SNIPPETZ PRESENTS AN APPLE FOR THE TEACHER
ISSUE 444 • MAY 3, 2010
by Deborah Stumpf
“A good teacher is like a candle - it consumes itself to light the way for others.” -Author Unknown
I
n ancient history, teachers were highly valued members of society – on the same level as royalty or government officials. Today, teachers could argue that their position in society is not as regal. May 2 marks the beginning of teacher appreciation week, and the question is: Are teachers given the same noble status today as they were in the past?

Early on, “learned” men like priests and prophets handed down their worldly knowledge to younger generations. Those teachers were respected and appreciated for the wisdom they had gained throughout the years. Confucius became the first-ever private teacher. Although he came from noble roots, his immediate family had fallen on hard times; and, in those days, only the rich were educated. Because Confucius had no other avenue to quench his thirst for knowledge, he went to work for a nobleman so he could accompany him on his travels and become educated to the ways of the world. He did so with vigor – so much so that he eventually became one of the most renowned teachers of all times. As a highly valued member of society, “Confucius says” became the mantra of many.
MIDDLE AGES The Roman Catholic Church accepted responsibility for teaching the sons of royalty – still the only ones being educated – in the Middle Ages. The Church designated teaching duties to monasteries or learning centers, one of which became Cambridge University. In the 17th and 18th centuries, education grew beyond royalty and training institutions; teaching theo-
Boston, Mass., was the site of the first public school in America. Leading the way for education in the U.S., Massachusetts passed a law in 1642 stating that any child who was not properly educated had to become an apprentice to a trade. America’s forefathers believed that learning was vital to the future of the country. In 1647, Massachusetts initiated the Old Deluder Satan Act, which required that towns of more than 50 families hire a reading and writing teacher. For more than 100 families in a town, a grammar school had to be established. Education in those days focused on Latin and Greek history and language, memorization and discipline. Whipping posts were set up outside the schools for disruptive students, who were tied to the posts and flogged for acting out in the classrooms. The schools were centered on boys, but “dame” schools for females were eventually organized in the kitchens of the homemaker/teacher. Because it was thought that females did not have the same intellect as males, they were only expected to learn reading and writing.

But the proportion of teachers in their 30s has significantly dropped over the years – from 37 percent (1996) to 22 percent (2005). Teachers in their 40s have decreased, too – from 44 percent to 26 percent in the same years. The proportion of teachers with 25 years or more experience has doubled.

An Apple for the Teacher... Continued from Page 3 • Teachers spend an average of 50-plus hours per week on teaching duties, including extracurricular activities. • The average salary across the country for teachers is $54,319, according to the National Education Association. Beginning teachers start at about $20,000 less, depending on location. • Seven percent of public school teachers earned less than $30,000 in 2005, while 10 percent earned more than $65,000. • The No. 1 reason that teachers go into the profession is to help young people learn and develop.
WHERE HAVE ALL THE TEACHERS GONE? Teachers are continuously adding to their skill levels and increasingly using technology to instruct their students. However, some are opting out of teaching for more lucrative opportunities and better working conditions. • About half of all teachers entering the profession leave within the first five years (National Commission on Teaching report). • More than half of new teachers (five years or less) in urban areas leave the profession within three years. • About one-quarter of math and science teachers leave the profession yearly – for retirement or another field of employment. • California, Iowa and New York face teacher shortages. In California, 18,000 teachers leave the profession each year, citing low pay and unfavorable conditions. The latter includes unreliable assistance from districts, lack of support and not enough support from students’ parents.

• New York City has had to provide housing to teachers to attract them to the Big Apple because of the high cost of living.
• Brian Williams: I signed up for an English literature course taught by a teacher named Bob Kitzin, and he turned me around. He employed the technique used by all of our great teachers. He used the germ of an idea. The excitement of learning. Personal betterment, in the right vehicle. He taught it in such a way, with such enthusiasm, excitement. He laid down that foundation in my life, and I think were it not for him, I wouldn’t have become a serious thinker in life.
• Although Iowa has recently raised teacher salaries to be in line with the rest of the country, it might not be enough, as other states raise teacher salaries. Iowa is experiencing a decline in population in small, rural areas; teacher shortages in math, science, languages and special education in those areas is a big problem. • Colorado, on the other hand, is an attractive and reasonable place to live cost wise. A Colorado teacher’s starting salary is about $35,000 and the average teacher salary is $44,439.
• Martin Sheen: “When the student is ready the teacher will appear” is an
old cliché that was certainly fulfilled in my life by three very different mentors who seemed to materialize at the most opportune times when I was young and most receptive. • Mike Wallace: I remember my first mentor. Her name was Biddy Mitchell, and she was my grammar school teacher. She instilled in me an understanding of grammar and words, and how to speak in a fairly civilized way. And I think back at what a service she did me, because she got me interested in the subject. Snippetz salutes teachers everywhere – thanks for all you do!
TEACHERS AS MENTORS Many high profile Americans have cited teachers who greatly influenced their lives. • Oprah Winfrey: One of the defining moments of my life came in the fourth grade, the year I was Mrs. Duncan’s student. What Mrs. Duncan did for me was to help me to not be afraid of being smart.

• Tom Brokaw: I never forgot Frances Morrow; she was emblematic of what I think every school teacher should be. She spotted me early on and encouraged me to read above my grade level and to be imaginative in class, but at the same time she paid attention to the others …. But I knew that I had her eye, and it gave me confidence.

ome is a place to go and recover from the daily grind, but for most mothers, home and family life is the source of stress. A mother’s day seems endless, full of demanding work schedules, caring for children, preparing family activities and more. This Mother’s Day, take a few moments to kick your feet up and truly escape from your hectic schedule by creating your own private corner, away from chaos. ESTABLISH A NO-KID-ZONE Seek out the most private corner or room of your home, whether it is the bedroom, guestroom or home office, and announce to all family members that the specified area will be off limits, ensuring that you are not disturbed. Selecting a quiet space that is far away from the high traffic areas of your home will help keep your mind focused on the present moment, not on the future and your overbooked calendar. CALMING COLORS Create a calming color palette in your private space by using cool colors that represent natural landscapes. Just like nature, these natural colors exude a sense of peace and tranquility, which will help you unwind. Popular cool colors include soothing blues, greens and violets. Incorporate flooring that will compliment your wall color. By maintaining a simple color scheme, you can avoid strong color contrasts which can be distracting. In order to create a calm feeling, mimic nature and use darker color on the floor and lighter colors on the surrounding walls. Install soft carpet, or lay down a simple area rug, but be sure to stay away from patterns because they will be too lively and busy for a tranquil space. SMOOTH FABRICS Soothe your sense of touch by banning abrasive fabrics, like polyester and wool, and opt for soft velour, cotton and chenille pillows and throwblankets. The feeling of soft smooth textures will suggest serenity.

SOFT LIGHTING When lighting your space, keep in mind that dark wall and flooring colors will tend to absorb light while the lighter colors reflect it. TAI YI FOURTH POWER
O
ccasionally, I encounter an individual who has been working on his or her healing and I see the results of that work. In one or more discussions, the person has identified negative and dysfunctional belief systems/patterns/fears-and the source of those, identified how he or she has empowered those dysfunctional patterns, identified how to make new choices, and HAS made new choices. A person who has worked and healed significantly has placed much emphasis on his or her life and has created priorities that are aligned with the heart and mind. That person understands and LIVES commitment, compassion, and passion. A person who demonstrates this level of understanding and healing has worked towards joy and peace within him or herself. The result is harmony in life and relationships. Healing takes work and the outcome is worth it. The person who is healing has identified the fact that he or she is worth it. He or she understands what a quality life is worth and works towards achieving it even if uncomfortable memories and uncomfortable understanding needs to occur. No one needs to attach him or herself to a particular religion or teaching in order to heal. However, there is a sequence of events that do need to occur to heal: search (within self), identify, understand, and resolve or let go of the
issue. Within this sequence, forgiveness of self and others many times is required, as well, in order to move forward and to let go.
FREE!
Many times, when ones have worked significantly at healing, they desire more understanding and learning. They have searched, identified, and let go of an issue and now desire more awareness of life and themselves. A Tai Yi exercise/treatment for ones who desire more understanding and healing is called Fourth Power. Fourth Power assists ones to awaken to a 4th Dimensional level of consciousness. This is for those who have healed an issue or a belief and they desire for deep search of the unknown self. It will assist in the dream state to make it profound. This treatment is in FOUR parts. It can be done between four days apart to three months apart. The optimal interval is one week apart. For ones to receive the most benefit from a treatment needs understand the following guidelines. 1. The practitioner must set the grid points (similar to acupuncture) correctly and in the correct order. 2. The practitioner must send 100% UNIVERSAL energy. 3. The person receiving the treatment needs to be accepting all of the energy. When these three points occur, the healing is very deep. All practitioners working on the public must have a sealed and signed certificate.

• In the naming of American states, there a quite a few that never quite made it. It’s interesting to speculate about the possibilities, though. For instance, if you currently reside in the state of Kentucky or parts of Tennessee, but for the whimsy of fate you could be a Transylvanian. Some people once wanted to take parts of Texas and Oklahoma to create the great state of Texlahoma (perhaps displaying a slight lack of imagination). When the Mormon church settled out west, Brigham Young petitioned to have the state of Deseret created, and the land he suggested make up the state included present-day Utah, almost all of Nevada and Arizona, a sizable chunk of California and bits of five other states. Long Island, in New York, even had designs on statehood at one time.

SONGS & STORIES CONCERT MAY 8, 2010 - 7:30 P.M.
AT THE TRI-LAKES CENTER FOR THE ARTS IN PALMER LAKE
L
egendary folk singer Jerry Burgan from the popular classic rock band, We Five, & Tholow Chan will be performing their hit show, Songs & Stories, at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 8th, at the Tri-Lakes Center for the Arts in Palmer Lake, CO. The We Five enjoyed smash success with their giant hit, “When I Woke Up This Morning.” Before Jefferson Airplane and the Grateful Dead, We Five helped launch the San Francisco sound. During the mid-1960s, the group was on the leading edge of a musical revolution, one that married electric instruments (like electric 12-string guitars) and drums with acoustic folk, ushering in the age of “folk rock.”
Lee Jeans, George Lucas Studios, Milton Bradley, National Geographic, Seven-Up, Sunrise, and Universal Studios. Thomas has been featured on the Ebony/Jet Showcase, The 700 Club, and in The Saturday Evening Post. An exhibit of nineteen of his original works for the Black Heritage stamp series premiered in 1992 at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of American History and subsequently toured the United States. Acclaimed sculptor Don Green is also included in the Ancient Future Exhibition. Don was commissioned by the City of Colorado Springs to sculpt the rearing stallion between Centennial Hall and the Pikes Peak Center. Other commissions followed -- so many that Don has no idea how many of his works grace Colorado Springs, or all of Colorado. Green has served on the Board of Directors for the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center, and on the Colorado Council for Arts and Humanities. His masterpiece, the soaring “Eos,” a symphony in glass and steel, was recently installed on the Colorado Springs campus of the University of Colorado.
The concert will be held in conjunction with the official opening for the Ancient Future Exhibition, curated THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: by Dr. debi Story Maddox. On May 8th, the TLCA doors will open at “The telling of jokes is an art of its 6:30 p.m. for the viewing of the art own, and it always rises from some prior to the concert. emotional threat. For over 17 years, Maddox also served as the Arts Editor for major publications both here in the U.S. and Italy, including 9 years with a U.S. magazine with a monthly circulation of over 200,000. Always “Buy Low, Sell High”....that’s just common sense. But far too many novice investors jump in to deals, hoping to make a quick buck, without educating themselves regarding what constitutes a good investment. Buying a real estate investment in a down market, such as the market we have now, is a good start, but educated yourself on which properties will be good investments and which will be a “money-pit”. Knowing what and where to buy is critical! Buying a “money-pit” at a great price in a down market still makes it a “money-pit”! Always invest in “safe” deals— and you’ll survive long term in this business. Remember, there is no 100-percent “safe” deal, but being conservative will increase your odds of long-term success in real estate investing whether markets are up or down. Instead of trying to guess the bottom and top of a market, stick to particular deals that make sense. In any market you can find bargains in solid neighborhoods. Buying houses

THE POWER OF CHOICES
H
We daily chose our hairstyles, the clothes we wear, the food we put into our bodies. We chose to exercise or not, to obey the law or not and discovering as we do the consequences and benefits of those choices. These choices, if flamed by a passion burning deep within us will help us over come any circumstance, any obstacle to make a difference, to leave our mark, and a legacy for those who come after us. Recently my daughter was devastated by a break-up with her boyfriend caused by a foolish choice on her part. She responded with the expected tears and regrets born of teenage impulsiveness. She said, “I made a mistake” and “I’m only human”. Unfortunately this poor choice caused the end of her first serious relationship. All she needed was to be held as she wept, loved , and reminded that someone still believes in her.

Why does it feel like swimming against a current of sludge and slime to be light-hearted and carefree in the sea of negativity we call life? By the same token, misery does love company. One can always find someone who will agree with you if you want to bash a public figure, or complain about injustice. Positive people are rare. One who is willing to ask you to forget the past and move forward–press on–can be such an encouragement. To be continuously filled with joy while living your passion is the key to life. Getting paid for it is even better, because you’ll never feel like you’re going to work! When life’s choices are linked to your God-given purpose, they become more rewarding and fulfilling. ccording to theory of Chinese medicine, fat tissue is from excess dampness lodged in the skin and muscle. There are several ways to eliminate this dampness from the body. The most effective method is to increase the body’s basal metabolic rate and improve the processing of water and fluids by strengthening the spleen and kidney. The main functions of spleen are transporting, distributing, and transforming water, fluids and food into nutrients and blood in order to nourish body such as, organ, bowels, limbs, and bones. If these functions of spleen are not working well, dampness will occur. The yang of kidney function is regulating water metabolism. It regulates water circulation and helps maintain fluids balance in the body, in order to help the functions of spleen. The two most commonly
Despite our ability to choose, there are those events that come to us NOT by choice. Who would choose amputation, or cancer, or some other life threatening disease. Only a masochist would choose to have a stroke, or miscarry, or the pain that comes from severing relationships. Has it become too much of a platitude to say that ‘it’s not what happens to us, but how we respond to what happens to us”? Bottom line: we can reframe life’s events and choose to see them from a different perspective. I was massaging the hands of a client diagnosed with stage four Cancer. Stage four is the last stage before death. She reflected on a recent visit with her sister. I saw a twinkle in her eye as she shared about not filling the days with busyness, but just spending time relaxing with a glass of lemonade, enjoying each others company as they reminisced about days gone by. Her choices painted for me, the picture of peace. Few people in America are peaceful, upbeat, and positive. Why are they so

used treatment methods for weight loss in traditional Chinese medicine are acupuncture and Chinese herbs. Both methods are natural, safe and more likely to be long term. The Chinese herb and acupuncture techniques are used to strengthen all the organs and function of the body, specially improve spleen and kidney function thereby helping to eliminate excess dampness lodged in the tissue and skin. In addition, we use ear acupuncture. The ear is treated with tiny needles or pellets, then pressed several times per day by the patient. This insures continuous treatment between regularly scheduled office visit. For additional information please call Rona (Ronghua) Bian at (719) 528-6285 www.ronaacupuncture.com

Not a lot of evidence exists to endorse them wholeheartedly, but if you want to give them a try, they won’t hurt you. The arthritis booklet deals with osteoarthritis, also called degenerative arthritis. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 301W, Box 536475 Orlando, FL 32853-6475. KNOBBY FINGER JOINTS INDICATE OSTEOARTHRITIS DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I’m beginning to get little knobs on my finger joints. I believe this is arthritis, and I have seen it in the advanced stages. What can I do to prevent it from getting worse? -- Anon. ANSWER: The knobs on the finger joints below the fingernail are Heberden’s nodes, named after an English doctor who died at the start of the 19th century. Knobs on the middle finger joints are Bouchard’s nodes, named after a French doctor who died in the early years of the 20th century. Both of these knobs are signs of osteoarthritis -the common kind of arthritis, the kind that most seniors have at least a touch of. They’re similar to bone spurs seen on backbones and other bones, another consequence of osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis comes from fraying of the cushioning cartilage inside joints. How extensive or how incapacitating it will be is unpredictable. Most people manage to get along in spite of it. However, it can be a great burden to others. There is no preventive medicine to stop osteoarthritis in its tracks. It has a predilection for the fingers, hips, knees and spine. Should it strike larger joints like hips, knees and backbones, muscle strengthening will serve you well. Strong muscles protect joints. The exercise should not be so vigorous that it causes pain, but it should be vigorous enough to encourage strength building. Being overweight increases the stress on knees and hips, so you should strive to stay on the lean side.
*** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: For quite some time, my right shoulder has hurt. I saw an orthopedic doctor, who says I have a tear of my rotator cuff. He suggested surgery. What do you think of surgery for this? I am scared that I could be worse off after the operation than I am now. I am only 44 and am quite active. -- K.M. ANSWER: The rotator cuff is a band made up of the tendons of four back muscles. The tendons wrap around the topmost part of the upper arm bone, the humerus, to keep the bone in the shoulder socket. Tears of the rotator cuff are a common problem and one of the principal causes of shoulder pain. Small tears can heal on their own. Larger tears almost always require surgical correction. All surgical procedures demand respect. Something can always go wrong. Most people who have had surgery to correct a rotator cuff tear are glad they had it. By most, I mean more than 95 percent. I would not hesitate to have this surgery. *** Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. A celebration is the perfect time to try something new. Mexican Migas are a tasty way to introduce your family to a historic celebration and a meatless, yet-satisfying meal.
MEXICAN MIGAS
CELEBRATE CINCO DE MAYO WITH MEXICAN MIGAS
T
he fifth of May -- or, as it’s known in Mexico and cities around the United States, Cinco de Mayo -- is a regional Mexican holiday. On May 5, 1862, at the Battle of Puebla, the Mexican army led by Mexican General Ignacio Zaragoza Segu’n was victorious over the French army. It’s a cultural holiday celebrated all over the United States, and in the state of Puebla and other states in Mexico. Cinco de Mayo also is the perfect time to add a cultural recipe to your culinary repertoire. Migas (which means crumbs) is a spicy egg and cheese dish that uses broken tortilla chips to create a delicious, all-vegetarian dish. It’s popular in Mexico and the Southwestern United States. Migas are full of protein, and transform ordinary eggs into a quick breakfast, a delicious brunch or lunch, or a delicious main-course meal. My family and I love Migas, and the numerous other ethnic vegetarian dishes we’ve added to our daily menu. We’ve become more adventurous, more open-minded about other cultures, and received the added benefit of a healthier diet and some delicious recipes!

Reduce heat to low and add the beaten eggs to the mixture in the pan. Cook the eggs, gently scraping the bottom of the pan to remove the cooked egg and allow the raw egg to make contact with the heat. Proceed until the eggs are cooked but still soft, about 3 to 5 minutes.

G
nocchi originated in Italy and were originally only flour and water. Potatoes were not added until the mid 1800’s. The best way to cook the potatoes is to steam them. This will help to preserve the flavor. I have a ricer to mash
the potatoes, which works great because it leaves the potatoes smooth. By keeping the potatoes hot while mixing will help in the gluten formation that helps keep the gnocchi from falling apart. It is important that there is a balance of flour because if there isn’t enough the gnocchi will fall apart and if there is too much they will be heavy. Gnocchi are like pasta in that they will go with most sauces but are a little dumpling. Here I’ve sautéed them with olive oil, onion, tomatoes, roasted garlic and fresh basil topped off with some Parmesan cheese. Gnocchi will often have other flavors such as pumpkin, spinach, or ricotta cheese.

Paws Corner By Sam Mazzotta
YOUNG COLLIE OBSESSED WITH ANIMAL DROPPINGS DEAR PAW’S CORNER: We have a lot of nature and wildlife surrounding our property, and much of that wildlife crosses through our yard and leaves “pellets” behind -- deer, skunk, fox, coyote and so on. Our 7-month-old bearded Collie, “Jesse,” is uncontrollably attracted to these pellets and eats them. How do I stop this behavior? -- Cindy K., Clinton Township, Mich. DEAR CINDY: Stopping Jessie from eating those wildlife pellets (droppings, really) is indeed difficult. Dogs instinctively seek out unusual odors and often lick or eat other animals’ droppings as part of this behavior -- after all, droppings can smell quite strong. The most effective way to control Jesse’s behavior is to remove the source of the problem -- that is, the droppings themselves. This means combing through the
HERE’S TO A GREEN PLANET IN RETIREMENT; HOW SOCIAL SECURITY IS HELPING By Rose Fortune Social Security Public Affairs Specialist in Colorado Springs
property prior to letting Jesse out, and picking up and disposing of all droppings.
Social Security has been practicing environmental stewardship long before “going green” was a fashionable catchphrase. Here’s just one example.
That can be pretty labor-intensive, not to mention having Jesse go nuts watching you walk around the yard while he’s stuck inside. Another option is to fence off a portion of the yard big enough for Jesse to run around, while keeping wildlife out. A third option is to put Jesse on a leash when you take him out, so you can keep him away from the wildlife droppings.
When it became necessary to renovate one of the largest buildings at the Social Security headquarters complex, we used sustainable design practices. The result was an environmentally sensitive facility where more than 75 percent of the construction materials were salvaged, and energy use was reduced by 13 percent.
You may be able to combine a couple of methods. In addition to regularly cleaning up the droppings, take Jesse out on a leash and have him “go” in roughly the same area every day. He’ll soon associate this area as his elimination spot. Afterward, spend some time with him on basic obedience (sit, stay, heel) and walk him around the yard on his leash. When he darts out to sniff a dropping or other spot, give him a firm “come!” or “heel!” and, when he returns to your side, a small treat. In short, make obeying you more rewarding than exploring droppings.
This is just one of several buildings that Social Security has given the green makeover. Other environment-friendly buildings are located in Chicago, Philadelphia, Birmingham, Richmond, Calif., and Jamaica, N.Y.

There are things you can do to go green too. For example, you could plant a tree, and recycle your plastic, glass, and paper. But what’s even better than recycling your paper is not having any paper to begin with. Going green is yet another of the many reasons to complete your business transactions with Social Security online. You can complete all of your “pa-
perwork” without using any paper! Whether you want to get an estimate of your future retirement benefits, apply for retirement benefits, apply for Medicare, request a replacement Medicare card, report a change of address or direct deposit if you are currently receiving benefits, or take charge of your retirement planning, you can do it on our website. There’s no need to drive to your local Social Security office. Don’t wait in traffic when you can do Social Security business from the comfort of your home or office. Save a trip (and the gas and carbon emissions that go along with it) and go to www.socialsecurity. gov/onlineservices to get started. Doing business with Social Security online is fast, easy, and secure. It’s also environmentally the cleanest, greenest way to do your Social Security business. Many of our online services are available as automated phone services as well. Just call 1-800-772-1213 to take advantage of them. Not everyone can give their home or office an environmental makeover. But anyone can use our online services or automated phone services. New DVD Releases for Week of May 3, 2010 PICKS OF THE WEEK
“Dirty Dancing: Limited Keepsake Edition” (PG-13) -- This release of “Dirty Dancing” is so packed with special features, there’s no way you’ll put this “baby in a corner” ... of your bookshelf. ... Sorry about that. Anyhoo, this two-disc set contains not only the newly remastered film, but also every special feature that’s been included in previous releases, plus
more than an hour’s worth of bonus material. Extras include a fan reel created by Facebook fans, a tribute to Patrick Swayze, an interview with Swayze about the dancing in the film, a hardcover 52-page book and a coupon for $50 off a stay at the Mountain Lake Hotel in Virginia, which was used as the Kellerman’s Resort in the film. Seriously, with so much stuff in this Keepsake Edition, how could you NOT have “the time of your life”? Aw man, I did it again. “Doctor Zhivago Anniversary Edition” (PG-13) -- Director David Lean’s follow up to “Lawrence of Arabia” is another epic adventure that garnered five Academy Awards. Omar Sharif and Julie Christie star in this majestic love story set during the Russian Revolution. Sharif plays the titular doctor, who also is a poet. Christie is Lara, a married woman who becomes his muse. Zhivago is married and loves his
wife, but also has feelings for the beautiful Lara. Torn by his love for two women, the poet must make a choice while their world erupts in turbulent conflict. “Hamlet” (Unrated) -- David Tennant (“Doctor Who”) stars as the Melancholy Dane in this critically acclaimed Royal Shakespeare Company production of the Bard’s tale of madness, murder and political intrigue. Co-starring in a riveting double-performance is Patrick Stewart (Capt. Jean-Luc Picard from “Star Trek”), who plays both Hamlet’s uncle Claudius, and the ghost of Hamlet’s murdered father. Tennant’s performance is both exhilarating and heart-wrenching -- which will probably come as a surprise to many who only know the Scottish actor from his light-hearted portrayal as the time-traveling hero from “Doctor Who.” “Rock ‘N’ Roll High School” (Rated R) -- Directed by B-movie king Roger Cor-
18
man and starring The Ramones and P.J. Soles, “Rock ‘N’ Roll High School” is a punk-rock classic. When a fascist principal (Mary Woronov) takes over Vince Lombardi High School, The Ramones and the students fight back using the Power of Rock! And explosives.

ountain View Electric crews battled high winds and heavy snow on Friday and Saturday restoring power to members affected by two spring storms that hit the area back to back. At the peak of the outage, 2500 people were out of power in the areas of Black Forest, Calhan, Ellicott, Limon, Peyton and Ramah. Everyone had their power restored by Saturday afternoon. Around 2 a.m. on Friday, ice and high winds caused outages in Calhan and Ellicott and at 9 a.m., outages started in Peyton. Power was restored to all members in these areas by Friday evening. Outages also occurred in Karval and Ramah around 9 a.m. with Karval coming back on line about 3 p.m. and Ramah at 7:15 p.m. On Saturday morning, Ellicott and Calhan were hit again by high winds and experienced outages which were restored in a few hours. In the Black Forest area, heavy snow accumulation broke limbs and trees, toppling or bending them into the clearances and onto power lines causing outages around 11 a.m. At one time, there were approximately 1500 out of power in the Black Forest. MVEA’s tree trimming crew was joined by MVEA’s contracting crew, Asplundh, with an additional Asplundh crew coming out of Pueblo. Together with the operations crews they cut trees and limbs out of the power lines so repairs could start. But, it was slow going during the storm with three feet of snow and unplowed roads, due to high winds, making driving almost impossible. In addition to trying to repair lines, crews were also busy trying to dig their vehicles out of snow drifts. According to Member Services Manager Darryl Edwards, “One of the most difficult problems was finding the damage and getting the equipment to it. With the high winds causing huge drifts, the guys had a tough time getting up the easements and making repairs.” The crews could not access some of the downed trees with power equipment and had to wade through waist deep snow in areas and cut the trees by hand. Due to fatigue and exhaustion, the crews were instructed to wrap up their work at 10 p.m. and start heading back to the office. Many of them did not finish up until after midnight as they would repair problems they spotted on the way back to the operations center. Their priority was to get everyone on as quickly as possible. Eventually, crews have to rest and MVEA feels it is better to rest during the dark hours when it is more difficult to find problems and then start fresh at first light. Fatigued crews are also more prone to serious accidents and injury. These crews had been working for well over 13 hours and reaching a point of concern. As repairs halted for the night, there were about 200 – 300 people still without power. Saturday morning, crews were out by 6 a.m., focusing their efforts

in the Black Forest area and by 2:30 p.m., everyone had their electricity back on. Overall there were 12 MVEA crews working to restore power. Edwards stated, “One of the major difficulties with getting power back on in the Forest was that the problems were isolated from each other. For each line fixed, only 4 or 5 people would come back on. It made finding and repairing all the problems very difficult.” Another issue, according to Edwards, is our 10 foot clearance. “When a 30 foot tree falls over into a 10 foot clearance, it is going to take a line out,” said Edwards. “Trees have always been an issue with power lines. MVEA has an extensive tree trimming program to maintain the clearances along power lines.” Each year MVEA sends an insert in the bill and has an article in Colorado Country Life Magazine with recommendations in preparing for winter outages. With many MVEA members living in areas that are difficult to access during blizzard conditions, it is important for people to be aware of how to keep themselves ready for the unexpected. Here are some suggestions on how to plan ahead for unavoidable power outages that can accompany storms: •

Listen to weather forecasts every day so you will know when high winds or heavy snows or ice are on the way. That kind of weather is most likely to affect power lines. Prepare an outage kit that contains a battery-powered radio; fresh batteries; a flashlight; candles; matches; a wind-up clock; bottled water; paper plates and plastic utensils. Keep a stock of canned food in your cupboard along with a manual can opener. Consider buying a camp stove and fuel that you can use (outdoors only) if you can’t cook on your electric stove. Tape MVEA’s phone number on your refrigerator so it will be handy if you must report an outage. Do not take it for granted that your neighbor has made the call. Your cordless phone will not work so have a traditional phone or cell phone that you can use. Dress in layers to stay warm. Consider a small generator to run a small electric heater and be sure to have a filled gas can for emergencies. If you have a large generator hooked into your system, be sure you have a double throw switch so it does not feed back into the grid. Teach children to stay away from fallen or sagging power lines. They could be energized and dangerous even if the power is out.
MVEA sincerely apologizes for any inconvenience our members experienced during this storm. Please be reminded that April and May have more snowfall than any other months, so be prepared. MVEA compliments the crews on a job well done in getting power restored as quickly as possible to our members during such adverse conditions.

Your first thought might be that giving your mother a check may seem “tacky.” But these days, everyone can use a little extra cash. However, you can find other types of financial gifts that can have a longer-lasting impact. Here are a few ideas to consider: Help Mom fund her IRA. If your mother is still working, she can contribute to an IRA — and she should. Either a traditional or Roth IRA is a great way to build tax-advantaged savings for retirement. Yet most people don’t fully fund their IRAs each year. In 2010, your mother can put in $5,000 to her IRA, or $6,000 if she’s 50 or older. While you can’t directly contribute to her IRA, you can write a check for that purpose. Purchase an investment for Mom. If you can afford it, consider giving a few shares of stock, possibly issued by companies that make products or services your mother uses. (If you give shares that you own, you’ll need to keep records of your initial sales price; this information will be useful to your mother if she ever sells the shares and needs to pay capital gains taxes.) If you think your mother could benefit from an increase in her cash flow, you might consider giving her a corporate or government bond, which can provide regular interest payments.
lower your mother’s debt payments, the more she can put away for retirement. While you probably aren’t in a position to pay off all her debts, perhaps you could handle a car or credit card payment as a Mother’s Day gift. Make a charitable gift in Mom’s name. Your mother probably supports many worthy causes — and a financial gift to any one of them, in her name, would probably please her greatly. Furthermore, your generosity may provide you with an immediate tax deduction, assuming the group to which you donate meets the tax deductibility guidelines established by the IRS. In fact, if you donated an appreciated asset, such as a stock, you could possibly get two tax breaks: a deduction on this year’s taxes and the avoidance of capital gains taxes that will result from the eventual sale of an asset. Before donating this type of asset, though, consult with your tax advisor. Provide Mom with some financial education. If your mother doesn’t know much about investing, you might get her a book on the topic. Or, better yet, if you have a financial advisor whom you trust, introduce him or her to your mother. Once your mother enters her pre-retirement and retirement years, she may have many issues — such as cash flow management, estate planning and investing to stay ahead of inflation — for which she could use the help of a financial professional. Mother’s Day comes and goes in a day — but by making the right type of financial gift to your mother, your generosity can be felt for years to come. Even before your case is set for trial, once your case is at issue the first phase of discovery begins. “Discovery” is the process by which all parties give each other, or demand from each other, all information and copies of all documents or other tangible things that might have any bearing whatsoever on the case, both claims and defenses. INTEREST-ONLY MORTGAGES
T
here are those who say that interest-only mortgages are the main reason for the housing market’s problems in recent years. Loans were given fast and loose, with many purchasers barely qualifying for the interest portion, never mind the principal when it was added in. Still, interest-only mortgage loans are still out there, and purchasers will sign up for them. On paper, an interest-only mortgage looks enticing: The first years offer a significantly lower monthly payment, especially if you’re only going to keep your home for a few years.
or entity that might have any information that might possibly be in any way related to the case, or helpful to one party or another.
Freddie Mac (the Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation) was charted by Congress in 1970 as a means of providing stability in residential mortgage markets, especially for low- and moderateincome buyers. It props up the market by providing capital to lenders. It can be taken as something of a warning that Freddie Mac recently announced that later this year, in September, it will stop purchasing interest-only mortgages. Not only will there be fewer choices in obtaining a mortgage, the message itself is rather grim. Part of the decision, it seems, is that while Freddie Mac saw an increase in defaulted and delinquent mortgages during the past few years, the decision to end those mortgages completely seems to say that it doesn’t see a light at the end of the tunnel -- and is bailing out completely. That’s not to say buyers won’t be able to get an interest-only loan, just that it will be tougher to find. Getting a loan is likely to be difficult, but not impossible, with borrowers needing to qualify at the full (interest plus principal) mortgage amount.

requests of the other party. You are allowed, under the Rules, to depose each adverse party and two other persons. If you want to depose more people, you have to move the court for permission to do so, and give a good reason why. At a deposition you can ask the deponent as many questions as you like, and they have to answer them; however, no deposition can last more than seven hours without the court’s permission. Depositions are horribly expensive; you have to pay

There are other types of mortgages to consider: • Fixed-rate mortgage. These are the safest mortgages because your monthly payment will be stable for the life of the loan. The only things that could go up are the insurance and property-tax portions. With insurance, you have the opportunity to shop around. • Biweekly mortgages. You make half of your mortgage payment every two weeks. At the end of the year, you will have made 13 months’ of payments instead of 12. The mortgage gets paid off earlier because of the extra payment each year. Before you decide on an interest-only mortgage, run the numbers and see what they look like at www.mortgagecalculator.org.

the court reporter taking the deposition, and they are not cheap! Written discovery is much more cost-effective. You are allowed to serve upon each adverse party up to thirty written interrogatories, asking for information. These are like essay questions. You can ask for any information that is likely to be relevant or helpful to your case. You are also allowed to serve up to 20 requests for production of documents or other tangible things you believe to be in the possession of the adverse party, that you believe would be relevant or helpful to your case. For example, you might request copies of agreements, bank statements, tax returns, and the like if they are possibly in any way relevant. Finally, you are allowed under the Rules to serve up to twenty requests for admission on each adverse party. In a request for admission, you ask the adverse party to admit that certain required elements of your case are true, so you don’t have to prove it in court.
OBSERVATIONS OF A CPA AND A FINANCIAL PLANNER AFTER APRIL 15TH
A
fter performing approximately 500 tax returns and conducting numerous financial planning updates with clients, there seems to be some obvious trends: • People are frightened and confused given the declines in their 401(k)s, the housing market, unemployment and rising healthcare costs. • People not putting money into tax deferred accounts in spite of rising taxes • People not knowing the types of tax deferred accounts (401(k)s, IRAs, Annuities) • People not having life or disability Insurance • People not knowing financial objectives, risk tolerance, having proper diversification • People not knowing the change to estate tax laws or having an estate plan • People not seeking professional advice While people may be disillusioned with the current financial situation for which they have no control, they still have quite a bit of control over their own financial futures by implementing some very simple, fundamental techniques. These include: • Having a monthly budget/stick to it • Knowing assets and liabilities; not getting into too much debt and maximizing
If the adverse party does not respond, in full, to your written discovery requests (the interrogatories, and the requests for production and for admission) within thirty days of service, they are in a world of hurt. For example, any request for admission not specifically denied is deemed admitted for use at trial. Ouch! The non-responding party can also be sanctioned: fined, barred from introducing evidence and witnesses or presenting argument or testimony at trial, or from presenting any defenses or case at trial. Ouch! The fundamental principle behind discovery is that there should be NO SURPRISES AT TRIAL. Again, THIS IS NOT TELEVISION OR THE MOVIES. In order that justice may be served all parties must have access to all of the information available. Success is measured by your time horizon, not day-to-day Clearly, it is true that Americans are facing pension plunges, threats to the solvency of Social Security and Medicare, rising future inflation, and current unemployment. However, this only means that each individual needs to take more financial responsibility for himself. This can be done by each individual establishing disciplined budgets, disciplined investment and tax strategies, protecting themselves with various insurance policies, maintaining current job skills, and seeking/using professional advice. It is also clear, that with the projected return of estate taxes to their pre-2001 levels on January 1st, 2011 ($1M lifetime unified gift / estate credit, 55% tax rate on anything above $1M), families must start estate planning NOW! On a brighter note, it is also clear that the recent recession is a normal part of any economic cycle and we have already seen some recovery from the last 2 ½ years, which is also normal for a recession. So I say, the American financial system remains remarkably resilient but we should all strive to be optimistic, disciplined and smart.
