of return, which makes them susceptible to inflation. However, you can also invest in Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities, or TIPS. The principal of a TIPS increases with inflation and decreases with deflation, as measured by the Consumer Price Index. When your TIPS mature, you are paid the adjusted principal or original principal, whichever is greater. Be aware, though, that you’ll be taxed on the annual inflation adjustments, even though you won’t receive this money until your bond is redeemed. Consult with your tax advisor to determine if you should put your TIPS in a tax-deferred account, such as a Traditional IRA. You’ll have to cope with inflation throughout your retirement years. But by making the right moves, at the right time, you can greatly boost your chances of enjoying the lifestyle you’ve envisioned. THE LAW ACCORDING TO STEVENS by Lisa Welch Stevens, Attorney at Law P.C.
THE TROUBLE WITH ANGELS: THE COMPLICATIONS OF OUTSIDE INVESTORS © January 14, 2009, Lisa Welch Stevens, Esq.,
W
hether you have always dreamed of owning your own business, or you turn to that dream because of a layoff from employment in corporate America, one of the biggest obstacles you might face is rounding up enough money to launch your venture. In the event that you or your spouse does not have sufficient, accessible, liquid monies to put into the venture, you may decide to seek out “Angels”. “Angels” are outsiders (although they may be friends or family members) who invest in a business, often in exchange for an ownership interest in a business. And such Angels can be a God-send to a budding entrepreneur. They can also be a source of many complications. This article shall focus on one such complication: the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and/or state blue sky laws. Many small business people would no doubt be surprised to learn that, even when ownership interests in their businesses, regardless of the type of entity chosen, are not publicly traded securities, such interests may still be subject to regulation by the SEC and, depending upon the state in which the business is domiciled, state blue sky laws. Anytime ownership interests in a business are offered to third parties as part of a solicitation for an investment, even where such interests are not offered to the general public but only to select, identified third parties, such “private placements” still are subject to certain requirements under Regulation D of the Securities Act of 1933. Under Regulation D, private businesses are permitted to solicit in-

CALL MICHAEL 719-338-7028 vestments from third parties in exchange for ownership interests, without the requirements placed upon publicly-traded stocks, but only in certain limited cases, and subject to certain requirements. These limited cases include: (1) offerings of less than $1,000,000 in a 12 month period; (2) offerings of less than $5,000,000 in a 12 month period to an unlimited number of “accredited investors” (must meet definitional requirements) plus 35 additional persons; or (3) offerings of any amount to an unlimited number of “accredited investors” plus up to 35 “sophisticated persons” (must meet definitional requirements). Even where an offering by a business fits within those limited types of offerings, the business must still observe certain formalities and execute, both with and without the outside investors, certain documents in order to fall within the exemptions of Regulation D. Those formalities include making, in a timely manner a Regulation D filing with the SEC and, in certain states, a comparable filing with state authorities. These formalities and documents are subject to highly complex and technical requirements, so much so that most attorneys elect not to practice in this area of law. There are very few, if any, non-attorneys or non-accountants who would be able to successfully navigate the requirements of the SEC in soliciting Angel investors. This is one of the relatively few cases in which “do-it-yourself”, with or without the Internet, is not worth the savings in legal or accounting fees. So beware - if you choose to seek outside investors for your venture: “where angels go, trouble follows” (if you are not careful!) SNIPPETZ REAL ESTATE AND DINING GUIDE for individual fixtures, you’ll have to go to the main shutoff and turn off the entire water supply to your home. Double check that you’ve turned the water source off by turning on the faucet.

EASY HOME REPAIRS! DO-IT-YOURSELF HOME MAINTENANCE Simple maintenance repairs will: …save you money in the long run, …bring a higher price for your home when you are ready to sell, …show your pride of ownership.
HOW TO FIX A LEAKY FAUCET There are many types of faucets on the market today. Even though they may look different, they all have the same basic parts and are put together in the same basic fashion. No matter what a compression-type faucet looks like, whether it has separate handles for hot and cold water or just one that operates both hot and cold, it operates according to certain basic principles. CAUSES: • Loose Nuts If water is leaking around the packing nut area or at the base of the handle, your connection is probably just loose. Use an adjustable wrench and tighten the nut located just below the handle. (Note: In some bathroom faucets, the nut may be located inside a designer handle. Pull the handle off to reveal the faucet’s hardware.) • Bad Washers The majority of all faucet leaks are caused by washers which are worn, improperly installed or are the wrong size. Signs of poor washers include water which drips or runs out of the handles, slow leaks coming from the faucet, and water which collects or pools around the back of the handle area of the faucet. If you’re working with a stem faucet, you can determine which unit is leaking by shutting off the water supply in stages. Begin by turning off the hot water to check for leaks. If the dripping has stopped, it is the hot water valve unit washer you’ll need to replace. • • • •
TOOLS YOU’LL NEED: Washers of several different sizes. An adjustable wrench. Screwdriver. Penetrating Oil
STEP 1 Turn off the main water supply to the sink you’re working on. You’ll find the shut-off valve close to the faucet you’re repairing. It’s usually located under the sink basin or inside a floor cabinet. You should be able to turn off the supply at a nearby shutoff, but if your house is not equipped with shutoffs
STEP 2 Turning counter-clockwise, loosen the packing nut. The packing nut is located just below or inside the individual faucet handles. Some screws are hidden by metal or plastic button or disc that snaps out or is threaded. Once you get button out, you’ll see top-mounted handle screw. If necessary, use penetrating oil, such as WD-40, to help loosen it. Using the faucet handle, pull out the entire valve unit by twisting and turning it until it pulls free. Remove handle, and look at faucet assembly. Remove packing nut with large pair of slip-joint pliers or adjustable wrench, being careful not to scar metal. Twist out stem or spindle by turning it in the same direction you would to turn on faucet. STEP 3 Remove screw that holds the washer. Use penetrating oil, if necessary, to loosen screw. Examine screw and stem, replacing if damaged. Holding the valve unit in your hand, locate the old washer. (It will most likely be at the bottom of the valve unit itself.) Remove the screw that is holding the old washer in place. STEP 4 Using the old washer as your size guide, replace old washer with an exact replacement. Washers that almost fit will almost stop the drip. Also note whether old washer is beveled or flat, and replace it with one that is identical. Washers designed only for cold water expand greatly when they get hot, thereby closing the opening and slowing the flow of hot water. Some washers will work for either, but you should make sure the ones you buy are exact replacements. Now replace the screw.

STEP 5 Fasten new washer to the stem, and place the valve unit back into the faucet, turning the handle to its proper position before tightening. Turn stem clockwise. With stem in place, put packing nut back on. Be careful not to scar metal with wrench. STEP 6 Replace button or disc. Tighten the packing nut and turn the water back on. Test for leaks. Note: If your faucet continues to leak and you’re fairly certain the washer is to blame, try replacing your old washer with one of a different size. TIPS • Wrap the jaws of your pliers or wrench with masking or duct tape to prevent marring and damaging your faucet. • Close the drain before attempting any faucet repair to prevent parts from slipping down into the drain. • Pay attention to the order in which you’re removing parts so that you know how to reassemble them when you’re finished. • Lube threads with plumber’s grease to increase the seal. • Washers located on hot controlling temperature handles wear out twice as fast as those which control cold water. his dish is meant to be made with veal but I like chicken better. If you were to use veal you would use veal stock in place of the chicken stock. The full name of this dish is Saltimbocca alla romana which when translated is “jump into the mouth”. This dish comes from the Latium region of Italy. In this region, the people prefer simple dishes with lots of flavor. This dish hits those criteria.

R
emoving the cork from sparkling wine with just a gentle sigh rather than a loud pop is fairly easy. Simply hold the bottle at a 45degree angle with a towel wrapped around it if it’s wet. (Try positioning the base of the bottle on your hipbone.) Twist the bottle while holding on to the cork so that you can control the cork as it emerges. When you feel the cork starting to come out of the bottle, push down against the cork with some pressure as if you don’t want to let it out of the bottle. In this way, the cork will emerge slowly with a hissing or sighing sound rather than a pop.

New DVD Releases for Week of Jan. 19, 2009 PICK OF THE WEEK “Chris Rock: Kill The Messenger” (3-Disc Collector’s Edition) -- I have a pretty extensive library of comedy albums, and one of my favorites is a rare double album by Bill Cosby from 1969 entitled “8:15 12:15.” The first disc is of his all-ages, family-oriented 8:15 show. The second is the adult-oriented
midnight show. What’s great about this album is that the show is essentially the same, but you get to witness a master comedian gear his material to a specific audience. That’s why I’m looking forward to getting this latest Chris Rock boxed set. His HBO special “Kill The Messenger” was recorded in South Africa, London and New York City. The three concerts are spliced together with Chris beginning a joke in, say, New York and delivering the punchline in South Africa. Some folks found this approach jarring, but I thought they pulled it off beautifully. This boxed set contains not only the original broadcast, but the full, uncut shows from each venue, so you can witness how Rock plays to each audience on all three continents. For fans of stand-up, this is a must-have for your collection.
DOGS OF THE WEEK “Max Payne” -- Oh look! Another movie based on an old video game! Hey, it’s starring that Marky Mark guy, an actor with all the emotional range of scrapple! Guns go boom! Marky Mark scowls! Crooked cops. Funky drugs! Mila Kunis tries to look sexy and dangerous -- like a Pomeranian wielding a spork! Plot? We don’t need no steenkin’ PLOT! Just quick cuts, loud music, bang-bang! Gahhhhhhh!
“Repo! The Genetic Opera” -- Darren Lynn Bousman directed many of the sequels to “Saw,” a movie franchise about torture. With “Repo!” Bousman has turned the tables and made a movie that will torture audiences. “Repo!” is a sad and obvious attempt to

manufacture a cult film. It tries too hard to be the next “Rocky Horror Picture Show,” and instead is so self-consciously camp that it becomes sad and annoying at the same time. It also has Paris Hilton. Need I say more? GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You continue on a high-enthusiasm cycle as that new project you’ve assumed takes shape. You’re also buoyed by the anticipation of receiving some good news about a personal matter. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Your eagerness to immerse yourself in your new assignment is understandable.
