A

ghostwriter is someone who writes material such as books, articles and speeches for another individual who authorizes the writing. It is a common occurrence nowadays for ghostwriters to be hired to pen speeches and autobiographies for politicians, Hollywood stars and business executives, as well as ebooks and internet blogs. But ghostwriting has been around for a long time and is now a fruitful and somewhat respectable business, although some may argue that point. No one keeps statistics on how many books are written by ghostwriters, but some experts believe that nearly 50 percent of nonfiction books may be ghostwritten and up to 40 percent of fiction.

A GHOSTLY PAST It may have started as far back as the third millennium BC in Mesopotamia where characters were written in moist clay. Kings and other elite would dictate important issues of the time to scribes who would make imprints into the clay as well as make additional copies as necessary. No computers for this job. Later it was parchment in Egypt and wax tablets in Rome, only a slight improvement over clay.

The very first novel may very well have been “Tale of the Genji” written by a Japanese noblewoman, Murasaki Shikibu in early 11th century. At over 4,000 pages and 50 chapters, the masterpiece is rumored to have had a ghostwriter for part of the book. Apparently, beyond chapter 33, the book seems to be written in a different style. Some believe that it was Shikibu’s daughter, Daini no Sanmi who completed the book for her. Although the writing style was different, the work was true to Shikibu’s ideas.

WHO WROTE IT? Ghostwriters tend to be one of those best kept secrets, which is part of the benefits for hiring a ghostwriter. However, many ghostwriters are given credit or a byline, as in being noted as a co-author or “as told by.” For the most part, the writing is the spirit and story of the author. The job of the ghostwriter is to spend considerable time interviewing and working with the author in order to put their story into words. There have been some notable books, however, where the ‘author’ has clearly not read all of the book they have written. Take “Ronald Reagan: An American Life,” ghosted by Robert Lindsey. The former president once said, “I hear it’s a terrific book!

One of these days I’m going to read it myself.” Basketball star Charles Barkley accused his ghostwriter of misquoting him. Apparently Barkley didn’t read his autobiography either.

SOME FAMOUS AUTOBIOGRAPHIES AND NONFICTION WORKS • Robert Lindsey, Ronald Reagan’s ghostwriter, also wrote “Brando: Songs My Mother Taught Me,” actor Marlon Brando’s autobiography.

• Errol Flynn’s autobiography, “My Wicked, Wicked Ways,” was ghosted by Earl Conrad. Conrad was a well-known author on his own as well as in collaboration with others. He wrote “Jim Crow America” along with nearly 20 other books.

• Rush Lumbaugh’s book, “The Way Things Ought to Be” was written in collaboration with John Fund.

• Fay Faurote ghosted Henry Ford’s “My Philosophy of Industry” in 1929.

• Supermodel Naomi Campbell hired ghostwriter Caroline Upcher for her 1994 autobiography “Swan.”

Campbell was reportedly somewhat unfamiliar with some of the text in her autobiography.

• Ivana Trump reportedly paid big money ($350,000) to Camille Marchetta for writing “For Love Alone.”

• American Idol star Clay Aiken has already jumped on the bandwagon with an autobiography penned by Allison Glock titled “Learning to Sing.”

• Barbara Feinman Todd, the associate dean of journalism at Georgetown University, ghosted Hillary Clinton’s “It Takes a Village and Other Lessons Children Teach Us.” Feinman’s contribution was never credited within the book, causing quite a bit of controversy. Barbara Feinman Todd assisted in other notable works such as Bob Woodward’s “VEIL,” former Congresswoman Marjorie Margolies-Mezvinsky’s “A Woman’s Place,” and Palestinian Hanan Ashrawi’s “This Side of Peace,” to name a few.

Andrews died in 1986, but the story lived on. Robert Ludlum wrote 25 thriller novels up until his death in 2001.

There are probably as many theories about the actual authorship of William Shakespeare’s work as there are works by Shakespeare. Conspiracy theories have been abound since the 1700’s. Many arguments attest to the idea that Shakespeare could not have written his plays; arguments such as he was not educated enough and he was of such low social standing that it would be nearly impossible for him to know as much about faraway places as he wrote about. Others have been strongly suggested as the correct authors of Shakespeare’s work such as Queen Elizabeth I, Walter Raleigh and William Stanley, Earl of Derby.

• If ghostwriting sounds like an interesting career, U.S. News and World Report named it as one of the best career options for 2009.

• Edward de Vere, Earl of Oxford and nobleman of Queen Elizabeth I’s court, was a well traveled and highly educated man. It is rumored that he may be the real author of Shakespeare’s work because there are similarities and parallels between the writing and de Vere’s life experiences. PBS also aired a story about Edward de Vere on “Frontlineâ€? in 1996. • One of the more popular theories is that Francis Bacon, writer and philosopher had the most potential to author Shakespeare’s plays. The theory suggests that Bacon not only had the educational background, but he also wrote extensively about hidden ciphers and codes in written works.

Some ‘Baconians’ have spent decades attempting to crack the code in Shakespeare’s work to prove the theory, but none have ever been proven to the satisfaction of the scientiďŹ c community.

You can search (for free) for grades on a given hospital for any of dozens of medical conditions. Look for Research Hospitals on the front screen of the Web site.

ne of the other trends that we’ve noticed in the last year coming back is painting one wall in a different color, called an accent color. So, how many walls should you do? If you have two colors you want to use in a room, maybe a really beautiful golden taupe and a beautiful shimmering aqua color - o you do two walls taupe, two walls aqua? No. The answer is you do just one wall in a different color, and that wall, if it is a darker color, it could be at the end of a long room to square up that room a little bit. It could be added just to add some visual interest in a room, but you could do it for many different reasons. Maybe the wall isn’t in great a shape or there’s something on that wall you don’t like. Maybe it’s broken up by a lot of doorways and entryways and things like that. You can contrast, but do it on just one wall.

Another thing about our rooms that we use a lot of is chair rail. A chair rail can be mounted anywhere from 28 to 34 inches up from the floor. What it basically is doing is dividing that wall into one-third and two-thirds. If you’re painting and you want to use two different color paints, think about using the darker paint below your chair rail to anchor it, and maybe the lighter color up above.

When you talk about the psychology of adding color to your walls, you can take lighter colors and make a smaller room look larger, but that’s a rule of thumb. You can take a small room, paint it a dark, gorgeous, seductive midnight blue, add proper lighting, and the room still looks very large. It still looks large because it’s been highlighted.

Don’t just think that if you want to create a big room that you have to paint the walls a light color. All you

Another question to ask when deciding color is “Are you a morning person or are you an evening person?” For example, if the answer is “Oh, I’m a morning person”, the room should be painted a more lively, light color, but if you’re the late person. That room should be painted a nice seductive color. It doesn’t have to be dark. It could be very rich. It could be very dramatic, but those are colors that you will respond to best. When thinking about this, think: “Am I a morning person?” or “Do I feel like I just can get up and smile and get on with my day,” or “Do I like that more seductive look of the darker colors, the richer colors?”

Now, if you want your window covering to show up, contrast that to your wall surface. Let’s say the wall is that soft aqua, but you want to really create some va-va-voom drama in that room. Also, you have a gorgeous window and want to show it off. Use a darker color on the window to contrast to the wall.

Doing that is like putting a frame on a picture; it draws the attention right in, but if you want to create a very open, airy look, blend the window covering color into the wall color.

Whatever’s on the wall, it will blend nicely. Therefore, the window will not be as apparent or take the focal point of the room; it will create a bigger look in the room. There are so many things to think about when we talk about color!

In today’s world there’s no excuse for you or me or anyone else to be uneducated.

If you can’t read there are probably free reading courses for you available somewhere in your community. If you can’t afford a book there are tens of thousands of volumes awaiting your attention at the public library. If you can’t make it to the library someone near you has a book you haven’t read so go borrow it. If worse comes to worse, your local bookstore probably has some very nice chairs for you to sit in while you read the books from their shelves and then replace them when your through.

And there are even more ways for you to increase your intelligence.

All kinds of classes and lectures are available in your community. No doubt there’s a community college somewhere near your home.

Then there’s the Internet. Go to YouTube.com and search a subject you’re interested in. There are likely dozens if not thousands of free videos you can watch to increase your knowledge. Any Internet search engine will bring to your computer screen millions of pages of information on almost any subject. So go search and read and learn.

Hear me on this, my friend:

you have no lack of capacity to learn more. Your ability to learn new things is absolutely unlimited.

You also have no lack of opportunity as the previous paragraphs prove.

So what’s hindering you from increasing your intelligence? Three things…

First of all - lack of curiosity. Curiosity precedes all learning. Only the curious learn. Droopy incurious souls could care less. Someone once said, “The two most common elements in the universe are hydrogen and stupidity.”

Second - the lack of intent. If you have no purpose, no goals, or no direction in your life you have no need to learn anything. Slog on, my friend.

Who cares if you don’t care?

The third thing limiting you from expanding your intelligence is television. According to the A.C. Nielsen Co., the average American watches more than 4 hours of TV each day (or 28 hours/week, or 2 months of nonstop TV-watching per year). In a 65-year life, that person will have spent 9 years glued to the tube.

There may be a limit to the number of books in your local library but there is no limit to the stupidity of those who think they know something simply because they saw it on television. I call television the “bandit of the brain” as it is stealing intelligence and common sense from billions of people on the planet and leaving them ignorant, unachieving, and gullible.

You want to be ready for the boom?

Get smarter than the guy in the cubicle next to you or the gal in the house next door. And you know what? It won’t really take that much effort.

hen applied correctly, heat and ice offer natural solutions. Follow these simple instructions: New Injury

As a general rule, apply ice to new injuries and heat for older, long-standing problems. Only use either real ice or highquality gel ice packs (with one or two layers of cloth or paper towels to protect bare skin) for a maximum of 20 minutes and no more frequently than once an hour.

Here’s what you can expect: • First stage: Cold, lasting about one to three minutes • Second stage: Aching/discomfort • Third stage: Pain, lasting 2-7 minutes • Final stage: Numbness, the most important stage, lasting 5-12 minutes When the area is numb it means that you’re controlling the swelling and slowing down the production of pain chemicals, promoting faster healing and limiting adhesions and scar tissue. The entire icing session should not exceed 20 minutes! Otherwise you can bruise the tissues and it will hurt more the next day.

If the gel ice pack (or frozen peas) is of inferior quality, the tissues will never get to the numb stage and not get the true benefit of icing.

A twice-a-day program of lid cleansing might eliminate the crusts.

Have your husband apply warm compresses (a wet washcloth) to closed lids for five to 10 minutes and then massage the lids. After the massage, he cleanses the lid margins with a cotton-tipped applicator dipped in a solution of one part baby shampoo and one part water.

SAUCY BEEF STEW IS COMFORT IN A BOWL

any kids dislike soft vegetables, the kind usually found in stew. If you’re having trouble getting your children to eat stew, try this saucy beef recipe -- adapted from the wonderful cookbook “Real Food for Healthy Kids” by Tracey Seaman and Tanya Wenman Steel. Tracey’s 13year-old daughter, Margot, said, “This is the only stew I really like, because it doesn’t have any mushy vegetables. I like my carrots crisp.”

This rendition is made without carrots or potatoes so you can serve it -- with its thick, rich gravy -- over a mash of potatoes and parsnips, or a mound of fluffy rice. Add a side dish of crisp vegetables, or a salad, and serve it with some hot, crusty French bread, and you’ve got a meal that will please the pickiest eater.

If you’re fortunate enough to have leftovers, you can stretch out the servings and transform your stew into French Dip sandwiches. Shred any remaining cubes of stew beef and re-heat the meat and any leftover sauce in the microwave for 2 to 3 minutes until warm.

Pour the sauce into a separate serving dish.

bun or hot-dog bun, or a sliced hoagie roll. Place the bread on a cookie sheet under a broiler or in a toaster oven until the cheese starts to melt. Pile the shredded beef on the bread and add a few dill pickles or slices of purple onion, if desired. You can serve the remaining sauce on the side for dipping, au jus style.

This recipe is perfect for crockpot cooking or for slow-cooking in a roasting pan in the oven. It also freezes well and can last for up to six months. This saucy beef stew is a bowlful of comfort on a cold day, or it makes a hearty sandwich for supper on a warm one.

SAUCY BEEF STEW If you’re planning to prepare this stew in a slow cooker, follow steps one and two and then place the meat and the sauce in a crockpot, add the fresh or dried rosemary and thyme, cover and cook on low for 7 hours or until tender.

Remove the sprigs of fresh herbs (if used), and season to taste before serving.

PREP: 10 minutes COOK: About 2 1/2 hours MAKES: 3 quarts 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil 5 pounds lean beef chuck, cut into 1- to 2-inch cubes Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper 3 extra-large onions, finely diced 5 garlic cloves, smashed and peeled 1/2 cup unbleached all-purpose flour 1 quart low-sodium beef broth 2 cups filtered water 2 tablespoons red wine vinegar 1 tablespoon tomato paste 2 sprigs each fresh rosemary and thyme (or 1 teaspoon each dried)

1. Heat 1 tablespoon of the oil in a 6-to 8-quart heavy Dutch oven over medium heat. Add a third of the beef, season lightly with salt and pepper, and cook, turning infrequently, until browned, about 8 minutes. Transfer to a plate and repeat with oil and the remaining beef and more salt in two batches.

2. Add the last tablespoon of oil, the onions and garlic to the pot and cook, stirring occasionally, until softened, about 6 minutes. Sprinkle the flour on top and cook, stirring constantly until thick and lightly browned, about 2 minutes. Whisk in the broth, water, vinegar, and tomato paste. Bring the mixture to a boil.

3. Return meat to the pan, add rosemary and thyme, and return to a boil, stirring occasionally. Reduce heat to medium-

low, cover and simmer gently, stirring occasionally, for 1 1/2 hours.

4. Uncover pot and continue simmering for up to 30 minutes more, until the meat is nicely tender but still holds its shape. Remove the sprigs and season to taste before serving.

he term barrel-fermented means that the unfermented juice went into barrels (almost always oak) and changed into wine there. The term barrelaged usually means that the wine (already fermented) went into barrels and stayed there for a maturation period of a few months or a couple of years. Here’s why you may care whether a white wine is barrel-fermented or just barrel-aged. Wines that are fermented in barrels actually end up tasting less oaky than wines that were simply aged in barrels, even though they may have spent more time in oak. Lots of people get the effects of the two processes backward and may tell you that the barrel-fermented wine tastes oakier.

How much will you spend each year?

Before you can pursue an appropriate investment strategy, you’ll need to know about how much you’ll spend each year. Estimate your costs for housing, food, travel, entertainment, insurance, gifts — everything. Keep in mind that your expenses will likely change annually, especially for items such as health care. Don’t forget about inflation, which will likely cause your expenses to increase over the years.

How should you balance your investment portfolio to provide sufficient income and growth opportunities? Clearly, you’ll need your investments to provide a source of income during your retirement years. At the same time, you will need some growth potential to overcome the effects of inflation, which can erode your purchasing power. Consequently, you will need a mix of income- and growth-oriented investments, with the proportions depending on your risk tolerance and your lifestyle.

How much should you withdraw each year from your investment portfolio?

The answer depends on several factors, including your retirement lifestyle, the size and performance of your investment portfolio, inflation, your estimated life expectancy and the size of the estate you’d like to leave. This decision is important, because the amount you withdraw each year will directly affect how long your money lasts.

From which accounts should you begin taking withdrawals? You may have built three different types of accounts: taxable, tax-deferred and tax-free. It may be a good idea to take withdrawals from your taxable accounts first, thereby allowing your tax-deferred accounts, such as your Traditional IRA and your 401(k), more time to compound and potentially increase in value. If you have a tax-free account, such as a Roth IRA, save it for last to maximize the compounding on money on which you will never pay taxes. (Roth IRA earnings grow tax-free if you’ve had your account at least five years and you don’t begin taking withdrawals until you’re at least 59-1/2.) That said, this is just a rule of thumb.

When should you take Social Security? You can begin taking Social Security as early as age 62, but your monthly checks will be considerably larger if you wait until your “normal” retirement age, which is likely 65 or 66. But if you need the money, you may be better off by taking Social Security at 62 and giving your taxdeferred accounts more time to potentially grow.

As you can see, you’ll need a lot of expertise to successfully manage your financial and investment situations during retirement. If you don’t already work with a financial advisor and a tax professional, now would be a good time to start. Once you’ve got your financial strategy in place, you’ll be better prepared to enjoy an active, fulfilling retirement.

SNIPPETZ BUSINESS AND FINANCE the loan. Do the math with a lender to find your best option and determine how long it will take to pay off those fees. If you save $300 every month by refinancing and the fees are $3,000, it would take you 10 months to pay them off.

You’ll need some equity in your house. Being upside down (owing more than the house is worth) will likely nix a refinance deal.

REFINANCE MORTGAGE AT LOWER RATES

W

ith lower interest rates on home mortgages, it’s possible that refinancing your loan could save you money each month. If the prevailing interest rates are a full percentage point below the rate you currently pay, it might be in your best interest to refinance.

The first step is to look at your credit history. It used to be that a FICO score of 720 was enough to get you a good interest rate on a mortgage. Now you could need a score of 740 or higher.

If your FICO score is good, determine if it’s financially worth your while to refinance. Go online or consult with a lender to determine just how much you’d save each month.

You’ll need to prove your income now. Gone are the days of no-doc loans where you could put down any figure you wanted and nobody would check. Now they want to know for a fact that you earn enough to repay the loan.

Don’t be surprised if you’re turned down once or twice. If you really want to refinance, keep looking.

Two points to consider: 1. Do you plan to stay in the house long enough to recoup the closing costs and make a refinance worthwhile?

2. If you need to move and sell your house, will there be a pre-payment penalty that could cost you thousands of dollars to retire the loan?

Beware choosing anything but a fixed-rate loan. Tens of thousands of homeowners ran into trouble when their mortgages reset to a much higher rate. With a fixed rate loan, you’ll know exactly what your payments will be for the life of the loan.

You’ll have to hunt for a lender, and it might be difficult to get in to see one right now because of the number of people refinancing.

Marriage is serious business. There is no easy way out. You can’t get an annulment just because you have been married less than 90 days.

There is a popular misconception that you can get your marriage invalidated if you only have been married for a short period of time, such a less than 90 days. Actually, the duration of your marriage has nothing to do with your eligibility for an annulment. There is no “get out of jail free card” just because you have been married for only a few months.

INZ FOR KIDZ was started with inspiration of a community business and a 4 year old little girl. When Al and Gloria opened Pinz they wanted to help the community and they have done a wonderful job doing so. More than that they have transformed Pinz into the best looking bowling center I have been in and I am thankful I get to work for people who care so much.

The owners of Pinz had asked myself and the other managers for any community involvement project ideas. I asked if we could do a fundraiser for the Denver Children’s Hospital. They both

looked at me and said go for it what can we do to help. We set a goal of $5000.00 which we have not reached yet, a donation of $2400.00 was made to the hospital during the 36 hours of hope hosted by Alice 105.9, we will continue to raise money for the hospital until that goal is met.

My daughter presented them with the donation since she was the reason I picked this cause. On July 20th 2006 she was diagnosed with a brain tumor that was causing multiple seizures a day.

After seeing a neurologist in Colorado Springs who sat us down to tell us he was not comfortable taking her on as patient he had called a doctor he knew at DCH and had made an appointment for Sera to be seen there two days later. We walked out, put Sera in the car seat and at that moment I felt my chest caving with the realization of how serious this really is. When we sat down with the doctor in Denver for the first time, he scheduled her brain surgery, and the first of many week long stays for her to be in the hospital for testing.

I will never forget the feeling of comfort being

in that hospital because they understand children and they make something scary somehow no so bad. On January 3rd and 8th Sera underwent a two stage surgery to have one-third of her brain removed. We took Sera home five days later, she has been doing well and almost done with treatment. Denver Children’s Hospital saved my daughter’s life and as a parent you can’t ask for any more than that.

Al and Gloria have been very helpful and generous for this cause as well as the community. A big thank you from PINZ to everyone that has helped with this and all of the other fundraisers we host.

Everyone has been very supportive and thank you again.

BI-FOLD DOOR PROBLEMS Bi-fold doors are a common choice for many closets, but you can run into some problems. Generally it’s one of three things. They don’t meet in the center, they press too closely together and won’t close, or they’re uneven. All three are easy to fix!

1. Remove the door by lifting it up and out of the bottom pivot, swinging it away from the bottom bracket and then pulling the top pivot out of it’s bracket.

2. Once the door is removed you can easily loosen the adjusting screw and slide the bracket into the position you want. If the doors don’t meet, move the top and bottom brackets toward center.

If the doors press together too hard and won’t close at all, move the brackets away from center. As for the door that is uneven and looks like it’s sagging towards center, move only the top bracket slightly away from the center.

CHANGE A DOORKNOB A broken knob isn’t just a nuisance, it’s dangerous. It’s easy to replace, so don’t put it off any longer.

1. Pick up a replacement knob at your local hardware store or home center and grab a screwdriver.

2. Take the screws out of the plate located behind the knob and the latch.

Put the screws in a safe place.

3. Remove the knob from both sides of the door. Pull out the latch mechanism.

4. Fit the new latch mechanism into place.

5. Fit the side of the knob with the screw posts through the latch casing, so when you turn the knob it catches the latch and opens the door.

6. When the knob is securely in place, fit the other side over the posts. Attach the screws.

7. Test the key in the lock.

DOOR VIEWER 1. Determine how high you want the door viewer and mark off the height in the center of the door on both sides.

2. Drill a hole straight through the door (check the packaging on your viewer to see what size drill bit you need).

3. Roll some sandpaper small enough to fit the hole, and pull it back and forth several times to smooth out the hole.

4. Insert the door viewer and screw the two sides tightly together.
