omeone once said that it’s a mother who, upon seeing only four slices of pie left to feed ďŹ ve people will promptly announce she doesn’t particularly care for that kind of pie anyway. We all want to have that kind of mother and those of us who are mothers probably want to BE that kind of mother. No matter what kind of mother we have, we set aside one day per year to ofďŹ cially honor the mothers in our lives. Paying homage to mothers was a long time coming with lots of blood, sweat and tears shed by some; but once the holiday took hold, the world embraced it with a vengeance, not to mention a lot of dollars – billions each year!

ALONG CAME WAR
MOTHERING SUNDAY
Julia Ward Howe (1819-1910), famous for authoring “Battle Hymn of the Republic, also wrote the Mother’s Day Proclamation in 1870 as a protest to the Civil War and the Franco-Prussian War. She was a champion of a Mother’s Day celebration to be held on the second Sunday in June each year in Boston; she tirelessly dedicated herself to the cause.
The Greeks held annual festivals in the spring to honor Rhea, the mother of deities of Greek mythology and the wife and sister of Cronus. Cronus was the first leader of the Titans and ruled during the Golden Age only to be overthrown by his son Zeus. Although they were a bit untraditional according to today’s standards and not a particularly nice couple, they had six children. Nonetheless, she was considered the mother of the Greek gods and goddesses.
Anna Jarvis (1864-1948) took up the cause in the early 20th century after the death of her mother, Anna Marie Reeves Jarvis. Never married and without children of her own, Jarvis is universally recognized as the mother or founder of Mother’s Day in the U.S. Her mother was a social worker and activist who believed in honoring mothers by paying tribute to their contributions to society. Jarvis and all the friends she could rally by her side began a letter-writing campaign to lobby for a government resolution of a mother’s day holiday. In just over 10 years of work, she finally got her wish when in 1914 President Woodrow Wilson signed the Joint Resolution authorizing an official Mother’s Day holiday on the second Sunday in May.
Eventually, Christians held festivals on the fourth Sunday in Lent to honor the Virgin Mary, mother of Christ. England picked up this custom in the 16th century. It was tradition to attend church services and then children would honor their mothers with flowers and other small gifts. It became important enough that employers would let their servants go for the day in order to visit their mothers.
IT WASN’T MEANT TO BE THIS WAY Jarvis’ Mother’s Day vision was that the day would be one to honor our mothers, both living and dead in activity involving reflection and prayer. She did not get her wish, as the holiday became commercialized very quickly. It was said that she was arrested at one time for disturbing the peace while protesting this commercialization. She and her sister spent all the money

The ancient Romans held festivals in the spring to honor Cybele, also a mother goddess. The festival included offerings at her temple, parades and games. Cybele was a Greek goddess with a cult following in both Greece and Rome.

they had on a campaign in protest, dyeing penniless without succeeding in their mission. Jarvis said: “A printed card means nothing except that you are too lazy to write to the woman who has done more for you than anyone in the world. And candy! You take a box to Mother – and then eat most of it yourself. A pretty sentiment.
ALL I REALLY WANT FOR MOTHER’S DAY‌ ‌are well behaved children! Over 50 percent of moms reported this wish (impossible dream?) in a survey conducted by The Mother Company. Nearly 30 percent wanted time to themselves. Only 3 percent report wanting gifts such as flowers, candy or jewelry. Maybe Jarvis had a point and knew mothers more than we do. The National Retail Federal estimates we spend a whopping $14 billion, yes billion, on Mother’s Day.
MOM TRIVIA • Oldest new mother: Satyabhama Mahapatra was a 65-year-old retired school teacher from India when she gave birth to a boy on April 9, 2003. Her child was conceived via artificial insemination. The eggs were from her 26-year-old niece and the niece’s husband provided the sperm. Mahapatra and her husband were married for 50 years at the time and had no other children.

• Highest recorded number of children: Born to one mother, wife of Feodor Vassilyev (1707-1782) of Russia. She birthed a total of 69 babies that included four sets of quadruplets, seven sets of triplets and 16 pairs of twins between 1725 and 1765; 67 of the 69 survived their infancy. Mrs. Vassilyev, whose birth name is unknown, gave birth a total of 27 times. There is some controversy surrounding the truth of these claims; nonetheless, it is recorded in the “Guinness Book of World Records.” • Longest recorded interval between children: In 1997, at the age of 60, Elizabeth Ann Buttle gave birth to son Joseph, 41.5 years after her daughter Belinda was born.
• Utah has the highest birth rate; Vermont has the lowest. • The average age of a woman giving birth for the first time in the U.S. is 24.9; in New Zealand it is 29.9 and it is 29.1 in the U.K.

A NEW ERA By Nick Yanez
W
hat was it that was so magical about the “Rock n Roll era? I, your humble correspondent, could not tell you. I wasn’t there. I was merely a future thought for two strangers who I happen to know still reminisce in the epoch. Young people like I, just hear wild tales and legends of the past. It’s even overcome many people from my generation who wear vintage band t-shirts and play records; it’s all very hip right now. And whatever that magic may be from a time period not easily forgotten, it seems it’s hard to come by. While some may be disappointed by not being able to often recreate that golden age, they can also take comfort that such good things seldom come so easy.
That’s why Rodz Bar and Grill (Located at Pinz Bowling Center) is creating it’s own legendary age with ‘Rock-n-Rodz’. It’s a new summer party day, kicking off Saturday, May 19th, and resuming the third Saturday of every summer month (May, June, July, and August). It runs all day, from 12pm-2am. It’s a day when patrons will be treated to new and soon-to-be legendary events. Old classic appeal comes in the form of Drink Specials and Live Music in the bar. You can dance, hum, or sway the

WHY ETIQUETTE? “Gimme THAT!” hollers a three-yearold from her perch in the grocery cart. “I don’t want this kind,” a six-year-old states as he unhappily chooses a lollipop from the reward bag his teacher just handed him. “I was going to invite Jordan, but he couldn’t make it, so I had to invite you,” laments an eleven-yearold boy to a classmate, as he chews an enormous bite of a sandwich—with his mouth open.
night away to classic tunes and dance hits while spending an inordinate small amount of cash consuming alcohol; which will help you get your groove on. The day will also feature new events such as a Horse Shoe Tournament. It’s doubles head-tohead-to-head-to-head show down of epic proportions. $10 for a mixed team of two to enter; bragging rights and prizes go to the winners. Then there’s the all important “free stuff” plug, which makes any event an instant classic. Rodz will have prizes and giveaways throughout the celebration, completing your day of legendary status.
“I don’t want to prepare her for a cotillion, maybe I could just get her to look up at me and stop ‘texting’ for a moment,” says the dad of sixth-grader Zoe.
It’s time to create something special; especially in our community where the potential for special seems off the roof, yet hard to find. While we know Rock-n-Rodz won’t recreate the Rock n’ Roll era, or anything like that, it will be a worthy event. Because we’re not looking to recreate, we’re looking to reinvent. This is our own era, here in the tri-lakes area. It’s the chance to create a summer unlike any other, celebrating Rock-n-Rodz with close friends and new acquaintances. It all starts now. See you Saturday.
People are mourning the loss of etiquette. “Children’s manners” is a top Google search for frustrated parents. Most parents would like their children to be well-mannered and they would like to be treated with dignity and respect—maybe even a little deference. Kids are kids and they are expected to say, and do, outrageous things at times. The days of “children should be seen and not heard” are long gone. However, children need to be aware that they are members of a large global society. As the commercial says, “Membership has its privileges.” Membership also has responsibilities—the biggest is valuing the other members.

If kids don’t display good manners, it isn’t a stretch to assume that we aren’t all properly equipped to teach children who are uninterested in learning. Most of us find our own children uninterested in learning anything from us. The problem

is then, teachers, coaches, admissions officers and bosses pass over a child that clearly does not possess the ability to behave appropriately in the given situation. Sadly, ill-mannered children, teenagers and young adults never have a chance; lack of social skills reduces their opportunities significantly. Is the trend away from good manners a consequence of increasing single parent homes, more two working parents, political correctness, video games, the Internet . . . or maybe a combination of the list? But is the question even relevant? None of these “possible causes” are going away any time soon. It becomes our job as parents to accept the culture as it is today, and teach our children good manners anyway. Arming our children with manners and values allows them the opportunity to make good choices when faced with the curve balls life will inevitably throw at them. It is okay that social standards have relaxed over the past seventy-five years. Rigidity and strict rules, like young ladies wearing pinafores and white gloves, don’t fit today’s world. But the basic tenets of etiquette still hold strong and true. Proper table manners, pleasant conversational skills, appropriate dress and the use of tact are social graces that make interacting with others agreeable. Etiquette rules that embrace the goals of respecting and valuing others make living side-by-side easier. It is hard to argue the merit of good etiquette. diabetes. Now a third way of making the diagnosis is employing HbA1C. One selling point for using it is that there’s no requirement for fasting. HbA1C of 6.5 or greater makes the diagnosis.
HOW DIABETES IS DIAGNOSED DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I have a friend whose glucose tests taken in the morning range from 140 (7.8) to 200 (11) and are never in the normal range. He is constantly thirsty and has other diabetes symptoms. His doctor ordered a hemoglobin A1C test, which came back as 5.2. The doctor told him that they no longer do the fasting blood sugar test, only the HbA1C, and that he is not diabetic, since his test is normal. Has testing for diabetes changed? Should my friend consult another doctor? -- L.P. ANSWER: Up until 2010, doctors diagnosed diabetes on the basis of blood sugar (actually plasma glucose). A relatively new test, hemoglobin A1C, HbA1C or just A1C, has been added to the criteria for both diagnosing diabetes and monitoring diabetes control in the past year or so. Hemoglobin is a large molecule inside all red blood cells that grabs oxygen from the lungs and releases it to all parts of the body as blood circulates. Blood sugar coats hemoglobin. Since red blood cells last 120 days, the percentage of hemoglobin coated with sugar indicates how well-controlled diabetes is. An acceptable control level is one that is 7 percent or less. Fasting blood sugar, the specimen taken after at least eight hours of not eating, is still used for diagnosing diabetes. A level of 126 mg/dL (7.0 mmol/L) or higher lands one in diabetes territory. A second way to diagnose diabetes is to give a person 75 grams of glucose (sugar) to eat and test the blood two hours later. A value of 200 (11.1) qualifies as
Individualized treatment for: Nasal Allergies Chronic Sinusitis Food Allergy Hives Eczema Asthma
Your friend is a diabetic. His fasting blood sugar qualifies him as being one. Furthermore, he has a diabetes symptom -- perpetual thirst. He probably has to urinate frequently, another diabetes symptom. The fact that his HbA1C is normal doesn’t cancel these facts. That test is only one of three. He should see another doctor.

ANSWER: A huge number of different germs cause the many different kinds of pneumonia. A blanket statement on transmission, therefore, is impossible. The pneumococcus (NEW-moe-KOKus) bacterium is a prominent cause of pneumonia, especially in adults and older adults. This germ can be spread in droplets coming from a cough or sneeze. However, 24 hours of treatment renders the patient no longer a transmitter.

umerous studies have shown us two things: It’s never too late to start being active, and a small amount of activity is better than none when it comes to better health. Now there’s an additional benefit: Being active helps keep depression and other psychological issues at bay. Not only that, but a recent study shows that those with “psychological distress are four times more likely to be functionally limited. The study, done on 91,000 adults age 65 and older, indicates that one-third of us don’t get regular exercise, and the number goes up even more for those 75 and older. Another study on the same topic came to a serious conclusion: Those who have depression had better results from exercising three times a

Other researchers have approached senior health from a different angle: A Psychological Bulletin news release from the Harvard School of Public Health reported on a study that compared psychological wellbeing to heart health. It found that psychological well-being reduces the chance of heart attack and stroke. Specifically, being optimistic, happy and satisfied with life can reduce the risk of a cardiovascular event. Somehow those emotions not only protect us, but can slow down existing disease.

How then do we use this information? A simplistic look might be this: If we elevate our mood with exercise and gain a sense of emotional well-being, we’re also helping our heart. And looking on the bright side of life gives an additional benefit: Those of us who are optimistic cut our risk of heart attack in half. very 3rd Wednesday in the month of May about 12:30 am Mountain Time, time stands still, traffic stops moving, everyone puts down what they are doing and they go outside and their eyes are on the sky. Why? Because American pride stops everyone in their tracks, as they watch the Thunder Birds perform their aerobatics for the Air Force Academy Graduation like no else can. First you hear them, don’t blink, they just flew by. As the jets head south, turn around in New Mexico and fifteen seconds later here they come again. Second place was taken by Abby Jones, Colorado Springs, with her interpretive dance to Pearl by Sade, and third by Emily Garlick, Colorado Springs, singing Hurt by Christina Aguilera. In the 16-21 category, it was a knock down drag out fight to see who the winners were. In the end, first place, went to Meghan Casey, 17, Westminster, Ventriloquist and Aiden her adorable dinosaur. Judge, Victor Carbonell, producer at Soteria Records said, “She makes her character come alive. After all the winners of the categories were announced, the judges were left with one more decision. Who would take Grand Prize? There were two finalists that stood above the rest, and a debate ensued. For nearly an hour the judges gathered in secret until they finally came to one conclusion. The Grand Prize winner of the Colorado You Got Talent 2012 was 18 year old Danny Devinney, Colorado Springs, singing his original rendition of A Toast to Us. Executive Director, Mattie Peltier said, “Keep your eye on this guy, he will be a star someday and we will have had the pleasure of being there at the beginning.” Judge Tom Dermody of 5 Alarm Band said, “Wow, Wow, Wow. What a fantastic talent.” Danny will be featured on Magic 98.9 FM Morning show with Lacey St Arnault, as well as record production with Soteria Records. When asked how he felt, Danny said, “This is all so amazing. I am pumped and excited about this opportunity. I just can’t believe this.”

TOMATO BLEMISH REMEDY
CREATE A HOME SPA FOR MOTHER’S DAY
This homemade spa recipe aids with facial blemishes using household ingredients. 1 ripe tomato, chopped 1 teaspoon lemon juice 1 tablespoon instant-style oatmeal or old fashioned rolled oats Blend all ingredients in a food processor or blender until just combined into a paste. Apply to blemishes on the skin, making sure mixture is thick enough to stay in place. Leave on skin 10 minutes. Remove mixture with damp washcloth, rinse and pat dry.

f you’re looking for an unusual (and budget-friendly) gift Mother’s Day, why not create a spa at home? You can pamper Mom using a few simple recipes that will make her feel loved from head to toe.
This creamy mask is an excellent moisturizer, leaving skin baby soft. Recommended for normal skin. 1/3 cup cocoa powder (not Dutch processed) 3 teaspoons heavy cream 2 teaspoons cottage cheese 1/4 cup honey 3 teaspoons instant oatmeal
Never use ingredients for your home spa treatments that you wouldn’t want to eat. Your skin, the largest organ on your body, breathes and is porous. It will absorb the properties of the ingredients you are using.
Mix all ingredients together in food processor or blender. Smooth mixture onto face. Relax for 10 minutes. Wash off with warm water and pat face dry.
STRAWBERRY HAND AND FOOT EXFOLIANT Strawberries contain a natural fruit acid that aids exfoliation. 8-10 strawberries 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 teaspoon of coarse salt, such as Kosher Salt or Sea Salt
A pretty box or basket filled with jars of your custom-made spa treatments, a decorative label you create, handwritten or printed instruction labels, and a note of appreciation for your Mom makes the perfect gift for Mother’s Day!
Mix all ingredients together into a paste using food processor or blender. Use mixture over a sink or place feet in empty tub, as the paste is messy. Massage mixture onto hands and feet. Leave on hands and feet for 10 to 15 minutes, then rinse and pat dry.
CUCUMBER HAIR TREATMENT
(Recipes courtesy of SpaIndex.com: Guide to Spas.)
If Mom loves to swim or has trouble with dry hair, this home-made spa treatment works wonders to combat the effects of chlorine damage and adds moisture to the hair.

When mixing your home spa treatments, use fresh, high quality ingredients for the best results. All of the ingredients can be found in your refrigerator, pantry or local grocery store.
Finally, ensure the containers or jars you will be using are sterile by boiling them in hot water. This will help prevent contamination of your finished product, which could lead to spoilage. Do not store the assembled spa treatments any longer than the shelf life of the most perishable ingredient.

New DVD Releases for Week of May 14, 2012 PICKS OF THE WEEK “The Grey” (R) -- A plane carrying Alaskan oil-rig roughnecks goes down in the frigid wilderness just as the wolves are getting hungry. Fortunately, Liam Neeson’s character survived the crash. Neeson plays Ottway, a man hired by the oil rig to keep wolves and bears away. Yet when they’ve crashed into the tundra and wolves are circling the survivors, some people still want to argue with the expert.
The trailer and posters suggest that this is a movie about Liam Neeson punching wolves. The script also gets a bit philosophical without getting too corny or heavyhanded. For a movie called “The Grey,” things sure get dark. Well worth checking out for a tale of grizzled determination and man-versus-wolf survival. “Chronicle” (PG-13) -- A few high-school boys develop mental powers, and it’s all fun and games -- for a while. This refreshing, character-driven movie has supernatural powers, but veers away from colorful tights and silly catchphrases. After three boys explore a mysterious hole in the ground, they come out with new psychokinetic powers that they use for tomfoolery. As their abilities grow, dark sides come out and bonds are put to the test. The whole thing is shown from the perspective of a handheld camera that the teens always seem to have with them. The
found-footage approach has been used quite a lot lately, and it’s hard to say if it brings anything to this film. What is here is an original movie with an original take on something we’ve otherwise seen before. “Rampart” (R) -- Woody Harrelson plays Dave Brown, a Los Angeles cop with a corrupt sense of duty. Brown’s life spirals out of control after he gets caught on film viciously beating a suspect. The film is tightly focused on Harrelson and his portrayal of a irredeemable, delusional man. Harrelson makes this dirty cop captivating.
job as a bounty hunter. Her first assignment is to track down Morelli (Jason O’Mara), a former cop who had a high-school fling with Stephanie. It’s a detective-themed romantic comedy romp with the lady from “Grey’s Anatomy,” so what could go wrong? The banter is excruciating, the mystery plot is dull and the Jersey accents are so bad they must be crossing some line. Even those who like Heigl will find her as irritating as the rest of us.
DOG OF THE WEEK
“Flashpoint: The Fourth Season”
“One for the Money” (PG-13) -- Based the first book in a long series of quirky mysteries, this film misses all the good parts about detective stories and just gives us the cliches and one-note characters. Stephanie Plum (Katherine Heigl) is a sassy Jersey girl who gets down on her luck and takes a

This could surprise some folks, but they’ll soon adjust. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) That unpleasant situation you hoped would go away by itself needs immediate attention before it affects an upcoming decision. Expect your supporters to rally around your cause. LEO (July 23 to August 22) You’re moving up and away from that recent setback. But remain cautious about finances. An exercise in thrift today helps cushion a possible end-ofthe-month money squeeze. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) You’re still dealing with overtones of pessimism that cause you to doubt your ability to make some needed changes. But the negative pressures will ease up by week’s end.

SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Financial strains ease by week’s end. Meanwhile, focus on cultivating that new relationship if you hope to have it blossom into something more meaningful. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Health matters once again dominate the week. Be careful not to ignore recurrences of an old problem. An almost-forgotten commitment resurfaces. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) The emergence of an unusual selfish streak could dismay those close to you. Defy it -don’t justify it -- so you can become your gracious self again. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Reassess your decision to stay with the status quo. It might seem like the sensible thing to do right now, but changes around you could make that choice a risky one. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Move decisively but cautiously when dealing with a delicate personal matter. The fewer mistakes you make now, the less likely it is that the problem will recur later on. BORN THIS WEEK: You can find beauty where many cannot. And you enjoy sharing your discovery with others.

ARE YOU PRO-LIFE?

WHAT ABOUT YOUR INVESTMENTS?
...BRING CHRIST INTO OUR FINANCIAL LIVES
PUTTING UP FOR TOMORROW’S NEEDS
unemployment. The days of want are coming. How well you plan today will determine the impact emergencies will have on your financial well-being.
ou may recall the story of Joseph and the Pharaoh. For Pharaoh everything was right -- the cattle were fat, the harvests were abundant and there was plenty of water. Yet Pharaoh was plagued with dreams of drought, famine and pestilence. Pharaoh went to his advisers for guidance and they could offer him no peace. He finally sought out Joseph who told him his dreams forecasted days of want. Joseph’s advice was simple, put up from today’s plenty for tomorrow’s needs.
That’s the role of a well thought out emergency fund. It is often recommended that 3 to 6 months of living expenses be set aside for emergencies. Given the market volatility that we’ve been experiencing, the low interest rate environment we are in, and extended unemployment, that recommendation for many could be woefully lacking. I believe there’s a better way. It starts with getting a handle on your current expenses.
Y
Now no one can say, looking over these last few years, we are in days of plenty. But things are getting better. The economy is strengthening. Now may be a good time to prepare for your days of want. How will you handle those what-ifs of life? Do you have enough money set aside for those emergencies that will come up? Emergencies do happen; whether it’s a new roof on the house, tires for the car, an unplanned medical expense or even
I would suggest reexamining all your expenses, especially those discretionary items. This is where you will find most of your unaccounted expenditures. Keep a daily journal itemizing where you are spending your money. Then eliminate all expenses that are not absolutely necessary, no matter how small. Once you know what your minimum living expenses could be, take a hard look at your income. Where is the money coming from? How stable is it?

And what happens if it stops? Where will the money come from? The gap between that income and your expenses will help you determine your emergency fund needs. When working with families I often find their preparation for financial emergencies lacking, if any planning is done at all. Far too many have experienced hardship and even financial ruin by an unexpected event. By making the time to implement a plan for those emergencies yet unknown you, like Pharaoh, should be prepared for your days of want. “Folly is joy to the senseless man, but
the man of understanding goes the straight way.” Proverbs 15:21
