re you a muggle? A muggle is slang describing one who has no familiarity with geocaching – a term borrowed from the “Harry Potter” series that refers to muggles as mere mortal beings. For us muggles, geocaching is the modern day version of a treasure hunt. Hunters use GPS systems and coordinates to find hidden treasures all over the world. The most important thing is not the treasure itself but the path to get to it. In other words, the fun is in the hunt. Nearly every country on earth as well as the international space station contain nearly 2 million caches to be found by about 4 million people actively participating in the treasure hunt. That means just about everywhere you go on earth, you are likely to find a hidden treasure.

PUZZLES, TRIVIA,
It all started on May 2, 2000 when the government stopped selective availability of GPS technology. In a nutshell, this act released the full force of the technology for commercial use and made GPS 10 times more accurate than it had been in the past. This technology not only saved many a marriage previously in danger due to directionally impaired spouses, but it also was the birth of an idea. The very next day, computer consultant David Ulmer decided to test the latest GPS enhancements.

GREAT BARGAINS Find Your Treasure! Business / Employment Opportunities
Some participants didn’t really care for the term “stash” as it conjures up visions of drug busts. So along came Jeremy Irish who coined the term “geocache.” More about him later. Geo stands for the Earth, giving it a global presence. Cache is a French word meaning a hiding place to store items temporarily. Cache is also used in technology as in “memory cache,” a place for storing information. Hence, the term geocache pulls together the global nature of the game along with hiding places and the use of technology or websites to store information about each cache.

Ulmer decided to hide a box of items in a woodsy location near Beavercreek, Oregon. He took a black bucket, inserted a logbook and pencil along with a slingshot, books, software and some videos. He posted the coordinates on an Internet GPS users’ group site. He called it the “Great American GPS Stash Hunt,” quickly shortened to “GPS Stash Hunt,” and noted one and only rule: “Take some stuff, leave some stuff.”

GPS technology and a treasure hunt – why didn’t we think of that? Good thing Jeremy Irish did. He is a web developer from Seattle who stumbled upon Teague’s website, purchased a GPS and took off on his first hunt. After that, geocaching.com was born. His site launched on Sept. 2, 2000 with 75
It only took three days for two people to find it and post their report online. Others followed and began stashing treasures of their own. The first successful hunter in the game, Mike Teague, began documenting the treasure hunters’ entries on a per-

cache sites listed. Techie magazines and notable publications like “The New York Times” got wind of the game and once publicized, it spread like wildfire. Regular folks like you and me wondered if they buried a cache, would anyone care. The mantra of this new gaming community became “if you hide it, they will come.” Indeed they did – by the millions.
A TREASURE TROVE? A cache typically consists of some type of waterproof container with a log book and a pen or pencil, as well anything imaginable that’s legal – small toys, CD’s, buttons, coins, books. The list is endless. The log book and writing utensil must stay in the vessel so that each visitor can log their visit and any other pertinent information about their exploits. But a geocacher can take anything else found in the cache as long as they leave something else of equal or greater value. Other items called travel bugs or geocoins are items referred to as “hitchhikers” that a

The game is often enhanced with the use of these and goals assigned, i.e., to make it to a certain country or a specific distance from its place of origin.
IT CAN GET COMPLICATED If it’s too easy, it’s hardly worth it, right? Some caches are quite the challenge and can be sitting atop mountain peaks, in the Antarctica, under water or up a tree. Some variations on the geocaching theme (see geochaching.com for more details about these challenges and many others): • Traditional/Basic – a one-stop-shop for cache seekers and will always include a log book. • Multi-cache – multiple caches that give the coordinates for the next cache; the final cache contains the log book. • Mystery/Puzzle – the player must solve a puzzle to find the cache; clues may be misleading; some have to be sought at night. • Travelling Cache – the cache finder moves the cache to a different location. • Virtual – coordinates for a certain location will not contain an actual box or log book but some other type of object. • Event Cache – events that are put on by and for fellow geocachers where caches are hidden at the event locations.
3 SIMPLE RULES Geocaching.com states the three rules in the game of geocaching: 1. If you take something from a cache, leave something of equal or greater value. 2. Write about your find in the cache log book. 3. Log your experience at www.geocaching.com.

found and logged a cache, which was more than double the amount on Leap Day in 2008. Before this record-breaking day, the record to beat was 78,313 caches logged on the 10-year anniversary of geocaching – Oct. 10, 2010.
CONTROVERSY… AS ONE CAN IMAGINE
COME GIVE IT A TASTE!
Think about little boxes of “stuff” all over the world along with folks calling in bomb squads to check them out. Geocachers generally abide by a code of ethics and agree to not endanger others and respect the private property of others, not to mention avoiding hiding suspicious looking boxes near public buildings. There are always exceptions and many a cache has been destroyed by a bomb squad.

Geocaching is not illegal and not frowned upon by government officials when they are given sufficient notice of cache existence. The state of South Carolina, however, did pass a bill outlawing places like historical sites and cemeteries as geocaching locations.

GET YOUR CACHE ON If you’re interested in geocaching and find that reading some of the more technical publications makes your eyes glaze over, take heart. There are a few websites, most notably geocaching.com that make the process fun and easy to navigate. A simple search for caches within 100 miles of the 80132 zip code (Monument) brings up 18,568 caches. One only needs to register on the website, activate their GPS and get caching!

et’s not be coy here, winter is coming sooner than we all want. As summer slows and the September wind looms, all we can hope is that the snow comes later than sooner. But if the white downfall does come and the sub-zero temperatures consume our neighborhoods, it’s best to have a plan. What I am suggesting will require a commitment; it will be a permanent change in activity, which will force you to make time and save energy for the task at hand. We could use an alternative plan, but that would be silly. Starting a community plow-club, where citizens all take turns in plowing the neighborhood each time it snows, would be too difďŹ cult to order, and require too many families to purchase plow. There was also the eeting thought that we could create an elaborate underground tunnel system, so when the cold white akes bury our homes, we have a warm and dry transportation system ready to use. Of course such a scheme would require a city permit, as well as a lot of digging. Personally, I helped put in a water line on my Father-in-laws ranch last year and haven’t really been in the mood to dig holes since.
See, what I’m proposing is sensible; it’s simple. I suggest we deal with it. That’s right, we do nothing. Snow is snow, we can’t stop it and we’ve handled it for years. But what we can do is make the winter more enjoyable. The most efďŹ cient way of doing this is by joining Pinz’ Wednesday Winter Mixed Bowling League. Four-person mixed adult teams will compete every Wednesday starting this fall. This gives plenty of time to settle into the League before winter kicks in. By bowling on Wednesday’s, you’ll practically forget the cold has even come. It’s warm inside of Pinz, after all. There’s also plenty of fresh pizza and beer to wash down any shivers you may get on the way in.
1. Who gets the armrest? Frequent travelers, flight attendants and etiquette experts weigh in differently. Some say that the person in the middle seat should get both armrests as the travelers in the other two seats have one each they do not have to share with anyone else. Others say it is important to share throughout the duration of the flight.
League sign-ups are happening NOW, so hurry up and get your name on the list, as this opportunity starts September 5th! You can come in the center (855 HWY 105 Palmer Lake, CO 80133), or call (487-7469) to sign up! Tell your friends and tell your family, because joining Pinz’ Wednesday League is as important as starting ďŹ res (inside of a ďŹ replace, of course) this winter. For now, enjoy the heat while you can. The cold nights are coming friends, as quickly as the 5th day of September; a day when you ďŹ nally do something about the snow – ignore it and bowl.
2. Space encroachment You sit in your seat and the seven-foottall stranger you hope is sitting several rows behind you, indicates he is your neighbor for your five-hour flight. As he sits down, his knees jut out wide, encroaching on your space. Again, opinions differ significantly. If the number one rule of etiquette is to do your best to make those around you feel more comfortable and at ease, how can you begrudge the man space to put his legs? On the other hand, you have paid for your seat, armrest to armrest and are entitled to the room to stretch your legs as well. Perhaps a gentle mention of your stiff legs will prompt him to stretch his legs out in the aisle for a bit, although that

4. Restless (loud, obnoxious) children. One would assume that asking the offending child’s parents to do their best to get the behavior under control should do the trick. Surprisingly, this doesn’t always yield the expected results. On one recent trip, I overheard the flight attendant (mid-flight) tell the parents (after a third request for intervention), that it would be a shame if she had to put the kids off the plane. The chuckles overheard by nearby passengers resulted in the parents paying more attention than they had previously.

3. Excusing yourself when the person next to the aisle in sound asleep. What to do? Try your best to climb over them and not wake them? And if they wake while you are attempting your climb, you risk a very awkward moment indeed and the potential of startling them. In general, the need to excuse yourself is a fact of life. We all do our best to put it off as long as possible when sitting next to a sleeping stranger. However, a simple tap on the shoulder and request to leave your seat is all that should be necessary. Most people understand regardless of their need for sleep.

If you happen to be a frequent flyer in economy class, you may find yourself subjected to never-ending inconveniences. We are not only competing for legroom, we are also competing for the armrest and even breathing space! As airlines push seats closer and closer together, civility among passengers continues to decline.

he New England Journal of Medicine recently reported on the relationship between vitamin D supplements and bone fractures. Researchers at Oregon State University analyzed 11 different studies done with and without calcium, which often is given at the same time as vitamin D. All participants were age 65 or older.
We are a federally designated debt relief agency pursuant to Title 11 of the U.S. Code, to help people file bankruptcy
The study concluded that there is a correlation between low levels of vitamin D and early death in older adults. Specifically, researchers looked at vitamin D levels in “frail seniors,” a group defined by having three of the following five characteristics: exhaustion, slow walking, muscle weakness, low levels of physical activity and unintentional
YOU’RE ONLY AS ENERGY EFFICIENT AS YOUR OLDEST APPLIANCE.
The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force found “strong evidence” that seniors need both vitamin D and regular exercise to prevent fractures from falls. So how do we get vitamin D? Ideally we get it from our diet (though there’s not much in our food) and sunshine. But many of us live in areas where it’s too cold to continue walking outside when winter comes. That’s where vitamin D supplements come in. Ask your doctor if you need a test to determine your vitamin D levels. Ask, too, whether you are in a high-risk group and perhaps need to have your balance, gait and vision assessed. Getting more vitamin D could be as simple as adding certain types of fish to your diet and taking calcium and vitamin D supplements. Don’t try this on your own because your personal dose will vary. Ask your doctor first. Matilda Charles regrets that she cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into her column whenever possible. SOMETIMES HEARTBURN CAN LEAD TO CANCER DEAR DR. DONOHUE: For many years, I had heartburn, and I lived with it by taking things like Tums. Finally, I consulted a doctor, who referred me to a gastroenterologist because he was alarmed at the length of time I’d had it. The gastroenterologist gave me a scope exam of my esophagus and stomach. It turns out I have GERD and something called Barrett’s esophagus, which turns into cancer. Naturally, I am nervous. I’ve never heard of heartburn-caused cancer. How often does that happen? -- A.S. ANSWER: Not often, but enough that plans have to be made to keep checking for such a change. Heartburn is officially called GERD, gastroesophageal reflux disease. Stomach acid squirts upward (refluxes) into the swallowing tube, the esophagus. The esophagus isn’t built to deal with stomach acid the way the stomach is. The result is heartburn.
Enjoy the Beauty of Colorado Without the Sneeze or the Wheeze.
Medicines for GERD are many. The ones most often chosen are proton-pump inhibitors, medicines that all but turn off acid production. Their names are Prevacid (lansoprazole), Dexilant (dexlansoprazole), Prilosec (omeprazole), Nexium (esomeprazole), Protonix (pantoprazole) and Aciphex (rabeprazole). Up to 12 percent of GERD patients, even with treatment, develop Barrett’s esophagus. The lining cells of the lower part of the esophagus change into ones that are more resistant to stomach acid. That change can evolve into another transformation that is precancerous. That’s called dysplasia. Dysplasia can then become cancer. The absolute risk for this is small, but it is real, and has to be carefully looked for. If the Barrett’s cells show signs of lowgrade dysplasia, then a follow-up scope exam of the esophagus is done in six to 12 months and repeated annually. If highgrade changes are found, the scope exam is repeated every six months. If no dysplasia changes are seen, follow-up exams are scheduled for every three years. The booklet on hiatal hernia and GERD gives a comprehensive treatment on this subject. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 501W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.

GROWING GARLIC
I
f your family is anything like ours, than Garlic is a staple ingredient in your kitchen. We like to add it to everything from spaghetti to mac n’ cheese in our house. Yum! Also around our house garlic is used as a natural garden pesticide. Just mix together garlic, cayenne and soap! It even seems to have an effect on keeping rabbits and deer away. Of course try not to spill any on your clothes or you’ll be keeping more than bugs and deer away! In addition to making a great Chimichurri sauce garlic has been said to help prevent certain kinds of cancer, work as an effective acne treatment and keep vampires away. And since we eat plenty of garlic at our house and I’ve never seen a vampire, it must work! Now, how do you grow garlic? Well, first thing you need to do is prepare your planting site. Choose a sunny location that gets at least 8 hours of sun. Then like any new planting area, it needs to be amended. Add about 2-3 inches of good compost and then a tsp. each of
blood meal and bone meal for every garlic clove to be planted. Work that into the soil about 6-8 inches down. Good amending is going to pay off later! Each bulb can then be separated and each clove planted, with skins on, 3-4 inches deep. One of the most important tips is to plant the first week of October because the time of planting greatly affects the size of your bulbs at harvest. You can cover your planting site with a thick layer of straw or, according to a local garlic grower, dried comfrey leaves which add nutrients to the soil that are very beneficial to garlic. After this continue to water as needed throughout the fall and into the spring keeping the soil moist but not soggy.

In the late spring fertilize every few weeks and break off any flowers that appear. This will send the energy back down to the bulb and you can use it to cook the same way you use the clove! Harvest mid summer when the leaves start to brown and the bulbs are big, usually around the end of July. Cure your garlic by setting your bulbs on a newspaper in a well ventilated spot out of the sun and in about 2-3 weeks your garlic will be dried and ready to be used and stored. Don’t forget to save some of your biggest bulbs for replanting in the fall!

She also was the first Americanborn saint beatified by the Roman Catholic Church. • On Sept. 1, 1850, circus entrepreneur P.T. Barnum brings to the United States Jenny Lind, the greatest opera performer in the world in the mid-19th century. Lind -- “The Swedish Nightingaleâ€? -- was a sensation. Her tour is believed to have netted Barnum close to a half-million dollars, an astonishing sum in 1850. • On Aug. 27, 1883, the most powerful volcanic eruption in recorded history occurs on Krakatau (also called Krakatoa), a small island located in Indonesia. Heard 3,000 miles away, the explosions threw 5 cubic miles of earth 50 miles into the air and created 120-foot tsunamis. • On Aug. 29, 1942, the Red Cross reveals that Japan has refused free passage of ships

SPICE UP YOUR RICE
R
ice is a staple food for two-thirds of the world’s population. In fact, 85 percent of the rice consumed in the U.S. is grown right here! Farmers in Arkansas, California, Louisiana, Texas, Missouri and Mississippi produce more than 20 billion pounds of rice each year. They produce high-quality varieties of short-, medium- and long-grain rice, as well as specialty rices including basmati, arborio, red aromatic, black japonica and jasmine. Jasmine is a long-grain rice variety, also known as fragrant, aromatic or scented rice. Grown in the mountain highlands of Thailand for centuries, jasmine rice was first cultivated for the royalty of the kingdom of Siam. It’s named after the sweet-smelling jasmine flower of Southeast Asia. Jasmine rice has a naturally distinctive scent released during the cooking process and is likened to a flowery perfume. Jasmine rice is praised for its whiteness and silkiness. When cooked, it is soft, white and fluffy. According to the American Dietetic Association, rice is a good choice for a healthy diet. It is a good source of complex carbohydrates and can help you achieve a reduced-fat diet. Rice also is gluten-free -- as long as you watch how it’s prepared. Many recipes and restaurants use chicken stock instead of water to cook their rice. Some chicken stocks contain gluten, so any rice cooked in such stocks is not gluten-free. This recipe is a perfect way to create a gluten-free side dish using jasmine rice. Nutrient-dense parsley adds to the health benefits and flavor.
LEMON-LIME JASMINE PARSLEY RICE 1 3/4 cups water 1 1/2 cups jasmine or white rice 1 teaspoon salt, divided
1/2 cup pine nuts, toasted 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 1 cup diced green onions 1 clove garlic, minced 2 tablespoons lemon juice 2 tablespoons lime juice 1 1/2 teaspoons stevia or agave syrup 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper to taste 1 cup finely chopped parsley 1. Place rice in a glass bowl containing 3 cups cool water. Move your fingers through grains of rice to remove some of the excess starch. Drain, refill bowl with cool water and repeat the process until the water looks clear and without any milky residue. Drain off the water. 2. Place rice in a pot with 1/2 teaspoon salt. Bring rice to a boil, uncovered. Turn heat down to the lowest setting. Cover and simmer until the rice is cooked through (about 20 minutes). Remove rice from the heat and allow to sit, still covered, for at least 10 minutes before fluffing with a fork. 3. While rice cooks, toast pine nuts in a dry skillet over medium-low heat. Shake skillet frequently, about every 30 seconds, to ensure even browning. Pine nuts are small and full of rich oil, and will burn quickly if not watched carefully. When nuts are fragrant and lightly browned, remove pan from heat. Transfer pine nuts to a plate to cool. 4. Add oil to the pan and saute green onions for 2 minutes. Add garlic and cook for another 1 to 2 minutes. Add in lemon and lime juice, stevia and remaining salt. Add cooked rice, pine nuts, black pepper and parsley. Continue to cook until parsley is slightly wilted. Serves 4. Angela Shelf Medearis is an award-winning children’s author, culinary historian and the author of seven cookbooks. New DVD Releases for Week of August 27, 2012 MOVIES OF THE WEEK
“Battleship” (PG-13) -- This vessel doesn’t even deliver a shipment of cheap thrills. There are no thrills, and everything in this flick is a clear product of a bloated budget. The hero is Lt. Alex Hopper (Taylor Kitsch, who you don’t remember from the bigger-budgeted mega-flop “John Carter”). He’s on this boat with Liam Neeson as his superior. The aliens are heaping eyefuls of computer-generated machines without much menace or intrigue to them.
Somehow inspired by the board game of the same name, director Peter Berg gets only white pegs, since every shot he takes is a miss. This could be -- simultaneously -- the loudest movie ever and the easiest to sleep through. “The Lucky One” (PG-13) -- This one fits squarely in the “Another Nicholas Sparks Adaptation” category. Zac Efron’s character was a Marine in Iraq who became fixated on a found-photo of some woman, and believes it kept him alive. He seeks out the girl from the photo when he returns to the states, and finds Beth (Taylor Schilling), a single mother who runs a dog kennel. When he finds her, instead of professing his love (or whatever), he accepts a job helping out around the place. Other Sparks books have been handled better, but this is no “The Notebook.” Efron and Schilling have no discernible chemistry. If you want to hear the sappiest dia-
log ever uttered with sunbeams and tree boughs framing every shot, you could do better with the Hallmark Channel. “Think Like a Man” (PG-13) -- It may be somewhat standard romantic-comedy fare, but it’s non-toxic and kinda sweet. Drawing from Steve Harvey’s book “Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man,” the story follows a group of men and women with different issues in their different relationships. The cast is a likable assembly of attractive people. The spread-out story is handled well enough that nothing feels lost. All in all, for an ensemble romcom that doesn’t get weighed down in details or depression, this movie has the right mindset. “Darling Companion” (PG-13) -- Kevin Kline and Diane Keaton are a married couple with a fading spark. Keaton’s character forms a strong bond with a dog she finds on the side of the road, nurses him back
12
to health and names him “Freeway.” In a beautiful vacation home in the mountains, the dog runs off, and the affluent middleaged people must find their dog and probably fix their marriage in the process. It’s about as tedious and slow as it sounds, but maybe inoffensive and accessible if you’re not wholly paying attention.

TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Some light begins to shine on professional and/or personal situations that have long eluded explanation. Best advice: Don’t rush things. All will be made clear in time. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Although you might want to protest what seems to be an unfair situation, it’s best to keep your tongue and temper in check for now. The full story hasn’t yet come out. A thoughtless comment to the wrong person -- even if it’s said in jest -- could delay or even derail your progress. Your supporters stand with you. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Be careful not to let your on-the-job zealousness create resentment with co-workers who might feel you shut them out. Prove them wrong by including them in your project.

But there are still too many gaps that need to be filled in before you make definitive plans. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Continue to keep a tight hold on the reins so that you don’t charge willy-nilly into a situation that might appear attractive on the surface but lack substance. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) You still need to demand those answers to your questions. Remember, your wise counseling earns you respect, but it’s your search for truth that gives you wisdom. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) You’ll find that people are happy to help you deal with some difficult situations. And, of course, knowing you, you’ll be happy to return those favors anytime. Won’t you? PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Give that special someone in your personal life a large, loving dollop of reassurance. That will go a long way toward restoring the well-being of your ailing relationship. BORN THIS WEEK: You are a delightful paradox. You like things neat and tidy. But you’re also a wonderful host who can throw a really great party.

It was originally intended that the day would be filled with a street parade to allow the public to appreciate the work of the trade and labor organizations. After the parade, a festival was to be held to amuse local workers and their families. In later years, prominent men and women held speeches. This is less common now, but is sometimes seen in election years. One of the reasons for choosing to celebrate this on the first Monday in September was to add a holiday in the long gap between Independence Day and Thanksgiving.
The Colorado Balloon Classic
www.balloonclassic.com It's an amazing sight to see over 75 hot air balloons ascend into the deep blue Colorado sky. The event is held in Memorial Park, in Colorado Springs, off Pikes Peak Avenue between Hancock Avenue and Union Boulevard near the shores of Prospect Lake. Mass ascensions of dozens of balloons are scheduled for Saturday, Sunday and Monday mornings with a Balloon Glo® scheduled for Saturday and Sunday evenings. Each year a variety of concessions are available and entertainment is provided during each event. The Colorado Balloon Classic (a division of Colorado Springs Balloon Classic, Inc.) was organized in 1977 and has grown to be the largest and the longest continuously running hot air balloon festival in the Rocky Mountain Region as well as the State of Colorado. The Colorado Balloon Classic is an annual family event - admission is free - held each Labor Day weekend.
