“I’m happy that I have brought laughter because I have been shown by many the value of it in so many lives, in so many ways.” – Lucille Ball

FIRST NATIONAL BANK MONUMENT 581 Hwy 105, Monument CO

O

n October 15, 1951, the country was introduced to Lucy Ricardo, the loveable lead character of the television show “I Love Lucy.” Fifty-five years later, the accidentprone, fiery redhead remains a T.V. icon that can’t be rivaled. The actress behind it all, Lucille Ball, has reached a level of stardom few others will ever reach. And it all started with a failed attempt to make a name for herself at a New York City drama school.

While her time at the drama school did pose a setback, Ball didn’t let it defeat her. She used her looks and the name Diane Belmont to secure modeling jobs in New York after returning from Celoron, but was forced to go back when she developed rheumatoid arthritis at the age of 17. Her mother nursed her back to health, a three-year period in which Ball had to relearn how to walk.

LUCY’S HUMBLE BEGINNINGS Lucille Desiree Ball was born on Aug. 6, 1911 in Jamestown, N.Y. Long before she donned the hard-toignore red hair that would become her trademark, young Lucille was a brown-haired girl struggling to find her place in the world.

Ever the persistent woman, Ball headed back to New York where she finally secured a part as a Chesterfield Cigarette Girl. In 1933, Ball had her first on-screen appearance as a walkon in Broadway’s “Thru a Keyhole.” That same year, she was cast as one of the 12 Goldwyn girls in the Eddie Canter movie “Roman Scandals,” directed by Busby Berkeley.

Her father, Henry Ball, died from typhoid fever when she was just three years old. Her mother Desiree was pregnant with Ball’s younger brother Fred at the time and had to work several jobs to support herself and her family. Desiree eventually remarried when the children were still young and moved with her new husband Ed Peterson to Detroit from Jamestown. Ball and her brother remained behind in the care of their grandparents in Celoron, N.Y.

After that, Ball acquired her first speak role in 1935 and the lead in a project in 1936 that never made it to Broadway due to the sudden, untimely death of the lead male actor. For the next 15 years, Ball remained in the periphery of the television and film industry.

Ball reunited with her mother at age 11, and at age 15, convinced Desiree to let her attend the John Murray Anderson/Robert Milton School of Theater and Dance in New York. Ball was no star pupil, constantly being upstaged by fellow student Bette Davis. Several accounts indicate that Ball’s mother was encouraged to remove her daughter from the school because Ball just didn’t have what it took.

ENTER DESI ARNAZ It is said that when Ball met Cubanborn actor/musician Desi Arnaz in 1940, her dress was torn and she had a black eye after shooting a fight scene for the movie in which they both appeared, “Dance, Girl, Dance.” Arnaz didn’t notice her until after she had gussied up a bit and threw on some makeup. He is quoted to have said, “That’s a hunk o’ woman.” Ball is quoted to have said, “It wasn’t love at first sight. It took a full five minutes.” Just a few months later, the couple married at the Byram River Beagle Club. Both Ball and Arnaz lied about their ages on the marriage certificate, with Ball claiming to be younger and Arnaz claiming to be older. Arnaz was just 23 when they married, while Ball was 29 and at the time, it was a social faux pas for her to be older than Arnaz. Two years later, Ball became a redhead, and the color would become

her signature in the years to follow. Those years were rough on the young couple, whose schedules often had them on opposite sides of the country. Deciding the best way to save their marriage would be to work together rather than separately, the couple negotiated with CBS to turn the radio comedy “My Favorite Husband” into a television show. Ball, who had the starring role in the radio comedy, refused to be a part of the show without Arnaz. In 1950, CBS eventually caved, signing over the rights and creative control over the series to the couple.

BREAKING DOWN BARRIERS “I Love Lucy” was an innovative show in more ways than one. It was the first show to use the three-camera production technique that is still used in sitcoms today. This technique calls for overhead lighting which eliminates the need for filming to be stopped in order to adjust the lighting when using various camera angles.

television history. The show also featured the first interracial couple, compliments of Arnaz’s Cuban roots. And the couple also highlighted rather than downplaying Ball’s real-life pregnancy with their son, Desi Jr in 1953 (their daughter Lucie was born two years prior). The couple incorporated the pregnancy into the series, which was the first time in history that an obviously pregnant woman was playing a pregnant woman. The word ‘pregnant’ was still yet to be allowed in telecasts such as this. Ball was the first woman to head a production company (Desilu Productions), which produced several wellknown series such as “Star Trek,” “The Andy Griffith Show” and “The

LUCY FUN FACTS • “I Love Lucy” aired the birth of Lucy’s son, little Ricky, the day after President Dwight Eisenhower’s inauguration and drew 44 million viewers, while the latter only brought in 29 million.

Ball was the antithesis of her character in “I Love Lucy.” She is said to have been serious, level-headed and a perfectionist to the core. Television audiences were none the wiser, thanks to meticulous scripting on the part of the writers. While viewers saw antics that appeared to have been ad-libbed, in reality Ball rehearsed each scene to perfection. Her on-screen partner in crime, Vivian Vance who played Lucy’s best friend Ethel Mertz, mirrored Ball’s perfectionism and the pair were often

very year, officials at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and their counterparts around the globe get together to decide which combinations of vaccine should be put in flu shots. This year, of the three types that will be used (H1N1, H3N2 and influenza B virus), two of them are new.

It’s the H3N2 virus that appears to be taking off like a rocket already. In all of 2011, there were only 12 total cases. Already this year, that number is up to 306 and rising, with most of it happening since summer.

Many pharmacies have been making flu shots available for years, and some of them have now expanded to include a whole array of vaccinations:

• Dishwasher Replace • Dishwasher Install • Electric Switches • Electric Receptacles • Light Fixtures

719-472-4447

That’s quite a long list. And that’s where a potential problem lies: Should you have all those shots? No. Except for flu, most of these shots are not annual vaccines, per the CDC. For example, the Tdap is generally a booster every 10 years. A number of the others are only for those whose doctor recommends them. Some are taken in a series. And that’s where your doctor comes in. Before you line up for any shot, ask your doctor what you should get. Or have it done at the doctor’s office so it’s noted in your records. And remember that it takes two weeks for a flu shot to start working. ANSWER: Spinal stenosis is a common back problem of older people. It’s said that 20 percent of those older than 60 have it. The spinal cord is an offshoot of the brain, and it travels from the brain to the lower back. It’s about the width of your little finger and is extremely delicate. That’s why nature encased it in backbones -- vertebrae. Running through the backbones is a tunnel, the spinal canal that serves to protect the cord. Spinal stenosis is a narrowing of the tunnel. It happens mostly in the neck and lower-back regions. Thickened ligaments surrounding the spinal cord or arthritic changes of the backbones impinge on the spinal cord or the nerves that spring from it. When the process occurs in the back, pain is felt there and often in the buttocks or thighs. The pain worsens if a person stands for too long. People can ease the pain by bending forward at the waist or by sitting down. Bending opens the tunnel to give the spinal cord some breathing room. The amount of bend that works is the amount of bend a person assumes when pushing a shopping cart. Have you tried Tylenol (acetaminophen) for pain? It’s safe when used as directed on the label. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medicines such as ibuprofen (Advil) and naproxen (Aleve) also are helpful. They can cause stomach upset and stomach bleeding, so follow directions given for their use. ANSWER: Hemorrhage is massive bleeding. She bled from her uterus either during an operation or from a tumor, a twisted fibroid or an infection. Surgical shock isn’t a term used these days. Shock means that the bleeding was so great, her blood pressure dropped. Not enough blood could circulate to her organs, including her brain and heart. In those days, such a catastrophe almost always resulted in death.

mulch for aesthetic purposes as rock and gravel come in a wide variety of colors and sizes. If instead you are looking to improve your soil structure than organic mulch is best. It will break down over time and add nutrients to your soil. Either way whether organic or inorganic mulch is used there are many benefits to mulching before winter. It will greatly reduce evaporation and control soil temperature fluctuations from freezing and thawing, and protect shallow rooted plants from frost damage.

MULCHING OUR GARDEN

C

ooler weather is on the way and it won’t be long before our gardens are asleep for the winter and their roots are hibernating amongst frozen soil. So when should we mulch? Should we mulch before the soil freezes or after the soil freezes? How deep should we mulch? Is it best to use organic or inorganic mulch? Of course like most things it depends on what your goal is. Once you understand the different uses for each kind of mulch you can determine which kind is best for you. All of your mulching options can be found in two categories. There are organic mulches like wood, straw, leaves, and grass clippings. Or there are inorganic mulches like gravel, fabric, or rock. If you’re looking for mulch that won’t blow away and have no reason to improve your soil, than using one or a combination of inorganic mulches might make the most sense. This is also a great choice if you’re looking to add

When you’ve chosen your mulch then you can apply it at a depth of three to four inches. Remember that it is best to keep any kind of mulch at least six inches from the base of woody plants to help prevent rotting and/or rodent damage. Mulch can be applied anytime during the year. Just remember that if you apply the mulch earlier it will keep the soil warmer for longer and if you apply after the ground freezes it will help delay plants like bulbs from leafing out too early.

There are many benefits to mulching. In fact it is almost a necessity for our plants to survive our windy and often dry winters. So be sure to tuck in your plants for the winter and know that they are protected for a long sleep.

• On Oct. 18, 1767, Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon complete their survey of the boundary between the colonies of Pennsylvania and Maryland, as well as areas that would become Delaware and West Virginia. The Mason-Dixon line created the boundary at a northern latitude of 39 degrees and 43 minutes. • On Oct. 21, 1797, the USS Constitution, a 44-gun U.S. Navy frigate built to fight Barbary pirates off the coast of Tripoli, is launched in Boston Harbor. During the War of 1812, the Constitution won its enduring nickname “Old Ironsidesâ€? after witnesses claimed that the British shots merely bounced off the Constitution’s sides. • On Oct. 19, 1931, David Cornwell, later known as spy novelist John le Carre, is born in Poole, England. He published his first spy novel, “Call for the Dead,â€? in 1961. The novel, like his second, “A Murder of Qualityâ€? (1962), featured spy George Smiley. • On Oct. 15, 1946, Herman Goering, commander in chief of the Luftwaffe and head

of the Gestapo, dies by his own hand. He was found guilty at Nuremberg and committed suicide by swallowing a cyanide tablet he had hidden from his guards. • On Oct. 20, 1968, 21-year-old Oregonian Dick Fosbury wins gold medal and sets an Olympic record when he high-jumps 7 feet, 4 1/4 inches at the Mexico City Games. It was the international debut of Fosbury’s unique jumping style, known as the “Fosbury Flop,â€? which, according to one journalist, “looked like a guy falling off the back of a truck.â€? • On Oct. 17, 1973, the Arab-dominated Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) announces a decision to cut oil exports to the United States. In December, a full oil embargo was imposed, prompting a serious energy crisis and gasoline rationing in the United States. • On Oct. 16, 1987, 18-month-old Jessica McClure is rescued after being trapped for 58 hours in an abandoned water well in Midland, Texas. McClure had fallen through the 8-inch-wide opening of an abandoned well in the backyard of her aunt’s home day-care center. After dropping about 22 feet into the well, the little girl became stuck. A BREAKFAST WORTH GETTING UP FOR

B

reakfast is the most important meal of the day, and often the most neglected. It’s important that you eat a nutritious morning meal no later than an hour after waking up. A healthy breakfast allows the mind and body to work well throughout the day. Breakfast also is important for creating healthy eating habits, general health, weight control, greater concentration and productivity, and maintaining hormone levels and blood sugar. Breakfast will speed up metabolism and help you burn more calories throughout the day. Most people who skip breakfast eat more during the day. If you start the day with an empty stomach, blood-sugar levels will be lower. As a result, during the day you’ll need “instant” sugar, usually a doughnut, chocolate, pasta or other unhealthy choice. How do you find the time to prepare and eat breakfast every morning? Try getting up 15 minutes earlier. Or, prepare your breakfast the night before! This recipe for Baked Banana Oatmeal with Walnuts and Raisins is a healthy and delicious solution to your morning breakfast dilemma. Best of all, it keeps well when refrigerated and can be packaged in re-sealable containers and re-heated at work, if necessary.

BAKED BANANA OATMEAL WITH WALNUTS AND RAISINS 2 tablespoons plus 1 teaspoon of unsalted butter or coconut oil, melted and cooled slightly 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats 1/4 cup chopped walnuts or pecans, lightly toasted, divided 1/2 teaspoon baking powder 3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg 1/4 teaspoon salt 1 tablespoon brown sugar 1/4 cup maple syrup or maple-flavored agave syrup 1 cup milk, organic soymilk, or almond milk

GLUTEN FREE - Pizza, Pasta, Sauces Try Our Specials Tuesday through Thursday!

1 large egg, lightly beaten 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 2-3 ripe bananas, peeled and sliced 1/2inch thick 1 cup raisins, cranberries or craisins 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon 1 1/2 cups milk, organic soymilk or almond milk

Tuesday - Friday 5 - 9 pm • Saturday 11:30 am - 9 pm 4 Hwy. 105 • Palmer Lake 719-481-3244 • website: http://www.bellapanini.com

1. Preheat oven to 375 F. 2. Lightly grease a 2-quart baking dish with 1 teaspoon of butter or oil. In a medium bowl, combine rolled oats, half of the nuts, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt and brown sugar. Stir with a fork to combine. In a liquid measuring cup, combine the maple or agave syrup, 1 cup milk, egg, butter or oil, and vanilla. 3. Spread the sliced bananas in a single layer over the bottom of the baking dish. Top with half of the raisins or cranberries. Sprinkle the dry oat mixture over the fruit in an even layer. 4. Pour liquid ingredients evenly over the oats. Sprinkle remaining nuts and berries over top. Bake 35-40 minutes, until top is browned and oats have set. Let cool 10 minutes before serving. 5. Combine cinnamon with 1 1/2 cups milk. Heat until warm, about 2 minutes. Serve oatmeal topped with warm cinnamon-almond milk. Cover and refrigerate leftover oatmeal. 6. To reheat, place a serving of the oatmeal into a bowl. Mix cinnamon with almond milk and pour it over oatmeal. Heat oatmeal and milk on high in the microwave until the oatmeal and milk are warm, about 2 to 3 minutes.

New DVD Releases for Week of October 15, 2012 PICKS OF THE WEEK “Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted” (PG) -- The talking animals of the Madagascar series are back on a quest to get to their home at the zoo. Alex the lion (Ben Stiller), Marty the zebra (Chris Rock), King Julien the lemur (Sacha Baron Cohen) and all the rest are still on for this third installment. This time, the animals find themselves lost in Europe and decide to join a traveling circus as a means of transportation. It’s the third movie in a series that wasn’t

the most original or exciting, and the creators know it. “Madagascar 3” dials up the pace to keep things interesting. Overall, it’s a good sequel, even if it might be too fast and frenetic for some. “Moonrise Kingdom” (PG-13) -- An oddly earnest 12-year-old boy (Jared Gilman) and an equally stiff young girl hatch a scheme to run away together and live off the land for a while. The boy is in a Boy Scouts kind of group, and his scoutmaster (Ed Norton) and a local policeman (Bruce Willis) are on the case to bring in the missing kids. The movie is a love story between two adolescents, but it’s not a movie most adolescents would enjoy. Director Wes Anderson’s trademark whimsical, awkward-but-plausible fingerprints are everywhere. The story is set on a quirky, remote-island town in New England in 1965. Anderson’s attention to detail

is evident in every shot, and all of those details can actually pull you into this oddly appealing universe. “Chernobyl Diaries” (R) -- A gang of carefree young people decide to steer their vacation into the extreme. They hire a tour guide to take them into Pripyat, the Ukrainian city next to the site of the Chernobyl nuclear meltdown of 1986. At first they love the spooky abandoned apartment buildings and old nuclear facilities. Of course, when things get dark, their van won’t start and it’s clear they’re not alone, their joy turns to terror. Director Oren Peli (creator of “Paranormal Activity) just doesn’t deliver the suspense, and the horror falls flat.

latest R-rated gross-out comedy on the heels of “Jack and Jill” (the one where Sandler plays his female twin) is so lame that it seems like Sandler has a grudge against people who like comedy and haven’t liked him for the past decade or so. What’s worse, “That’s My Boy” is a disgustingly unfunny comedy that co-stars Andy Samberg, a rising star who has at least 10 years of being funny left before he morphs into the next Sandler.

THE MONSTER BASH: The Legend of Linus Bardamas PART 3

By Nicholas Yanez

T

he tunnels got thinner; they were after all made for children. Linus was behind Humgaurd, it was pitch black and no one could see much of anything. The noises were getting louder too. With each crumbling growl the Trows knew their home was being buried. In addition, the sinking feeling of claustrophobia set in for many. As Linus crawled forward he held back the tears. Others weren’t as successful; everyone could hear their cries. Humgaurd whispered back to Linus, “I think we’re close brother”. Relief, if only a little, set in. Once the Trows were home, they could quickly game plan. Perhaps they could dig into the earth deeper, delaying the inevitable destruction of their underground village. Linus was looking forward when out of nowhere, Humgaurd was gone. He stopped. “Humgaurd?” he whispered. Linus crawled a foot forward and felt his body shift suddenly. He fell about six feet and landed on the cold rock. They were home. Humgaurd stood up and wiped the dirt off his knees, “wasn’t expecting a drop off” he said with a smile. Linus smiled back and yelled back up to the tunnels “there’s a drop off of about six feet, be aware”. As the others came tumbling out of the hole, Linus and Humgaurd began dividing everyone into groups. Most would dig, hoping to build a deep, heavily structured cave that the Norwegian Monsters couldn’t bury. A few would gather belongings necessary to

survive with the remaining two put on watch. Humgaurd and his friend Germurt would be the watchmen. Three hours had passed. The noises had grown louder every minute, but due to the fact that everyone was still alive, the Trows realized that the Monsters must be making slow progress. They were after all very architecturally sound tunnels, built to survive when the Earth quakes. Progress on the back-up tunnels was going well too. With over a hundred diggers, growth was fast. They had already gone over 1,000 feet. The tunnels were thin enough so that they could hardly collapse. In addition, the Trows had weaved the caves back and forth, giving it extra resistance. It would take days to crush these tunnels; hopefully enough time to create a real plan. Linus felt confident. He turned to Humgaurd and yelled out “I think we’re going to-“-CRASH! The entire front end of the tunnel collapsed claiming Humgaurd and Germurt in an instant. They were buried; probably dead, but there was no way to be sure. There was also no time to check. Linus turned; he didn’t have time to cry. The hand of one of the Monsters was visible, and it was fishing for Trow flesh. Linus ran towards the new tunnels with everyone else. It was time to form a plan. If you have an Italian recipe that includes fall vegetables, incorporates the idea of fall harvest or is simply the best Italian comfort food you can think of, then this recipe contest is made to order.

14

Whether it’s a signature recipe for an appetizer, entrée, soup, pizza or even dessert, local and regional cooks are invited to submit their favorite Italian creation today. The recipe contest will be judged by Chris and Kerri Bohler, co-owners of The Villa Palmer Lake. If selected, it will be one of the featured specialty dishes at The Villa for the month of November, crediting the winner(s) as the creator. “This is an exciting opportunity for local cooks to put a personal or updated spin on a classic Italian favorite, to offer up special Italian dishes that include the use of harvest vegetables, fruits or wines, or even to send in their favorite gourmet ‘mac and cheese’ rendition,” noted Kerri Bohler. “Italian restaurants are often family ventures by nature and The Villa Palmer Lake is no exception. But we think of our community as our extended family as well, and invite all cooks both in our immediate area and in the general region to submit their favorite Italian recipes for entrees, appetizers, pizza and even dessert. We would enjoy the opportunity to cook your favorite Italian food for you and for the community of our customers.” ~ Chris Bohler, Chef and Co-Owner, The Villa Palmer Lake. Winners will receive a free dinner for four at The Villa, at which The Villa Palmer Lake culinary team will make the winner’s dish for the winner and up to three guests, plus their choice of appetizer and dessert. All recipes must be submitted by October 31, 2012, in order to be considered. All entrants should include their full name, e-mail address, telephone contact information (day and evening) and mailing address as a part of their entry. A photo of each submitted recipe is welcome, although not required. Recipe entries should be submitted to kerri@thevillapalmerlake.com. However, if entrants do not have access to the Internet, they can print their recipe along with their personal information and mail to: The Villa Palmer Lake, PO Box 163, Palmer Lake, CO 80133. Mail-in entries must be postmarked by October 25, 2012 and received by October 31, 2012 in order to be considered. Multiple winners may be selected depending on the number and variety of recipes entered. ACUPUNCTURE HELPS PERK UP OLD DOG DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’m writing in response to your column on alternative treatments for pets. A vet I used to work for studied acupuncture for pets. She had an old dog with arthritis, and he was really grumpy because he was in so much pain. The vet did acupuncture on him, and within a few weeks he was running around and playing with the puppies. Total change in that dog. Dogs can’t fake it! Made a believer out of me! -- Mrs. J., via email DEAR MRS. J: Thank you for the anecdote! This idea could hold true for treatment of pets, as well. I think it’s important to consult your pet’s veterinarian for any illness or injury -- physical or emotional -- and make sure your pet gets conventional treatment. But alternative therapies can provide additional benefits.

Do they really work? I don’t know. However, speaking with a medical doctor a few years ago about alternative treatments, she said that since most alternative treatments have fewto-no side effects, and her (human) patients felt better after having them, she felt that they were a positive benefit that could boost the effectiveness of more conventional Western medicine.

LEARN TO LOVE By Ron Ross

Are you a good lover?

eing a good lover doesn’t mean you’re an expert in the bedroom; it means you’re an expert at relationships. To find out if you’re a good lover, take the following test. Circle the appropriate answer to each question: Y=Yes, NW = Needs Work.

It is easy for me to share my feelings. Y – NW I am patient when things aren’t go- I am thoughtful for others. It is easy ing my way. I don’t blow up often. for me to give compliments. Y – NW I’m steady and reliable. Y – NW I am kind to others. I like to do little I am gentle and respectful to others. things to please others, and I don’t Y – NW expect anything in return. Y – NW It is easy for me to forgive others I am pretty much content with whom when they hurt me. Y – NW I am and what I have. I don’t envy the possessions or achievements of I am good at encouraging others. Y – NW others. Y – NW I am modest. Some of what I have is better than what others have, however, I do not boast about it. Y – NW

I am able to overlook the mistakes of others. I don’t have a little private book somewhere so I can keep a record of the bad things people do to me. Y – NW

I am humble. I am not pompous and self-righteous. Y – NW I love the truth and hate evil. Y – NW I am able to honor others. When someone is more successful than I I protect the people I love. Y – NW am, I can be happy for them and let them know. Y – NW I am a trusting person. Y – NW

It is easy for me to say, “I love you.” Y – NW I am open to suggestions on how to improve myself and my relationships. Y – NW So, how’d you do? Plenty of Ys or were there more NWs than you wanted? Did you notice the test had nothing to do with your mate, your children or your parents? It had to do with you. Here’s why: your ability to love does not depend on the lovability of others, it depends solely upon you. Your “Kick in the Pants” for this week is this: Learn to love. Success and real happiness in life begins with the way you love others. It is one of the most important building blocks in all of life. Why? Because in every situation – love never fails!

Lesser Known Facts about Google, 'The Search Engine King' Series Series 2, 2, Article 7 8

In 1997, Google's prototype was named "BackRub". The name 'Google' was an accident. A spelling mistake made by the original founders who thought they were going for 'Googol'. Google.com - The domain was registered on September 15, 1997. Google celebrates Halloween every year in the office. The funniest dress-up was lava lamp in 2007. The prime reason the Google home page is so bare is due to the fact that the founders didn't know HTML and just wanted a quick interface. In the beginning, there was no submit button so users had to hit the Return key to get Google to work. Due to the sparseness of the homepage, in early user tests people would just sit looking at the screen. After a minute of nothingness, the tester intervened and asked 'What's up?' to which they replied "We are waiting for the rest of it". To solve that particular problem the Google Copyright message was inserted to act as a crude end of page marker. One of the biggest leap in search usage came about when Google introduced their much improved spell checker giving birth to the "Did you mean…" feature. This instantly doubled their traffic. The infamous "I feel lucky" is nearly never used. However, in trials it was found that removing it would somehow reduce the Google experience. Users wanted it kept. It was a comfort button. I'm Feeling Lucky Costs Google $110 Million a Year. There are no restrictions on Googler's dress code in the office, in which pajama, ugly sweater and even super hero costume were on the records. Google started off its first operations in a rented Garage. Gmail was used internally for nearly 2 years prior to launch to the public. They discovered there was approximately 6 types of email users, and Gmail has been designed to accommodate these 6. Google publishes variety of logos commemorating holidays and events. The first one on the books being a self-made "Burning Man" logo by the founders themselves. Employees are encouraged to use 20% of their time working on their own projects. Google News is an example of a project that grew from this working model.

Google products appear in 117 type of languages, including 5 "fake" languages like Elmer Fudd and Swedish Chef. Spanish, German, French and Japanese are the most used search language besides English. Google won the prestigious award for Technical Achievement in 2000. In the nominees list there were no search engines at all. Thinking of working in Google? Well, think again if you can't answer their mysterious and challenging puzzles. Google setup a billboard in Silicon Valley by 2004, stating "First 10 digit prime in consecutive digits of e". Geeks who got the hint would have visited www.7427466391.com (which is not available now) with further puzzles to be solved before they were recruited. Google's first ever April Fool's joke went online on April 1st, 2000 and was called "MentalPlex" Google's ability to read your mind. The Google logo was never centered (as it appears today). It only appeared centered in March 2001. It was aligned to the left earlier. Google's first employee is Craig Silverstein. Craig is the man behind "exact search" (where you get pages containing the exact search term within quotes.) In 1999, when Google moved to their Palo Alto office, there were only 19 employees in the company. Today there are 0ver 2,700. It will take Google 300 years to put the entire world's information online. Google reckons only 10% of the world's information is online. Google believes up to 20% of the online content changes every month. According to Google, 20-25% of the search queries are unique. The index of Google is 3 times larger than Yahoo's index or MSN's index. In Google, thousands of computers are involved in processing a single search query. 70% of Google engineers are working on search-related problems. Google uses over 300 factors to rank websites. Google uses over 200 signals for Pagerank. Google has the largest network of translators in the world. "Teaching is like learning again". Since 2000, Google encourage teaching and learning activities among its employees, from the subject of learning Chinese to Ulysses from Greek mythology. Source: techchunks

LIVING GOD’S GIFTS bringing Christ into your financial life

INVESTING FROM A BIBLICAL PERSPECTIVE

by Chuck Maher, CFP®

...BRING CHRIST INTO OUR FINANCIAL LIVES

ARE YOUR SAVINGS READY TO RETIRE?

T

oo many Americans are facing a retirement crisis. As they are approaching their retirement years many pre-retires are finding that, financially, they are woefully underprepared to retire. For whatever reason, they simply have not been able to set aside enough money to replace the income necessary to continue their current lifestyle. If you are finding yourself in a similar situation here are some steps you can take to help move you closer to secure retirement. Reduce Spending Take a look at where you are spending money now and eliminate all unnecessary expenditures. There are many expenses that you have limited or no control over, but there are many expenses over which you have complete control. Make the time to go through those discretionary expenses and decide what really is important and eliminate the rest. Increase Savings With the money you were able to save by reducing your spending – invest. Work to increase your savings and investing by 2-3% every year, even more

as your wages increase. Remember to, if your employer provides matching contributions in your 401(k) make sure you are taking full advantage of it.

CHUCK MAHER CFP

Postpone Retirement By waiting to retire you increase the amount of time you have to save and for your investments to grow. You also have reduced the number of year your investments will need to provide income. There is also the added benefit of higher Social Security income. After age 66, for every year you delay claiming benefits, your monthly benefit will increase by 8%. Insure Your Income Running out of money is arguably the greatest risk facing retirees. With the purchase of an annuity, either deferred or immediate, you can insure that you will have an income guaranteed for life. In today’s marketplace many annuities can produce an income greater than that of a certificate of deposit, bonds or dividends. Just remember that annuities are not FDIC insured and that the income generated is guaranteed by the claims paying ability of the issuing insurance company.

age. The good news is that for most people it is not too late prepare for a successful retirement. By taking action now you can make your retirement a reality and a comfortable one at that. “The plans of the diligent are sure of profit, but all rash haste leads certainly to poverty.” Proverbs 21:5

Like postponing retirement, getting a part-time job in retirement reduces the amount of current income your investments need to provide. It also reduces the total amount of savings and investment you will need to secure your retirement. However, a part-time job can have adverse consequences on your Social Security benefits if you start benefits prior to your full retirement
