hen we think of summer, we often think of hot summer afternoons by the pool, campouts and tending the garden. Then there are the foods of the season. We flock to the farmer’s markets and produce departments of the grocery store for the best the year offers. Summer means grilling, lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, thirst quenching drinks and watermelon juices dripping down your arms. And there’s so much more.
THE ICE POP No sooner does winter make its exit and we start thinking of cold and refreshing food and drink. Take popsicles for instance. One of the first known popsicles was invented in

1905 by an 11-year-old boy, Frank Epperson, who mistakenly left a water and powdered soda mixture on his porch overnight with a stir stick placed inside. It froze during that cold night in San Francisco, hence a fruit flavored icicle. Once Epperson grew up and caught the entrepreneurial fever, he dubbed his invention the “Epsicle Ice Pop,” changed the name to popsicle at the urging of his children and introduced it at an amusement park in Alameda, Calif. He sold his rights in 1925 to the Joe Lowe Co. out of New York. The Joe Lowe Co. eventually sold the rights to Good Humor in 1989.

Not only are popsicles refreshing to eat on a hot summer day, but building structures of all shapes and sizes with the leftover sticks can provide hours of entertainment for the kids. A bonus for the environment. The popsicle stick also has a riddle stamped on it for additional entertainment value.
GET RID OF THE SNOW AND BRING IN THE SNOW CONE The snow cone, crushed ice topped with sweetened and flavored water, made its debut in the United States in 1919 when Samuel Bert introduced them during the State Fair in Texas. He invented the first ice-crushing machine in 1920 and continued to sell them until he died in 1984. A New Orleans resident, Ernest Hansen, invented an ice shaving machine in 1934 which gave the snow cone a more snowlike consistency versus Bert’s crunchy ice. This style of machine is still popular today and the Hansen family continues to work in the snow cone industry. Shaved ice treats have been popular since the 19th century in Asia. When the Japanese migrated to Hawaii for work, they brought along their steel blades for ice shaving with
them. This became known as Hawaiian shaved ice with a consistency so fine that it is almost powder-like and very similar to that of real snow. Even before, Emperor Nero would send slaves to collect snow from the mountains in the mid 1500’s to then flavor with fruit juice and honey. The Greeks also made snow cones as early as the fifth century with ice, fruit and honey.
ICY COLD BEER There are many non beer drinkers who will admit to finding themselves craving a cold brew on a hot summer day. Think ballpark and thank the ancient Sumerians. Near the ancient cities of Babylon and Ur, the Sumerians accidentally discovered the fermenting process once the hunters and gatherers started farming grain. According to pictograms, it appears that baked bread was mixed into water, eventually fermenting and making a drink that would make people feel “exhilarated, wonderful and blissful.” Thus, the Sumerians are thought to be the first civilized culture to brew beer and even named a goddess of brewing “Ninkasi.” Today, beer can be found everywhere in multiple varieties. There are estimated to be about 1,500 breweries in the United States alone. That’s a lot of foam. Snippetz thinks there’s so much to say about beer that you beer fans deserve even more. Stay tuned for a future beer exposé.

Watermelon is also great for cardiovascular functioning as it releases the amino acids citrulline and arginine, both great for a healthy heart. And if you don’t like those pesky black seeds, these days it’s quite common to find the seedless variety. The seedless watermelon was invented about 50 years ago by crossing male watermelon pollen containing 22 chromosomes (per cell) with female watermelon pollen that has 44 chromosomes to produce a melon with only the small white seed “coats” that are easily swallowed and won’t grow a watermelon in the stomach of small children.
A PEACH OF AN IDEA In Colorado, we can’t think of summer without our Palisades peaches. Where did it all begin? Luther Burbank from Lancaster, Mass. invented eight varieties of peaches including the Freestone peach during the late 19th century. He spent 55 years devoting his life to horticulture and may be most known for his development of the Burbank potato, which was used to fight the potato blight epidemic in Ireland. In order to get to Santa Rosa, California to open his experimental farm, Burbank sold the rights to the potato for $150. With his new farm, Burbank can be credited for 113 varieties of plums and prunes; 10 varieties each of cherries, strawberries, and apples; four varieties of both grapes and pears; 13 raspberries and 16 blackberries; as well as several varieties of cacti, chestnuts, nectarines, grapes, almonds, figs, walnuts as well as the peaches. He was awarded patents for his work post-

IT’S A LEMON Lemons are synonymous with summer and lemonade is considered a staple in many households to help beat the heat. That mixture of lemon, water and sugar is not as simple as one might think. There are several variations depending on what country you’re in.
Our Prayers Are With Him!
LIBERTY HEIGHTS IS BACK!
• In France, “fizzy lemonade” is any sweet carbonated beverage, referred to as “limonade.” Germany, Australia, New Zealand and the U.K. also refer to their carbonated citrus drinks as limonade.

LIBERTY HTS. Wednesday 8AM - 1PM
• There is also “cloudy lemonade” found mostly in Canada, the U.K. and India that is a mixture of lemon juice, sugar and uncarbonated water.
The American version of pink lemonade was originally made with sumac berries and maple syrup for sweetener. Now it’s mainly pink food coloring and sugar. There are a couple of other theories about the start of pink lemonade. One was that Henry E. Sanchez Allot invented it when at the age of 15 he ran away with the circus and became enchanted with the lemonade

The Summertime Munchies... Continued from Page 3 sold there. He accidentally dropped some red cinnamon candies into the lemonade mixture one day and it became a popular pink seller. The other theory involved a man by the name of Pete Coklin who invented pink lemonade in 1857 by using water dyed pink from a horse rider’s red tights to make it. Very appetizing. The lemon itself was first grown in northern India and found to have great value in enhancing foods. Lemons were such a sought after commodity that they were called “golden apples” and traded for valuable goods.
TURN UP THE HEAT (AND OIL) Does summertime make you think of the Colorado State Fair and all its food offerings – turkey legs, fresh squeezed lemonade, funnel cakes, nachos, deep fried Snickers bars, pizza, porch chops on a stick, blooming onions and roasted corn? Here are some extreme fair food items to harden your arteries with: • In Minnesota, fairgoer favorites include deep fried spaghetti and meatballs … on a stick, of course. These little delights are smashed up meatballs and cooked spaghetti formed into balls, dipped in a garlic batter before being deep fried and served with marinara sauce. • Iowa calls their hot beef sundae “comfort food at its finest.” It’s a mound of very buttery mashed potatoes covered with slow roasted beef and gravy, sprinkled with cheddar cheese and topped with a cherry tomato.

• Who would believe this one? When healthy Californians rebel, they feast on the Krispy Kreme Chicken Sandwich. This is a fried (of course) chicken patty topped with a slice of Swiss cheese and served inside of a sliced Krispy Kreme glazed doughnut. And to make it a little sweeter, folks dip these in a side of honey sauce.

There’s a reason s’mores are synonymous with the Girl Scouts. The first recorded recipe for those graham cracker, chocolate and marshmallow delights were found in the Girl Scout’s manual, “Tramping and Trailing with the Girl Scouts,” published in 1927.
ginaforeropianostudio@yahoo.com
It’s said that the name is a shortened version of “some more” because either with a sticky mouth it was hard to say it in two full words or there were the constant requests for more of the sweet treat, so it was easier to shorten the name. S’mores aren’t just for campfires anymore. Anyone with a microwave can be a happy camper by assembling the chocolate bar and marshmallow sandwiched between two graham crackers and popping it into the microwave for a few seconds.

e are well into 2010, and it is time to review the trends that have solidly established themselves, It’s no surprise that we are staying in our homes longer now, appreciating what we have, and upgrading where we can. Those upgrades are strongly focused on kitchens and baths.

KITCHENS: • Glass tiles with translucent qualities are a huge design trend for kitchens and baths, as accents for walls and counters. Combining glass accents with heavier materials (metals, porcelain tile, natural stone) allows for contrasts in design that become a visual and tactile treat.
www.secretwindowgallery.com
• Granite countertops still command the lead for upgraded counter materials. Sealing the granite at least once a year enhances its stain resistance and improves the function of this “designed by nature” countertop.

• Square footage is being stolen from adjacent areas of the home to increase the size of the Master Bath. The addition of a comfortable chaise or a plush ottoman in the room allows for a place to sit, reflect and relax. Adding one luxurious piece of furniture to the bath space can transform the room into a spa-like retreat. • While over-the-top luxury is not a design trend given the current questionable economy, adding a small crystal chandelier to the bathroom is definitely a way to make a classic statement without being ostentatious.
• Good design dictates that “form follow function”. And consumers have found a way to rev up the functionality of their kitchen & bath designs by adding heated coil underlayments to stone and tile floors. Those beautiful hard surface floors are ice cold underfoot, and this new trend makes them much more comfortable. • Color is the magic element that ranks high on the trend list. Natural colors are the most versatile, but we are seeing the incorporation of bolder, gem-like colors into kitchen and bath designs as well. Reds, cobalt blues, emerald greens and deep topaz are on the “HOT” list.
• Bathroom designs are seeing glass tile paired with colorful translucent sinks, but picture floors that incorporate stone, wood and glass for a breathtaking juxtaposition of delicate elements to nature’s heavier materials. Once again, doing something unexpected will make any design memorable.
• Tin ceilings are adding vintage character to kitchens across the country. It might be the real thing in tin or copper, or it might be an embossed white-on-white wall covering that can be painted a metallic color. The latter option is a great money saver and looks like the real thing. These embossed wall coverings are lightweight and highly dimensional. They lend themselves to be painted in any color you choose--or for a pristine, traditional look, just leave them white. They are easy to install and the varied patterns hide seams beautifully. Embossed wall coverings are often in stock at your local paint and wallpaper store.
• One last trend of note is the use of specialty lighting to transform the environment, especially in the bathroom. Use indirect, ambient lighting for tub areas, and brighter, directed lighting for mirrors and vanities. Dimmer switches control mood and function.
• Sinks are now becoming the artistic focal point of the bathroom. Hand-painted, trans-

lucent sinks in every color imaginable are hot commodities, and not as costly as you might think. Consider this option as “jewelry” for your bathroom. Add to that complementary glass tiles to your floor design (not a misspelling—color “complements” are opposite colors on the color wheel), and you have a bath that sparkles with elegance.
•Stainless steel has already made a great name for itself in kitchens. Bulletin: Stainless is making its way into bathrooms as well! Stainless bathroom sinks (and even tubs) are available now for a clean, contemporary look. Also stainless decorative wall panels for shower surrounds are an option. Brushed or hammered decorative finishes keep the material from appearing too stark and minimizes water spots as well.
• If you have a roomy kitchen, stone hearths are becoming very popular (a bit of Americana borrowed from Colonial times). Oversized, dramatic hearths in natural stone add warmth and character to any kitchen.

2010 DESIGN TRENDS
If you are getting the message that design is all about COMFORT as these new trends unfold—you are right! Americans are focused on creating a cozy, safe haven for themselves and their families in this very unstable world. And the “hot” recipe for good design right now calls for comfort to be the main ingredient. To find out more, go to: www.FlooringandDesignCenter.com

A person can see sabotage and/or resistance, but struggle to stop it or struggle to understand it. Resistance comes from a fear of healing on some level. The origin of fear is different for different people, but many times it is connected to fear of moving out of a comfort zone. Even when one is in pain, the outcome is familiar. That familiarity creates a comfort zone. Leaving pain can seem scary on one level of a person’s mind because it creates an unknown. A person, who is working on healing emotional pain, will often times state that he or she wants the pain to go away. If that statement were entirely true, why would the person sabotage him or herself by making an old choice that creates more pain? The answer is usually that there is fear of healing/fear of the outcome for a variety of reasons. This creates resistance. The person may see resistance, but not understand how to overcome it.

Wind: This part of the treatment helps bring balance and raises conscious awareness to future events that the person is creating. This also includes what the person is creating in his or her physical body. Most people resist change and this brings awareness to mind and body. Wind invasion creates short-temperament and fluctuates blood pressure. This part of the treatment will assist with that as well.

ing. This also brings awareness of selfsabotage. This part is good for someone who receives a compliment and then the person ‘slaps’ him or herself. Rivers: This part works with the meridians in the body to allow the energy to flow more freely.
Waves: This represents fluid in the body that can lead to emotional mood swings, which is also linked to Bipolar Disorder. This is also very beneficial for those who resist change and allows for the person to adjust to changes more easily. any individuals are working on their healing, either on their own, with a counselor, spiritual teacher, or religious teacher. During the time of working with someone, the individual may talk through choices, look at patterns, and understand the pain in order to change it. The person may also need additional assistance with looking at resistance, sabotage, and need a little push to move towards a more positive feeling in the mind and body.
A Tai Yi treatment that can benefit this person is called Internal Weather. It is in four parts: Wind, Waves, Rivers, and Mountains.

The Skin Classic probe attracts moisture in the skin tissue, which then electro-desiccates and electro-coagulates the irregularity. Typically only one treatment is needed and healing time is short—from a day or two to a few weeks for larger skin abnormalities. Although tolerance varies among individuals, most people experience minor discomfort during the procedure similar to a pinch or a zing. After treatment, skin must be kept clean and moisturized using sunblock. Makeup as cover up is fine!
Saturday, August 7th is that day; a day filled with family festivities and life altering events; a day with automotive viewings, Bowling affairs, and musical collaboration. What’s that you say - explain in detail these events throughout the day, as if I were advertising for it? Well, if you insist:

It’s because dromedaries have an even number of toes (two) on each foot, while we have an odd number. • According to a poll conducted in the United Kingdom, 80 percent of male college freshmen and sophomores in that country have never done a load of laundry in their lives. • At weddings here in the United States, it is common for the bride to toss her bouquet to determine who will be the next to be married. At weddings in Finland the custom is a bit different, though the outcome is the same: There, the bride traditionally wears a golden crown, and at the reception she is blindfolded and spun around. Then all the single girls in attendance dance around her while the bride, still blindfolded, tries to place the crown on one of them. It’s believed that the lucky girl who ends up wearing the crown will be the next to wed.

or three days, August 6-8, 2010, the Palmer Lake Historical Society and volunteers from the Tri-Lakes community will remember the Chautauqua Assemblies of long ago by recreating the types of events and activities that might have been experienced by early Chautauqua-goers. This historical journey takes place at some of the sites of early Chautauqua events in Palmer Lake. There will be many free activities and events related to the history of the Palmer Divide and the hardy folks that lived and worked here. As you will see, learning about historical events can be educational and entertaining for people of all ages. There will be something of interest for the entire family, from history tramps, nature walks, portrayals of historic figures, and demonstrations of skills required for everyday living in the late 1800’s, to a Civil War encampment and a vintage baseball game. The closing ceremonies for this three day event will feature the Fort Carson Mounted Honor Guard.
Rocky Mountain Chautauqua Assembly Begun in 1874 in southwestern New York, the Chautauqua adult education movement spread across the country. People flocked to these entertaining and educational sessions, popular in the days before radio, movies and television. Summer gatherings in woodsy places attracted hundreds of folks for educational lectures, cultural entertainment, spiritual enlightenment and outdoor recreation. People were eager to learn from nature walks, lectures, religious lectures and field trips.

Chautauqua activities in Palmer Lake included lectures, debates, concerts, campfire gatherings and burro excursions up to the reservoirs. The Chautauqua lectures included Professor Cutler from Denver University on the geological history of Elephant Rock and Dr. W. H. Riley of the Colorado Sanitarium on “Food - Its Relation to Health.” Chautauqua-goers hiked to the apex of Chautauqua Crest that towers above the 150-acre grounds, where a gazebo had been built. The idea caught on elsewhere in Colorado. In Boulder, for example, schoolteachers from Texas started the Chautauqua Assembly that still functions in original meeting halls and cottages. Nationally known musicians continue to perform in the historic Chautauqua Theater throughout the summer while lectures and forums engage the public. Chautauqua gatherings faded from popularity, at Palmer Lake and elsewhere, in the 1910s as Americans sought other entertainment outlets and began enjoying summer auto vacations, rather than the Chautauqua Assemblies.

The original Chautauqua Assembly came to Palmer Lake in 1887 and was an annual summer event for more than two decades. Palmer Lake hosted one of the first Chautauqua Assemblies in the Rocky Mountain West. The Rocky Mountain Chautauqua Assembly made Palmer Lake a destination point for many. People from Colorado Springs and Denver, as well as elsewhere in Colorado and Midwestern states, arrived on the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad. Palmer Lake’s Chautauqua took place in Glen Park centered around an auditorium built on what we now know as Chautauqua Avenue. Many homes in “The Glen” neighborhood began as rustic tent cottages, where Chautauqua-goers stayed for the six-week long assembly. Many Chautauqua cottages eventually evolved into permanent homes where some descendants still live today.

MANY WOMEN CAN REGAIN BLADDER CONTROL DON’T LET BLADDER RULE YOUR LIFE DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I, like the letterwriter P.G., had to run to the bathroom constantly in order not to have an accident. I wanted to see my grandson graduate from college, so I consulted a urologist. He sent me to a place where treatments with an electrical probe were given. I went for six weeks and also did Kegel exercises. The quality of my life changed for the better, and now I square dance and do aerobics. Incontinence is no longer a problem. -E.M. ANSWER: Electrical stimulation of the pelvic muscles has successfully allowed many women to regain bladder control. It doesn’t work for all, however. The stimulation strengthens muscles that keep the bladder closed, and controls overactive bladder wall muscles that contract forcefully and frequently.

Another technique is a device that delivers electric current to spinal nerves in the lower back. If those nerves respond to the current and keep the bladder closed, then a small unit is implanted under the skin for a permanent solution to this problem. One such device is called the InterStim. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I have an EKG done every year. I also have worn a monitor that records heart activity for three days. Everything is fine. When I fall asleep most nights, I wake after about 10 minutes with a rapid heartbeat, and sometimes it takes quite a time before it settles down and I can get back to sleep. I rarely have such a rapid beat at any other time of the day. Do you know what causes this, or what it might be? I am 57. -- S.B.

DONOHUE: My wife, 76, has degenerative arthritis of the spine. Can you tell me if this condition will progress to total disability? -- J.D. ANSWER: Degenerative arthritis is another name for osteoarthritis, the most common kind of arthritis. Almost every 70-year-old has a touch of it. It can be in the back, knee, hip, hand, fingers and an-
ANSWER: If I had to make a guess, it would be paroxysmal atrial tachycardia, a sudden heart speedup for no reason. It’s usually not a serious condition, and it doesn’t indicate heart disease. If the rate is really fast or if the episode lasts for a prolonged period, then treatment would be needed. No one can be sure unless the rhythm comes on when a doctor is present or when you are hooked up to an EKG machine. That monitor you wore for three days can be left on for longer stretches of time. Or you could have someone take you to the emergency department of a hospital if you can reach it somewhat quickly. You can’t obtain a diagnosis without such information. The booklet on heartbeat disorders discusses their more common forms. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 107W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL

Here’s how it works: When you have a mortgage, the Deed of Trust paperwork is recorded with the local county recorder. When a mortgage is paid off, a reconveyance deed is filed (by the trustee or title company) with that same recorder’s office and the original is sent to you within 30 or 60 days. The paperwork says you’ve paid off your mortgage. Except for property taxes (and maybe condo fees) you don’t owe anybody anything on your home.

that you own your home. Knowing that, here come the scammers. A number of seniors have received in the mail official-looking documents saying that their reconveyance deed is not on file. For a “small fee, of course, they can fix the situation and ensure that a copy is filed. Nowadays it’s easy to get information online, and that’s likely where the scammers are getting it. No doubt they’re looking at the exact reconveyance deed online when they note your name and address and send you mail saying that deed is missing. If you receive official-looking mail saying that your reconveyance deed is not filed, do not send any money to have someone else take care of it for you. Hunt up your own original and call the

county recorder’s office. Ask someone there to verify that your deed is copied or noted in the files. I remember when people use to have deed-burning parties. The paid-off deed was incinerated in the barbecue grill in the backyard and a good time was had by all. It probably was never a good idea to do that.

RIDE THE “WAVE” WITH A QUICK FISH DISH I’ve found during my years of teaching adults how to cook that the thing they fear most (and ruin most often) is fish. My favorite fish recipe for novice cooks is Italian-Style Salmon cooked in the microwave. The microwave is the perfect way to cook seafood because it works by cooking food from the inside out and also creates steam, which keeps the fish moist. Salmon can be prepared in the microwave in just five minutes! If you’ve been afraid to venture out into the deep, start your voyage with salmon. It’s flavorful, versatile, easy to cook and a healthy source of protein. Salmon is low in mercury and high in omega-3 fatty acids. Eating two to three servings per week of foods rich in omega-3 is a healthy choice. While 80 percent of all of the salmon sold is farm-raised, wild salmon is the best option. A 4-ounce serving of wild salmon provides a full day’s requirement of vitamin D, and more than half of the necessary B-12, niacin and selenium.

It’s an excellent source of B-6 and magnesium, too. Omega-3 fats also have been found to help slow cognitive problems such as Alzheimer’s disease and age-related cognitive decline, and reduce incidences of depression and aggression. Canned salmon has almost the same health benefits as fresh, and it’s inexpensive. Canned salmon is typically wild Alaskan salmon that is processed and packaged immediately onsite. Canned salmon also contains large amounts of calcium (due to the bones of the fish, which are soft and easily digestible). Canned salmon is ready to eat and can be used in a variety of dishes from soups to stir-fry. Fresh salmon can be baked, broiled, grilled and pan-fried in 10 minutes or less. This recipe for Italian-Style Microwave Salmon is the perfect dish to conquer your “fear of fish.” Eat more salmon and ride the “wave” this summer by using your microwave to get in and out of the kitchen in record time!

You can vary the flavor of this recipe by changing the type of olive oil-based salad dressing you use. Try substituting an Asian, citrusflavored or honey-mustard-based oil dressing for the Italian dressing to create a flavorful new fish dish! 3 pounds salmon fillets with skin, thawed, washed and patted dry 1 tablespoon poultry seasoning 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon black pepper 1 cup Italian salad dressing 1/4 cup diced green or red bell peppers (or a combination of both) 1 tablespoon orange juice or lemon juice 1. Season both sides of the fillets with the poultry seasoning, salt and pepper. Place the fillets in a shallow microwave-safe baking dish. Fold and tuck the narrow ends of the filets under to make the pieces uniform in shape. This will help the fish to cook evenly. Place the thickest pieces near the edge of the dish.

2. Using a small bowl, mix together the Italian dressing, bell peppers and orange or lemon juice. Pour dressing mixture over the fillets. Cover with microwave-safe plastic wrap. Fold back a small (1-inch) section of the plastic wrap in the corner of the dish to allow steam to vent. 3. Place a small, microwave-safe saucer, upside down, on the turntable in the microwave. Place the dish containing the fillets on top of the saucer to elevate the dish and ensure that the fish cooks evenly. Microwave for 4 to 5 minutes on High. Fish should be moist and flake easily. Serve immediately. Serves 6.

New DVD Releases for Week of August 2, 2010 PICKS OF THE WEEK “Kick-Ass” (R) -- “Kick-Ass” is one of my favorite films of 2010 (after “Toy Story 3” and “Iron Man 2”). Based on the cult comic-book series, “Kick-Ass” is the story of a high-school nebbish named Dave (Aaron Johnson) who secretly decides to become a superhero named Kick-Ass. When someone with a phonecam videos Kick-Ass beating
down a bunch of goons, Kick-Ass becomes a YouTube sensation and Dave finds himself taking on more and more dangerous assignments. Eventually, Kick-Ass comes to the attention of a local mobster (Mark Strong) and the teen finds himself over his head. Luckily, there are other masked vigilantes in town ready to come to his aid: Big Daddy (played to the hilt by Nicholas Cage doing his best Adam West impression) and 10-year-old Hit Girl (Chloe Moretz), a ruthless, vulgarity-spewing assassin. With its high-octane, ultra-violent set pieces, “Kick-Ass” definitely earns its R rating, and director Matthew Vaughn keeps the pace of the film rockin’ like Dokken. If you’re a fan of films like “Kill Bill” or “Robo Geisha,” then you definitely need to check out “KickAss.” “The Breakfast Club” (25th Anniversary Edition) [Blu-Ray] (R) -- This film about a group of high-school stereotypes bonding during a

To answer this question, you may need to ask yourself one more: For whom am I investing? Consider the following: You’re investing for yourself. It sounds selfish, but it’s not. You may be investing in your 401(k), IRA and other investment accounts so that you can enjoy a comfortable retirement lifestyle after working your entire adult life. But you’re also investing so that you can become financially independent — free of worries that you’ll become a burden to your grown children or other family members. And given the real possibility of spending two, or even three, decades in an active retirement, it’s imperative that you put as much as you can possibly afford into those investment vehicles that can help you pursue your financial independence. You’re investing for your family. If you have children or grandchildren, you may well want to help them pay for college. And, as you know, college has gotten much more expensive in recent years, so you’ll need to save and invest from the time your children are very young, and you’ll need to choose the right investment accounts, such as a 529 college savings plan or a Coverdell Education Savings Account. But you’ll also need to think about other family members, too. Have you built up enough in your retirement accounts so that the money would be sufficient
You’re investing for your beliefs. Throughout your working years, you may try to give as much money as you can to those charitable organizations whose work you support. Yet you may wish you could do even more. And eventually, you may be able to do more. For example, if you hold an investment for many years and then sell it, you’ll have to pay capital gains taxes on any increase in value — and the capital gains tax rate of the future may not be as low as it has been over the past several years. But if you were to give the appreciated asset to a charitable organization, you could avoid paying the capital gains tax, because the organization would be the one that eventually sold the asset. Plus, you might even get a current income tax break for your contribution. You might also want to include charitable organizations in your estate plans, after consulting with your attorney or other estate tax advisor. As you can see, you’ve got some “key constituencies counting on you. By keeping them in mind, you should have the motivation you need to overlook the day-to-day ups and downs of investing — while you keep your focus on your important long-term goals. H
ow many long-distance minutes are on your prepaid phone calling card? Are you sure? Millions of people might say they’re certain what they’ve purchased, but the Federal Trade Commission has been pursuing one pre-paid card issuer after another for a laundry list of deceptive marketing infractions. That list includes: not providing the number of minutes paid for (in some cases only half the minutes), not telling users they would be charged even if the call doesn’t go through, hidden fees, destination surcharges, maintenance fees, PINs that don’t work, access numbers that are always busy, expiration dates that aren’t disclosed and more. The FTC tested cards and determined that only between 43 percent and 50 percent of the advertised time is actually available to use. The policy language, if it appears on

The fines have been significant. One company paid $1.3 million, another $2.25 million.
For good measure, also contact the Federal Communications Commission at esupport.fcc.gov/complaints.htm or 1-888-225-5322.
At this point The Calling Card Consumer Protection Act (H.R. 3993) has made its way through the U.S. House of Representatives into the Senate, where it was read twice and shuffled off to the Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation. The bill, if passed, would require disclosure of the provider’s name and customer-service number, the number of minutes or dollar value of the card, the per-minute rate, fees and charges, any time period limits or expiration dates, and refund policies.
In a sign of the times, Washington, D.C., has gotten creative. Under the common property law, any money left on a gift card becomes abandoned property and reverts to the state. Using that same theory, it claims that minutes unused on a pre-paid calling card also are abandoned property, and the value should revert to the city. It stands to recoup millions of dollars.
For the FCC fact sheet, go to www.fcc.gov and put “PrePaid Phone Card” in the search box. Look for a fact sheet called “Pre-Paid Phone Cards: What Consumers Should Know.”
