ccording to the experts in child development and child outcomes, it truly does take a village to raise a child. Research tells us it’s not just parents and teachers who have a great impact on children. It’s a whole lot more – from long-term mentoring relationships to small acts of kindness by a neighbor or community member – that makes a difference in a child’s life.
A MONTH AND MORE July is designated as National Make a Difference to Children Month. This month-long event is sponsored by the Hugs and Hope Foundation, founded by Marsha Jordan. Jordan, an author, started the charitable organization in

The Hugs and Hope Foundation provides an avenue for people to give a simple gift to a child who is suffering from a critical illness. Their Web site, www.hugsandhope.org, provides a listing of children who are in need of prayers and contact in the form of wish granting, gifts, balloons and letters. Hugs and Hope calls these letters “happy mail,” and they can make a difference in the life of an ailing child.

There are many ways – small, big, formal or informal – to make a difference to a child.
WHY ALL THE EFFORT? Children today have a lot to face – drug and alcohol addiction, neglect and poverty, to name a few. The organization MENTOR/National Mentoring Partnership estimates there are 3 million children in formal mentoring programs right now; but another 14.6 million youth are still at risk of falling through the cracks and not becoming successful members of society when they reach adulthood. Risk factors they cite include substance abuse, delinquent behavior, dropping out or performing poorly in school and having sex at an early age.

MENTORING Formal mentoring programs are very successful, especially if the relationship is of a longer term, such as a year or more. Shorter term relationships within a for-
mal program are not quite as successful in changing a child’s future outlook. There are numerous organizations offering formal mentoring programs for children: • • • • • •
Big Brothers/Big Sisters The Buddy System Boys and girls clubs (i.e., scouts) Career Beginnings BELONG Church youth programs
Seventy-one percent of mentoring is done informally through teachers, coaches, church leaders, friends and neighbors without guidelines or specific mentoring programs. These relationships are also deemed successful.
MEASURING SUCCESS It was Lady Bird Johnson who said that “children are likely to live up to what you believe of them.” Successful mentoring has been proven to foster positive development in many areas: • More positive attitudes towards parents and elders • Increased helping behavior • Better attitude toward school and education along with fewer absences from school • Increased interest in the pursuit of higher education

• Less substance use and other negative behavior
• 22 percent were helped by someone in their youth
• Less violent behavior
And, 96 percent of those who mentor would recommend mentoring to others.
WHO ARE THE MENTORS? According to a 2005 study conducted by MENTOR, the majority of both formal and informal mentors tend to be in the baby boomer age range with the next highest percentage in the 35-44 range. The 18-24 age group attracts mostly the informal mentor. Along with the 18-24 age range, the 65 and older group are generally the least likely to mentor a child. About 60 percent of informal mentors report some type of other relationship with their mentees, i.e., friends, neighbors or family members; and only about 21 percent of the formal mentors had a prior relationship with their mentees. The same study gives insight into what motivates a mentor: • 82 percent want to help young people succeed • 76 percent want to make a difference in someone’s life • 43 percent want to give back to the community

IT’S ALL ABOUT WHO YOU KNOW Mentors don’t always specifically seek out opportunities to mentor. They usually know someone who is a mentor, participate in an organization that provides mentoring or know someone who mentors.

About 44 million current non-mentors report they are willing to mentor given the right circumstances – mostly time and support. The MENTOR survey found that potential mentors would give serious consideration to mentoring a child if they could meet the person close to home or work; get expert help when they needed it, as well as some training; have a variety of interests and scheduling possibilities; and have an employer who encourages mentoring and allows time away from work for mentoring activities.

MENTOR was founded in 1990 by Raymond G. Chambers and Geoffrey T. Boisi who found in conversation with children that they felt no one cared about them and they were cut off from our economic system. Chambers and Boisi vowed to make a difference by connecting caring adults with children in need of mentors. On their Web site at www.mentoring.org, a mentor can search for mentoring opportunities in their geographic area.

“PICNIC IN THE PINES” AT BENET HILL MONASTERY
A
day of fun for the whole family is planned for Saturday July 17 at the new Benet Hill Monastery and Ministry Center. From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., the Monastery will throw open its doors to welcome the community and celebrate summer at the first annual “Picnic in the Pines” event at the Benet Pines Retreat Center located in the Black Forest area at 3190 Benet Lane in northeast Colorado Springs. According to Sr. Rose Ann Barmann, the Monastery’s Development Director, “this family centered event will offer loads of fun, fellowship and entertainment for kids and adults of all ages!” “With all-you-can eat BBQ, beer, wine and beverages, ‘Picnic in the Pines’ promises to be a great day in a magnificent woodland setting,” said Barmann. Entertainment ranges from music by the New Horizons Combo Band, carriage rides, games for all ages including face painting and treasure hunts, an antique car show, a pig roast, bounce house, “Wacky Trikes” and nature walks. There will be plenty of free parking and a free shuttle bus. In addition, tickets for a drawing may be purchased for just $10 apiece, whether or not you plan to attend the event. Drawing items include a one-week stay in a gorgeous new condo in Costa Rica; a gourmet dinner at Benet Hill with Bishop Hanifen, Rabbi Hirsch and Reverend Trigg; several beautiful quilts and handmade stained glass; certificates for photo sessions, golf and accommodations and meals at several area hotels. Drawing items can be viewed at www.benethillmonastery.org.
IRRITATION
Event Chairperson Joan Klein stated that “Picnic in the Pines” will also showcase Benet Hill’s new facilities. Said Klein, “Funds raised through this event and the drawing will provide much-needed support for the important programs and services offered to the community by the ministries of Benet Hill.”
I
t is quite common for most individuals to experience mild irritation at one point or another. One can become irritated with a person or an event. Most people work through that irritation and move on. In some cases, a person may not move on. That person may experience ongoing frustration at a spouse, child, parent, sibling, friend, or co-worker.
The Benedictine sisterhood has been an important part of religious life in Colorado when the Sisters brought their education ministry to the state nearly 100 years ago. In 1963, the Sisters founded Benet Hill Academy on Chelton Road, which provided an education based on academic excellence and Catholic moral values for over 2,000 girls in its nearly 20-year tenure. Benet Hill is rooted in over 1500 years of the Benedictine Tradition that was born in the hearts of St. Benedict and St. Scholastica, “to seek God in community.”
Why do people choose to hold onto frustration? One reason is that the person does not see herself or himself as having a choice. He or she blames the person and expects the person to change. Showing or suppressing irritation and blaming someone for it will not change an individual. The only way one can let go of constant irritation is to take responsibility for having it and then letting go of expectations of that other person or people.
“Because Retreat Ministry has been an integral part of “Benet Pines’ for many years, it best exemplifies the key elements of our mission: hospitality, community and openness to all cultures and faiths,” said Sr. Anne Stedman, OSB, Prioress. The new location opened in October 2009.
For example, one may have constant irritation at one’s spouse or partner. The one who has the irritation may become triggered at the spouse or partner for the smallest reasons. Perhaps that person was eating too loudly, snoring, breathing too hard, left dirty dishes, went shopping again, whined, or some other behavior. The spouse or partner already carries an irritation so then he or she becomes triggered which may create an argument, a blow-up, or more suppression on the spouse or partner’s part. Whether an argument, blow-up, or suppression occurs, it most likely will not resolve the issue; exasperate it, yes, but not resolve it.
The community is welcome and invited to attend this wonderful event. Tickets may be purchased online at www.benethillmonastery.org or by calling 719-574-2037. Ticket prices range from $25 for individuals to $100 for an entire family residing in the same household. Children under the age of five will be admitted for free. Along with chairperson Joan Klein and Sr. Rose Ann Barmann, the “Picnic in the Pines” committee includes volunteers Julie Armstrong, Leslie Bent, Theresa Brown, Mary Beth Cipoletti, Chris Cipoletti, Janet Conover, Shay Dickerson, Lauren Giusti, Marty Kiernan, Sue Kiernan, Bliss Krucas, Cathy Marta, Mary Parsons, Jim Rocklin, Maryann Stadjuhar, Katie Stuart, Michel Tomsic and Gene Tourville.
6
The constant irritation can bring difficulty to the body. The irritation can add heat to the body to where the person feels uncomfortable. It can also create skin issues, headaches, and lead to other habits such as nail biting. The person experiencing the irritation may or may not be short tempered. It depends on how the person uses the irritation. If the person is suppressing the irritation, the energy of it backs up into the body. Over a period of time, it will start affecting the liver. The amount of time it takes to affect the liver depends on the genetic structure of the body and the tendencies of the person who is irritated. A Tai Yi treatment that works with this is Dust of Liver. Dust of Liver refers to dust on the liver. The dust refers to irritation. The dust heats up the liver, which can then create issues with it and the gallbladder. The person may or may not experience gallstones as a result. Again, it depends on the body and how long the person has been irritated. There are some Chinese herbs that a person can take to assist in cleansing out the gallbladder as well as receiving Tai Yi. This treatment will assist the person with what he or she is irritated about. The person will already know WHAT is irritating, but may have resistance to letting it go. This treatment will assist with letting it go. Dust of Liver works very well with Heated Head of Disruption, though, not required.

THE PALMER LAKE HISTORICAL SOCIETY PRESENTS “A HISTORY OF THE SHAMROCK RANCH AND LOCAL HOMESTEADERS” Join the Palmer Lake Historical Society for an informative journey back in time as David Wismer presents the results of his research into the history of the Shamrock Ranch and the homesteaders who settled in the area from the 1870’s. The beginnings of what is now Shamrock Ranch were traced to New Jersey lumberman Calvin Husted, who came to Colorado as part of the Pikes Peak gold rush. Husted instead began homesteading what is now the ranch headquarters in 1865. Much of the rest of the current ranch was acquired in 1870 by the Colorado Pinery Trust, headed by General William Palmer. By the mid-1880s, Husted acquired additional land to assemble the 771-acre Evergreen Ranch. Husted raised cattle and horses on his ranch, and operated a nearby
sawmill before forming a partnership and expanding the land holdings to more than 2,500 acres. Husted built a lumberyard and mansion in what is now Old Colorado City, became a county commissioner and amassed a fortune for the times estimated at $65,000 to $75,000. He later lost much of his fortune and was forced to sell the ranch in 1904. The land has changed hands several times since then. While owned by James McCullough, a man proud of his Irish heritage, the ranch was renamed the Shamrock Ranch - the name it bears today.

• On July 15, 1606, the great Dutch master Rembrandt van Rijn is born in Leiden. Rembrandt completed more than 600 paintings, many of them portraits or self-portraits. By the age of 22, he was accomplished enough to take on his own students. • On July 12, 1862, President Abraham Lincoln signs into law a measure calling for the awarding of a U.S. Army Medal of Honor. The first U.S. Army soldiers to receive the honor were six members of a Union raiding party who had penetrated deep into Tennessee and Georgia to destroy bridges and railroad tracks. • On July 14, 1881, Sheriff Pat Garrett kills Henry McCarty, known as Billy the Kid. Garrett had been tracking the Kid for three months after the gunslinger had escaped from prison only days before his scheduled execution. At the trial, the judge had sentenced Billy the Kid to hang until “you are dead, dead, dead.” Billy reportedly responded, “And you can go to hell, hell, hell.” • On July 17, 1938, glory-seeking flier
Douglas Corrigan takes off from New York headed for California. Twenty-eight hours later, Corrigan landed his plane in Dublin, Ireland and exclaimed, “Just got in from New York. Where am I?” By the time “Wrong Way” Corrigan and his crated plane returned to New York by ship, he was a national celebrity. • On July 18, 1940, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, who first took office in 1933 as America’s 32nd president, is nominated for an unprecedented third term. Roosevelt would eventually be elected to a record four terms, the only U.S. president to serve more than two terms. • On July 16, 1967, actor and comedian Will Ferrell is born in Irvine, Calif. After rising to fame on TV’s “Saturday Night Live,” Ferrell starred in a string of bigscreen comedies, including “Anchorman,” “Old School” and “Talladega Nights.” • On July 13, 1990, the romantic-thriller “Ghost,” starring Demi Moore, Patrick Swayze and Whoopi Goldberg, opens in theaters across the United States. The film, about a woman who communicates with her murdered husband through a psychic, received multiple Academy Award nominations. (c) 2010 King Features Synd., Inc.

INDOOR AIR POLUTION and How You Can Fight Back! There are many sources of indoor air pollution. Some sources, such as building materials, furnishings, and household products (like air fresheners), release pollutants more or less continuously into your home. Other sources are from activities we choose to do in our homes, such as smoking, the use of solvents in cleaning and hobby activities, the use of paint strippers in redecorating activities, and the use of cleaning products and pesticides in housekeeping. The use of unvented or malfunctioning stoves, furnaces, or space heaters are a constant polutant also. High pollutant concentrations can remain in the air for long periods after some of these activities. Other polutants come from combustion sources such as oil, gas, kerosene, coal, wood, and tobacco products. And still more from deteriorated, asbestos-containing insulation, wet or damp carpet, and cabinetry or furniture made of certain pressed wood products; products for household cleaning and maintenance, personal care, or hobbies; central heating and cooling systems and humidification devices; and outdoor sources such as radon and pesticides. If too little outdoor air enters a home, pollutants can

Unfortunately many of the new homes are designed and constructed to minimize the amount of outdoor air that can "leak" into and out of the home, therefore may have higher pollutant levels than other homes.

BUT, here’s the Good News: Opening windows and doors, operating window or attic fans, or running a window air conditioner with the vent control open increases the outdoor ventilation rate.
Local bathroom or kitchen fans that exhaust outdoors remove contaminants directly from the room where the fan is located and also increase the outdoor air ventilation rate.

It is particularly important to ventilate your home while you are involved in shortterm activities that generate high levels of pollutants.
For example, painting, paint stripping, heating with kerosene heaters, cooking, or engaging in maintenance and hobby activities such as welding, soldering, or sanding.
You might also choose to do some of these activities outdoors, if you can and if weather permits.

$25 OFF THE POWER OF FORGIVENESS By Cathy R. Deschaine M.A.LC
I
t is an assumption that we will love ourselves in these words from an ancient scroll, ”love others as you love yourself.” In order to foster healthy self-love, we may need to forgive ourselves, just as healthy love for others requires us letting go of old resentments, old angers and unforgiving wounds. Forgiveness is can be difficult, especially if revenge seems more in order…I want to love my neighbor, but his son just wrecked my car backing out of his driveway. The last thing I’m thinking about is forgiveness; I want to call the cops on the careless twit. Yet it grows out of love, and can change the course of a life. In a time when many leaders have a hard time saying they’re sorry or even offer forgiveness, this following story shows the power and wisdom of forgiveness. During the Civil War, a young man named Roswell McIntyre was drafted into the NYC Cavalry. The war was not going well. Roswell panicked and became frightened and ran. He was later court-martialed and condemned to be executed for desertion. McIntyre’s mother appealed to President Lincoln. Pleaded that her son was inexperienced and asked for a second chance. Lincoln

thought and prayed. Then he wrote a famous statement.” I have observed,” he said, “that it never does a boy much good to shoot him.” In his own handwriting he then penned a letter to certify that Roswell McIntyre be readmitted to the cavalry. “When he serves out his required enlistment he shall be freed of all charges of desertion.” This letter is on display at the Library of Congress. Beside it lays a note that says it was taken from the body of Roswell McIntyre who died on the battle of Little Five Forks, Virginia. Given another chance, McIntyre fought until the end. Refusing to forgive can act as an unhealthy approach to forgiveness. Those who refuse grow bitter because they stew in their own woundedness. They are easily offended and hold onto grudges. They drink the poison, hoping the offender will die! Through this reactive, rigid style they cut themselves off from every other emotion other than resentment and anger. As you consider forgiveness--for yourselves, for someone else, consider how Lincoln’s generous and wise offer changed the course of a life!

FINGER-LICKIN’ CHICKEN The brining and chicken prep steps shouldn’t be skipped for the most flavorful chicken and the best results. These steps can be done a day in advance or before leaving for the day, if you want fried chicken for dinner. 2 tablespoons table salt 2 tablespoons poultry seasoning 2 tablespoons hot sauce 3 bay leaves 1 quart low-fat buttermilk 1 whole chicken (about 3 1/2 pounds, giblets discarded, washed and cut into pieces -- breast pieces in half) 3 cups all-purpose flour 1 tablespoon poultry seasoning 1 teaspoon baking powder 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon black pepper 1 teaspoon paprika 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper Refined peanut oil or vegetable shortening (about 12 cups) To Make the Brining Mixture: In a large zipper-lock plastic bag, combine salt, poultry seasoning, hot sauce and bay leaves. Shake the bag to mix the spices thoroughly. Add 3 3/4 cups of the buttermilk into the bag, reserving 1/4 cup. Stir or shake with the bag sealed until the salt is completely dissolved. Immerse the chicken in the mixture. Place the bag of chicken pieces in a large baking pan to prevent leaks. Refrigerate 1 hour or up to 8 hours to allow the pieces to become fully seasoned. To Prepare the Chicken: Remove the chicken from the buttermilk brine and shake off excess. Place the pieces in single layer on large wire rack set over a
Coating and Frying the Chicken: 1. Mix together the flour, poultry seasoning, baking powder, salt, black pepper, paprika and cayenne pepper in a large, shallow dish. Stir in the remaining 1/4 cup buttermilk. Combine the ingredients with your fingertips. The buttermilk will make the flour mixture thick and slightly lumpy. Working in batches of 3, drop the chicken pieces in the flour. Press both sides of the chicken pieces into the flour and lumpy pieces to coat. Gently shake excess flour from each piece. 2. Adjust oven rack to middle position, set second wire rack over second rimmed baking sheet, and place on oven rack. Heat the oven to 200 F to keep chicken warm while frying in batches. Line a large plate with double layer of paper towels to drain the fried chicken pieces on after removing them from the oil. 3. Pour 3/4-inches of oil in a large, 8-quart, cast-iron Dutch oven with a diameter of about 12 inches or into a deep-fat fryer. Heat the oil to 375 F over medium-high heat. Place a few of the dark meat chicken pieces, skin-side down, in the oil. Do not crowd the chicken. Cover with a heavy lid. Reduce the heat to medium, and fry. 4. After about 3 minutes, lift the chicken pieces with tongs to check for even browning; rearrange if some pieces are browning faster than others. Check the oil temperature with a thermometer after the first 6 minutes of frying. The oil should be about 325¡F., adjust the temperature by turning the heat up or down as necessary. Continue cooking for another 4 to 6 minutes, until the chicken is golden brown. 5. Turn the chicken pieces over and continue to fry, with the pan uncovered, until chicken pieces are deep golden brown on the second side, 6 to 8 minutes longer. Using tongs, transfer the chicken to a paper towel-lined plate; let stand 2 minutes to drain, then transfer to rack in warm oven. 6. Replace paper-towel lining on plate. Return oil to 375 F and fry remaining pieces, transferring pieces to paper towel-lined plate to drain, then transferring to wire rack. Cool chicken pieces on wire rack (outside oven) about 5 minutes and serve. Serves 4 to 6. *** Angela Shelf Medearis is an award-winning children’s author, culinary historian and the author of six cookbooks. In order to keep everyone honest (you know who you are,) we have moved the answers and solutions to the trivia and puzzles to the next page (17).
New DVD Releases for Week of July 12, 2010 PICKS OF THE WEEK “Mystery Science Theater 3000: XVIII” (Unrated) -- Joel, Mike and the bots are trapped on the Satellite of Love and forced to watch the world’s worst movies -- and we get to watch ‘em watch. The four episodes chosen for this latest collection are classics, especially “The Lost Continent,” starring Whit Bissel, Cesar Romero and “Leave It to Beaver’s” Hugh Beaumont. A group of scientists go to an island
to recover a test rocket that’s flown off-course and encounter ridiculous-looking stop-motion dinosaurs and lizards shot using forced perspective. There is also rock climbing. Lots and lots of rock climbing. So much so, that “rock climbing” became a running a gag in future episodes of the show. The second feature is “Crash of the Moons” a film stitched together from episodes of the old “Rocky Jones, Space Ranger” television series. Rocky, Winky and his intrepid space crew try to stop an evil Space Dictator (Patsy Parsons) from destroying a moon ruled by the guy who played Sgt. Schultz on “Hogan’s Heroes.” “The Beast of Yucca Flats” stars the legendary Tor Johnson as a Russian scientist who is turned into a monster following an atomic blast. And the final feature, “Jack Frost” is a weird, Russian/Finnish fairy tale made in the ‘60s about two children’s magical adventures, that looks more acid trip than Brothers Grimm. “World War I in Color” (Unrated) -- Shakespearian actor/director Kenneth Branagh narrates this brilliant six-part documentary that
does for The Great War what Ken Burns did for The Civil War. Using meticulously colorized archival footage and interviews and personal accounts of soldiers who fought in the war, the horrors, gallantry, the overwhelming scale and emotion of the 20th century’s first global conflict are brought to life. Not only are the major battles addressed, but also the advances in technology and weaponry of the war -- most of which are still in use today -- are highlighted, as are the lifestyles of the people who lived during the turn of the century. This series is a must-have for general history buffs and military history aficionados alike.
DOG OF THE WEEK “Chloe” (R) -- “Chloe” is supposed to be a steamy, erotic thriller, but its slow pace and ridiculous “Fatal Attraction” third act destroy whatever prurient interest you might have had in this picture. The film stars Julianne Moore, a doctor who isn’t taking her descent into middle age gracefully. She suspects her husband (Liam Neeson)
16
is cheating on her. So, she hires Chloe (Amanda Seyfried) -- a hooker with huge, dewy, doe eyes and a body like a sex burrito slathered in queso just daring you to take a bite -- to seduce her husband to see if he is the cheating type. One thing leads to another, and Moore becomes involved with Chloe and things begin to spin out of control, leading to the aforementioned ridiculous third act. Still, ya get to see that “Mama Mia” chick naked, so it’s definitely worth a rental.

f you’re a member of Generation X — the age group born between 1963 and 1981 — you may well be in the busiest time of your life. You’re probably in the early to middle stages of your career, for one thing, and if you have children, they’re likely still at home. Yet despite the hectic nature of your days, you still have to look after the financial concerns of your children, yourself and possibly even your parents. This three-generational effort may seem challenging, but with some planning and persistence, you can help your family make progress toward a variety of goals. To begin with, let’s consider the needs of your children. Obviously, you’re already providing for their living expenses, so from an investment point of view, your biggest concern may be how you’ll help them pay for college. Here’s a suggestion: Put time on your side and start saving as soon as possible. You might want to consider opening a 529 college savings plan, which offers potential tax advantages. Saving for college is important — but so is saving for your own retirement. Consequently, you’ll have to find the right balance of resources to devote to these two goals. To avoid shortchanging yourself, take full advantage of your 401(k) or similar employer-sponsored retirement plan. Contribute as much as you can afford right now, and whenever you get a raise, increase your contributions. At the very least, put
You aren’t confined to investing in a 401(k), either, because you can also put money into a traditional IRA, which accumulates tax deferred, or a Roth IRA, which accumulates tax free, provided you’re at least age 59½ when you start making withdrawals and you’ve held your account at least five years. Once you’ve started saving for college for your kids and investing for your own retirement, you’ve got one more generation to consider — the older one. For example, you’ll need to make sure your parents have adequate financial protection for their health care expenses. If your parents have saved and invested throughout their lives, they may not need any financial help from you — but that doesn’t mean you’ll never be called upon to straighten out their affairs. That’s why now is the perfect time to ask your parents some key questions: Where are your assets located? Do you have a will? How about a durable power of attorney? You might think these inquiries will make you sound “selfish,â€? but the opposite is true: The more you know about your parents’ financial situation and estate plans, the bigger help you’ll be to them, and to other members of your family, if the day arrives when your parents need some assistance. It may not always be easy to act on behalf of three generations — but it’s worth the effort. This article was written by Edward Jones for use by your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor.

ummer is a good time to do a mid-year financial checkup. Rather than waiting until the end of the year and discovering that you should have made adjustments, take a look at your finances now and see how you’re doing. Taxes: • Did you have to pay taxes on top of what was deducted from your pay in 2009? Or was too much deducted and you received a refund? The key is to do the math and get as close to your actual taxes due and have that amount taken out during the year. • If you’ve added a baby to your household or if you’ve bought a house and will have a mortgage interest deduction, you can benefit from adding a deduction or two to your W-4 form for your employer.

• If you received a big refund for 2009, that’s money you could have used during the year for any number of things, such as extra money to pay down credit cards or putting more cash into savings. Remember: The Internal Revenue Service doesn’t pay you interest on the money it borrows from you during the year.
More Tips:
• If you have multiple jobs or got married, your taxes will change. If you lost your job and received accumulated vacation or sick pay, that money is taxable. If you then received unemployment benefits, that money also is taxable. While the last thing you want to do the minute you find a new job is increase the amount of money deducted from your new check, it could keep you from owing taxes next spring. • Add up your expenses for the year so far. Look at your annual budget and compare all the categories to see if you’re on track for savings, credit-card payments, clothing, food and utilities. • If you’d planned to pay down loans faster by sending larger payments for mortgage and auto loans, have you done that? Even starting now would help in the long run. David Uffington regrets that he cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into his column whenever possible.
