en, women and dogs will line up in Anchorage, Alaska, March 8 to begin what some have deemed the “last great race on earth:” the Iditarod – the largest dog sled race in the world. They call them “mushers” and along with their dogs – 12 to 16 on each team – they will cover 1,150 miles of beautiful yet challenging terrain, from mountain ranges to dense forests, to frozen tundra to icy rivers to coastlines stirred by heavy wind gusts. Teams will make the trek in 10 to 17 days amidst below zero temperatures and extended periods of darkness.

HONORING THE FOREFATHERS… AND FOREDOGS In the early 1900s, the Iditarod Trail, now designated a national historic trail, was the only thoroughfare in the winter from Alaska’s coastal towns to interior towns. Mushers and their sled dogs were used to run mail, supplies and gold from village to village. Priests, judges and doctors also jumped on board to visit those who needed their services.

In 1925, the city of Nome was plagued by a diphtheria epidemic. The mushers and their sled dogs became heroes – some legends – as they carried much needed serum to Nome. As the gold mining industry slowed, there was less activity on the Iditarod Trail. In the late 1920s, the airplane became the mode of transportation for mail and supplies. And the sled dog teams disappeared with the advent of the snowmobile.

rating the history of Alaska’s sled dog teams would bring awareness to the trail and highlight some of the heroic efforts of both dog and man.

• Carl Huntington won the 1974 race with the slowest winning time – 20 days, 15 hours, 2 minutes. • Dick Mackey and Rick Swenson still hold the title for the closest finish. Mackey was 1 second ahead of Swenson – 14 days, 18 hours, 52 minutes and 24 seconds. The nose of the lead dog determined the winner. • The largest number of mushers to finish a single race: 77 in 2004. • Rick Swenson is the only musher to win the Iditarod five times in three different decades – 1980s, 1990s and 2000s. • Susan Butcher won the Iditarod four times before retiring to have children. She died of leukemia in August 2006, leaving behind her husband and two children. • The youngest musher to run the race was Dallas Seavey, age 18. He ran in 2005. The oldest musher to complete the race is Col. Norman Vaughan – at 88 years. • Lucky number? Rick Mackey became the only son of a winner to place first when he won the 1983 Iditarod. His father, Dick Mackey, had won in 1978. Dick’s other son, Lance, matched his father and brother when he won in 2007. All three Mackeys – father and sons – wore bib No. 13 when they won, and all three placed first in their sixth Iditarod race. Lance Mackey also won the race in 2008 and 2009 and is a favorite this year.

Dorothy Paige enlisted an active musher – Joe Redington Sr. – to help promote the idea of a sled dog race on the Iditarod Trail. In 1967, the Aurora Dog Mushers Club and others cleared the overgrowth on the first 9 miles of the trail for the firstever “short” race. Redington donated a 1-acre parcel of land as a fundraiser to help with a purse of $25,000 for that initial race. The race covered 27 miles, and Alaskans from all over participated, as well as two teams from Massachusetts. Isaac Okleasik from Teller, Alaska, won with a team of large working dogs.

In 1973, the race was lengthened to 1,000 miles, starting in Anchorage and ending in Nome. Many said the teams would be greatly hindered by Alaska’s wilderness, making it impossible to go the distance. But 22 mushers proved them wrong and finished that year. To date, more than 400 mushers have completed the race.

WHAT’S A MUSHER? Mushing describes a sport or transportation method using dogs and sleds and is thought to come from the French word “marche,” which means “go” or “run.” From French to slang, “mush” was a word used to command the sled dogs at the beginning of the race. “Hike” is more commonly used today.

THE DOGS Alaskan Huskies have been the predominant sled dog of the Iditarod. The Alaskan Husky is not AKC registered; thus, a number of mongrels or mutts have been labeled as a husky. Iditarod race officials were concerned that not all of those “Alaskan Huskies” fit the profile of a sled dog. Instead of defining the Alaskan Husky, officials established criteria for all canine Iditarod team members. The Iditarod... Continued on Page 3

The mushers are men and women who steer the sled dog teams. Alaska natives introduced the concept of sled dog teams. The native people also bred dogs for the purpose of transport. The Malemiut Inupiat people of the Seward Peninsula in Alaska developed a species favorite: the Malamute. Modern-day mushers come from all walks of life: fisherman, lawyers, doctors, artists – and many countries – Canada, Switzerland and France among them.

• In 1986, Susan Butcher broke Rick Swanson’s 1981 record after she completed the race in 11 days, 15 hours and 6 minutes. Butcher broke her own record in 1987, finishing in 11 days, 2 hours and 5 minutes. In 1990, Butcher again broke a record, finishing in 11 days, 1 hour and 53 minutes. • In 1990, Jeff King broke all records when he finished the race in 10 days, 15 hours and 38 minutes. In 1994, Buser beat that record with 10 days, 13 hours and 2 minutes. • In 1995, Doug Swindley of Montana became the first winner from a state other than Alaska and also broke the record as he finished in 9 days, 2 hours and 42 minutes. • Martin Buser rose again in 2002, completing the Iditarod in 8 days, 22 hours and 46 minutes.

MEASURES FOR MUTTS • All dogs must “demonstrate a willingness” to be harnessed. They must also demonstrate a desire to participate. How they interview for the job was not addressed! • All dogs must be vaccinated and dewormed. • All dogs must be able to withstand environmental extremes as specified by race officials. • Dogs must be able to pass a pre-race physical by a veterinarian with knowledge of sled dogs. A number of health issues are evaluated through protocols endorsed by Iditarod veterinarians. The majority of sled dogs are at least 75 lbs. In other words, the Dachshund, the Beagle, the Chinese Crested hairless are examples of dogs not to expect at the Iditarod.

DOG … GONE New sled dogs cannot be added once the race begins. The musher has to finish with the original dogs; however, any one of the dogs can be dropped from the race if necessary. The dropouts are flown back to Anchorage via small planes – not sleds.

short leashes for most of their lives, others forced to carry heavy loads in preparation for the Iditarod. Injuries to dogs during the race include spinal injuries, bone fractures, sore and wounded paws, ruptured tendon sheaths, torn muscles, sore joints, stress and dehydration – and freezing to death. One dog died of an ulcer. On average, the SDAC states that 50 percent of all dogs that begin the race do not make it across the finish line.

DOGGED BUT STILL POPULAR Thousands of people, journalists and former and wannabe mushers will converge on Alaska in March. Seventy-one entrants are scheduled for this year’s Iditarod. Thirty-three are from Alaska, nine from other states and seven from abroad. Besides Mackey, past winners participating this year include Rick Swenson, Jeff King and Martin Buser. From last year’s Iditarod, 19 of the top 20 finishers will return, and 23 rookies are entered in Iditarod XXXVIII.

THE TERMINOLOGY Mushers and team members have their own language. It’s been said the lead dog and the musher communicate through ESP.

During the race, the dogs are closely guarded for any problems. The mushers must make sure they journal their dogs’ progress. There are checkpoints where veterinarians peruse the doggy diaries and examine the dogs. The dogs also are subject to random drug testing.

Swing Dog: the dog running directly behind the lead dog; also identified as right or left swing dog; this dog helps swing the team in the turns or curves

The Sled Dog Action Coalition believes the Iditarod violates animal cruelty laws defined in 38 states and the District of Columbia. Alaska’s anti-cruelty stance on “overworking or overdriving” laws is more lax, according to the SDAC. They maintain that no other state could get away with the Iditarod. According to the SDAC, 142 dogs have died in the later years of the Iditarod. In early years, the deaths were not recorded. The SDAC also defies the way sled dogs are raised – some outdoors on

As the basis and primary material, wool is the most resilient, comfortable and durable material to use in these rugs. To add variations of color, texture and design, silk is often used as a “highlight” accent. Another interesting and durable material that is used for textural and color variation is the fiber called “Allo,” or Himalayan Nettle plant. Oriental rugs often incorporate hand-dyeing and hand-carding as part of the weaving process.

TAI YI SOUL BLOCK

Do you ever feel medication may not be enough?

Or,

I

s it easy for you or someone you know to create excuses for the ‘way you/they are’, while at the same time, the choices and patterns create pain? It can be easy for the mind to play games and to trick one into believing nothing will change for the positive and ‘this’ is just the way it is. That type of excuse can create a block in creativity and can create a negative ego. Negative ego is another expression for fear. A negative ego is where one boasts he or she is better than another. A negative ego can also create lies and manipulation in order to keep the mask up that ‘life is great’, when in fact, there is anger, depression, and/or fear. When individuals have blocked creativity, they will also try to copy others’ creativity. They will look for what other’s are doing within the work environment and/or home environment or in regards to abilities, and say “I want that…I will do what they are doing and get the same outcome”, not realizing other factors involved. The intent is the building block to the outcome. When one tries to create something with the intent of just copying what someone else has or has done, the outcome will create pain. The other side is if one attempts to create a new project/relationship/income/status/ work with the intent of using one’s own creativity, the outcome can be very positive. Tai Yi can assist ones with this difficulty if the person has recognized it and is ready to find and express their own creativity.

Get preapproved for a mortgage. Financing investment property is different from residential property in that it requires a much larger down payment.

BEFORE you go out looking at Properties, these are some things to consider: Choose the kind of property you want. Single-family homes are less expensive than apartment buildings, but generate less income. On the other hand, apartment buildings can require more upkeep. Assess your financial goals. Do you need a steady stream of income from your rental? Do you plan on re-selling the property for a profit in a couple of years? Consider what improvements, if any, you may be willing to make. Buying a fixer-upper will be less expensive than a property in pristine condition, but you can go broke bringing a property up to rentable condition. Before you buy, get cost estimates for all necessary fixes. Decide if you want to do maintenance yourself. If you have the skills, equipment and temperament to deal with upset tenants and a backed up toilet at 2 a.m., fine. If you plan on hiring a property manager, add about 5 percent of gross income into your calculations. Consider being a resident landlord by purchasing a multiunit property and living in one apartment. In many cases, the income from the other unit(s) will cover

Determine what a competitive rental rate is for your property by reviewing area apartment listings and by personally visiting units available in the neighborhood. Search past records for vacancy rates over the last five to ten years as well as at present. If the building is occupied, find out how long the tenants have lived at the property. Long-term residents are valuable, but may also have been signed on at a lower rental rate.

DO YOU HAVE CHANGE FOR A PENNY?

T

ake a moment to stand back and look at yourself from a distance. Do you see yourself as part of the same world that changes a caterpillar into a butterfly or a forest fire into an opportunity for new growth? The truth is, we are all part of an ever-changing world. I often reflect on a story about a little ant that had no idea he lived on the back of an elephant. Then one day a huge dust storm blew the little ant from the rear of the elephant to its head. When the little ant discovered the true nature of his existence—living on the back of an elephant in an ant colony controlled by a queen— he decided then and there to make a change. He would guide the elephant towards his chosen destiny, a new and better place of his own creation. How often do we have the courage to accept the challenge of change? To make that difficult pilgrimage toward the realization of our destined happiness, abundance and peace? As the little ant, I have taken action to physically and spiritually move my “elephant” towards my destiny. Knowing that change is gradual, I

10

820 Village Center Dr. Colorado Springs, CO (719) 260-2387

have planned my journey in 120-day intervals, rewarding me daily with a penny that keeps me motivated to stay the course. As I make my pilgrimage I sometimes let my old mental tape play, “that’s the way life is.” When negative thoughts try to move in, I hold that day’s penny tightly and tell myself that change doesn’t happen overnight. There will be setbacks and there will be disappointments. But I can keep moving forward on my journey by simply stilling myself in the moment and visualizing on what’s before me. In this way I can “re-view” and re-think a sequence of events to uncover all the possibilities it holds—and all the connections to the right people at the right time with right ideas to guide me in the direction of change. As the little ant, the transmutating caterpillar, and the new life that springs from a forest fire, I’ll happily dust myself off and step into the oasis of happiness, abundance and peace that can come with the winds of change… and a handful of promising pennies. SNIPPETZ® HEALTH AND WELLNESS

FIVE SECRETS TO FINALLY ACHIEVING THE WEIGHT LOSS, HEALTH AND FITNESS RESULTS YOU WANT...

L

ast week I exposed the Five Biggest Weight Loss and Fitness Myths many weight loss and fitness companies don’t want you to know. We discussed why gimmicks being touted as a magical cure to build muscle, lose weight and burn belly fat are advertising campaigns that help companies, not you, succeed - and they make huge profits at your expense! The real truth is that most of the products being peddled today do not work long term, and the companies selling these products are not always experts in health and fitness... they are experts in marketing in a multi-billion dollar industry. And they will continue to market in this industry until more and more people understand there is much more to health and fitness than magic. If you are sick and tired of being led to believe that it’s your fault when the junk they push doesn’t work, then read on. What I have to reveal could be the most important, factual five secrets to fitness and weight loss you have ever read. It has help me and I know it can help you too! 1. Make a Commitment to Your Exercise Program: Take out a calendar right now and mark off three days this week and next that you will commit to exercise. Write down an affirmation statement under each day. “I will exercise for 30 - 40 minutes today.” “I will eat four to five small, healthy meals and commit to at least 2 days per week to resistance (strength) training.” “I will not give into fad diets or a special machine that will solve all of my problems.” Making this type of personal commitment to exercise is a very powerful tool for success. Allowing time to rest after a stressful day is also very powerful, but try not to give in to the couch-potato theme. A consistent commitment is the only way you will get consistent results. 2. Enlist in Advice from a Fitness Professional: Almost every self-help book every written talks about the critical importance of having someone you can trust, a mentor, coach or fitness professional, help you get started on your program. It is inevitable that you will come up against hard times on your path to getting fit. A professional can guide, motivate, teach, educate, and support you so that you can easily and rapidly overcome hurdles. A fitness professional is critical to systemizing your exercise program for maximum results and assisting you in heightening your motivation and increasing your commitment. They will become your objective feedback system, helping you see, understand and correct problems that interfere with your

progress. Exercise and nutrition are bona fide sciences. Learning everything you can while you can. 3. Progression: Progression is gradually increasing the duration, frequency, amount of weight lifted, or types of activities you are doing on an on-going basis. Muscles get stronger when exposed to an increased demand. Endurance increases as intensity rises. Doing the same workouts over and over without progression could actually decrease overall fitness. Thus the term “plateau.” If you want to maximize results, you must learn how to progressively improve and fine-tune your efforts on a regular basis. 4. Versatility: The secret of versatility in fitness is the ability to exercise efficiently and effectively anywhere, anytime - with or without the use of external equipment or another person involved. Versatility is having complete control over what you need to do (not what others want you to do) to get the results you wish to achieve. Versatility in fitness means having the ability to adapt (being flexible) to situations that may deter you from a workout. It is probably the hardest thing to overcome when people are pulling at you in all different directions, or when the weather isn’t cooperating and you can’t make it to the gym. But if you are ingenious, I am sure you can come up with many ways to be active at home. Walk, clean out the garage, mow the lawn, shovel snow or plug in a home exercise video. Be versatile! Don’t give in. 5. Accountability: This is very interesting! There was a study conducted at Virginia Polytechnic University on the human nature of accountability to exercise when individuals have a mentor vs. when they do not. Researchers divided people who were in a 24-week walking program into two groups. Every week, each and every person in one of the groups received a phone call from their fitness trainer / coach asking how their exercise program was going. The other group received no contact at all until the end of the program. After 24 weeks, 45% of the individuals who received a weekly call were still walking regularly compared with only 2% of the people who received no contact during the 24 weeks. The results show that weekly accountability increased the likelihood of sticking to an exercise program by 2,200% (45% / 2%). If you do not have a motivator, someone who can help you stay on track, this may be one of the most resourceful investments that you can make. Whether it be a friend, a loved one or professional trainer. Find someone who will help you stay accountable to yourself.

new study has shown that we seniors take in more information from the environment. Researchers call it “hyper-encoding, when we notice more of what’s going on around us and merge it with other information we’re getting at the same time. And we’re 30 percent better at it than our younger counterparts. Here’s an example: Let’s say you’re with your daughter talking to a friend, Mr. Jones, on the street, listening to what he’s saying. Not only do you listen to him, but you also notice that he’s wearing a red tie and a blue shirt. Later you say to your daughter, “I’d like to buy your father a shirt like Mr. Jones was wearing. To which your daughter will likely reply: “What shirt? I didn’t notice it. Not only that, but if you happen to spot that same shirt in a store, you’re more likely to remember where you first saw it.

On the other hand, this reduced ability to filter out extraneous information can explain why many of us find television commercials so annoying. Not only do we remember the content of the show we’re watching, but we can also recall the commercial information, repeated over and over.

We’re good at problem solving, likely because of past experience. We take the parts and pieces and put them together in ways that our younger counterparts don’t. We tend to get good grades in classes we take, likely because we remember old information and tie it to the new.

Does this make us wiser? Perhaps. I suspect we’re better at making decisions because we’ve noticed so much more around us over time. We understand cause and effect because we’ve witnessed events and taken in information, and when new information is presented, we can tie it to the previous events we’ve seen.

• It was British journalist Jeremy Campbell who made the following sage observation: “Computers are good at swift, accurate computation and at storing great masses of information. The brain, on the other hand, is not as efficient a number cruncher and its memory is often highly fallible; a basic inexactness is built into its design. The brain’s strong point is its flexibility.” • In 1911, it became illegal in China to wear a pigtail. • One of Ernest Hemingway’s early English teachers claimed that the future Nobel Prize winner would “never learn to write.” • More from the files of hangover cures from around the world: In Japan, pickled plums are reputed to ease the morning-after ails; in Italy, it’s (quite sensibly) coffee. The Chinese drink strong green tea, while in

the Netherlands it’s the hair of the dog -- the Dutch advocate beer as a remedy. Danes eat salt, while Mexicans eat shrimp (I’ll take the Mexican remedy any day). Perhaps the oddest remedy is practiced in Russia: Sufferers there head to the sauna, where they proceed to whip out the toxins with leafy birch branches. No word on what they do in winter, when the birches are, presumably, leafless.

S

ummer time is here and it is time for cookouts and picnics. Deviled eggs are always a popular item on the list of accompaniments. I am a big fan of the flavor of the mustard with a good garlicky dill pickle so the flavor is strong. Feel free to cut back on mustard or pickle. I always use real mayonnaise but using a salad dressing that is sweet will cut the tartness. Using a spicy mustard will add some zing to the eggs. I like to gar-

nish them with a sprig of fresh dill but the top of the celery works well to with a little chopped dill.

CLOSED FOR THE SEASON WE WILL REOPEN IN MARCH Please Stay Tuned for the Announcement!!

Eggs are one of those perfect foods. They are full of protein and other great nutrients. …But be careful because the yolks also have fat and cholesterol, which are not so healthy. For hard-boiled eggs place in a saucepan with enough water to cover eggs and boil for about 40 minutes.

The classic 1979 made-for-TV movie starring Kurt Russell is finally being released on DVD. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Financial matters could continue to be a problem until you’re able to straighten out some of the more pesky situations. Once that happens, the rest should be easier to unsnarl. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Family matters once again take center stage, and should be dealt with competently and quickly. And, again, insist on others taking on their fair share of the responsibilities. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Your creative pursuits seem to be running into a roadblock. But rather than blame outside factors, look within to see if you might be holding back your efforts for some reason. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Keep that keen Cat’s Eye focused on relevant aspects of this new situation in your life. Don’t be distracted by trivial matters. You need the pertinent facts before making a decision. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) As much as you prefer doing things on your own, continue to accept help if you still need to resolve the problem affecting your project. Some cheerful news is about to come your way.

SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Regarding your workplace suggestions, be prepared to produce the facts to counter reactions from skeptics who feel your approach is unreasonable or even impossible. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Savvy Sagittarians will look for work-related answers on their own rather than rely on unproved assumptions. It might take more time to do so, but the payoff is worth it. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Your aspects continue to favor family issues, with special emphasis this week on changes in and around your home. Get everyone to suggest what he or she would like to see done. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A matter you thought had been settled might still produce surprises. Best advice: Continue to gather facts to bolster your position just in case you need to produce them quickly. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) While your instincts are usually right when discerning ‘twixt truth and deception, you could benefit from doing more research on the new “prospect” that you’ve been pitched. BORN THIS WEEK: Your wisdom is only matched by your generosity, making you the sort of friend everyone hopes to have. (c) 2010 King Features Synd., Inc.

f you’re like many people, you may pay a lot of attention to the day-to-day price movements of your investments. But to create and maintain an effective investment strategy, you also need to look at the “big picture” — specifically, the economic and market forces that can affect your investments’ performance. And one of those factors is inflation.

Of course, inflation has been fairly tame lately. In fact, some consumer prices fell through much of 2009, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Will the mild inflation environment continue? It’s risky to try to predict the course of any economic development. Yet some key signs point to continued low inflation. For one thing, unemployment remains stubbornly high. Fewer people working means fewer people spending, which lowers the demand for goods and services. Also, we are currently not producing anywhere near as much as we could, given our productive capacity, according to the Federal Reserve (Fed). When this gap exists, the economy can typically expand without triggering higher inflation.

If inflation does remain low for the near term, the Fed is unlikely to raise shortterm interest rates significantly; it typically raises rates in an effort to “cool down” an overheated economy. Consequently, if inflation stays low, you may be looking at continued low interest rates, at least for a while. This would affect all types of investments, but it’s especially relevant to fixed-income vehicles, such as bonds.

Member SIPC

Assuming short-term rates stay low for a while, what opportunities should you consider for your bonds? For one thing, you may want to expand your holdings

IT’S TIME TO MAKE THE WORLD

A BETTER PLACE

beyond short-term bonds; longer-term bonds usually offer higher interest rates as compensation for inflation risk, which increases over time. If interest rates do rise, however, the value of existing bonds tends to fall; no one will pay you the face value of your bond when newer ones are issued at higher rates. But because they have a long future stream of interest payments that wouldn’t keep up with current rates, long-term bonds typically adjust more than short-term ones. To protect yourself against interest rate risk — the risk that your bonds will lose value if rates rise — you may want to consider building a “ladder” containing bonds of varying maturities. When rates rise, you might be able to reinvest the proceeds of your short-term bonds into new ones that carry the higher rates. And if rates fall, you’ll still collect larger interest payments from your longer-term bonds — which would also typically fetch a premium price if you needed to sell them before they matured. Keep in mind, though, that while a bond ladder may help protect you somewhat against interest rate risk, you need to consider other factors, such as credit risk — the risk that the bond issuer will default or be unable to make principal or interest payments — and market risk — the risk that you could lose some or all of your principal as the value of your bonds fluctuates. You can help combat these risks by considering quality, investment-grade bonds. If it’s suitable for your investment objectives, risk tolerance and financial circumstances, a bond ladder may help you prepare for changes in inflation and interest rates. And by being prepared, you can avoid negative behaviors, such as hasty decisions and excessive trading, while you position your portfolio to help achieve your longterm goals. Systematic investing does not guarantee a profit or protect against loss. This article was written by Edward Jones for use by your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor. WHEN YOU CAN’T PAY YOUR TAXES

I

f you’ve already filed your tax forms for 2009, chances are you’re due a refund. If not, you could be self-employed and wondering how to get your tax obligation paid. One way to come up with the money you owe is to borrow it. Inquire about personal loans and check the interest rate. Determine the amount of your payments. Then calculate what your payments would be if you enter into an Installment Agreement with the Internal Revenue Service, where the interest will be 4 percent per year and

THE LAW ACCORDING TO STEVENS by Lisa Welch Stevens, Attorney at Law P.C.

MOTHER MAY I; WHAT GOVERNMENT PERMITS DO YOU NEED FOR YOUR SMALL BUSINESS? © February, 2010, by Lisa Welch Stevens, Esq.,

I

f you own or operate a small business in Colorado, or are thinking about starting a business of your own, one thing you must make sure to do is to obtain any and all required governmental permits for that business. Depending upon the type of business you operate, and where you operate that business, you may be required to have no permits or a multitude of permits. First, it is important to realize that you are dealing with a variety of governments and governmental subdivisions. There is the United States government (federal), the government of the State of Colorado (state) [and the government of any other state in which you do business], the government(s) of the county/ies in which your business is located or does business, and the governments of the municipalities and/or homeowners’ associations (if any) in which your business is located or does business. Second, it is important to determine how highly regulated the type of business you operate is. For example, professional practices are highly regulated, as are transport businesses, construction businesses, and food-related businesses. Depending upon the type of business, they may be regulated by agencies: (1) of the federal government (such as the United States Department of Transportation or the Occupational Health and Safety Administration); (2) of the state government (for example, the State of Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies); (3) of county government (for example, the El Paso County Health Department); (4) by other independent boards, commissions, or state agencies (for example, attorneys are regulated by the Colorado State Supreme Court; in some states it is the state bar association that regulates attorneys); and (5) of municipalities and/or homeowners’ associations (for example, the City of Colorado Springs, or the Woodmoor Improvement Association).

the penalty for being late will be 5 percent per year. Do the same with credit cards. Run the numbers and see where you’d be better off. If possible, borrow from relatives. Chances are they’ll be more lenient about being paid back if they’re sympathetic to your situation. Also look at the equity in your house and see if there’s enough to pay your tax bill. If you can’t come up with all the money you need, at least file your return and send in what you have. If you know you’re going to have the money soon, call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040 and arrange for a short-term extension. Sometimes it’ll waive penalties, but never the interest. You also can file for a longer extension. If you want to put your tax bill on a credit card, call the IRS at 888-872-9829. Make sure you’re clear on the instructions it give you to ensure that your money is credited correctly.

The federal government requires, at a minimum, that you obtain a federal Employer Identification Number for your business, for tax purposes. For most types of businesses, that is all that is required by the federal government; businesses such as transport businesses do have other federal permit or licensing requirements. If you are doing business in any way other than as a sole proprietor doing business under your own individual name (i.e., “Joe Blow the Plumber”), you need to register your business entity and/or your trade name (also known as a fictitious name or a “d/b/a”– a “doing business as” name), with the State of Colorado Secretary of State. Unless your business is a professional services business, offering services in a profession subject to regulation by the State of Colorado, you may not be required to obtain any state licenses. However, if your business does offer professional services in a licensed profession (for example, a barber shop or beauty salon), those offering and performing those professional services and your business itself are required to obtain the requisite professional licenses from the State of Colorado (for example, a Cosmetologist License or a Shop Registration License). In addition, if your business engages in retail sales, you will need to obtain a State of Colorado Department of Revenue sales tax license. In addition, the Counties of the State of Colorado do regulate and require permits for certain food, health, animal and child-care related businesses, to name a few. Neither the State of Colorado, nor the County of El Paso, require or issue generic “business licenses” per se; however, certain municipalities do require a “generic” business license (for example, the Town of Monument or the City of Colorado Springs). This may be true even if you operate your business out of your home or truck, rather than from an office or other commercial or industrial premises. This may also be true of certain homeowner’s associations; for example, the Woodmoor Improvement Association in northwestern El Paso County requires permits for homebased businesses. In addition, certain municipalities and homeowners’ associations may completed or partially ban certain types of businesses. It is important to be aware of the necessity of verifying whether your business is required to obtain any permits, from whom it needs to obtain permits, and of what the requirements for such permits are. Obviously, this is a very complex issue that varies from business to business, and cannot be addressed in its entirety here. Please consult your legal advisor regarding the specifics of your particular situation. For additional information contact, Lisa Welch Stevens, Attorney at Law P.C. If you end up needing an Installment Agreement, you’ll need Form 9465 to make that request. Send the completed form in with your return and along with whatever money you can pay at that time. The form asks for the amount you can pay each month. Be careful when you calculate what you can actually pay. Ideally the IRS would like you to pay off your debt in 36 months, but in some cases will extend that to 60 months. The form also asks for the due date you want each month. Give yourself a few days extra to make sure your payment gets there. Within 30 days the IRS will respond to tell you whether your request is approved.
