y order of General George Washington from Newburgh, NY on Aug. 7, 1782, the original Purple Heart, called the Badge of Military Merit, was established. The heart was made of purple cloth outlined in a silver braid and designated to adorn the left breast area of the military uniform. Only three people were awarded the Badge of Military Merit when ďŹ rst established: Sgt. Elijah Churchill, 2nd Continental Dragoons; Sgt. William Brown, 5th; and Sgt. the War of the Revolution is hereby revived out of respect to his memory and military achievements. By order of the Secretary of War: Douglas MacArthur General, Chief of Staff”

he felt strongly about awarding troops for “unusual gallantry” and “extraordinary fidelity and essential service.” Washington especially wanted to honor enlisted men for their meritorious actions. His Aug. 7, 1782 orders stated:

CRITERIA

Washington’s original version of the Purple Heart was awarded for merit; sustaining a wound in wartime was not a necessary criterion for receiving the award as it is now. Also, the Purple Heart was not awarded posthumously to anyone prior to 1942 when President Franklin Roosevelt signed the executive order that released the Heart to any military member killed on or after Dec. 7, 1942. The executive order also allowed the Navy to award the Purple Heart to Marines, Coast Guard and Sailors, which before then was only awarded to members of the U.S. Army or Army Air Corps. In the same year, the Legion of Merit award was created, giving an award solely on the basis of meritorious service. The Purple Heart became an award given only for sustaining a wound, dying during combat or after receiving a combat wound.

“... The General ever desirous to cherish virtuous ambition in his soldiers, as well as to foster and encourage every species of Military merit directs whenever any singularly meritorious action is performed, the author of it shall be permitted to wear on his facings, over his left breast, the figure of a heart in purple cloth or silk edged with narrow lace or binding.” According to his order, the names of all recipients were to be kept in what’s called a “Book of Merit.” No such book has ever been found.

FAST FORWARD TO THE 20TH CENTURY

Although the Badge of Military Merit never went away, it was not used again until 1932 when it was resurrected in honor of George Washington and in celebration of the 200th anniversary of his birth.

Today, the Purple Heart is awarded in the name of the President of the United States to any member of the Armed Forces serving in any capacity who meets the above criteria.

General Order No. 3 states: “...By order of the President of the United States, the Purple Heart, established by General George Washington at Newburgh, August 7, 1782, during

The MOPH receives most of its funding through grants and its own fundraising activities that include operating thrift stores and a vehicle donation program. If you’ve ever seen the little viola flower from time to time used for fundraising, that is the official flower of the organization and is assembled by disabled and/or needy vets. MOPH programs vary, but mainly center around assisting wounded veterans obtain VA benefits and may involve legal aid. They also provide clothing and personal items to vets in need and maintain a presence on Capitol Hill in order to voice its opinion as to legislation concerning veterans. They award scholarships to Purple Heart recipients, their spouses, children and grandchildren. MOPH volunteers also go out into the community, especially classrooms to speak to citizens and raise awareness about the veteran experience. The organization has a Ladies’ Auxiliary of the Military Order comprised of wives, mothers, daughters and stepdaughters of Purple Heart recipients. This arm of the MOPH has a significant presence in VA hospitals around the country.

SOME CIVILIAN AWARD RECIPIENTS

For 55 years during the period from 1942 to 1997, about 100 civilians received the Purple Heart – those who were injured during war time, such as Red Cross workers, war correspondents and government/ civil service employees. During the terrorist attacks on the Khobar Towers in Saudi Arabia in 1996, 40 civil service employees were injured and subsequently received Purple Hearts. Ernie Pyle, a newspaper

In 1997, Congress passed legislation prohibiting awarding the Purple Heart to civilians, restricting it to members of the armed forces only. The Secretary of Defense Medal for the Defense of Freedom was established on Sept. 27, 2001 after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. ast week we talked about the top ten etiquette rules for email. This week we’ll take it a step further and talk about common sense rules of email etiquette.

1. Read the email before you send it. A lot of people don’t bother to read an email before they send it out, as can be seen from the many spelling and grammar mistakes contained in emails. Apart from this, reading your email through the eyes of the recipient will help you send a more effective message and avoid misunderstandings and inappropriate comments. One sender consistently sends email messages with “reverse all caps. Not paying attention to the caps-lock button on the keyboard, the sender’s emails end up with the initial letter of a sentence in lower case and the remainder of the sentence in upper case.

allow you to sample our varied & delicious menus. Live music at each venue will make this an enjoyable afternoon for everyone.

2. Do not overuse Reply to All Only use Reply to All if you really need your message to be seen by each person who received the original message.

8. Do not ask to recall a message. Biggest chances are that your message has already been delivered and read. A recall request would look very silly in that case. It is better to send an email saying that you made a mistake. This will look much more honest than trying to recall a message. 3. Sending to multiple recipients. When sending an email mailing, some people place all the email addresses in the To: field. Using this practice lets the recipients know you have sent the same message to a large number of people as well as publicizing someone else’s email address without their permission. One way to get round this is to place all addresses in the Bcc: field.

emoticons. Particularly with business emails, try not to use abbreviations such as BTW (by the way) and LOL (laugh out loud). The recipient might not be aware of the meanings of the abbreviations and in business emails these are generally not appropriate. The same goes for emoticons, such as the smiley :-). If you are not sure whether your recipient knows what it means, it is better not to use it.

ar too many of us, women especially, can develop weight problems as we age. We’re less active. Menopause doesn’t help. We might have different eating patterns.

We are a federally designated debt relief agency pursuant to Title 11 of the U.S. Code, to help people file bankruptcy

Researchers at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center have done a study that looked at self-monitoring as a way to reduce weight. The study results show how we can lose weight safely in three steps: 1) Keep a journal that reports everything that’s eaten; 2) Don’t skip meals; and 3) Don’t go out to lunch. Sounds so simple, doesn’t it.

YOU’RE ONLY AS ENERGY EFFICIENT AS YOUR OLDEST APPLIANCE.

They divided 123 overweight and obese senior women into two groups for the yearlong study: one group used diet and exercise, and the other only diet.

Women who kept journals of what they ate lost six pounds more than those who didn’t keep a journal. This appeared to be the most important of the three steps, and it makes sense. If we write down exactly what we eat, it’s easier to identify whether we’re meeting our goals. The trick is to be honest, and being honest means measuring portions and reading labels -- and always keeping your journal with you in case you do eat while away from home. Women who went out for lunch at least once a week lost five pounds less than those who didn’t, or who ate lunch out less frequently. When you eat at a restaurant, you can’t control the size of the portions or how the food is cooked. Women who skipped meals lost eight pounds less than those who didn’t skip meals. Researchers weren’t sure why this was so, but it could be that being hungry leads to overeating or eating out. Eating at regular times gave the best success. Matilda Charles regrets that she cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into her column whenever possible. Write to her in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. DASH TO LOWER BLOOD PRESSURE DEAR DR. DONOHUE: You’ve written about the DASH diet in the past. The directions for it are quite general. Can you provide an itemized list of what is good and what is bad to eat? It makes things simpler for me. -- F.L. ANSWER: The DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) doesn’t involve a detailed listing of good and bad foods. It’s a general approach that identifies the food groups that are best for lowering blood pressure. You get to pick foods from those groups that appeal to you. That’s one of the beauties of the diet: It permits many choices. Grains are one of the major groups in the diet. Grains include products made from wheat, barley, rye, oats and other such cereal grains, even grains that aren’t familiar to our diet. Every day, people should eat seven to eight servings of grain foods. A serving is a slice of bread, 1 ounce of cereal, or half a cup of cooked rice (brown), pasta or cereal. The next group is three to four servings of fruit, with a serving being equal to a medium-size fruit, a quarter-cup of dried fruit or 6 ounces of fruit juice. People also should eat four or five servings of vegetables a day, with a serving being 1 cup leafy vegetables, half a cup cooked vegetables or 6 ounces of vegetable juice. Two to three low-fat dairy products are allowed, with 8 ounces of skim milk, 1 cup low-fat yogurt or 1 1/2 ounces of low-fat cheese constituting a serving. Two meat servings a day are permitted, with 3 ounces being a serving of cooked

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Six months ago my husband, 78, had an artificial hip installed -- if that’s the right word. The operation was a complete success, and he was up and walking shortly after the surgery. However, since he’s been home, he does nothing but sit. He says he’s afraid he’ll wear out the new hip. t’s time to plant your fall vegetable garden! You might be too busy harvesting bushels of corn, tomatoes and squash at this point to think about planting, but if you do now you can be enjoying fresh salads from your garden clear into the fall. Longer than that if you have a cold frame! Now is a good time to plant Spinach, Radishes, Kale or Lettuce. There are a number of interesting salad greens that love this time of year; Arugula, Radicchio, or Mustard greens to name a few. How much you will harvest depends on weather, when you plant and whether or not you have a cold frame. Choose varieties that will be ready to harvest in the least amount of days.

If you decide you want a cold frame and you are creative than you might be able to make one with things you already have around your home! You just need something to keep heat in as well as let light in; clear polyethylene plastic is often used but you could also use Plexiglas or an old window. And you need something to use as your frame because you don’t want your plastic to touch your plants! Poly plastic attached to PVC pipe can be built above your raised beds. Or an old window could be placed on a stack of bricks! And if you were really being creative you could insulate it with some foam board and a string of holiday lights!

IMPROVE YOUR HOME’S APPEAL WITH A FRESH SEAL!

Because our growing season is so short, having a cold frame is a must for anyone who enjoys growing their own vegetables. A cold frame can lengthen your growing season by several weeks and even months. It protects your plants from light frosts, and drying winds in fall and early spring. Just be sure to leave it open on warm sunny days, it can get too hot very fast if you leave it closed, and close the lid in the late afternoon to trap the heat for the cold nights. Then stock up on your salad recipes and enjoy!

MOMENTS IN TIME THE HISTORY CHANNEL

• On Aug. 16, 1896, George Carmack spots nuggets of gold in a creek bed near the Klondike River in Canada’s Yukon Territory. His lucky discovery sparks the last great gold rush in the American West. Over the next two years, as many as 50,000 would-be miners arrived in the region. • On Aug. 17, 1915, Charles F. Kettering is issued a patent for his “engine-starting deviceâ€? -- the first electric ignition for automobiles. In the early years, drivers used hand cranks to start the internal combustion process that powered car engines. • On Aug. 14, 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signs into law the Social Security Act. Although it was initially created to combat unemployment during the Great Depression, Social Security now functions primarily as a safety net for retirees and the disabled. • On Aug. 18, 1940, Walter Percy Chrysler, the founder of the American automotive corporation that bears his name, dies in New

York. Aside from automobiles, Chrysler was known for financing the 77-story Art Deco Chrysler Building skyscraper in midtown Manhattan. When completed in 1930, it was the tallest building in the world and the first manmade structure to top 1,000 feet. • On Aug. 19, 1953, the Iranian military, with the assistance of the United States government, overthrows the government of Premier Mohammed Mosaddeq and reinstates the Shah of Iran. As thanks for the help, the Shah signed over 40 percent of Iran’s oil fields to U.S. companies. However, the Shah was toppled from power in 1979. • On Aug. 13, 1961, East German soldiers begin building a wall between Soviet-controlled East Berlin and the democratic western section of the city. Berlin residents found themselves cut off from friends or family until the wall was dismantled in 1989. • On Aug. 15, 1983, Hurricane Alicia forms south of Louisiana in the Gulf of Mexico. Three days later, the Texas Gulf Coast is slammed by the storm, causing 21 deaths. The $2 billion in damages recorded was a record for hurricane damage in Texas at the time. GO NUTS FOR COCONUT OIL

V

irgin coconut oil is often called “low-fat fat.” Although coconut oil is a saturated fat, it’s lower in calories. It also breaks down to become energy and doesn’t get stored in the body like other fats. It has a pleasant, slightly sweet taste and blends well with a variety of foods. Three to five tablespoons of coconut oil a day are recommended for best results. Coconut oil has a long shelf life and doesn’t have to be kept refrigerated (unless you prefer to use it in a solid state for combining with other ingredients), so buying coconut oil in bulk from online stores like Vitacost. com will save you a lot of money. Because you can use coconut oil in so many ways, buying in bulk also is the easiest way to keep this wonderful product on hand. I not only use it on my hair and skin, it’s also become a kitchen staple. Here are some suggestions on ways you can easily incorporate coconut oil into your daily diet: --Add 1 to 2 tablespoons of coconut oil to smoothies, protein powders or yogurt; --Add a tablespoon to hot or cold cereal; --Use coconut oil as a sugar or creamer replacement for either tea or coffee that’s cool enough to drink. Stir often to combine the oil with the liquid. --Coconut oil is a healthy cooking oil, especially for low- to medium-heat cooking and sauteing as it doesn’t break down easily. Add 1 to 3 tablespoons to your pan and cook eggs, vegetables, rice and grain dishes, potatoes, curries, soups, stews and meats. --Spread some coconut oil on slices of bread, rolls, bagels or crackers. --Make compound “butters” and flavored spreads with solid coconut oil. Blend 2 to 3 tablespoons of coconut oil with nut butters, cream cheese or fruit spreads. Also try adding some cinnamon and honey to coconut oil to make a spread. --Combine liquid coconut oil with herbs and spices to create a healthy dressing for salads.

BABA GHANOUSH My version of baba ghanoush has added flavor and health benefits with the addition of coconut oil. This savory eggplant puree is flavored with tahini, lemon juice and fresh herbs. Eat it with wedges of wholewheat pita bread for dipping, or spoon it over roasted meats and vegetables. 1 large eggplant (about 1 pound), halved lengthwise 1 1/2 teaspoons sea salt, divided 3 tablespoons sesame tahini 1 to 2 cloves garlic, finely chopped 2 tablespoons nonfat plain Greek yogurt 1/2 cup parsley leaves, chopped, plus more for garnish 1/4 cup lemon juice 2 tablespoons coconut oil, plus 1 tablespoon more for garnish 1. Preheat oven to 350 F. Sprinkle eggplant with 1/2 teaspoon salt. Place eggplant cutside down on a foil-lined baking sheet. Prick all over with a fork and bake until soft and collapsed, about 20 minutes. 2. When cool enough to handle, scoop eggplant pulp into a bowl and discard skin. Add remaining teaspoon of salt, the tahini, garlic, yogurt, parsley, lemon juice and the coconut oil. Mash for a chunky texture or puree in a blender (before adding parsley) for a smooth texture. 3. Garnish with parsley and drizzle with coconut oil. Serve with warm pita bread or crackers. New DVD Releases for Week of August 13, 2012 PICKS OF THE WEEK

“Hunger Games” (PG-13) -- For those new to this, Hunger Gaming involves putting children into an arena full of weapons and traps, then making them fight to the death. It’s the dystopian future, you see, and the ruling district demands that each of the outlying districts give up one boy and one girl to the Hunger Games. Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) is a 16-year-old girl who happens to be an expert archer thanks to her hunting experience.

For an action-centric adaptation, it fumbles with the action but does a good job with the chemistry between Katniss and Peeta, her tribute. It’s an odd kind of tension between two teenagers who realize that only one of them can survive, and it works. “The Raid” (R) -- Their cover blown, a handful of police are trapped in a slum high rise teeming with thugs, goons and lowlifes readying themselves for war. It’s up to a rookie on the SWAT team to use every ounce of strength to rescue his comrades and complete the mission. This Indonesian import is a towering inferno of action. If Karate and Kung Fu no longer do it for you, Indonesia has its own traditional martial art. It’s called Pencak Silat, and it looks awesome on a movie screen. “Tonight You’re Mine” (R) -- This romantic comedy is horribly contrived at the start, but becomes charming over time. A scuffle backstage at Scotland’s biggest mu-

sic festival ends with two preening rockers handcuffed together. Wouldn’t ya know it, they start out hating the situation, and end up falling in love. If you can handle the silly plot mechanism -- and all of the dirty music festival people -- you have a chance at enjoying this movie.

caine-addicted young lady (Blake Lively.) From there, Luli just keeps running into the same people and in worsening circumstances. We don’t get any true glimpse into her character or anything meaningful. Just oodles of creepiness.

DOG OF THE WEEK

“Dexter: The Sixth Season”

“Hick” (R) -- By all accounts, this should have been a really good movie. The director, Derick Martini, showed hints of skill in his last movie (“Lymelife”), the cast is good, and the script was written by the author of the book that was being adapted. Alas, “Hick” is tough to watch and doesn’t have much payoff. Luli (Chloe Moretz) is all of 13 years old when she leaves her drunkard parents with nothing but some cash and a handgun in her purse. She meets a creepy cowboy named Eddie (Eddie Redmayne) and a vapid co-

Top Dating Websites

• Computer Repair & Troubleshooting

Series 11, Article 1

Online dating sites have revolutionized the way singles meet. The chances that a "friend of a friend" is going to be your perfect match is highly unlikely….although it happens. Online dating is a way to easily search for the people that fit your core values and beliefs, likes and dislikes, religion, political views, interests, etc. Here are some of the top dating websites being used.

OurTime.com is a fantastic place for serious single daters over 50! Search by age, location or physique, or do a keyword custom search, look at photos or video profiles.

Zoosk.com is a fun and easygoing online dating site. Receive daily matches based on a Zoosk algorithm. Zoosk is a global dating website that takes advantage of the popularity of social media sites. Zoosk easily integrates with Face Book, MySpace, Bebo, and mobile phones, making the dating scene a community experience. Search by age, location, height, ethnicity, and more with a custom search.

ChristianMingle.com was created for the lively Community of Devoted Christian Singles. This site is for Christians seeking singles with similar values. Search by age, location, physical appearance, lifestyle; custom search; match search; hot list; photo.

Match.com started in 1995. It offers the most matches and best search tools. Search by age, location, etc. or put in a keyword custom search. It is easy to navigate and provides you with all the tools you need to find a date through a website. Subscription prices are comparable to other dating websites. Chemistry.com is a sister site of match.com but works completely differently. It uses a patented Personality Profile (as featured on 20/20 and Good Morning America) to create matches for customers based on the results of their questionnaire. Registration takes longer than on most dating websites, but the Personality Profile gives interesting feedback. Costs are slightly higher than most others. Date.com is free to join for adults looking for relationships. It started in 1997 and is another sister site to match.com. The majority of users on the site are college educated professionals in large cities or near the suburbs. The site is welcoming and easy to use. eHarmony.com is for people seeking committed, serious relationships. You are not able to search for matches on this site. Matches are based on personality test, a detailed questionnaire that you initially fill out, and the patented Compatibility Matching System. They then manage controlled contact until both customers are ready to contact each other. The focus is on long term relationships.
