f embarking on a tour to partake in the beautiful Colorado fall landscape makes your family members want to ip a coin to determine who loses and has to do the driving, think about a train ride. There are many affordable train travel options all over Colorado which give everyone a chance to sit back and enjoy the breathtaking scenery the state has to offer.
AROUND THE CIRCLE It all started in 1892 when the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad wanted to generate interest in narrow gauge travel in the state of Colorado. The “Around the Circle tour was 1,000 miles through the Rocky Mountain region – quite a feat for 1892. According to Mark L. Evans, The Narrow Gauge Circle, “the tour was an incredibly popular destination for many early day adventurers.

SOME NOT TO MISS TRIPS
The trip started in Denver on the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad. It headed south, stopping in Colorado Springs, which was reputed to have some of the better resorts and health spas in the U.S. Onward to Pueblo and then Alamosa via either Veta Pass or Poncha Pass. From Alamosa, the tour ran through the Toltec Gorge and dipped down into Chama, New Mexico. For this part of the route that can be taken today, see the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad section below.
Although the “Around the Circle” trip is not available in its original format today, there are numerous small trips available for the adventurous scenery lover.
This company offers three different routes along the San Isabel National Forest running between La Veta and Alamosa. The steam engine offers dome cars from which you can see views from many angles. Routes throughout the winter are also available.

The Denver & Rio Grande Railway began construction on this line to Silverton in 1881, two years after they founded Durango. It only took a little over a year to complete for use in hauling silver and gold. It didn’t take long for people to discover the views to be enjoyed.
From Ridgeway, the Denver and Rio Grande took the traveler to Montrose before heading back to Denver. The trip to Denver at this point was not exactly short and insignificant. It ran through the Black Canyon of the Gunnison, the Grand Canyon, the Royal Gorge and Salida.
8674 N. Union Boulevard
The biggest challenge here is choosing which ride to take, so maybe part of the “bucket list” is to take each and every one at some point in time. And every ride is different, so for the enthusiast, multiple trips on the same ride are a must because every day along these routes offers a different site.
Undoubtedly one of the more popular trips in Colorado, this steam-powered locomotive soars at 200 ft. above the Animas River. Starting at Durango and ending at Silverton, it passes through canyons and wilderness of the San Juan National Forest.
Back to Colorado, the traveler stopped in Durango to pick up the Rio Grande Southern Railroad to Ridgeway. There were two routes offered, the first one running through Dolores, Trout Lake, Ophir, Placerville and Dallas Divide. The other route was a bit more adventurous, going through Silverton where the rider would change to the Silverton Railroad and travel through the San Juan’s to Ironton. From Ironton, the trip changes to a stagecoach ride over the Million Dollar Highway to Ouray, picking up the train again to Ridgway.

Built in the 1870s, the route is rich with history which included a battle between two companies that wanted to run the route. It indeed ran through 1967 and then stopped until a Colorado family brought it back to life in 1999. It now boasts more than 100,000 visitors each year. ktoberfest is something of a legend. There have been stories, legends, television episodes, and even major motion pictures depicting the fabled event. But how is one to believe what one had never seen? I mean, let’s be honest, High School is depicted every year in the fiction and entertainment; their portrayal couldn’t be further off. So how do you know if Oktoberfest in Germany is really all it’s made out to be? The answer, loyal readers, is to go find out. Now I know the “economy” has us down, and everyone can’t just swing a trip to Germany next month. Luckily, that’s not what I’m asking you to do. What I’m suggesting, is that you visit the celebration for FREE. Rodz Bar and Grill (located at Pinz Bowling Center – 855 HWY 105, Palmer Lake, CO) is once again a hosting spot for Samuel Adam’s official Stein Hoisting Competition! The rules are simple: Hold a full mug of beer straight out with one arm. See how long you can hold it without bending your arm or spilling the beer. The winner will
qualify for the next round of the national competition. The grand prize? You guessed it – a trip to Germany for Oktoberfest! It’s every beer drinkers dream come true.

And so here is the opportunity for all. Find out for yourself what the truth is. Is Oktoberfest the greatest celebration on Earth? As I said – only one way to find out; go experience it yourself. It’s a once in a lifetime prospect, and all it takes is holding a silly glass of beer straight out from your body. The best part is, everyone has a chance; and while this reporter didn’t win his category in last years local competition… my Mom did win hers.

ne of the best kitchen gadgets I’ve ever invested in is a digital thermometer. Within seconds, it tells me the temperature of the food I’m cooking and whether it’s done.
We are a federally designated debt relief agency pursuant to Title 11 of the U.S. Code, to help people file bankruptcy
Temperature is one of the most important safety steps in food preparation to avoid food poisoning. To help us stay safe, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has created a free booklet especially for us: Food Safety for Older Adults.
YOU’RE ONLY AS ENERGY EFFICIENT AS YOUR OLDEST APPLIANCE.
It has information we need to know and keep handy: How we get a food-borne illness, and what can happen to us if we do. How to choose lower-risk food options. How long food stays safe in the refrigerator. And much more.
My favorite part of the booklet, especially since I now have a high-tech digital thermometer, is the picture chart of the recommended internal temperatures of cooked food. Fish, 145 degrees. Beef, 160 degrees. And so on. (I also invested in two refrigerator/freezer thermometers to make sure the old refrigerator and freezer are keeping food at the correct temperature: 40 degrees for the refrigerator and 0 degrees for the freezer.) There are a number of steps involved in finding the booklet online, but it’s worth the trouble. Go to www.fsis.usda. gov, click Fact Sheets, At-Risk Populations, More Like This at the bottom of that category, then scroll down to the PDF version of Food Safety for Older Adults. If you can’t find it, send email to fsis.outreach@usda.gov to request the booklet. Or call the hotline and request it at 1-888-674-6854. HEALTH ADVOCACY PARTNERSHIP
If cultural practices alone do not work, then pairing them with the application of a fungicide might be necessary. Sulfur, neem oil and potassium bicarbonate are a few common ones to look for. And when shopping for plants that are known to be susceptible to powdery mildew, look for resistant varieties. There are usually several to choose from.

So what can you do about it? There are several cultural practices that when paired with a fungicide can yield good results. First it is good to ditch the habit of watering the leaves of your plants. Even though the spore does not need water to infect the plant, frequent overhead watering can create enough humid-

ildew? But we live in Colorado! Our semi-arid climate hardly seems like somewhere mildew would thrive. Yet if you have seen it then you know you’ve got it and during an especially dry season it can be a problem. Powdery Mildew can be severe in warm dry climates. Sound familiar? Yeah warm and dry sounds like our year so far and that white powdery look on your plants isn’t exactly desirable. The spore does need humidity in order to germinate. So it is commonly found in crowded or overgrown areas and is more common in the shade. The mildew is also host specific, so it cannot survive without the right host plant. In Colorado hosts include Lilac, Ash, Roses, Virginia Creeper, Lupine, and Squash and Cucumbers, among others.

ity for the spores to germinate and can lead to infection from many other diseases. So let the rain do all the overhead watering and make a new habit of watering at the base of your plants if powdery mildew is a problem. If your plant is overcrowded, a light pruning will increase air circulation and help reduce infection. In the fall remove as much of the infected parts of the plant as possible and destroy them. Do not compost! Composting can lead to the disease spreading and encourage it to over winter. And as soon as it is apparent that you have an infection eliminate any applications of nitrogen so you don’t stress the plant further. This also limits the production of new succulent growth that is more susceptible to the disease.

• On Sept. 22, 1776, in New York City, 21year-old Nathan Hale, a captain in the Continental Army, is executed by the British for spying. Before being hanged, legend holds that Hale said, “I only regret that I have but one life to lose for my country.â€? There is no historical record to prove that Hale actually made this statement. • On Sept. 18, 1793, George Washington lays the cornerstone to the United States Capitol building. The building would take nearly a century to complete, as architects came and went, the British set fire to it, and it was called into use during the Civil War. • On Sept. 23, 1846, German astronomer Johann Gottfried Galle discovers the planet Neptune. The blue gas giant, which has a diameter four times that of Earth, has eight known moons and a ring system containing three bright and two dim rings. • On Sept. 21, 1938, a powerful Category 3 hurricane slams into Long Island and southern New England. Charlie Pierce, a junior forecaster in the U.S. Weather Bureau, was
sure that the hurricane was heading for the Northeast, but the chief forecaster overruled him. All told, 700 people were killed by the hurricane. • On Sept. 19, 1959, in one of the more surreal moments in the history of the Cold War, Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev explodes with anger when he learns he cannot visit Disneyland. Government authorities feared that the crowds would pose a safety hazard. • On Sept. 17, 1965, four adventurous Englishmen arrive at a motor show in Germany after crossing the English Channel by Amphicar, the world’s only mass-produced amphibious passenger car. On land, the cars used a four-speed-plus-reverse manual transmission. In the water, they used a transfer case that had two speeds: forward and backward. • On Sept. 20, 1973, in a highly publicized “Battle of the Sexesâ€? tennis match, top women’s player Billie Jean King, 29, plays Bobby Riggs, 55, a former No. 1-ranked men’s player. Riggs, a self-proclaimed male chauvinist, had boasted that women were inferior. King beat Riggs 6-4, 6-3, 6-3. (c) 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

He ran for mayor of Carmel, Calif. He defeated the incumbent mayor in a landslide, and he kept the position for two years. His salary? Some of the changes the so-called “Hays Office” insisted upon were removing the image of a cow’s udder from a Walt Disney cartoon; and removing any direct reference to adultery in the 1935 adaptation of the Tolstoy novel “Anna Karenina” -- despite the fact that Anna’s affair is at the heart of the novel.

BACK-TO-SCHOOL LUNCHTIME TIPS
S
chool’s once again in session -- and so is your daily lunch-making routine. Here are some tips for making lunches that will keep your child healthy and happy all year long! School Lunch Safety Tips: --Keep food preparation areas in the kitchen clean. Wash countertops, cutting boards, utensils and your hands in hot, soapy water. And don’t let the family pet jump up on kitchen counters. --After preparing lunches, remember to immediately return unused portions of perishable foods -- like cheeses, deli meats and mayonnaise -- to the refrigerator. Don’t let them sit out on the counter. --Make sure that cold foods are cold before packing them in a lunch box. If possible, prepare the lunch the night before and store it in the refrigerator. (This also takes the edge off the mad morning rush!) --Insulated lunch bags or boxes are the best way to keep food at a safe temperature until noon. Nestle a frozen juice pouch or ice pack inside, and sandwiches will stay extra cool. --At school, instruct the kids to store their lunch box out of direct sunlight and away from radiators or other heaters, if possible. --Sandwiches made with refrigerated items such as luncheon meats, cheese and tuna salad should be carried in an insulated lunch bag with an ice pack. That way they should be safe to eat even after going hours without refrigeration.

1. Toss apples with lemon juice to prevent them from turning brown. Beat cream cheese in a small bowl with an electric mixer or in a food processor on medium speed until creamy. Add the honey, vanilla and cinnamon. Beat until well-blended. 2. Place 2 to 3 tablespoons per person in a re-sealable container along with 4 of the apple wedges for dipping. Makes 4 to 6 servings.
--Keep hot foods -- like soups, stews or chilies -- hot. In the morning, bring the food to a boil and then immediately pour into a hot, sterile vacuum bottle. (Sterilize the vacuum bottle with boiling water.)

New DVD Releases for Week of September 17, 2012 PICKS OF THE WEEK
“Best Exotic Marigold Hotel” (PG-13) -A handful of English retirees elect to outsource their golden years to a little place in India. Lured by brochures and sales pitches, the group discovers upon arrival that their retirement resort is really a run-down mess in a crowded, unsanitized part of a country they know nothing about. Each thinks they’re old enough to know everything, but now they all have to learn how to appreciate what’s around them.
Yes, it is that predictable, but in a sweet way. I neglected to say that the cast playing the old fogeys comprises some of the most seasoned and respected British actors: Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Billy Nighy and Tom Wilkinson deliver top-notch performances that make the cliches acceptable and save the overall experience. “Cabin in the Woods” (R) -- This is the movie that slashes the horror genre to ribbons. A bunch of hyper teenagers head out to a cabin in the woods. Anybody could predict that psycho slashers and malevolent spirits will certainly ruin the weekend. Just when you think you know what’s about to happen, when you are just so sure you know how things play out, everything changes. Is it still scary? Yes. How scary? As scary as the thought of being already terrified when your brain actually explodes. It’s also very funny. Writer Joss Whedon proves his mas-
tery of parody by making a horror movie about horror movies that is scarier and funnier than most horror movies. “The Magic of Belle Isle” (PG-13) -- Short on ideas and enthusiasm, a curmudgeonly old writer with a soothing voice (Morgan Freeman) heads for a quaint island town in upstate New York. Once a married man and a celebrated author of Western novels, he’s since been widowed and spends his time drinking and making barbed comments toward his nephew (Kenan Thompson). But when he meets the pretty single mom next door (Virginia Madsen), his heart grows more tender with each scene they share. Conflicts are resolved slow and easy, with cheesy, trite one-liners. Tension? Surprises? There’s no room for those on this island. Morgan Freeman is a pro and gives a good performance, but the magic just isn’t there. “Detachment” -- Depending on your point
12
of view, this movie is either high-powered and artistic, or just an unrelenting bummer. Adrien Brody plays a talented teacher who is so sad on the inside that he chooses to remain a substitute to avoid making emotional connections with students or colleagues. Bryan Cranston, James Caan, Lucy Liu and other fine actors play similar struggling professionals pouring themselves into education. The movie is so sulky that it loses the profound emotional impact that it’s going for.

Enjoy Colorado's Confetti of Fall Colors - Part 1 of 2

Series 6, Article 3
The beautiful aspen is the quintessential Colorado tree. We've named towns, streets, dogs - even our beer - after this glorious tree. In the summer, the aspens provide shade for our state flower, the columbine; and when fall foliage comes on the scene, Coloradans rejoice as the aspens' quaking leaves turn their vibrant shade of gold. The month of September is the ideal time to witness this gilded spectacle on a scenic drive, but you have to time it right: The color lasts only about a week in most places. It's difficult to predict when exactly the leaves will turn in any given location. The best strategy is select travel dates in advance, but not destinations. Then go wherever the color is. Here are a few road-tripping routes, sorted by region, that have become fall-color pilgrimages for aspen lovers: www.parks.state.co.us/pages/fall .aspx Here are 7 Ways to Enjoy Colorado's Confetti of Fall Colors Fall colors abound in Colorado and each year, visitors flock to the state parks to see Colorado's natural confetti. While many tour the parks by car, try a different option this year for a new twist on fall foliage by visiting the parks by bike, by foot and if you're up for a little more adventure, on horseback! 1) Finding the Confetti of Colors If you want to know when and where the fall colors are blooming, check out the Park Search page at www.parks.state.co.us/ParksSea rch/Pages/ParksSearch.aspx select the Conditions tab, check the 'Fall Colors' box, and search. Each park will provide tips on what the colors in their park look like.

LIVING GOD’S GIFTS bringing Christ into your financial life
INVESTING FROM A BIBLICAL PERSPECTIVE
by Chuck Maher, CFP®
...BRING CHRIST INTO OUR FINANCIAL LIVES
HOW WE SOWHOW WE REAP “You will plant your fields in a square and harvest them in a circle. The corners are to be left – to be harvested by the widows and orphans so that they will have food to see them through the winter.” When I first heard of this law from ancient Judea I thought it was the work of genius, of a leader who truly cared about his people. Yet the more I thought about it the more I thought how sad it was that a people would become so callous to the needs of widows and orphans that a law was needed to see to their care. I wonder now if we have also become so callous. As Christians we are generous givers especially when called to a cause, whether it’s a cataclysmic disaster or food for the local shelter. When we see a very real need we give willingly and spontaneously. But what about those needs we do not see? What about the winter utility bills for our churches, supplies for our schools, support for our community charities – those ongoing needs that never make the headlines? Without a crisis that screams for our attention far too often we simply continue along our way. We become callous to the world around us. We fail to

make the time to appreciate those very real needs of our churches, schools and charities. Like the needs of the widows and orphans in ancient Judea the needs today of those around us are very real and deserving of our attention. I believe there is a lot we can learn from the Judean farmers. For most of us today, our fields are the works that we do or if you are retired the investments you tend. Upon those fields we sow the seeds of our labor. From that we reap our rewards – our income. Like the farmers in ancient Judea, why not harvest that income in a circle? Using those rewards to fulfill your daily needs and wants, and leave the four corners to the widows and orphans – those very real ongoing needs that are so often overlooked. One corner could be given to your church, the next to a favored school. The third could be used to support local charities and the fourth given to the missions. By reserving those four corners for the needs of others we move from being a spontaneous giver to that of a purposeful giver.

In addition to helping those who are dependent upon our financial support, the purposeful giver is also well rewarded. In working with clients, I have found that those who give systematically and with purpose have much greater control of their personal finances. They have a better understanding – a better appreciation – of the income they receive and a deeper respect for their spending decisions. They have moved from being reactionary to being proactive. They have become the good steward, graciously
