t’s that time of year again, when ghouls and goblins of all shapes and sizes wander the streets on Halloween night in search of tricks or treats. Among them, you’ll probably ďŹ nd a mummy or two. The process of mummiďŹ cation is enough to make your skin crawl, but the idea of a corpse wrapped in linen lurching around in your front yard might make you reconsider leaving your porch light on for trick-or-treating children. Snippetz digs in to ďŹ nd all about mummies and possibly shed some light on this ancient ritual for the dead.

THE EVOLUTION OF EGYPTIAN MUMMIFICATION
Mummies... Continued from Page 1
WHY, OH WHY, DID THEY MUMMIFY?
Mummification is just like any other activity in that it evolved into a better, more advanced and effective process through trial and error. In the beginning, it is said that Egyptian mummification came about by accident, when they buried their dead in the hot, dry desert sand. With no casket or similar type of container to provide the necessary environment for decomposition to occur, the bodies dried out and were preserved in a relatively life-like form.
Although mummification has taken place all over the world, both intentionally and unintentionally, most people think of the Egyptian variety. However, the first mummification rituals took place in northern Chile by the Chinchorro people. The process was drastically different from the Egyptian rituals, and the motivation was believed to be more for the families of the deceased. Evidence indicates the mummified bodies were kept as statues, possibly as a way to honor the memory of their loved one before it was buried.
Eventually the Egyptians became concerned about the state in which their dead were “living,” fearing that they were not comfortable just lying under a bunch of sand. They constructed boxes made of wicker (and eventually wooden boxes) to make the corpse more comfortable, but they soon came to realize that without the dehydrating properties of the dry, hot sand, decomposition occurred. Their loved ones became skeletons and that’s not what they wanted.
The Egyptians used mummification as a way to preserve the lifeless body in the most life-like way possible. The reason? Egyptians believed the mummified body was the home for the person’s spirit which is identified by three specific parts – the Ka, Ba and Akh. Each part of the spirit was equally important to the Egyptians. The Ka is said to be linked to the physical body of the person in life, thus it is linked to the corpse in death. If the corpse is destroyed, the Ka is destroyed…and that’s bad. For Egyptians, preserving the corpse ensured that the spirit, in its three parts, would live on. Without the corpse, there is no spirit and there is no life beyond death.
Through trial and error, the Egyptians eventually learned how to mimic the
preservation that the hot desert sand provided, giving them a way intentionally and effectively to preserve their dead. They realized that decomposition begins inside the body starting with the organs. In order to keep the organs from decomposing, they simply took them out. Egyptians also used natron, a natural salt found in the region to help dry up any moisture and preserve the body. This process is known as embalming.
THE EMBALMING PROCESS The embalming process is elaborate and gruesome, but a necessary evil when preserving a corpse. It involves the removal of the brain tissue through the nose; removal of the organs through a slit in the left side of the abdomen; and the removal of the lungs through a hole in the diaphragm. The organs were washed, coated in resin, wrapped in strips of linen and put into jars called canopic jars to allow them a safe passage to the world beyond. The Akh was said to go along for final judgment, then pass on to the afterlife. Mummies... Continued on Page 3

With the body void of all organs except the heart (in most cases), which was considered to be the center of a person’s emotions and thoughts, the body was washed and purified with palm wine. The embalmers stuffed the body with linen and incense, then covered it with natron powder to remove any remaining moisture. The body was left for anywhere between 30-45 days, then the stuffing was removed and replaced with resin-soaked linen and other materials to help it maintain its shape. Finally, it was sewn back up.
THAT’S A WRAP! Following embalming, bodies were wrapped in linen, usually beginning with the hands and feet. Each finger and toe was wrapped individually. The head, legs, arms and torso followed. The body was then wrapped entirely together. Throughout
the process, the embalmers said spells and placed protective amulets within the wrappings. Between each layer of wrapping, the linen was coated with a hot resin to help the wrapping stick together.
SIGNED, SEALED AND DELIVERED Following the wrapping of the mummy, the Egyptians attached a funerary mask over the face of the body. The mask could be either a likeness of the face of the deceased or the face of an Egyptian god. The idea was that the spirit would be able to identify the right body in the myriad tombs by finding the correct mask.

This explains why mummies were routinely buried with food; personal items of value, furniture and the like so that the deceased person would have access to all the creature comforts.
DON’T YOU CURSE AT ME! What would a tomb be without a curse to ward off raiders? These curses were inscribed on the outside of tombs for just that reason. A typical curse is said to read, “As for anybody who shall enter this tomb in his impurity, I shall wring his neck as a bird’s.” There may be something to this curse idea, especially when you consider Howard Carter and his excavation team from 1922. They unearthed King Tut-

The cause may be more biological than metaphysical, however. Mold spores from the food the mummies were often buried with could possibly have been disturbed when the tomb was opened. Raiders and excavators alike could have become sick or even died after breathing them in.
Probably more notable than that is Boris Karloff’s interpretation of the mummy in the 1923 Universal Pictures production of “The Mummy.” Never before had the jerky, staggering mummy been portrayed, but Karloff’s contribution to the image still reigns supreme.
HAPPY HALLOWEEN, MUMMY!
MUMMY FUN FACTS • If a mummy actually became reanimated, it wouldn’t be able to walk; its arms and legs are wrapped alongside its body.
While plenty of civilizations over time have been fascinated with mummies, it was only after a book called “The Mummy” was published in 1821 that the mummy became a fixture in horror stories.
• Roughly 4,000 square feet of linen was used in the typical wrapping of a

mummy. • The Egyptian embalmers didn’t preserve the brain, not really knowing its purpose, so they assumed it wasn’t needed in the world beyond. • The better your class ranking, the better mummification process a person got; if you were of a lower class, it’s likely that your organs wouldn’t have been preserved but rather left to liquefy inside the body cavity after the injection of an oil mixture. The mixture was drained from the body after several days, and voila, you have an empty abdomen!

t can be tempting to look for cheaper sources of prescriptions drugs, but going online to hunt for your drugs is not the answer. The risks of dealing with online pharmacies are serious. If you get a fake drug, it will contain the wrong ingredients, and they’ll likely be harmful to you. You might get a bad reaction that sends you to the hospital. DONOHUE: As a child, my mother made me drink eight glasses of water every day. She said water flushed out poisons. Does it? -- B.D. ANSWER: No, it doesn’t. The average, healthy person can let thirst be the guide to the need for fluid. All fluids count, not just water.
ANSWER: Alzheimer’s disease is the No. 1 cause of dementia. Dementias are illnesses that lead to progressive loss of mental function. With Alzheimer’s disease, memory loss is prominent, especially loss of memory for the recent past and a loss of the ability to retain new information in the memory bank. Alzheimer’s patients have great difficulty finding even simple words to express themselves. They become lost in familiar places. As the illness progresses, they find it difficult to perform simple tasks, like dressing themselves. Judgment becomes poor. In summer they might wear clothes suited for winter. Numbers lose all meaning to them. Frequently, they become confused and suspicious. They no longer recognize the faces of close family members. The brains of those with Alzheimer’s shrink because brain cells are lost. With microscopic examination of an Alzheimer’s brain, deposits of amyloid, a protein material, are seen. They look like lumps of lava from a volcano, and they presumably kill off brain cells and block communication between them. Tangles of another protein called tau also are scattered through the brain. What leads to the formation of these proteins is as yet unknown. No medicine cures Alzheimer’s disease, but some medicines slow its progress. Three medicines increase the brain’s

tor is that both the plants you brought inside and the plants that have been inside have slowed their growth due to the shorter days and cooler nights. This causes your soil to stay moist for much longer which creates the perfect breeding ground for fungus gnats seeing as they feed on fungi, algae and decaying roots.
FALL IS FOR FUNGUS GNATS Have you noticed them? They’re pretty hard to ignore, considering they seem to want to fly directly into your eyeball when you’re reading a book or having a conversation with someone. So if you have them around your home you’ll know it. Fungus gnats are harmless enough. They don’t bite you or your plants and their adult lives only last a whopping ten days, but they can be annoying especially in large numbers. And no it’s not your imagination that they do seem to appear out of nowhere this time of year. This is because of several reasons. All of those plants you brought inside before a frost killed them are one reason. Chances are fungus gnats had already been in them but you hadn’t noticed them when they were outside. Then the warmer temperature inside your home increases breeding. Yay! You’re a proud parent of hundreds of fungus gnat larvae! Another fac-

In fact the first and most effective way to control fungus gnats is by letting your plants go lightly dry between watering. I’ve got to stress this one. It will make the biggest difference the fastest. If you’ve already adjusted your watering and there hasn’t been a noticeable improvement consider changing the soil in your plants. If it is fairly old soil it could be breaking down and essentially turning into gnat food. At least remove the top two to three inches of soil since this is where most larvae will be found. Another solution I’ve seen used is yellow sticky traps. Yes they’re ugly but the gnats are attracted to the yellow and get stuck so this reduces the amount of eggs being laid. Then as a last resort there are insecticides that might help, but try both reducing your watering and replacing the top layer of soil in your plants first. I have found this is by far the most effective way of solving a fungus gnat problem.
DRYER FIRES TIED TO LINT BUILDUP Q: My roommate says that we need to clean the lint filter on the dryer after every cycle, while I think it should be cleaned only when it’s full. Can you settle the argument? -- Flo in Harrisburg, Pa. A: This one is pretty easy to settle. Clean the lint filter after every cycle. Why? Because a buildup of lint in the dryer -- even just in the lint filter -- can become a fire hazard. Dryer lint is alarmingly combustible and causes some 15,000 laundry-room fires each year. Even though the lint filter screen traps a good deal of lint from clothing, some lint particles still pass through the screen and out of the dryer vent. Over time, these particles accumulate in corners and bends along the path that the dryer’s exhaust takes. So it’s not unusual to find lint buildup in places like the junction of the exhaust outlet and the hose attachment, or in the bends and folds of a longer piece of flexible vent hose. So in addition to cleaning out the filter after every load, you should clean
Again, fungus gnats aren’t really harmful to you or your plants. Maybe you like the constant companionship of a Fungus Gnat flying up your nose while you’re eating your lunch, but just in case you don’t rest assured that these few steps will at least greatly reduce the amount of time you play “clap smash the gnat” around your home.

behind the dryer and clean the vent connections all the way out to the outside vent at least twice a year. To do this, unplug the dryer and, with a helper, carefully slide it out away from the wall, enough so that you can reach behind it. You may need to shift the washing machine as well, if the units are located in a tight space (and it seems like they always are). Purchase a lint brush at your homeimprovement store. This can be used to clear built-up lint from the area beneath the lint filter, something you can do more frequently if this seems to be a problem. Clean the vents and hose by detaching the vent hose from the back of the dryer. Use the lint brush and if possible a shop vacuum to clear lint from the vent and the hose. Carefully brush or vacuum out the vent hose. Then, clean the exterior vent -- from the outside in, if need be. Make sure to reconnect the hose securely to the vents on either side. A final tip: If the exhaust hose or pipe is made of white vinyl, replace this material as soon as possible with flexible metal pipe. Vinyl in particular is no longer permitted for dryer exhaust in building codes. HOME TIP: Wash your dryer’s lint filter in warm soapy water every few months to clear built-up fabric softener from the screen. • On Oct. 30, 1893, the World’s Columbian Exposition closes in Chicago. Fairgoers were offered a chance to see the first gaspowered motorcar, an alternating-current power plant, a 46-foot-long cannon, a 1,500-pound Venus de Milo made of chocolate, and Juicy Fruit gum. • On Nov. 4, 1922, British archaeologist Howard Carter and his workmen discover a stone sarcophagus containing three coffins nested within each other. Inside the final coffin, which was made of solid gold, was the mummy of the boy-king Tutankhamen, preserved for more than 3,000 years. • On Nov. 3, 1930, the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel between the United States and Canada is officially opened to auto traffic. Each end of the tunnel had a 100-foot-tall ventilation tower; each tower held 12 huge fans, six for pumping fresh air into the tunnel and six for exhaust. The tunnel’s ventilation system still works just as well today as it did 80 years ago.
• On Oct. 29, 1948, a killer smog continues to hover over Donora, Pa. The town’s steel mills and a zinc smelting plant had released excessive amounts of sulfuric acid, carbon monoxide and other pollutants into the atmosphere. Over a five-day period, the smog killed some 20 people and made thousands more seriously ill. • On Oct. 31, 1950, 21-year-old Earl Lloyd becomes the first black man to play in an NBA game when he takes the court in the season opener for the Washington Capitols. The Capitols had picked him in the ninth round of the draft. After seven games with the Capitols, Lloyd was drafted into the military and sent to Korea for two years. • On Nov. 1, 1967, “Cool Hand Luke,â€? starring Paul Newman as a tough, anti-authoritarian, poker-playing prisoner, debuts in theaters. The film contained the now-famous line: “What we have here is a failure to communicate.â€? • On Nov. 2, 1986, Norwegian distance runner Grete Waitz wins her eighth New York City marathon. PUMPKIN PASTA PERFECT FOR FALL
N
othing so vividly illustrates the best of the fall harvest like pumpkins. The name “pumpkin” originated from the Greek word for “large melon” which is “pepon.” “Pepon” was nasalized by the French into “pompon.” The English changed “pompon” to “Pumpion.” American colonists changed “pumpion” into “pumpkin.” The origin of pumpkin pie occurred when the colonists sliced off the pumpkin top, removed the seeds, and filled the insides with milk, spices and honey. The pumpkin was then baked in hot ashes. The bright-orange color of pumpkin is

To select a pumpkin, look for one with 1 to 2 inches of stem left. If the stem is cut down too low, the pumpkin will decay quickly or may be decaying at the time of purchase. Avoid pumpkins with blemishes and soft spots. It should be heavy, although shape is unimportant. A lopsided pumpkin is not necessarily a bad pumpkin. Figure one pound of raw, untrimmed pumpkin for each cup finished pumpkin puree.

To prepare the pumpkin for cooking, spread newspaper over your work surface. Start by carefully removing the stem with a sharp knife. If you are planning to roast the pumpkin seeds, smash or drop the pumpkin on a hard surface to break it open. In any case, remove the stem and scoop out the seeds and scrape away all of the stringy mass. A messy job, but it will pay off.

Pumpkin Pasta continued from page 9
You can cook the pumpkin by boiling, steaming, roasting or using the microwave to create your own fresh pumpkin puree. Directions for cooking and preparing pumpkin puree are as follows: Boiling/Steaming Method: Cut the pumpkin into rather large chunks. Rinse in cold water. Place pieces in a large pot with about a cup of water. The water does not need to cover the pumpkin pieces. Cover the pot and boil for 20 to 30 minutes or until tender, or steam for 10 to 12 minutes. Check for doneness by poking with a fork. Drain the cooked pumpkin in a colander. Reserve the liquid to use as a base for soup. Oven Method: Cut pumpkin in half, scraping away stringy mass and seeds. Rinse under cold water. Place pumpkin, cut side down, on a large cookie sheet. Bake at 350 F for one hour or until fork tender. Microwave Method: Cut pumpkin in half, place cut side down on a microwave safe plate or tray. Microwave on high for 15 minutes, check for doneness at 1-2 minute intervals until fork tender. Preparing the Puree: Allow cooked pumpkin to cool. Remove the peel using a small sharp knife and your fingers. Place pumpkin in a food processor and puree or alternately use a food mill, ricer, strainer or potato masher. Freeze and store in one-cup portions in a small freezer bag for up to one year. There are several delicious varieties of organic canned pumpkin puree available if you don’t have time to process a fresh pumpkin. Either fresh or organic canned puree works beautifully in my recipe for Tortellini With Pumpkin Sage Sauce. Have a happy fall!
TORTELLINI WITH PUMPKIN SAGE SAUCE 2 pounds cheese tortellini 1 tablespoon plus 1 1/2 teaspoons salt 2 tablespoons plus 1 teaspoon olive oil 1 yellow onion, chopped

1. Preheat oven to 400 F. 2. Place a large pot of salted water over high heat to boil. When water is boiling, add 1 tablespoon of salt and drop in tortellini. Cook according to package directions. Drain cooked tortellini. Set aside. 3. Add 2 tablespoons of the olive oil to a microwave-safe bowl with the onions and garlic. Season with the teaspoon of the salt, the sage, pepper and red pepper flakes. Cook on high for 2 to 3 minutes, until the onions soften. 4. Stir in the pumpkin and broth, remaining 1/2 teaspoon of salt, and cinnamon or nutmeg. Toss 1/2 of pumpkin sauce with tortellini until pasta is wellcoated. Transfer to a casserole dish. 5. Spoon the remaining pumpkin sauce on top of the pasta. Sprinkle with Panko breadcrumbs. Sprinkle with remaining teaspoon of olive oil. 6. Cover with cheese and bake until cheese is melted, about 8 to 10 minutes. Sprinkle with the basil leaves and fried sage leaves, if desired.

New DVD Releases for Week of October 29, 2012 PICKS OF THE WEEK “The Campaign” (R) -- Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis face off as two satirical politicians fighting in a North Carolina congressional race. Ferrell plays the incumbent, Cam Brady, a moron prone to public embarrassment. Galifianakis plays the opposing Marty Huggins, a thin-voiced housecat of a man. He’s pushed into the campaign by evil CEOs eager to replace Brady with a more obedient tool. Ferrell and Galifianakis do their character
bits well enough for an hour and 25 minutes, so you’ll laugh at least a few times. Don’t expect any piercing or insightful takes on the modern political landscape. The movie is generous with physical comedy, light on satire. “Safety Not Guaranteed” (R) -- Short on ideas and brimming with cynicism, a group of Seattle magazine reporters are assigned to do a story about some local weirdo. Somebody posted in the classifieds section that they were seeking a partner for time travel. Aubrey Plaza (the brooding, adorable, sarcastic young secretary from TV’s “Parks and Recreation”) shows her dramatic talent as the intern tasked with earning the “time traveler’s” trust. The result is a funny, unique comedy with some great performances. Mark Duplass plays an earnest and likable grocery clerk who believes he’s cracked the mystery of time travel. It’s not a big-budget flick, but
the movie has heart and grabbed attention at Sundance. “Ruby Sparks” (R) -- Calvin (Paul Dano) is a young writer struggling to write a follow up to his early success. As a writing exercise he invents Ruby Sparks, the perfect fictional girlfriend. One day he wakes up and Ruby (Zoe Kazan, also the screenwriter) is a real woman in his life. She’s sweet and quirky and everything he’s written about her is true. Surprisingly, the film avoids a trite romcom fantasy approach (this isn’t “Mannequin”). The movie gets deep and explores themes about love, control and expectations as Calvin sees his dream girl as a flesh-and-blood person. Dano and Kazan bring so much chemistry that it’s no surprise they’re also a couple off-screen. “First Position” (NR) -- This documentary follows six kids from vastly different backgrounds who put their hopes and

dreams into ballet. Top-tier ballet requires that dancers undergo intense training from a very early age. Without any interest or prior knowledge of ballet, you can be taken in by their stories. Ballet demands determination and sacrifice, and the film shows the level of endurance and physicality that dancers must possess.

The owners, Dennis and Rene Beshear, organized and initiated this fun harvest festival by providing a free pumpkin to every child. In addition to pumpkins, each child enjoyed candy, warm cider for all, and the opportunity to feed and pet as many alpacas as they desired. This event was also a canned food drive for TriLakes Cares which collected over 540 lbs of food! Tri-Lakes Cares gladly received the donations with many thanks to this generous community. The food drive was inspired by the Beshear’s ten year old daughter Sara Beshear. The Beshear family would like to give a special thanks to Tri-Lakes Dental & Orthodontics, and the Fairfield Inn & Suites for their support with this community event, which helped to provide 220 pumpkins for this occasion. Due to these generous donations from the community, Peak Ranch Alpacas is very excited to announce that they will be hosting another pumpkin patch/food donation event next October.

LAUNCH YOUR LEGACY By Ron Ross

raveyards just aren’t what they used to be. Many no longer allow engraved upright monuments of varying shapes and sizes, probably because they are way too much work to maintain. They want everything to be flat on the ground so they can quickly dash through the graveyard with their lawnmowers. They call this new style a “flat marker cemetery”. To be honest, I’m not that impressed at flat marker cemeteries and I’m glad to hear the old-style cemetery is back on the rise today. There’s a very old cemetery just off
I-25 at historic Idaho Springs, Colorado that has some of the most interesting gravestones you will ever see. My wife and I stopped there one afternoon and strolled around the ancient grave markers and read their fascinating and curious engravings.
both born on October 3rd. But, where you are buried and what kind of headstone you have, in the final analysis, is not what’s important. Here’s why: the stone on a grave may be the marker of a life, but it is not the mark of a meaningful life.
I know it sounds weird, but we like graveyards. We never pass Julesburg, Colorado on I-76 without taking a few moments to stop by the graveside of my paternal grandparents. You can actually see their gravestones from the Interstate if you know where to look.
One of my favorite authors, the late Steven Covey, writes about leaving a legacy. In one of his books he suggests you imagine your funeral where four speakers are featured. One is from you family, one is a good friend, one is a member of your community and another is You can learn a lot in a graveyard. from your work. GLENEAGLE WOMEN’S CLUB AWARDS GRANT TO HAP Monument, CO; October 16, 2012. “The members of Gleneagle Women’s Club are pleased to present this contribution to HAP to support their series of programs benefiting the local community of senior citizens.” With those words, club president Mary K. Jones, accompanied by Philanthropic Committee member Cookie Trulsson, handed Tri-Lakes Health Advocacy Partnership board president Ted Rinebarger a $500 check during the October HAP board meeting. Rinebarger thanked the entire Gleneagle Women’s Club for their generosity and recognition of HAP’s work to support the Tri-Lakes community. He cited as an example, the partnership with Lewis-Palmer School District 38 to provide a facility for a senior center, and a location for the HAP-sponsored Wednesday senior luncheons. He emphasized that this donation will help ensure the continuance of HAP’s social and health-related programs available at the Tri-Lakes Senior Center. The Gleneagle Women’s Club is a social and philanthropic group that meets monthly. Members include, but are not limited to, Gleneagle residents; others who are interested in socializing and helping the local community are welcome to join. The Gleneagle Women’s Club hosts an annual Arts and Crafts Show on the third Saturday of November and they welcome all to attend . This year’s show is scheduled for November 17 at the Gleneagle Golf

The club donates time and goods to certain organizations throughout the year, and at the end of each year they donate a set amount of their budget to local non-profit organizations recommended by their Philanthropy committee, headed by Dianne Ohlrich. Tri-Lakes Health Advocacy Partnership was established in 1996 as a nonprofit organization serving Monument, Palmer Lake, Woodmoor, Gleneagle, and unincorporated areas of north El Paso County. HAP is an all-volunteer organization with no paid staff; all contributions directly support HAP programs for community health and senior citizens. elcome ladies and gentlemen to November. October was a month of mythology and folklore; a month spent saluting the dark side. Next month, in December, you’ll be forced to watch, read, and hear Christmas; every hour, every day. I’ll even write you a jolly good poem. I know, you can’t wait. But what then does the feeble November have in store for us? Well, other than my brother’s birthday (happy 25th in advance Jared!), it allows us, in the midst of such holidays, to have a scandalous month! Please, don’t argue that Thanksgiving cannot be tainted; it is but a day for turkey, cider, and football. So I present to you, loyal reader, the dirty month of November’s best happening…
It comes up quickly on Saturday, November 10th. Rodz Bar and Grill (Located at Pinz Bowling Center) will be having a 21+ shindig for the ages. Get out of the holiday spirit for one night and enjoy the Tri-Lakes area’s first Burlesque show in as

We would, however, want them to tell folks that we stood for something, or did something important, or made some kind of difference while we were here. That’s the legacy that is far more important than the size of your headstone. It’s the legacy of significance and usefulness. It’s the legacy of generations. I think it was Covey that quoted Edwin Hubbel Chapin: “Every action of our lives touches some chord that will vibrate in eternity.” That, my friend, is the definition of a legacy. Wouldn’t you love to do something that might strike a beautiful chord that will “vibrate in eternity”? You can if you launch your legacy, but you must start today. What’s your “Kick in the pants” for this week? You guessed it, “Launch your legacy.” ©2012 Ron Ross
long as I can remember. Burlesque performers by the name of “Cleo Katra”, “Mistress Mary Lust”, “Pearle Darrier”, “Julie Davey”, “Bella Rose” will be dancing the night away in this traditional artistic satire that originated in the 1800’s. Sounds like a wild bunch of ladies, huh? The event, hosted by Comedian Chris Tyler, is sure to be full of laughs and intrigue. There will also be a fire-eater by the name of Wally Burkholder who plans to wow the crowd with his odd array of talents. What more could you really ask for from a Tri-lakes area variety show? That’s what I thought, exactly nothing. Tickets are required to get into the highly anticipated event. They are $10 and can be purchased online at www.PinzBowling.com, or in Rodz Bar and Grill. You can also call the center at (719) 4877469 for more information. So take a break from the Holiday season and do something that upper society would frown upon (or at least rebuke publicly, only to fall into a pool of their hypocrisy once they purchase tickets). The time is now; take a chance and watch a dance with us on November 10th. I’ll be sure to save you a stool.

Series 2, Article 9 Google has launched a new, mysterious service called What Do You Love. Find it at www.wdyl.com It's a simple search box, similar to the one on Google's homepage, but it returns results from more than 20 different Google services, including Google Translate, Trends, YouTube, Maps and Groups. This is a great resource for adults, students and kids alike. What Do You Love instantly creates a mini-portal about any term you choose, which makes it a nice option for users who don't have the time to tinker with options and simply want to have access to Google's many services on one page. The results are presented in little boxes that can, in some cases, be expanded by clicking on the icon in the lower right corner. If you need even more results, you can always click the button in the upper right corner of the box and go directly to the chosen service. ________________________ Do you want to know what's going on in the world, but you don't want to sit through hours of news stories on TV? ince the market meltdown in 2008 there has been a numbness among investors – a fear to do anything. And who can blame them. From late-2007 through March of 2008 we saw the greatest erosion of wealth that most have ever experienced in their lifetimes. The Dow Jones Industrial Average reached an all-time high of 14,164 in October of 2007 and then began a downward spiral that did not end until March 6, 2008, closing at 6,443. A loss of over 50% and the troubles didn’t stop there. The housing bubble exploded driving down home prices and forcing many homeowners into foreclosure. Unemployment began to rise and millions of workers found themselves without jobs when they could least afford it. Wall Street and our banking system were in chaos requiring government bailouts and interest rates on federal funds were pushed down to near zero. It was bad, but what has happened since then? If you have been watching televi-
This year, especially over the last few months, we have seen incredible swings in the marketplace. The Dow has been up one hundred, two hundred points in a day and down the same the next or so it seems. And the headlines have been taking advantage of it. Let’s face it, fear sells. This was driven home to me not long ago when I ran into a friend at the post office. She asked me when are these markets going to turn around. You could tell the real concern in her voice. It’s a concern that I have had expressed to me repeatedly by those who attend my workshops and seminars. It’s a concern you may very well have. I told her that the markets have turned around, that we are up nearly 15% already this year. She seemed rather surprised. Sometimes reality is very different than what we have been led to believe.
