h, the inevitable: the AARP card. Once hit with that 50th birthday, every American is eligible for membership in the American Association of Retired People. It’s a rite of passage, however dreaded. But, at least those 50-year-olds have 15 more years before they are officially declared “older Americans.”

The Administration on Aging defines the older population as those who are age 65-plus. The oldest baby boomer (born from 1946 to 1964) will be 65 in 2011; and, as the segment of the population that has been setting standards for years, it’s unlikely those boomers will quietly retreat into old age. Nope. Marketing ads touting 40 as the new 30; 50 as the new 40 and 60 as the new 50 give that aging population another 10 years. Helping the process is a slew of products to keep the body young looking and healthy.

May is Older Americans Month. To celebrate, here’s a glimpse at the older population in the United States, using that 65-plus definition.

OLDER AMERICANS ON THE RISE As of 2008, the latest research for the following data, here are some stats on America’s older population. • In 2008, there were 38.9 million older Americans. • Older Americans represent 12.8 percent of the U.S population – about one in eight Americans. • The number of older Americans is expected to almost double by 2030 – to just over 72 million or 19 percent of the general population in the U.S. • In 2008, the 65-75 age group, totaling 20.1 million, was more than nine times larger than the older population in 1900. The population of Americans age 75 to 84 (13 million) that same year was 17 times greater than 1900. The 85-plus category (5.7 million) was 47 times larger. • Here’s a sure-bet tribute to medicine. In 2008, more than 92,000 Americans were age 100 or 100-plus – an increase of 147 percent from 1990, when the older population stood at 37,306. • Keeping with the norm, females age 65-plus remain the dominant sex in numbers. In 2008, there were 22.4 million older women in the U.S., compared to 16.5 million older men. That’s a ratio of 136 women to 100 men. The female to male sex ratio increases with age.

COLORADO’S OLDIE GOLDIES In 2008, people age 65 and older comprised 10.3 percent of Colorado’s population, compared to 12.8 percent of the national population.

BUSINESS AND FINANCE PAGES 18-19

The U.S. Census Bureau estimates there are more than 523,000 older persons living in Colorado. That number is expected to increase to 745,000 by 2015 and more than one million by 2025. That jump has everything to do with the baby boomers. It is estimated that this year the number of people age 60plus in Colorado is 770,000.

MOVE OVER FLORIDA Colorado, with its mild temperatures, plentiful year-round activities and rich natural surroundings, has been called a Mecca for retiring boomers. Mecca or not, Colorado has the seventh fastest-growing aging population in the U.S. The U.S. Census Bureau predicted that in 2010, Colorado will be home to about 700 persons age 100 or older. The United Nations predicts that by the year 2050, more than two million persons worldwide will be age 100 or older. Colorado and Colorado Springs have many organizations that address senior issues. The Pikes Peak Area Council of Governments – Area Agency on Aging is a hub of information for senior organizations. Check it out at http://ppacg.org/aaa/info.

AGING MYTHS Many people have preconceived ideas about older Americans or getting older themselves. Aging is not about being sentenced to an old rocking chair.

Age is All in the Mind... Continued from Page 2 Researchers believe that frailty or disability in older people has little to do with the aging process; it’s about age-related diseases like cancer, stroke, diabetes and heart disease. Researchers say the majority of people who reach their 100th birthday have lived independently well into their 90s – 15 percent of them don’t have any age-related diseases.

OTHER MYTHS: 1. Losing a FEW extra pounds will extend your life. People age 75 or over who carry a little extra fat provide more energy to the immune system. In a study of 3,000 seniors, those with a body mass index of 27 – 154 pounds for a 5 ft. 4 in. woman – live longer than even those who have a healthy BMI of 19 to 25. But obesity – BMI of over 30 – is still a detriment to healthy aging. 2. Every older person needs a hearing aid. Only 35 percent of 80-year-olds need hearing aids. Some people in their 90s still have perfect hearing. The No. 1 cause of hearing loss: noise. Tune in to nature instead of AC/ DC. 3. Older people are withdrawn and crotchety. Here’s the skinny: If you were crotchety in your 40s, you’ll be an old stick in the mud in your 80s. But that cheerful disposition you’ve had in youth remains with aging. Personalities don’t change much after age 30, unless there is a physical or mental reason. 4. Senility is inevitable. Maybe you’ll forget your keys or why you went into the bedroom, but actual senility is not a normal part of aging. While there is a bit of decline

in cognitive ability, the majority of people don’t have impairments that interfere with their independence. Staying mind-active is one way to boost those cognitive abilities. 5. No energy to exercise past 80! Here we go – now this study reported by U.S News and World Report Health calls age 90 the new “70.” That’s a 20-year gain, especially for those who exercise by strength training and participating in at least 30 minutes daily of aerobic exercise like walking.

CELEBRATING THE “COMING OF AGE” Aging in America hasn’t always been the hot topic it is today. President John F. Kennedy initiated “Senior Citizens Month” in 1963, after meeting with the National Council of Senior Citizens about the unmet needs of older Americans. Just 17 million Americans reached their 65th birthday in the early 1960s, and a third of those who did were living in poverty. There were few programs for seniors in the post-WW II era.

OLDER AMERICANS ACT

Baby boomers have also been plagued with the latest economic crisis – dwindling savings. Their choices for retirement could depend on issues like taxes, insurance and the job market for post-retirement income. They’re looking for opportunity and stimulation.

Two years after Kennedy organized Senior Citizens Month, Congress passed the Older Americans Act to address the continued lack of social services for older people in communities nationwide. The legislation established the Administration on Aging, which is still today the federal focal point for issues on aging. The OAA is No. 1 in the U.S. for organizing and delivering social and nutrition services to older people and their caregivers. The OAA authorizes programs through a network of 56 state agencies on aging, 629 area agencies on aging and more. Programs through the OAA assist low-income older persons with community service employment; provide training and research programs in the field of aging and oversee elder rights protection activities.

Aging gracefully or gracefully aging? Some people defy the myths around aging. From actors to former presidents, they’ve made aging a privileged process.

Active in their 70s: • Harry Reid, senator • Actor George Hamilton

• Clint Eastwood is 80 and still directing and acting.

TO FLORIDA WE GO?

• Former President George H.W. Bush jumped out of a plane at age 80.

Some states have purposefully catered to the older population as a means of economic survival, i.e. Florida.

• Actor Helen Mirren is age 63 and a role model for gracefully and beautifully aging.

Ponce de Leon called Florida the “fountain of youth;” and, for decades, Florida has been the premier destination for retirees, whether it’s snowbirds (those escaping northern winters) or permanent residents (those brave enough to get through hot, humid summers). But hold the beaches: Colorado is among many states attracting aging baby boomers who have, since birth, set the trends in the U.S. Boomers aren’t following mom and dad to the sunshine state.

• Mystery novelist Mary Higgins Clark is over 80.

• Actor Robert Redford

• Actress/comedian Lilly Tomlin • Designer Ralph Lauren

What list would it be without mentioning fitness and health guru Jack Lalane? For those too young to remember, Lalane was an iconic figure in muscle-man feats. Today, he’s 94 and still working out every day. It’s probably a given that plastic surgery has helped preserve some of those on the above list from the effects of aging, but there’s no plastic surgery to boost energy levels or keep the brain engaged. Mark Twain said it best: It’s all in the mind.

Well, now that the don’ts are out of the way, let’s get to the do’s. There is a natural process that all quarries and fabricators use to polish stone floors. Even if the stone floor has been destroyed by acid, this process can and will erase all etchings and scratches and put shine back into the stone.

What if the flooring has an unpolished look? This process is still the answer. The only difference is the end product is a matte finish instead of a glossy one. Stone floors are beautiful, but very expensive so you will want to be sure they are protected in the best way possible.

It is best not to have the luster restored by means of re-crystallization or vitrification because these processes are acid based. So what’s the big deal with acid? Marble and limestone are made up of a compound of calcium carbonate along with other minerals. Scientists have deduced that when the stone mixes with acid, this calcium and carbonate bond is broken. Once this compound is destroyed, calcium ions are released by the stone, producing a new compound, calcium fluorosilicate, forming an impervious film on the stone which blocks its pores. If the pores are blocked, the stone cannot breathe so moisture is trapped inside the stone and it will begin to rot.

ai Yi (pronounced Tie Yee) means supreme movement or supreme health in English and is a very powerful type of energy work that can assist a person in his or her healing on a profound level...when the desire for healing on the recipient’s part is present. Many people carry some sort of resistance to healing on some level, including in receiving Tai Yi energy work. The key is to work at moving beyond the resistance and allowing oneself to accept ALL the energy being offered. If you know you carry resistance and you desire Tai Yi, talk with your practitioner about the resistance. Do not just attempt to suppress it; that will simply build a compression that will further deny the energy and/or the counseling that may be offered at the Tai Yi session. Tai Yi is very powerful because it works with all the meridians, not simply the physical meridians. While acupuncture is also very beneficial, Tai Yi works differently and works with the person on an emotional, mental, and physical level. In Tai Yi, there are over 4,000 treatments that range from simple to very complex. In a Tai Yi session, the practitioner will place grid points-which feel as if a light poke along the back, arms, legs, and/or head-in a certain placement on the body that is similar to acupuncture points. The grid points are the first part of the treatment. The practitioner will then send Universal Energy into the grid points according to the treatment. On some treatments, energy needs to be sent for one minute, while on some, energy is

The YMCA Tri-Lakes Family Center and Spotlight Community Theatre will present a two-week musical theatre workshop for students ages 9 – 17, weekday afternoons (1:30 – 4:00 pm) from June 7 to 19, 2010.

The purpose of Tai Yi is to offer Universal Energy to a willing recipient so that person can accept the energy and allow it to become a part of his or her own energetic system. The energy will bring up emotions and/or memories so the person can work on that issue. The energy can clear out stagnation, raise the immune system, and work with healing sinus infections. It can also assist in releasing toxins, fears, anger, work with healing depression, and many other areas.

The initial workshop will be held at the YMCA Family Center, 17250 Jackson Creek Pkwy, in Monument. The workshop will consist of professional instruction in music, acting, movement, set and costume creation, and theatre performance skills. The workshop will conclude with two fully licensed performances of:

Disney’s The AristoCats

After the treatment, drink plenty of water and allow the energy to work for the given time-three to seven days depending on the exercise/treatment. Meaning: do not resist the emotions and/or memories that begin to surface...feel them...express them...own them. Allow yourself to begin understanding how to heal them. One can sabotage a treatment immediately. Be aware of this if you have a tendency to sabotage healing and yourself.

Most importantly, take the time necessary, after the treatment, to nurture yourself, celebrate yourself, and allow yourself to heal using the Universal Energy that was offered. Do not rush around after a treatment, but rather take time to relax, take a nap, meditate, take a walk, listen to music, eat good food, and enjoy your morning, afternoon, evening, or day.

Article by Robyn Graham Keller Williams Real Estate, LLC

If you are a seller who wants to move up to a more expensive home, the best time to do so is in a down market! Let me explain…. If you sell and buy simultaneously, you're ahead of the game because the price reduction on the purchase is greater than the loss on the sale. Let's say your present house is worth $300,000, but because the down market you must reduce your price by 10%. So, instead of receiving $300,000, you would get $270,000 and "lose" $30,000. But if you are planning to move up to a $500,000 house, which is located in the same distressed market, you would logically buy that house at that same 10% discount or $450,000. This would mean you had saved $50,000. So you "lost" $30,000 on the sale of your home, but you "made" $50,000 on the purchase of your new home. That puts you $20,000 ahead!

Don't Forget the Impact of Interest Rates It's not always "whether or not prices have hit rock bottom or not" that's the issue you should be concerned about. The interest rate you get from

If interest rates are near an alltime low and beginning to inch upwards, waiting could cost you more than you would think. This is what happens if you're looking for a loan around $400,000.

FOAM ROLLER EXERCISE

L

ike fitness balls, bands and exercise tubing, foam rollers (those white cylinders you see piled up in the corners of fitness studios and gyms) have become common in the workout environment as a cross-over piece equipment from rehab training. Similar to a “water noodle” used for aquatics, foam rollers are very simplistic in nature; nothing more than a cylinder or half-cylinder made of highdensity foam. The rollers come in all sizes and lengths and are one of the most economical items on the market today! Not only are they inexpensive, lightweight and versatile, they can be put to all kinds of uses, such as stretching, self-massage, body support, and stability exercises. USING FOAM BODY ROLLERS Many fitness instructors / personal trainers incorporate foam rollers into their exercise routine, so this might be a first-line avenue for you to get ideas for using them, but they do invite experimentation. If you decide to try it on your own… do not feel intimidated, it is easy and safe! You can’t really make a mistake unless you attempt to stand on it without something (or someone) nearby to aid your balance. Although foam rollers are excellent tools for sports performance and balance, I highly recommend you start out with stretching exercises or massage before anything else. STRETCH, MASSAGE, BODY PROP AND MORE! As Massage Tool: Don’t you love it when a massage actually gets to just the spot you need to release? Try rolling that muscle or area on the foam roller. Notice I said “on the roller,” not “with the roller.” That means you actually put your body weight on the roller and gently rock and roll your way to stress relief. As a Body Part Prop: Lie on your back in rest position and place the foam roller under slightly bent knees. This position will help lengthen and relax your spine. If you have weak abdominal muscles and/or very tight back muscles, place the foam roller under the hips while maintaining a 90 degree bend at the knees. Foam Rollers for a Stiff Back: In addition to being used as a prop, foam roller exercises can help increase the mobility of a stiff back. This can be achieved by rolling back and forth or side to side over a full round foam roller with the roller either parallel or perpendicular to the spine. The rolling should be focused on the stiffer areas, usually the thoracic or mid spine. Ensure that you do not experience sharp pains while using this technique. If you do, discontinue targeting that area. Spinal Mobility with Alternate Arm Raises: In addition to rolling over stiff spinal segments, other movements can be performed to enhance spinal mobility. One of my favorites is alternate arm raises. While lying on a half or full roll with the roll vertically along your spine, place your head on one end of the roll and raise one straightened arm straight up so that your elbow is beside your ear. At the same time move the other straightened arm down along side your body. Alternate this movement slowly. Foam Rollers for Stretching the Chest: The pecs and anterior chest are common areas of significant muscle and tissue tightness. This tightness often exacerbated by, or directly the result of, the common chronic position people often find themselves in as they hunch over their desks and computers. You can achieve a great pec stretch while lying down with a foam roller underneath you along the length of your spine. Once in this position, bend your elbows to about a 90 degree angle and bring them to be level with your shoulders while letting your

Stroke of Grace

hands gently drop back towards the floor. This position can be held for your usual passive stretch duration and repeated.

LIVE YOUR LIFE ON PURPOSE... WITH PURPOSE!

Shoulder Stretching: The shoulders can be targeted specifically while on your hands and knees. While on all-fours, place one hand on the foam roller and the other on a mat or floor surface. With the foam roller at various angles to your body on different sets, allow yourself to slowly roll the foam prop up your arm (push away) as you reach ahead of you or out to the side. Improving Balance and Strength: It is common for physical therapists, fitness instructors and personal trainers to offer exercises that are to be performed on unstable surfaces such as a wobble board, Bosu ball, and an air-filled disc or fitness ball. The foam roller is another piece of equipment that can be used for the same purpose – to improve overall balance, sport specific movements and core strength. In additional to working the main muscles being targeted in the exercise, the deep muscles of both the abdomen and back are also required while stabilizing yourself on a foam roller. If you choose this type of advanced balance movement on the roller, be sure you have built a solid base before adding progression and performance routines. Progression and Performance: Less advanced exercises can involve simply doing bridging with your feet on the roll. Bridging is an exercise that is performed by lying on your back with your knees bent. The bridging part comes in when you push through your feet and lift your hips and torso off of the floor while keeping your head and shoulders on the floor. Initial progressions from the standard floor bridge include bridging with your feet on a half roll, bridging with your feet on a full roll and then on to single leg bridging (only one foot on the roll with the other leg extended straight out) and then to standing on the roll. Free weight exercises such as bicep curls are often performed while balancing in standing on a roll. On the even more advanced end of the spectrum are barbell squats while standing on a foam roll. Sports performance can dramatically improve by performing exercises and sport specific movements on the unstable surface of a foam roller. To make these activities even more beneficial, be sure you use the foam roll to stretch and massage affected muscles first and then perform the movements on the roll using the newly pliable and lengthened muscles.

SO WHAT IS LIFE COACHING ANYWAY? BY Cathy R. Deschaine, M.A. LC

I

know some if not many of the readers been wondering, ”what is a life coach anyway”?

Well, being a Life Coach, I have that answer…at least to that question. A life coach is a professional person who helps you design your future. It is different and yet similar to counseling; I’ll try and distinguish that as well. The bigger picture includes traditional models vs. a new option in helping people live their dreams. Areas I will talk about here include: focus of treatment; motivation; characteristics of the helper-client relationship; and finally outcomes of each model. Focus of Treatment: Therapy focuses on the past to understand how the individual got to be the way he/she is. The paradigm is pathology! Generally therapy assumes that the client has a problem that needs to be solved . The focus is on processing feelings from inside the patient. With this new option, life coaching, focus is on taking the person from where they are now and moving to the future rather than dwelling on the past. It is action oriented and assumes the client is whole and capable of living a wonderful life. Motivation: for seeking treatment vs. coaching: Clients seek a therapist as a source of fixing or eliminating their problem; clients seek a coach to help them get more out of their lives or to create new possibilities fro their lives. If you are ready to press on from your past, then life coaching is for you! Characteristics of the helper-client relationship: Clients seek out therapist with the hope that they are the expert who holds

10

Cathy R. Deschaine, MA, LC Life Coach Inspirational Speaker Spiritual Mentor

the answers and has techniques to help resolve their problem. Coaching clients see the coach as a partner to support their growth in helping them create an even better life. Focus is on the relationship and the process of feelings for therapy, while coaching the focus is action-oriented and powered by where the client wants to go. Outcomes: While therapy asks “why”, coaching asks “how” to gain information about goals. Clients are in better places at the end of both treatment modalities. Outcomes for therapy include a better understanding of “why I am the way I am”; Outcomes for coaching a greater understanding of how to overcome the obstacles getting in the way of their living their dreams. Even though I have a Master’s degree in Counseling, and have worked as a therapist for several years, the idea of being free from restrictions of managed care, and meeting solely in an office was very appealing to me. Life coaches can meet initially face to face but work primarily over the phone. Imagine the freedom of busy people simply closing their office door to call their coach, as opposed to stopping work, driving to an office, in order to talk with a therapist. Skyping has also opened up a whole new world to breakdown in communication over the phone. Only 7% of communication are the words that are spoken. The rest comes from body language, facial expressions, and eye contact. I skype! Do you? Skyping isn’t even in the dictionary yet that’s how new it is. Technology has come so far in just a little time, Give me a call and we can start today to design the life you could and desire to be living. Once you have clear goals for your future, identifying the obstacles that are getting in the way will become so much easier. For additional information please call Cathy R. Deschaine, MA, LC at 719-243-2860 www.StrokeofGrace.com

SNIPPETZ® HEALTH AND WELLNESS beef or fish; salami; pastrami; bacon; pepperoni; hot dogs; and the taste enhancer monosodium glutamate are on the list of possible migraine inducers. Medicines for treating a migraine abound. Tylenol, aspirin and drugs like ibuprofen take care of mild migraines. For more severe ones, triptans are the standard treatment. They include Imitrex, Axert, Frova, Zomig, Amerge and Maxalt. An older medicine, ergotamine, still has a place in treatment

TREATMENTS ABOUND FOR MIGRAINES DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Please say something about migraine headaches. I think that’s what I have. They come on fast, and the pain feels like something is pulsating in my head. I throw up with every headache. Bright lights make things worse. Does all this sound like a migraine to you? Someone told me there’s always a warning before a migraine starts. I have no warning. I’ve used Tylenol, but it doesn’t do much for me. What is the treatment? Can they be prevented? -- L.G. ANSWER: Your headaches have many of the characteristics of a migraine headache. The warning mentioned to you is an aura. The aura usually precedes a migraine. It can be flashing zigzag lines, peculiar sensations -- often in the hands -trouble finding the right words to speak or weakness of a group of muscles. Only 20 percent of migraine patients have an aura, so it’s not an indispensable migraine sign. Nausea and vomiting are common migraine symptoms. Seventy percent of migraine patients have a one-sided headache that they describe as throbbing or a dull ache. It lasts from four hours to three days. People with migraines are very sensitive to light and sound, so they seek a dark, quiet room to lie down. Stress, overexertion, sleep deprivation and hunger can provoke a migraine. Some foods and drinks can do the same. Alcohol (especially red wine); caffeine; pickles; bananas; yogurt; avocados; aged cheeses; pickled or marinated chicken,

REPS HAS AN OFFER YOU CAN’T REFUSE...

For migraine prevention, propranolol, verapamil and amitriptyline are prescribed if the headaches occur often and disrupt life. The headache booklet discusses the causes and treatment of the more common kinds of headaches. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 901W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Tonight my wife choked on a piece of corn. She jumped up gasping, and looked at me as if I should have done something. Her gasping stopped, and she could breathe. She asked me why I didn’t jump up and hit her back. I heard if you hit somebody choking on the back, it could force the food farther down. Did I do the right thing? -- R.M. ANSWER: The Red Cross has changed its instructions on how to handle a choking adult. It now recommends leaning the person forward and giving five blows to the back between the shoulder blades with the heel of the hand. If that doesn’t dislodge the food, then start the Heimlich maneuver.

START WITH AVOCADOS

I

’ve found some great buys recently on Haas avocados. I’ve enjoyed experimenting with unique recipes that showcase their smooth, buttery flavor. Hass avocados are native to Mexico and grow in the Michoacan area, west of Mexico City. The climate and growing conditions are perfect there because of the rich volcanic soil and mountain rain. Avocados contain the good “heart healthy” fats important in a balanced diet. They contain 20 vitamins and minerals and are a good source of fiber, folate and potassium. Avocados also contain high amounts of magnesium, vitamin E and folic acid compared to other fruits. They’re also high in beta-carotene and have 60 percent more potassium than bananas. Firm avocados will ripen in a day or two at room temperature in a brown paper bag on your kitchen counter. An avocado is ready to serve when the skin turns from dark green to nearly black and yields when pressed gently with a thumb. Ripe avocados can be kept in the refrigerator for several days. This recipe for Mexican Avocado and Grapefruit Salad With Warm Bacon Dressing is an unusual and tasty combination of flavors. The buttery texture of the avocado and the cheese, the citrus bite of the grapefruit slices and the crunchy tortillas and jicama are highlighted by the beautifully flavored warm bacon dressing. This salad is the perfect way to start a dinner party. MEXICAN AVOCADO AND GRAPEFRUIT SALAD WITH WARM BACON DRESSING 4 large (10 inch) flour tortillas 2 fully ripened avocados from Mexico, halved, pitted and peeled* 4 cups mixed greens 1 large pink or white grapefruit, sectioned and cut into

large chunks (about 1 cup packed) reserving juice 1 cup jicama or 1 Granny Smith apple, peeled and cut in 1/2-inch matchsticks 3 ounces queso fresco or feta cheese, cut in 1/2-inch cubes (3/4 cup) 6 slices bacon Olive oil, if needed 2/3 cup thinly sliced purple onion 3 jalape–os, seeds removed, shell cut in thin matchsticks 1 tablespoon lime juice 2 teaspoons sugar 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper 1. Preheat oven to 350 F. Coat large baking sheet with nonstick cooking spray. Arrange tortillas on sheet; spray lightly with cooking spray. Bake until crisp and beginning to brown, 6 to 8 minutes; transfer to 4 serving plates. Cut and reserve 12 thin avocado slices; dice remaining avocado. In large bowl, combine mixed greens, grapefruit chunks, jicama, queso fresco or feta and diced avocado. 2. In large skillet over medium-low heat, cook bacon until crisp; drain. Pour bacon drippings from pan into measuring cup. If necessary, add oil to make 1/4 cup. Return drippings to skillet; heat over medium heat. Add onion and jalapeno; cook until tender. Add lime juice, sugar, salt, pepper and reserved 3 tablespoons grapefruit juice; bring to a boil, stirring to incorporate the browned bits. Pour mixture over avocado mixture in bowl; toss gently and divide equally onto each tortilla. Crumble bacon over salads and garnish each with 3 avocado slices. Serves 4. * TIP: To open an avocado, cut lengthwise around the pit; gently twist to separate halves. To remove the pit, place half on a counter and strike with the blade of sharp knife; twist to remove. Scoop out the flesh with a spoon. To prevent cut or prepared avocados from darkening, cover tightly with clear plastic wrap and refrigerate. *** Angela Shelf Medearis is an award-winning children’s author, culinary historian and the author of six cookbooks. New DVD Releases for Week of May 24, 2010 PICKS OF THE WEEK “Spartacus: 50th Anniversary Edition” (PG13) -- Kirk Douglas stars in this Stanley Kubrick-directed Sword & Sandal epic about a Roman gladiator who leads a failed slave revolt against the Roman Empire. “Spartacus” sports a stellar supporting cast: Laurence Olivier, Peter Ustinov (who won an Oscar for his performance), Tony Curtis, Jean Simmons and Charles Laughton. The battle

scenes, although a half-century old, are just as thrilling as anything you saw in Russell Crowe’s “Gladiator.” This release is the restored director’s cut, which includes the infamous bath house scene between Olivier and Curtis that was removed because of its overt bisexual content.

Cartney, Bruce Springsteen, Wilson Pickett, The Doors & Eddie Vedder, Aretha Franklin, Little Richard and, well, just about everybody who had a hit record between 1955 and 1995. There’s also more than four hours of bonus footage, including rehearsal performances, interviews and induction speeches.

“The Road” (R) -- In the aftermath of an unspecified global apocalyptic event, a father and son (Viggo Mortensen, Kodi SmitMcPhee) struggle to survive in a savage world where most of humanity has been wiped out, cold-blooded cannibalistic fiends lurk around every corner and the inevitability of cruel death hangs like a shroud over every waking moment. So yeah. Feel-Good Movie of 2009, for sure.

“Stagecoach” (The Criterion Collection) (Unrated) -- John Wayne got his first big role as The Ringo Kid in John Ford’s epic Western about a perilous stagecoach journey from Arizona to New Mexico. Some critics have called this film the “Citizen Kane” of Westerns, and I agree. “Stagecoach” rewrote the genre and created a template for the modern Western film. John Wayne, in the uncommon role of an outlaw, delivers an absolutely riveting and timeless performance; and John Ford’s breathless cinematography makes the film a feast for the eyes. Truth be told, I am not a big fan of Westerns, but there are a few cowboy movies that are so well done, I can’t help but love them.

“Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame: Legends” (Unrated) -- This 3-DVD set contains 46 performances from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremonies including performances by Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, Paul Mc-

“Stagecoach” is one of them. The others (in case you were wondering): “The Shootist” (also starring The Duke), “Tombstone” (starring Kurt Russell) and “The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance” (Wayne again, with Jimmy Stewart).

A professional financial advisor can help you create a suitable asset allocation for your 401(k), IRA or other investment accounts. Most 529 plans also offer an asset allocation strategy, typically based on the age of the child or the number of years until college enrollment. For example, if your child is younger, your plan might start off with a higher percentage of aggressive investments in order to maximize your growth potential. As your child gets closer to college, the plan may take a more conservative approach to help reduce the effects of volatility before you start tapping into the plan. Clearly, a 529 plan has much in common with popular investment vehicles, but it has other characteristics of which you’ll want to be aware. For one thing, the financial aid impact: Assets in a 529 plan are considered an asset of the account owner, usually the parent. Federal financial aid formulas generally expect parents to use a smaller percentage of their assets for college funding. Consequently, you’ll want to explore all aspects of any 529 plan, possibly in consultation with your financial and tax advisors, before taking action. But don’t wait too long — your children will move from day care to dormitories in what seems like a blink of an eye. ’ll bet the title got your attention. This article is about Court fees in divorce cases. It is possible to get divorced in Colorado for as little as $230. This is the filing fee for a divorce where minor children are not involved. If you are indigent, the Court may waive some, or all, of the fees. The subject of indigence for Court fees will be the subject of a future article. The filing fee for a petition of dissolution of marriage (divorce) or legal separation is $230. If your spouse signs the petition as a co-petitioner, that is all you will have to pay, if no minor children are involved, and you and your spouse are agreed as to all matters. If minor children are involved, the filing fee is $280. This fee includes the fee for the mandatory class for divorcing parents. There are additional fees that are usually involved. If your spouse won’t sign the petition as a co-petitioner, you may need a process server to serve the petition and summons on him (or her). Private process servers charge around $50. The Sheriff’s Office charges $51.20 to serve someone with divorce papers in the Monument zip code area. Once you are served with the petition and summons, you must file a response to the petition. The fee for filing a response is $116.

• Major: Implants and bridges likely won’t be covered unless specified in the policy. • Preventive: Exams and cleaning are standard, but extra services such a fluoride might not be covered. Read the fine print: • Policies don’t always agree on what is basic or major work. If you have a missing tooth and want to consider getting a bridge, it’s possible the plan won’t cover it because the tooth wasn’t in place when the policy started. • Is there a waiting period? Is it for all procedures, or just the more expensive ones such as crowns? • Is there a yearly maximum? Most companies cut off benefits at $1,000 per year.

DENTAL INSURANCE

B

efore you buy dental insurance, consider whether it will actually save you any money. Investigate a number of types of policies before you buy.

Call your own dentist office to see what plans it accepts. Be sure the insurance company you’re considering has your dentist on its list. If you know you need work done, ask your dentist for a list and compare it to what the insurance will cover for each procedure. Consider the type of policy you want: • Traditional -- You pay a monthly premium and have a percentage of your costs covered. • Direct Reimbursement -- You pick any dentist and pay for the work, and the insurance company sends you a check. • In-Network -- You’re required to go to a dentist on the plan’s list, but you might not be charged extra fees because the policy dictates which dentist you see and how much the dentist can charge. Consider the level of coverage the plan offers: • Basic: Extractions, which might or might not cover root canals.

• Existing conditions? Chances are the policy won’t cover those. • Are emergencies covered? Be sure to do the math. Every year the deductible will reset. Add up your monthly premiums plus the deductible. That’s the amount you’ll pay on a yearly basis. If you don’t have a dentist, check the policy information for dentists in your area. Then call to find out which offices are taking new patients. Ask to be sure they’re still accepting that insurance, as not all of them will take a new patient. Find more information on the American Dental Association’s website: www.ada.org. Put “dental insurance” in the search box.

You can get all the forms you need for free from the Colorado Courts website, or you can buy a package of the forms from the clerk’s office for $25. If you can’t reach an agreement with your spouse as to all matters, the Court will require you to attend a mediation before it will let you have a final orders hearing. The Court’s Office Of Dispute Resolution charges $120 per party for a two-hour mediation. Once the case is completed and the decree has been granted, you may need certified copies of various documents in order to comply with the requirements of financial institutions, etc., to prove that you are divorced and the terms of the divorce. The charge for certified copies is 75 cents per page, and $20 for certification of the document. There is also a $5 search fee. If you order all your documents at one time, you may only be charged one certification fee. The fees for certified documents in a divorce case involving minor children can easily run over $40. If both parties need certified copies, and they usually do, it will be double that. Your Court fees in a divorce case can be as little as $230. In a case involving minor children where the parties can’t reach a total agreement, the total fees for both parties will typically be closer to $600. This assumes that you are doing everything yourself! If you retain an attorney to represent you, the attorney will pay the courtassociated fees from the attorney’s retainer fee. This is one reason why attorney retainer fees are as big as they are. Good luck to you if you are contemplating an exit from the marriage zone, and remember that there are significant Court fees involved if you decide to go through with it.
