Perhaps it’s befitting that Walter Cronkite, America’s beloved evening news anchor in the 60s, 70s and early 80s, died just days before the 40th anniversary of Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin’s famous walk on the moon. More than half-million people tuned in July 29, 1969, to listen to Cronkite recount the steps of the men from Apollo 11. The Moon... Continued on Page 2

THE MOON AND THE OUTHOUSE
THE FULL MOON
The half-moon or crescent moon was used on outhouses to distinguish the men’s outhouse from the women’s outhouses. The crescent moon symbol goes back to colonial times, when many people couldn’t read. The crescent moon was also cut out of the wooden outhouse to allow light to get in.

THE MOON’S MANY FACES
he moon orbits around the Earth once per month, the angle between the Earth, the moon and the sun changes, and is referenced as the moon’s phases. New Moon (0-45 degrees in front of the sun): its energy is birth/renewal. It’s a time to start new projects, friendships, romance and to plant gardens. Crescent Moon (45-90 degrees ahead of the sun): In a life cycle, the crescent moon symbolizes independence from a mother – an understanding that one is his/her own entity. This moon is about becoming an individual, each with unique ideas. First Quarter Moon (90-135 degrees ahead of the sun): There is friction in the air – this could be a time of crisis. It’s a time to understand a problem and implement a plan for a solution. Gibbous Moon (135-180 degrees ahead of the sun): This phase is about analysis and evaluation, an intellectual period – perhaps analyzing the solution to that problem. Full Moon (180-225 degrees ahead of the sun): It’s a climactic or energetic period – a time to howl at the moon! It’s also known as a time of fertilization and reproduction. Disseminating Moon (135-90 degrees behind the sun): Sharing one’s knowledge with others about what has been learned under the previous phases of the moon is important during this period. Last Quarter Moon (90-45 degrees behind the sun): Somewhat like the first quarter, this period is a time for action – creating choices, outcomes, taking action … or not. Balsamic Moon (45-1 degree behind the sun): A phase also referred to as “Karma.” If one hasn’t learned the lessons of the first seven phases, he or she cannot move on. People born during this phase often have a mission – something bigger than themselves – to carry out. This is not about outcome – it’s about conclusion, and it’s a time to release the past.

(Yes, that pun was intended.) • Several months ago, The Baltimore Sun reported this stranger-than-fiction true-crime story: A robber tried to use a sawed-off shotgun to hold up a man named Roland Scott. Incensed, Scott wrestled the gun away from the wouldbe thief and ordered the man to hand over his own money and take off his clothes. After the robber complied, Scott started beating the man with the butt of the weapon. During the beating, the shotgun went off, fatally shooting Scott in the stomach.

COOKING FOR ONE
C
ooking for one (or even for just two people) can be a chore, and too often we opt to take the take easy way out. Maybe we’ll load the grocery cart with microwave dinners, or we’ll just have cereal for dinner. Our reasons are valid ones: Packages are too big, and we often waste food because we don’t eat it before it goes bad. It takes too much time to prepare food and then clean up afterward, and it isn’t worth it for

Cooking for one doesn’t have to be hard. Here are some ideas:
• If you have nearby friends in your situation, consider banding together to prepare group meals a few days a week. You won’t have to cook every day -- and you’ll have company while you eat.
• Buy individual portions, even if they cost more. For example, frozen vegetables come in one-serving size. Small cans of vegetables or fruit contain two servings. When you consider that there won’t be any waste at all, it’s worth the extra money. Buy packaged frozen chicken breasts or fish fillets, and only use what you want.
• Make a big tray of lasagna or a onedish chicken casserole, and freeze the rest in meal-size portions. • Experiment! Try something new. Libraries have cookbooks with cooking-for-one recipes, or look online at recipe sites. Consider getting a miniature slow cooker. Load it up in the morning with your in-

HOW TO WIGGLE OUT OF THE MUD By Dr. Ron Ross
PREPARE FOR THE BOOM
YIELD YOUR YESTERDAYS “Yesterday, all my troubles seemed so far away,” sang the Beatles back in 1965. It’s easy to recall their melancholy lyrics and haunting melody because we all have our yesterdays. Why is it that we either overromanticize how idyllic life was in the past (“Love was such an easy game to play”) or we over-mourn its sadness and woe (“Suddenly, I’m not half the man I used to be.”). Back in the late 1960s and early 1970s my wife and I lived in Livingstone Zambia (central Africa). It was some of the best years of our lives. When we talk about it we often over-state how wonderful life was back then. Because we were so happy living there we overlook the many serious problems we faced such as malaria, the night the marching ants invaded our home, the time I was arrested and held at the border, and the afternoon my wife heard the gunfire that killed several Canadian tourists only a few miles from our home. Some years later we lived in Texas and then Wyoming - not nearly as pleasant as those days in Zambia. Financial problems, unfulfilling

labor, no real friends, lousy climate (Texas was too hot, Wyoming was too cold and both were too windy). I could whine on some more, but you get my drift.

The truth is Zambia wasn’t as idyllic as we cause ourselves to remember and Texas and Wyoming weren’t as bad as we recall.
SNIPPETZ TEAM WINS PINZ PROZ TOURNAMENT
Do you know the most significant thing about your yesterdays? Whether your yesterdays are over-romanticized or overmourned, still…they are over; they cannot be reclaimed. What’s past is past and you can’t do anything about it. “This only is denied to God: The power to undo the past.” - Agathon If you want to accomplish anything in your future you must get your past in perspective. Or as Publius Syrus said back in the first century BC, “Today is the pupil of yesterday.” It makes sense to draw lessons from your past; but it makes no sense to either glory or wallow in it. The only good reason to consider your past is to equip yourself for the future.
P
INZ Bowling Center in Palmer Lake held its annual PINZ Proz tournament on Saturday afternoon, July 11. This tournament gives the top placing teams from all PINZ winter bowling leagues the opportunity to compete against each other to be the overall #1 team in the Center.
So, when looking at your yesterdays, ask two questions: What worked, and what didn’t work? Then forget the rest for it is either over-rated bliss or under-managed bitterness.
Although the competition was stiff, the Snippetz Team took the day, winning the top slot and $225 in prize money. Those competing on behalf of Snippetz were George Wilkins, Merlin Prater, Dennis Leftwich and Mark Liggett. The Snippetz Team bowls on the Monday Night Football League at PINZ and took second place in that league for the 2008-2009 season.
Don’t get me wrong, I love to reminisce. It’s OK to look at yesterday – but consider it only for a moment. Enjoy the fond memories for a moment or glance briefly at the sorrows, but do not linger long on either one. If you look constantly at the past your eyes are diverted from today and by so doing you are stealing from tomorrow.
Coming in second was 1-3 Victory, which took 3rd place in the Family Tyme League.
By the way, would you like to know what God wants to do with your past? He wants to make everything right again. Just read the 23rd Psalm and consider these four words: “He restoreth my soul.” Comprised of members of the Bradberry family – Bea, Zac and Bill, and their family friend, Al Crusha, they took home at total of $175 worth of prizes – including cash for the adults and PINZ gift certificates for the kids.
© 2009 Ronald Ross Feedback: Dr.Ross@comcast.net. For more about Dr. Ross please visit www.MileHighMotivator.com.

The third place winner was another team from the Family Tyme league – the Pinhunters: Mallorey, Drew and Kevin Hunt, and their family friend Johnny Christison.
The third place prize was valued at $100 and was also split between cash for the adults and PINZ gift certificates for the kids. Everyone who competed in this year’s tournament had a great time and are all looking forward to the start of the 20092010 season. PINZ is currently recruiting new league bowlers for the season and has something to offer bowlers of every age, skill level and interest. Among the most popular benefits offered to league bowlers is the $1 bowling card, which permits league bowlers to bowl any day, any time for $1/game. If you are interested in joining a league at PINZ, please call Debbie or Jeff at 719487-PINZ or visit the PINZ web site at www.thepinzsite.com. You can sign up in person or use the form provided on the web site.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Can you alert your readers to the importance of paying extra attention to your pets during the summer months? It’s another blistering hot summer here in the South, and almost every afternoon I see neighborhood pets struggle to deal with hot sidewalks, or panting with thirst. Many thanks. -- Charlene in Smyrna, Ga. DEAR CHARLENE: Definitely. As you note, it’s extremely important for owners to keep a close eye on their pets, even if they’re indoors all the time. Here’s a list to follow: 1. Fresh, cool water should always be available, indoors and out. 2. Dogs (and some cats) welcome an occasional ice cube, but watch them while they eat it. Dogs usually like crunching the cubes, and there’s a
10
choking risk. 3. Outdoor pets need a shady spot with good airflow in which to rest. 4. Check on outdoor pets frequently (every 15 to 30 minutes). 5. Don’t chain a dog outside while you go to work. Besides it being lonely, the dog is at risk from the heat, from predators or other dogs, and from humans. Plus, prolonged chaining is a form of abuse. Find a doggie daycare or a pet sitter to monitor and care for your dog. 6. Indoor pets tend to be smaller and can be sensitive to wide swings in temperature, so keep the house temperature in a comfortable range (68 F. to 78 F.). 7. Cats should have both sunny and shady places to stretch out indoors. 8. If traveling with your pet, don’t leave small pets in the car, even with the windows cracked. They can easily succumb to the heat. 9. Monitor your pet for signs of injury or heat stress: excessive panting, lethargy, a matted coat or behavioral changes. If you suspect heat injury, rush your pet straight to the veterinarian.

NUMBER, TYPE OF POLYPS DETERMINE NEXT EXAM DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Will you talk about colon polyps? I had polyps removed during a colonoscopy. My doctor recommends another colonoscopy in three years. I have retired, and my insurer has declined to cover my colon because I had something removed from it. I will have to pay for the colonoscopy. When I was working, the insurance company insisted on colon procedures for preventive care. Please advise. -- A.C. ANSWER: Polyps are small growths sprouting from the lining of many organs. In the case of colon polyps, some of them turn into colon cancer. The problem is that a doctor looking at the polyp cannot tell if it has the cancer potential unless the polyp is removed and viewed with a microscope. More than 150,000 new cases of colon cancer occur yearly in the United States,
and every year there are more than 50,000 deaths from colon cancer. Colon cancer and colon cancer death can be eliminated by removing all suspicious polyps. Guidelines urge everyone to have a first colonoscopy at age 50. If a polyp is discovered that measures more than two-fifths of an inch, if the polyp has microscopic evidence of dangerous changes or if a person has three or more polyps, that individual is told to have a repeat colonoscopy in three years. Otherwise, if all is well, the next colonoscopy can be delayed for 10 years. I don’t understand your insurer’s unwillingness to insure your colon, since the company is less likely to lose money on you because you have been conscientious in having the examination and its followup. Perhaps a telephone call to the company can get it to change its decision. If the company won’t budge, I’d still have the scope exam, even if the money has to come out of your own pocket. The assurance that all is well is worth every penny. The booklet on colon cancer explains this common condition in detail and its treatment. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 505W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. (c) 2009 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved

et the most out of your fruits and vegetables! Most people know fruits and vegetables are rich in vitamin C, but some people don’t know that vitamin C is a water soluble vitamin and can be easily destroyed in the food storage and preparation process.
eople who support you during your Diet Center Weight Loss program can contribute to your success by being more than just someone to turn to for encouragement. They can be someone to “report” to. Reporting to a Diet Center Counselor or friend can help you stay on track in several ways. One reason is that most people try harder to succeed when they do not want to disappoint someone else besides themselves. People you report to can also help you stay focused on small, achievable goals that contribute to bigger goals. They may also see problem areas that you might have overlooked.
In order to avoid the loss of this valuable vitamin in your produce, here are a few hints. Store foods for as little time as possible. When cooking food containing vitamin C, steam or microwave them in a small amount of water for a short period of time. Wine Appreciation & Tasting Tips
brought to you by Dirk at The Wine Seller
ROOTY TOOTY SWEET OR FRUITY?
B
eginning wine tasters sometimes describe dry wines as sweet because they confuse fruitiness with sweetness. A wine is fruity when it has distinct aromas and flavors of fruit. You smell the fruitiness with your nose; in your mouth, you “smell” it through your retronasal passage. Sweetness, on the other hand, is perceived on the surface of your tongue. When in doubt, try holding your nose when you taste the wine; if the wine really is sweet, you’ll be able to taste the sweetness despite the fact that you can’t smell the fruitiness.

JOHN LONG RETURNS TO COLORADO!
J
ohn Long is back in Colorado for limited engagements at Bas Bleu Theatre, 401 Pine St., Fort Collins August 8th & 9th at 7:30 pm both nights, and also at the 'Blues & Greens' room in the Boulder Outlook Hotel and Suites, 800 28th Street, Boulder on Wed, August 12th In a world where everyone adopts a gimmick, an angle, a pose in order to get over, John Long is a living anachronism. He is a 100% pure, dyed-inthe-wool, no-BS bluesman for life. He was born, raised and bred on the blues. It’s not a ‘career choice’ for Long, not just a type of music he plays, or something he happened to be influenced by at some point. He’s not a blues player,
PYRAMID
he’s a Bluesman, with a capital B.

It’s a heyday that’s long gone, but in Long’s hands – in his world – it’s no gimmick, no pale imitation. This is the music that John Long has lived his whole life to create.

PALMER LAKE TIME TRAVELS BACK TO 1900 WITH THE “2009 RETURN OF THE ROCKY MOUNTAIN CHAUTAUQUA ASSEMBLY”
J
oin us as the Palmer Lake Historical Society turns back the clock back over 100 years during August 7-9, 2009, when it sponsors a three-day return of the Chautauqua Movement to the historic town of Palmer Lake. The Chautauqua Movement, which featured educators, speakers, and entertainers, first came to Palmer Lake in 1886 and brought educational, cultural, and recreational programs to the citizens of the Palmer Divide. For three days, the Historical Society will return Palmer Lake and historic Pinecrest to the bygone era of 19001910, when times were simpler and the pace was slower. Listen to historic figures such as President Teddy Roosevelt, Ms. Lucretia Vaile, the infamous (and unsinkable) Molly Brown, and Countess Murat, as they tell of life in the early 1900s. Also, attend and participate in events and activities, such as a vaudeville show, vintage baseball game, dinner theatre, and much more, that mirror the Chautauqua Assemblies of long ago. Most events are free. President Teddy Roosevelt will open the three-day celebration at 7:00 pm on the evening of August 7, at the Palmer Lake Town Hall. Immediately following the opening ceremonies, there will be a vaudeville show in the Town Hall, featuring minstrels, illusionists, trick ropers, and much more – all for the outrageous 1900-era price of 25 cents. At 11:30 am on Saturday, a team of our local town heroes will challenge the Colorado Territorial All Star

Long has the uncanny ability to create and perform original material that sounds as if it came from a long-lost cache of vintage recordings by one of the classic bluesmen – it’s music completely unique and new, while at the same time hauntingly familiar. Long’s songs contain all the darkness and light, the humor and the pathos, and the fully realized musicality of the very best blues from the heyday of the genre.
team to an old fashioned baseball game. The Palmer Lake Volunteer Fire Department will sell hot dogs and crackerjacks during the game, which will be played under original rules in the pasture by Palmer Lake (bring your lawn chairs, blankets and umbrellas). Saturday evening, the Tri-Lakes Center for the Arts is hosting a dinner theatre catered by Chef Bill Sherman of Amuze for the amazingly low price of $30.00 per ticket. The theatre presentation is “45 Minutes from Broadway” and features many patriotic songs from the early 1900’s. Sunday’s events will be held at the Pinecrest Event Center and will include an old-time church service, box lunches, Model T and Model A classic cars, historic figures, a sing-a-long of old-fashioned songs, and much more. Has he really traveled back in time? Is he in a coma and dreaming all this? Or is Sam just some delusional crackpot imagining all of this? That’s part of the mystery Sam needs to unravel

DOG OF THE WEEK
“Battlestar Galactica: The Complete Series” -- I haven’t chosen “BSG” as Dog of the Week because I have something against the series. To the contrary, I thought Seasons 1 and 2 were awesome (3 and 4 not so much). No sir. The reason this boxed set is Dog of the Week is due to its pricing. The set retails for $280. You heard right. This boxed set doesn’t really come with much in the way of extra special features, so basically, if you want to pay an extra $150 for nifty packaging, knock yourself out, Cupcake. You’re Invited … For most people, discussing long-term care is often an uncomfortable topic. However, creating a long-term care strategy now may help to protect your family from financial burden in the future.

f you own a small business, you have a lot to think about: sales, expenses, marketing, cash flow, competition — the list goes on and on. However, by spending so much time on the issues of today, you may overlook the concerns of tomorrow. Owner-only 401(k) — Also known as an individual 401(k), an owner-only 401(k) offers you many of the same advantages of a traditional 401(k): a range of investment options, tax-deductible contributions and tax-deferred earnings growth. You may even be able to choose a Roth option for your 401(k), which allows you to make after-tax contributions that can grow tax free. In 2009, you can contribute up to $49,000 to your owner-only 401(k) or $54,500 if you’re 50 or older. (To make deductible contributions for the 2009 tax year, you’ll need to set up your plan by Dec. 31, 2009.)

Solo defined benefit plan — You may have thought you had to work for a big company to participate in a traditional pension plan, also known as a defined benefit plan, but you can set one up for yourself if you’re self-employed or own your own business. This plan has high contribution limits, which are determined by an actuarial calculation, and your contributions are typically taxdeductible.

SEP IRA — If you have just a few employees or are self-employed with no employees, and you’re looking for a low-cost, low-maintenance retirement plan, you may want to consider a SEP IRA. You’ll fund the plan with taxdeductible contributions, and you must cover all eligible employees. (Employees themselves cannot contribute.) You can contribute up to 25 percent of compensation (if you’re an employee of your own corporation) or 20 percent of income if you’re self-employed, up to $49,000 annually. And you can fund your SEP IRA with virtually any type of investment you choose. SIMPLE IRA — As its name suggests, a SIMPLE IRA is quite easy to set up and maintain, and it can be a good plan if your business has fewer than 10 employees. As the business owner, you must contribute in one of two ways: a dollar-for-dollar match of up to 3 percent of salary or a contribution of 2 percent of employees’ salaries (up to $4,900 per year). Employee contributions are tax-deductible, and your matching contributions are generally deductible as a business expense. Still, while a SIMPLE IRA may be advantageous for your employees, it’s less generous to you, as far as allowable contributions, than an owner-only 401(k), a defined benefit plan or a SEP IRA. For 2009, your annual contributions are generally limited to $11,5000, or $14,000 if you’re 50 or older by the end of the year. You can also make a matching contribution of up to 3 percent to yourself. To determine which plan is best for you, consult with your tax advisor and a financial advisor who has experience with small businesses. But don’t wait too long to get started — you’re moving closer to retirement all the time. This article was written by Edward Jones for use by your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor. quirement is met. This means is that if the marriage is less than ten years, the Court will order the service person to pay part of the retirement directly to the non-military spouse, rather than the military itself making the payment.
© Christopher C. Meyer, February 2008
T
here are so many people in the military in our area that divorces involving military personnel are commonplace. There is a popular misconception that divorces involving military personnel are different from civilian divorces. In fact, the differences between military divorces and civilian divorces are not very significant. If you are in the military, and if you and your spouse have lived in Colorado for more than 90 days and your children have been here for more than six months, a Colorado court can divide your property and debts, determine whether maintenance (alimony) is appropriate, and make all decisions regarding parental responsibilities (parental decision-making and parenting time). Military pensions are divided much the same as civilian pensions. There is another popular misconception that unless the spouse of the military service person has been married to the service person for at least ten years, the non-military spouse cannot receive part of the service person’s pension. Ten years is significant only in that the military will not pay part of the pension to the non-military spouse unless the ten-year re-
items. Stock up on sale items with a long shelf life, such as canned vegetables, fruits, stews and meats. Drink mixes, powdered milk and boxed side dishes like macaroni and cheese need only to have water added. Keep track of expiration dates if you keep the food longer than a month. Use them up before expiration, and replace as you go.
Some people in the military believe that they can convert part of their pension to disability and avoid paying part of the disability to the non-military spouse, thereby reducing the total amount the non-military spouse gets. It is correct that the Court cannot divide the disability. However, the Court can adjust the division of the pension or adjust the maintenance or property award to make up for the difference, so that the total amount awarded to the non-military spouse is not diminished by the disability.
If you are legally separated from a military spouse, you are still eligible for the same benefits you enjoy if you are married. This scenario is an example of a good reason to look into a legal separation in Colorado, rather than getting a divorce. If you have been married to a person in the military for twenty years while the military spouse has been active service for twenty years, you retain your military benefits such as health insurance, etc., even if you get a divorce. Good luck with your military divorce or legal separation as you leave the marriage zone, and don’t believe all that you hear about additional complications.

During this economic downturn, there is a silver lining. The cost of material goods is lower now than it has been for years. The cost for labor has also been reduced significantly. The result for residential homeowners is the cost of remodeling is at an all-time low. If you remodel during this window of opportunity, you will realize a huge return on your investment. When our economy turns around, as it has several times before, the old adage “Buy Low, Sell High” can really apply to the value that will be added to your home.

A home purchase must be closed no later than Nov. 30, 2009 to qualify for the credit. Real Estate Agents are finding that a majority of buyers see the tax credit as a major motivation to buy this year even though they can afford to buy a home without it. For others, it merely reinforces their existing decision that this is the time for them to buy.

FIRST TIME HOME-BUYER $8000 TAX CREDIT! Are you a First-Time Home Buyers who is eager to reap Tax Credit Benefits, but unsure of the details? For a simple step-by-step guide with common questions answered, go to: www.youtube.com and do a search for these subjects: “First-Time Homebuyer's Credit” and “Federal Housing Tax Credit Explained”.
The fact that the tax credit expires at the end of November should begin to get more and more First Time Home Buyers off the fence and into a home in the next few months.
The tax credit was a key part of the economic stimulus package approved by Congress and signed by President Obama in February. It was designed to encourage home purchases and it can be worth as much as $8,000 in reduced taxes or added income, depending on how you apply it to your taxes.
The tax credit provides a financial boost by replenishing the savings a Buyer uses for a down payment and closing costs. It also helps to cover some of the incidental expenses that often come with purchasing a first home, such as buying a lawn mower, decorating or purchasing new furniture.
The Federal Tax Credit for First-Time Home Buyers is now half way to its Dec. 1, 2009 expiration date.
Many buyers do not realize that to qualify as a first-time

buyer you can have owned a home previously as long as you have not have owned a home for three years before making a home purchase that qualifies for the tax credit. This years version of the Tax Credit eliminates the need for repayment unless the home is sold within three years. Buyers will receive the full benefit of the tax credit to which they are entitled even if they don’t pay that amount in income taxes for 2009. For example, if an individual or couple qualifies for the full $8,000 credit but owes only $3,000 in income taxes for the year, their entire tax bill would be eliminated, and they would also receive a tax refund check for $5,000!
