“Be nice to nerds. Chances are you’ll end up working for one.” - Bill Gates

N

erds stand up and be counted! May 25 is Nerd and Geek Pride Day. Once upon a time being referred to as a geek or nerd was considered an insult. But now things have changed. Not only do we respect nerds and geeks, but we have a day to celebrate them! Nerd Pride Day was developed very recently in 2006 in Spain and has quickly crossed the ocean to the United States where we are finally recognizing what the nerds of the world have given us. Ever heard of Bill Gates?

WHAT’S IN A WORD? There may be subtle differences in the original definitions of the terms nerd and geek, but nowadays they tend to be used interchangeably. Nerd is defined as a person who pursues interests of an intellectual nature rather than social or more popular pastimes. The word ‘nerd’ is considered a derogatory term even though it is usually used to describe a person with above average IQ. The word ‘geek’ is actually an English word meaning freak or fool and was also used in Low German and Middle Low German; the Dutch “gek” is a current term meaning crazy. Someone called a geek is thought of as being odd and obsessed with intellectual pursuits similar to that of the nerd.

The word ‘nerd’ appeared initially in a 1950 Dr. Seuss book, “If I Ran the Zoo,” wherein he writes, “And then, just to show them, I’ll sail to Ka-Troo and Bring Back an It-Kutch a Preep and a Proo A Nerkle a Nerd and a Seersucker, too!” In this case, the nerd was a small human-like creature who looked angry.

Geek is more thought of as originally showing up in the circus or carnival. Geek shows often included performers who would bite heads off of critters and animals such as snakes, bugs, chickens, etc. However, the definition of geek has changed a great deal over the years and has now become much more synonymous with nerd as in someone who is not part of the mainstream. Other common terms might be dweeb or dork.

of several activities PINZ plans to host throughout the rest of the year in order to reach their 2009 goal of $5,000. A portion of the proceeds from PINZ’s 2nd Annual Car Show, to be held on August 1, will also be donated. PINZ conducts frequent 50/50 raffles during certain league bowling nights and during other special events, such as the annual Halloween and New Year’s Eve parties. Further, PINZ donates 25¢ for each “Blast Bomb” drink sold in the Lounge all year. PINZ owners Gloria McCartan and Al Palmonari decided on The Children’s Hospital Foundation to benefit from these charitable activities because the daughter of PINZ Bar Manager Mindy LaFontaine had received successful treatment of a potentially fatal brain tumor two years ago. From October 2008 to February 2009, PINZ raised $2,425.75 for the Foundation through similar activities and a check was presented to the Foundation during Alice 105.9’s annual radiothon by Mindy’s daughter Sarah. We encourage everyone in the community to come out and have some great family fun and show their support for the fantastic work being done for sick children in Colorado by The Children’s Hospital.

• It was 20th-century architect and businessman Charles Luckman -- known as “the Boy Wonder of American Business” -- who made the following sage observation: “The trouble with America is that there are far too many wide-open spaces surrounded by teeth.” • The Balkan country of Serbia has seen an odd trend in funerals lately: air-conditioned coffins. In 2002, Robin Hoch joined her first band, Jelly Roll. It was during her time with Jelly Roll that she learned everything she would need to know to play music professionally. Some of this includes learning about gear, sound and the lingo of the trade. After three years, in September of 2005, Robin went on to play in a jazz trio by the name of the Mighty Fines and also a group called the Lovely and Talented, both of which she played with for nearly three years. Robin primarily sang in these bands, prior to joining Lovely and talented Robin sang back-up vocals on the band’s debut album, and in 2007 Robin began to incorporate her skill on viola into the sound of the band. Robin has been writing songs for a few years, but it wasn’t until Robin joined the Wendy Woo band in August of 2008 that she wrote an entire song, “Saving Grace.” Along with playing the viola and guitar, Robin also sings in the Wendy Woo band.

During this economic downturn, there is a silver lining. The cost of material goods is lower now than it has been for years. The cost for labor has also been reduced significantly. The result for residential homeowners is the cost of remodeling is at an all-time low. If you remodel during this window of opportunity, you will realize a huge return on your investment. When our economy turns around, as it has several times before, the old adage “Buy Low, Sell High” can really apply to the value that will be added to your home.

First of all, the future is promised to no one. You may be gone tomorrow and you will have wasted your last hours on this good earth, bogged down in worrying about something that will either never happen or that you have no control over anyway! Same goes for the past! If you made a mistake, most often you have learned a valuable lesson or made some type of spiritual progress as a result. If you have done somebody wrong in some way—apologize and move on! Everyone makes mistakes; as long as we learn from them and try not to repeat them, they have a purpose.

Attempting to “live in the moment” allows you to take time to “smell the roses” in your daily life, to enjoy your family and friends, along with the opportunities you are given each day to become a better person, rather than agonizing over the past or worrying about the future. Practice it—you’ll find yourself less stressed out and more grateful for each day you have been given, each a gift of the present.

SOME WEIGHTY STATISTICS

the U.S. is currently 97 million American adults or 55% of the population (according to the National Institute of Health, June 1998). 2. The number of overweight Americans increased from 25% to 33% between 1980 and 1991 and to 55% currently.

brought to you by Tom and Lynne Manzer of the Diet Center

3. The percentage of dietary fat American adults consume daily is 34% of their total daily intake.

S

tudies by the National Center for Health Statistics, conducted over the last two decades, show obesity is on the rise. Health risks related to obesity include diabetes type 2, hypertension (high blood pressure), stroke, dyslipidemia (elevation of triglyceride levels and depression of HDL “good” cholesterol levels), cardiovascular disease, gallbladder disease, respiratory disease, some cancers, arthritis and gout.

4. At any given time, 33-40% of adult American women are trying to lose weight. 5. At any given time, 20-24% of American men are trying to lose weight. 6. Nearly 80% of patients with type 2 diabetes are obese. 7. Annually 300,000 deaths are attributable to poor diet and inactivity.

Not only does obesity increase an individual’s risk for numerous health conditions, it also has emotional and social consequences. A moderate weight loss of 5-10% and maintenance of that weight can improve overall health and well-being and lower the risk for health related problems due to obesity. A moderate weight loss has also been shown to improve mood, self-esteem, selfefficacy (one’s perception of their ability to change or perform specific behaviors, such as exercise) and body image.

8. Obesity related diseases approaches $100 billion dollars annually. 9. Obesity more than doubles ones chance of developing high blood pressure. 10. Almost half of breast cancer cases are diagnosed among obese women; and an estimated 42% of colon cancer cases are diagnosed among obese individuals. 11. Americans spend an additional 33 billion dollars annually on weight reduction products and services.

Tens of millions of Americans are dieting at any given time. To be effective, weight loss should be a multifaceted approach. Changing eating habits, setting reasonable goals, including exercise and changing attitude are vital.

f you are interested in adopting Bert or Vinny into your heart and home please call SAINT Animal Rescue located in Calhan. Our phone number is (719) 541-3099. It is always a challenge when adopting a new pet. SAINT Animal Rescue asks the adopter to give the animal a reasonable amount of time to adjust to it’s new family and environment. This is so very important to your new family member as well as your existing family members.

BERT

Please visit our website at:

Bert is a Chihuahua mix. He is about 2 or 3 years old. Bert is shy but very sweet. He gets along well with children, dogs but we are not sure how much he likes cats. He does well on the leash but needs a little more work in that area. He rides well in the car. Bert has a really cute underbite. He lived in a place with many other dogs and since there were so many he was pretty much lost in the crowd. He never received much attention there. He has been living at a foster home and is learning how much he likes to be with people and how much he loves attention!

VINNY

saintanimalrescue.org and as always thank you for caring. “If you can’t decide between a shepherd, a setter, or a poodle, get them all...adopt a mutt!” - ASPCA

Vinny was abandoned. One of our wonderful foster parents heard about Vinny’s dilemma and took Vinny into her home and he has proved to be one special little boy. He is a Terrier mix about 9 months old. We have found little Vinny to be a very loyal boy and seems to be a good watch dog. He is good with children, dogs but we are just not sure how Vinny feels about cats. We think when Vinny is grown he’ll be maybe a medium-small size dog.

DINING GUIDE

After marinating in the jerk spices, the meat should slowly be smoked over a low fire. Using pimento (allspice), apple, mesquite or hickory wood chips provides an intense smoke that will permeate the meat and create an authentic jerk flavor. The wood chips should be soaked in water for at least 30 minutes before placing them on the coals. This slow smoking method also makes the meat moist and tender.

JERK PORK FIRES UP THE GRILL

Jerk marinades are a wonderful way to add spice and a touch of the Caribbean to your barbeque menu. This recipe for Jerk Pork uses the traditional marinade recipe; however, other spices can be incorporated to create your own flavorful variation.

JERK PORK

C

aribbean dishes exhibit the influence of a wide variety of cultures and cuisines including British, Dutch, French, Spanish, East Indian, West African, Portuguese and Chinese. The cooking technique that made Jamaica famous is the spicy jerk marinade that’s used for both meats and vegetables. The name is derived from the way the meat is poked or “jerked” with a sharp object to create the holes where spices are inserted. Jerk cooking dates back to the Carib-Arawak Indians who inhabited Jamaica in the 17th century. After capturing an animal and thoroughly cleaning it, the carcass was “jerked” and the resulting holes were stuffed with a variety of spices. Hot peppers and herbs were plentiful on the islands and were used as a preservative before refrigeration was available. The combination of spices also acted as a marinade and a way to tenderize tough cuts of wild game. To cook the jerked meat, the Indians dug a deep pit and lined it with stones. The pit was filled with green pimento wood, which, when burned, would smoke heavily and add to the flavor. The holes that were “jerked” into the meat also allowed heat to escape without loss of moisture. Using marinades based on hot peppers and herb combinations was created by the Indians and the West African Cormantee -- who were also called Maroons, the name given to slaves who escaped the plantations -- to flavor and preserve a variety of meats. Jerk marinade is composed of four main ingredients: Scotch bonnet peppers, whole allspice berries, scallions (also called green onions or spring onions) and thyme. For best results, the meat should marinate in the refrigerator for 12 to 24 hours.

719-481-2222

almer ing In P

Jerk marinades typically use Scotch Bonnet peppers, one of the hottest peppers in the world. Remember to always wear gloves when preparing fresh peppers. It’s best to remove the stems and seeds with your gloved fingers or paring knife. Removing the seeds doesn’t affect the flavor, but greatly decreases the heat. Afterward, always wash your hands thoroughly with soap and cold water and clean any utensils or surfaces you have used.

1/3 cup vegetable oil 1/3 cup distilled white vinegar 4 green onions, chopped 2 cloves garlic, chopped 2 to 5 Scotch Bonnet peppers, seeded and minced, to taste 3 bay leaves 3 peppercorns 1 tablespoon dried ground cinnamon 3 to 4 whole allspice berries, lightly crushed 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg 3 pounds pork chops, about 1 inch thick Combine the oil and vinegar in a small bowl. Stir in the green onions, garlic, chili, bay leaves, peppercorns, cinnamon, allspice, pepper and nutmeg. Trim any excess fat from the pork chops. Place pork chops in a re-sealable plastic bag. Pour the spice mixture over them, coating each chop well. Place the bag of pork chops in a baking pan and place the chops in the refrigerator to marinate for up to 24 hours, turning once or twice every four hours. Allow the chops to come to room temperature before grilling. Heat the grill until the coals are somewhat white with ash; the flame should be low. Place the chops on the grill and cover with the lid. Grill for 5 to 10 minutes per side, until the chops are no longer pink in the center. Serves 4 to 6.

T

he best fish to use is halibut because it is light but firm. You can use fresh tuna or any other light white fish. The fish can also be battered and deep fried which is how I first experienced a fish taco in Hawaii. They were yummy. I have also had fish tacos with flour tortillas and cheese but I like the flavor of the corn and the cheese can over power the light taste of the fish. Be creative, have fun and enjoy!!!

Wine Appreciation & Tasting Tips

brought to you by Dirk at The Wine Seller

THE EYES HAVE IT

T

he first step in your wine appreciation quest is visual. Fill the glass about one-third full, never more than half-full. Pick it up by the stem. Observe its color and appearance. No other liquid is as vivid and variegated, or reflects light with such joy and finesse. There’s good reason wine’s appearance is often compared to ruby and garnet, topaz and gold. The color you see can give you clues to help assess the wine’s age and body. Try to decide precisely which shade of red or white it is and whether it will stain the tablecloth permanently if you tilt the glass too far. Look at the wine in your tilted glass and just notice how dark or how pale it is and what color it is. Brighter more purple tones indicate younger red wines while a more brickish-red color indicates an older wine. Conversely, darker more golden whites usually indicate an older wine while a lighter more brilliant pale yellow indicates a younger white.

the cult ‘70s kids show, this DVD package is 32 flavors of cool. Not only do you get the complete series, but it comes packaged in a retro, metal lunchbox like the ones sold back when the show was on TV.

New DVD Releases for Week of May 25, 2009 It’s a slow week. No major motion pictures are coming out on DVD this week, but there are a few gems to be found, mostly in the form of re-releases of films and TV show boxed sets. Here are my faves: PICKS OF THE WEEK “Land of the Lost: Complete Series” (Limited Edition Gift Set) -- Released to coincide with Will Farrell’s theatrical remake of

“Falling Down” (Deluxe Edition) -- “Falling Down” is an historic film. Not because it’s a cinematic masterpiece (it isn’t), but because it’s the only reasonably good movie director Joel Schumacher ever made. Michael Douglas stars as a bespectacled engineer named Foster who’s lost his job and his mind during a blistering hot day in Los Angeles. Foster goes ballistic, raging against minorities and well, society in general, as he cuts a bloody swath throughout the City of Angels. Robert Duvall plays a cop (who is retiring that day and has issues with his much-younger ex-wife) who tracks Foster down. Not sure what makes this DVD release “Deluxe.” Maybe it’s the

commentary tracks featuring Douglas and Schumacher. Still, it’s a pretty good Guilty Pleasure Movie. “Jeeves and Wooster: The Complete Series” -- Before Hugh Laurie became a household name in America with “House,” he was a major television star in the UK with such shows as “A Bit of Fry and Laurie” and “Blackadder.” But Laurie’s best work can be seen here in “Jeeves and Wooster,” the brilliant television adaptation of P.G. Wodehouse’s satirical look at the English upper class during the Jazz Age. Laurie plays Bertie Wooster, a good-hearted though dim upper-class bachelor whose aunt hires a valet named Jeeves (Stephen Fry) to keep the poor young fool out of trouble -- a talent for which Bertie excels. Most of Bertie’s misadventures involve him attempting to help his equally dim

18

friends with their romantic entanglements, which leads to Bertie concocting a harebrained scheme and Jeeves discretely saving Bertie’s bacon when the situations go all higgledy-piggledy. TV SERIES “Ice Road Truckers: The Most Dangerous Episodes” “The Closer” The Complete Seasons 1-4 “Designing Women” The Complete First Season “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” The Ninth Year “Gunsmoke” Season 3 Vol. 2 “The Mod Squad” Season 2, Vol. 2 “The Universe” The Complete Season Three “UFO Hunters” The Complete Season Two “The Invisibles” Series 1 “Cities of the Underworld” The Complete Season Three (c) 2009 King Features Synd., Inc.

The outcome will more than justify your efforts. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Resist the temptation to cut corners just because time is short. Best to move ahead step by step so you don’t overlook anything that might later create time-wasting complications. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Use the good will you recently earned with that well-received project to pitch your ideas for a new project. FINANCIAL FOCUS SMART FINANCIAL MOVES FOR “EMPTY NESTERS” Provided by Adam Grayson of EdwardJones Investments

I

t’s graduation time at colleges across the country. If you have children graduating from college, you’re probably excited about the opportunities that lie ahead for them. But once your last child leaves home, and you become an “empty nester,” you also may find some good opportunities for yourself — opportunities to improve your financial situation. In fact, your empty nester status may help you make progress toward what are likely some key financial goals at this stage of your life: Getting rid of debt and accelerating your savings for retirement. What steps should you consider? For starters, you could downsize your home by moving into a smaller, less expensive one. If you make a profit on the sale of your home, you could use it to invest for retirement and clear up debts. Of course, you may be emotionally attached to your home and neighborhood, but downsizing may be a good financial option to consider at some point. Here are a few other suggestions for taking advantage of your empty nest: “Max out” on your retirement plans. If you now have money no longer needed for your children’s college education, use these funds to help save for retirement. Try to fully fund your traditional or Roth IRA, and put as much as you can possibly afford into your 401(k) or other employersponsored retirement plan. If you still have money available after “maxing

(limited time - 6 month purchase minimum)

out” on these accounts, look for other retirement savings vehicles. Increase your investments for other goals. Up until now, part of your investment strategy — perhaps a large part — was aimed at building enough resources to help your children pay for college. Since that need has now been met, you may be free to boost your investment toward other goals, such as travel, a vacation home, charitable giving, funding for a small business you hope to operate after you retire — the list could go on and on. And since you are probably entering your peak earning years, you may be able to add substantially to the investments designed to help you achieve these various objectives. Reduce your credit card debt. If you have more disposable income available now, try to pay off your high-rate credit cards. By freeing up this money, you can save and invest more. Evaluate your insurance needs. When you purchased your life insurance, you may have factored in enough coverage to pay off your mortgage, send your kids to college and provide some retirement funds for your spouse. But if your kids are through school, your mortgage is nearly paid off and your spouse has accumulated some money in an employersponsored retirement plan, you may not need the same amount of life and disability coverage. Any money you can save on insurance can be used to help fund your IRA, 401(k) or other investments. As an empty nester, you will miss your children, but you’ll also find that you have greater freedom to pursue your hobbies or other interests. And by taking the steps described above, you can help yourself move closer to reaching your financial objectives as well.

SHIFT OUR COMMUNITY FROM GREED TO GREEN!

T

hese are some of the many strategies Green Americans are using to go green on a tight budget. The time for the green economy to take off is right now when so many Americans, and people all over the world, have a need to find ways to save money.

1. Grow Your Own “The biggest thing I’m doing this year is growing my own vegetable garden. It will be organic, and it doesn’t get any more local than my own back yard. Plus, it’s one heck of a money saver. It will even help me build community, because I will surely have extra fruits and vegetables to share with my neighbors.” — Jessica S., Littleton, CO

“Riding a bicycle obviously saves money and resources, but I believe it also builds community. When I am on a bicycle, I feel more connected to my surroundings, and I’m more approachable. I’m always saying hello to people as I ride past, whereas in a car, that interaction would be lost.” — Sarah P., Minneapolis, MN

“Although I get 48 miles per gallon with my hybrid car, I still make every effort to plan my trips to avoid needless driving, to carpool, and to take public transportation and telecommute, as often as possible.” — Jeanne T., Springfield, VA

3. Reuse, Reuse, Reuse “One way I have discovered to keep items out of landfills and save a bunch of money in the process is FreeCycle – an online group where members post things they are looking for, and what they have to get rid of. I have received a dining room set (complete with six chairs, buffet, and hutch), and a really good juicer for no cost. And I’ve used FreeCycle to give away all the clothes that my kids have outgrown.” — Lea P-W., Painesville, OH

5. Harness the Sun “We installed solar panels on our home. We hope that with our example others will see that in the long-run it’s a money-saver, and they will understand the benefit for both the planet and their bottom lines.” — Ellen S., Boulder, CO

6. Waste Not, Want Not “I compost. I keep my garbage creation to a minimum. I bring my own cloth bag to the grocery store. I recycle every unusable nail, every screw, every wire, etc., at my local transfer station.” — Ruth O., White Salmon, WA

7. Dispense With Disposables “I have ceased purchasing paper towels and instead use old rags for cleaning and wiping up spills. I didn’t realize how many paper towels I used to go through before I started this new system.” — Sarah F., Tullahoma, TN

8. Reallocate Your Resources “I make our own laundry detergent. It is all-natural and costs less than a penny per ounce to make! We used the money we were saving to buy our meat in bulk from local farmers who raise their animals on pasture, and buying Energy-Star appliances for our house.” — Carrie C., Salem, VA

9. Green celebrations!

4. Stop the Leaks “I’m unplugging the toaster, lamps, cell phone chargers, laptops, and other electronic devices when I’m not using them. These things leak energy needlessly when they are plugged in all the time. It’s the quickest way to save energy and it saves me money on the electric bill too.” — Rachelle N., Nashville, TN

a) Used wedding dress from eBay, $10! b) Asking guests to carpool to save gas, money, and the environment. c) Sending plantable wedding invitations. That’s right, you bury the invitations and wildflowers spring forth, just like love blooms. d) Buying organic flowers from the farmer’s market … and more.

My fiancé Mark and I will be celebrating our day free from wedding-induced debt and the weight of a heavy carbon footprint!” — Michelle B., Oshkosh, WI

10. Invest Wisely (needs vs. wants) “We’re always asking ourselves whether this next purchase is a ‘need’ or a ‘want.’ When we actually stop to think about it, there are precious few needs. We’ve also begun investing some savings with a community bank. The smaller community bank with the social mission has been reliably beating the pants off of the megabanks in terms of rate of return.” — Steve O., Mamaroneck, NY

11. What Really Matters? “I’m trying to stay focused on people and relationships rather than stuff. I support locally owned businesses. I volunteer my time. I support organizations that help people help themselves. I do without stuff; that isn’t what matters anyway!” — Kelly G., Charlotte, NC

12. Get everyone you know involved in going green and saving green. Send this list of ways to go green and save money to all your friends and family, or post it to your blog or Web site. Engage others to help them save green in these tough economic times, and get more involved in going green for the sake of their health, people, and the planet. SCHOLARSHIP SCAMS

A

s with any area involving money, finding scholarships for college is full of potential to be scammed. Treat your hunt for scholarship funds the same as you would any other financial transaction -- with caution. Here are some tips: • Avoid matching services that involve paying a fee. Use the Internet instead, and look online for free services matching students with scholarships. Chances are the scholarship scammers are using the same online service and will charge you for information you can get for free. Rule of thumb: Your only cash outlay

The automatic injunction also prevents doing other things without the other party’s consent like transferring marital property or canceling health, auto, or life insurance.

to get a scholarship or information should be the cost of a stamp on an envelope. • Some matching services might claim that they have information you can only get from them, or that they have a high matching success rate. Beware anyone claiming to have special or unique information. • Ignore unsolicited written offers or phone calls. If you didn’t specifically ask for scholarship information from a particular company, it’s likely a scam. Legitimate scholarship groups aren’t going to hunt you down and ask you to take their money. • Don’t pay application fees, or any fee called a “processing” fee or any amount in advance for a promised scholarship. • There are no guarantees. No matching service can deliver on a promise that you’ll get a scholarship. Beware, too, promises to refund your money if you don’t get a scholarship. • If you talk to someone offering a scholarship on the phone, take notes. Get names, dates and times of conversations, and what was said. (You’ll need that information

if you get scammed or even suspect a scam and want to report it.) • Don’t give out Social Security numbers or banking or credit-card information. • Don’t be rushed. If there’s a “time limit,” ignore the offer. If anything sounds at all like a high-pressure tactic (“You have to sign up today or the money will be gone!” or “I can only hold this scholarship for you for a little while.”), hang up the phone. • Avoid scholarship seminars. You’ll be subjected to high-pressure tactics to part with your money. If you want to report a scam, call the Federal Trade Commission at 1-877-382-4357. While it won’t handle your individual problem, it does gather numbers and look for patterns. Also notify the attorney general in your state. PLAN NOW FOR A BETTER FUTURE By Rose Fortune Social Security Public Affairs Specialist in Colorado Springs

M

ay is Older Americans Month, and the theme for this year’s observance is “Living Today for a Better Tomorrow. While much of the theme’s emphasis is on the need for aging Americans to take care of their physical well-being to ensure a healthy future, the theme can also apply to their financial well-being. Not only personal finances, but how older Americans help keep the overall economy alive. Money may be a bit tight right now, but just a little extra effort today in financial planning can yield big dividends later on no matter what your age. Here’s why. A study on retirement satisfaction by researchers at Boston College asked retirees this question: “All in all, would you say that retirement has turned out to be: very satisfying, moderately satisfying, or not satisfying at all? They found that among retired couples, those who answered “very satisfied or “moderately satisfied had income in retirement replacing 72 percent of their pre-retirement earnings, while those who said that their retirement was “not satisfying at all had income replacing only about 60 percent of their pre-retirement earnings. If these numbers seem daunting to you, remember that Social Security provides about 40 percent of pre-retirement earnings replacement for the average wage earner, making Social Security the foundation upon which you can build your secure retirement. You

also will need other savings, investments, pensions or retirement accounts to make sure you have enough money to live comfortably when you retire. And Social Security offers several tools to help you plan now for a better future. Every year workers 25 and older receive a Social Security Statement in the mail about two to three months before their birthday. The Statement gives you an estimate, based on your current earnings, of what you might expect in Social Security retirement benefits. You can then visit our Retirement Planner — at www.socialsecurity.gov/retire2 — where you can personalize various financial scenarios to determine what your individual retirement plan should look like. You’ll also want to visit our popular Retirement Estimator. There, you can key in some basic information and get a quick and accurate estimate of your benefit amount using different scenarios. You can find the Retirement Estimator at www.socialsecurity.gov/estimator. Once you know just what to expect from Social Security in retirement, you will know just how much you need to save to be among the “very satisfied American retirees. And America will thank you for it, because Social Security payments don’t stop in the bank accounts of older Americans. From there, they venture into the economy, purchasing goods and services. Learn more about Social Security at: www.socialsecurity.gov.
