or hundreds of years, rumors, myths and legends have surrounded the story of King Arthur and Camelot. Even Walt Disney jumped on board with the animated ďŹ lm, “The Sword and the Stone.â€? But is it truth or is it myth? Historians have been debating the facts for centuries. Snippetz decided to take a look for ourselves‌and here’s what we’ve found.

Merlin crowned Arthur King of England. As kings will do, Arthur found a woman he wanted to marry, Guinevere. As a dowry, Guinevere’s father presented King Arthur with the infamous Round Table. In the upcoming years, the Round Table would be the place where the king and his knights would sit and discuss matters.
As you can imagine, there are several renditions that describe King Arthur’s rise to power and his incredible life as an almost god-like figure. The basic premise remains the same, and the story goes like this:
But what would a story like this be without an affair? Lancelot, one of King Arthur’s most trusted and skilled knights, had his sights set on the queen. Guinevere returned his affection and the two got caught up in an affair that lead the couple to flee the kingdom. King Arthur followed with the intent of catching the pair and left his kingdom under the rule of his son/nephew Mordred. It appears that Arthur was also adulterous and had an affair with his half-sister Morgan Le Fay, resulting in the birth of Mordred.
It all began with a lie. Arthur’s father, Uther Pendragon was the king of England and he fell in love with another man’s wife named Igraine. With Igraine’s husband away at war, Uther begged a favor from his magician Merlin to change Uther’s appearance so that Igraine would think he was her husband. Uther seduced her and from that union, Arthur was born.
Mordred did not want to give up the kingdom to Arthur upon his return. The pair fought and King Arthur killed Mordred but sustained fatal wounds. Arthur commanded Sir Bedivere to throw his sword, Excalibur back into the lake where he had received it from the Lady of the Lake. He was carried away on a barge to the isle of Avalon where some say he died and others say
Uther gave his son over to a man named Sir Ector. Arthur was raised as Sir Ector’s son and brother to the man’s biological son, Kay. Following Uther’s death, there was no king to rule England. As a way to determine who would be the next King of England, Merlin used his magical powers to insert a sword in a huge boulder and said that whoever could remove that sword would be the next king. Naturally, many attempted the feat, but it was young Arthur, a teenager at the time, who was able to draw the sword from the stone.

WAS HE OR WASN’T HE? It has been said that Arthur may not have been a real-to-life human, but rather a mythical creation. Early Celtic mythology often refers to his immortality, superhuman strength and abilities, and unusual friends such as giants and wizards. The basic summary of the legend certainly contains trappings of a myth, but a grain of truth remains in many of the less fantastical aspects of the story. There are definite references to an “Arthur” in several historical writings, dating back as far as 600 A.D., possibly earlier. It is unclear if the man or men named in these writings is the King Arthur of legend. Two writings in particular point to King Arthur’s existence; “History of the Britons” written by Nennius in 829-830 A.D.; and “History of the Kings of Britain” written by Geoffrey of Monmouth in 1136.

These writings have caused some dissention between more contemporary historians simply based on the fact that each was written at least 300 years after the supposed existence of King Arthur. However, many agree that King Arthur in fact, did exist.
THE KNIGHTS OF THE ROUND TABLE As with the legend of King Arthur, the Knights of the Round Table also have created discord among historians. Did they exist? If so, how many were there? The answer is that no one really knows for sure. But the general consensus seems to be that there were knights who attended sessions around the Round Table alongside the king. The following represent those who consistently appear on the lists of the

vere were to wed. Whether or not the story about King Arthur is true, historians seem to be in agreement about this part of the legend: Camelot didn’t exist. Camelot was first mentioned in a poem from the 1170s. In previous historical writings, it is nowhere to be found. While the existence of Camelot the castle has largely been debunked, the idea that King Arthur must have had some kingdom to rule has left historians to speculate where that might have been. There is general agreement that one likely place is Caerleon, England. Another is Cadbury Castle in Somerset, England. Both places seem to be described in several historical writings, but neither is referred to directly.

Not to be confused with the hotel in Las Vegas, this was a sword said to be wielded by King Arthur. One legend says the sword was given to Arthur by the Lady of the Lake and that he alone was to use it. Another points to Excalibur as the sword that Arthur pulled from the stone in order to be crowned King.
MORE ABOUT KING ARTHUR • The legend of King Arthur has ties to Stonehenge. Supposedly, Merlin was asked by King Uther to find the stones of the Giant’s Dance in Ireland. The stones were said to be magic and believed to possess curative properties. Uther wanted them to be used in the construction of a memorial for his brother Ambrosius and the War Lords. Merlin was said to have moved the stones by magic to the seashore, then floated them across to Britain.
Either way, the stories seem to converge when they describe Arthur handing over the sword after killing Mordred. As he lay dying, King Arthur told Sir Bedivere to throw the sword back into the lake from where it came. Sir Bedivere tried several times to dispose of the sword per Arthur’s instructions, struggling because he felt it was a great shame to get rid of such a powerful sword. Finally, Bedivere succeeds and the Lady of the Lake reaches out to grab Excalibur and drag it back down to the depths of the enchanted lake.
• King Arthur’s grave was supposedly discovered at Glastonbury in 1190. Naturally, there’s no concrete evidence

to support or discredit the claim. • King Arthur’s quest for the Holy Grail was said to be the highest pursuit for a knight. Given that Arthur was said to be a nearly unstoppable general who led his army to 12 huge victories, it’s easy to see why this theme runs through just about every version of the King Arthur legends…as well as the Monty Python movie. • Camelot is a real place in modern times. It’s a theme park located in Lancashire, England. It features rides such as the Knightmare and Excalibur 2, although it’s probably best to steer clear of the latter; a boy fell from the ride in August 2011.

IT’S A LOUSY WORLD DEAR DR. DONOHUE: My entire family has lice. I am starting a support group for families who have had to experience this awful invasion of their scalps. I have reached the breaking point. Give me a plan for treatment and a timetable for their eradication from our home. -- Name Withheld Lest Neighbors Find Out ANSWER: One of nature’s smallest creatures, the head louse upsets domestic tranquility with more revulsion than most health-endangering illnesses. Head lice bring no disease with them. They are tiny, only 3 millimeters (1/10 inch) in length. They feed on blood and die within a day or two off the scalp. After feeding, lice have a reddish-brown hue. The mother louse glues louse eggs to hair, and those structures are called nits. They are only 1 millimeter (4/100 inch) long. The eggs hatch in six to 10 days. If nits are more than a quarter of an inch from the scalp, the baby louse has already hatched, and the nit is no longer a problem. In an average life span of three months, the mother louse can lay up to 300 eggs. Lice are not an indication of poor hygiene. Most of the time, they’re introduced into a family by a child who caught them at school. They can infest other family members quickly. Transmission comes from direct contact with an infested individual and, less often, from contact with inanimate objects used by that individual, like hats, combs, brushes and bedding. You’re not alone. Six to 12 million Americans come down with head lice yearly.
Enjoy the Beauty of Colorado Without the Sneeze or the Wheeze.
Almost all people with head lice have intense scalp itching. A number of methods effectively rid you of the problem. The first medicines used are permethrin (Nix) or pyrethrins (Rid), which are cheap and usually effective, although lice are becoming resistant to them in some locations. A second treatment is given seven to 10 days after the first. Ovide (malathion) is used if lice linger after Nix or Rid. And should Ovide not work, the oral medicine Stromectol (ivermectin) is available. A new medicine is Natroba (spinosad) suspension. It is held in reserve as a last resort. This nightmare should be over in two to three weeks.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: My husband was told he had prostate cancer in 2010 and had his prostate removed. Now his doctor wants him to have PSA testing. He says he might need radiation because he has prostate cancer. If he has no prostate gland, how can he have prostate cancer? -- D.R.
PALMER LAKE WELLNESS CENTER
ANSWER: The doctor wants to be sure that cancer cells did not spread from to other body sites. Even though the gland was completely removed, not all the potential sites for cancer spread were removed. That’s all but impossible to do. The PSA test will show if prostate cancer is active in those other places. If it is, then further treatment is required.

not appreciate. So strive for damp not sopping wet and turn your pile occasionally to achieve even moisture and temperature.
COMPOSTING YARD WASTE Composting yard waste can be a very practical thing to do. After all it recycles nutrients back into your yard and compost is important for good soil structure. Not only is it a tremendous space saver it is also a money saver! You’ll save money not having it hauled away and you’ll save money not having to buy as much compost and mulch later in the year. Often the biggest thing that keeps people from composting is that they simply don’t know how. Composting is easy if you follow a few basic rules. To create a successful compost pile you want to alternate layers of dried plant material with layers of green plant material. Layers 6 – 8” deep will help your compost pile reach the right amount of nitrogen. Microbes break down the plant material and they need nitrogen to feed on. If green plant material is scarce then an application of blood meal or other fertilizer high in nitrogen is necessary. The microbes also need steady amounts of moisture or they can dry up and die so after every few layers water your pile and keep it lightly moist throughout the year. Keeping your pile too moist, on the other hand, will deprive your microbes of oxygen and your pile will give off a rotting smell the neighbors might
(IN STOCK ITEMS ONLY)
*During the sale & while supplies last!
To effectively kill most plant diseases your compost pile needs to reach a temperature of 122 degrees and for the microbes to continue their hard work it’s ideal for temperatures to be between 70 and 140 degrees. This is obviously achieved much faster in the summer months. Don’t worry it’s not necessary to drag our compost pile into the living room in the winter to keep it warm; it will just take a bit longer to produce nice compost. Readily composted materials include leaves, straw, green parts from flowers and vegetables, and small amounts of twigs, weeds and grass clippings. Be careful though not to add too much plant material treated with weed killer as this will lengthen the time it will take to break down. Many people also choose to compost kitchen wastes like egg shells, coffee grounds and vegetable scraps, but for some people this can present a problem with bears or raccoons. It is not advised to compost meat, bones or dairy products. For those who would like to compost livestock manure keep in mind the potential hazard of E. coli on food gardens. If you intend to use composted manure for a food garden than a 2 to 4 month curing period after its composted is recommended.
it -- to the tile. Tiles that have been scratched too deeply to buff out or that are cracked or broken should be replaced. Locate extra tiles, if you have them, or purchase matching replacement tile (you may need to take a piece of the damaged tile, once removed, to match the color).
CERAMIC TILE FLOOR MARRED BY SCRATCHES Q: My kitchen has a ceramic tile floor, and several of the tiles have so many scratches that they look dull even after cleaning. Can I repair the scratches, or does the tile need to be replaced? -- Carol in Eau Claire, Wis. A: Glazed ceramic tiles are tough and resistant to most of the wear and tear that happens in high-traffic areas, but they can still become scratched or dull over time. If the scratches are minor -- they mark the finish but don’t go all the way through the color glaze -- it’s possible to polish them out. First, clean and mop the floor so that you have a clear, debris-free surface to work on. Next, starting with the first scratched tile, apply a small amount of brass cleaner/ polish to the scratch with a lint-free cloth, rubbing in circles. Let the polish dry, then buff away. If you don’t have brass cleaner, toothpaste or baking soda can be used. To temporarily protect the tile surface, apply a bit of car wax -- a plain paste wax, not cleaner wax, which has an abrasive in
After 1 to 2 months in the summer and a bit longer in the cooler months you will have a compost pile that has shrunk considerably and has a wonderful earthy smell! A mix your gardens and your wallet will surely appreciate!

Use a grout saw to carefully cut away the grout around the edges of the damaged tile. This creates a little wiggle room to loosen the tile without damaging surrounding tiles. Next, using a hammer and small chisel, gently tap the tile loose. (Place the chisel on or near the damage rather than at the edge of the tile where other tile might be damaged.) It’s OK if the damaged tile chips or cracks -- save it to do your color match. Once the tile is removed, brush or cut away debris or loose adhesive. Fit the new tile into the open space; if the tile fits correctly, apply a coat of tile adhesive to the back and fix it so that the spacing between the tile’s edges and the edges of the other tiles is even. Let the adhesive dry completely, and then fill the edges with grout that matches the color of the surrounding grout. HOME TIP: Scraps of carpet and extra tiles are important to keep around for small repair jobs. Store them in one designated place, like a box or on a shelf in the garage, until needed. Franklin invested nearly 40 years in the establishment of a reliable system of delivering mail. He was fired in 1774 for opening and publishing Massachusetts Royal Governor Thomas Hutchinson’s correspondence. • On Nov. 5, 1895, Rochester, N.Y., patent attorney George Selden wins U.S. Patent No. 549,160 for an “improved road engineâ€? powered by a “liquid-hydrocarbon engine of the compression type.â€? With that, as far as the government was concerned, George Selden had invented the car -- though he had never built a single one. • On Nov. 10, 1928, the first installment of “All Quiet on the Western Front,â€? Erich Maria Remarque’s acclaimed novel of World War I, is first published in serial form. Remarque’s realistic depiction of trench warfare from the perspective of young soldiers was eventually translated into more than 20 languages.
• On Nov. 11, 1942, Congress approves lowering the draft age to 18 and raising the upper limit to age 37, increasing the number of draftees. During the first draft in 1940, 50 percent were rejected for health reasons and 20 percent of those who registered were illiterate. • On Nov. 8, 1951, Yankees catcher Yogi Berra is voted the American League’s most valuable player for the first time in his career. He went on to be the league MVP twice more, in 1954 and 1955. • On Nov. 9, 1965, the biggest power failure in U.S. history occurs as all of New York state, and parts of seven neighboring states and eastern Canada are plunged into darkness. The blackout during the evening rush hour trapped 800,000 people in New York’s subways and stranded thousands more in office buildings and elevators. • On Nov. 6, 1977, the earthen Toccoa Falls Dam in northeastern Georgia gives way, and 39 people die in the resulting flood. • In this season of bitter partisan rivalries, it would be well to remember the following sage observation: “Do not trust to the cheering, for those persons would cheer just as much if you and I were going to be hanged.” The man who first made that observation was Lord Protector of England Oliver Cromwell, considered by some to be a hero of liberty, by others to be a regicidal dictator. He died in 1658, probably from septicemia. He was so reviled that, three years later, he body was exhumed so that he could be posthumously executed, his body thrown into a pit and his head displayed on a pole outside Westminster Hall.

The Celiac Sprue Association lists three things that happen before the onset of the disease: a genetic predisposition, a diet containing wheat, barley, rye or oats, and a trigger. The trigger could be something like overexposure to wheat, extreme stress, surgery or a viral infection.
GOING GLUTEN FREE A
ccording to the National Digestive Diseases Information Clearinghouse, about 2 million people -- or 1 in 133 people -- in the United States have celiac disease. It is considered to be a genetic disorder, and can be diagnosed in infancy through adulthood. Both males and females can have the disease, but more women than men are diagnosed with it. Celiac Sprue is a disease in which a person does not tolerate gluten, the protein in wheat, barley, rye and, to a lesser extent, oats. Celiac Sprue is not a food allergy, but a disease that damages the small intestine and prevents absorption of nutrients. My daughter struggles with celiac disease, which makes family dinners an interesting blend of gluten-free products transformed into family favorites.
1455 Cipriani Loop Monument 80132
SPORTS BAR & GRILL
It is a complicated disease because a person can have it and not have symptoms. There have been instances where children have been diagnosed with Celiac Sprue, but then have symptoms disappear. They later found that although there were no symptoms, damage to the small intestine was still occurring.
OPEN FOR LUNCH WEDNESDAY H FRIDAY NC LS U L CIA SATURDAY E SP
The damage in the small intestine is to the villi, which are thin, hairlike projections on the lining of the small intestine. They allow nutrients into the bloodstream. If the villi are damaged, malnutrition, anemia, weight loss and growth retardation can occur.
SUNDAY
Celiac disease is often underdiagnosed because it can be confused with other diseases such as irritable bowel syndrome, diverticulitis or Crohn’s disease. Symptoms of celiac disease vary from person to person. To diagnose celiac disease, a physician will first do a blood test. If certain antibodies are present, they will do a small bowel biopsy to check for damage to the villi.

SWISS CHARD SUSHI You can use zucchini, cucumbers, bell peppers or any other crisp veggies that have been sliced into thin strips in this recipe with delicious results. 8 large leaves Swiss chard 1 tablespoon plus 1/2 teaspoon salt 2 tablespoons coconut oil 1 tablespoon low-sodium soy sauce 1 cup cooked fried, brown or white rice 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper 2 medium carrots, cut into thin strips 2 green onions, roots removed, green and white parts cut into thin strips 1/3 cup Ume plum vinegar 2 tablespoons toasted sesame oil Prepare Swiss Chard: Rinse Swiss chard leaves under cool running water. Fill a large bowl with ice water and 1/2 tablespoon salt and set aside. Fill a large saucepan with water and bring to a boil over high heat. Add 1/2 tablespoon salt. Blanch chard leaves by submerging in the boiling water until the rib is softened and the leaves become limp -- about 1 minute. Transfer to the prepared ice bath, drain cooled leaves and stack between sheets of paper tow-
el until dry. Cut out the rib on each leaf and set leaves aside.

New DVD Releases for Week of November 5, 2012 PICKS OF THE WEEK “The Amazing Spider-man” (PG-13) -With a new cast and new director, the story of Spider-man starts over from the beginning. It seems we did this not so long ago -with the spider bite and gradual realization of responsibility. However, this new take on the Webslinger packs more emotional punch and has a different edge to it. This new Spider Saga is less colorful, cartoony and campy. Andrew Garfield (“The Social Network”)
plays Peter Parker, who’s on a journey to discover what happened to the parents he never knew. What he finds instead is a radioactive spider and The Lizard, a creepy enemy never before seen in a Spider-man movie. “Arthur Christmas” (PG) -- This animated feature from England has enough heart and visual grandeur to get anyone hyped up for Christmas. Santa has two sons; Steve (voiced by Hugh Laury), the tough-as-nails Christmas commando; and Arthur (James Macavoy), a clumsy little guy with funny voice intonations. When a present for one deserving child is left behind, it’s up to Arthur and Grandsanta to make the delivery in time for Christmas morning. This is the first major computer-animated production from Aardman Animations, the studio famous for “Wallace and Gromit.” Regardless of how you handle British hu-
mor, “Arthur Christmas” is cheerful and warm. There are some wicked humorists behind the scenes, but Arthur’s finished product is as bright and cheery as a star on a tree. “Your Sister’s Sister” (R) -- Jack (Mark Duplass) is mourning the loss of his brother when he makes a scene at a memorial. His friend Iris (Emily Blunt) sends him to an old family cabin in the Pacific Northwest to sort things out. Jack finds Iris’ sister is already at the cabin, drinking after a big breakup. Jack and Hannah have a one-night stand, and a perfect love triangle forms when Iris shows up the next morning. What is it with cabins adjacent to water that always makes people have heart-toheart talks and face their inner wants? This movie is part melodrama, part romcom, but certainly interesting and heartfelt.

“Rashomon” (Criterion Collection) -This 1951 film from celebrated director Akira Kurosawa is often mimicked for its inventive storytelling. In feudal Japan, local authorities try to figure out how a samurai was killed while walking through the woods with his wife. The story is told through the testimony given by each of the witnesses. The stories don’t match up, but certain details seem to stick out.

inter is upon us! Now is the time when homeowners begin thinking about their heating bills and the comfort of their homes, and many people call Powers Thermal Insulation to increase the depth of insulation in their attics. Since many attics are easily accessible, this cost effective solution makes sense. But did you know that air leakage contributes up to 30% of
the energy loss in a home? Much of this air leakage occurs in the attic, through electric and plumbing penetrations in the tops of walls, light fixtures, and small cracks between the framing and sheetrock. We seal those penetrations and cracks, keeping the cold, winter air from entering your living space from the attic. So, add an Attic Air Seal Package to your attic insulation upgrade. Your home will be more comfortable and energy efficient if you do. Call Powers Thermal Insulation for a FREE CONSULTATION and estimate today!

CHILEAN RESCUE POD UNVEILED & HERITAGE LECTURE SERIES WITH RON ELMLINGER Thursday, November 8 6:00 p.m.
Do you believe that there is little hope in the world? That every shred of dignity mankind ever clung onto has slipped away in the cold breeze of cruel reality? Well then, this article is not for you. You see, this article is for the positive folks out there. This article is a pitch to everyone who wants to improve their weekly routine; everyone who is tired of the 8-5 work routine. Those who are sick of working, going home, watching X-Factor, the Voice, Idol, or whatever other singer-shows the networks are shoving in our faces these days. It’s time for a change - a good one. Those who desire this change must be bold. Wednesday is irrefutably the most mundane day of the week. This is the day that needs the spice people. This is the reason Pinz
Bowling Center says, ‘Why Not Wednesday?’. The new league is accepting sign-ups now for 4-person mixed adult teams. It’s the perfect opportunity to shake up the work week. Imagine you and three of your closest friends tearing up the lanes, talking trash, and feeling the thrill of the three-game series. You can meet some new friends, stay in shape, and have a good, laid back time doing it. You don’t have to be a professional bowler to join a league. What you do have to do I act quickly; the start date is next week on Wednesday, November 7th at 7:00pm. The league will continue to meet weekly at the 7:00pm hour. So get out there, talk to your spouse, your friends, your co-workers. Only YOU can make the change you want in your week. Leagues at Pinz are affordable, so you don’t have to break the wallet to take part. Call Pinz today at (719) 487-7469, or come into the center and grab a flyer to sign up. Take a chance; make a change; go bowling.

n September, The Western Museum of Mining and Industry acquired an amazing, full scale (12.7 feet tall!) replica of the capsule (designed by NASA, built by the Chilean Navy, and called a “pod”) that rescued 33 Chilean Miners who were trapped 2300 feet underground in August of 2010. The Chilean Tourist Board selected the museum to receive this one-of-a-kind artifact. On November 8, 2012, at 6:00 p.m., the museum will commemorate this addition to our collection with an exhibit opening celebration. Whether you followed the story in the news or are an avid mining and engineering fan, come to see this amazing mine rescue device and learn more about the dramatic Chilean mine rescue story that had the whole world holding its breath! Following this opening, stay for our Heritage Lecture series on Historic Cold War Uranium Production
and its Health Effects on Workers with guest speaker Ron Elmlinger. During the Cold War period of our nation’s history, an arsenal of nuclear weapons and atomic fuel was produced. Many uranium miners and energy workers, who believed they were patriots contributing to this national security effort, became ill. Ron Elmlinger, a veteran of the Cold War with impressive health care credentials, founded the nonprofit Cold War Patriots organization that assists all energy employees who have become ill from working near radiologic and toxic substances. Ron will review this history, the illnesses it caused, and what his organization does to help workers from this historic period. Join us for this interesting opening and important educational presentation. Space is limited, so please call 719-488-0880 or email us at RSVP@wmmi.org with your reservation.

Here are two observations concerning decision making that I think are worthy of your consideration:
DEVELOP YOUR DECISION MAKING SKILLS By Ron Ross “I’m divorcing my second wife,” a friend told me recently. Before I could even respond, he said sorrowfully, “You know what Dr. Ross? I should never have divorced my first one.” In the area of bad decisions, my friend is not alone. Several years ago my wife and I were living in a city we didn’t like, doing a job we despised, in the company of people we didn’t enjoy. Many times during the three long years we were there my wife would whimper, “How did we ever end up here?”
When she threatened to go to the local truck stop and hitch a ride with any trucker going either east or west, I realized it was time to figure out how to get out of town. So we started making decisions that eventually got us back to sanity, back to God’s country, back to Colorado. Now she tells me she will live with me anywhere in the world as long as it’s in Colorado.
are who you are today because of the decisions you made in the past; and who you will be tomorrow will be determined by the decisions you make today.
So how good are you at making right decisions? If you are normal you have made your quota of both good and bad decisions. Some decisions you thought were good when you made them, and some you knew You make a few good decisions and were wrong and you made them anygood things happen. Make some way, and a few that seemed wrong bad ones and who knows what sorry turned out right. Who’s to know? town or situation you’ll end up in? Don’t you wish that warning lights Life, it appears, is little more than would flash when you are about to a series of decisions. And it all make a bad choice or that trumpets started in the Garden of Eden when would sound when you’re about Eve asked Adam, “Hey big boy, you to decide right? Unfortunately life wanna bite of this?” The rest is his- isn’t like that. You have to make tory. Do you see the long-term im- decisions day-by-day, and even moment-by-moment and hope that pact one bad decision can make? ultimately the good ones outnumber Here is a reality check for you: You the bad.
First of all, good decisions are the result of thoughtful deliberation spiced with the advice of wise counselors. Give emotion, reason, wise counsel and sufficient time equal opportunity to guide you in your decision making process. Second, good decisions give you the confidence to make more good decisions. If you’re on a downward spiral because of bad decisions, start by making a few good small decisions and increase your confidence until you are ready to take on the looming, life-changing choices that will elevate you two a whole new level of living. It’s one of the most import skills you’ll ever learn because your destiny is determined one small decision at a time. You’re “Kick in the pants” for this week is this: Go a day and make good decisions, then a week, then a month. In the process you develop valuable decision making skills and you will blossom!

FINALLY, COLLEGE COSTS CAN NOW BE COMPARED
T
his summer, the U.S. Department of Education asked colleges across the country to help potential students determine their true costs for a college education. Colleges were asked to provide each accepted student with a “shopping sheet” to make it easier to compare the costs of attending their college versus other schools. The sheets include details such as tuition and fees, housing, books, grants from the school, Pell Grants and grants from the state. Further down the page are the net costs that the student will be expected to provide, as well as the options for paying those, such as work study, loans and family contributions. Other handy information on the page details the graduation rate of the school, and whether it’s considered low, medium or high. The loan default rate also is shown for the school, comparing it with the national rate. One of the most helpful sections of the sheet is the loan-repayment information. The section shows the average levels of borrowing for the school, as well as the expected monthly rate of repayment over 10 years. Students will know going in
what their repayments are likely to be. To see an example of the college shopping sheet, go to: collegecost.ed.gov/shopping_sheet. pdf
LIVING GOD’S GIFTS
For students just starting the process of applying to schools, the Federal Student Aid site (studentaid.ed.gov) has a wealth of information on financial aid for college. Who gets aid (the criteria) and the types of aid (work study, grants and loans) are linked, with special sections on avoiding scams and aid for serving in the military or being a spouse or child of a veteran. There are links to calculators for repayment comparisons of subsidized and non-subsidized loans, and Income-Contingent Repayment Plan (ICR) Income-Based Repayment Plan (IBR) loans.
INVESTING FROM A BIBLICAL PERSPECTIVE
Determining just how student aid is calculated can be a big help when it comes to selecting a school. Look for The EFC Formula 2012-2013 information.

Dependent students who have already started the online process for financial aid (and who must include the parents’ income in the calculation) can update their information online should there be a change in the family’s financial situation. Students who were accepted at schools that didn’t provide the “shopping sheet” information should ask for it. The Department of Education awards $150 billion per year in grants, loans and work-study opportunities.
