he lazy days of summer are here already and some of us get downright nostalgic about summers past. Many of today’s kids might be spending their summer on the couch watching reality TV or playing Wii, but here at Snippetz we are reminiscing about outdoor summer fun. The first known roller skate was invented in 1760 by a Belgian man, Joseph Merlin. He quickly gave up the sport after he wore them to a party and crashed into a large mirror. Four-wheel roller skates that could turn, called â&#x20AC;&#x153;rocking skatesâ&#x20AC;? were invented by James L. Plimpton in 1863. A resident of New York, Plimpton opened a skating rink for gentlemen skaters so they could impress the ladies.

The idea for using a hoop as a toy has been around a long time â&#x20AC;&#x201C; a very long time. It existed in ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome, as well as 14th century England.

By the early 1900s, skating became a popular activity for all ages with both indoor and outdoor venues for racing, roller polo (hockey), figure skating and dance.

â&#x20AC;˘ The plastic tubing used for all Hula HoopÂŽ toys ever produced would stretch around the Earth more than five times. â&#x20AC;˘ Hoops have been made out of wood, grasses, bamboo and metal.

By the 1970s, skating popularity increased even more with the invention of plastic wheels and better indoor floors.

Skating centers introduced music and special lighting for skaters.

â&#x20AC;˘ At one time the innocent Hula HoopÂŽ was banned in Japan because of the indecency of the hip action while hooping.

Inline skates were introduced in the 1990s and brought inline skating and inline hockey to sports enthusiasts.

â&#x20AC;˘ On May 25, 1999, Ken Kovach of New York State set a Guinness world record for the most revolutions of a hula hoop while on a trampoline in London, England. Kovach passed through the hoop 122 times between jumps. On June 1, 2007, American Ashrita Furman set the world record

BIGGER WHEELS In the 1790s, a Frenchman crafted a â&#x20AC;&#x153;celerifere,â&#x20AC;? which had two in-line wheels connected by a beam. The rider straddled the beam and pushed the celerifere with his feet.

A German added steering to the â&#x20AC;&#x153;scooterâ&#x20AC;? in 1817. In 1839, the Scottish came up with a treadle and rod for the rear-drive.

In 1845, R.W. Thompson patented a pneumatic tube to replace the metal wheels.

Later, two French brothers â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Ernest and Pierre Michaux â&#x20AC;&#x201C; added cranks and pedals, and called their new mode of transportation the velocipede.

British engineers added ball bearings, Dunlop tires, wire-spoked wheels, a chain drive, gears and cable controls.

Like the Hula Hoop, the jump rope has stood the test of time and is now a popular sport requiring great skill, endurance and physical strength.

Traditionally considered a girls’ game and accompanied by rhymes/chants, history indicates that the game was originally a man’s sport.

Jump roping is an organized sport world wide. USA Jump Rope (USAJR) boasts a membership of hundreds of individual jumpers and teams that perform around the world. Regional and national competitions as well as camps are held at various locations around the country. The national jump rope Grand National championship will be in Long Beach, Calif. this year on June 24.

Jump roping maintains its popularity around the world. For instance, in 2006, 50,000 children and teachers representing 335 schools in The Netherlands skipped for 30 seconds. And in 85 different locations in the U.K. and Ireland, nearly 8,000 children skipped simultaneously for three minutes.

LIFE IN A BUBBLE If it weren’t for the Pear Soap Company of England, bubble blowing (and possibly cleanliness in general) would have never become popular as it did in the 19th century.

However, Flemish painters depict children blowing bubbles with clay pipes as early as the 17th century.

BUDDING PICASSO’S For those who think sidewalk chalk is child’s play, think again. Street painting originated in Italy in the 1500s as mainly artists’ depictions of the Madonna. Artists were called “madonnaro” (Madonna).

It was the middle 1900s before we saw actual bubble toys being sold. In the early 1940s, Chemtoy, a company selling cleaning supplies began bottling a bubble solution. By the late 1940s, Chemtoy was purchased by Tootsietoy Company which began retail distribution.

Italy kept up the tradition, adding to and expanding the subject matter, eventually holding the first International Street Painting Festival in 1972. The festival continues to be held annually in August.

The 1960s gave bubbles their popularity as they became the symbol of peace and harmony for the hippie generation.

Street painting became popular in the United States in the 1980s. Exhibits, com-

he never ending battle between sports and art continues. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been an age-old war, as both sides drew the lines in ancient eras. Sports set the bar with the Olympics, while art countered with things like plays and paintings. Now the NFL draws millions of viewers ever Sunday, as art sells an equal amount of digital downloads through iTunes. While one would think sports would win in a straight fist fight, art has the unique strategy of creatively avoiding the hand to hand combat; and so the war wages onâ&#x20AC;Ś Luckily, Pinz Bowling Center appreciated both sports and art equally. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s why they are hosting the one and only â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Saturday Night Inkâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; League. kay, so when did discipline become a bad word?

Those, like our parents and aunts and uncles, who raised kids over the past couple of decades or so, are sad to see what a â&#x20AC;&#x153;bum rapâ&#x20AC;? the word discipline is getting these days. They think back nostalgically to people complimenting them because their children â&#x20AC;&#x153;had discipline.â&#x20AC;?

I looked at the dictionary definition for this much maligned word, and it is still the same . . .

Discipline (dis e-plin) noun: Training expected to produce a specific character or pattern of behavior, esp. training that produces moral or mental improvement.

But what has changed? When did discipline become a bad word? There is certainly nothing in the definition of discipline that suggests abusive treatment, spanking, shaming, yelling, screaming or generally losing oneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s marbles.

So why are we afraid of disciplining our children? And why do we resort to bribing them instead?

Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t children need and want to be reignedin? Isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t it a loving parent who sets limits on inappropriate behavior? Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t children become anxious when they are allowed to lose control, to hit, to scream, to throw the items out of the grocery basket, to use bad manners, to act out in school? Is it shaming a child to point out and correct bad behavior? No! But it is a shame when our children approach adulthood without the necessary tools to be a welcome and productive member of society. It is a shame when our children donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have the skills needed to function appropriately in social settings, in school, and out in public. When parents establish behavioral standards, make their expectations clear, and respond consistently when

standards are violated, they are introducing the basic tenets of a civilized culture. Our children deserve no less.

So, discipline your kids, they will thank you for itâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;and so will their kids. And most important, love your kids up one side and down the other!

APOLOGIES Apologies are difficult. Maybe it is because it is hard to admit when weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve made a mistake or that we are wrongâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;and that we arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t perfect. But what is it about not being perfect that is so hard? No one is perfect.

So often the only apology we can muster is an insincere apology. Here are three examples: One: Apology plus excuse. If you are late, but have an excuse, you are still late. Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t apologize by making excuses, as in, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Sorry Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m late. The traffic was horrible.â&#x20AC;? That is inauthentic.

â&#x20AC;˘ The fastest known star is traveling through space at a rate of 3.5 million miles per hour.

Two: The grudging apology. This is an apology where the person says he is sorry, but the voice tone seems to be angry, as if he is gritting his teeth.

Three: The apology with a big but. Here, the apologizer starts with an apology, adds the word â&#x20AC;&#x153;butâ&#x20AC;? and shifts the blame to you. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I am sorry I yelled but you were driving me crazy.â&#x20AC;?

A sincere apology is simple and has no conditions. The tone of voice matches the words: â&#x20AC;&#x153;I am so sorry I am late.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;I am sorry I yelled.â&#x20AC;?

â&#x20AC;˘ It was in 1917 when one Dr. Walter G. Walford wrote an article warning readers of the perils of tight collars and ties, claiming that such constricting neckwear caused illness by retarding the flow of blood to the brain.

Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s it. You can follow with promises to do better next time, but make sure that the other person gets that you are truly sorry, and take full responsibility for your actions. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a sincere apologyâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;and it really isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t so hard to do, is it?

She told me she had this two months prior to her death. Was there something we could have done? I carry guilt with me every day. Is congestive heart failure a death sentence? -- S.F. ANSWER: Heart failure indicates that the heart has become a weak pump. “Congestive” often is added to “heart failure” to emphasize that the failing heart causes blood to circulate poorly. Fluid oozes out of vessels and congests body organs, especially the lungs and makes breathing difficult. Congestion also shows in swollen ankles and feet. However, not all people with heart failure show the signs of congestion.

Shortness of breath when lying down, waking from sleep gasping for breath, coughing during the night and the inability to get enough air to accomplish even light physical tasks are signs of heart failure. A study in the May issue of the journal Hypertension showed that merely walking 150 minutes per week (30 minutes a day for five days) can lower the risk in people who are genetically likely to get high blood pressure.

Researchers tracked more than 6,000 people in different categories: those who had one parent with high blood pressure, those who were not physically fit and those who were very fit.

The result: Those with high levels of physical fitness had a 42 percent lower risk, and the moderately fit had a 26 percent lower risk. To further show how exercise impacted the results, those who were very fit, even having a family predisposition, had an increased risk of only 16 percent.

On the other end of the extreme, those who had a family history and a lower level of physical fitness had a whopping 70 percent higher risk. That’s a double whammy.

D

id you know that the botanical name for bananas is Musa sapientum, which means fruit of the wise men? If you’re a wise person, you’ll stir up this tasty, healthy and easy recipe featuring bananas, which are loaded with potassium and vitamin C. 1 cup (one medium) diced banana 1 1/2 cups fresh red raspberries 1 (4-serving) package sugar-free vanilla cook-and-serve pudding mix 2/3 cup nonfat dry milk powder 1 2/3 cups water

1. In a medium bowl, combine diced banana and raspberries. Evenly spoon fruit into 4 parfait or dessert dishes.

2. In a medium saucepan, combine dry pudding mix, dry milk powder and water. Cook over medium heat until mixture thickens and starts to boil, stirring constantly. Remove from heat. Stir in coconut extract.

Spoon hot pudding mix evenly over fruit.

3. Refrigerate for at least one hour.

Top each serving with 1 tablespoon whipped topping and garnish with 1 teaspoon coconut flakes. Serves 4.

New DVD Releases for Week of June 11, 2012 PICKS OF THE WEEK “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows” (PG-13) -- Robert Downey Jr. puts his swagger and eccentricity into Sherlock Holmes in this second installment of Holmes as directed by Guy Ritchie. Don’t expect a slowly unraveling mystery -- this movie is more like the adventures of Iron Man if he didn’t have his suit and lived in Victorian-era England.

Just like last time, it has more explosions

and brawling than you might remember from the original stories, but the resulting experience is more fun than you expect.

Besides action, Downey and Jude Law (back as Dr. Watson) have plenty of quips.

The story also mixes in more brain with its brawn, as Holmes is pulled into the mind games of Moriarty.

“Good Deeds” (PG-13) -- When Tyler Perry steps out of the fat suit and wig, he’s all business. This movie starring, written and directed by the prolific Perry is one of his serious ones, and the movie will not let you forget it. Perry plays Wesley Deeds, an uptight, wealthy businessman who has had his whole life handed to him since he was born. While Deeds questions whether his life is the one he wants, he forms a bond with a destitute single mother who cleans his office. The central relationship isn’t a romantic one, but a centerpiece for the script’s meditations on morality, fairness

and charity. It’s ultimately a thoughtful, sober drama.

“In Darkness” (R) -- As the Nazis march through Poland, an anti-Semitic sewer worker finds himself taking money from Jews in exchange for hiding them in the city sewers. The film is based on the true story of Leopold Socha. As he realizes how much risk he’s taking just to get money out these desperate people, he becomes uncertain of his motivation. Could it be money, fear or humanity?

DOG OF THE WEEK “Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance” (PG-13) -- Nick Cage returns to the role of Johnny Blaze, a motorcycle stunt man who’s made a pact with the devil. In exchange for saving his father’s life, Blaze sometimes becomes the Ghost Rider, a supernatural bounty hunter with a flaming

skull head and a flaming chain weapon that he swings from a motorcycle engulfed in flames.

Come on. Take the one of the kookiest men in Hollywood, cast him as a superhero with a flaming skull in a sequel directed by the guys who did “Crank” and “Crank: High Voltage,” and you would expect something more exciting -- or at least something notably more insane than its banal predecessor.

Nope. This movie rides right out of your memory with the spirit of vengeance.

Summer is upon us, the kids are out of school, and we all have the bug to travel! Here are websites that can help you figure out where to go, whether it's a quick Colorado weekend trip or a two week whirlwind tour of Europe.

The best of the best has got to be TravelZoo.com More than 2,000 companies from around the world list their very best offers with TravelZoo. TravelZoo has deal experts located in 25 offices across North America, Europe and Asia who research, evaluate and test thousands of deals to find the best deal to offer you. You can also be added to their database to receive deals on a regular basis.

LODGING 1. Hotels.com lets you search just one site for accommodations at more than 130,000 properties. You can find particularly good lastminute deals, which are updated every Thursday.

2. Priceline.com offers you its Shatner-faced Negotiator to help you haggle for the best bargains on hotels. Select a minimum star class, your dates of stay and preferred neighborhood, and then name your price.

3. With LateRooms.com, you can find great last-minute bargains at international hotels. LateRooms also lists special offers, including "secret room" deals with deeply discounted rates at four- and fivestar properties. The rub, as with Priceline, is that you won't know the exact hotel until after you pay.

4. TripAdvisor is the most popular hotel-review site. TripAdvisor doesn't sell rooms or offer any actual deals, but it links you to partner sites, such as Expedia, Travelocity and Hotels.com. Click on the "check rates" button and select the site or sites you'd like to try.

5. To find a smaller inn or B&B, try searching BedandBreakfast.com. It gives details on even the tiniest inns and points to "hot deals" in your desired location. You can also search for specific amenities, such as a hot tub, a fireplace or whether a place is pet-friendly.

Hotels often create promotional offers that include, for example, continental breakfasts or some other add-ons along with the room. WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF INVESTING?

That means putting up from today’s abundance for tomorrow’s needs -- putting together a plan, a strategy for security, relevant to your own individual needs -- then choosing a strategy and investments that fulfill those needs.

hen I am conducting a workshop or seminar on investing I will often start by asking the question “Why invest?” The first answer I receive is always “to make money”, oftentimes it’s “to make as much money as I possibly can.” That is quickly followed by “so I don’t have to work,” and “to have as much as everybody else.”

A sound investment strategy should achieve four goals. First, it should provide a degree of safety. By that I don’t mean burying your money in the back yard. It’s about understanding what it is you are buying, the true value of the investment and paying a fair price.

I would like you to take a moment and think about those answers. “To make as much as I possibly can,” – the chasing of wealth is known as greed. “So I don’t have to work,” – that’s sloth. “To have as much as everybody else,” – envy.

Far too often we are making our investment decisions based on sin, and then wondering why they didn’t work out. I believe there is a better way -- one that’s based upon being the good steward of the gifts that God has bestowed upon us.

It starts with the recognition that everything, including our wealth and investments, are gifts from God. And that we are called upon to use those gifts as a celebration of His blessings. For investors, that
