magine not knowing much about the planet you live on and its relationship with the solar system in which it inhabits. That’s what it was like for the ancient Egyptians, Native Americans, Aztecs and others. What did they think of the sun, the central star of our solar system? They knew it was important enough to study. They watched and made connections, followed by building stone structures to mark the movement of both the sun and the moon. They noted sunrises and moonrises, seasons and eclipses. And for a long time, Earth’s inhabitants believed that the other planets and stars revolved around the Earth. Well, at least they had the part right about how the sun drives the seasons and the climate, not to mention without the sun we could not survive.

about 93 million miles. • Its radius is about 418,000 miles • It is located 25,000 light years from the center of the Milky Way • It is estimated to be 4.57 billion years old
The sun demands a lot of respect, which is an obvious point when you understand its power and size – about one million Earths could fit inside the sun. It is made up of almost 74 percent hydrogen, 25 percent helium and just over 1 percent of other elements such as oxygen, carbon, neon, iron, nitrogen, silicon, magnesium and sulfur. The sun is not solid, but stays together by gravitational attraction.
SUN SPOTS We can’t see them with the naked eye, but the sun has spots or areas of darkness that appear regularly on either side of its equator. These spots have been the object of much scientific study as well as speculation by many. Some think they are the cause of Earth’s climate change; others say they cause static on the radio stations or dropped cell calls; and some think they are the source of paranormal activity or UFO’s.
Its core temperature is about 27 million degrees Fahrenheit, which causes thermonuclear fusion. All this energy radiates out of the core through the sun’s other two zones – radiative and convective – taking about 170,000 years to end up at the convective zone. At this outer zone, it’s a chilly 3.5 million degrees Fahrenheit.
Super simplified: Because the sun is a big mass of hot gas, the outer surface and inner core zones move at different rates and directions. This distorts the magnetic field, causing cool spots that seem to push the hotspots deeper into the core. And because they are cooler, they appear darker.
Beyond these three zones is the sun’s atmosphere, also made up of three zones – photosphere, chromosphere and the corona at the outermost region.

Sun spots tend to appear in groups or pairs and vary widely in size with the average being the size of Earth. One sun spot in 2004 was 20 times the size of Earth. They also vary in how long they last - some less than an hour and some lasting for several months. But they definitely have a pattern, which scientists refer to as the sunspot cycle. ry, Greenwich in London have been watching and recording sunspots since 1874. Records indicate that in cycles of about 11 years, the number of sunspots go from about zero to a peak of more than 100 and then back down to zero. They are concentrated in two latitude bands that flank both sides of the equator. Astronomer Mausumi Dikpati recently theorized that the sun acts somewhat like a conveyor belt continuously circulating plasma, or electrified gas, between the equator and the poles and back again. The magnetic fields become distorted and the plasma shoots out near the equator in repeated cycles. Sunspot activity at its peak is referred to as “solar maximum. During times of minimal or no sunspot activity, this is called “solar minimum. Usually these dormant times are quite short, but astronomer Edward W. Maunder recorded a 60-year solar minimum between 1650 and 1710. Astronomers refer to this period as the Maunder Minimum and is still a source of mystery.
Out of the mouths of sunspots can erupt solar flares. These flares are likely caused by magnetic field changes. They release gas, ultraviolet and visible light, x-rays and electrons into the atmosphere, sending them to Earth. Here Comes the Sun... Continued on Page 3

This interaction produces the aurora borealis and aurora australis. The ionized particles also wreak a whole lot of havoc with communications, power grids, satellites and power lines, not to mention what they do to our cell phone reception. A more recent example of a flare was during a solar maximum in 1989 which caused a power surge leaving about 6 million Canadians and northeastern Americans with no electricity for several hours.
ECLIPSING A SIGHT TO BEHOLD A full solar eclipse is rare and a likely source of delight for an astronomer. An eclipse takes place when the moon passes between the Earth and sun in a direct line, causing a blockage of sunlight. That saying “the moon and the stars have to align just right” applies here. The moon will only pass the Earth’s orbital plane twice per year, called eclipse seasons. In order to have a solar eclipse, this must be a new moon. There are three types of solar eclipses: total, partial and annular. Total and partial are obvious and annular means we can only see a ring-like slice of light around the sun. One more variable: The moon has two parts in its shadow – the central (umbra) and outer (penumbra). If the umbra is passing over the Earth, we see a total eclipse and darkness as if nighttime. If the penumbra passes over us, we experience a partial eclipse. An annular solar eclipse happens when the moon is farther away. In this case, we only see that sliver of light around the sun. Even in a total eclipse, we will still see the sun’s corona, its farthest outer layer. The next total eclipse will be Nov. 13 of this year, but Americans will have to travel to northern Australia to get a good look. The partial eclipse during this event can be viewed from Indonesia, Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific Ocean.

of energy on Earth. It fuels photosynthesis where plants convert solar energy to oxygen. Talk about life sustaining. • The UV light has antiseptic properties and is used to sanitize water and other things. • It aids in the production of vitamin D. • It can generate electricity and provide direct heat.
The bad As necessary as the sun is to our survival, it also has its drawbacks. UV radiation causes sunburns, skin cancer and damage to the eye. It is also theorized that the solar weather effects change in our climate.

According to the Center for Disease Control, skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in this country. The most common types are basal cell and squamous cell, both of which are very curable. Melanoma, however, is much more dangerous and life threatening. Although routine screening for skin cancer is not specifically recommended by the CDC, the organization does suggest that physicians/clinicians be specifically watchful of the fair-skinned over the age of 65 with atypical moles. The responsibility lies with each individual to be aware of changes in skin or moles that might indicate cancer cells brewing. A trip to the doctor or dermatologist is essential.
PREVENTION FIRST The CDC reminds us that sun damage can happen during any season or weather condition. It doesn’t have to be a bright sunny day to experience UV exposure. UV rays cut through clouds and will also reflect off water, snow, sand and cement surfaces. Indoor tanners are not immune from UV damage as these devices use UV rays.

One more warning: Do not attempt to view the sun or sunspots with the naked eye. There is much information available on the Internet from credible sources that provide instruction on how to view the sun and/or its spots. It is indeed true that looking directly at the sun can cause significant and permanent damage to the eyes, and direct viewing through a telescope can ruin a telescope’s lens.

THE IMPORTANCE OF A GOOD REPUTATION
A
reputation is something that you give birth to, but the way it develops depends on the actions of others. Your reputation lives a very real existence apart from you, representing what everyone thinks about you. It is based partially on your own actions but also on the perceptions others have about others’ perceptions of your actions. We only ever have influence over our reputation—never control—but it remains one of our most precious assets (more important than a job, house, car, or even— money). Our reputation represents the way others look at us. That can be of the utmost importance or utterly trivial. If we have a healthy self-esteem we won’t need others to think well of us—although we may want them to. Those of us with strong self-esteem are still part of the community and need a good reputation for practical purposes— friendship and in order to earn a living are probably the two biggest reasons. It’s hard to have friends if people think you’re mean-spirited and hard to make a living in any capacity if people think you’re lazy, unreliable, or dishonest. In all things, it’s harder to build than to destroy. Building a good reputation requires effort, patience, and time. Destroying a good reputation only requires a single moment’s misstep. The secret to building a good reputation? Become a person who deserves one. Take consistent action that embodies the characteristics you want others to associate with you. Don’t
just mouth the platitudes of hard work, attention to detail, loyalty, and drive—live them. In fact, don’t mouth them at all. Let others discover them in you. A reputation is fragile and requires constant feeding. Consistency is crucial. If you live up to your reputation 99 percent of the time but fail to do so 1 percent of the time, you risk disproportionate damage if the person you let down is highly influential. You can’t stop others from maligning you, but a good reputation can come to your rescue when other people who know you rise to your defense without your even knowing it. We are, in fact, all caretakers of one another’s reputations. Sometimes you may not feel you deserve your reputation, that it’s better than you are. Rather than lament your weaknesses, let your good reputation serve as motivation for you to try to improve yourself.
• The martial art that is known today as karate actually originated in India and spread to China before becoming popular in 17th-century Japan, where it was dubbed karate, which means “empty handâ€? in Japanese.
As a marketing strategy, a good reputation can be very powerful. When I find a service provider who performance outshines their competition, they become like gold to me. I recommend them enthusiastically to others, and don’t begrudge paying them what they’re worth.
by Samantha Weaver
• It is still not known who made the following sage observation: “Never attribute to malice what can be adequately explained by stupidity.â€?
Some may think reputation doesn’t matter, that we should all focus on doing our best and let others think what they may. Caring about our reputation doesn’t mean we need others to like us. It means that we, as human beings, strive to be the best we can be and use that as our simple goal.
• If you are an aďŹ cionado of the word game Scrabble, you probably know that there are only five words that can be played using a q but no u. In case you’re not in the know, those words are “faqir,â€? “qaid, “ “qoph, “ “qindarâ€? and “qintar. “
Heather Buchman is a certified etiquette trainer who teaches in the Tri-Lakes area. Visit her website at socialsurvivalskills. net.
• In 1774, surveyors in Maryland marked off a parcel of land by mistake. The error was immortalized when the town that grew up on that land adopted the name Accident.
fun
• The English word “mistletoeâ€? comes from an Anglo-Saxon phrase that means “dung on a twig.â€? It seems that the branches where mistletoe is often found have white splotches on them, which some say resemble bird droppings.

Grace Bedell wrote to Lincoln that a beard would make him “look a great deal better, for your face is so thin. has spread -- it is still quite curable. Your daughter can trust her doctor to take the appropriate steps depending on the results of her Pap test. She does not face a death sentence. If she has any questions about her diagnosis, she should call her doctor for an explanation of her test results.

The booklet on cervical cancer and Pap smears deals with these issues in detail. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 1102W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 328536475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: My husband and I are both 28. We have one child, a son. My husband felt a lump in his testicle and saw our family doctor. It turned out to be cancer. He was operated on. The doctor discussed many things with us, but we never discussed the prognosis.
ANSWER: All women are indebted to Dr. George Papanicolaou, who developed the Pap smear for the early detection of cervical cancer. The cervix, by the way, is the necklike projection of the uterus into the vagina. It was the site for the most common cause of cancer death in women before the Pap smear came into wide use. That was in the early 1940s. Since then, deaths from cervical cancer have been cut in half, with about 4,200 deaths occurring annually and 12,200 new cases detected each year. Most of the deaths are in women who did not have Pap smear testing. I’m not clear what you mean by “a few cells of this kind.” If the cells obtained on a smear show low-grade changes, a woman’s chances of having cervical cancer are close to zero. Follow-up smears are the only treatment needed. If the cells show high-grade changes, the doctor will perform a colposcopy. Colposcopy is an examination of the cervix with an instrument that has a magnifying lens so suspicious areas can be readily seen and biopsied. Results determine what the next steps should be. However, at these stages -- long before the cancer

SUSPICIOUS PAP SMEAR ISN’T DEATH SENTANCE DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Will you please say a few words about the prognosis and treatment of cervical cancer? My daughter, 45, was told at a recent checkup that she has a few cells of this kind, and she is reacting as if she has received a death sentence. Since it was caught early, should her outlook be more cheerful? -- J.B.

Your husband’s story is something that all young men should take to heart. Testicular cancer is a cancer of young men, most often males between the ages of 15 and 35. The earliest sign is a small, painless lump in the testicle. *** Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. what the specific discount age is, because some places use 55, or 60, or 62 or even 65. Ask if there are any restrictions. For example, grocery stores often limit the senior discounts to one day a week. Movie theaters might give the discount only during matinees on certain days of the week.

ow that summer is here and we’re all out and about more often, we need to find ways to cut our expenses. There are discounts available in more places than you’d suspect. Asking for discounts locally can be a bit difficult if you’ve never done it. No one wants to stand in a checkout line talking with a cashier about your age while others are waiting, but I’ve discovered the easiest way to get started: Make a list of all the places you generally go: grocery stores, retail shops, theaters, restaurants, hair salons, bookstores and anywhere else. Call them all up and ask whether they offer a senior discount. Ask

• On June 29, 1613, the Globe Theater, where most of Shakespeare’s plays debuted, burns down. The Globe was built in 1599 from the timbers of London’s very first permanent theater, Burbage’s Theater. The galleries could seat about 1,000 people, with room for another 2,000 “groundlings,â€? who could stand around the stage. • On June 28, 1888, writer Robert Louis Stevenson and his family leave San Francisco for their first visit to the South Seas. Stevenson, an adventurous traveler plagued by tuberculosis, was seeking a healthier climate. His novel “Treasure Islandâ€? was published in 1883.

f you love strawberries as much as I do, then you’ve been watching the patch as steadfastly as I have (and it really doesn’t matter if your “patch” is in your backyard or at your grocery store). Strawberries With Chocolate-Almond Cream Sauce is the current “most favorite” strawberry recipe for you to try.
1. Spoon 1 cup sliced strawberries into 4 dessert dishes. In a large bowl, combine dry pudding mix, dry milk powder and water. Mix well, using a wire whisk. Blend in whipped topping and almond extract. Evenly spoon about 1/2 cup pudding mixture over strawberries in each dish. 2. In a small bowl, combine chocolate chips and almonds. Evenly sprinkle 1 1/2 teaspoons chips mixture over top of each. Refrigerate for at least 15 minutes. Serves 4.

New DVD Releases for Week of June 25, 2012 PICKS OF THE WEEK
“The Artist” (PG-13) -- Yes, this is the silent one. A movie that came out last year was made without sound or color, and then it brought home five Oscars, including best picture and best actor. It’s natural to suspect it of being a high-brow snoozefest -- it’s a silent film that came out in 2011, and yet all the critics love it. But there’s nothing inaccessible about it; it’s just an earnest, old-fashioned movie that entertains. Set in 1927, George Valentin (Jean DuJar-
din) is the biggest star on the silent-movie scene just as talkies are about to take off. While his career loses momentum and starts to fall, young actress Peppy Miller starts her climb to the top. “Mirror Mirror” (PG) -- The wicked queen (Julia Roberts) is a wildly vain woman who spends her kingdom into financial trouble, apparently by investing all the nation’s wealth on elaborate costume design for her and the court. Snow White (Lilly Collins) is pretty in face and bland of personality, but manages to catch the eye of the wealthy young prince (Armie Hammer.) Director Tarsem Singh injects every frame with vivid color and elaborate designs. The visual flair isn’t enough to make the story shine, however. But don’t worry, if you still want a visually stunning retelling of Snow White, Hollywood has another one just around the corner.
“21 Jump Street” (R) -- Loosely (very loosely) based on the ‘80s TV drama of the same name, this film knows it has a dumb premise, and uses that as comedy fuel. A police department that’s run out of original ideas (wink) decides to recycle an old idea by putting two youthful cops undercover in a local high school to break up a drug ring that’s targeting the kids. Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill play the cops, Schmidt and Jenko. Hill’s character still has some resentment over the way he was treated in high school, and Tatum’s character is surprised to find that in modern-day, upper-middle class schools, the jockish bully isn’t guaranteed instant popularity like they were in the ‘80s (or at least ‘80s teen movies.) It’s an irreverent comedy that keeps up the pace with quick laughs. “Wrath of the Titans” (PG-13) -- Just like its 2010 predecessor, “Clash of the Titans,”

this computer-generated myth movie has a lot of swords and not much of a script. Sam Worthington returns to the role of Perseus, the half-human son of Zeus (Liam Neeson.) Perseus is called back into action when Hades (Ralph Fiennes), Ares (Edgar Ramirez) and Kronos (a CG blob of talking lava) team up to kidnap Zeus and set loose the Titans -- the old gods who are somehow meaner than the ones on Olympus.

ARE YOU PROFITING FROM ABORTION?

t is estimated that on average 35 babies are killed each week by abortions performed at the Planned Parenthood facility here in Colorado Springs. Nationwide the number of innocent lives taken exceeds 3,300 a day. That is well over a million deaths a year. Last year Planned Parenthood nationwide was responsible for over 300,000 of those abortions and received nearly $350,000,000 in government – read taxpayer – funding. The culture of death has become big business. Unfortunately too many Christians, without even knowing it, are profiting from the business of abortion and contributing to organizations like Planned Parenthood. They are not doing so through their checkbooks, but it is being done on their behalf, stealthily, through their investments. I recently screened the holdings of the largest index mutual fund in America, the Vanguard 500 Index Fund. I knew what I was going to find but that did not make it any the less disheartening. Over 70% of the assets held in that fund are of compa-

nies involved in activities and industries that most Christians would find morally objectionable. There were lifestyle concerns, anti-family issues, companies that produced and distributed pornography and companies tied financially to the abortion industry. Over 28% of those companies were involved in the industry of death; either as a contributor to organizations like Planned Parenthood, or as a manufacturer of the morning after pill and contraceptives, or as a provider of abortions at for profit facilities and hospitals, or by involvement in embryonic stem cell research and experimentation, or by making abortion on demand part of their employee benefit package. All these companies have a financial stake in a culture that denies our unborn children their humanity – and so do their investors. Without even knowing it the owners of the Vanguard 500 Index Fund are supporting and profiting from abortion and are doing so in a very big way. The Vanguard 500 Index Fund does not stand alone. Sadly, when I have run the same moral screens on many other mutual funds I have found their investments too put Christian shareholders in a place of moral compromise. Though the percentages change from fund to fund, companies financially involved in the abortion indus-

tries are major profit centers for the vast majority of mutual funds. So how can we manage our investments and stay true to our pro-life values? Fortunately for the morally responsible investor there are a number of mutual fund companies that screen specifically for abortion and exclude all companies that have any financial interest in the industry. Fund companies like the Ave Maria Funds and the Timothy Plans have made life a core value in their portfolios. By moving Christ to the center of their investment portfolios, some mutual fund companies have found that you can do well by doing what is right. If you would like to find out more about these companies and others using moral screens, you can find links on my website at www.chuckmahercfp.com/
