unday, August 16, was National Tell a Joke Day and since it landed smack dab on a Sunday this year, let’s hope you didn’t tell the old joke that starts with, “A Priest, a Minister and a Rabbi walked into a bar …” at your place of worship. No one really knows how long this lesser-known and unfortunately lesser-celebrated holiday has been around, when it started or why it came to be in the first place. The important thing is that it does exist and you don’t have to be a professional comedian to participate. Telling A Joke... Continued on Page 2

KNOW YOUR MATERIAL Probably few of us possess the talent to write a truly funny joke, and even professional writers all too often rely on material they hear. For instance, Jim Carlson was a comedy writer in Hollywood and wrote much of the memorable material for “Laugh-In” and other sitcoms. His close friend was Morey Amsterdam who played Buddy Sorrell on the Dick Van Dyke Show. One day Jim called Morey in New York and said, “Morey, you’ve got to hear this one.” Jim started the joke and just as he was about to deliver the punch line, Morey piped in with the punch line. Jim said, “How could you know that? I’ve never heard that joke before. It’s a new joke!” Morey responded with, “Jim, I wrote that joke last week.”
IT’S ALL IN THE DELIVERY Take if from a guy who’s bombed on and off stage telling jokes. Delivery is 90% of the battle. Here are few tips to follow and, most importantly, the usual pitfalls one should try to avoid when telling a joke correctly. • The first Golden Rule of comedy is worth repeating – know your material. Only the true professionals like Robin Williams or the late Henny Youngman can “wing it” through forgotten material and still get laughs.
• Commit to the joke. You know the material so make sure you follow through to the end. StopSo when you hear a good joke, take the time to ping in the middle of a joke is like serving halfwrite it down as soon as possible. If there’s no baked pizza. herry Rogers’ passion for painting shows in her impressionistic style reflecting the subtleties of color and the play of light and shadow. She captures the joy of nature in a sparkling landscape, the delicate beauty of a flower, a quaint cottage, or a moody seascape - whether painting plein air or from a photograph taken during her many travels. She expresses much emotion and passion in her painting. Sherry originally studied art in Manhattan Beach, California, where she was awarded 1st and 2nd Places in the Manhattan Beach Annual Art Show. She then set her paints aside until she began painting again after a 20-year hiatus.
(719) 481-1981 Telling A Joke... Continued from Page 2 audience becomes involved by inviting them into the story. Remember, your words are painting a picture in the audience’s mind, so use as many descriptive words or phrases as possible to make the picture more enjoyable. • Original jokes are the funniest, so by being inventive you’ve made a joke new and not someone else’s warmed over bit. • The “unexpected conclusion” is what helps makes your joke funny. If your audience can see where the punch line will end up, you’re likely to garner only a groan or gratuitous chuckle. If you’re not able to change or rewrite the joke to avoid this, then drop it from your catalog of gags.

• Keep your joke short and sweet. Most five minute jokes tend to lose their zing as the audience has started thinking of something else like, “when is this going to be over.” Long jokes need to be captivating and the audience will hang in there with you if you make the story interesting, or if there can be a few chuckles in the middle. • This is the second most important Golden Rule. If you don’t fully understand the joke, then don’t tell it. Period! • Never ask permission to tell a joke. Remember the time and place have to be appropriate so just jump in and strut your stuff. • Never, never, never tell anyone or announce to your audience how funny the joke is. It only makes people defensive or standoffish, and you’ll get little or no laughs no matter how good the material. • If you’ve ever heard someone tell a joke trying to use a French accent, and by the time he

PINZ’s mechanics have been working hard over the summer months to make the shot on the lanes more appealing to a broad spectrum of bowlers across varying skill levels. In addition, they have been performing extensive maintenance on the Center’s bowling machines, not only making needed repairs, but also cleaning and calibrating them. The bowlers each bowled their 3 games on freshly cleaned and conditioned lanes, then completed an evaluation form. “The feedback on the forms was overwhelmingly positive”, said PINZ co-owners Al Palmonari & Gloria McCartan. All of this is being done in anticipation of the start of the 2009-2010 bowling leagues later this month. PINZ hopes to attract

• It was American humorist, writer and television host Sam Levenson who related the following remembrance: “It was on my fifth birthday that Papa put his hand on my shoulder and said, ‘Remember, my son, if you ever need a helping hand, you’ll find one at the end of your arm.’” • The Associated Press recently reported on a kind act gone terribly awry. An Israeli woman surprised her mother by having her old mattress hauled away and replacing it with a brand-new one. When the mother returned home and discovered what had happened, she was terribly distraught. It seems the woman had been hiding money in the old mattress for years -- about $1 million. • According to a survey conducted in 2008, 15 percent of American men spend more than an hour in the bathroom every day. Unsurprisingly, the number of women who spend that long in the bathroom is much higher, at 38 percent. • It’s been reported that whenever he traveled, French philosopher, mathematician, scientist and writer Rene Descartes brought with him a doll named after his daughter, Francine. • The most common surname in the United States is Smith, followed, in order, by Johnson, Williams and Jones.

• A man in Sandusky, Ohio, evidently had a rat problem in his home -and had a novel way of dealing with it. It seems that whenever he saw -or thought he saw -- a rat, he would shoot it. This method didn’t always work the way he planned, however. He once shot himself in the foot.
On another occasion, he mistook his wife’s hat for one of the pesky rodents and shot it. Unfortunately, the hat was on her head at the time, and the man was charged with negligent assault.
Thought for the Day: “Almost all our faults are more pardonable than the methods we resort to to hide them.” -- Francois de La Rochefoucauld

--Injuries involving walkers accounted for 87 percent of falls. Canes accounted for 12 percent.
• Get your eyes checked at least once a year. As our vision changes, what once worked in our homes might be dangerous to us now.
One big problem with falls is that the first one sets up a fear of falling again. That in turn may limit mobility and exercise, which in turn decreases our flexibility and strength -- which can cause even more falls.
--Women had more injuries than men, and walkers were the worst culprits: 78 percent of women were injured in walker falls, versus 22 percent of the men.
• Don’t let newspapers or books stack up by the reading chair. Keep things off the floor and keep paths cleared of anything you have to step around or over.
--A third of those injured in a fall ended up being admitted to the hospital.
• Use double-sided tape to hold down scatter rugs. (Best bet: Get rid of them.)
--Sixty percent of the falls happened at home, and there were five times more falls from tripping than from slipping.
• Increase the lighting in your home, and turn on a lamp at the wall switch by the door instead of walking into a dark room.
Here are some steps to reduce the risk of a fall, even if you don’t use a walker or a cane:
• Wear study shoes. Slippers can be slippery.
5
The best bet, then, is to avoid that first fall. If you need help clearing out your space or making changes, ask for it. from naturally occurring sugars from crops such as corn. Producing Sorona uses 30% less energy and reduces carbon dioxide emissions by 63% than an equal amount of nylon fiber. That’s an extremely important stat to humans AND rhinos. These SmartStrand fibers also have a pretty impressive durability factor that Rhino will definitely test to the max. Each carpet fiber has been wear-tested with over 20,000 footsteps to simulate a whole year of normal wear. Can it withstand an almost 1.5-ton rhinoceros for two weeks? ou are unique – that’s it. You’re not “somewhat unique” nor are you “very unique” you are unique. You are the only one like you. Unique, you see, is a term that cannot be modified by an adverb of degree or a comparative adverb.
A Nose for Space The Manitou Art Theatre voyages to outer space with this original performance developed for All Pikes Peak Reads (APPR) by Jim Jackson and Benjamin Pratt, directed by Birgitta De Pree. World-class clown Jim Jackson returns as Mr. Guffaw, a hapless inventor who dreams of traveling into Space and sets out to build a rocket ship. For instance, if someone says that you are “somewhat unique” they probably mean you are unusual, maybe a little odd, or even weird. If someone describes you as “very unique” it probably means that you are exceptional in some way…or maybe eccentric, or worst of all, frightening. But either way, they are not using the word unique correctly. Unique means only one thing: one of a kind. So you can’t be “very” one of a kind or “somewhat” one of a kind. You can only be one of a kind.

moment. You feel the way you feel. No one reacts emotionally to life just like you, and for the same reasons given in the previous paragraph. My brother and I had the same demanding math teacher in high school. I ended up hating math and he ended up loving it. So don’t try to be someone else…be you. Don’t walk or talk or think or sing or dress or groom or live like someone else or some group just because you think they are cool or because they want you to conform to them. And don’t allow others to diminish the real you just because you don’t quite fit their ideas of what you should do or who you should be. Oscar Wilde said, “Most people are other people. Their thoughts are someone else’s opinions, their lives a mimicry, their passions a quotation.” Don’t allow that description to apply to you. Unpack your uniqueness. Let the real you shine. Drop the phony imitations of others and be uniquely you! You’re not your best you can be if you are tying to be someone else; but you are your best when you are totally you. And that is for one simple reason: you are unique – that’s it. You’re not “somewhat unique” nor are you “very unique” you are unique. You are the only one like you.
And that’s what YOU are. You are one of a kind. You look the way you look. Unless you have a great deal of money to spend on plastic surgery, you can make only minor adjustments to your appearance. You

ROCKRIMMON LIBRARY CELEBRATES TRI-LAKES CENTER FOR THE ARTS THEIR 20TH ANNIVERSARY PRESENTS Much like the people living in Falcon today, prior to 1989 folks would anxiously line up to wait for the weekly bookmobile stop in Rockrimmon. The old 1964 Gerstenslager mobile library would stop
TOWN MOUNTAIN
By the end of 2000, the Rockrimmon branch had seen over 170,000 visitors to the branch. The staff had checked out over 250,000 items that year. The usage of the branch continued to rise each year.
In 2004 the library expanded again. Additional space was again available adjacent to the existing building so a larger meeting room was added, growing the branch to its current 8,600 square feet. By this time, only four years since it’s last outside of the Safeway grocer store expansion, it had seen an increase offering holds and limited library of visitors to 61%. materials for check out. Without interior lights, visits on cloudy days were difficult and when it was cold the staff would attempt to light the temperamental propane heater, trying to avoid burning off their eyebrows, to gain a bit of heat. But still the Rockrimmon neighbors flocked to the stop each week. Finally in November of 1989, the library district opened a branch in the Safeway Village shops. At the time it was the largest branch with 5,600 square feet.
This new permanent space only leads to creating the busiest branch in the district as well. By 2000 more space was needed and luckily for the Rockrimmon Branch space was available adjacent to the existing space. An additional 2,000 square feet was added. To celebrate both the addition and the branches 10 year anniversary, a sock hop was held. The Rockrimmon Rockabration was a one day event that invited the local businesses to help celebrate. Over 2,000 people attended the event.

THIS IS TANNER!
We found homes for Tanner’s brother and sister and now Tanner is waiting for his forever home. Tanner is a really good boy! He will need some training but there isn’t a mean bone in his body. He, right now, might not be good for small children only because he can play a little rough. As he gets older and has some training that will disappear. He comes to you when he’s called. He will run up to you and wiggle all over to be petted. He seems to get along with other dogs and runs through our yard with one of our smaller dogs. Tanner is fast though! Very fast! He is a tannish brown and has beautiful eyes. We are not sure of how Tanner will do with cats.

DOG GROOMING 101 It is always a challenge when adopting a new pet. SAINT Animal Rescue asks the adopter to give the animal a reasonable amount of time to adjust to it’s new family and environment. This is so very important to your new family member as well as your existing family members. Please visit our website at saintanimalrescue.org and as always thank you for caring. “The one absolutely unselfish friend that man can have in this selfish world, the one that never deserts him, the one that never proves ungrateful or treacherous, is his dog.” -George Graham Vest
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Like everyone else, I’m trying to save money these days, and so I want to cut back on the number of trips my Cocker Spaniel “Jake” takes to the groomer. I take him once a week now. Do you have any grooming tips? -- Sally in Pittsburgh DEAR SALLY: Taking on some grooming tasks yourself can save quite a bit of money and can even make you more aware of Jake’s health. Regular grooming will make you familiar with his coat and skin, and you’ll notice changes that a groomer might miss. Here are some general grooming instructions to follow: • Brush your dog’s coat regularly: Long-haired breeds should be brushed out daily to prevent matting; mediumand short-haired dogs can be brushed weekly. • Check your dog’s ears each time he’s brushed, particularly if he has long,
10
floppy ears. Look for debris in the outer ear and note if the ears have any odor, signaling possible yeast or bacterial infection (consult the vet if you notice an odor). Gently sweep dirt or other debris away from the ear canal using a clean cloth soaked in mineral oil. • Discharge at the corners of a dog’s eyes can be gently wiped away using a cotton ball soaked in cool water. • Brush your dog’s teeth regularly -daily, if possible. Use only toothbrushing gear designed for dogs: A special finger brush and flavored toothpaste are available at the vet’s or the pet store. • A weekly bath is fine for most dogs. Don’t use human shampoos; use shampoo specifically formulated for dogs. • Nails should be trimmed once a month -- a trying task for dogs and owners, sometimes. If you want to try it yourself, have the groomer show you how to safely trim Jake’s nails. Just these basic grooming steps will keep Jake looking good between visits to the professional groomer. More tips are available from the American Kennel Club at www.akc.org/public_education/grooming.cfm. Send your tips, questions and comments to Paws Corner, c/o King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Jasmine Garden
2 1/2 teaspoons black pepper 2 1/2 teaspoons poultry seasoning 1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes 6 to 8 sprigs of fresh rosemary, soaked in water 3 1/2 cups Kicked Up Bottled Barbeque Sauce (see recipe below)
To Smoke the Chicken: Remove old ashes from the grill, and clean the grate with a wire brush. Add the wood charcoal and ignite. When the charcoal has burned to white ash, place the chicken quarters skin side down on the grate to render some of the fat and crisp the skin. Add the water-soaked rosemary sprigs and a handful of water-soaked hickory chips to the edge of the fire to create an aromatic smoke. Partially close the vents on the top of the lid of the grill to seal in the smoke. After 8 to 10 minutes, turn the chicken skin-side up. If the smoke dies down, add another handful of hickory chips. Heavily baste half of the chicken pieces with the barbeque sauce (leaving the rest of the pieces without any sauce, if you plan to freeze them for later use in another recipe). Move the pieces around to keep them from burning. Grill the chicken for an additional 12 to 15 minutes until done, making sure the meat is cooking evenly on both sides. *** Angela Shelf Medearis is known as The Kitchen Diva and is the executive producer and host of “The Kitchen Diva!” television cooking show. his weekend, I plan to use my barbeque grill to prepare several chickens. Grilling a few extra chickens has become one of my favorite ways to stock my freezer. I love to place fresh herbs like rosemary on the coals with aromatic wood chips to enhance the smoky flavor of the meat. When the chicken is almost done, I’ll baste some of the pieces with a spicy barbeque sauce that I make using my favorite commercially bottled brand as the base. The rest of the chicken pieces will be smoked until done, but without any barbeque sauce. I place some of the plain, smoked chicken pieces in freezer bags. I label the bags so that I know exactly how long the chicken has been in the freezer. I’ll serve these whole pieces, plain or with a rosemary-flavored sauce, over rice, potatoes, pasta or couscous. The grilled chicken pieces will save me several hours on nights when I need some fast food from the freezer. The rest of the smoked chicken will be used in a variety of ways. I’ll remove the skin, shred the meat, and portion out one or two cups into small freezer bags. The shredded chicken will be used on salads, in tacos, soups, and casseroles, and for sandwiches and wraps. Grilling chickens and freezing it is a delicious way to save time and money! This easy-to-prepare recipe for smoked chicken ensures that the meat will be flavorful and moist.

Serve straight from the coals, or make ahead and enjoy at room temperature. 8 large (about 2 1/2 pounds) portobello mushrooms, stems removed 1/4 cup olive oil 1/4 cup balsamic vinegar 1 teaspoon sugar 1/2 tablespoon salt 1/2 teaspoon dried rosemary 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper 1. Preheat oven to 400 F. Place rack in large roasting pan. Pour in enough boiling water
GRILLED SALAD: About 15 minutes before serving, cut 1 large head radicchio into 6 wedges. Cut each of 3 medium-size heads Belgian endive lengthwise in half. In small bowl, mix 3 tablespoons olive oil, 1 tablespoon chopped fresh rosemary leaves or 1 teaspoon dried rosemary leaves, crushed, and 1/2 teaspoon salt. Place radicchio and endive on grill over medium heat; brush with olive-oil mixture. Cook 5 to 10 minutes, turning them occasionally, until vegetables are tender-crisp.

Rooibos Chai Tea by Yogi Tea Water Old Fashioned Oats Milk Honey
1. Bring water to a boil and steep tea bags for about 15 minutes. 2. Place oatmeal in a bowl with brewed tea. 3. Follow cooking directions on the label of the oatmeal. 4. Top with milk and honey.
I
looked at several recipes for chai tea and found they all had basically the same ingredients cardamom, cinnamon, and cloves. Some of them added ginger, black pepper and vanilla. I decided to look at several different store bought chai teas to see which would have the best flavors with the
oatmeal. I found that I liked the Rooibos Chai by Yogi Tea. The Original Oregon Chai was too sweet and some of the others didn’t have strong enough flavors. The tea can be made ahead of time in larger batches and kept in the refrigerator until it’s needed if you wanted to save some time in the morning. If you have a favorite chai recipe then go ahead and use it. Just make it stronger. Sugar will work in place of the honey but won’t be as healthy. I always use the Old Fashioned oats because the texture is a more defined. Try adding some nuts and/or some fruit.

or firsthand experience of how the principle of taste works, try this. Make a very strong cup of tea. When you sip it, the tea will taste bitter because it’s very tannic. Now add lemon juice; the tea will taste astringent (constricting and drying out your mouth) because the acid of the lemon juice and the tannin of the tea are accentuating each other. Now add lots of sugar to the tea. The sweetness should counter-balance the acid-tannin impact, and the tea will taste softer than it did before.

Conveniently located at 755 Hwy. 105, Unit 12, behind the West End Center in Palmer Lake Polycystic ovary syndrome is fairly common. Signs of it are a diminution or complete stoppage of menstrual periods, hirsutism, obesity and large ovaries with many cysts. One of the mechanisms responsible for some polycystic ovary symptoms is an overproduction of androgen -- male hormones. The unwanted pattern of hair growth stems from androgen excess.
FEMALE FACIAL HAIR CAN BE HORMONE RELATED
Idiopathic hirsutism -- hair growth without a cause found -- might be a mild form of polycystic ovary syndrome. That’s a popular theory expounded by many experts. Rarer causes of hirsutism include adrenal gland overactivity, tumors of the adrenal gland or ovary, pituitary gland tumors and some prescription medicines. You’re not going to solve this on your own. You need a doctor to evaluate your hormone status. The appropriate treatment hinges on finding a specific cause.

When a cause cannot be found, shaving, electrolysis (SEE AD BELOW), depilatories (chemical hair removers) and laser treatments are options. Shaving doesn’t make hair grow faster or coarser.
DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I’m a 26-yearold woman with an embarrassing problem. I’m growing a mustache. What causes this? I have started to shave, but I worry that shaving is going to make the hair grow faster and coarser. I see some hair on my breasts, too. What can I do about this? -V.K.
Vaniqa cream, a prescription item, gets rid of unwanted hair quite well. Birth-control pills work when a woman needs estrogen. Spironolactone, a water pill, can counter the influence of male hormones and is often useful.
ANSWER: Hair growth in females in places where it should be found only in males is hirsutism (HERE-suit-izm). Such areas include the skin above the upper lip, the chin, the chest, the thighs, the upper back and the abdomen. Hair in those places is sensitive to the action of male hormones. Common causes for such hair growth are idiopathic (a definite cause not found), menopause (when female hormone production dips) and polycystic ovary syndrome.

BECOMING A PAYEE MAY BE THE BEST WAY TO HELP By Rose Fortune Social Security Public Affairs Specialist in Colorado Springs
I
f a loved one, friend or neighbor receives Social Security or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits but is no longer physically or mentally able to take care of his or her financial affairs, you may want to consider becoming a representative payee. Then, you’ll be able to help them with managing their money. Keep in mind that being a representative payee is not the same as having power of attorney. Even if you do have power of attorney, you will need to apply to be a representative payee in order to have the benefit payments made to you on the beneficiary’s behalf. When we learn that a person is no longer able to handle his or her own Social Security or SSI benefits, we conduct a careful investigation and appoint a relative, friend or other interested party to serve as the representative payee. This means that if you agree to be a representative payee and we appoint you, we pay you the person’s benefits to use on his or her behalf. As a representative payee, you would be responsible for using the benefit payments to help meet the basic needs of the beneficiary. Primarily, the funds

should be used to provide food, clothing, shelter, utilities and other essential needs for the person eligible for benefits. As a representative payee, you need to be aware of the beneficiary’s needs so you can decide how benefits can best be used for his or her personal care and well-being. Each year, Social Security will mail you a form to account for the benefits you have received. The quickest and easiest way to complete the form is online, at www.socialsecurity.gov/payee. You can also complete the paper form and return it to Social Security. As a representative payee, you will also need to tell Social Security about changes that may affect the beneficiary’s eligibility. This includes things like changes in living arrangements, other income, and resources. If you decide you want to help someone by becoming their representative payee, you’re in good company. More than seven million people who get monthly Social Security or SSI payments each month have a representative payee because they need help managing their money. By agreeing to serve as a representative payee, you have taken on an important responsibility — one that can make a positive difference in both the beneficiary’s life and your own. In order to keep everyone honest (you know who you are,) we have moved the answers and solutions to the trivia and puzzles to the next page (19).
New DVD Releases for Week of August 17, 2009 “The Simpsons” Season 12 -- OK, I confess that I haven’t watched the show in years, but I do buy the boxed sets from time to time. Season 12 is definitely one for my collection. There are two versions of this collection: a standard box with a picture of the Comic Book Guy, and a limited edition box that is actually shaped like the Comic Book Guy.
The reason is that Season 12 contains the classic episode, “Worst Episode. Ever” -- the one where Bart and Milhouse run his store after he’s had a heart attack. In addition, there are the memorable episodes like “A Tale of Two Springfields,” with guest stars The Who; “The Computer Wore Menace Shoes” a spoof of the cult series “The Prisoner;” “Trilogy of Error” -- a send-off of “Run Lola Run”; and so many more. The Season 12 collection is also jam-packed with goodies: Commentary tracks for all 21 episodes; Easter Eggs (hidden features) on all four discs; featurettes, including “Comic Book Guy: Best Moments Ever,” and “The Global Fanfest.” “Tyson” -- I saw this documentary in the theater last year and was blown away. Director
James Toback gained unprecedented access to Mike Tyson, and the footage he got is a compelling insight into the mind of boxing’s most controversial figure. It is Mike Tyson’s story told by the man himself. It’s not the most balanced account of his life, but then again, “Tyson” isn’t meant to be that kind of documentary. It is raw; it is intimate -- and a great film. “The 5 Deadly Venoms” -- If you liked “Kill Bill,” then you’ll love this flick. It’s a cheesy, over-the-top kung-fu movie from 1978 that Quentin Tarantino “borrowed” from when creating the plot for “Kill Bill.” The plot of “5 Deadly Venoms” centers around a student from the Poison Clan who must go on a quest to find the five greatest masters from the clan -- each with his own unique fighting style --

ou most likely need to save and invest for retirement. But if you have children, you also may want to put money away for their college education. Are these two goals mutually exclusive?
These bonds and funds may be subject to state, local or the alternative minimum tax (AMT).
They don’t have to be — but achieving them both can be challenging. Over the past generation, the responsibility of paying for retirement has largely shifted from the employer to the employee. At the same time, college prices have skyrocketed and show few signs of slowing down.
Prospectuses are available for any of the mutual funds offered. The prospectus contains more complete information including fees, charges and expenses as well as other important information that should be carefully considered. Your financial advisor can provide you with a prospectus which should be read carefully before you invest or send money. Seating is limited, so reserve your place today.
Consequently, you face a delicate balance when it comes to preparing and saving for both college and retirement. Perhaps you may be facing large college bills in your prime retirement savings years. Or if your child graduates with college loans and you plan on helping to pay for them, your cash flow may fall short of the amount needed to meet your monthly bills during retirement.

But as you think about the college vs. retirement issue, keep one overriding fact in mind: You have less time to save for retirement than your children have to pay for college. If your children do take out some loans, they will likely have decades in which to repay them.

Ultimately, the amount of financial assistance you provide for your children’s college education is a personal and emotional decision, as well as a financial one. Still, you can take steps to help out your children without shortchanging yourself.
IT’S TIME TO MAKE THE WORLD
A BETTER PLACE
One possible strategy is to contribute to
your 401(k) and your IRA, and then use whatever money you still have available to fund a college savings plan. If your employer offers a match for your 401(k) or other retirement plan — such as a 403(b) or 457(b) — you should, at the very least, contribute enough to earn the match. And if at all possible, you’ll want to “max out” your IRA, which offers significant tax benefits. Your contributions to a traditional IRA may be tax-deductible, and your earnings grow on a tax-deferred basis. Depending on your income level, you may be able to contribute to a Roth IRA, which provides tax-free earnings, provided you meet certain conditions. In 2009, you can contribute up to $5,000 to your IRA, or $6,000 if you’re 50 or older. Once you’ve earned your employer’s 401(k) match and then, if possible, contributed the maximum amount to your IRA, you can begin looking more closely at college savings vehicles, such as a Section 529 plan or a Coverdell Education Savings Account, both of which offer taxfree earnings and withdrawals as long as the money is used for qualified education expenses. (Withdrawals for other types of expenses may be subject to federal and state taxes plus a 10 percent penalty.) Also, Section 529 plan contributions may be tax-deductible in certain states for residents who participate in their own state’s plan. To make sure you understand the tax ramifications of a Section 529 plan, you’ll want to consult with your tax advisor. By committing yourself to regular investing, and by taking advantage of the various investment accounts available, you can make progress toward your retirement goals while still tackling the high costs of higher education. That’s a “win-win” situation. This article was written by Edward Jones for use by your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor. For additional information, contact:

veryone appreciates and respects what grandparents do for their grandchildren. There are a significant number of grandparents who are parenting their grandchildren. It is regrettable that so many parents have abdicated their role, but we are all fortunate that there are grandparents who are willing and able to take over. All of the grandparents that I am familiar with who are raising their grandchildren would rather be grandparents then parents. They are taking on the parental role until the parents are willing and able to assume their parental responsibilities. Whenever the government becomes involved in children’s lives and custody is an issue, grandparents are an obvious choice as caregivers. Whenever there is or has been a child custody case or a case concerning the allocation of parental responsibilities relating to a child, the grandparents of that child may request an order granting reasonable visitation time. The court will determine if such visitation is in the child’s best interests. Under certain circumstances, grandparents may file a petition requesting that they be allocated parental responsibilities with regard to a grandchild. These cases involve situations when the grandparents have had physical custody of the child for an extended period of

ealth Savings Accounts offer a way to put aside money for medical expenses with pretax dollars. Not everyone qualifies for an HSA, but for those who do, it can be a way to save money and reduce your taxes.
In situations where one or both of the parents are fit and able to carry on their parental responsibilities, grandparents have no rights with regard to the grandchildren where there is not or has not been any child custody case involving the grandchild. In the United States Supreme Court case of Troxel v. Granville (2000), the Court stated that parents have a fundamental liberty interest in the care, custody and control of their children. The Court went on to state that if a parent is a fit parent, the government will normally not interfere in a parent’s decision-making process with regard to their child. This means that courts will not get involved in disputes between fit parents and grandparents with regard to grandparent visitation. As a practical matter, this ruling should not impact grandparents to a great extent because adult children usually get along fairly well with their parents and realize that it is in their children’s best interest to have a good relationship with the grandparents. Most parents appreciate the important role the grandparent’s play in their grandchildren’s lives.

time, or when the case is commenced when the grandchild is not in the physical care of one of the child’s parents. The court may also permit grandparents to intervene in a case involving the allocation of parental responsibilities with regard to a grandchild. In all these circumstances, a court will evaluate the grandparents’ fitness as caregivers as well as the child best interests.
Another requirement is the cap on your out-of-pocket annual expenses (including deductibles and co-payments). For individuals that amount is $5,800 and $11,600 for families.

Three big benefits: You can take your HSA with you if you change jobs or health insurance policies. The money rolls over from year to year and accumulates. You can use the money for things your medical insurance might not cover, such as dental and eye care. Signing up for an HSA is easy. Sign up through a bank or an insurance company. The hard part is deciding on the insurance policy itself, and that’s where an adviser can come in handy.
