SNIPPETZ TAKES A WALK THROUGH
THE GARDEN OF THE GODS by Toni Hamill
ISSUE 566 • SEPTEMBER 3, 2012

eginning in the late 1700s, fur trappers and goldseekers camped in the Garden of the Gods and carved their names on the rocks. Some of these people became inuential in the future state of Colorado.
FIRST NATIONAL BANK MONUMENT
IN THE BEGINNING The oldest of several trappers’ names carved in the rocks is that of WLL Ketner (WLL Ketner 1731, west side of White Rock). Most of the names, however, were from “Pikes Peak or Bust goldseekers in the mid 1800s. The Lawrence Party camped on Camp Creek from July 8 to Aug. 10, 1858. Several members of this group carved their names on the rocks just west of their camp in what is now known as the Garden of the Gods. William Hartley (Wm Hartley 1858 south side of Autograph Rock) was a civil engineer and surveyor who moved with the Lawrence Party north to the Russell Diggings at the mouth of Cherry Creek in September of 1858.

The group laid out a town on the east side of the Platte River about five miles from the mouth of Cherry Creek and called it “Montana.” The men realized they had made a mistake in laying out a town five miles from the regular trail, so on the 24th of September, 1858 they went to the mouth of Cherry Creek, surveyed, and laid out the town of St. Charles, consisting of 640 acres lying east of the Platte River and Cherry Creek. They returned to Lawrence, Kansas for the winter, and while there, William Hartley and T.C. Dickson collaborated on a descriptive guidebook to the new goldfields to sell to the Fifty-Niners by mail order for a dollar.

Wright and his new companions returned to the mouth of Cherry Creek where they built a two-story log cabin on the west side of the creek. The town of Auraria was soon laid out around it. By the spring of 1860, Andrew Wright was back in the Pikes Peak region. In May or June of that year, he and Jersey Hinman laid claim to Jimmy Camp, the famous stopover on the Old Trappers’ Trail, 15 miles east of the Garden of the Gods. The two men laid out a foundation of logs just down the hill from the famous Jimmy Camp springs, but decided to abandon their claim after only a day and a half. Wright eventually settled with his family in Denver where he opened Denver’s first livery stable with George Estabrook.
MORE GOLD SEEKERS
THE LAWRENCE PARTY
Another group of gold seekers, the Larimer Party, left Leavenworth, Kansas for the goldfields on Oct. 1, 1858 with eight wagons, six months supply of provisions, and 32 men, arriving in Auraria on Nov. 16, 1858. General Larimer and his men formed the Denver
Another member of the Lawrence Party, Andrew C. “Jack” Wright (A.C. Wright 1858 under a star composed of two equilateral triangles, south side of Autograph Rock southeast of North Gateway Rock) grew up in Natrick, Massachusetts and moved to Lawrence, Kansas in 1855 at the age of 20. Wright moved with the Lawrence Party north to the Russell Diggings, and by Oct. 1, he had moved up the South Platte to Henderson Island and camped with squawmen (men who had Indian wives).

City Company and adopted a constitution. They jumped the claim of the town site of St. Charles, across Cherry Creek from Auraria, re-surveyed and renamed it Denver City in honor of James W. Denver, the governor of Kansas. Marshall M. Jewett (M.M. Jewett Aug. 7O on the south side of North Gateway Rock), another member of this group, was an original member of the Colorado City Town Company organized at the office of Richard Whitsitt on Larimer Street in Denver City on August 11, 1859. The company was organized to lay out a town at the entrance of the Ute Pass at the base of Pikes Peak. Melancthon S. Beach and Rufus E. Cable, who gave the Garden of the Gods its name, were delegated to proceed on horseback to the new town site and locate it as Colorado City. Two days later, on Aug. 13, 1859, a sign was erected southeast of the Garden of the Gods claiming 1,280 acres, extending a mile wide and two miles long from Camp Creek to Monument Creek. In late February, 1860, Jewett sold half

of his interest to Joseph M. McCubbin for $150. On April 26, 1860, Jewett purchased from John Gerrish, E. Cobb, and J. Lauber their original interest in the town site for $425. On July 13, 1860, Jewett sold the other half of his original interest to McCubbin for an extra $400, thus realizing a profit of $125 in five months.
JOHN M. GOOD A true ‘59er, John M. Good (North Gateway Rock) was born in AlsaceLorraine, France in 1835. He came to the United States when he was 19 and settled in Akron, Ohio. At the age of 24, Good joined the great Pikes Peak Gold Rush, and at Denver City in 1859, he opened one of the first general merchandising stores in the new settlement. He freighted his goods overland from the Missouri Valley, making as many as 16 trips over the next several years. By April of 1860, John Good had entered into partnerships with Fred Solomon and Charles Endlich to manufacture lager beer under the name of Solomon & Co. By 1870, Good had established the Rocky Mountain Brewing Company, which he later sold to Philip Zang. After leaving the brewery business, Good invested heavily in mining, banking, railroad and real estate. He accumulated a large fortune and was twice appointed treasurer of the city of Denver. He died in Denver on Nov. 24, 1928, at the age of 84.
General Albert H. Jones carved his name high above the little cave on the west side of White Rock (A H Jones 1869 St. Louis, Mo.). Jones was born in Newark, New Jersey in 1839. During the Civil War, he fought with the Hawkins’ Zouaves, Company B, Ninth New York Infantry. Shortly before the end of the war, he was transferred to a gunboat and was badly crushed by a falling mast. After recovering from his wounds, Jones came west, arriving in Denver in 1866. He opened a wholesale liquor store on 16th and Market Streets, and in 1878, organized the Chaffee Light Artillery Company. He served as captain of the governor’s guard, and for nearly 15 years acted as brigadier general and inspector general of the Colorado National Guard. In 1890, General Jones was appointed United States Marshall for Colorado. After retiring from that office, he pursued his mining interest until his death on Nov. 16, 1910 in Denver. More stories about the names on the rocks and the history of the Garden of the Gods can be found in “Images of America Garden of the Gods by local author Toni Hamill and the Manitou Springs Heritage Center, available directly from the author at tonihamill@comcast.net, or at Covered Treasures book store in Monument as well as Walgreens, Garden of the Gods Visitor Center and other book retailers.

n my basic business etiquette workshops, I remind attendees to smile before they answer the phone or make a phone call of their own. There are many basic benefits to smiling.
PALMER LAKE WELLNESS CENTER
Smiling makes us more attractive. People are drawn to someone who is smiling, even if only to find out what they are smiling about. Smiling also changes our mood. Next time you are feeling down, try putting on a smile. There’s a good chance you mood will change for the better. Smiling can trick the body into helping you change your mood. Smiling is contagious. When someone is smiling they lighten up the room, change the moods of others, and make things happier.

There are many health benefits associated with smiling. Smiling helps the immune system to work better. When you smile, immune function improves possibly because you are more relaxed. Prevent the flu and colds by smiling. There is also a measurable reduction in your blood pressure when you are smiling. Give it a try if you have a blood pressure monitor at home. Sit for a few minutes, take a reading. Then smile for a minute and take another reading while still smiling. Do you notice a difference?

greeted with a smile? What if every customer who called your business could hear you smiling over the phone? When the transaction was over, how would your customers feel if you smiled and thanked them for their business? Do you think it would impact your bottom line? The answer is obvious. A smile is one of the easiest ways to build your business. Not only do your customers feel good, you and your employees get the same positive benefit. Some days you may not feel like smiling. Perhaps it is late in the afternoon and you haven’t had a chance to eat your lunch. Just as you head to an out-of-theway spot to grab your sandwich, someone walks in the door. You really have to work to smile. Perhaps the last person you spoke to on the phone just chewed you out. When the phone rings again, if you haven’t recovered from that unpleasant experience, a grin is hard to come by. Every customer deserves a pleasant greeting no matter how you feel. In addition to exceptional services and products, people want three things from those with whom they do business. None of the three will cost you a cent. People want and need eye contact, a smile and to hear their name. As it turns out, the month of May is National Smile month. No need to wait until then however, make smiling a priority in your business every day from now on, and you will reap the benefits. he Medicare open-enrollment period is coming up soon. During that time you’ll have the chance to review plans and coverage that you’ll want in 2013. You’ll be able to add, drop or change drug coverage. You can switch from an original plan to Medicare Advantage, or vice versa. You can go from one Advantage plan to another, such as one that has drug coverage versus one that doesn’t.
We are a federally designated debt relief agency pursuant to Title 11 of the U.S. Code, to help people file bankruptcy
YOU’RE ONLY AS ENERGY EFFICIENT AS YOUR OLDEST APPLIANCE.
The good news is that the drug plan rates aren’t going up. The average premium for basic drug coverage is likely to be $30 for the third year in a row. Thanks to the Affordable Care Act, the “doughnut hole” is shrinking. The
U.S. Department of Health and Human Services says 52 million people on Medicare have saved $3.9 billion on drug costs, which averages more than $600 per person per year. Between now and 2020, coverage will increase until the doughnut hole is closed altogether. This year we’ve had a 50 percent discount on name-brand drugs during the time the doughnut hole has been in effect, plus a discount of 14 percent on generic drugs. Next year, in 2013, that will increase to 52.5 percent and 21 percent respectively. Figuring out just when you initially need to sign up for Social Security and Medicare can be tricky because the year, month and date you’re born determine your eligibility. Go online to www.medicare.gov and look for the eligibility tools and the plan finder. Or call Medicare at 1-800-633-4227. The number for Social Security is 1-800772-1213. Put this on your calendar: The Medicare enrollment period this year starts Oct. 15 and ends Dec. 7, 2012. The new choices take effect Jan. 1, 2013. here’s been some talk lately of a certain royal icon’s drunken Vegas escapades. Of course we are all only human. But there’s something greater expected from royalty. Here in America, we don’t have that problem, as we left that tradition to more ancient nations. But what if we did have royalty here? Would we expect good behavior and certain set of moral standards? Well, it’s about time for us to find out. Pinz Bowling Center is starting a revolution (again), as its new Kings and Queens Tournament gives bowlers the opportunity to be royalty for the night. The weekly bracket takes place every Saturday night, beginning this week, September 8th. It requires a $16 dollar entry with the chance to take home $60 as the winner, as well as 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place prizes that will see your wallet grow. The tournament is open to all Bowlers who enter with their 2011/2012 USBC book averages.
Enjoy the Beauty of Colorado Without the Sneeze or the Wheeze.
Of course un-established bowlers are also welcome to join at 220. Every week the top 4 bowlers face off in a single-game elimination tournament to decide that weeks King or Queen of the alley.
Individualized treatment for: Nasal Allergies Chronic Sinusitis Food Allergy Hives Eczema Asthma
Of course the question greater than that of who will be champion is – how will the champion conduct him or her self? Will they go on drunken escapades in celebration of their feat (Rodz Bar and Grill is open until 2am on Saturday nights)? Maybe the champion will have the grace of legendary royalty, staying humble and preparing for next week. Or perhaps they will take it too far; what if the winner followed up their victory by demanding service and praise from anyone who came across their path over the course of the week? Personally, I think that would be awesome. The point is, though, that if you are the King or Queen you can choose how to handle that title. Unlike across the sea, here in America we will grant our royalty based on skill, not on bloodline. So enter Pinz’ newest weekly tournament and finally wear the great gold crown that is victory.

FALL ASTERS
F
all is my favorite time of the year. The weather is cooler and the sun seems to shine sideways, highlighting all of the plants and flowers in our garden. Nature has been working hard all year and now it’s really putting on a grand finale of color. All of our ornamental grasses are in full effect, the Russian Sage is still going strong, and the Dragon’s Blood Sedum is burning bright red with shoots of bright red flowers. This is also the time when we buy our mums and our fall pansies. One of my favorites is the Pansy ‘Halloween Mix’. It’s a mix of blacks and oranges that last through many of our early light frosts. I am always looking for new and underappreciated plants and this time of year I think the Aster is often left in the shadow of the mighty mum so just to help a guy out; I’d like to put a few varieties in the spotlight. When we think of fall bloomers I think mums come first to mind but asters are never far behind. And when it comes to Asters I have two favorites, wait no three favorites. I might have four, but I’ll just start
A unique approach to dealing with trauma, depression, anxiety, anger, relationship issues & personal growth.
with three. The first is one many of us have in our yards called ‘Purple Dome’, and when it blooms it is exactly that, a purple dome. A dark purple dome that blooms for a solid four weeks. I love it! The other is a little less common. It is called ‘Lady in Black’. I just love the name alone! As you might imagine it has dark purple/black foliage and blankets itself with small pink/lavender flowers. The shape of the plant itself is irregular and because of its dark foliage it is a great accent plant before it blooms in the spring and summer too. The last one is ‘Alma Potschke’. She is a dark heavenly pink flower with cheery yellow centers and like the ‘Lady in Black’ becomes covered in blooms from late summer clear until frost. She is the hardiest of the three so you guys that are a little higher up, she is a good one for you!

• On Sept. 9, 1776, the Continental Congress formally declares the name of the new nation to be the “United Statesâ€? of America. It replaced the term “United Colonies,â€? which had been in general use. • On Sept. 3, 1783, the American Revolution officially comes to an end when representatives of the United States, Great Britain, Spain and France sign the Treaty of Paris. The signing signified America’s status as a free nation, as Britain formally recognized the independence of its 13 former American colonies. • On Sept. 7, 1936, Charles Harden Holley is born in Lubbock, Texas. Writing and performing under the name Buddy Holly, he would have an influence on rock ‘n’ roll that would far outlast his tragically shortened career. SNIPPETZ DINING GUIDE ®
TAKE YOUR OATS OUT TO DINNER
W
hile oatmeal is a wonderful way to add fiber, grains, nutrients to your diet, most folks think of oatmeal as a breakfast food. It’s time to take oatmeal beyond breakfast. Oatmeal is a whole grain because it contains all of the parts of the oat grain, including the bran, endosperm and germ. The interesting thing is that when we eat the regular oatmeal most of us grew up with, we aren’t eating the grain in its original form. We are usually eating rolled oats. Rolled oats have been steamed and flattened. That process decreases the cooking time so oldfashioned oatmeal can be prepared in 10 to 25 minutes. Quick-cooking oats that can be prepared in 3 to 5 minutes have been cut even more finely to reduce cooking time. Some people prefer steel-cut oats. The primary difference between steel cut oats and rolled oats is the shape of the grain. Steelcut oats are not flattened -- the grain is cut into thirds and then packaged for sale. When preparing steel-cut oats, it’s best to use 4 cups of water to each cup of oats. The cooking time for steel-cut oats is 30 to 40 minutes. Steel-cut oats have a chewy texture and hearty flavor. All oatmeal is a good source of fiber, magnesium and thiamine. It also contains phosphorus, potassium, iron and copper. Oatmeal carries a health claim on the food label because of the fiber content. The health claim is that oatmeal -- along with a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol -- may reduce the risk of heart disease. Oatmeal is a good source of soluble fiber, which acts as a sponge in the digestive tract to help remove cholesterol from the body. Adding oatmeal to these delicious Salmon Cakes boosts the nutrients and adds a delicious texture to the dish. The Yogurt Dill Sauce complements the Salmon Cakes and is the perfect topping if you prefer to serve the Salmon Cakes on a bun.

New DVD Releases for Week of September 3, 2012 PICKS OF THE WEEK “The Five-Year Engagement” (R) -- Jason Segel and Emily Blunt star in this charming romantic comedy about modern couplehood. It starts when Segel proposes to Blunt by the San Francisco bay, and everything is great. Then she gets accepted into a prestigious academic program in Michigan, so the wedding is put on hold and moved to the Midwest. And from there, the delays and little surprises keep
on coming, and the length of the movie extends to over two hours. Segel is proving himself a formidable writer/star. He plays the loveable goof like he was born for it. Blunt is adorable and has no trouble with on-screen chemistry. Chemistry seems to come to her so easily she might as well be hydrogen. If you can handle the run time and get past the sagging middle section, “The Five-Year Engagement” just might pay off. “Safe” (R) -- Jason Statham is right where he needs to be on this one -- a get-whatyou-paid-for straightforward action flick that delivers. This time he’s a beaten-down cage fighter who ran afoul of the Russian mafia and lost his family. When he notices the gangsters who ruined his life are attacking a little girl, Statham springs into action without knowing the whole story. This is the pasta with meat sauce of action
flicks -- nearly impossible to mess up. The recipe is simple: A washed-up tough guy protecting an innocent from the pointless cruelty of an evil organization must shoot, punch, drive and grimace his way to redemption. If it’s a rental action flick you want, know that “Safe” lives up to its title.
DOG OF THE WEEK “Piranha 3DD” (R) -- A sequel to a painfully unfunny self-parody from 2010, this gorefest has about as much wit as the breast joke in its title. Once again, a bunch of annoying young people clamoring for a party by a body of water are exposed to an army of hungry, computer-generated piranhas. Too many winks at the audience and not enough talent behind the camera make this wannabe shocker an irredeemable waste of time. “Re-Animator” (R) -- For a reminder

of what a ghastly horror comedy can be, check out this re-release of the classic 1985 thriller. Based on a short story by H.P. Lovecraft, master of chills, this flick injects deadpan humor into a story about a science gone wrong. Dr. Herbert West invents a serum that can bring dead tissue to life, but his breakthrough is taken over by his corrupt superior, who uses it on himself.

GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A trusted colleague has news that could change your perception of a current workplace situation. What had seemed unfair might prove to be highly favorable after all. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) You still need to watch what you say and how you say it. What you assert as honesty, others might perceive as Crabbiness. Be patient. This difficult period clears up by the weekend. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Your Royalness needs time away from the limelight to catch up on things, from tidying your desk to making those calls you’ve put off. You’re back in the center of things by the weekend. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Honesty is the best policy, of course. But you’ll do better at achieving your goals if you can be less aggressive and more circumspect in how you phrase your comments.
13
SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Your indecisiveness could simply be your keen Scorpian sense warning you to be wary of making a commitment. Take this time to do a more thorough investigation. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Good news: New information comes your way to help you make a more informed decision on how to deal with the opportunity that has opened up for you. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) This is a good time to reinforce your selfconfidence by acknowledging your good qualities to yourself. A lull in your social life ends by the weekend. Have fun. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) It’s a good time to let those recently pent-up emotions flow more freely. Why not start by letting the people you care for know how you really feel about them? PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Resist offers, no matter how well-intentioned, to help with a personal decision. Only you know what must be done, and you have the emotional strength to follow through. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a talent for getting things done. You also have a gift for bringing people together in both personal and professional relationships.

Free Streaming?
You can find websites that advertise free online streaming of the NFL games. The unfortunate fact is that none of these sites are genuine. That isn't to say you don't get to watch the game. It just won't be legal. Why should you care? First, you can get in trouble with your service provider, which means you might lose your Internet privileges. Also, the streaming video quality is usually terrible. It especially gets corrupted during fast-paced action -- the very thing you most want to watch! You often can't even tell what's going on. And yes, anytime you visit a questionable website, the risk of exposing your computer to viruses is more likely. Here are some legitimate ways to watch NFL games and be sure you'll have a good viewing experience. The Cheapest Way to go: If you don't want to spring for special channels and packages, major networks on basic cable, specifically FOX and NBC, typically carry weekly games. Plus, your subscription might already include sports networks like Fox Sports or ESPN. HULU If you want free internet NFL viewing, check out Hulu: www.hulu.com/tv/genres/sports You can watch past games, highlights and interviews. Just look under your favorite team's name or in the Game of the Week section.

HOW ABOUT A DATE A MONEY DATE?
D
o you remember those times when you first started dating your spouse, how special it was? How you wanted to spend every minute with each other? How you would share your goals, your dreams, and your visions of the future? How on those hot summer nights you would look dreamily into each other’s eyes and start talking personal finance? No? Well, maybe you should. It is never too late for a Money date. For most couples the issues surrounding money and it use and abuse will be the single greatest stress in their marriage. Arguing over money can cause irreparable damage in a relationship if left unresolved. Far too often when couples finally start to talk about money the situation has already reached a boiling point. At that point it becomes more about hurt feelings, blame and defensiveness than resolution. Money problems are the most often cited reason for divorce in America today. Yet, for the couple that can work through their differences in attitude, upbringing and experiences, money can become a tool that brings them closer together. When couples make the time to create shared goals, they have defined their financial direction and found a

common dream to work towards together. I am often amazed at how the simple act of spending time together, really thinking about what is important, writing it down and prioritizing it can bring about an incredible bond between a married couple; a bond worthy of celebration. Enter the money date. A money date is not about blame or accusations, or the current financial mishaps. It is a time to rejoice and celebrate God’s hand in our financial lives. Oftentimes we overlook the importance of celebrating the successes in our lives. We ignore the opportunity to be a cheerleader or to give encouragement. Yet, it is those small steps and simple kind words that lead to great success. The money date purposely sets aside time to do just that; to celebrate the financial successes in our lives.

Money issues and concerns can wreak havoc or they can become a bonding force in a marriage. That is our choice. This week why not make time for a money date? “…each of you looking to the others’ interest rather than to his own.” Phil 2:4 Chuck Maher is a Certified Financial
So what would a money date look like? It could start simple with meeting for a cup of coffee or tea at your favorite bistro. But remember to leave all the baggage at the door. Open your date with expressions of gratitude for each other and the blessing that the Lord has provided and then liberally give thanks to each other. Take some time to revisit your goals and dreams. Then review your financial choices and decisions of the past week. Recognize even the smallest of steps that bring you closer to your goals and praise each other. Finally, do something special – celebrate. That could be something as simple as a walk in the park or a single rose, but make it special. After all it is a date.
