began recruiting firefighters as the firehouses were like community centers with plenty of strong young men to pick from – firefighters themselves along with teenage boys who emulated and idolized them.
sembly line of filling and passing buckets of water. If in the middle of their workday, they would stop what they were doing and head out to fight the fire as if it were mandatory community service.
Rivalries between firehouses or companies fueled some riots and plenty of fistfights. Firefighters seemed to run amuck and were even known to fight fires while drinking alcohol.
Boston was the site of the first professional firefighting organization in 1678. The city was in possession of two fire engines and a dozen hired men.
All company rivalries aside, firefighters were still a collective unit due to the job they shared that was unique in the level of danger involved. They became a political force to be reckoned with in the larger cities. They could nominate and elect whoever they chose, and even staged job walkouts in the 1850s and 1860s.
New York saw two pumpers with a nozzle come to the Big Apple in 1731, but it took them until 1865 to establish a paid firefighting brigade. Other cities on the east coast such as Philadelphia jumped on the truck to establish volunteer corps. Benjamin Franklin started the first volunteer department in Philadelphia. “Payment” for these volunteers was in the form of fringe benefits such as jury service and militia duty exemptions.
A ‘GLAMOROUS’ JOB Around the time of the Civil War, the volunteer departments were being replaced more and more by paid professional firefighters. By the late 19th century, the firefighter was truly on duty and lived at the firehouse, sometimes with their families, nearly 24/7. They enjoyed only a day or two per month off duty. Even with the stress and demands of the job, firefighting was still a coveted profession. It offered job security, which attracted a large immigrant population who were also not deterred by hard work.

same day, it remains historically the fire that claimed the most lives in all of history. June 15, 1904 – the steamboat “General Slocum” was the site of a fire on the East River in New York, which killed just over 1,000 of the more than 1,300 passengers on board. This fire is considered the single largest fire event in New York history prior to the events of Sept. 11, 2001. 1906 – multiple fires set off by the San Francisco earthquake 1942 – the Coconut Grove nightclub in Boston, which killed almost 500 people 1958 – Our Lady of Angels School in Chicago, which claimed the lives of 92 teachers and children 1911 – the Triangle Shirtwaist fire took place in a garment factory in New York where 146 workers were killed
The silver linings in the dark clouds of these major fires were that significant regulations were put into place, e.g., automated sprinklers in schools, mandatory fire drills, fire codes and other workplace safety laws.
FIRST RESPONDERS After the devastating fires like the Triangle Shirtwaist, training for firefighters intensified and the role of firefighters evolved into rescue/emergency workers along with fighting fires. After the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, the intended attack on the Capital building and subsequent plane crash of United Airlines Flight 93, firefighters added hazardous materials training to their toolkits. According to the U.S. Fire Administration, a division of FEMA, about 100 firefight-

FRESH IN OUR MINDS Waldo Canyon, located 3 miles west of Colorado Springs, was on fire on June 23, 2012. Before it was considered 100 percent contained 17 days later on July 10, it destroyed 346 homes and killed two people on the west side of Colorado Springs when it erupted and raced down the foothills three days after it began. As of June 27, 32,000 people were evacuated from their homes and over 1,500 firefighters were working the fire. By the time the fire was contained, it had consumed 18,247 acres. The Waldo Canyon fire is considered the most destructive in Colorado history. If it weren’t for the firefighters on the scene, the destruction would have undoubtedly been unimaginable.

ANSWER: Men of any race can develop shaving bumps. Black men’s hair is more tightly coiled, and they, therefore, are quite susceptible to them. If a man cuts his facial hair too closely to the skin, it can spring back toward the skin and penetrate it. Tightly coiled hair is especially prone to this. The sharp end of the hair pushing back into the skin acts like a foreign body. It irritates the skin and inflames it. A little bump forms. It must be a chore for your boyfriend to shave. To get rid of the bumps, he has to stop shaving until they go away. He also has to dislodge all the hairs that have penetrated the skin. He can do this by taking a clean needle and slipping it under the loop that the hair makes. Then he pops the end of the hair out of the skin. When he frees all the ingrown hairs and stops shaving, his skin will clear. To prevent new bumps when he resumes shaving, he has to adopt a different shaving style. He must soften his beard with soap and warm water before using a razor. He will do himself a favor by buying an electric razor and putting it on a setting that doesn’t shave the beard too closely. With either a blade or an electric shaver, he should shave in the

TAI CHI BENEFITS
I
n a new study, researchers discovered that seniors who engage in tai chi, the gentle Chinese exercise, experienced an increase in brain size and improvements in cognition. The research was done in a controlled trial, which means that the participants were carefully monitored. The group attended tai chi classes three times a week, as well as a social discussion afterward. The results showed an increase in brain function, as well as improved results on memory and thinking tests. It’s thought that the gentle movements of tai chi, as well as the social interaction, was able to reverse the gradual loss of nerve cells in the brain that leads to dementia.
Arthritis: Seniors with knee osteoarthritis improved physical function after learning tai chi, and experienced less pain. Participants took a 60-minute class that included instruction in breathing and relaxation, twice a week for three months. A control group received only diet instruction and did stretching exercises. At the end of the three months, those who took the tai chi classes experienced “a significant decrease in knee pain.” According to the research. 4.3 million seniors have knee osteoarthritis.

THE STRANGER By Nick Yanez
A
couple of months ago a gentleman by the name of Fredrick Tupple was walking down an alleyway. This was no normal alleyway, but rather, one made of trees and flowers. Fredrick, you see, lived in the middle of the woods. He would gather logs for his fireplace every Tuesday afternoon; the current task he was embarking on. As he selected his wooden chips he across another woodmen. It was at that moment Fredrick realized, if he were to find the perfect log that day, it would come with a little competition. He and his new rival paced along the hills of the mountain, collecting logs faster than the other. They would barrel their pile home before heading back for more. Hours upon hours Fredrick and his new nemesis would try to collect as many logs as humanly possible.

As the evening shade began to overwhelm the forest Fredrick stopped for a moment. He looked around his home and realized he had collected more logs than ever before. The amount could go on to last him all winter. He realized it was the stranger who and led him to do this. So the next day, Fredrick Tupple searched through the woods for the man who challenged him. When he finally found him, he learned his name was Guy Jones. Guy too had collected more wood than ever before. Guy also contained a substance Frederick had never heard of before; it was honey. Guy had never heard of potato chips before. Frederick and Guy

never quite became friends, but they traded honey and chips for the rest of their natural born lives. Because of very real and inspiring stories like the one of Fredrick and Guy, Pinz Bowling Center is starting a new Saturday Night League called ‘Taking Care of Business’. It’s a League where Tri-Lakes Area local business’ will form bowling teams. The teams will compete for top prizes, and the first place team will also receive the GRAND PRIZE – a free company party at Pinz! You see, Pinz believes in the power of networking, associating with others, and having a blast while doing it. Taking care of Business will meet every Saturday night at 6:30pm, starting July 21st. There will be a mandatory meeting at 6:00pm the first week, and the League will continue for 20weeks of play. It’s important to know your competition. If Fredrick had not known his, he would have never eaten honey. Now, I don’t know you personally, but I know you probably like honey. Honey is delicious! It’s the only reason we really put up with bees. Can you imagine if you never had honey? Can you imagine if you’d never tasted the sweet and savory sauce? What you can’t possibly imagine, is where you and your business could be today after meeting the right stranger. New DVD Releases for Week of July 16, 2012 PICKS OF THE WEEK
“Salmon Fishing in the Yemen” (PG13) -- This quaint and uplifting romantic comedy swims upstream against overplotting and lands safely in the waters of happy endings and charming interpersonal chemistry. The two lovely people caught in a peculiar situation are Alfred (Ewan McGregor), a British fisheries expert, and Harriet (Emily Blunt), a representative for a sheik who wants to bring fly fishing to the Middle East. A hilariously snippy UK
press secretary (Kristin Scott Thomas) decides it would make a nice news story to indulge the ludicrous idea of introducing Scottish fish to a desert stream. The movie gets bogged down in the middle, when the obstacles to romance have to be addressed (Alfred’s cold wife, Harriet’s boyfriend, terrorists). However, the performances from Blunt and McGregor hit the romcom bullseye, keeping things breezy and fun. “Casa de Mi Padre” (R) -- It must have been a fun idea to work with: Will Ferrell with a straight face playing the hero in a Mexican gangster melodrama. The result has a limited appeal. Even for people who “get it,” the schtick can only hold up for so long. Fans of Ferrell in “Anchorman” will be disappointed that this movie doesn’t have the same rapid-fire one-liners. Ferrell plays Armando, a simple, kind man who works on his father’s ranch. His broth-
er Raul (Diego Luna) returns to the family estate to introduce his fiancee (Genesis Rodriguez) and fix the family’s financial struggles. Trouble starts immediately when Armando falls in love with Raul’s fiance, and Raul turns out to be a drug dealer who has made a powerful enemy (Gael Garcia Bernal). The magic here is that everyone seems down with the absurdity. “Friends With Kids” (R) -- Two platonic friends Jason (Adam Scott) and Julie (Jennifer Westfeldt) both want children, but they aren’t in love. They are blessed with an idea -- conceive a child together, then raise it as two unmarried co-parents, free to find their own loves. Naturally, Jason and Julie’s married friends despise this little plot, which mirrors my feelings about the whole movie. The people involved are great; I just wish it wasn’t such a lame idea that brought them together. There are some laughs and a few authentic moments, but
12
the trite plot device and sitcommy shine on everything make it hard to care. “Get the Gringo” (R) -- Mel Gibson plays a gravel-voiced tough guy who lands himself in a Mexican prison. As a gritty action hero, Gibson carries an odd sense of humor and a festering rage under a cracking facade. It’s very fitting. The movie is simultaneously grim and flippant, mean and nice. Rent this one out if you need a pulp action with plenty of one-liners and gun-toting baddies hunting a flawed protagonist.

VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Your rigidity regarding a difficult workplace situation could be the reason your colleagues aren’t rushing to your assistance. Try being more flexible in your demands.
13
SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A sudden spate of criticism could shake the Scorpion’s usually high sense of self-confidence. Best advice: You made a decision you believed in -- now defend it. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Your reluctance to help restart a stalled relationship could be traced to unresolved doubts about your partner’s honesty. Rely on a trusted friend’s advice. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) The capricious Sea Goat is torn between duty and diversion. Best advice: Do both. Tend to your workaday chores, then go out and enjoy your well-earned fun time. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Cutting back on some of your activities for a few days helps restore your energy levels. You should be feeling ready to tackle your many projects early next week. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A coworker might be secretly carping about your work to mutual colleagues. But associates will come to your defense, and the situation will ultimately work to your advantage. BORN THIS WEEK: Your ambition makes you a success at whatever you choose to do -- especially if it’s in the world of the performing arts.

Series 9, Article 1
It’s a great time of year to give yourself a Make-over! The weather is warm so you’re wearing less clothes. You’ve got a little glow of a tan on your cheeks. And this is the time of year for vacations, weddings, visiting family and hanging with friends. What a wonderful time to look your best! Here are some websites that can give you ideas and help you on your quest. Want to try a new Hairstyle before you do the "actual haircut"? You can also try different styles of makeup! Use either one of these websites to download your photo and then just get creative! www.dailymakeover.com/ virtual-makeover www.thehairstyler.com/ virtual-hairstyler Do you ever look at girls on TV and wish you knew how to put on your make-up like they do? You KNOW they don’t look like that all the time.... which lends me to believe that I could actually pull off that look too! Go to: http://www.maybelline.com/ lessons-explorer On this Maybelline website they will walk you through step-by-step instructions for any make-up look you want: Relaxed, Sexy, Edgy, Daring, Glamorous, Flirty. For any occassion you may have: Work, Holiday, Wedding, Night Out, Daytime, Weekend. For anything you want to make up: Face, Eyes, Lips, Nails. It’s Sooooo Fun!!!!!
Call for appointment • FREE initial consultation
www.lorealparisusa.com is also a great website that will give you make-up suggestions based on your eye, hair and skin colors, and the image you want to protray. Find out what make-up colors are best for your natural color palette. Go to www.ehow.com/fashion-and-style/ and type “wardrobe” into the search box. You can learn to stretch your wardrobe mixing and matching, or learn to buy a women’s business suit, learn how to select clothing colors that complement silver hair & light eyes, or learn what shoes to wear if you have thick ankles. www.polyvore.com/cgi/app has got to be my all time favorite clothing idea website! This is going to blow your mind! Click on SHOP at the top of the page and then click on any category of clothing you would like to explore. You will find hundreds of styles in each category. This is a great website to go to when you want to find a new style for yourself. Or if you are going to an event and you have no idea what you want to wear. And the fun thing about this site is that under each piece of clothing, it gives you the price and the website where you can order the item! www.stardoll.com/en is a wonderful website for young girls to learn style, hair and make-up. They simply choose a doll and then click and drag outfits and accessories to her to dress her up. This is a great way for any young girl to learn to coordinate outfits!

LIVING GOD’S GIFTS
out over 30 years. There’s a much better way to cut the amount the interest you pay.
bringing Christ into your financial life
What if you send the mortgage company $25 extra per month? Your interest, at the 3.71 rate, drops to $59,207 and you cut a year and a half off your mortgage.
HOW TO CUT MORTGAGE INTEREST PAYMENTS
Let’s increase that to $100 extra per month. Your interest, at the 3.71 rate, will drop to $45,583 and you’ll shave approximately eight years off the life of your 30-year note.
he average interest rate for home mortgages recently fell to a 30year record low. According to Freddie Mac, the rate for a 30-year loan went to 3.66 percent from a previous 3.71 percent.
If the idea of paying off your mortgage early appeals to you, let’s increase that extra amount per month to $200 and look at the figures. The interest over the life of the loan drops to $35,042, and you pay off the loan 12 years early.
Many potential homebuyers look at that drop in the interest rate and consider it significant. But look at the figures: A $100,000 loan at 3.71 percent will cost you $460.85 per month in payments. A $100,000 loan at 3.66 percent will cost you $458.02 per month in payments.
That, not in the tiny drops in interest rate, is where you’ll see your greatest savings.
T
That’s a savings of only $2 per month ... unless you calculate the savings over the life of the loan. At 3.71 percent, that $100,000 loan will cost you $65,905 in interest alone, which means you’ll pay $165,905 over the 30-year course of the loan. At 3.66 percent that $100,000 loan will cost you $64,888 in interest alone, and you’ll pay $164,888 over the thirty years. That’s a savings of just $1,017 spread

If you’re ready to buy, don’t quibble about small changes in the interest rate. Do your homework: Get your credit in good shape, assemble your documents (such as tax returns and bank statements) and when it comes to buying, spend less than you’ve been approved for. Send those extra dollars in with your payment each month and watch your balance drop.
