discovered a few thousand years earlier) lead to combining copper and tin to produce a stronger product – bronze.

The possibility of creating systems able to handle much heavier loads thanks to stronger components was no longer just a pipe-dream.

In September, Snippetz took a look at skyscrapers and naturally elevators came on our radar. But what’s the deal with elevators anyway? How did someone decide that a little metal box that moved people from floor to floor was even possible? Well, here’s how.

It wasn’t until between 2500 and 1000 B.C. that iron came on the scene in the Middle East, providing yet another milestone in the development of structures such as elevators.

DEVELOPING THE TECHNOLOGY

Modern elevators are constructed using steel which was discovered in India but through the years the crucible steel technique was lost. In 1740, Benjamin Huntsman of England rediscovered the technique and developed Sheffield steel.

They don’t exactly qualify as the elevators we know and love today, but as far back as 2900 B.C., it is theorized that primitive lifting mechanisms were used to build structures such as the Great Pyramid of Giza.

WHO DEVELOPED THE MODERN ELEVATOR?

Around 236 B.C., the Greeks threw their hat into the ring with the development of the Archimedean screw, invented by none other than mathematician, physicist and inventor Archimedes. The device utilized a crank to lift water and other light materials to otherwise unreachable heights.

Aside from the 19th century systems developed for hauling materials in factories, mines or warehouses, an “ascending room” designed to take paying tourists to a platform above London was developed by two architects, Burton and Hormer in 1823.

In 100 B.C., teams of men powered a crane with a block and tackle device that was used to lift the materials used to build the Tomb of the Haterii in Rome.

While Otis didn’t invent the elevator, the braking systems used in modern elevators were his design. Those systems increased public confidence in the elevator and without them, it is unlikely that passengers would have climbed into the first public elevator in 1857. The elevator was installed by the Otis Elevator Company (owned by none other than Otis himself) in a fivestory department store owned by E.W. Haughtwhat & Company of Manhattan.

In 1880, German Werner von Siemens built the first electric elevator.

HOW DOES IT ALL WORK? At its core, an elevator is simply a compartment attached to a system that raises and lowers it. Naturally, there are many other elements such as safety devices and control mechanisms necessary to make a modern elevator run (and for passengers to feel safe enough to ride in them!).

There are two major elevator designs used currently: hydraulic elevators and roped elevators.

Hydraulic elevators Hydraulic elevators use a hydraulic ram to lift the car (the compartment you ride in). The ram is simply a fluiddriven piston mounted inside a cylinder that moves up and down to move the car. Typically, the fluid used is oil.

A pump, powered by an electric motor, forces the fluid from a holding tank into a pipe that leads to the cylinder. If the valve is open, the fluid will run the system taking the path of least resistance and head back to the tank. But if the valve is closed, the fluid can’t move back into the tank and instead is forced into the cylinder, causing it to fill and push the piston upward, making the el-

In order to keep the car from rising past the floor the passenger wants, a control system sends a signal to the motor to gradually shut off the pump, decreasing the flow of fluid into the cylinder.

The fluid already in the cylinder can’t get out, but no more is coming in so the piston and the car come to a stop.

The weight of the piston and the car together help the system work in reverse so that the car can move back down the elevator shaft. The valve is opened by a solenoid switch so that the fluid can move back into the tank and piston and car descend. To keep everything from slamming into the floor, the control system closes the valve to cushion the landing.

Roped elevators In this most popular design, the elevator car is raised and lowered using traction steel ropes. The ropes are attached to the car and looped through a grooved pulley called a sheave. The sheave grips the ropes so when the sheave moves, the ropes move with it.

The sheave is powered by an electric motor so when the motor turns one way, the sheave raises the car. When it moves in the other direction, the sheave lowers the car.

The ropes are also connected to a counterweight that hangs on the other side of the sheave. The counterweight will perfectly balance with the elevator car when the car is about 40 percent full.

One engine of the bomber flew into the shaft and landed on the elevator car, causing the cable to snap and the car to fall. The car was slowed marginally by the safety devices but somehow both women inside the car survived.

NOW, ARE THEY SAFE?

Elevators are said to be safer than cars.

On average, 26 people die in elevators each year in the U.S. The same number of car deaths is reported every five hours. Most of the elevator-related injuries occur to the people who install and maintain them.

Aside from systems that monitor the speed of the elevator car to determine if it’s moving too fast, elevators are equipped with other safety backups.

They include: electromagnetic brakes; automatic braking systems at the top and bottom of the shaft; and (if all else fails) a heavy-duty shock absorber system at the bottom of the shaft, just in case.

OTHER FUN ELEVATOR FACTS

Contrary to what movies may have you believe, the only known occurrence of an elevator car falling due to a snapped cable (aside from a fire or structural

GOUT DIET NOT TOO RESTRICTIVE DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Will you give me information on the low-purine diet for gout? -- C.J. ANSWER: Years ago, before effective gout medicines were available, diet was the major treatment for gout. Now, with modern medicines, diet doesn’t play such a big role.

Elevated blood uric acid sets the stage for a gout attack. Uric acid infiltrates joints as needle-shaped crystals. Most uric acid comes from the recycling of body cells, a daily process. Only a small amount comes from food. It’s still wise for gout patients to take it easy on foods that are high in purines, but they don’t have to be as strict about diet as former patients had to be.

Purines are the substances that produce uric acid.

Gout patients ought to scale back a bit on meat and fish. Anchovies, organ meats like liver and sweetbreads, and gravies have lots of purines in them, and should be taken only once in a while, if at all. Patients need to watch the amount of alcohol they drink. Beer, in particular, often triggers a gout attack. High-fructose corn syrup and table sugar ought to be used in moderation. Soft drinks have a large amount of high-fructose corn syrup in them. These are the only foods that bear some watching.

Milk and other dairy products lessen the chance of gout attacks. All fruits and vegetables can be eaten without any restriction.

Weight loss is important for overweight gout patients. That’s about all you need to know about the low-purine diet for gout.

T

his time of year not everyone’s thoughts are on gardening. Well, actually our thoughts always are, but that’s just an occupational hazard! For everyone else you may still be planting bulbs and doing fall clean up, but gardening probably isn’t on the forefront of your mind like it often is in the spring and summer. What might be on your mind however, at least when you walk outside, is just how beautiful our fall landscape is. The deep oranges, reds, purple and gold blend and pop.

Even the greens and blues look deeper and more vibrant. So even though you may not be in full blown planting mode right now, later in the spring when you are, you might ask; what was that deep red tree I saw all over town in the fall?

Or what was that incredible purple or vibrant orange that paired so well with that Blue Spruce? I actually prefer planting in the fall, but the selection is usually better in the spring. Either way it might be worth doing a little homework now to find out the names of the ones you want in your own yard. After all as Albert Camus put it “autumn is a second spring when every leaf is a flower.”

nal the plants to stop producing chlorophyll. Chlorophyll is what makes the leaves green. After the production of chlorophyll slows then other pigments already in the leaves become visible.

That is how we get these awesome transformations of color. One way you might find out what that tree, shrub or perennial is that you just can’t stop marveling at is to take a leaf that has already fallen to have it identified. Or if it’s on someone else’s property ask if you can pick one and maybe the owner could tell you themselves what it is. You could also go into some local nurseries and see what they have that’s turning colors right now. Then you have the name right there on the tag for you. Another option would be the good old internet. A potential problem with this option is you may fall in love with a beautiful tree just to find out it doesn’t grow here!

So, you’ve got to clean up those fallen leaves eventually. Here’s a few ideas to make the task somewhat easier.

Obviously Colorado trees can hold their own when it comes to fall color. Some popular choices that you might be seeing right now include the Autumn Blaze Maple, this one and varieties closely related are often the brilliant eye catching red we see around town. Another is the Autumn Purple Ash; this tree becomes a mixture of everything from orangered to purple. This one is my personal favorite. And the intense gold we see might be one of many varieties of Green Ash or, of course, our beloved Aspen.

As far as shrubs go I’m often asked about Burning Bush, its name kind of gives the color away! Personally I am very fond of the glossy orange-red that Aronia turns this time of year. The list of course goes on and on but I think I will be running out of room soon!

A: Raking leaves can be a tedious task, and gets exhausting when dealing with a large yard with lots of trees. During the fall season, a homeowner could wind up raking the yard at least once a week.

Unfortunately, leaving those leaves to pile up will wreak havoc on your lawn.

First, the coating of leaves prevents air and sun from reaching grass directly, but lets rainwater trickle down, creating a harsh environment for grass. Second, leaves are filled with alkaline compounds that can damage the grass. These factors make leaves a great mulch ingredient, because you typically put mulch where you don’t want grass or weeds to grow.

So take this as a great excuse to take an even deeper look at the beautiful trees and shrubs that already catch your eye when you drive by. Then by next year they can catch your eye in your own yard.

• Borrow or rent a leaf blower to tackle larger areas with a moderate to heavy coating of leaves. Carefully blow the leaves into rough piles around the lawn. ¥ Use your rake to finish a large leaf cleanup job: pile the leaves closer together, or use the rake to shift leaves into a bag or wheelbarrow for disposal elsewhere.

• Add leaves to your compost pile. Fall is a favorite time for homeowners who keep compost piles because leaves add bulk to their compost and can help balance nutrients and acidity or alkalinity if used in the right amounts.

HOME TIP: Watch out for that noisy leaf blower. Be aware of any local noise ordinances before using a leaf blower and try to avoid using it before 10 a.m. most days. Your neighbors will thank you.

hen searching for the perfect present for a new mother, the gift of your time is always appreciated. Preparing a meal for the family, presenting it in a pretty casserole dish that she can keep, and including the recipe with the casserole makes a great gift and keepsake for the new mother.

A casserole describes both the container and the contents. Casseroles have been prepared since the earliest times and can be a savory or sweet dish. Casseroles became popular in America during the Depression and grew in popularity into the 1940s. Then and now, in times of economic hardship, a casserole is the perfect way to feed a family on a budget.

In the 1950s, convenience was the main reason for the continuing popularity of casseroles. Modern cooks liked the ease of opening a few cans and packages to create a meal. When I was a new bride and college student in 1975, casseroles were the perfect remedy for my woefully limited cooking skills and lack of time.

A casserole is an easy way to create a budget-friendly meal, or to stock my freezer with crowd-pleasing dishes that can be reheated in the microwave. It’s also the perfect meal and gift for a new mother and her family.

This recipe for Bean and Cheese Tortilla Casserole freezes well, can be increased to feed more people fairly easily, or transformed from a vegetarian dish to include the meat of your choice.

BEAN AND CHEESE TORTILLA CASSEROLE You can add cooked and crumbled ground meat or shredded chicken to this vegetarian casserole, if desired. Just place the meat on top of the bean sauce and continue with the directions.

3 cans pinto beans, rinsed and drained 1 tablespoon olive oil 3/4 cup chopped onion 1 teaspoon minced garlic

1. Preheat the oven to 350 F. 2. In a microwave-safe bowl, combine olive oil, onion, garlic, salt and pepper, and heat on high for 4 minutes until the onion is soft.

3. Using food processor or blender, combine onion mixture, beans, broth, salsa, chili powder, cumin and oregano together until smooth. Pour bean mixture back into a bowl and microwave on high for 6 to 7 minutes, or until the beans are hot.

4. Place about 1/2 cup of the bean sauce into the bottom of an 8 to 9-inch square baking pan or casserole dish. Place 4 of the tortillas, with the sides overlapping, on top of the bean sauce. Sprinkle with the shredded cheese. Cover with another 1/2 cup of the bean sauce. Place another 4 tortillas, with sides overlapping, on the bean sauce.

Sprinkle with the shredded cheese. Repeat bean sauce, tortillas and finish with cheese layer. Bake until the cheese is melted about 10 to 15 minutes. To serve, drizzle with Mexican sour cream or plain Greek yogurt and chopped cilantro, if desired. Serves 4.

by Matthew McConaughy; he makes good money, and he’s never at a loss for company. Mike also is aware that he won’t be young and chiseled forever, and this is where the drama comes in. Beyond the indulgence, Mike knows he has other dreams

to follow.

The movie straddles the line between bachelorette party and mainstream character drama. Just when you get used to the story moving forward a bit, there’s a break for some more dancing. The story is drawn from Tatum’s own story; the Hollywood actor paid his bills by stripping before he hit it big.

“Seeking a Friend for the End of the World” (R) -- A meteor is headed for the Earth and mankind’s destruction is assured.

Dodge (Steve Carell) wants to see a longlost love one more time. His neighbor, Penny (Keira Knightley), wants to get on a plane to see her family in the UK. That’s the premise for this heartwarming comedy about two people who meet and go on a road trip together just before the end of the world.

There’s all kinds of odd and funny characters to meet when the apocalypse looms.

While some of jokes seem obligatory, the relationship between the two main characters is rather unique. Maybe Carell wallows too much, and Knightley might be too cute, but the story that brings their characters together is less predictable.

“Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Witness Protection” (PG-13) -- Eugene Levy is a Wall Street CFO who discovers that his company is actually a Ponzi scheme set up by the mob, and that he’s the fall guy. The prosecutor for the case, Brian (Tyler Perry), puts the quirky mogul and his overprivileged family where he thinks they’ll be safest -his aunt Madea’s house (Madea being Perry’s best-known character). The rest fills in as these things typically do. Madea’s oneliners are read loud and enthusiastically.

“Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter” (R) -- Based on a satirical history novel of the same name, this movie delivers just what it promises. A young Abe Lincoln

loses his mother to vampires. When he grows up, not only is he the 16th president of the United States, he’s also the nation’s most vigilant slayer of the undead. The movie takes itself a bit seriously, but not seriously enough to have anything to say.

The action is over-the-top. The visual style is cool. Still, this one probably won’t stick with you long after it’s over.

Can you help? -- Claire W., Akron, Ohio DEAR CLAIRE: Some dogs are a bit more difficult to house train than others, but don’t give up. First, however, stop rubbing Genie’s nose in her puddle. Dogs’ attention spans are pretty short, and trying to punish her long after the act won’t help, and in fact can set her training way back.

L

inus and the others dug vigorously.

Time was taking its toll and the Norwegian Monsters were gaining ground. The thumping of fallen rock sank deeper in the ears of every Trow. You could hear the echo of Trow tears through the small caves they had built. Families were holding each other close. The digging slowed, as everyone was choosing to be with a loved one at the time. Linus didn’t really have anyone; he just kept on digging. Then suddenly, like the sun clearing a storm in the spring time, there was nothing. No noises of any kind.

The thumping had stopped. The shaking had stopped. Linus stopped digging. He looked around thinking about the mess they had found themselves in. The eye of the storm, he thought.

In those last few seconds, the ones we make so much of, Linus didn’t see his entire life flash before his eyes. He only saw the families of those he neighbored. And as the tunnels he’d worked so hard to built came caving in on him and his people, Linus felt regret.

You see, it had been almost six years to the day. The last time the night rose without any light Linus Bardamas led the Trow on their most grand adventure. The three-hundred year war between them and the Norwegian Monsters would come to an epic conclusion, or so they thought. They sailed across the sea to capture the Monsters leader. They sacrificed him in the night time. For six years, they lived in peace. Yes, the Trow thought they had gotten away with the kidnapping and execution of a Norwegian

Monster; they hadn’t.

The Norwegians had come for their revenge.

They buried the tunnels, effectively eliminating the entire race of Trow. Linus Bardamas was dead. They had finally claimed their revenge. “Whew, let’s go home” said one, exhausted; and so they went…

October 27th is the anniversary of what the Norwegians came to call ‘The Monster Bash’ (most likely because of their bashing in of the tunnels). Pinz will celebrate this forgotten holiday Saturday, on the 1000th anniversary, combining the events with Halloween. There will be Live Music on the Lanes, a Costume Contest at Midnight (with cash prizes!), a Shock Top Pumpkin Carving Competition, Drink Specials, Bowling, Giveaways, and more! So we need to be celebrating the accomplishments of their kind.

And yes, Linus Bardamas was a hero - to his people. It’s all a matter of perspective folks; every civilization has its rise and fall. The Trow had their time and it ended. Don’t let it haunt you.

JUNK YOUR JEALOUSY

here are two kinds of jealousy.

One kind is illustrated by the late comedian Rodney Dangerfield’s line, “My wife’s jealousy is getting ridiculous. The other day she looked at my calendar and wanted to know who May was.” This kind of jealousy is the desire to keep what you have. It is a combination of fear and anger: fear of losing something and anger that someone is moving in on something or someone that you think belongs to you.

The other kind of jealousy is the resentment you have when you see a rival or someone you love gain sig-

nificant success or advantage. You know what I’m talking about, right?

It’s what you feel when the jerk in the next office gets the promotion and you don’t; or when your brother-inlaw strikes it rich with some stupid business idea.

– Jealousy makes you look and sound ugly. Have you ever seen anyone’s face brighten up with a beautiful smile while they are expressing their bitter feelings about another’s success? No you haven’t. When you express your resentment toward another person’s good fortune your face screws up, your eyes narrow and you look repulsive and sound nasty, no matter how good-looking you may be.

So what to do about jealousy? Three things: First of all, acknowledge it.

Talk about it with a confident – and maybe even with the person you are jealous of.

Second, love yourself. Approve of who you are and where you are in life. If your friend’s success reveals areas for you to improve, fine! Make positive changes to become a better you. But don’t do it to compete with your rival, do it to bless and love yourself.

Third, bless the one having the success you desire. Be joyful in their success – and tell them with authentic words of blessings.

This week’s swift kick in the pants – learn to be happy with who you are and what you have and be happy for the other person’s success. In short, junk your jealousy, regain your selfesteem and you’ll look better, feel better and you’ll be a better person.

group. You need this for your business, brand or key product to have a presence. You can run promotions, ask questions and solicit feedback from your customers. Oreo, the cookie, has a Facebook page with 27,000,000 Likes. People visit this page and make comments on how they feel. (Yes, I know. It is a just a cookie, for Pete's sake.)

Twitter - for your company or

brand. You can test products, promote products, discuss industry trends, and connect with potential buyers. Search engines are recognizing Twitter and real time data so Twitter cannot be ignored.

Pinterest - This is the fastest

growing site, so jump on it. Yes, it looks like a bunch of bored teenagers got together and put up pictures. It is also a viral magnet.

Pinterest is growing fast, only behind Facebook and Twitter.

According to Ken Barber of the Denver Business Journal (Aug 12, 2012) a PriceGrabber.com study showed that 21 percent of Pinterest users purchased directly from Pinterest.com, and their average order value was more than double that of Facebook-driven sales.

BANK PILE ON FEES

B

ecause of the new banking laws that limit how much banks can charge retailers, user fees have continued to rise as banks have hustled to find other ways to prop up their income.

The recent 15th annual survey by Bankrate shows that the average monthly fee is now in the range of $5.50 -- up 25 percent in a year -- for accounts that don’t pay interest. For accounts that do pay interest (averaging 0.05 percent), that amount is more than $14.

ATM fees also are up, averaging $1.57 (charged by your own bank) if you make a withdrawal at a bank not your own. The bank that you withdraw from will charge an average of $3.50 if you don’t have an account there.

Overdraft charges now average $31.

Non-sufficient funds charges are all in the $30 range across the country, except for two states.

There are ways to get around being charged fees, but they aren’t for everyone. Setting up direct deposit is one way, but not everyone works for a company that offers to pay electronically. Another way is to agree to keep a higher minimum balance at all times, although those minimums have continued to rise, in many cases to more than $6,000.

Banks are betting that you won’t abandon them despite higher fees, that you’ll decide it’s just easier to stay and hand over the money, no matter how high the charges go.

They have a point: If you change banks you might need to deal with new routines, the inconvenience of changing a direct deposit, new tellers who don’t know you, and more.

Perhaps you have a loan with an interest rate that’s directly tied to having an account (not a good idea, for obvious reasons).

Best bet: Per Bankrate, more than 70 percent of credit unions still have free checking. If your bank’s fees are continuing to climb, investigate a credit union near you. The “pain” of switching banks is only temporary.
