SNIPPETZ TRAVELS BACK IN TIME CAPSULES by Deborah Stumpf

“We seem to have a compulsion these days to bury time capsules in order to give those people living in the next century or so some idea of what we are like. - Alfred Hitchcock According to Merriam-Webster, a time capsule is “a container holding historical records or objects representative of current culture that is deposited (as in a cornerstone) for preservation until discovery by some future age. Time capsules have been a fascinating topic since the turn of the 20th century. In an effort to improve historical records, some have used time capsules in the hope that future generations – thousands of years from now – will have a better understanding of life on earth right now.

as “the first successful attempt to bury a record of this culture for any future inhabitants. The Crypt was the brainchild of Thornwell Jacobs (1877-1956), president of Oglethorpe University at the time and considered the father of the modern time capsule. Jacobs presented his idea in 1936 and work quickly began on the structure and contents.

were: • • • •

Paul Hudson, author William Jarvis, author and former head of acquisitions/serials at Washington State University Library Dr. Brian Durrans, anthropologist and consultant; former senior curator at the British Museum Knute “Skip Berger, author and executive director of the Washington Centennial Time Capsule project

The Crypt is housed in a chamber within the foundation of the Phoebe Hearst Memorial Hall. This is a Gothic granite building believed to be able to stand for another 2,000 to 5,000 years. The chamber was previously a swimming pool and its floor has been raised with an additional 2 feet of concrete and a 7 foot thick stone roof. Its granite walls have been lined with porcelain enamel. Based on advice from the Bureau of Standards in Washington, Jacobs lined the inside of the Crypt with stainless steel receptacles lined with glass and filled it with the inert gas of nitrogen to help protect the contents from oxidation. The outer door is also stainless steel.

Besides educating the public about time capsules, the ITCS has established a clearinghouse of information pertaining to time capsules along with a registry of those in existence. They believe there are about 10,000 capsules located around the world. Unfortunately, most of them have likely been destroyed or lost. It is no coincidence that the ITCS is headquartered at Oglethorpe University. It is the home of the Crypt of Civilization and the committee’s first meeting was on the 50th anniversary of this famous time capsule’s sealing.

Much of its contents are in the form of microfilm in hermetically sealed receptacles. Jacobs enlisted the help of Thomas Kimmwood Peters (1879-1973), an inventor and photographer, to take on the task of this documentation. Peters was famous for being the only newsreel photographer to capture the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. He was also the inventor of the microfilm camera.

THE CRĂˆME DE LA CAPSULE Possibly the granddaddy of them all, the Crypt of Civilization has been recorded in the 1990 Guinness Book of World Records

For three years, Peters and a group of students produced more than 640,000 pages of microfilm. As a backup, the same data was stored on metal film. Included in the documentation are over 800 works of the arts and sciences along with the classics – the Bible, the Iliad, Dante’s Inferno, the

Koran. Both still and motion pictures are part of the collection as well as voice recordings of political leaders and others in the news – Hitler, Mussolini, Roosevelt, Popeye the Sailor and a hog caller. Jacobs saw this crypt not only as a snapshot of life in the 1930s, but also a compilation of knowledge gained about the prior 6,000 years. The crypt includes thousands of items including a specially sealed ampule of Budweiser Beer donated by Anheuser Busch, a set of Lincoln logs, a Donald Duck toy, dress patterns, an electric razor, dress patterns, a golf ball, soap, plastic utensils, fishing rod, fly swatter, clothing, radio, lamp and hair adornments, to name only a few. The planned opening of the Crypt of Civilization is May 28, 8113 A.D. This is 6,177 years from 1936 when the work on the Crypt began. The reason for this odd number is that most historians agree the Egyptian calendar likely first began with 4241 B.C., considered the first fixed date in history. This was 6,177 years prior to 1936.

A LOT CAN HAPPEN IN 6,177 YEARS This did not escape Jacobs and Peters who have attempted to provide the equipment necessary for future civilizations to read and listen to materials left for their perusal. Microreaders, projectors and electric machines have been included. Just in case there is no electricity as we know it today,

The capsule is scheduled for opening on July 4, 2025 and contains 5,000 items including a man’s leisure suit and a Chevy Vega. Davisson wanted to ensure his capsule was the largest in the world, so built a second capsule on top of the first one in 1983 just to be sure. This capsule was reburied and is planned for reopening every 100 years so that the latest preservation techniques may be utilized. t’s 4:35am. Clive awakes in a panic, his vision a blur. He bounces up resting on his elbows before taking a breath and a look around. He finds himself on a sidewalk in his clothes from last night. He is groggy and aloof as he feels his tongue seeping out to give moisture to the cracks in his lips. As he sees the sunlight glowing just behind the horizon, he checks his watch and starts back home.

He reaches his apartment by 5:00am and digs his keys out from his coat pocket. He stumbles into the apartment and undresses. Clive heads to the bathroom to take a shower. When the water pours down upon him, he begins to regain the color in his face. His eyes widen and as his vision clears, his memory begins to come back. He remembers the taxi he took just four blocks so he wouldn’t be late. He remembers John, Kelly, Pots, and Helen. He remembers the laughs and the drinks, the food and more drinks. He remembers walking home. He remembers kissing the stranger. He remembers the fight with the other one. He remembers the dive on the corner of Chapman and 8th. He remembers a shot and a lime. As he dresses himself to begin the day, Clive remembers something else. He looks up into the mirror and sees

it clear as day. Suddenly, he remembers the 1960’s showgirl on horseback he tattooed across his chest; though he can’t begin to recall why… We can all learn a solid lesson from Clive in responsibility; if you’re going to get a tattoo, get something with purpose and get it sober. This is why Pinz Bowling Center is welcoming guests to join their Saturday Night Ink League. It’s an opportunity to a variety of adults to get together weekly, have a good time, not overspend, and get a new tattoo – with the time to think about what to get. Because at the conclusion of the 20-week League, every member will receive a $100 gift card to Nostalgia Tattoo Company! That means every League Bowler comes out a winner. With the weekly meditation of Bowling, you’ll have sufficient time and mind to come up with the perfect tattoo for you. Plus, it takes place every Saturday night at 7:30pm, which means you won’t get lost in the city and wake up on some sidewalk. You’re at Pinz, the place that offers free rides home to those who can’t find their way. So avoid pulling a Clive and having the memory of a western showgirl on your pectoral every night. Be patient and have fun; join the Saturday Night Ink League at Pinz this week!

SIBLING RIVALRY

anine Finch and her sister, MaryBeth Tanner, keep track of whose kids their mother babysits more. They also compete with each other over parenting styles and their weight. Even after siblings grow up, rivalry and one-upmanship continue to crop up. Experts say adult sibling rivalry is one of the most harmful and least addressed issues in a family. We know it when we see it. Often, we deeply regret it. But we have no idea what to do about it. The sisters have been competitive since childhood—about clothes, boyfriends, grades. Ms. Finch remembers how in grammar school her sister wrote an essay about their grandfather and won a writing award. She recited it at a school assembly with her grandpa standing nearby, beaming. Ms. Finch, seething, vowed to win the award the next year and did. Ms. Tanner married first. Ms. Finch, single at the time, clearly recalls the phone call when her sister told her she was pregnant. “I was excited because this was the first grandchild. Then I got off the phone and cried for two hours, says Ms. Finch. Ms. Tanner, 33 and a stay-at-home-mom in East Aurora, New York, remembers that she too felt jealous—of her sister’s frequent travel and promotions in her marketing career. “The way my parents would go on and on about her really made me feel ‘less than,’ Ms. Tanner says. Sibling rivalry is a normal aspect of childhood, experts say. Our siblings are our first rivals. They competed with us for the love and attention of the people we needed most, our parents, and it is understandable that we

occasionally felt threatened. Much of what is written about sibling rivalry focuses on its effects during childhood. But our sibling relationships are often the longest of our lives. Several research studies indicate that up to 45% of adults have a rivalrous or distant relationship with a sibling. People questioned later in life often say their biggest regret is being estranged from a sister or brother.

PUTTING A STOP TO SIBLING RIVALRY •The ďŹ rst step is to think. Who is this person outside his or her relationship with you? What do you like about your sibling? Remember the positive memories. Identify why you think the relationship is worth fixing. •Take the initiative to change. It could be a gesture, like an offer to help, a conversation or a letter. Be sincere and don’t ignore the obvious. Say: “These conversations between us are painful. I would like to see if we can make our relationship better.â€? •Gestures count. Not everyone is comfortable talking about a strained relationship, especially men. But phone calls, invitations to spend time together, attempts to help should be seen as peace offerings.

• It was pop art icon Andy Warhol who made the following sage observation: “It’s the movies that have really been running things in America since they were invented. They show you what to do, how to do it, when to do it, how to feel about it, and how to look when you feel about it.â€?

•Consider your sibling’s point of view. Try not to be defensive. What did childhood look like through his or her eyes? •Tell your sibling what you respect. “I love your sense of humor.â€? “I admire what a good parent you are.â€?

• You probably know that the 1939 film “The Wizard of Ozâ€? was based on the book “The Wonderful Wizard of Ozâ€? by L. Frank Baum. You may not realize, though, that Baum wrote a total of 14 Oz books between 1900 and 1920. The series continued even after the author’s death; Ruth Plumly Thompson produced one Oz book every year between 1921 and 1939.

WHAT IS NAIL FUNGUS INFECTION?

H

ere are some very simple ways to recognize a toenail fungus infection:

• A discoloration of the toenail, white to yellow • The nail becomes thick and disfigured • A stinging pain from under and around the nail • Brown or black spots developing on the nail • Parts of the nail crumble or flake off • A foul odor coming from the nail • Toenail falling off entirely Onychomycosis is the medical term for toenail fungus. Many people suffer with toenail fungus. In fact almost 12% of the population may be infected at some point in their lives according to the American Academy of Dermatology. Washington Podiatrist Lee Firestone estimates that fifty percent of people over the age of 70 have the infection.

HOW DOES A NAIL BECOME INFECTED? Toenails come into contact with microorganisms that get onto the skin, the nail sheath and underneath the nail to the nail bed. These places can easily become the perfect environment for infection. Once you have contracted a fungal infection, it can be very difficult to cure. These microorganisms are fungal spores, and thrive in places that are

dark and have high humidity. This makes the feet very susceptible to infection from wearing shoes. Especially because many people wear the same pair of shoes day in and day out, not allowing time for them to dry and air between wearings. Wearing sandals helps the feet to get air circulation and light.

Trimming your toenails too close to the skin can cause accidental cuts, providing another entry point for these fungal spores. Injuries such as dropping something on your toes can provide another point of fungal entry. All utensils used for pedicures should be disinfected in order to not spread the fungus. Wear flip flops when using a public shower at the gym to avoid infection.

Tight fitting shoes can also be a cause of toenail fungus infection since they leave no room for your feet to breathe and they can cause the breakdown of the nail from rubbing, leaving an opening for the fungus to invade.

Laser treatment can be effective 70 -84% of the time. The laser warms the nail and kills the pathogens that cause the fungus. Several treatments may be needed. The drug Lamisil has been used to treat the fungus, however, it has side effects causing possible liver problems in some individuals. Laser treatment along with a regular home foot care schedule is beneficial in the treatment of the fungus that causes Onychomycosis.

any of us have retired and then discovered that retirement isn’t all it was cracked up to be. Maybe we got pushed out by downsizing. Maybe we felt the time had come to stop working because we’d reached a certain age. Now many of us miss having a purpose, structure and a reason to get up every day. Certainly we miss the people we worked with and feeling valuable. Often we’re simply bored. If you go online and Google the words “seniors retired bored” you’ll get more than 7 million hits. But here is a truth: We don’t have to stay retired.

Think back: What did you truly want to do with your life? Many women were pushed into mother and wife roles. If you’re a man, perhaps a college education wasn’t possible, so you created the best life you could. But now you have time -- and opportunities. If you’re lucky enough to live near a college or university, inquire about auditing (no credit) classes on topics that interest you. Maybe you’ll even go on to get a degree. Make a list of everything you know how to do, and offer to teach a class. Reading, swimming safety, woodworking, sewing, bookkeeping, photography, art, home repair and other skills are all valuable to someone else.

New DVD Releases for Week of June 18, 2012 PICKS OF THE WEEK “Big Miracle” (PG) -- This based-on-atrue-story family flick tells the tale of three trapped whales and the people who come together to save them. A likable young TV reporter in small-town Alaska (John Krasinksi) finds out about a family of whales stuck under the ice, cut off from the ocean. What starts as a local news piece becomes a story watched by the whole nation as an activist (Drew Barrymore) and many oth-

ers (it’s a big cast) get involved. Krasinski brings his “Jim from “The Office” charm, and helps keep the movie light. It is, after all, a movie set in the real world -- where saving the whales requires help from such cynical sources as politicians and oil executives. The balance between reality and feel-good is impressive, and successfully delivers the warm, fuzzy feeling. “Wanderlust” (R) -- Linda (Jennifer Anniston) and George (Paul Rudd) are a Manhattan couple frayed and overpressured by the big city life. When George loses his job, the couple decide to pack it in and start over somewhere else. On their way to Atlanta, they stumble upon Elysium, a sort of hippie commune full of friendly weirdos who invite the couple to stay. The bottom line is this: David Wain writes, directs and edits funny things. He has many funny friends whom he casts in his

movies, and they usually give great performances. His works usually fall in with the absurd, subversive and cultish, but this film is aimed at a slightly broader audience. “Wanderlust” (which he directed and cowrote) isn’t his finest work, but it certainly produces laughs. “Jeff Who Lives at Home” (R) -- Jeff (Jason Segal) is 30, lives in his mother’s basement and doesn’t have much besides a firm belief in destiny. His older brother, Pat (Ed Helms), has a wife (Judy Greer), a job and an unimpressive place to live. While running an errand for their mother, Jeff gets caught up in Pat’s neurotic plot to catch his wife cheating. An awkward, funny, authentic story comes together over the rest of that day. “Project X” (R) -- A handful of middleclass suburban teenagers throw a megahuge party, and film the whole thing. It’s

12

not a wild premise. The most audacious thing about it is that the movie uses the found-footage perspective, and expects that to bring this non-story to life. The result is 87 minutes of mean-spirited adolescent humor. The characters and filmmakers have seized upon the tenets of repugnant high-school mentality: women are sex objects sent to earth to frustrate young men; anybody different must be ridiculed; and everything is a competition.

Vacation Planning Websites -- Air & Car Part 2 of 4

.....continued from last week We all know that there are airfare search sites such as Expedia.com, Priceline.com, and Cheapair.com. But then there's a whole different animal: The airfare listing and alert site! AIRFARES 1. Kayak.com scours hundreds of online sources for the cheapest fares available. The more flexible you are on time and destination, the better your chances of finding a great deal. With the site's Explore tool, you can scan a world map for all the destinations you can reach within a specified price range. 2. BingTravel.com gives you a recommendation to either buy a ticket now or wait for a fare based on its "price predictor." The price predictor forecasts whether fares on major domestic routes will go up or down. 3. AirfareWatchdog.com works best for travelers ready to take off at the drop of a hat. The site has workers lurking on airline Web sites in anticipation of fare sales. The site includes fares from Southwest, JetBlue and other small airlines that may not appear on bigger search sites, such as Kayak and Bing. 4. WhichBudget.com will help you build an inexpensive overseas flight plan by using local, budget airlines - a great way to save on international travel. It's based on a comprehensive list of airlines servicing 170 countries. 5. Yapta.com will track a flight's price for you after you buy your ticket. If the costs drop below what you paid, most airlines and online travel agencies will refund the difference, usually in the form of travel credits or vouchers. 6. Bestfares.com will show a listing of fares to hundreds of airports from your city. These fares include some but not all taxes, and you'll also see "member only fares" listed along with "published" fares. 7. Farecompare.com is the new breed of automated fare comparison and alert systems. Sign up for as many individual city pair alerts as you like, and you can also choose to see only those fares that have hit their historical low point or that have gone down by a lesser amount.

8. Farecast.com is best known for predicting where an airfare on a particular route is going to go (up, down, or stay the same) over a period of time. 9. Orbitz.com is a well-known online travel agency is best known for its fare search capabilities (like Farecast, it runs on ITA Software). But Orbitz also offers fare alerts with its "Deal Detector" (find it under the heading in the lower left of the home page under "Orbitz deals — delivered to you"). 10. Sidestep.com just added a unique fare alert product that allows you to track a specific airfare. To use this service, you need to first search for a fare between two cities. Once that's done you'll see the option to track the fare, and you can choose to track either nonstop or connecting/direct flights over a flexible travel date period of between 7 and 30 days in either direction of the dates for which you originally searched, which is a unique feature. 11. Smartertravel.com is the granddaddy of airfare information sites recently added a "deals at a glance" area under the "deals" tab that shows a selection of advertised fare deals. But the site is perhaps best known for its extensive and easily sorted reporting on last minute weekend deals, which are sent out by email or can be seen online. CAR RENTALS 1. Hotwire.com often offers the best published deals on cars by collecting rates from its seven rental car company partners, including Budget, Enterprise and Europcar. The site also offers "hot deals" from rental companies that won't be identified until after you've paid. With cars, the risk in taking the blindbooking approach is minimal: A minivan is a minivan, no matter which company provides it. (You can also head back to Priceline.com to try bidding for a better bargain on your rental car.) 2. AutoEurope.com's specialty are bargains. Auto Europe offers rentals at more than 8,000 locations worldwide. And if you have any problems with the rental-car provider you're hooked up with, Auto Europe will help you resolve them.
