“Our siblings push buttons that cast us in roles we felt sure we had let go of long ago - the baby, the peacekeeper, the caretaker, the avoider.... It doesn’t seem to matter how much time has elapsed or how far we’ve traveled.” - Jane Mersky Leder, Educator and Author
P
sychologists and other scientists have been studying birth order and its effect on personality traits for some time. It’s a matter of fascination to many of us just as horoscopes are. Studies suggest distinct differences between first born, second born and third born children. So much so are the alleged differences that they even affect IQ and income in adult life. It’s enough to stand up and take notice. Birth Order... Continued on Page 2

However, a bit of a caution – birth order is not a definite recipe for certain personality traits. Length of time between birth of siblings, number of children in the family, environment and other factors play a significant role. Fortunately, we’re not just cookie-cutter kids. Nonetheless, it’s still interesting to see where we and our siblings might fall on the personality curve.

• Firstborns have a slightly higher IQ than their younger siblings; middle children have the next higher and youngest have the lowest. • Firstborns tend to be taller and larger than younger siblings. • Younger siblings are less likely to be vaccinated than firstborns and middle children. • In personality tests, firstborns score higher in having a sense of responsibility and followthrough; younger siblings score higher in agreeableness or the ability to get along better with others. • In chairman of the board positions, Vistage (an organization of CEO’s) found in a survey that 43% of chairmen are firstborns, 33% are middleborn and 23% are born last. • A Norwegian study found that when the firstborn in the family dies, the IQ of the second born child increases. • Greater than half of U.S. presidents have been firstborns and the majority of Nobel Prize winners are firstborns.

ALWAYS FIRST Firstborn children are thought to be high-achieving perfectionists. As noted earlier, they have been found to have higher IQ’s than their younger siblings, as well as are more likely to go to college or university and earn more money. They tend to fall into two camps – movers and shakers or caregivers.

SECOND BEST? Middle children tend to get the short end of the stick. They don’t get the attention that the firstborns enjoy, nor do they receive the attention sometimes bestowed on the “baby” of the family. But are they second best? No way! Middle children are thought to be the peacekeepers in the family and in life. They make great mediators. They tend to work a little harder to compete with their older sibling, but they can also be the one in the family to rebel and become the ‘black sheep’ in search of their individuality. Their notable traits include: • Mysterious and unpredictable • People-pleaser • Calm and can roll with the punches • Good listener and generous • Can see both sides of a problem • Easily makes friends • Flexible • Indecisive and has difficulty setting boundaries

The ‘babies’ of the family are in a unique position. Always the bottom of the family food chain, they have to develop a keener sense of creativity to gain attention. They tend to be more adventurous and wind up being the class clown or life of the party. They can also be easygoing as well as competitive just like the middle sibling. The youngest is usually less interested in academic pursuits. Their more prominent traits include: • Good sense of humor • Agreeable and easy to get along with • Participate in riskier sports; outgoing • Flexible • Rebellious (e.g., Copernicus thinking that the earth revolved around the sun – preposterous!) • Persistent • Charming and affectionate • Become easily bored, have a short attention span; can have unrealistic expectations of a life full of fun, fun, fun

PREPARE FOR THE BOOM
719.375.8831
The year is 1909. One hundred years ago.
WHAT A DIFFERENCE A CENTURY MAKES! Here are some statistics for the Year 1909 : • The average life expectancy was 47 years. • Only 14 percent of the homes had a bathtub. • Only 8 percent of the homes had a telephone. • There were only 8,000 cars and only 144 miles of paved roads. • The maximum speed limit in most cities was 10 mph.
• Canada passed a law that prohibited poor people from entering into their country for any reason.
• The American flag had 45 stars. • The population of Las Vegas , Nevada, was only 30!!!!
• The average wage in 1909 was 22 cents per hour.
• Crossword puzzles, canned beer, and ice tea hadn’t been invented yet.
• The average worker made between $200 and $400 per year ..
• There was no Mother’s Day or Father’s Day.
• A competent accountant could expect to earn $2000 per year, a dentist $2,500 per year, a veterinarian between $1,500 and $4,000 per year, and a mechanical engineer about $5,000 per year.
• Two out of every 10 adults couldn’t read or write.
• Ninety percent of all doctors had NO COLLEGE EDUCATION! Instead, they attended so-called medical schools, many of which were condemned in the press and the government as ‘substandard. ‘ • Sugar cost four cents a pound. • Eggs were fourteen cents a dozen. • Coffee was fifteen cents a pound.
G
raveyards just aren’t what they used to be. Today’s owners want everything to be flat on the ground, probably so they can easily and quickly dash through the graveyard with their lawnmowers. They don’t like those big stone markers because they are way too much work to maintain. They call this new style a “flat marker cemetery”. To be honest, I’m not that impressed.
• Five leading causes of death were: 1.. Pneumonia and influenza 2. Tuberculosis 3. Diarrhea 4. Heart disease 5. Stroke
• The tallest structure in the world was the Eiffel Tower!
• More than 95 percent of all births took place at HOME .
LAUNCH YOUR LEGACY
• Most women only washed their hair once a month, and used Borax or egg yolks for shampoo.
There’s a very old cemetery just off I-25 at historic Idaho Springs, Colorado that has some of the most interesting gravestones you’ll ever see. My wife and I stopped there one afternoon and strolled through the ancient grave markers. It was a somber but most interesting walk. I know it sounds weird, but we like graveyards. We never pass Julesburg, Colorado without taking a few moments to stop by the graveside of my paternal grandparents. You can actually see their gravestones from the Interstate if you know where to look.
• Only 6 percent of all Americans had graduated from high school.. • Marijuana, heroin, and morphine were all available over the counter at the local corner drugstores. Back then pharmacists said, ‘Heroin clears the complexion, gives buoyancy to the mind, regulates the stomach and bowels, and is, in fact, a perfect guardian of health.’ ( Shocking?) Eighteen percent of households had at least one full-time servant or domestic help.
You can learn a lot in a graveyard. Some years ago I found the gravestone of my maternal great grandfather, George Washington Merrill, in the Silver Creek,
There were about 230 reported murders in the ENTIRE ! U.S.A. !
7
But, where you are buried and what kind of headstone you have, in the final analysis, isn’t very important to me. Here’s why: the stone on your grave is not the marker of a meaningful life.
One of my favorite authors, Steven Covey writes a lot about leaving a legacy. In one of his books he suggests you imagine your funeral where four speakers are featured. One is from your family, one is a good friend, one is a member of your community and another is from your work. What would you like them to say about you? Few of us would want them to talk about what a nice house we lived in or how many really nifty toys we had in our garage. We wouldn’t want them to review our stock portfolio or even to discuss all the nice awards we had hanging on our wall back at the house. We would, however, want them to tell everyone about the kind of person we really were, that we stood for something, or did something important, or made some kind of difference while we were here. That’s the legacy that is far more important than the size of your headstone. It’s the legacy of meaning and usefulness. It’s the legacy of generations. I think it was Covey that quoted Edwin Hubbel Chapin: “Every action of our lives touches on some chord that will vibrate in eternity.” That, my friend, is the definition of a legacy. Wouldn’t you love to do something that might strike a beautiful chord that will “vibrate in eternity”? You can; launch your legacy; start today. © 2009 Ronald D. CRYSTAL IS A CHARMER!
Crystal is a sweet girl and gets along well with other cats but we are not sure if she likes dogs. Slow introductions, cat to cat, is one way to ease the new cat into another cat’s life. This doesn’t mean that both cats will become best friends over night. There, no doubt, will be spitting and hissing. Over time they should both become less and less aggressive. There is no time limit to this process. I’ve had cats ‘swat’ each other for over a year. As some of you know, cats may sneak up on one another while one cat is sleeping and just give them a swat .. just because. Sleeping dogs are not safe from being swatted either.

WET NOSE, DRY NOSE asks the adopter to give the animal a reasonable amount of time to adjust to it’s new family and environment. This is so very important to your new family member as well as your existing family members. Please visit our website at saintanimalrescue.org and as always thank you for caring. “Cats as a class, have never completely got over the snootiness caused by the fact that in ancient Egypt they were worshipped as gods.” -P.G. Wodehouse
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I read that a dog’s nose is wet when it’s healthy, and dry when it’s sick. Is it the same for cats? -- David in Columbus, Ga. DEAR DAVID: It’s a good guideline to follow for both dogs and cats, although there’s more to a nose than just wet or dry. A healthy dog or cat’s nose will be slightly moist -- although sometimes a cat’s nose will seem a little bit dry. Neither animal should react negatively to a light touch or rub on the nose. If a dog or cat’s nose is very wet, it may not be completely healthy. Conversely, if the nose is extremely dry, that’s not a great sign either. If a pet doesn’t want you to touch its nose (when it normally doesn’t have a problem with you doing it),
10
that might not be a good sign. I say “maybe” and “might” a lot, because a pet’s nose isn’t the single best measure of that pet’s health. Each pet is an individual with a different level of nose wetness or dryness. If, for example, you have a cat whose nose always feels a bit dry, but is otherwise healthy, then the cat is probably healthy. So, you have to be aware of more than just a pet’s nose when evaluating its health. Certainly, you can give it a daily check -- you’ll learn quickly what’s “normal” for your pet. But also be familiar with your pet’s usual behaviors, when it eats and sleeps, and how it interacts with other family members. Changes in behavior often indicate illness. Be familiar with how his or her coat looks -- if it becomes shaggy or chronically matted, for example, that’s abnormal. And of course, always check with the veterinarian if you’re not sure. came widely accepted as part of American cuisine. Today, Americans consume on average more than 80 pounds of tomatoes each year.
Tomatoes are low in calories and a good source of vitamins C, A and K. They’re also a very good source of molybdenum, potassium, manganese, dietary fiber, chromium and vitamin B1. In addition, tomatoes contain lycopene, which has antioxidant and cancer-preventing properties. I love using tomatoes as the “dish” for salads like this delicious shrimp salad. When you scoop out the tomato pulp, place it in a plastic bag and use it in tomato soup or pasta sauce. The tomato pulp with keep in the refrigerator for up to 3 days, or in the freezer for up to 6 months.
We have Colonel Robert Gibbon Johnson of Salem, N.J., to thank for single-handily proving to Colonial Americans that tomatoes were safe to eat. In 1808, Colonel Johnson brought tomato seeds home from Europe. He not only began growing and eating tomatoes, he offered a prize for the largest tomato grown in the area. Despite all of Colonel Johnson’s efforts, tomatoes were still thought to be poisonous and not safe for human consumption. Finally, he came up with the perfect way to prove that tomatoes were safe to eat. On Sept. 26, 1820, Colonel Johnson stood on the steps of the Salem courthouse, and in front of a crowd of 2,000, ate an entire basket of tomatoes. Many people in the crowd thought he was committing suicide. Johnson predicted, “The time will come when this delicious scarlet apple ... will form the foundation of a great garden industry and will be enjoyed as an edible food.” Word quickly spread that Colonel Johnson had suffered no ill effects from this stunt. Soon, tomatoes be-

T
he trick to making light flaky biscuits is to not over mix the dough. Only mix until the ingredients are all incorporated. The more you mix the more the gluten forms and the tougher the biscuit will become. The butter can also make the difference in the flakiness of the biscuit. The butter must be cold. Cutting the butter into the dry ingredients should be done with a pastry knife or 2 butter knives and it should look grainy like sand.

Wine Appreciation & Tasting Tips
brought to you by Dirk at The Wine Seller
MERRY MERLOT
D
eep color, medium to full body, high alcohol. and low tannin are the characteristics of wines made from the Merlot grape [mur-LO]. Merlot is the red-wine success of the 1990s. In California and around the world, its popularity has soared along with its acreage, and it seems wine lovers can’t drink enough of it. It dominates Bordeaux (its home), except for the Médoc and Graves. The aromas and flavors can be plumy or sometimes chocolatey. For many people Merlot is much easier to like than Cabernet Sauvignon because it’s less tannic. Some winemakers, however, feel that Merlot isn’t satisfactory in its own right, and thus often blend it with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, or both. Very versatile with almost all foods.

A third option is to take an antibiotic after intercourse.
DEALING WITH REPEAT BLADDER INFECTIONS DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I have a problem with bladder infections. I have been getting one every month for the past three years. I am a 49-year-old female. My doctor gives me Cipro and the infection goes away, but it returns in a month. I have tried some other antibiotics with the same result. A doctor examined my bladder with a scope and found nothing wrong. Do you have any ideas on what I could do? -- L.H. ANSWER: Recurring bladder infections plague many women. They have to do with female anatomy. The female urethra -- the tube that drains the bladder -- is much shorter than the male urethra, and it opens to the outside world in a place where there is luxuriant bacterial growth. Bacteria can ascend up the urethra to the bladder with ease. Sexual relations contribute to the problem because contact massages bacteria into the urethra. Some steps should be taken. One is a culture of your urine to see if this is the same recurring bacterium and to determine its sensitivity to antibiotics. You might have a resistant germ, one that no longer completely responds to Cipro or the other medicines you have taken. One way of handling this problem is to stay on a small dose of antibiotic daily or three times a week for a protracted period of time so that eradication of the bacterium
Cranberry juice (not cranberry cocktail) has helped many to stave off repeat bladder infections. The dose is 8 ounces a day (one glass). The booklet on urinary tract infections explains this common disorder in detail. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 1204W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery.

*** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: My teen wears flip-flops all day, every day. We live in a fairly warm climate, and he wears them even during the winter months. I don’t think this is good for his feet. Do you have any information on this? -- W.M. ANSWER: I don’t think flip-flop manufacturers intended them to be substitutes for shoes. They’re for the shower room, beach and a couple of other similar places. Researchers at Auburn University have examined flip-flop use and have found that constant wearing of them can present potential problems. The foot instinctively adapts to flip-flops to keep them on the feet. Users unconsciously take shorter steps, and their feet strike the ground at a slightly different angle than shoe wearers. When flip-flop users go back to wearing shoes, these foot mechanics persist and cause foot discomfort. Flip-flops provide no arch support and very little cushioning.

BEHAVIOR TIP OF THE WEEK BREAK THE CYCLE
H
armful eating patterns can become cyclical. The cycle begins with an event involving unpleasant emotions such as sadness, anxiety, frustration, or anger. These unpleasant feelings may then lead you to think negative thoughts about yourself. Such negative thinking then may result in coping behaviors that can harm your weight loss efforts. These behaviors may include bingeing, purging, or starving yourself. Such coping behaviors lead back to the beginning of the cycle with more unpleasant feelings and thoughts. You can break the cycle by breaking one link of the chain of events! For example if you tend to binge one day and then starve yourself the next day;
just focus on stopping the binges. This will automatically eliminate your need to starve yourself the following day. Eliminating these behaviors will help you avoid unpleasant feelings that result from bingeing and starving yourself. You can also try to break the cycle by looking for opportunities to deal with unpleasant emotional events in a healthy way. For example, you can visit with a friend when you’re sad. If you’re feeling anxious, try to relax with a soothing bath. When you’re angry, try cooling down by taking care of physical chores. Examine your unpleasant emotions and coping behaviors that have you caught up in a harmful eating cycle. Try to come up with a way to break a link in the cycle so you can get on a straight path to weight loss success! Call Diet Center® for a free consultation (719 488-3564) and let us show you how being at your goal weight doesn’t cost, it saves.

TRI-LAKES CENTER FOR THE ARTS PRESENTS
DAKOTA BLONDE
T
he Tri-Lakes Center for the Arts (TLCA) is proud to present a concert featuring Dakota Blonde. Although the lead singer, Mary Huckins, is from South Dakota, the group appears at venues across the Rocky Mountain region and has a dedicated following of “Blonde Heads.” This vibrant acoustic group plays a unique combination of folk, bluegrass, and country – with a little Celtic tinge. Their awards include winning the Walnut Valley Festival New Song Showcase in Kansas, and being a finalist in the Merlefest Chris Austin Songwriting Contest in North Carolina, and the Independent Record Label Awards. The members of Dakota Blonde are Mary Huckins, whose sweet, strong vocals are the linchpin in holding the group’s harmonies together; Don Pinnella, who plays guitar and sings harmony; and Tony Raddell, who plays acoustic bass and provides the onstage humor. All three come from musical families and their charm stems both from the music they play and from the family feeling they bring to their concerts. They have shared the stage with Nickel Creek, Firefall, and John McEuen, and played at
festivals with Emmylou Harris, David Crosby and others. KCUV Radio in Denver describes Dakota Blonde as the “sweetest acoustic sound around,” while North Carolina’s Barrett Mountain Music describes the group as “honest, warm, comfortable, fun, and utterly unique . . . the best night of music we have ever experienced.” For more information about the group visit Dakota Blonde’s website: www. dakotablonde.com. TLCA is dedicated to creating community partnerships for demonstrating, teaching, exhibiting and promoting the arts and humanities. It is an advocate for artistic growth in the community. It offers programs that benefit residents, businesses, students, artists, art lovers and all who are inspired by the arts. TLCA is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization located in Palmer Lake, CO. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) It’s a good idea to finish all incomplete tasks so that you can devote your attention to next week’s projects. The weekend could hold surprises for romantic Fernandas and Ferdinands. Your social life picks up considerably this weekend. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Someone from the past could return with an intriguing opportunity for a future project. Check into it, by all means. But don’t neglect your current responsibilities in the meantime. But it’s the best way to avoid more problems down the line. Make sure you know what you’re entitled to, what is off the table and what is negotiable before you make a decision. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A social obligation you would rather get out of could hold some surprisingly positive aspects. Why not go and see for yourself? A family member makes a curious request. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Before tackling that new project awaiting you at home or on the job, take time out for some much-deserved pampering to help lift your spirits and restore your energy levels. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Your social calendar begins to fill up more quickly than you expected. And that’s great. You deserve to enjoy some good fun after so much time spent on serious matters. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A domestic situation continues to improve, thanks to all the tender, loving concern you’ve shown. A colleague makes a questionable move that you might want to check out sooner rather than later. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A sudden turn in a romantic relationship calls for both a rational and passionate response. Keep the love level high, but also find out why the problem arose in the first place. BORN THIS WEEK: You often set high standards for others. But to your credit, you set the same expectations for yourself. (c) 2009 King Features Synd., Inc.

A SEMINAR FOR EVERYONE WHO
GET EDUCATED ABOUT INVESTING
ISN’T A FAN OF TAXES You’re Invited ...
Provided by Adam Grayson of EdwardJones Investments
Tax time doesn’t have to be something you dread. When you own tax-free investments, you get to keep more of what you earn instead of signing it over to the IRS.
I
f you have children at home, you’re no doubt aware that it’s the traditional back-to-school time. But even if your days of parent-teacher conferences are in the past, or even in the future, you can still find a place in your life for education — and you might want to start by educating yourself about investing.
To learn how certain investments can deliver tax-free income and possibly keep you in a lower tax bracket, join us for our free Tax-free Investing seminar. It’s your opportunity to find bonds and funds designed to help you get ahead without the government holding you back. These bonds and funds may be subject to state, local or the alternative minimum tax (AMT).
To get the most out of your investment education, ask yourself these questions:
Prospectuses are available for any of the mutual funds offered. The prospectus contains more complete information including fees, charges and expenses as well as other important information that should be carefully considered. Your financial advisor can provide you with a prospectus which should be read carefully before you invest or send money.
What are my goals? Your financial goals should drive your investment decisions. You probably have short-term goals, such as making a down payment on a home or paying for a vacation, and long-term goals, such as saving for your children’s college education or building resources for your retirement. Once you’ve identified your goals, you can create an investment strategy to help achieve them.
Seating is limited, so reserve your place today. Refreshment Dinner will beoptions served. Date ................. Tuesday, September 29, 2009 Time ................. 6 p.m. Location....... Bella Panini Restaurant, Palmer Lake, CO
What is my risk tolerance? Selfawareness is important in every aspect of life — including your approach to investing. As you create your investment portfolio, you need to understand your own views on risk. Would you consider yourself an aggressive investor — that is, someone who can accept a relatively higher degree of investment risk in exchange for potentially higher returns? Or are you a more conservative investor — someone who is willing to take lower returns in exchange for lower potential risk? Or perhaps you’re a moderate investor, less risk-averse than some but less aggressive than others. However you’d characterize yourself, it’s essential that you factor in your risk tolerance when choosing investments. Otherwise, you’ll likely end up causing yourself needless worry over your investment

IT’S TIME TO MAKE THE WORLD
A BETTER PLACE
portfolio’s performance. When should I make changes to my investments? Once you’ve built an investment portfolio, you shouldn’t leave it on “autopilot.” Over time, you most likely will need to add new investments or sell others. However, try to avoid selling quality investments just because their share price has dropped — they may still have good long-term prospects. In general, you should sell an investment under certain circumstances. For example, if your goals have changed, you may find the need to sell some investments and purchase others. You may decide to sell an investment if it’s no longer what it was when you purchased it. For example, maybe you’ve invested in a company whose products are less competitive than they once were, or perhaps the company belongs to an industry now in decline. And finally, if your portfolio has become “overweighted” with certain types of investments, you may decide to sell some of them to bring your holdings back into balance, based on your goals, risk tolerance and time horizon. Whom should I consult for help? You can do a lot to educate yourself about investing — but when it comes to making the right choices for your future, you may need help. A professional financial advisor who is familiar with your family situation, short- and long-term goals and investment preferences can help you build and maintain a portfolio that can help meet your needs. The investment world can be complex, so the more knowledge you have on your side, the better off you’ll be. Take the time to learn as much as you can about investing. It’s an education that can pay off in the long run. This article was written by Edward Jones for use by your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor. For additional information, contact:

THE LAW ACCORDING TO STEVENS by Lisa Welch Stevens, Attorney at Law P.C.
YOUR HOME PHONE IS YOURS, AND YOURS ALONE TO USE © January, 2008, Lisa Welch Stevens, Esq.
T
he old English expression, “a man’s home is his castle”, has its roots in very ancient property law. As first year law students are often told by their Property professors, the right of property is not a single right, but a bundle of rights, like a bundle of sticks. And one of the most important of those “sticks” is the right of exclusion. If you own a piece of property, you have the right to exclude all others from accessing or using that property for their own benefit, unless you give them permission otherwise. Until passage of the Colorado No-Call law and, subsequently, the federal No-Call law, that right of exclusion did not extend to third parties accessing you, in your “castle”, through unsolicited calls to you using, for their benefit, your home telephone. The No Call laws gave first residential, and then wireless, telephone subscribers the right to choose to exclude telemarketers from doing so. And telemarketers who do so face statutory penalties. Pursuant to Colorado Revised Statutes §6-1-904, it is illegal for any person or entity to make or cause to be made any telephone solicitation to the telephone number of any residential or wireless telephone subscriber in Colorado who has added his telephone number and zip code to the Colorado no-call list. However, some telemarketers ignore this proscription, relying on the fact that most people will not bother to prosecute the matter. A client of mine, a realtor, works out of his home, as many realtors and other business people do. In the course of working from his home office, he sometimes
VOLUNTEER WHILE UNEMPLOYED
J
ob hunting when unemployed involves more than just sitting in front of a computer, sending off resumes and waiting for the phone to ring -or at least it should. Sitting at home day after day isn’t good for you -- or your job hunt. Thousands of unemployed are taking their employment break as an opportunity to volunteer -- yes, work for free -- and are enjoying the benefits it can bring. The benefits of volunteering include: • Giving you specifics to cover any gaps in your work
history. Your future employer will appreciate the fact that you didn’t sit around, that you showed initiative and tried new things. • Free education and experience. Depending where you volunteer, you could have the opportunity to learn new money, office and people skills, and build the ones you already have. It all goes on your resume. • Widened horizons. Volunteering in an industry that’s different from your usual work could open your eyes to the possibilities in other fields. Perhaps you’ll aim your sights in another direction, or expand the direction you’re going in now. Perhaps you’ll decide that the new industry is for you and you’ll go back to school. • Being hired. You could end up being hired by the very place where you volunteer. • Making contacts. You never know who has what information. The right word to the right person could start a chain of events that leads you to a permanent job. It only takes one key contact to find you that job, and you don’t know who that contact is. The more people you come in contact with during the course of

uses, and gives out to others to use, his residential telephone number. Under Colorado regulations and Qwest policy, one cannot obtain a business number designation for a telephone located in a residence. If the location where the phone line is physically located has kitchen and bedroom facilities, it is automatically classified as a residential subscriber line. The NoCall prohibition is based on the classification of the telephone line by Qwest: if residential, it is protected; if business, it is not protected. My client received numerous telephone solicitations from certain companies at his residential telephone number. He filed suit against at least two of the companies under the Colorado No Call law, seeking the statutory damages per incident, plus attorney’ fees and costs. One case was tried in county court, the other in civil court. We lost at the trial court level in each case, the county and district courts finding that by using a residential telephone line for mixed personal and business use, the subscriber removes that residential line from the protections of the Colorado No Call Act. However, we appealed both decisions, one to the Colorado Court of Appeals, and the other to the Colorado Supreme Court. The issue was what is called a “matter of first impression” for the Colorado appellate courts, meaning there was no Colorado law on the issue. In each case, the Colorado Court of Appeals and the Colorado Supreme Court, respectively, found in our favor, stating that the fact that someone uses their home telephone number for both personal and business use does not mean they lose the protection of the Colorado No Call Act, barring third parties from using their home telephone to access them in the privacy of their own homes for those third parties’ commercial benefit. (See Holcomb v. Jan-Pro Cleaning Systems of Southern Colorado, ____ P.3d _____, 2007 WL: 4373983 (Colo. 2007); Holcomb v. Steven D. Smith, Inc., 170 P.3d 815 (Colo.App. 2007).) In your “castle”, you have the right to use your home telephone as you see fit, without losing your right to bar others from using it themselves for their benefit, rather than yours. a day, the wider your network will expand. Where should you volunteer? Try museums, the Humane Society, hospitals, food banks, community gardens and parks, or after-school programs -- the list of possibilities is long. Nonprofits need help more than ever as their funding has been cut in many cases, and they’re struggling. Volunteers are needed for jobs such as grant writer, bookkeeper, fundraiser, greeter in all types of settings, marketing and public relations, museum docent, meal delivery to shut-ins, translator, tour guide and much more. The benefits to you, however, are the biggest of all. Keeping your spirits up and staying positive is important to your long-term job hunt. 488-0986 newspaper in Douglas County. As the publisher I saw a need to train people on how to report and write news about their local communities. Several years ago I met Susan Carson Cormier at a networking event in Parker. Over the months and years I got to know her, not only as the owner of a Parker business, but also as a journalist. Susan has had more than a decade of experience in the news business and has been working as a citizen journalist since 2005. She was precisely what (who) I needed to create the training programs for citizen journalists. Susan now serves as the Head Coach of the NACJ. She has written and produced six training webinars for our members that are now posted on our website (www.NACJ.us). My job in the organization is to serve as Catalyst in Chief. This means I’m in charge of recruiting, inspiring and motivating citizen journalists. Susan and I see the NACJ as an association of average citizens from across the nation and around the world that are bound together by their commitment to citizen journalism. By providing a variety of webinars that can be taken at members’ leisure, we will establish a new breed of citizen journalists who are proficient at collecting, researching, reporting and disseminating news and information to their communities. The NACJ welcomes all types of
A citizen journalist can be a seventh grader who likes to write about science, a mom who wants to write about her kid’s sporting events, or a government official or employee who wants to enlighten and inform the public they serve. The NACJ has three levels of membership. The first – an intern reporter – is free. The other two levels – cub reporter and beat reporter – give members the opportunity to take training webinars and do homework assignments to learn the art and craft of journalism. Modest fees are required to pay for their membership and university-level training. But you can join as an intern reporter for free. I would like to personally invite you to subscribe to Citizen Journalist Post, the twice-a-month E-zine of the National Association of Citizen Journalists so you can keep track of what is happening in the exciting and ever-expanding world of

HOW TO GET A LOAN 1. Find the right lender for YOU! Ask friends, family, coworkers, or your favorite local real estate agent for referrals. 2. Fill out a loan application. Seriously…..trust me….this is NOT a scary experience! You tell the lender your REAL information…..you get a REAL home price range, and there's NO obligation to purchase or to use that particular Loan Officer! THAT is sooooo risk free that EVERYONE should
take advantage of this opportunity. 3. Get an estimate of closing costs from the lender you choose. By law, the lender is required to provide this statement to you within three days of receiving the loan application. Make sure to ask what type of loan program your lender has selected for you, including the rates, terms and any special information, such as prepayment penalties. 4. Compare costs, fees
and terms of loans if you are working with more than one lender. 5. (Too many inquiries can make it look as if you are shopping for credit - which is a red flag for some lenders. When you do select a lender, you may have to explain in writing why there are other inquiries on your credit report.) 6. Consider lowering your interest rate by paying more points. The relationship of interest rate to points paid is an inverse one; the more points you pay, the lower the interest rate. A point is 1 percent of the loan amount. 7. Provide required documentation. Don't wimp out now! The fear of getting paperwork together is a wimpy excuse. Just DO IT! 8. Pay any up-front fees. Sometimes the lender requires that the appraisal or credit report be paid at the beginning. Approximate fee are: Appraisal $350 max. Credit Report $35 max. Negotiate that these fees be paid at closing, and then negotiate with your real estate agent that the seller pay these closing cost fees.
24
9. Review loan papers. A few days prior to closing, loan papers will be ready for your review. Make sure the loan matches the original quote you were given. Talk to your real estate agent and work together to make sure your lender sticks to their numbers. 10. Sign your loan papers and deposit your down payment funds into your account four to six days prior to closing. 11. Bring a cashier's check for the down payment to the title company. The lender will send the title company a check for the loan amount. 12. Once the transaction closes and you have signed off on all paperwork, you received a copy of the deed and a set of keys, you own the home!
