nything from any past decade can be considered retro, but it’s the 1950s, 60s and 70s that are the most popular eras for nostalgia. Second-hand shops and vintage clothing stores are thriving in an economy that isn’t – think Retrospect Dry Goods in Monument. Drive-in restaurants and diners are back and going strong – think Rosie’s Diner in Monument. Those three decades – 1950s, 1960s and 1970s – were wild when it came to fashion, cars and design in general. From avocado refrigerators to flowered wallpaper to bell bottoms, the trends cascaded in every which way.

IN-HOUSE RETRO Going retro in any room of the house? All that’s needed to start is a bit of color, something vinyl and maybe some shag carpeting. Don’t be shy about bold colors and lots of textures. Mix ‘em up and swirl them around. Options include (not all for the same room) a purple, vinyl chair; a mustard yellow fabric chair, a pink shag throw rug, an avocado refrigerator and stove; a room done in black and white, with a hint of red; a bright blue lamp shade – anything or anywhere that denies color coordination. Add a lava lamp, door beads or a few abstract art pieces; and, presto, you’ve got retro. After all, the 60s and 70s were the decades of peace, love and anything goes. Say “funky.”

RETRO PETS Ch-Ch-Ch-Chia Pets - You can still purchase those little plants that sprout from a terracotta figurine today. They first arrived on the scene in 1982 in the shape of a ram and have added many other animal shapes over the years. They can be found in more recent years shaped like characters including Sponge Bob and Shrek. Pet Rock – Who would have thought that a bar conversation about the trouble with having pets would spring forth the idea of a rock as a perfect pet? In 1975, you could spend $3.75 for a Pet Rock and rest assured that there were no added expenses of vet bills, obedience training or toys. Gary Dahl’s little invention made him a millionaire. Go figure.

daughter commanded the fashion runway in the 50s. It was the beginning of rock ‘n’ roll and those looped skirts played into those jump-jiving days. It was also “cool” in those days to own a fur coat. Although highly retro, wearing a real fur today isn’t so politically correct among many groups. But then there’s faux fur. Hairstyles were all about updos and pageboys. Mod 60s Mod, hippie, mini: Many styles born in the 60s are retropopular or back today. A somewhat fitted shift dress about 8 inches above the knee found its way to fashion in the baby boomer adolescent and teen years. Wild prints and colors donned the 60s as well. After Cher began baring her midriff, gypsy-like clothing sprung up on the scene. Big, wide pants with a loud print pattern and a matching blouse that often tied above the midriff became a daring but favorite look. The pill box hat and suit (think Jackie Kennedy) was “happening” for the dressed-up look. Velvet formals were in style, too. Some of the “cool” guys (think Fonzie in “Happy Days”) elected to wear leather jackets, white Ts and jeans (and oilslick-like hair). Other “cool” guys like the Beatles opted for the fitted or mod look. Eventually, the mini got smaller – shorts were in – and tan, smooth legs. Welcome Schick. Hairstyles shortened as well. Welcome the pixie cut. 70s Midi, Mini or Maxi Disco brought a loose set of rules to the fashion industry. Hot pants, spandex tops, shiny and clingy Lycra stretch pants and halter jumpsuits and that John Travolta-in-Saturday-Night-Fever-suit all made it to the dazzling, dizzying disco dance floor.

A Retro Tour... Continued from Page 2 And who can forget men who wore satin shirts with high collars that they unbuttoned practically to their waist, showing off a deeply tanned chest and a gaudy gold medallion. As the mini got shorter, women also decided that long dresses and midi skirts were in vogue as well. The halter-top-pant-suit look was “hot.” Wide legs and naked shoulders oozed glamour yet casual. The granny dress was not about granny. Almost all 70s girls and women had a granny dress: long, floweredprint, high neckline with a bit of lace and long sleeves – straight or puffed. The empire dress showed up in the 70s: a fitted high waste – whether short or long. Hairstyles of the 70s included the bob, and lest we not forget the shag, which made its way through the millennium.

THEY’RE BACK… Fashion designers get plenty of their modern-day design ideas from the 50s, 60s and 70s; and, because of its popularity, the retro look has been reproduced for major retailers as well. Take a gander at the old-comeback-as-new fashion trends. Skinny ties for men - The skinny tie was originally worn in the 50s – bright colors included bright blues, greens and pinks. Just watch the T.V. show “Mad Men” for proof. In this era, the slim-Jim tie was always understated – patterns were simple and deep reds were popular. Sunglasses - Ray Ban Wayfarer sunglasses

came on the scene in the 50s. They were big glasses, but petite actress Audrey Hepburn brought them to fame when they just about concealed her face in the 1961 film “Breakfast at Tiffany’s. In the 60s, polarized glasses were introduced. The 70s sunglasses had large lenses as well, with angles of all sorts shaped as frames.

THAT’S WHEN

For many, cars of the 50s, 60s and 70s were equally important to fashion trends. What good is the look without the wheels?

THE ORIGINAL MONUMENT FARMER’S MARKET

Whether it’s 50s, 60s or 70s, convertibles have always been favorites among car lovers. 1950s cars were colorful, to say the least. How about a Pepto Bismol-pink Cadillac convertible? The Cadillac (and other makes) also came in turquoise, cranberry red, bright blue, sunny yellow and so on. It was the norm to have a different colored body and a different colored top in those days; and, no matter the colors, cars of the 50s were big and boxy and some had wings jetting out the back.

DRIVE IT IN You’ve got the clothes, you’ve got the car…where to next? Fortunately, you never have to get out of that Ford T-bird if you don’t want to because you can head out for a drive-in dinner and drive-in movie. First, dinner. Pull up to the neighborhood drive-in with your date or a car full of friends and get waited on by a carhop on skates. A Dallas man, J.G. Kirby may have been the first to come up with the drive-in theme in the early 1920s when he opened The Pig Stand, specializing in barbeque. Over the next few decades, the drive-in slowly gained popularity and really hit its stride in the 1950s when that Chevy Bel Air convertible also became cool. The drive-in restaurant was a place to see and be seen, as was the drive-in-theater. Drive-in theaters came onto the scene in 1933, started by New Jersey’s Richard M. Hollingshead who hung up a sheet in his backyard and strapped a Kodak projec-

ago with ads touting the benefits of their product. This line is a killer, especially today: “If sugar’s so popular, how come so many kids are thin?” The ad shows a close up of a glass of Coke or Pepsi and a diatribe of words promoting sugar for good health. This ad debuted in the 70s. • Another ad from Sugar Information features a woman holding a pop bottle, sipping through a straw. The caption: “Have a soft drink before your main meal. Sugar just might be the willpower you need to curb your appetite.” Hmmmm … • You won’t see this one on a billboard today. The tag line: “Tired of being skinny?” Pictured is a bare-chested, well-built male surrounded by two bikini-clad women. This is a 60s ad promoting a weight-gain drink. • Another one you won’t see today. “If you want to be popular, you can’t be skinny.” Wate-ON product How about ads citing happiness is a … for the little woman: • “Christmas morning, she’ll be happy with a Hoover.” 1969

• A 70s ad by Mazola Oil: “Bill Warner’s new wife promised to love, honor and polyunsaturate.”

• “How a Hamilton washer and dryer can get a marriage off on the right foot … and keep it that way.” The guy on the advertisement is in checkered pants (and a Beatle’s haircut) and the wife is wearing fishnet stockings. The washer and dryer is, of course, avocado.

tor onto the hood of his car. Hollingshead lined up cars in his driveway and put them on various sizes of blocks so that the inhabitants of each car could see the “screen.” There are still about 500 drive-in theaters remaining around the country today. Most have been lost to increasing real estate values and developers snapping up the land. But, the drive-in is still a great entertainment avenue for families with a carload of kids to entertain for the evening at a low cost.

Patterns and textures will serve an important function in your decorating. They will add interest and character to an otherwise plain color scheme. Your choice of patterns and textures will follow your decorating style, the limitations of your environment and you personal preferences. There are so many choices of available that the task of selecting textures can be overwhelming. If you keep these rules of thumb in mind you will be able to make knowledgeable selections and maybe even use optical illusions to create a dramatic arrangement. Patterns can effect how you see proportion. By following these rules of thumb you can wisely select patterns to enhance any room. • Complex Patterns that use several colors and diagonal, criss-crossing lines are busy for your eye. They can liven up a large area, but it may be overwhelming for a small room. • Vertical Lines add height to a short room, or add more height to a high ceiling.

High contrast patterns create an energetic feeling and colors close in value create a more subdued environment. • Texture affects color. Rough textures will absorb light while smooth textures will reflect light.

Always remember to select patterns and textures that appeal to you and work well with your overall plan. It is always wise to collect samples of what you love be it pictures, paint chips or color swatches. Feel free to experiment, remember as a renter, if you buy it, you keep it. If you love something in an apartment, you will probably love it your house too! For more information go to www. FlooringandDesignCenter.com.

TAI YI HEALING

W

hy is it so important to heal emotionally, mentally, and physically? Some people are overly familiar with the pain; that it seems easier to simply survive with the pain instead of healing it. Some may also have chronic physical pain, such as in the hips and knees, headaches, migraines, sinus infections, or fatigue, to mention a few. All of these symptoms originate emotionally before it ends up in the physical body. Even a person who does not show too many physical symptoms can have emotional and mental pain. Some may want to heal because they are simply tired of their pain. Some may want to heal because they feel the world is coming to an end in 2012. Apparently, there is a thought circulating that the closer we move towards 2012, ones need to be healing in order to be saved when the earth splits into two Earths. With this thought, the people who are working on their healing will go to the ‘good Earth’ and those who are not will stay on the ‘bad Earth’. There is also a thought circulating that reptiles, masquerading as humans, will control the world in 2012. Both of these thoughts are false and simply incite fear in people rather than encourage healing. The reason to heal is because this is your life. Why would one choose to stay in pain if there was a solution? There are different answers to this question. To name a few is, many have

given up, many do not know where to turn, and many are in denial of their pain. If one knows he or she is in pain AND desires to heal it, there are solutions. Sometimes, what one needs is to know the bigger picture aside from simply removing depression, anger, fear, or passiveness.

I have always been taught that everyone has a purpose in life. Many are not aware of that purpose or have confused the purpose for various reasons. One reason to heal is to find and live one’s purpose. As we move closer to 2012, what will happen is an increase of fear of survival, more government regulations, and more issues with our economy. If ones are working on their fears and developing passion for their lives, they will feel less association with fear of survival that is and will continue to be incited in our society.

Estate Planning Seminar Who: Jeff Burum, CPA, MBA, MA, IAR and Mitch Hersh & Michelle O’Hara of Pacific Life Insurance Company What: Jeff, Mitch and Michelle will be hosting an estate planning seminar, entitled: "Leaving a Legacy" on July 13th from 6:30-8:30pm in Monument, CO. When: Tuesday, July 13th, 2010 - 6:30-8:30pm Where: 16055 Old Forest Point, Suite 300—Monument, CO 80132 www.JeffBurum.com

A Tai Yi exercise that can address the reason to heal is Light of Tranquility. Light of Tranquility is for ones who need to know why it is important for them, as individuals, to heal. This is for ones to see beyond their own pain and to know the deeper individual reason to heal. The person receiving this treatment, assuming it is fully accepted, will feel contentment. That person will begin understanding the need to heal and not just think about the need to heal.

MOMENTS IN TIME THE HISTORY CHANNEL

• On June 15, 1877, Henry Ossian Flipper, born a slave in Thomasville, Ga., in 1856, is the first black cadet to graduate from the United States Military Academy at West Point. Flipper was appointed a second lieutenant in the all-black 10th Cavalry at Fort Sill in the Indian Territory. • On June 19, 1885, the Statue of Liberty arrives in New York Harbor as a symbol of Franco-American friendship. Nine years late in arriving, the 300-foot statue was a gift from the people of France as a celebration of the Declaration of Independence centenary in 1876. • On June 14, 1909, folksinger and Academy Award-winning actor Burl Ives is born near Hunt City, Ill. Ives is perhaps best known for his voiceover work as the jovial Sam the Snowman in the animated Christmas special “Rudolph the RedNosed Reindeer,” which included the song “A Holly Jolly Christmas.” • On June 18, 1923, the first Checker Cab rolls off the line at the Checker Cab Manu-

facturing Company in Kalamazoo, Mich. The company then employed some 700 people. The last Checker Cab rolled off the line in Kalamazoo in 1982. • On June 20, 1941, after a long and bitter struggle on the part of Henry Ford against cooperation with organized labor unions, Ford Motor Company signs its first contract with the United Automobile Workers of America and Congress of Industrial Organizations (UAW-CIO). • On June 16, 1965, Bob Dylan records “Like a Rolling Stone.” The sales staff at Columbia Records did not like the song due to its length, 6 minutes 34 seconds. Two radio DJs heard a bootlegged song and demanded copies. Sales got its last dig in by chopping “Like a Rolling Stone” in half and putting it on separate sides of 45s, but a re-spliced full version was what radio stations played. • On June 17, 1972, five men are arrested for breaking into the Democratic National Committee offices at the Watergate Hotel in Washington, D.C. Senate investigations eventually revealed that President Richard Nixon had been personally involved in the subsequent cover-up of the break-in. (c) 2010 King Features Synd., Inc.

YARD SALE TIPS

(Part 1 of 3) (Collect all Three Articles!)

Yard sales can bring in great pocket change and sometimes a chunk of bills. What you reel in can depend on the quality of the goods, but a lot depends on marketing and presentation. Here are some tips to help you get the most money from your sale: TIMING - Plan your sale around paydays, after the first or 15th of a month. - Avoid a yard sale on major holiday weekends. - Hold your sale on the weekend and when the weather is mild. - If you have the time, make it a two-day extravaganza and make sure to have a friend or family member on hand with you. GETTING THE GOODS - Remember The Golden Rule of garage sales: "Anything goes." If you have doubts about the value of one of your items, put it out anyway. You never know when a complete stranger may want to buy your used flip-flops. - Think about where you're moving your stuff and what items might be obsolete there. A snowblower in Miami? And don't forget that some items might cost more to move than to replace--firewood, for example. - Clear clutter. If you haven't used something in more than a year, it's probably good garage-sale fodder. - Ask family members if it is OK to sell their stuff. It might have sentimental value. - Give boxes to family members. Ask them to put in two or three items. Allow them to keep the money from the sale of those items. - Toss broken and unmatched items. Or stick those items in a free rummage box. - Let family, friends and neighbors know you're having a sale. They may want to participate.

ORGANIZING YOUR STASH - Go through items for creditcard receipts, money or mementos. - Clean & repair your items. - Use sawhorses and plywood to create a table. Borrow tables. - Sort, group and present your items like a professional showroom. Clothing should be clean, sized and sorted by gender. - Group small things in plastic bags. Sell items, such as hair ornaments, in bulk. - Organize books, CDs and DVDs with the spines up so shoppers can read the titles. - Arrange items by category. - Rearrange your merchandise as items are sold. - Use newspapers to wrap fragile goods and plastic bags as totes.

ADVERTISING - Place a classified ad in local papers, featuring your best or most unusual items. It's also good to take advantage of any free advertising in your community i.e. supermarket bulletin boards, church, school or local Internet community. Put up your signs a day or two before your sale. You can also have your sale announced for free by a local radio station that hosts a swap-and-shop program. Compose a short ad to run on Web sites. - Learn your jurisdiction's rules about placing temporary signs. - Use bright neon-colored paper and big lettering for signs. Add arrows for direction. - Create a contingency plan if it rains. Put all the information on a sign.

• It was multi-talented Sir Francis Bacon -- he was a statesman, lawyer, scientist, philosopher and author -- who made the following sage observation: “If a man will begin with certainties, he shall end in doubts; but if he will be content to begin with doubts, he shall end in certainties.” • One of the most highly praised actresses of our time, Meryl Streep, holds the record for Academy Award nominations; she’s been awarded the Oscar twice, but has been nominated an impressive 16 times. • The highest known life insurance payout occurred in 1970, when the widow of a cattle rancher was awarded $18 million in benefits. • Those who study such things say that Italians drink, on average, 26 gallons of wine every year. • It’s just common sense that people tend to behave better when they’re being watched, but it may come as a surprise that it doesn’t seem to matter whether or not the watcher is real. Researchers made this discovery in an experiment conducted at the University of Newcastle in Australia. In a coffee lounge where paying for the beverage was optional, a picture of a pair of eyes was placed next to the price list at some times, and at other times a picture of flowers accompanied the list. On days when the eyes were posted, more than three times as much money was donated than on days when the flowers were in the same spot. • People magazine reportedly paid $6 million for photos of Jennifer Lopez’s twin babies, Emme and Max.

BETWEEN RELINQUISHING CONTROL AND SELFPRESERVATION By Cathy R. Deschaine M.A.LC

O

ne of my favorite movies is Grand Canyon with a host of stars like Steve Martin, Kevin Kline, and Danny Glover. In one of the scenes Steve Martin who plays a movie director is shot in the leg by a robber who only wanted his Rolex. The gun shot splinters Martin’s leg and he needs many surgeries and weeks of rehabilitation to restore him. Moments before he was walking out of a Nicks game with his friend Kevin Kline . They were philosophizing about control . Martin states “control, control, control ; we all want control; and what are we all trying to control? Our fear.”

• Between 1960 and 2006, the average American’s production of solid waste -- including everything from Ironic how the thing he filmed most, paper packaging to lawn clippings violence and evil came knocking on -- increased by 150 percent to 4.5 his door only minutes after he left pounds every day.

YOGA MEETS FITNESS!

T

he practice of yoga, in itself, is powerful! The practice of yoga for fitness even more so! Yoga based fitness regimes are booming in the health club industry; popular for athletes and exercise enthusiasts alike. Yoga has been used for centuries as an alternative approach healing. It is associated with an increased sense of awareness, meditation, relaxation and stretching. But did you know yoga has the ability to boost your stamina and the ability to overcome perceived limits with weight lifting, athletic sports and outdoor activities? Many athletes are discovering just that!

FOR ATHLETES Yoga can help athletes with flexibility, range of motion, concentration, stress, tension, and cardiovascular health. Many of these things aren’t covered in “normal” athletic workouts, yet all of them are important in order to improve an athlete’s overall performance. Yoga teaches you how to breathe efficiently, economically and deep. Learning this technique will allow you to push your limits and “take you to your edge of intensity” and perceived ability without fatigue.

TO ENHANCE EXISTING EXERCISE PROGRAMS Implementing any form of yoga can enhance existing exercise regimens. Yoga requires a significant amount of core strength, balance, body awareness and muscle adaptation. It can help prevent and heal existing injuries, and improve muscle stabilization, no matter what your age or level of fitness. Yoga can be easily adapted for youth, aging adults, people with disabilities and special needs. It will help with stress control, mental clarity, blood pressure, and heart performance during exercise. It will stretch what is tight and strengthening what is weak.

FOR PERFORMANCE AND STRENGTH The physiological principle behind fitnessbased yoga programs is similar to any other strength conditioning or athletic training program. They both produce overload and adaptation to the muscle being worked, and they both enhance strength while increasing muscle mass. The only main difference is that a yoga pose uses individual body weight for resistance; there is no dependency for external weight loads, however, external loads may be applied. Muscles may never grow to the full extent of body builders, but yoga will increase muscle strength and stamina.

release. Holding or “moving through” a yoga sequence does the exact same thing, but it also stretches the muscles while they are being worked. Actually elongating muscle fibers during performance. Like any other resistance-based fitness program, yoga-based fitness programs also focus on body alignment and periods of “holds” during imposed demands, thus it forces the isolated muscles to work harder and harder the longer a pose is held.

FAT

STRENGTH TRAINING AND YOGA COMBINED How many times have you heard people say, “I just don’t have time to do strength training or yoga” or “I’d like to try lifting weights or participate in a yoga class, but I don’t think I have the patience to do it”? Take away those excuses and try a combination of both! You’ll end up with a perfect, more time-efficient and resultsoriented match. Strength training and flexibility benefits in one stop! Some of the more popular combination classes offered today include: Yoga Fit™, SmartFlow®, YES Training®, YogaWorks® and Yoga tune Up®. If you can’t find a class that suits your needs, try a sample “interval” combination on your own. All you need is a mat and some hand-held weights. Give it a try!

Pick two or three yoga sequences that involve a combination of static poses. For example: A Standing Fold (forward bend), Swan Dive (airplane) and a Standing Twist (spinal rotation). Move through the sequences three to four times, holding the poses for longer periods of time to promote muscle lengthening and deep opening in the joints (10-15 seconds each).

Return to starting position and pick up your weights. Select two to three weighted sequences that involve a particular body part. For Example: An Overhead Press, Upright Row and Lateral Raise for the shoulders. Perform 10 – 12 repetitions of each weighted sequences taking a few seconds rest in between. It is important that you move slow and controlled while lifting the weights. Focus on your breathing. Rest for a few seconds, then return to a second set of yoga sequences that involve longer static holds. Return to starting position and pick up your weights. Repeat any series of yoga poses sequenced with weighted exercises in between - perform until you reach muscle fatigue. Relax at the end! A traditional yoga ending allows the body to relax and let go, breath and tune into their yoga experience.

MUSCLE SPECIFICITY AND ISOLATION Similar to weight training, yoga sequences synergistically isolate specific muscle groups during a particular pose. Strength gains are specific to the muscle (or groups) being worked. Like any resistance exercise, muscles fibers go through phases of isolation, contraction, extension and

few years ago, seniors began receiving invitations in the mail to attend a free lunch at a nice location and hear about investment information. Experts would be in attendance to answer any questions.

“FREE LUNCH SCAMS AIMED AT SENIORS

It wasn’t all on the level, however. The Securities and Exchange Commission got involved when it turned out that seniors were facing high-pressure sales tactics -- being pushed to sign documents they didn’t understand and being forced into investments that really didn’t exist. The SEC issued a report after doing a study that showed just how widespread the problem was. Things have changed. The newest incarnation of the “free lunch scam is a bit more dangerous, as shown in an updated version of the study. Here’s how it works: You still get the

Serving Anne & Mann’s Gourmet Ice Cream For those of you that are vegetarians, replace the chicken with tofu and vegetable base. Or try it with potatoes in place of the chicken. You can always replace any of the veggies with other veggies. Go for it! The coconut milk is the fattening part so you could leave it out but it will change the flavor.

1. Cook rice according to directions. 2. Cut chicken into ½ inch chunks. 3. Cut carrots lengthwise down the center and then into thin ½ moons. Cut broccoli into small florets. Julian onions. Cut Celery into thin ½ moons. Dice Eggplant into ½ inch chunks. 4. Heat oil in a large wok then sauté chicken. 5. Add rest of veggies and sauté.

Eggplant is always a tricky one. When picking out an eggplant, there is a trick. If you look at the end (I call it the belly button, on the opposite end of the stem), look for it to have a line as opposed to a dot. This will be sweet not bitter.

his is one of my favorite recipes. Mom always made it on special occasions. Trust me, when you make it, it won’t last long. The moist cake is so delicious and the seven minute frosting is to die for. I hope that this becomes a tradition in your family as well.

FRESH ORANGE CAKE RECIPE 3/4 cup butter 2 cups sugar 4 eggs (separated) 3/4 cup milk 3 cups flour 3 teaspoons baking powder 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Cream butter and sugar. Add wellbeater egg yolks. Sift the flour and baking powder and alternately add milk and flour to the mixture. Add stiffly beaten egg whites and the vanilla extract. Pour batter into two 9” greased and lined on the bottom with waxed paper pans. Bake 25-30 minutes at 375 degrees. Let cool before pouring on the orange syrup.

Cut the orange rind off the orange. Cut the rind into thin strips. In a large saucepan, combine the juice, sugar and thin orange strips. Bring to a simmer and cook for 30 minutes, or until the syrup is thick. Strain the syrup. Poke holes in the top of the cake then pour the warm strained syrup all over the top so that it soaks through.

SEVEN MINUTE FROSTING 1 cup sugar 1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar 3 tablespoons water 2 unbeaten egg whites 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Put all ingredients but the vanilla extract in the top of a double boiler once the water has started to boil. Beat until it stands in peaks. In place of the water, you could substitute 3 tablespoons of orange juice. Put one cake layer on a plate and spread the top with the frosting. Put the second layer on top and frost top and sides.

ORANGE SYRUP 1 orange 1 1/2 cups orange juice 1 1/2 cups sugar

New DVD Releases for Week of June 14, 2010 PICKS OF THE WEEK “The Book of Eli” (R) -- This is the Hughes Brothers directorial foray into the postApocalyptic future genre. On the plus side: A wicked intense Denzel Washington. On the downside: No Thunderdome. Washington stars as the titular Eli, a man in possession of a book that supposedly will rescue humanity from the devastation of the recent apocalypse. He heads west along the Highway of Death,

opening cans of whoop-ass on any malcontents along the way. Eventually, he ends up in a town where a corrupt and evil bar owner (Gary Oldman) decides he will do whatever it takes to gain possession of Eli’s book. “The Book of Eli” is a pretty good picture. It’s not awesome, but it doesn’t stink either. While it doesn’t have Tina Turner with big hair, the film does have Mila Kunis. And I’m fine with that. “The Stepfather” [Blu Ray] (R) -- If you thought Terry O’Quinn’s portrayal of John Locke in “Lost” was creepy, wait until you see him with hair! “The Stepfather” is the cult 1987 thriller about a guy named Jerry Blake (O’Quinn), who longs for the perfect idyllic suburban life -- beautiful wife, family, white picket fence, the whole shebang. He marries Shelly Hack and becomes stepfather to her 16-year-old daughter. The daughter suspects that Jerry’s Ward Cleaver persona masks something more sinister and dangerous. And she’s right. If you’re looking for a

thriller that’ll chill you to the bone, you have got see this movie.

DOG OF THE WEEK “When In Rome” (PG-13) -- Kristen Bell stars in this ridiculous chick flick about a frantic, career obsessed woman who goes to Italy for her sister’s wedding, and like every driven, ambitious woman in movies like this, she realizes that her goals and successes are meaningless because she doesn’t have a man. Excuse me while I pause for three minutes to make pffffffrt sounds with my armpit. So she goes to The Fountain of Love and steals five coins, as you do. But wait! These aren’t just any coins. No Sirree! These are Magical Coins that summon the lovelorn men who tossed them into the fountain, and put a love spell on them, making those poor saps infatuated with Veronica Mars. Now she has to find a way to break the spells, because

16

all the guys are kinda gross or weird -- except for the Hot Guy you see next to her in the movie poster. Is his love for her real? When she breaks the spell on him, will he be The One -- The Big Boy who will define her life? Pffffffrt.

une is a popular month for weddings. If you’re getting married this month, you’ve got a lot on your mind, but after the honeymoon is over, it’s time to start thinking of the key activities of building a life together — one of which is creating a long-term investment strategy. To build such a strategy, you and your spouse will need to take several steps. Here are some of the most important ones: Identify your goals. People can enter marriage at different stages of life. But whether you’re a young newlywed or a baby boomer entering a second marriage, both you and your spouse will have a set of goals you want to achieve, such as saving for a down payment on a home, saving for college for your children, building resources for a comfortable retirement, purchasing a vacation home, supporting charitable organizations and so on. It’s important that, as a couple, you identify those financial goals that are most important to you. List your debts and assets. Generally speaking, the fewer “surprises you and your spouse bring to a marriage, in terms of financial issues, the better. If you haven’t already done so, put your debts and assets “on the table so you’re both aware of what you owe and what you own. This knowledge will be invaluable when you begin making the investment moves necessary to achieve your goals. Discuss your investment styles. You and your spouse no doubt share many traits, but you will also have some

Start an emergency fund. Of all the investment-related moves you can make early in your marriage, none may be quite as important as building an emergency fund containing six to 12 months’ worth of living expenses in a liquid account. Without this emergency fund, you could quickly go into debt or be forced to dip into a long-term investment if you have to meet an unexpected, and unexpectedly large, expense, such as a major car repair, a new appliance or a medical bill. Get some help. If you can make the right investment-related moves right from the beginning of your marriage, you’ll almost certainly make your lives easier. But investing can be complicated, so you and your spouse could well benefit from getting assistance from a professional financial advisor — someone who can help you create and maintain an investment portfolio that’s appropriate for your specific goals, risk tolerance and time horizon. By making the right investment moves, right from the start of your marriage, you and your spouse may be giving yourselves a “wedding gift that may benefit you for years to come. So plan your moves carefully — and enjoy your lives together. This article was written by Edward Jones for use by your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor For additional information, contact:

differences — and one of those differences may be in your investment styles and preferences. For example, you may be an aggressive investor, while your spouse might be more conservative. MVEA HOSTS 69TH ANNUAL MEETING OF MEMBERS By Deborah Skillicorn

M

ountain View Electric Association’s 69th Annual Meeting of Members was Thursday, June 3 at the Limon High School. Approximately 400 people attended the event which included a barbeque dinner, entertainment, business meeting and $2100 cash in door prizes. The meeting is an opportunity for members to have direct contact with the board and staff of MVEA. It is also an opportunity for the board and staff to make members aware of certain issues that could have an impact on the cooperative.

n my last article I discussed the first of several forms of Alternative Dispute Resolution (“ADR”): arbitration. ADR provides ways of resolving legal disputes without (necessarily) resorting to litigation in the courts, and without (necessarily) the time and expense of litigation in the courts. Another form of ADR is mediation. In a past article I discussed the role mediation plays in litigation in the state district courts – in Colorado, it is mandatory for all civil litigants to participate in non-binding mediation prior to actually going to trial. This is required not only to lessen the trial caseload of the courts themselves (and the Fourth Judicial District Court – Teller and El Paso Counties – had, at last check, the heaviest caseload in the State of Colorado), but also to decrease legal costs to litigants by settling disputes at an earlier stage, and before the enormous costs of trial preparation and prosecution/defense are incurred.

teractive polling session. Each adult attendee was given a “clicker,” or remote polling device, to answer 15 multiple choice questions that were displayed on the screen. This gave instant feedback to the directors about how members felt about certain pertinent issues that may affect MVEA or electric rates. The questions and results will be available on MVEA’s website at www.mvea.coop. Attendees felt the polling was a worthwhile exercise. MVEA would like to thank everyone who attended for supporting their electric cooperative and encourage everyone to attend next year’s meeting.

Allen E. Gresham and Bud Paddock were elected to serve a three year term on the board of directors. Thank you to all of the candidates for their willingness to serve. Something new for this year’s gathering was an in-

The most common form of mediation I have seen (and, in my opinion, the most effective), is what is called “shuttle mediation”. In shuttle mediation the disputants are in separate rooms, and the mediator shuttles back and forth between the rooms. The mediator first describes his process, and covers the ground rules of the mediation. Usually the parties are asked to sign a mediation agreement, covering basic terms and conditions of mediation.

Most commonly the mediator speaks first with the “plaintiff”; i.e., the disputant who initiated the claims against the other disputant. The mediator then speaks with the other disputants in turn. The mediator will point out and discuss the weaknesses he sees in a disputant’s case, and the strengths he sees in the opposing disputant’s case. He will also discuss likely outcomes at a trial. Where mediators are really valuable is in crafting solutions to disputes of which the disputants may not have thought, and/or which a court could not order. Disputants may or may not be represented by attorneys at mediation. It is not necessary, as, unlike arbitration, it is not a private or mini trial. Unlike arbitration, mediation is not usually binding; because it is not binding, it is not appealable. Resolution of the dispute is not imposed upon the disputants; if no agreement is reached, mediation ends. If agreement is reached between the disputants, that agreement is final and nonappealable. If the disputants agree on a settlement, the mediator will draft a brief, binding, memorandum memorializing the terms and conditions of the settlement, which is signed by each disputant and his or her attorney, if any. It is then up the disputants (or their attorneys, if they have attorneys), to draft a detailed settlement agreement. This need not be filed with a court if the disputants have not yet proceeded to initiate litigation, unless and until a breach of the agreement occurs. I would say, in my experience, in mediation we have reached settlement at least half of the time. I find it very effective in reducing costs to my clients, and speeding resolution of disputes. In my next article I will discuss other forms of ADR, in addition to arbitration and mediation.

An election of board members from Districts 3 and 5 was conducted. There were four candidates from District 3 and two candidates running from District 5. The election results were as follows: District 3 – Allen E. Gresham, 1979; Boyd Bailey, 779; Michael de Bettencourt, 883 and Thomas J. Ertel, 327. District 5 – B.D. “Bud” Paddock, 2665 and Jerry Miller, 1284.

Prior to mediation, the disputants usually provide a confidential settlement statement to the mediator, summarizing the nature of the dispute, describing the disputants, setting forth disputed and undisputed facts, setting forth the law the disputants believe applies, and even making legal arguments for their case. It is often recommended that the disputants include assessments of the strengths and weaknesses of their cases. The disputants may also provide copies of evidentiary exhibits proving their case.

Above are the grand prize winners for the evening. Left to right are Jeanine Ertel of Elbert who won $200, Frances Sprock of Ramah winning $300 and Lynn Looper of Calhan as the $500 door prize winner. Forty members won $25 prizes, one member won a $50 Lowe’s gift card, Ralph Brent of Genoa won $100 cash and Robert Knowles of Peyton won a $150 credit on his bill.
